Investment to support UK growth and US expansion

The investment round was led by Axiom Equity, a specialist B2B software as a service (SaaS) growth equity fund, with existing investor Mercia Ventures also participating. Risk Ledger said the funding will strengthen its customer network in the UK and accelerate its vision of Active Supply Chain Security.

The London-based company said the new funding will help bring more organisations onto its network while expanding the intelligence shared between participants. It also plans to invest in AI-powered tools designed to automate manual security reviews and identify supply chain risks that traditional point solutions may not detect.

In addition, the investment will support Risk Ledger’s expansion into the United States, where the company said supply chain breaches and regulatory pressures are increasing.

Network-first approach to supply chain security

Risk Ledger said traditional third-party risk management assesses suppliers individually and at a single point in time, making it less suited to modern supply chains that involve interconnected organisations.

Its platform uses a network-first approach, allowing each supplier to complete a single standardised assessment that is maintained in real time and shared across connected organisations. The company said this creates a continuously updated view of supply chain risk and forms the basis of its Active Supply Chain Security model.

According to Risk Ledger, more than 16,000 organisations are now connected to its network across sectors including financial services, insurance, critical national infrastructure, and central and regional government.

AI development forms part of growth strategy

The company said the Series B funding will support the development of a new generation of AI tools built on its network data.

These tools are intended to automate manual review processes for security teams while identifying risk signals across supply chains. Risk Ledger said the technology is enabled by the scale of data generated through its growing customer network.

Founded in 2018 by Haydn Brooks and Daniel Saul, Risk Ledger said its platform was developed to address supply chain security through collaboration rather than isolated assessments. The company said its network enables organisations to identify concentration risks and nth-party dependencies by replacing repetitive supplier questionnaires with a single, continuously maintained assessment shared across connected organisations.

Emissions intensity declines despite portfolio growth

The company’s fourth annual sustainability report outlines environmental, social and governance (ESG) progress during 2025, including a reduction in emissions intensity to 3.58 kilograms of CO2e per overnight stay. Although overall company emissions increased by 3.1 per cent following the addition of four new properties, a&o said the increase reflected its expanded portfolio rather than a rise in emissions intensity.

a&o operates 46 properties, providing approximately 31,600 beds across 32 cities in 10 European countries.

According to the report, CO2e emissions per overnight stay fell from 2024 levels to 3.58 kilograms, while total company emissions increased to 13,575 metric tons after four additional properties were acquired and converted into a&o accommodation during 2025.

In total it welcomed nearly three million guests during the year, accounting for 6.6 million overnight stays.

Building conversion strategy supports sustainability goals

Property conversion remains a central part of a&o’s sustainability strategy and of the company’s 46 locations, 43 are conversions of existing buildings rather than new developments.

During 2025, a&o opened four new locations, including London Docklands Riverside, located within a historic 17th-century warehouse complex on the River Thames.

The next major project is the conversion of a vacant office building on Rudi-Dutschke-Straße into a&o Berlin Checkpoint Charlie.

In partnership with the Technical University of Berlin, a&o is undertaking a life cycle assessment study for the project, with the aim of creating a blueprint for future building conversions.

Renewable energy and operational improvements

The report highlights several operational initiatives aimed at reducing emissions within a&o’s own operations and value chain.

All locations now source 100 per cent green electricity where it is available. Other initiatives include fully digital guest registration to reduce paper use, collaboration with suppliers, waste reduction measures and a continued focus on improving energy efficiency.

It also avoids external carbon offsetting solutions and instead focuses on direct, measurable emissions reductions.

The three properties recording the lowest emissions per overnight stay were:

• a&o Kopenhagen Sydhavnen (1.88 kilograms)
• a&o Kopenhagen Norrebro (1.93 kilograms)
• a&o Berlin Mitte (2.24 kilograms)

Social initiatives remain part of ESG strategy

Alongside its environmental initiatives, a&o continued investing in employee development and community programmes during 2025.

The company invested €378,000 in training and continuing education, representing an eight per cent increase compared with 2024.

Its social initiatives also include the a&o educare programme, which supports solidarity-funded school trips through the everyonecantravel.app platform and the “Everyone Comes Along” relief fund for low-income families.

Through a&o cultura e storia, the company is supporting restoration of the Villa Mocenigo neoclassical complex in Italy’s Veneto region in partnership with local educational, cultural and administrative organisations.

a&o also supports a range of sporting initiatives, including sponsorship of the Austrian women’s national team competing at the Homeless World Cup in collaboration with Caritas Graz.

CEO outlines long-term sustainability commitment

 Long-term partnership advances energy storage deployment

The project follows the companies’ announcement last year to work together on scaling Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery technology and supporting Google’s ambition to expand access to affordable, secure and 24/7 clean energy for electricity grids globally. It also follows the announcement earlier this month of a 19 MW/200 MWh project in Arizona involving Energy Dome, Google and local utility SRP.

Energy Dome will develop, own and operate the County Offaly facility using its proprietary CO2 Battery technology.

The system stores energy by using electricity from the grid to compress and store CO2 before expanding it through a turbine to generate electricity when required.

 Supporting Ireland’s electricity system

The Irish Government has identified long-duration energy storage as an important technology for improving security of electricity supply, reducing system costs and supporting its target of reaching 80 per cent renewable electricity by 2030.

Google and Energy Dome said the project is intended to demonstrate how long-duration energy storage can contribute to an affordable, secure and clean electricity system. The CO2 Battery is designed to absorb surplus electricity during periods of oversupply and dispatch stored energy during periods of high demand, helping to balance the grid while easing local congestion.

Strategic location in County Offaly

The project will be located near Rhode in County Offaly, close to a key node on the Irish electricity grid where high-voltage transmission lines serve the Greater Dublin metropolitan area.

According to the companies, expanding energy infrastructure in this part of Ireland is important for supporting economic growth in areas of increasing electricity demand.

The project is being developed in partnership with Lumcloon Energy, a Midlands-based developer. It will be built on the site of a former peat-fired thermal power plant, repurposing brownfield industrial land for clean energy infrastructure.

The location is also close to the Rhode Green Energy Park, where renewable energy resources, including solar and wind, experience curtailment because of grid congestion. By storing excess electricity for later use, the project aims to reduce congestion and avoid the need for additional transmission infrastructure.

Partnership supports international deployment

Energy Dome said its CO2 Battery technology uses readily available, off-the-shelf components rather than relying on lithium-ion batteries or other critical minerals. The company said the technology is intended to provide dispatchable, long-duration energy storage while supporting energy security, resilience and reliability as electricity demand increases.

Project expected online in 2028

Vanessa Hartley, Head of Google Ireland, said: “At Google, we are committed to catalysing next-generation energy technologies to bolster grid resilience and introduce critical storage capacity to the system. This milestone is a next step in our long-term partnership with Energy Dome, and will help scale their promising long-duration energy storage technology, charging ahead to an affordable, secure and clean energy future.”

The project has secured land, planning consent and a grid connection. It has also been awarded a 10-year capacity contract by EirGrid, the State-owned transmission system operator, and is expected to begin operations in 2028.

Manufacturing expansion

Intel has announced a €5 billion capital investment at its Leixlip campus in Ireland, marking the next phase of manufacturing expansion at one of the company’s most advanced semiconductor facilities.

The investment is intended to increase production capacity for Intel Xeon 6 and next generation Intel Xeon processors built on the Intel 3 process node, as global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing continues to grow.

The expansion will increase manufacturing output, advance research and development activities, and utilise capacity within existing cleanroom facilities while supporting Europe’s semiconductor supply chain.

Advanced manufacturing investment

It includes upgrades to existing fabrication facilities and the installation of leading-edge manufacturing equipment.

Infrastructure improvements will include the expansion of the campus’s automated track system, integrating multiple manufacturing modules into a single high-velocity production environment.

Intel said execution of the €5 billion capital expenditure programme began earlier this year.

The project is expected to create permanent high-technology roles at Intel while engaging specialised tradespeople during construction and equipment installation.

“This €5 billion investment represents a definitive commitment to maximize capacity at our Leixlip campus and increase what we can deliver to Intel Foundry customers,” said Naga Chandrasekaran, Executive Vice President, Chief Technology and Operations Officer and General Manager of Intel Foundry.

“By investing in our existing fabs with state-of-the-art technology and installing cutting-edge tools, we are not just increasing output of critical products like Xeon 6 and next gen Intel Xeon processors built on Intel 3, we are ensuring that Ireland remains at the forefront of the world’s most advanced manufacturing ecosystems, while strengthening the region’s role in the global technology landscape.”

Semiconductor supply chain

The investment supports continued growth of Ireland’s semiconductor ecosystem while strengthening Europe’s manufacturing capabilities and the project contributes to the European Union’s technology sovereignty ambitions by supporting a resilient domestic supply of leading-edge processors.

Intel has invested more than €30 billion in Ireland since establishing operations in 1989. The Leixlip campus employs 4,900 people and serves as one of the company’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing sites.

AI-driven manufacturing demand

Intel said the investment is driven by increasing demand for advanced silicon used in AI factories and high-performance computing applications.

Supply chain pressures remain elevated

Global supply chain pressures remained elevated in June despite lower oil prices and easing transportation costs, according to the latest GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index.

The monthly index, based on a survey of 27,000 businesses, found that uncertainty surrounding the US-Iran ceasefire in the Strait of Hormuz continued to influence procurement and supply chain activity.

Manufacturers reported the highest level of order backlogs caused by shortages of critical inputs since late 2022, indicating that supply chain bottlenecks are likely to persist into at least the third quarter.

Procurement teams increase buffer inventories

Manufacturers continued building buffer inventories during June to reduce the risk of further disruption.

Reports of safety stockpiling increased again and remained at their highest level since January 2023, while demand for raw materials, commodities and intermediate goods remained strong across North America and Asia.

In contrast, European manufacturers reduced input purchasing during the month.

“The rise in stockpiling and persistent order backlogs point to one clear conclusion: businesses still don’t trust the global trading environment to remain stable,” said John Piatek, Vice President, Consulting, GEP.

“Despite lower oil prices and easing transportation costs, companies continue buying ahead because they expect further disruption. While this is encouraging for the global economy in the near term, it also shows manufacturers remain very cautious and are planning for more disruption in international trade.”

Regional supply chain trends

• The GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index remained above zero across all major regions in June, indicating that supply chain capacity continued to be stretched.
• Asia recorded an index reading of 1.95, down from 2.96 in May and its lowest level since March. GEP attributed the decline primarily to easing transportation cost inflation.
• North America’s index declined to 1.17 from 1.69, also a three-month low. Despite the easing in overall supply chain pressure, manufacturers significantly increased purchasing activity in response to shortages of critical items and growing order backlogs.
• Europe’s index fell to 1.13 from 1.43. Manufacturers reduced purchasing volumes to the greatest extent since the outbreak of the Middle East war, although inventory levels continued to increase.
• The UK index declined to 1.05 from 1.34, its lowest level since April, as manufacturers reduced activity.

Purchasing activity remains resilient

Demand for production inputs remained strong globally during June, driven primarily by North America and Asia.

In the United States, manufacturers increased purchases of raw materials, commodities and intermediate goods at the fastest rate since April 2022. Purchasing activity also accelerated in Japan, China and Vietnam.

The report found that European manufacturers moved in the opposite direction, reducing purchasing volumes during the month.

Inventory strategies and material shortages

Inventory growth continued as procurement teams sought to protect operations against future supply disruptions and price increases.

Reports of stockpiled materials increasing due to supply or pricing concerns reached their highest level since January 2023, extending the sustained rise seen since the Middle East war began.

Although the indicator measuring material shortages declined during June, suggesting some improvement in global supply availability, shortages remained elevated compared with historical averages. Manufacturers also reported that work backlogs continued to rise because of inadequate availability of critical inputs.

Transportation and labour conditions

Transportation costs declined during June following a sharp fall in global oil prices. However, GEP said transportation costs remained high by historical standards and, excluding April and May, were at their highest level since June 2022.

Labour shortages were less of a constraint on manufacturing capacity. Reports of production backlogs caused by workforce shortages remained broadly in line with historical averages.

What is the GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index

The GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index is produced by S&P Global and GEP. It is derived from S&P Global’s PMI surveys, sent to companies in over 40 countries, totalling around 27,000 companies. The headline figure is a weighted sum of six sub-indices derived from PMI data, PMI Comments Trackers and PMI Commodity Price & Supply Indicators compiled by S&P Global.

• A value above 0 indicates that supply chain capacity is being stretched and supply chain volatility is increasing. The further above 0, the greater the extent to which capacity is being stretched.
• A value below 0 indicates that supply chain capacity is being underutilised, reducing supply chain volatility. The further below 0, the greater the extent to which capacity is being underutilised.

A RENEWED STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

Having started as a collaboration in 2020 to support refugees across different regions of the globe, Inditex – one of the world’s largest fashion retailers – and UNHCR – the UN Refugee Agency – have announced the renewal of their strategic partnership in order to improve safety and climate resilience in Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh.

The renewed partnership agreement was signed by Barham Salih, Former President of Iraq and UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and Óscar García Maceiras, CEO of Inditex. Specifically, Inditex has confirmed it will allocate €13 million between 2026 and 2028 to improve the living conditions of nearly 1.2 million refugees, including the provision of clothing, footwear, and home goods.

The company has emphasised the support for these forcibly displaced individuals as part of its community investment strategy.

“For more than two decades, we have worked continuously with leading social organisations on international cooperation and humanitarian aid projects supporting refugees and forcibly displaced people across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Maintaining this commitment and continuing to contribute to this cause is a source of inspiration for everyone at Inditex,” states Óscar García Maceiras.

The collaborative project is implemented under an Integrated Settlement Planning approach. This will prioritise the enhancement of community safety, support of relocation to lower-risk areas, and improvement of essential infrastructure, alongside climate adaptation measures to address the impact of increasingly common extreme weather patterns in vulnerable humanitarian contexts.

Located in Cox’s Bazar, which is one of the largest refugee settlements in the world and the most exposed to climate risks, these camps are facing myriad natural disasters, including landslides, flooding, heatwaves, and lightning storms. This makes it all the more critical to improve current conditions and advance more sustainable and resilient solutions for the future.

CREATING LASTING CHANGE

Alongside this project, the agreement between Inditex and UNHCR will increase the distribution of basic relief items in additional humanitarian operations. Inditex will donate approximately 7.5 million items of clothing and footwear to refugees in Uganda, Chad, and other countries, as well as dedicate €2 million for the logistics costs associated with such distributions.

According to Barham Salih, “This partnership demonstrates the vital role the private sector can play in standing with refugees and the communities that host them. These resources will help strengthen safety and climate resilience for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, whilst helping families meet urgent needs and lay the foundations for a more hopeful future.”

The partnership between these two organisations extends beyond financial support and donations; it emphasises collaborating closely to improve safety and living conditions in refugee settlements, promoting climate adaptation measures, and creating opportunities for refugee inclusion in labour markets. Additionally, it leverages private sector knowledge through pro bono initiatives to improve efficiency, sustainability, and the implementation of humanitarian solutions.

The contributions from Inditex stem from the funds it has raised via the sale of paper shopping bags and envelopes, launched in 2021 to encourage reusable alternatives for shoppers. It directly complements other environmental projects Inditex participates in with a range of partner organisations.

It is through this combination of resources, expertise, innovation, and shared commitment to refugees that the partnership between Inditex and UNHCR showcases how organisations can work together to improve lives whilst implementing lasting changes in global communities.

A Pathway to Reduced Lifecycle Emissions

Hapag-Lloyd and Seaspan Corporation have completed the first conversion under their joint methanol retrofit programme, upgrading the vessel Seaspan Yangtze to dual-fuel capability.

The retrofit, delivered in collaboration with Everllence, involved converting a conventional MAN S90 engine to enable operation on methanol, providing a pathway to reduced lifecycle emissions and greater fuel optionality across the fleet.

First Vessel Delivered in Five-Ship Retrofit Programme

The Seaspan Yangtze is the first of five 10,100 TEU charter vessels included in the retrofit programme.

The remaining vessels in scope include Seaspan Amazon, Seaspan Ganges, Seaspan Thames and Seaspan Zambezi. The total investment across the five retrofits is estimated at approximately USD$120 million.

The programme represents a structured approach to fleet decarbonisation through the upgrading of existing assets, alongside broader investment in newbuild vessels and alternative fuel capability.

Fuel Flexibility and Emissions Reduction Potential

Once operating on low-carbon methanol, each converted vessel is expected to reduce CO2e emissions by approximately 30,000 to 50,000 metric tons per year.

In addition to emissions reduction potential, the retrofits are designed to extend the operational life of existing tonnage while increasing fuel flexibility across container shipping operations.

Silke Lehmköster, Managing Director Fleet at Hapag-Lloyd, said: “Retrofitting existing vessels is an important lever on our way to decarbonize our fleet operations by 2045. The successful conversion of the Seaspan Yangtze shows that technical innovation and close cooperation with strong partners can make proven vessels ready for the use of low-carbon fuels. For our customers, this is another concrete step towards more sustainable supply chains.”

Retrofit Programme Supports Fleet Transition Strategy

The methanol conversion programme forms part of Hapag-Lloyd’s wider fleet decarbonisation strategy, which combines new vessel orders, dual-fuel retrofits, operational efficiency improvements and alternative fuel sourcing.

The company says that retrofitting existing ships plays a critical role in accelerating emissions reductions across the installed base while supporting longer-term fleet transition goals.

Strengthening Decarbonised Supply Chains

The completion of the first retrofit is intended to support more sustainable ocean transport options for global supply chains, particularly as cargo owners increasingly prioritise emissions visibility and Scope 3 reduction targets.

By enabling existing vessels to operate on alternative fuels such as methanol, the programme aims to provide additional flexibility in fuel sourcing while maintaining continuity of global liner services.

Strategic Collaboration Across Maritime Value Chain

The retrofit was delivered through collaboration between Hapag-Lloyd, Seaspan Corporation and Everllence, highlighting the role of cross-sector partnerships in enabling maritime decarbonisation.

Coordinated investment in retrofits and dual-fuel technologies is becoming an increasingly important pathway for accelerating the transition to low-carbon shipping while maximising the use of existing fleet assets.

What is the Philips’ Future Health Index 2026?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already changing how healthcare professionals work across the UK, helping clinicians save time, expand capacity and support decision-making, according to the Philips Future Health Index 2026 report.

The findings show that healthcare professionals are seeing measurable benefits from AI-enabled tools, while also highlighting gaps in training and organisational readiness as adoption accelerates.

AI Supports Clinical Efficiency and Patient Care

The Future Health Index 2026, described by Philips as the largest global survey of its kind, draws on perspectives from healthcare professionals and patients across the UK and internationally.

The report found that 42 per cent of UK clinicians using AI-enabled tools say the technology saves them at least 132 hours per year on average, equivalent to more than three full working weeks.

More than a third (36 per cent) of clinicians also said AI is helping them see more patients, with respondents reporting an average increase of seven additional patients per week.

The findings suggest that time saved through AI is being redirected towards patient care, with 52 per cent of clinicians reporting that AI enables more detailed interactions with patients.

AI Adoption Improves Decision-Making and Work-Life Balance

According to the report, AI is also supporting clinicians in their day-to-day roles, with 57 per cent reporting greater confidence in clinical decision-making.

Nearly half (45 per cent) of respondents said AI has improved their work-life balance, indicating that the technology is contributing to changes in how healthcare professionals manage workloads.

Mark Leftwich, Managing Director, Philips UK & Ireland, said:

“These findings come at a critical moment for the NHS. Healthcare teams are facing rising demand, persistent workforce shortages and pressure to reduce waiting lists, while also adapting to one of the most significant technological shifts in decades.”

“What stands out is the pace of change. Clinicians are already using AI to save time, support decision-making and create more capacity for patient care. Healthcare systems are now having to evolve around that reality.”

“AI is not a replacement for clinicians, but it can help give valuable time back to healthcare teams. The challenge now is making sure these benefits can be scaled safely and consistently across the health system. Clinicians are already changing how they work with AI. Healthcare organisations need the infrastructure, training and governance to help turn that momentum into lasting improvements in patient care.”

Healthcare AI Training Gaps Remain

While AI adoption is increasing, the report highlights challenges around workforce preparation and access to suitable tools.

Nearly three-quarters (74 per cent) of clinicians said AI training within their organisation is inadequate, inconsistent or unavailable.

More than half (56 per cent) reported using personal AI tools when workplace solutions do not meet their needs, suggesting that healthcare organisations face challenges in providing the infrastructure and support required for safe and consistent adoption.

Building Readiness for the Next Phase of AI in Healthcare

The report suggests the future success of AI adoption will depend not only on access to technology, but also on how effectively healthcare organisations support workforce readiness, strengthen governance and integrate AI safely into clinical practice.

Dr. Qaiser Malik, Clinical Director of Radiology at MSE NHS Trust, said, “This is an important piece of work that highlights how AI is beginning to shape the future of healthcare. We need more evidence like this to help the medical community harness technology and navigate an increasingly challenging healthcare landscape.”

“There also needs to be more work around regulation and real-world applications of AI, rather than esoteric solutions that do not make a meaningful difference in practice.”

Philips said the findings demonstrate that clinicians are already adapting to AI-enabled ways of working, while healthcare systems now need to develop the capabilities required to scale these technologies safely and effectively.

A Landmark Moment in British Baking

Associated British Foods (ABF) has completed its acquisition of Hovis Group Limited from Endless LLP, marking the start of a new combined UK bakery business operating under the Hovis Bakeries name.

The transaction brings together Hovis Group and Allied Bakeries, ABF’s UK bakery business, with the aim of creating a sustainably profitable business with a stronger market position and greater operational scale.

Operational Benefits

Integration of the two businesses will begin shortly, with ABF expecting the combination to deliver operational synergies and efficiencies across production and distribution.

According to the company, these efficiencies are intended to improve profitability, strengthen the resilience of the combined business and support future investment in brands and product innovation.

ABF said restructuring activities required to achieve these benefits will involve upfront costs and will be carried out efficiently and with care.

The company expects the acquisition to be marginally dilutive to earnings during financial year 2027 while integration activities are undertaken, before becoming accretive thereafter.

New Business to Operate as Hovis Bakeries

From completion of the acquisition, Allied Bakeries and Hovis Group will operate as Hovis Bakeries under the brand line, Nourishing the Nation.

The combined business plans to invest in growing segments of the UK bakery category, including healthier product options, in response to changing consumer preferences.

Focus on Manufacturing and Distribution

ABF said the enlarged bakery business will benefit from enhanced production and distribution capabilities as the two operations are integrated.

The company expects the combined manufacturing footprint and distribution network to improve operational performance while supporting future product development and customer service.

SUPPORTING GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY

Approximately 25 years ago, IKEA, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), and the Sabah Foundation began the restoration of a heavily degraded rainforest in Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia, calling it the Sow a Seed initiative.

In the quarter of a century since, 18,500 hectares of land have been restored and protected, making it one of the largest and longest-running tropical rainforest restoration projects in the world.

In the wake of these results, IKEA and its partners have announced the next phase of the initiative – the Living Rainforest Restoration Lab. This new initiative will highlight the shift from on-site restoration to research and knowledge sharing in order to support global biodiversity conservation and the mitigation of climate change.

“We are proud to carry forward our founder Ingvar Kamprad’s long-standing commitment to restoring and protecting forests. As the urgency to halt biodiversity loss grows, Sow a Seed shows what is possible: degraded rainforests can recover. Over nearly 30 years, the project has not only restored forests and biodiversity but also generated valuable knowledge. With the Living Rainforest Restoration Lab, we now want to share these insights more broadly, so they can help guide the restoration of other degraded rainforests around the world,” notes Lena Julle, Chief Sustainability Officer, Inter IKEA Group.

Specifically, the initiative assisted via natural forest regeneration, comprising the planting of five million seedlings from around 90 indigenous large tree species, and the nurturing of these trees to maturity. This has also encouraged endemic wildlife to return, such as pygmy elephants, orangutans, clouded leopards, and hornbills, amongst many others.

A REAL-WORLD RESEARCH PLATFORM

The official launch of the Living Rainforest Restoration Lab signifies a transition from hands-on restoration to a stronger focus on collaborative research, learning, and knowledge sharing. The initiative’s goal is to translate practical restoration insights into methods applicable across tropical forests globally.

IKEA has committed to funding the research programme for the next 10 years, with the lab supporting scientists and practitioners in developing and scaling effective restoration approaches through collaboration with academia.

“We aim to empower policymakers and the growing number of restoration practitioners with better knowledge, so that more rainforests can be restored more efficiently. A substantial part of the programme is dedicated to spreading the knowledge of best practices. The 24 research projects in this programme will therefore make a significant contribution to our global targets to conserve biodiversity and mitigate climate change on a substantially larger scale than the initial projects,” states Ulrik Ilstedt, Programme Leader at SLU.

Through the combination of long-term field data, restored landscapes, and scientific expertise, this real-world research platform provides valuable insight into topics such as biodiversity recovery, ecosystem functions, and climate benefits, including carbon storage, water regulation, and soil health.

The Living Rainforest Restoration Lab, launched by IKEA, SLU, and the Sabah Foundation, is a proud step forward for global biodiversity conservation and climate change action.

Next-Generation IoT Connectivity

Maersk has begun deploying next-generation IoT connectivity devices across its refrigerated container (reefer) fleet as part of a multi-year programme designed to enhance real-time tracking, data consistency and operational reliability in temperature-controlled logistics.

The upgrade is intended to replace all existing IoT devices across the reefer fleet over the coming years, with approximately 30 per cent of containers already fitted with the new technology.

Standardising Cold Chain Connectivity

The rollout forms part of Maersk’s broader effort to standardise digital infrastructure across its logistics network following the completion of its new digital connectivity platform across 450 vessels.

The company says the transition to a single generation of devices will improve data consistency and provide customers with a more reliable end-to-end view of refrigerated cargo throughout transit.

Bruce Marshall, Head of Reefer Cargo at A.P. Moller – Maersk, said: “As real-time access and data availability grow increasingly vital for our cold chain customers, the deployment of our next-generation IoT devices will provide them with a much more reliable data flow throughout the container journey.”

He added: “Our fleet’s new digital platform has created a solid foundation for the future. The next step is to replace all existing IoT devices across our reefer fleet with the latest generation of technology, and we have already begun this work. After years of operating with several generations of devices, this upgrade will standardise our devices and deliver a more consistent customer experience.”

Enhancing Supply Chain Visibility

The upgraded IoT devices are designed to support improved monitoring of temperature-controlled cargo from origin to destination, strengthening visibility for supply chain operators managing perishable and high-value goods.

Since 2019, Maersk has provided customers with access to its Captain Peter visibility platform, which enables shipment tracking from container sealing through to final delivery.

The company said that improving data availability across its reefer fleet will further strengthen this visibility offering and enable more advanced use of operational data across customer supply chains.

From Visibility to Predictive Insights

The next phase of development aims to move beyond tracking functionality towards more data-driven decision support tools for customers.

Bruce Marshall said: “For reefer customers, confidence that data is always available is crucial. That experience will improve markedly once our entire reefer fleet is fitted with the latest generation of connectivity devices. The upgrade will also provide the building blocks to introduce new features that will further strengthen the customer offering in the future. We want to pivot our current offering from being just a visibility product to being an intelligent tool that helps customers interpret data and provide recommended actions.”

Fleet-Wide Digital Upgrade Programme

To date, approximately 30 per cent of Maersk’s reefer fleet has been upgraded with the new IoT devices.

The new devices offer increased processing power compared to previous generations and support 4G and 5G connectivity, while remaining backwards compatible with 2G and 3G networks.

The devices are also designed to improve operational safety compliance and include IMO-compliant specifications. In addition, they are powered through energy-harvesting solar technology to support continuous connectivity across long-haul shipments.

INVESTING IN SOLAR GROWTH  

Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer, is reinforcing its commitment to renewable energy in Iberia following the acquisition of its first two solar parks in Spain. 

The move expands the company’s renewable energy presence in one of its key markets and builds on a global investment strategy that has already seen €4.3 billion invested or committed in renewable energy projects through Ingka Investments. 

The acquisitions comprise the operational La Oliva solar farm in Toledo and a second solar park in Los Alcázares, Murcia. 

Currently generating an estimated 51 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity annually, La Oliva is already contributing renewable power to Spain’s grid, whilst the Murcia project is expected to deliver a further 55GWh each year. Combined, the two sites will provide around 106GWh of renewable energy annually, adding to the country’s expanding clean energy capacity. 

Against a backdrop of continued energy price volatility and supply uncertainty across Europe, Ingka Group believes the projects will strengthen both local renewable generation and wider regional energy resilience. 

Frederik de Jong, Head of Renewable Energy at Ingka Investments, explained the strategic importance of the investment. 

“At a time when Europe continues to face energy price volatility and supply uncertainty, the projects in Villasequilla (Toledo) and Los Alcázares (Murcia) reinforce the region’s ability to build resilience and strengthen the interconnected energy system.  

EXPANDING ACROSS THE PENINSULA  

The Spanish solar parks form part of a wider programme of renewable energy investment across the Iberian Peninsula. 

In neighbouring Portugal, Ingka Investments is enhancing its existing wind farm by adding solar panels to create a hybrid renewable energy asset. The project is intended to increase energy output, improve grid stability, and maximise the value of existing infrastructure. 

Once the Spanish solar parks and Portuguese hybrid project are fully integrated, Ingka Investments’ renewable energy production across Iberia will total 323GWh annually, with further expansion planned. 

Beyond increasing renewable generation, the investments reflect Ingka Group’s ambition to support a more resilient and interconnected European energy system. 

Karen Pflug, Chief Sustainability Officer of Ingka Group, believes expanding renewable infrastructure will be key to meeting both climate and energy security objectives. 

A LONG-TERM COMMITMENT
