I want to say a few words more...doing this show has helped me with my recovery...it sharpens my communication, and the music itself is a tonic for me. My internal organs dance along.

Now, I always put great effort into tune selection and the order I play them. There is a narrative built into each one, which may require some knowledge of current music to decipher. One tune to the next...there is always a reason..musical or historic link. For instance, I once followed Shel Silverstein's 'I Was Stoned And I Missed It' with 'A Boy Named Sue', because Shel wrote that song!

I'm Still Hear

After a long break...several months; because...weird thing...I had a stroke in January. But now, as part of my healing path, I'm preparing a new show. Check back here later or get on my mailing list...just email me at nelson at wombnet dot com, and say you want to be on it. Or if you are on mixcloud...just watch out for a notification. It's called 'Still Hear'. Playlist and links will be posted on this site in due course. It is a collision of several incomplete playlists from my past...mainly 'Songs My Daddy Taught Me' about the music I inherited from my father's naive taste. Another playlist involved in this pile up is 'Time'...which is all songs mentioning, or about Time. Plus a few other tunes that grabbed my ear. This is very probably the last gasp for Eclectic Music For Mind and Bodhi...unless I get that call/email from the BBC that I've been waiting for for 20 years...well, you never know. But that is unlikely and would be a fookin miracle.

I feel I must apologise for the many mistakes in my commentary...but you see I currently have the short term memory and attention span of a fish. One mistake in particular that I want to correct is that I refer to Peter Hook as the bass player and vocalist of Joy Division...that was of course the remarkable Ian Curtis. Hook was the bassist and principle song writer.

At Last The 2005 Show

This month's title is a reference to a television programme, 'At Last The 1948 Show', that only British people of advanced years will remember. I never saw it, but I heard plenty about it, because it was the first appearance on main stream TV of many who later became stalwarts of British comedy...The Pythons, The Goodies etc. It was broadcast in 1967. (A clip below.) I broadcast my first EMFAB show in 2005.

All this month's tunes were released, or re-released, in 2022. That statement is not true, but it is nearly true. A nice distinction.

This month's Eclectic Music For Mind And Bodhi is an indulgent celebration of my sixtieth birthday, which falls at the end of February (George Harrison, Renoir, Rashida Jones).

I did something like this for my 50th, called, imaginatively, 'Fifty', in which I selected what I considered 50 of the best tunes I'd ever heard and merged them, edited down, into a 2 hour show for Dandelion Radio. You can download that old show here Fifty

This time, I haven't tried any fancy editing, but just selected a bunch of songs that I listen to frequently, quite often during drunken sentimental youtube expeditions. These are songs that haunt me. Some are quite well known. A few you won't have heard of. If you do know all of them...well, come over one evening...we'll share a few bottles and eviscerate my CD collection.

This month's Eclectic Music For Mind And Bodhi doesn't have the answers you're looking for. It contains no secrets of the universe, no wisdom of the ages, no hidden messages of divine or secular importance. It is not esoteric or obscure, nor dark nor oblique. It is transparent and entirely meaningless.

As well as the usual scattershot of new releases, I focus on 2 particular areas of interest: the most enduring word in the English language, and the wide use and origin of the sample 'I don't know what this world is coming to'.

The album of the month this time is 'The Winter Mission' by Brad Barr. Brad Barr is an American guitarist and singer-songwriter, best known for his work with The Slip, The Barr Brothers and Surprise Me Mr. Davis. 'The Winter Mission', his 2nd solo album after a gap of 14 years, is an record of scintillating beauty. The duo of Yuki Chikudate and James Hanna were active in New York from 2001 until 2013, when they announced an indefinite hiatus...a euphemism for jacking it in, but maybe not. THE HEART SŪTRA

The Bodhisattva of Compassion,

When he meditated deeply,

Saw the emptiness of all five skandhas

And sundered the bonds that caused him suffering.

Hear then,

Form is no other than emptiness,

Emptiness no other than form.

Form is only emptiness,

Emptiness only form.

Feeling, thought and choice,

Consciousness itself

Are the same as this.

All things are the primal void,

Which is not born or destroyed;

Nor is it stained or pure,

Nor does it wax or wane.

So, in emptiness, no form,

No feeling, thought, or choice,

Nor is there consciousness.

No eye, ear, tongue, body, mind;

No colour, sound, smell, taste, touch,

Or what the mind takes hold of,

Nor even act of sensing.

No ignorance or end of it,

Nor all that comes from ignorance;

No withering, no death,

No end of them.

Nor is there pain or cause of pain,

Or cease in pain, or noble path

To lead from pain;

Not even wisdom to attain!

Attainment too is emptiness.

So know that the Bodhisattva

Holding to nothing whatever,

But dwelling in Prajña wisdom,

Is freed of delusive hindrance,

Rid of the fear bred by it,

And reaches clearest Nirvāna.

All Buddhas past and present,

Buddhas of future time,

Using this Prajñā wisom,

Come to full and perfect vision.

Hear then the great dhāranī,

The radiant peerless mantra,

The Pranjñāpāramitā

Whose words allay all pain;

Hear and believe its truth!

Take the sense cards from your Welcome Pack. During the installation, constantly rub your fingertips gently back and forth alternately across the smooth side and the rough side. At the relevant markers within the performance, scratch each side with a finger nail, inhaling the aromas deeply as you do. Finally, at the crescendo of the final tune, eat the cards. February got away with me. Suddenly it was March. I did compile a playlist for this month's show, but I couldn't seem to summon up the juice. Then we were in the car and listening to this old mix I did in 2015 for a dear friend's 65th birthday. I've never published it or even shared it with anyone else. I consider it a private, intimate gift. But here it is, with my friends permission, because it's time to let it loose. It's about an hour long, and exceedingly tender. I hope it grooves you.

A few days late...never mind. Sometimes it's hard to find the few days necessary to make this happen. My life's quite busy. I'm not sure I like it. I've avoided being busy, generally, all my life. It makes the time speed by, having things...plans...to fill it. But right now I'm even having to keep a written schedule to know what I'm doing from day to day. I've always been an in-the-moment sort of person, longing for the old times...the old village life we once all lived, where we knew everyone and had little to do but forage for food. Lying in the sun...swimming...socialising...getting drunk...xxxxing...no .gov, no religion, no job, no time table...no time...May we all get back there was soon as possible. Fxxk progress. Fxxk the internet.

So, yeah. Whoops.

Last week I drowned my laptop. Didn't mean to. It wasn't murder, it was an accident...honestly. If it had been the other way up in the bag, the leaked soya milk wouldn't have done so much damage, the repair guy told me. He couldn't save it; well, new motherboard, new power supply, new screen...expensive not worth it. I'd been thinking I needed an upgrade anyway, so I decided to embrace the moment, and look into getting a new machine. It's taken me till now to sort that out, mainly because I wasn't in a hurry. Truth be... I've had a great week not being plugged into that world. I don't have a mobile, you see....never seen much use in them...so my laptop is my portal to cyberspace. Without it, I was just floating free. It's so restful to not have that busy busy thing going on. I read lots, spent more time in the garden, played with the dog, slept more. Nice time.

It's too late in the month to do a July show now, so I'm posting an old mix/show from 2013. It was originally broadcast on Dandelion Radio. I was feeling mischievous...wanting to break the form up a bit...so instead of hosting the show in the normal way, I used a basic text-to-speech program to be the DJ. I called it 'Hare'...I can't remember why...I just like hares.

It's 2 hours long, mostly electronica, and pretty poundin' towards the end. Great for the car. Here's the link for a direct download HARE

What? Why Tarpoley? (a village in Cheshire) I often wondered that myself. Simply for comic effect, I think. Some words are just funny, for example 'wool' and 'elbow'. Socrates might say that all words containing the letter 'w' are funny. No comwent.
