Workout Wear!

Health and fitness are number one on my list of priorities. Because without good health, nothing else matters. In an effort to keep motivating myself to make it to the gym, I find adding cute workout clothes to my closet to be a great motivator. I used to scoff at the idea of making my own workout clothes. My thoughts were that they are so easily accessible, why not just buy them and be done. But the type of workout tights I love can be quite pricey, like around $100 a pop! And I thought to myself, if I can make something remotely similar to what I see in stores, I would be a happy girl. When I embarked on making my own activewear, I pondered how do I go about selecting the right kind of fabric? Luckily, we live in a wonderful time where we have access to many, many fabric retailers and we home sewists can purchase the same types and quality performance fabrics we see in ready to wear.

For this workout tank, I am using Greenstyle Cami Tank Sewing Pattern. For this pattern, the seam allowance that has been drafted into the pattern is 3/8”.

This cami tank top has a shelf bra built in and we are going to prepare that first. With right sides together, stitch the side seams of the shelf bra back to the shelf bra front.

My workout tights are the Greenstyle Lift Leggings. Dare I say these are the best fitting leggings that I have ever owned. One of the best things about being able to sew your own workout tights is that you never have to worry about them slipping down when you bend over. And when they are matched with the perfect spandex fabric, there is no slippage when you began sweating. Another amazing thing about this pattern is that it has an optional crotch gusset. I highly suggest that you use it. The reason for a crotch gusset is that not only does it preserve the longevity of your garment, but it also helps reduce the possibility of a camel toe by shifting the seams away from the area.

My performance fabric is from Joann. When selecting fabrics, you should seek out something that contains polyester, nylon, spandex and/or lycra because these fabrics will have excellent stretch and recovery. Also, look for something that is soft and not rough or scratchy. It is important that the fabric feels good against your skin. And nowadays, you can find performance fabric that is moisture wicking, which means when you sweat, the fabric dries quickly.

Quick Tips for Sewing with Performance Fabric

When preparing to sew with your activewear fabric, make sure that you prewash your fabric. This will preshrink your fabric and prevent the fabric dye from bleeding as you are wearing it. Selecting the proper needle and thread is key. As with any knit fabric, use a ball point or stretch needle. I like to use Mettler SERAFLEX® thread because it has stretch.

When working out, I've noticed that my feet have started to bother me. I've been dealing with my fallen arches due to my flat feet. So I added these amazing insoles for flat feet. They really help out in my Nike Air Max 270 trainers.

McCall's 8009 - The Perfect Night Out Romper!

Since the pandemic, I haven't been out-out. When I say out-out, I mean in really crowded places -- maskless. The July 4th weekend was my first fully-vaccinated outing. I am the consummate people watcher; I love looking at people and what they're wearing. So, I had missed being out so much and I was feeling the isolation. It felt good to make some pretty clothes for a weekend of good friends, good music, good drinks and good laughs.

I love shorts. This is the Deep South and it's always hot and humid. And in all honesty, I get it in the gym and y'all are going to see the results of 3 days a week jump squats! McCall's 8009, view A is perfect for a night out. My fabric is a poly crepe from Jo-Ann that I bought last summer.

I cut the size 14 in the bodice and the 16 from the waist to hips. I lengthened the bodice by one inch. I also lengthened 1 inch at the waist and an inch at the rise.

I made a 2 inch full seat adjustment to make sure I had enough coverage in the back. And I also added 1/2" to the crotch length. See, I have a 31" waist and a 45" hip. With ready-to-wear shorts, I have to deal with hiking up in the back and not enough length in the crotch. So, when I'm walking, it causes the shorts to ride up and gather right in between my legs. It's not comfortable or cute. So, when I learned to make these adjustments, it was life changing.

To top off my look, I love dainty 14k gold necklaces. In the last year, they've become my gold standard. See what I did there! Previously, I picked silver jewelry to match with my platinum wedding set. But since I don't have to wear that anymore, I've really leaned in on the gold jewelry and I'm loving it so much. Gold is warm and looks so much better against my skintone.

Burda 7065 -- The Crisscross Halter Dress!

This dress has been in my to-sew pile for many, many summers. I'd pull it out and put it back. I happened to run across it a few weeks ago, and I promised myself that this is the summer for it.

This is Burda 7065. I think it may be out of print. The Simplicity.com website is horrible to navigate, so I'm not bothering to try and link to it. But I will say this, you can make a top or a dress and it's probably the quickest and easiest thing I've cut out and sewn in a while.

There are only 2 pattern pieces, the front and the back. I cut the size 16 and made a swayback adjustment and a full seat adjustment. I added 5" to the length because I wanted a midi length.

My fabric is orange Double Weave Heavy Laguna from Zelouf Fabrics.

I rarely sew Burda patterns, so I don't know if this is common. But one thing about this pattern that stood out to me is how roomy it is in the bust and how "snatched" it is in the waist. I guess European women have big boobs and tiny waists.

I cut my elastic 2" shorter than suggested because I wanted to make sure it held the bodice snug.

I absolutely love this dress and I can't believe it took me years to make it. But, better late than never!

Feeling Blue!

This is what I wore for Mother's Day, and I'm just now getting around to posting it.

I love adding separates to my wardrobe. I can't say that enough. I wear the clothes that I sew. This ain't for "show". I'm not here to entertain you. This is real life and my real wardrobe. That's why I love these 2 pieces.

This top is McCall's 8217. And my fabric is Stella Trans Lurex Knit in Sky Allure from Zelouf Fabrics.com.

This is such a cute top that is so easy to sew straight out of the envelope... no alterations necessary for me. And this beautiful knit fabric, gave it the perfect amount of razzle and dazzle! It's pretty sheer, but a nude bra underneath was the perfect coverage. And the fabric was really easy to sew. But hey, everything is easy to sew on my beautiful Janome Memory Craft 15000 while using my walking foot!

My skirt is McCall's 8149. And my fabric is Anning Space Dye Suiting in Denim from Zelouf Fabrics.com. This fabric looks like denim, but it's not. It's 70% poly, 28% rayon and 2% spandex.

I made my usual alteration which is a full seat. I didn't need to lengthen it because it's drafted to be a midi length. I sewed and topstitched just as a would had the fabric been actual denim.

I love this skirt and I've already worn it out into the wild twice since I mad it. I can't wait to rotate it right into fall with boots!

Linen 2-Piece Outfit!

What is spring and summer without a great linen look? It's even better when it's a matching set, that works together or as separates in your wardrobe!

I'd recently acquired this beautiful cut of linen from Zelouf Fabrics. It's the Rebecca Stripe Linen in Ivory. The fabric is so subtle... it just makes perfect sense to use it for a design that has some flair to it. I thought I would be making a jacket and pants. But after I pre-washed my fabric and all of the sizing was removed, the linen was so soft that I knew it would make a great top.

My top is Vogue Patterns 1700. It's a perfect replica of the Rosie Assoulin Lantern Sleeve Top.

The top retails for $795. I'd had this saved on Pinterest for a while... so I was glad when it was released by Vogue Patterns last year.

This top is pretty simple to sew and it has really cute designer-esque details. I cut a 14 and graded out to the 16. The bodice is really roomy, so I didn't need to do a FBA.

One of the main draws to this pattern is how it's designed to allow you to play with the stripe placement.

The bodice is lined. I used a lining fabric from my stash.

When this pattern was first released and posted to the McCall's social media accounts, there were comments like: "Who's going to wear that?"; "I can't wear a neckline that low. That's too much boobage!"; "I don't like it. The sleeves are silly and impractical." Insert eyeroll! You don't have to buy and make every pattern that is released. Everything isn't for everyone. And you're sewing the garment. Make necessary changes to suit you! Like, I sewed up the bodice to a level that I was comfortable with. The sleeves were extremely long. If I'm telling you a sleeve is long, it's long AF!

I took one inch off of the lower sleeve and I also took an inch off of the length of the sleeve cuffs. It was also too wide for my liking. So I reduced the width by 3 inches. It's not a real sleeve cuff that's interfaced and whatnot. It's just a "faux cuff" with a hem.

My shorts are the Closet Core Patterns Pietra Shorts. And they're my new favorite summer item. If you'd asked me a couple of weeks ago how I felt about pants with elastic waistbands? I would've given them 2 thumbs down! But I liked the way the front of these are drafted and I knew my top would be long enough to cover the top of them if I hated the back waist, so I went for it. And I love them!

One of the things I used to hate about RTW shorts is how they would ride up on the inside of my thighs and make the crotch are look horrible when I'm walking. Once I learned to do a full-seat adjustment and to lengthened the crotch curve, my life was changed. As long as I've been sewing and engaging the online sewing community, I rarely see women that look like me with similar body types making pants fit adjustments. Pants get such a bad rap when it comes to fitting, because there simply isn't the RIGHT information out here to help women with curves properly fit. I've read A LOT of fit books over the years and through trial and error, I've learned to make the adjustments that I need.

I love both of these pieces, and I can assure you that these will be highly rotated through the spring and summer!

How to Build the Ultimate Skin Care Wardrobe

Chances are that your fashion wardrobe contains a mix of both daily essentials and special occasion outfits, along with a selection of accessories that you can mix and match with whichever clothing items you pull.

This dress is McCall's 8175, #VanessaMcCalls. I cut view A/B.

My fabric is ZS1311P Print Scuba in Navy/Merlot from Zelouf Fabrics. I love the colors of this fabric and I love the drape.

The first alteration I knew I had to make was a full bust adjustment. I don't like when a bodice like this has no shaping, so I added darts.

This is what my FBA looks like.

I'd typically have to do a sway back adjustment. But since the back is open, There were other ways to refine the fit. I had to take the skirt in at the sides to make sure it sat at the natural waist. And I the bodice didn't fit as close to the body as I liked, so I added elastic to the edge.

This was an afterthought alteration. It's not the neatest... but it was so necessary for a good fit on me. And the bodice is fully-lined.

I love this dress so much. The vibrant colors make me feel so happy and I know I'll enjoy wearing it.

Simplicity 9010!

This is a dress that I've had laying around to sew for months. It was so easy and quick, I don't know what took me so long.

The pattern is Simplicity 9010 and I made view C. I cut a size 16 and made my normal alterations and adjustments.

I made a one inch sway back adjustment; 2" full seat adjustment and I added 3" of length.

I constructed the dress with French seams and narrow hems instead of bias binding.

I like the version with the ties. It makes for a perfect day dress. You can actually be comfortable moving around and doing daily things while wear it without fear of having it slide off your shoulders. And I tacked the back where the centers meet. It's perfectly bra-friendly.

This dress is so cute and I just love it. I hope I get around to making at least another color. This one will no doubt be a spring/summer staple.

Minimal! Rib Knit Maxi Dress!

As much as I like fancy, heavy-duty fashionable piece, I love minimal everyday pieces. A true stylish wardrobe consist of pieces that work in every aspect of your lifestyle. This includes "throw-on-and-go" dresses that work with a variety of shoes and outerwear toppers. And this dress fits that bill. This is season is all about clingy, stretch, second-skin dressing. After a year of being in pajamas and yoga pants, I think most of us want something with the same effect, but a little more on the polished side.

The dress is New Look 6210. And the fabric is Kristen Cut Sew Sweater Knit from Zelouf Fabrics in ivory.

First things first, the adjustments. I cut the size 16 and made my standard 1" FBA.

Pardon my wrinkles... sometimes I sit. I also made 1" swayback adjustment and a 2" full seat adjustment. A center back seam is the miracle that makes all of this possible.

I sewed this using my walking foot on my Janome Horizon Memory Craft 15000. I set my stitch to zig zag 1.5mm wide x 2.5mm long. I used a ballpoint needle. And I finished my seams with my Janome AirThread 2000D Serger.

Since I'm probably taller than the average pattern model, I decided to raise my side slit by 2".

I finished the slit hems with a 5/8" hem. And I hemmed the garment at 1.5".

I love this dress so much. It's such a quick and easy sew that I see myself wearing multiple versions of this dress for the rest of hot weather season.

Champagne Lurex Suit!

I'm having an absolute blast with my new relationship with Zelouf Fabrics! I love having the opportunity to work with fabrics I've never seen before and being able to stretch my creativity.

This fabric is Lexi Lurex Mesh Bonded Knit. I used the Champagne color. That particular color only has a few yards left, but there are other wonderful colors to choose from.

When I ordered this fabric, I knew I wanted to make a suit... it just screamed suit to me. Vogue 1716 was my original choice. But I wasn't sure how well this fabric would tailor and that jacket has welt pockets with flaps.

I reached way back in my stash and pulled Butterick 5428 (it's long out of print). I've been wanting to make that jacket for years.

I lengthened this jacket by 7" at the waist and just added width to the bottom. I hated where the jacket would've hit had I not made that alteration.

Longer jackets just look better on me instead of one that sits right on top of the hips.

I interfaced the under collar and the facings. Normally, I would interface the entire body of a jacket with a lightweight interfacing. But I wanted this jacket to feel more drapey and I really wanted to play off of the beautiful pleated detail.

I love a jacket that has back princess seams. Makes altering so easy. I made my usual swayback adjustment. The only thing I wish I had done was create a back vent. I didn't think about until I was actually at a point of trying it on.

I used extra large coat hook and eyes for my closure. On the pattern, it instructed for a bow to be made and handstitched onto the right side of the jacket at the waist. I tried it that way and it looked pretty silly. It would never hang straight and stay that way. So, I just took that piece and cut it in half and sewed it to each side of the front to just make a tie.

The jacket is fully-lined and I used a pale pink lining that I had in my stash.

I wanted a plain pair of wide legged pants, because the jacket is clearly the star of this show.

I used McCall's 7443 (currently out of print). The pants are plain front with back darts and a side zipper. I was surprised at how short they're drafted. I had to add 6" of length and I should've gone longer than that. The pattern is drafted with a 2" hem allowance. I could only do a 5/8" so that they would be long enough to wear with heels.

I think a natural reaction to a fabric like this is to make a dress or a skirt. I've been trying to be more proactive in thinking outside of my sewing box. And I'm glad I did, because I love the way this turned out.

Simplicity 9114 in Floral Embroidered Sequin!

This was such a fun dress to sew. It's one of those pieces that you can't wait to be done with because you know it's going to be so fabulous.

The pattern is Simplicity 9114 and my fabric is Aisha All Over Sequin Floral Embroidery Mesh.

This was dress was fits somewhat oversized. It was designed to be worn as duster or dress, so it has a little more ease than a normal shirt dress would. I didn't make any fit adjustments. This one worked for me straight out of the envelope.

This wasn't necessarily a difficult sew, but it was tedious because I had to take my time sewing it. It's not a zip through project. I cut everything out on a single layer. I used my walking foot and size 100/16 ball point needle.

I didn't interface the collar or the front bands. And I left the cuffs off. I lengthened the sleeves by 4 inches and added 1/2" elastic. The worst part of sewing this was gathering the tiers. I used the yarn method for that. But it felt like it took forever.

I didn't do any seam finishing. I just trimmed the seams down and I left the hem raw.
