This question was asked by a user in the comments section. so here is the answer to what we have found. If you are looking for a Free-To-Air satellite set-top box with Sat>IP support, the first thing to understand is that Sat>IP support is still not common in low-cost FTA receivers.

From our checks, FTA set-top boxes based on Montage 8051 and Montage 8001 chipsets are the most relevant platforms for Sat>IP/network-streaming features. However, codec support is different from model to model.

Some models support only MPEG-2/MPEG-4/H.264, while newer Montage 8051-based models also support H.265/HEVC.

At the moment, we have not found a clearly verified FTA satellite receiver with both Sat>IP and AV1 hardware decoding. We will update this post when such a model becomes available or can be confirmed.

The SOLID HDS2X-7272 series is one of the more useful options if you want Sat>IP together with HEVC support.

The HDS2X-7272DLX uses the Montage 8051 chipset and supports DVB-S, DVB-S2 and DVB-S2X reception along with H.265 decoding. SOLID also lists HEVC channels among the supported broadcast types.

5. SOLID HDS2-2100Pro

The SOLID HDS2-2100Pro is an older model, but it is important because its product page explicitly lists SATIP. SOLID lists network applications including YouTube, Daily Motion, Vimeo, SATiP and DLNA. However, its video decoding specification is MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and H.264, not HEVC.

So this model is useful if Sat>IP is the main requirement, but it is not the right choice if you specifically need H.265 channels.

6. SOLID HDS2-2100DLX

The HDS2-2100DLX is another older network-capable FTA receiver. It supports Sat>IP/DLNA-type network functionality, but it does not provide HEVC decoding. Therefore, it remains suitable for MPEG-2/MPEG-4/H.264 satellite channels, but not newer H.265 broadcasts.

7. Catvision CSR-402HP

The Catvision CSR-402HP is another Indian FTA receiver with network-streaming capability. Catvision officially documents Wi-Fi casting through DLNA and the Tubio app. The receiver is DVB-S2, MPEG-4 and Full HD, but HEVC is not listed in its official specifications.

So it can be useful for users who want network streaming and mobile-to-TV playback, but not for H.265 satellite channels.

What is Sat>IP?

Sat>IP allows a satellite receiver or tuner to make live satellite TV available over a local IP network.

A typical setup can look like this:

Dish Antenna → Sat>IP-capable receiver → Wi-Fi/LAN → Phone, TV box, PC or compatible player

This means you may be able to watch FTA satellite channels on another device without connecting a separate coaxial cable to that device. The exact features depend on the firmware. Some boxes act mainly as a server, while others provide client or local streaming functions.

Montage 8051 vs Montage 8001

From our checks, Montage 8051 and Montage 8001-based FTA boxes are the important platforms to look for when searching for Sat>IP support. However, the chipset name alone should not be treated as a guarantee for every retail box. Manufacturers can enable or disable network features through firmware.

Montage 8051-based models are particularly interesting because several Indian models also add H.265/HEVC decoding.

That is why models such as:

are more useful today than older Sat>IP-only boxes.

Do Any Sat>IP FTA Boxes Support AV1?

At present, we have not found a verified Indian FTA satellite receiver that combines Sat>IP with AV1 decoding. AV1 is becoming common in Android TV and streaming devices, but low-cost DVB-S2/S2X FTA satellite receivers still mainly use MPEG-2, MPEG-4/H.264 and H.265/HEVC.

Which One Is Better for Sat>IP + HEVC?

If you need both Sat>IP and H.265/HEVC, the most relevant options currently are the Montage 8051-based SOLID models:

SOLID HDS2X-7272DLX, HDS2X-7299, HDS2X-8181 and HDS2X-8181PRO. The older HDS2-2100Pro and HDS2-2100DLX remain useful Sat>IP receivers, but they do not offer HEVC decoding.

The Catvision CSR-402HP is also useful for network streaming and DLNA, but it is an MPEG-4 receiver rather than an HEVC receiver.

These SAT> IP-compatible boxes can also be used for live TV streaming with compatible apps such as FTA Player and FreeDTH on the same local network.

102nd e-Auction for DD Free Dish MPEG-4 Slots Announced

There is good news for DD Free Dish viewers; Prasar Bharati has issued a notice inviting applications for the 102nd e-Auction—a mid-year event—to fill vacant MPEG-4 slots on the platform. This notice was issued on September 16, 2026.

According to the official notification, successful TV channels will be allotted DD Free Dish MPEG-4 slots on a pro-rata basis for the period from October 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027. The online e-Auction is expected to commence on September 24, 2026.

The auction comprises five categories (buckets), as Prasar Bharati has classified participating channels based on their genre and language.

The G1 category is for News and Current Affairs TV channels.
The G2 category is for channels of all genres other than News and Current Affairs.

Regional language channels are divided into three additional categories:

R1 includes Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam channels.
R2 includes Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, and Odia channels.
R3 includes other regional languages listed in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution (excluding Hindi and Urdu) that do not fall under R1 and R2.

For channels applying under categories R1, R2, and R3, it is mandatory to provide proof of their presence on MSO or DTH platforms, as well as evidence of their genre and language.

These private channels on DD Free Dish are required to broadcast content primarily in the same genre and language declared during the e-Auction process. As per the rules, 75% of the content (excluding approved advertisements and promos) must align with the declared genre and language, and this declared content must constitute at least 60% of the channel's total monthly content. This was because it was observed that most channels would air teleshopping advertisements throughout the day.

No, you cannot change an old MPEG-2 set-top box into an MPEG-4 box just by updating the software or changing a setting.

But don't worry! We do have a clever trick for you in this post.

Why doesn't a software update work?

Inside your old MPEG-2 box, there is a physical chip. This chip was only built to understand old MPEG-2 signals. It simply does not have the power or the right parts to read the newer MPEG-4 (HD) signals.

Because this is a physical hardware problem, no magic software, USB file, or hidden menu can teach that old chip how to play MPEG-4 channels.

The Real Solution -

You might have seen YouTube videos where people claim to "convert" an old box very cheaply. But here is the secret—they are not actually converting it. They are just changing the inside parts.

Here is what they actually do:

They open up the old MPEG-2 plastic box.

They completely remove the old green board (the motherboard) from inside.

They buy a new, standalone MPEG-4 motherboard from the market or online.

They put this new board inside the old plastic box and power it with a 12V adapter.

This is a fun and cheap DIY project, but remember: you aren't really updating the old box. You are just putting a brand-new machine inside an old plastic shell.

What is the best option for you?

If you want to watch MPEG-4 HD channels on DD Free Dish without any headaches, the best choice is to simply buy a brand-new MPEG-4 set-top box.

However, if you are on a very tight budget, you can easily buy one of those loose MPEG-4 motherboards. Look for one that has an LED display and remote sensor built right into it. Just plug it into a 12V power adapter, connect it to your TV, and it is ready to play your HD Free Dish channels!

Why Does the FreeDTH App Show Only 70–80 Channels?

“Why am I getting only the first 70–80 channels in the FreeDTH app on my Smart TV?”

If you are also facing the same issue while using the FreeDTH app with your DD Free Dish set-top box, here is the simple answer.

When you enable the SAT>IP feature on your compatible Free-to-Air set-top box, the set-top box starts sharing TV channels over your local Wi-Fi or LAN network.

The FreeDTH app receives those locally shared channels and shows them on your Smart TV, Android TV, or mobile device.

FreeDTH does not provide these channels through unauthorised internet streaming. The app only shows the TV channels shared by your own compatible set-top box on your local network.

Because the stream is coming from your own set-top box over the local network, normal internet data is not required for watching these channels. You also do not need any login or account for this feature.

Now the main question is -

why are only 70 or 80 channels showing?

This is not a fixed limitation of the FreeDTH app. The number of channels mainly depends on your set-top box hardware, RAM, firmware, and the way SAT>IP is implemented by the manufacturer.

Some low-cost FTA set-top boxes may share only a limited number of channels. On some other compatible boxes, users may get more than 100 or even 150 channels through SAT>IP.

So if another user is getting more channels than you, it does not always mean there is a problem with your FreeDTH app. If your set-top box is sharing only the first 70 or 80 channels, you can try one simple method.

Open the channel list on your DD Free Dish set-top box and move your favourite channels to the beginning of the channel list.

For example, if your box is sharing only the first 80 saved channels, move the channels you watch most often into those first positions.

After that, refresh or restart SAT>IP and check the FreeDTH app again.

This may help you watch your favourite DD Free Dish channels on your Smart TV or mobile without using another set-top box. But please remember that this method does not work on every set-top box.

Some set-top boxes share channels according to the saved channel list, while some boxes may share channels according to the transponder or frequency available through the tuner.

So moving channels may work on one receiver but may not make any difference on another. It all depends on the set-top box hardware and firmware.

Is FreeDTH an IPTV app?

No. FreeDTH does not work like an unauthorized IPTV service. It works as a local network client and receives TV channels shared by your own compatible SAT>IP-enabled set-top box.

Your set-top box and the device running the FreeDTH app normally need to be connected to the same local network.

Prasar Bharati Announces 101st e-Auction for MPEG-4 Slots

Prasar Bharati has released a new notice inviting applications for the Mid-Year 101st e-Auction of MPEG-4 slots on the DD Free Dish platform. This auction is for allotment of vacant MPEG-4 slots on a pro-rata basis for the period from 1 August 2026 to 31 March 2027.

According to the notice dated 15 July 2026, the 101st online e-Auction process is tentatively scheduled to start from 23 July 2026, Thursday. The auction will be conducted as per the DD Free Dish e-Auction Methodology 2025 and its subsequent amendments.

Which channels can participate?

Only satellite TV channels permitted and licensed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting are allowed to participate in this e-Auction. International Public Broadcasters permitted and licensed by the Ministry of I&B may also participate.

Auction buckets and genres

For this e-Auction, TV channels have been categorised into different buckets based on genre and language:

So this e-Auction may bring new private TV channels to the DD Free Dish MPEG-4 platform. After the auction process is completed and successful channels are allotted slots, viewers may see new channels added to DD Free Dish depending on the final allotment and technical placement.

Successful channels will be placed on vacant slots / Logical Channel Numbers as per Prasar Bharati’s procedure. The final decision regarding channel placement will remain with Prasar Bharati.

Many DD Free Dish users are facing a common picture-size problem on their set-top boxes. HD channels look good, but SD channels look zoomed, stretched, or cropped. In some cases, SD channels look correct, but HD channels start showing cropped.

This problem mostly happens because of the resolution setting, aspect ratio setting, or TV screen display mode available in the DD Free Dish set-top box.

What Is the Problem?

Nowadays, DD Free Dish has different types of channels, including HD channels, MPEG-2 SD channels, and MPEG-4 SD channels. HD channels are usually made for modern widescreen TVs, while many SD channels may use a different screen format.

Because of this, users face this type of issue:

When the set-top box is set to Full HD, 1080p, or 16:9, HD channels show properly, but some MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 SD channels may look zoomed or cropped.

But when the box is set to 4:3 Letterbox or 4:3 Pan & Scan, SD channels may look better, while HD channels may not fit correctly on the TV screen.

So one setting works for HD channels, and another setting works for SD channels. This is why many users get confused.

Why Does This Happen?

This happens because HD and SD channels do not always use the same picture format.

HD channels are mostly shown in 16:9 widescreen format, which is suitable for LED, LCD, and Smart TVs. But some SD channels may appear in 4:3 or another SD picture format.

If your set-top box forces every channel into one fixed display mode, then some channels may show zoomed, stretched, or cropped.

This is usually not a DD Free Dish signal problem. In most cases, it is related to the set-top box display setting.

Common Display Options in DD Free Dish Set-Top Boxes

Different DD Free Dish set-top boxes may show different menu names, but these are common options:

Auto

This is the best option if available. In Auto mode, the set-top box automatically adjusts the picture according to the channel format. This can solve the zoom or crop problem for both HD and SD channels.

16:9

This option is useful for modern widescreen TVs. HD channels usually look good in 16:9 mode, but some SD channels may look stretched or cropped.

4:3 Letterbox

This option shows the full picture but may show black bars at the top and bottom. It is mainly useful for old 4:3 TVs or for avoiding picture cropping.

4:3 Pan & Scan

This option fills the screen, but it may cut some part of the picture from the left and right side. So some channels may look cropped.

Full Screen / Zoom

Some set-top boxes may have Full Screen or Zoom type options. These options may fill the screen, but they can also crop the picture. If your channels are showing zoomed, avoid this setting.

Best Solution: Select Auto Option

We have found that the best solution is to select Auto in the resolution, aspect ratio, or display setting.

Follow these steps:

Take your DD Free Dish set-top box remote.
Press the Menu button.
Go to System Setting or System Setup.
Open the TV Setting, Display Setting, Resolution, or Aspect Ratio option.
Check whether the Auto option is available.
Select Auto and save the setting.

After selecting Auto, your set-top box should automatically adjust the picture size according to HD and SD channels.

Tested on Different Set-Top Boxes

We checked this problem on different DD Free Dish MPEG-4 HD set-top boxes.

In some boxes, like Solid 6165, Solid 6312, and the Sunstar HD box, we did not find the Auto option in the resolution setting. Because of this, the zoom/crop problem could not be fully fixed from the normal menu settings.

But in some other models like Solid 7299, Solid 7290, and Crown HD box, the Auto option was available in the resolution setting. After selecting Auto, the HD and SD channel zoom problem was solved.

So this issue also depends on your set-top box model and software version.

What if the auto option is not available?

If your DD Free Dish set-top box does not have the Auto option, then the problem may not be fully solved from the normal settings menu.

In this case, you can try these temporary settings:

For modern LED/LCD/Smart TV, use 16:9.

For old 4:3 TV, use 4:3 Letterbox.

Avoid Full Screen or Zoom if channels are showing cropped.

But if the problem continues, you should contact your set-top box seller or manufacturer and ask for a software upgrade or firmware update. A software update may add the Auto option or improve picture adjustment for HD and SD channels.

Resolution and Aspect Ratio Are Different

Many users confuse resolution and aspect ratio.

Resolution means output quality, such as 576p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.

Aspect ratio means screen shape, such as 4:3, 16:9, Letterbox, or Pan & Scan.

For HD TVs, you can keep the resolution at 1080p or 1080i if supported. But for the zoom or crop problem, you should mainly check the Aspect Ratio, TV Screen, Display Mode, or Auto setting.

Before Buying a New DD Free Dish Set-Top Box

If you are buying a new DD Free Dish MPEG-4 HD set-top box, check whether it has the Auto option in resolution or display settings.

Also check for these options:

In this also, you can guess by the above trick and install the dish antenna.

If you have the antenna of d2h -

The Free Dish antenna is at 93.5 degrees towards East, while the d2h antenna is at 83 degrees towards East. So you can install it in the same way as d2h but you should slowly rotate your dish antenna towards left to bring it from 83 degrees East to 93.5 degrees East and keep checking the signal.

If you have Sun Direct antenna then -

The Free Dish antenna is placed at 93.5 degrees east, while Sun Direct antenna is at 91 degrees east. So just place it like Sun Direct antenna and you will get DD Free Dish signals without much effort.
