When I started mashing up music, I’d never have imagined I’d one day be making music for the Olympics or performing there. Yet early in 2012, I was asked to make a series of short mixes to be played at the various Olympic venues during the London Summer Games. I also had a chance to perform live at several events there as well.

For the third year running, I had the opportunity to mash up of all of the artists that performed at Capital FM’s Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium in London. The video was played at the beginning and toward the end of the concert. For 2011’s mashup, check out “Party on the Floor”, and for 2010’s version, see “Like OMG, Baby”

United State of Pop 2010 (Don’t Stop the Pop)

Yet another installment in what has become an annual New Year’s tradition. It’s the United State of Pop, which mashes up the Top 25 songs of the year, according to Billboard magazine.

In 2010, pop has gone into serious all-out party mode. In 2009 the music was encouraging us to pick ourselves back up after being knocked down again, and to rock out to some great dance music while you’re at it. This year’s music tells us to keep going now that we’re up and having fun. In fact, the fun seems to be in such overdrive that it borders on recklessness. Usher urges us to ‘dance like it’s the last night of your life”, and Katy Perry wants us to “run away and don’t ever look back”. Even the songs that aren’t about parties have parties in their videos, like this year’s entries from Mike Posner and Lady Antebellum.

It’s a great thing about music that you can leave your worries and lose yourself in the moment. In our current world of dance pop culture fantasy, this takes place at a club, where you can drink, meet the most amazing person you’ve ever met, and where as Ke$ha says, “the party don’t stop”.

Personally, as a DJ performing mostly at raging party-ish events, I can relate. My career path has been crazy lately, and I’m definitely not ready for the party to stop!

So with that in mind I urge you all please……

As far as the instrumentals go, it’s mostly backed up by Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” throughout. Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” forms the beat from 0:13 to 1:42 and then the breakdown at 2:50-3:05 (all timing info here is for the mp3, not the video). A very slowed down instrumental riff from Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” comes in from 0:30-:045 and again from 1:29-1:44. The piano from the Fray’s “You Found Me” accompanies the Beyonce/Miley duet from 0:45-1:00, reappearing at the break from 1:44-1:52 and again at 4:23. The intro of Flo Rida’s “Right Round” makes an appearance from 3:05-3:09. The guitar intro from Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You” makes an appearance from 2:21-2:36. A nice synth riff from Soulja Boy’s “Kiss Me Through the Phone” appears at 0:42,1:41,and 2:47.

Sean Kingston – Beautiful Mashup

In a brief but impressive career, Sean Kingston has always had a knack for creating amazing hooks. At 17, he released the Ben-E.-King-inspired “Beautiful Girls”, somehow managing to sing about suicidal thoughts without losing his trademark smile. This was followed up with “Me Love”, a twist on Led Zeppelin’s “D’yer Maker”, and “Take You There”, which pointed towards a more electronic futuristic sound. By the time he released this summer’s inescapable euro-flavored infectious dance hit “Fire Burning”, the sound had gone fully electronic, while remaining as catchy as ever.

So when his label approached me about mashing up his greatest hits, I knew I had all the raw material I would need to make an ultra hook-y mashup. And finding the actual words “mash up” in “Beautiful Girls” was just icing on the cake.

I mixed up these four hits, along with “I Can Feel It” from his last album “Sean Kingston”, and bits of “Tomorrow” and “Face Drop” from his upcoming album “Tomorrow”.

And I made a video for it as well!

Annie Lennox: Backwards/Forwards

I’ve always held a deep respect for Annie Lennox and her music, so when she gave me her multi-track masters to mash up, I was thrilled. The task was to tie together all of her solo career into single song and video, and I could deconstruct it as much as I wanted! Woohoo!

Her music expresses much hardship and sadness, but also defiance, joy and triumph, and I wanted the mashup to reflect that journey. Here’s the tracklist:
