In today's consumer landscape, attributes like transparency, integrity, and honesty in a brand are no longer optional; they are prerequisites. As mindful consumers, we are growing more aware of the impact of what we consume and use, from our diets and clothing to skincare and home care products.

However, a recent incident involving The Laundress, a high-end fabric care brand, has starkly illuminated the significant chinks in this seemingly robust armor of trust. Despite its well-known stance on eco-friendly, non-toxic formulas, the company was caught in a whirlwind of recalls, most disturbingly for its baby detergent. The reason? The presence of ethylene oxide, a substance identified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The consequences of exposure to ethylene oxide range from mild respiratory irritation and nausea to severe conditions such as neurotoxicity and peripheral paralysis.

The recall is a bitter pill to swallow, especially considering the potential risks to our most vulnerable - infants. It serves as a stark reminder that no brand, regardless of its stature or reputation, is immune to such oversights. It underscores the need for us, the consumers, to move beyond brand trust and adopt a proactive stance in understanding what we bring into our homes.

More troubling is the fact that companies, especially those with substantial resources, have the means to conduct in-depth ingredient research. Yet, some may choose to overlook this vital step or worse, intentionally disregard the potential hazards linked to certain components.

On a brighter note, smaller businesses often demonstrate greater awareness and concern over these issues. They comprehend that their role transcends product creation – they're shaping healthier, safer spaces for their customers. Their hands-on involvement in production ensures rigorous quality control, and their agility often enables them to respond swiftly and effectively to potential issues.

However, our role as consumers surpasses merely choosing brands that show conscientiousness. We need to dig deeper, striving to comprehend the ingredients in the products we use daily. Brands may provide ingredient lists, but decoding these components and discerning their implications for our health and environment rests with us.The Laundress incident serves as a textbook case for the necessity of personal research. Ethylene oxide may not be a household term, but a quick Google search sheds light on its potential perils. Armed with this knowledge, we can make informed choices about the products we permit in our homes.

Understanding product ingredients transcends protecting our health; it equips us as consumers. It allows us to navigate the product landscape with confidence, appreciating the advantages and disadvantages of various ingredients, like black seed oil or coconut extract. This knowledge empowers us to make choices based on information, not marketing claims. The incident with The Laundress is a wake-up call for all consumers. Regardless of a brand's reputation, the onus of ensuring product safety ultimately rests on our shoulders. So, let's embrace the power of knowledge, the significance of independent research, and acknowledge our essential role in safeguarding our health and safety in the ever-evolving consumer market.

Because understanding what goes into our products isn't just a luxury—it's an absolute responsibility.

Choosing skincare products is more than a casual purchase - it's a commitment to your skin's health and well-being. In a market flooded with choices, discerning which products align best with your skin's needs can often feel like a puzzle. Amidst this landscape, our goal is clear and simple: to offer skincare solutions that are thoughtfully crafted, focusing on natural and organic ingredients.

Why organic and natural?

As we learn more about the world around us, it's becoming increasingly evident that nature is a treasure trove of potent ingredients that have been used for skincare for centuries. Harnessing these ingredients in their organic form is about more than just jumping on a trend - it's a recognition of their inherent value and an effort to minimize unnecessary additives.

Our body and baby lotions have been created to reflect this philosophy. These products aren't merely products but the result of our quest to offer skincare that respects and understands your skin. The formulation of these lotions involves a thoughtful selection and combination of ingredients, each bringing its unique properties to the mix.

Organic Aloe Vera Juice

We begin our exploration with organic aloe vera juice, a cornerstone ingredient in our lotion formulations. This juice is extracted from the aloe vera plant, known for its extensive use in traditional medicine across various cultures. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, aloe vera juice is valued for its potential to maintain skin hydration, offering a soothing, moisturizing experience.

Organic Cold-Pressed Hemp Seed Oil & Organic Avocado Oil

Next on our ingredient list are organic cold-pressed hemp seed oil and organic avocado oil. Cold-pressing ensures the beneficial properties of hemp seed oil are preserved, particularly its balanced ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids, crucial for maintaining skin health and elasticity. On the other hand, avocado oil is packed with monounsaturated fats, vitamins A, D, and E, and omega fatty acids, adding to the nourishing and moisturizing potential of our lotions.

Black Seed Oil (Nigella Sativa) & Black Currant Oil

Our lotions also incorporate black seed oil and black currant oil. Extracted from the seeds of the Nigella Sativa plant, black seed oil has been used across generations for its potential soothing and nourishing properties. Black currant oil, another time-tested ingredient, is known for its high content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which may help maintain skin's resilience and smoothness.

Shea Butter and Mango Butter

Shea butter and mango butter play an essential role in our lotions. These natural emollients are renowned for their skin-softening and moisturizing properties, helping to keep the skin well-hydrated and smooth.

Natural Preservatives

In our effort to stay as natural as possible, we have incorporated natural preservatives like Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate and Lactobacillus. These ingredients help protect the product from microbial growth, ensuring an extended shelf life without the need for synthetic preservatives.

Essential Oils

Our lotions are enriched with a unique essential oil blend. These essential oils not only contribute a calming, serene fragrance but also bring their unique properties to the mix.

Formulating for Baby Skin

We have taken special care in formulating a lotion that caters to the delicate skin of babies. Our baby lotion includes the same organic and carefully selected ingredients as our body lotion, except the essential oils are replaced with a gentler alternative: lavender hydrosol.

The process of formulating our body and baby lotions is about more than just mixing ingredients - it's about understanding the potential benefits of each ingredient and how they interact with each other to provide a skincare solution that is harmonious with nature and respects your skin. We hope that this detailed look into some of our key ingredients has helped you better understand their value and our meticulous formulation process. We are committed to providing skincare that harnesses the best of nature's offerings, creating an experience that is as beneficial as it is enjoyable.

Natural skincare, organic ingredients, body lotion, baby lotion, organic aloe vera juice, cold-pressed hemp seed oil, organic avocado oil, black seed oil, black currant oil, Shea butter, mango butter, natural preservatives, essential oils, lavender hydrosol, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Lactobacillus, organic skincare products, skincare philosophy

After being approached recently about offering natural products to cancer patients, I felt compelled to delve deeper into understanding the effects of chemotherapy and other cancer treatments on skin and hair. I realized that cancer treatments can significantly impact a person's skin and hair, emphasizing the importance of turning to natural and gentle care products for relief. In this heartfelt blog post, we will discuss the benefits of using natural body and hair care products for cancer patients, the risks associated with conventional products, and the dangers of chemical hair straighteners, particularly for black women.

The Effects of Cancer Treatments on Skin and Hair:

Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other cancer treatments can cause a range of side effects, including dryness, sensitivity, and irritation in the skin. Additionally, these treatments can lead to rashes, acne, and hyperpigmentation. Hair loss is another common side effect, and regrowth might differ from the person's original hair type, sometimes becoming more fragile or changing in texture. Furthermore, cancer treatments can make nails brittle, discolored, and prone to breakage.

Embracing Natural Hair and Body Products for Cancer Patients:

During and after cancer treatments, it is vital to use natural, gentle products that don't exacerbate the side effects. Natural products are free from harsh chemicals and toxins, offering a safer and more soothing experience for the skin and hair. They contain organic ingredients, essential oils, and botanicals that help maintain the skin's health without causing irritation.

Conventional bath and body products often contain toxic chemicals that can be harmful to cancer patients, whose skin is already more sensitive and prone to irritation.

It's crucial to be aware of the potentially harmful chemicals found in conventional body products, as some have been studied to show a cancer risk. A few of these chemicals include parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, sodium benzoate, petroleum-derived mineral oils, phenoxyethanol, and petrolatum.

Parabens, often used as preservatives in cosmetics, have been linked to hormonal disruptions, while phthalates, commonly found in synthetic fragrances, have been associated with endocrine system issues.

Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, used to prolong the shelf life of products, can release small amounts of formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, over time.

Sodium benzoate, another commonly used preservative, may also have negative health effects when combined with certain other ingredients.

Phenoxyethanol, a frequently used alternative to parabens, has been linked to skin and eye irritation in some people.

Petrolatum, another ingredient often found in conventional cosmetics and personal care products, can pose potential risks if it is not fully refined. According to safecosmetics.org, petrolatum that is not fully refined may be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are classified as probable human carcinogens. The refining process should remove these impurities; however, in the United States, there is no assurance that petrolatum used in personal care products is properly refined.

A Word of Caution on Chemical Hair Straighteners and Their Impact on Black Women. Chemical hair straighteners from different brands have recently been put into the public spotlight after findings showed that recent use could cause uterine cancer and other issues. Many women use it without knowing the risks and how toxic they can be, and a study finds black women may be more affected due to higher use. For more information, please visit: https://www.drugwatch.com/legal/hair-straightener-lawsuits/

Natural skin care and hair care products can offer the desired results without the harmful side effects of chemical straighteners, helping maintain the health and integrity of the hair and scalp. Cancer patients, survivors, and individuals seeking to reduce their exposure to harmful chemicals should prioritize using natural hair and body care products. These gentle, organic products cater to the unique needs of those affected by cancer treatments and provide a safer alternative to conventional products and chemical hair straighteners.

By choosing natural products, you are not only protecting your skin and hair but also taking a step towards a healthier and more holistic lifestyle. We care about your well-being and encourage you to make choices that nurture your body.

Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is a popular ingredient in hair gel products due to its ability to thicken and add volume without leaving a sticky residue. If you're looking for a hair gel that works for your hairstyle and hair type, then you'll want to read this ultimate guide to hydroxyethylcellulose hair gel.

What is Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC)?

Hydroxyethylcellulose is a plant-derived thickener that is commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products, including hair gels. It is derived from cellulose, a natural polymer found in the cell walls of plants. During the manufacturing process, the cellulose is treated with an alkali, followed by etherification with ethylene oxide, which results in the formation of hydroxyethyl groups. The resulting hydroxyethylcellulose is a water-soluble, non-ionic polymer that can thicken, stabilize, and emulsify formulations.

Choosing the Best Hydroxyethylcellulose Hair Gel for Your HairstyleWhen choosing a hair gel with hydroxyethylcellulose, there are a few factors to consider to find the right product for your hair type and desired style.

Hair Type The first factor to consider is your hair type. If you have fine or thin hair, you may want to choose a lightweight hair gel with hydroxyethylcellulose that won't weigh your hair down. If you have thick or curly hair, you may need a stronger hold to keep your hair in place.

Hold Strength

The next factor to consider is the hold strength of the hair gel. If you're looking for a firm hold to keep your hair in place all day, then you may want a hair gel with a high concentration of hydroxyethylcellulose. If you want a more flexible hold, then look for a hair gel with a lower concentration.Ingredients It's important to read the ingredients label to avoid hair gels that contain harsh chemicals or ingredients that can dry out your hair. Look for hair gels with natural and nourishing ingredients that can add moisture and shine to your hair.

Application

Consider the application process of the hair gel. Some hair gels with hydroxyethylcellulose come in a spray bottle or a pump bottle, while others come in a traditional tub or tube. Consider which application method works best for your hair type and styling needs.

How to Use Hydroxyethylcellulose Hair Gel

Using hydroxyethylcellulose hair gel is easy. Follow these simple steps for best results:

Start with clean, towel-dried hair.

Take a small amount of hair gel and rub it between your palms to warm it up.

Apply the hair gel to your hair, starting at the roots and working your way down to the ends.

Style your hair as desired, using a comb or your fingers.

Let your hair dry naturally or use a hair dryer to speed up the process.

Hydroxyethylcellulose is an effective ingredient in hair gels that can provide hold and volume without leaving a sticky residue. When choosing a hydroxyethylcellulose hair gel, consider your hair type, the hold strength, ingredients, and application method. With these tips, you can find the best hair gel for your hair type and desired style.

If you're looking to achieve smooth, glowing, and even-toned skin, incorporating Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA's) into your skincare routine can be a game-changer. AHA's work by exfoliating the top layer of the skin, promoting cell turnover, and revealing brighter, smoother, more even-toned skin.

In this blog post, we will share the ultimate AHA skincare routine, consisting of nine steps, and the benefits of each AHA. Each type of AHA has unique benefits for the skin, including:

Glycolic Acid:

Derived from sugar cane, glycolic acid has the smallest molecular size of all the AHA's, allowing it to penetrate deeply into the skin.

Exfoliates the skin, promoting cell turnover and revealing brighter, smoother, more even-toned skin.

Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, making it a popular ingredient in anti-aging products.

Can also improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and other types of discoloration.

Lactic Acid:

Derived from milk, lactic acid is a gentle AHA that is ideal for those with sensitive skin.

Moisturizes and softens the skin, making it an effective ingredient in hydrating products.

Exfoliates the skin, promoting cell turnover and revealing brighter, smoother, more even-toned skin.

Can also improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and other types of discoloration.

Mandelic Acid:

Derived from bitter almonds, mandelic acid is a gentle AHA that is ideal for those with sensitive skin.

Has anti-bacterial properties that make it effective in treating acne-prone skin.

Exfoliates the skin, promoting cell turnover and revealing brighter, smoother, more even-toned skin.

Can also improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and other types of discoloration.

Step 1: Cleanser

Start your AHA skincare routine by cleansing your skin with a gentle cleanser. Look for a cleanser that contains glycolic or lactic acid to help exfoliate and prep your skin for the rest of your routine. Glycolic acid is the most effective AHA for exfoliation and can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while lactic acid is a gentler AHA that can help brighten and hydrate the skin.

Step 2: Toner

Next, apply an AHA toner to further exfoliate and remove any remaining impurities. Look for a toner that contains glycolic or mandelic acid for optimal results. Mandelic acid is a gentle AHA that can help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and acne scars.

Step 3: Serum

Apply an AHA serum to help brighten and even out your skin tone. Look for a serum that contains glycolic or lactic acid and vitamin C for maximum effectiveness. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help protect the skin from environmental stressors and further brighten the skin.

Step 4: Eye Cream

Gently pat an AHA eye cream under your eyes to help reduce the appearance of dark circles and fine lines. Look for an eye cream that contains glycolic or lactic acid and caffeine to help brighten and de-puff your under-eye area.

Step 5: Moisturizer

Apply an AHA moisturizer to hydrate and nourish your skin while promoting cell turnover. Look for a moisturizer that contains glycolic or lactic acid and hyaluronic acid to help lock in moisture. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that can help retain moisture in the skin and improve the skin's elasticity.

Step 6: Weekly AHA Peel

Incorporate a weekly AHA peel into your routine to further exfoliate and promote cell turnover. Look for a peel that contains glycolic or lactic acid and follow the instructions carefully. A weekly AHA peel can help improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and other types of discoloration.

Step 7: AHA Body Lotion

In addition to your face, you can also use AHA's on your body. Apply an AHA body lotion to help exfoliate and hydrate your skin. Glycolic acid is an effective AHA for body care and can help improve the appearance of rough, dry skin.

Step 8: AHA Lip Treatment

Last but not least, apply an AHA lip treatment to help smooth and soften your lips. Look for a treatment that contains glycolic or lactic acid and apply it before bed. AHA lip treatments can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the lips and improve their overall texture.Incorporating AHA's into your skincare routine can help you achieve smooth, glowing, and even-toned skin. By following this eight-step AHA skincare routine, you can optimize the benefits of AHA's and achieve the perfect skin you've always wanted.

Fragrances are ubiquitous in personal care products, from body washes to lotions to deodorants. However, for some individuals, these fragrances can cause skin irritation, rashes, or allergic reactions. This is where fragrance-free body wash comes in. In this article, we will explore the benefits of using fragrance-free body wash, discuss the differences between fragrance-free and unscented products, provide some general body care tips, and recommend some of the best fragrance-free body washes and other body care products for individuals with sensitive skin.

What is fragrance-free body wash?

Fragrance-free body wash is exactly what it sounds like – a product that is free of any synthetic or natural fragrances. It can be confusing to differentiate between unscented and fragrance-free products. Unscented products may still contain ingredients that neutralize the odor of other ingredients. Fragrance-free, on the other hand, means that the product does not contain any fragrance ingredients whatsoever. This is particularly important for individuals with sensitive skin or those with fragrance allergies.

Benefits of using fragrance-free body wash There are numerous benefits to using fragrance-free body wash. The primary benefit is that it reduces irritation and inflammation for those with sensitive skin. This is because fragrance ingredients can irritate and dry out the skin, leading to rashes or other skin conditions. Additionally, fragrance-free products are less likely to cause allergic reactions. Using fragrance-free body wash also eliminates the risk of exposure to synthetic fragrance chemicals, which can have harmful health effects. Some common synthetic fragrance chemicals include phthalates, parabens, and synthetic musks, which have been linked to hormone disruption, asthma, headaches, and other health issues.

Best fragrance-free body washes If you're in the market for a fragrance-free body wash, we recommend looking for products that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin.

When looking for a fragrance-free body wash, it's important to check the label for any other potentially irritating ingredients such as sulfates or parabens. It's also worth noting that fragrance-free products may not necessarily be "all-natural" or organic. However, many fragrance-free products are still effective and safe for individuals with sensitive skin.

Other fragrance-free body care products In addition to fragrance-free body wash, there are other body care products that can be beneficial for individuals with sensitive skin. These include unscented body powder, scent-free lotion, non-fragrance body oil, and fragrance-free body lotion. These products are designed to provide moisture and nourishment without any added irritants. For example, if you have dry or itchy skin, a fragrance-free body lotion can help soothe and hydrate your skin without causing any additional irritation.General body care tips Aside from using fragrance-free products, there are some general body care tips that can help keep your skin healthy and irritation-free. For example, it's important to not over-wash your skin as this can strip it of natural oils. Dermatologists recommend limiting showers to no more than once a day and using lukewarm water instead of hot water. It's also recommended to use a gentle, fragrance-free soap or body wash, such as the ones listed above. After showering, it's important to pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it, as this can cause further irritation. Finally, it's a good idea to avoid wearing tight clothing that can trap moisture and cause skin irritation.

Why use fragrance-free body care products?

Fragrance ingredients are not always disclosed on products. Fragrance-free body care products offer many benefits to those with sensitive skin, allergies, or those who simply prefer to avoid synthetic fragrances. One of the main reasons to use fragrance-free body care products is to reduce the risk of skin irritation, inflammation, and allergic reactions. Fragrance ingredients can dry out and irritate the skin, which can lead to rashes, itching, and other skin conditions. By using fragrance-free body care products, individuals with sensitive skin can avoid these negative effects and keep their skin healthy and moisturized. In addition to reducing skin irritation, using fragrance-free body care products can also help protect overall health. Synthetic fragrance chemicals used in many personal care products have been linked to a range of health issues, including hormone disruption, asthma, and headaches. By using fragrance-free products, individuals can reduce their exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals and avoid these negative health effects.

Another benefit of fragrance-free body care products is that they are often formulated with gentle, non-irritating ingredients that can help soothe and nourish the skin. Many fragrance-free products are designed specifically for individuals with sensitive skin, meaning that they are free from other potentially irritating ingredients such as sulfates, parabens, or other synthetic preservatives. These products are often dermatologist-recommended and clinically tested, making them a safe and effective choice for anyone with sensitive skin.

Using fragrance-free body care products can also help prevent skin damage and aging. Synthetic fragrance chemicals can damage the skin's natural barrier, which can lead to increased water loss, dryness, and fine lines. By using fragrance-free products that are gentle on the skin, individuals can help protect their skin from these negative effects and maintain a youthful, healthy appearance.

Overall, there are many compelling reasons to use fragrance-free body care products, from reducing skin irritation and protecting overall health to promoting skin health and preventing aging. Whether you have sensitive skin, allergies, or simply prefer to avoid synthetic fragrances, there are many high-quality fragrance-free body care products available that can help you achieve healthy, beautiful skin.

Coco Betaine and Cocamidopropyl Betaine are two common surfactants found in personal care and cosmetic products. While they may seem similar, they have distinct differences that make them unique. Coco Betaine is a mild and gentle surfactant derived from coconut oil that is known for its neutral pH and compatibility with other ingredients. On the other hand, Cocamidopropyl Betaine is derived from both coconut oil and dimethylaminopropylamine and has a slightly alkaline pH, which can potentially disrupt the skin's natural pH balance. As a result, Coco Betaine is the preferred choice for individuals with sensitive skin or those looking for a gentler alternative to Cocamidopropyl Betaine.

More

When shopping for personal care and cosmetic products, you may have come across the terms Coco Betaine and Cocamidopropyl Betaine listed on the ingredient labels. Both of these ingredients are used as surfactants in shampoos, body washes, and other personal care products to provide foaming and cleaning properties. However, despite their similarities, there are some key differences between these two ingredients that make them unique.

Coco Betaine is a type of betaine that is derived from coconut oil and used as a mild and gentle surfactant in personal care and cosmetic products. It is considered to be gentler and less irritating to the skin and scalp compared to Cocamidopropyl Betaine, which can sometimes cause skin irritation for individuals with sensitive skin.

Coco Betaine also has a neutral pH, making it a good choice for personal care products that should not affect the skin's natural pH balance. Furthermore, Coco Betaine is more compatible with other ingredients, including natural and organic ingredients, making it a good choice for products that contain a mix of natural and synthetic ingredients.

On the other hand, Cocamidopropyl Betaine is a type of betaine that is derived from both coconut oil and dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA). Unlike Coco Betaine, which has a neutral pH, Cocamidopropyl Betaine has a slightly alkaline pH, which can potentially disrupt the skin's natural pH balance. Additionally, Cocamidopropyl Betaine can sometimes interact with other ingredients, making it less suitable for use in some natural or organic personal care products.

It's important to note that the safety of DMAPA as a cosmetic ingredient has been questioned by some health and environmental groups, and there is some evidence to suggest that it may be a skin irritant and potentially harmful to aquatic life. However, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers DMAPA to be generally safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products when used in accordance with its approved use levels. As with any cosmetic ingredient, it's important to research the safety and potential health effects of DMAPA before using personal care products that contain it.

While Coco Betaine and Cocamidopropyl Betaine are related and similar, they are not the same thing, and using the terms interchangeably can lead to confusion and miscommunication about the ingredients in personal care and cosmetic products. Coco Betaine is considered to be gentler and less irritating to the skin, has a neutral pH, and is more compatible with other ingredients, making it a better choice for use in personal care and cosmetic products.

Here at EKK Candle Art, we use Coco Betaine in our baby bath and body products because of its mildness and compatibility with other ingredients, ensuring that our customers have access to high-quality and safe personal care products.

Why should you even bother when there are so many other options out there?

More

If you're a candle lover, you've probably noticed the rise in popularity of candles with wooden wicks. But are wooden wicks really better than traditional cotton wicks?

In this article, we'll answer that question and cover everything you need to know about wooden wicks.

What is a Wooden Wick?

A wooden wick is a wick made from wood rather than cotton. It is a thin, flat piece of wood that is placed in the center of a candle to provide a flame. Wooden wicks are usually made from natural, untreated wood, and come in various widths and lengths.

Benefits of a Wooden Wick

There are several benefits to using a wooden wick in your candles:

Better Scent Throw - The wide flame created by a wooden wick allows for a stronger scent throw. The heat of the flame melts the wax and releases the fragrance into the air.

Crackling Sound - A wooden wick creates a soothing and calming crackling sound when lit. This adds to the ambiance of the candle and creates a cozy atmosphere.

Longer Burning Time - Wooden wicks burn longer than traditional cotton wicks. This means your candle will last longer, giving you more time to enjoy the fragrance.

Eco-Friendly - Wooden wicks are a sustainable option as they come from a renewable resource.

How Long Do Wooden Wicks Last?

The lifespan of a wooden wick depends on various factors, such as the size of the wick and the type of wax used. Generally, wooden wicks can last for up to 6 hours before needing to be trimmed.

Are Wooden Wicks Healthier than Cotton?

Wooden wicks are a healthier option than cotton wicks as they don't contain any harmful chemicals. Traditional cotton wicks are often treated with chemicals, such as lead and zinc, which can release toxins when burned.

Why Do People Like Wooden Wicks?

People like wooden wicks because they offer a unique and cozy atmosphere when burned. The crackling sound and longer burn time are also appealing features.

Do Wood Wicks Burn Black?

Wood wicks may produce some black soot, especially if the wick is too long or the candle is placed in a drafty area. However, if the wick is trimmed to the appropriate length and the candle is burned in a still environment, the amount of soot produced should be minimal.

What's Better: Cotton Wicks or Wooden Wicks?

The choice between cotton wicks and wooden wicks ultimately comes down to personal preference and the desired burn quality. Here are some pros and cons of each type:

Cotton wicks:

Pros:

Easy to find and widely available

Produce a consistent flame

Affordable

Cons:

Can contain harmful chemicals and additives

May produce soot and smoke

May require trimming to prevent mushrooming

Wooden wicks:

Pros:

Made from natural materials

Provide a unique and aesthetic look

Produce a natural crackling sound

Generally require less maintenance than cotton wicks

Cons:

Can be more expensive than cotton wicks

How Do You Extinguish a Wood Wick Candle?

To extinguish a wood wick candle, you can blow out the flame or use a snuffer. It's important to avoid using water to put out the flame, as this can cause the wax to splatter and create a mess. You should also avoid touching the wax until it has completely cooled and solidified.

Wooden wick candles offer a unique and cozy experience for anyone who loves candles. They provide a warm ambiance, gentle crackling sound, and a long-lasting burn time. While they may require some extra care and attention, they are well worth the effort. By following the tips and guidelines in this article, you can enjoy the benefits of wooden wick candles and create a cozy and inviting atmosphere in your home.

Using Natural Bar Soap for Hair: Benefits and Tips (2023)

When it comes to hair care, using natural bar soap might not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, natural bar soap can be a fantastic option for those with sensitive scalps, and it can help to reduce your exposure to harsh chemicals. Here are some of the benefits of using natural bar soap for hair, as well as some tips for choosing the right product and getting the most out of it.

Benefits of Using Natural Bar Soap for Hair

pH Balance: The scalp is naturally slightly acidic, with a pH of around 5.5. Many commercial shampoos are alkaline, with a pH of 7 or higher, which can disrupt the scalp's natural protective barrier and lead to dryness, itching, and inflammation. Natural bar soaps, on the other hand, are often pH-balanced or slightly acidic, which can help to maintain the scalp's natural balance and reduce irritation.

Gentle Ingredients: Natural bar soaps are often made with simple, plant-based ingredients that are safe and gentle. Many commercial shampoos contain harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, which can strip the scalp of its natural oils and cause irritation. Natural bar soaps, on the other hand, can help to soothe and moisturize the scalp, leaving it feeling healthy and balanced.

Product Buildup: Many commercial shampoos contain silicones and other synthetic ingredients that can coat the hair shaft and lead to buildup over time. This can leave the hair looking dull and lifeless. Natural bar soaps, on the other hand, can help to gently remove buildup without stripping the hair of its natural oils.

Tips for Choosing and Using Natural Bar Soap for Hair

Look for a Shampoo Bar: When choosing a natural bar soap for hair, look for one that is specifically labeled as a shampoo bar or hair bar. These products are formulated with ingredients that are beneficial for scalp health and can help to cleanse and condition the hair without stripping it of its natural oils.

Check the Ingredients: Not all natural bar soaps are created equal. Some contain essential oils or other fragrances that can be irritating to the scalp, while others may not be pH-balanced or formulated for use on hair. Check the ingredient list to make sure it doesn't contain any potential irritants.

Wet Your Hair Thoroughly: To use a natural bar soap for hair, wet your hair thoroughly and then rub the bar directly onto your scalp, working it into a lather. Massage the lather into your scalp and hair, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Follow Up with a Conditioner or Vinegar Rinse: You may need to follow up with a conditioner or a vinegar rinse to help detangle your hair and restore its pH balance. Simply dilute a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water and pour it over your hair after rinsing out the soap.

How Safe Are Bath Bombs?

Do you know what is in your bath bombs? Many popular brand bath bombs contain ingredients that are straight up toxic!

More

When choosing a bath bomb, it's important to remember that not all bath bombs are created equal. It's like the difference between a well-maintained submarine and one that's been negligently kept; only one is going to give you a safe and smooth journey.

Among the key culprits often found in bath bombs are undisclosed fragrance oils. Fragrance companies aren't legally required to reveal what's in these oils, which can often contain chemicals like phthalates, parabens, and benzene.

Phthalates are often used to prolong the scent of fragrances, but they're also known endocrine disruptors. This means that they can interfere with your hormone system, potentially leading to reproductive and developmental issues. There's also evidence to suggest they may be linked to an increased risk of breast cancer.

Parabens, meanwhile, are often used as preservatives in cosmetics and personal care products. However, they can mimic the hormone estrogen in the body's cells, and while a direct link between parabens and cancer is still being studied, some research suggests an association between the two.

Benzene is another concerning chemical often found in fragrance oils. It's classified as a human carcinogen, and exposure to it has been linked to a range of health issues, including leukemia and other blood cell cancers.Artificial dyes are another common ingredient to be wary of. These are often used to make bath bombs look appealing, but they can be absorbed through the skin and have been linked to a number of health problems, such as cancer and hyperactivity in children.

Another ingredient to be cautious of is talc, which is sometimes included for its absorbent properties. However, if it's not completely pure, it can contain asbestos, a known carcinogen. Some studies suggest a link between talc in cosmetics and an increased risk of ovarian cancer.

On the other hand, bath bombs that are made from natural and transparently listed ingredients are a much safer choice. These bath bombs use 100% essential oils, which can provide beneficial properties and pleasant natural scents without the need for synthetic chemicals. The colorants in these bath bombs come from natural sources like clays, vegetables, or fruits, avoiding the need for potentially harmful artificial dyes.

Additionally, they often contain skin-friendly surfactants like Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA) and Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI), which are derived from plant sources and effectively cleanse the skin without causing dryness or irritation.

In essence, while navigating the bath bomb market might initially seem as challenging as steering a submarine through treacherous waters or navigating a Titanic-sized ship, it's worth taking the time to investigate what's in your bath bomb. Remember, the safety of your bath products is paramount to your overall wellbeing. Choose wisely, select natural, toxin-free bath bombs, and enjoy the benefits of a truly relaxing and healthy bath.

Also purchase bath bombs from companies that are transparent with their ingredients. Exposure to the above chemicals listed is especially dangerous for babies and young children so make sure to use natural non-toxic bath bombs in their baths. Choose one with gentle essential oils like lavender or chamomile. Here are the ingredients that are in some natural bath bombs:

SLSA POWDER - Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate: Not to be confused with SLS, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. SLSA powder is is derived from coconut and palm oils and is classified as a safe skin friendly surfactant for both skin and hair because of its large molecular structure. This mild plant derived surfactant creates a lather that effectively removes surface oil, dirt, and bacteria, without stripping or drying sensitive skin.

SCI POWDER - Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate: A surfactant based on fatty acids from coconut oil and isoethionic acid, a type of sulfonic acid. It’s excellent for soap, lotion, bath bomb, and other commercial uses. SCI acts as a foaming and cleansing agent. Commonly used in shampoos, shower gels, soaps, and bath bombs.

Citric Acid: Citric acid exists in a variety of fruits and vegetables and gives them their tart, sour taste.

Baking Soda: Sodium bicarbonate is a salt composed of a sodium cation and a bicarbonate anion. So next time you plan to take a nice soak with a bath bomb ask yourself: What’s in my bath bomb?
