Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson Announces North American Spoken Word Tour

Apparently quite pleased with the run of spoken word shows he hosted in his native U.K. this past summer, Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson has announced a North American spoken word tour for early 2022 that will span two and a half months and includes 10 dates in Canada.

Split into two parts, the first section of the show sees Bruce taking a humorous and often satirical look at the world from his own very personal perspective, treating the audience to private insights into his drive and ambition, peppered with plenty of Maiden anecdotes, and a myriad of other experiences encompassing not just the giddy heights but also the extreme lows, as told first-hand in his inimitable anarchic style, punctuated with photographs, videos and sometimes even erupting into song a-capella, to illustrate a point. The second section of the evening is devoted entirely to a fan question-and-answer session, with the opportunity to pose questions on any subject whatsoever.

These shows could be fun, yeah? Bruce is such an eccentric character, and it feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience to get to see him in this format. Hopefully tickets aren’t too expensive.

Sammy Hagar Says He Has “No Problem” With David Lee Roth; Sammy Hagar Throws Shade at David Lee Roth

Well, here’s a fun quote to try and wrap your head around.

Sammy Hagar has gone out of his way to clarify that he has no beef with David Lee Roth, his predecessor and successor in Van Halen (multiple times — let it never be said that this band wanted for drama)… while simultaneously insulting Roth.

Speaking to Las Vegas radio station 96.3 KKLZ, Hagar said:

“[Roth] and I don’t even have a feud. To be honest with you, I have no problem with Dave. I don’t know what he’s got going with me, but I think he always feels competitive. I think he feels like he has to raise his flag, like, ‘I’m Van Halen.’ ‘Cause I had a solo career before Van Halen. I was in Montrose before Van Halen. I’ve had Chickenfoot. Dave has got Van Halen, so I think he has to hold on to that kind of tight. But I don’t care about that. If someone said, ‘Oh, I never knew you [were] in Van Halen,’ I’d say, ‘Eh…'”

So, basically, what Hagar said is, “I have no beef with Dave because I’ve had a great career but he has beef with me because Van Halen is all he’s ever had.” Cool cool cool.

Thing is, Hagar’s assertion isn’t even accurate. Roth’s outsized personality made him a cautionary tale for Lead Singer’s Disease leading to an ultimately-unsuccessful solo career, but Roth actually was very successful for a time. DLR’s first three solo albums — Eat ‘Em and Smile (1986), Skyscraper (1988), and A Little Ain’t Enough (1991), all cracked the top twenty of the Billboard 200 chart. And that was in the late 80s and early 90s, when people still bought music. So it’s simply not true to say he never had any success outside of Van Halen.

(Also… Chickenfoot? Really, bruh???)

So why did Sammy say what he said? Well…

I’m guessing that whether he wants to admit it or not, Hagar is grumpy about the fact that to this day, David Lee Roth is generally considered the superior Van Halen frontman despite the fact that the band infamously sold more records with Hagar.

He might also feel touchy because, yeah, he had a career before and after Van Halen, but Van Halen remains his most famous and commercially-successful endeavor (Montrose’s eponymous 1973 album went platinum, but none of their other records did; every Van Hagar album went platinum multiple times), and the thing about which people still ask him constantly (case in point — this very interview).

So on some level, he must know that history will likely remember him as second banana to Diamond Dave. It’s easy to see why that would bug him.

Hypocrisy’s Peter Tägtgren Supports Right-Wing Radio Host Dan Bongino in Fight Against Vaccine Mandates

Remember last month when Hypocrisy, the band led by Swedish death metal royalty Peter Tägtgren, released a new single — their first in eight years — the lyrics of which seemed suspiciously anti-vax? True, “Chemical Whore” could’ve been written years before we ever knew what Covid-19 was, and true, the song’s lyrics were general enough that they could’ve referred to any number of grave horrors the pharmaceutical industry has perpetrated on the masses (which, to be clear, there have been many). Still, the timing and context were suspicious, as MS co-founder Axl Rosenberg noted in his writeup of the track.

Another day another dollar, as once again my cynical old pal Axl was correct.

The revelation comes via a comment Tägtgren left on a Facebook post by popular conservative radio host Dan Bongino, who has been placed on leave from his usual role over vaccine mandates imposed by his employer, the radio behemoth Cumulus Media. Bongino, whose show is syndicated to over 300 radio stations during the mid-day time slot previously occupied by the late Rush Limbaugh, is a former secret service agent who built a large social media following in right-wing circles as a pundit on Fox News, NRA TV and InfoWars, among others. Given all of that it’s not surprising that he’d be taking an anti-vax stance, but the thrice unsuccessful congressional candidate, who is battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma, is himself fully vaccinated. It’s the mandates he’s against. Because, you know, one individual’s selfish decision not to get vaccinated has no repercussion whatsoever on anyone else! Yeah, that’s it.

Which is where Tägtgren comes into the picture. Commenting on a photo Bongino posted this weekend from a football game, Tägtgren first said “Keep on Rocking in the free world” with the metal horns and beer emojis, a co-option of the classic Neil Young lyric presumably meant to support an individual’s “freedom” to choose to take a vaccine or not. Later, replying to responses to his initial comment, he added:

“I’m not here to debate, I’m here to support..
“It’s not my country but it’s close to my heart and I support Dan Bongino with his options..
“Woooops.. there goes my working visa for next tour
“Maybe it’s worth it”

I’m not fully up on the latest visa application hoops artists need to jump through to tour the U.S., but I’d wager it’s not Tägtgren’s visa that’s in jeopardy: he may not even be allowed into the country without proof of vaccination, and even if he were, a number of cities and venues won’t allow him to play anyway. Those policies don’t appear likely to change anytime soon. Presumably Tägtgren is half-joking on that point… but it’s his support of Bongino, whose Facebook wall in recent days is full of dozens of posts supporting former president Donald Trump and blasting current president Joe Biden, that’s the most troubling to me personally, and I’d venture countless others. What’s truly at stake, then, is not visas, but Tägtgren’s very fanbase. It’s unfortunate, to be sure, and I certainly won’t be viewing Hypocrisy in the same light as I did previously (gtfo with your “cancel culture” BS… no one is “cancelling” Hypocrisy. They’ll be around for years to come, I’m sure, independent of my support).

Great news for anyone who bummed by the complete lack of Zakk Wylde on Ozzy Osbourne’s last album, Ordinary Man: Ozzy himself has allegedly confirmed that Wylde will appear on every song on his next offering.

The Prince of Darkness told the Diary of Madman podcast that Wylde “was home from tour this time unlike when I did ‘Ordinary Man.'”

This news will surely warm the cockles of every Ozzy’s fan heart… especially given that these days, every Ozzy albums seems like it could be his last.

Ozzy’s new album is once against being produced by Andrew Watts (Post Malone), who was also at the helm for Ordinary Man. There are reportedly fifteen songs already recorded. The album will include Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters) on drums and Robert Trujillo (Metallica) on bass. In addition to Wylde, guitarists set to appear on the record include Ozzy’s former Black Sabbath bandmate, Tony Iommi, iconic guitarist Jeff Beck, and iconic guitarist/total dipshit Eric Clapton.

No word on a release date yet.

Track Premiere: Solar Cross, “The Ever-Unfolding” (ex-Omnium Gatherum)

Finnish progressive death metal trio Solar Cross will release their debut album, Echoes Of The Eternal Word, on November 19 via Transcending Records, and today MetalSucks is pleased to unveil its latest single, “The Ever-Unfolding.”

Formed by brothers Harri, Jarmo and Lauri Pikka (Harri and Jarmo both served for over a decade in Omnium Gatherum), Solar Cross offer a form of death metal that in some ways harks back to their old band, and in others has absolutely nothing to do with it. The album’s debut single, “Bloodstreams,” which arrived last month, mixed the former’s plodding melodic death/doom sound with thrash, while today’s track steps out of that box entirely. “The Ever-Unfolding” is as much classic rock as it is black metal and doom, a mix that looks odd on paper but wholly works when you hear it with your own ears. We can confidently say that no other band sounds quite like this at the moment.

Lyricist (but not vocalist!) Matti Rautaniemi comments:

“The Ever-Unfolding deals with the idea that the whole cosmos is a living thing and that we are all parts of this massive cosmic organism. Despite all its numerous benefits, our modern technological and scientific worldview easily makes us think that we are just sacks of meat living on a dead rock in space. However, we have the choice to shift our perception and treat this existence not as a fixed thing, but as an ever-unfolding process in which we participate as co-creators. This song aims to remind the listener of the this idea, which can be found in many traditional cultures and esoteric philosophies.”

“Harridan” heralds the release of Porcupine Tree’s long awaited 11th studio album, Closure / Continuation, due via Music For Nations/Megaforce Records on Friday, June 24, 2022. Pre-orders are available now.

Comments the band:

“‘Harridan’ and a few of the other new songs have been in play since shortly after the release of The Incident. They initially lived on a hard drive in a slowly growing computer file marked PT2012, later renamed PT2015, PT2018, and so on. There were times when we even forgot they were there, and times when they nagged us to finish them to see where they would take us. Listening to the finished pieces, it was clear that this wasn’t like any of our work outside of the band – the combined DNA of the people behind the music meant these tracks were forming what was undeniably, unmistakably, obviously a Porcupine Tree record. You’ll hear all of that DNA flowing right through ‘Harridan.’”

Porcupine Tree – Steven Wilson, Richard Barbieri, and Gavin Harrison – will celebrate their long overdue return with a wide-ranging world tour, set to hit North America next fall. The band recently unveiled a series of European and UK live shows – their first since October 2010 – getting underway October 21, 2022 in Berlin, Germany and then culminating at London’s world famous SSE Arena, Wembley on November 11.

David Ellefson Asked Megadeth to Leave His Bass Tracks on Their New Album

David Ellefson has revealed that he asked Megadeth not to re-record his tracks for their upcoming album with a different bassist.

The Metal Voice recently asked Ellefson about being replaced on the forthcoming The Sick, the Dying, and the Dead, for which his parts were already completed when the band fired him earlier this year. Ellefson replied:

“They did what they did. I don’t think they had to do that. I asked them not to. But they did what they did. It’s the path they chose.”

Ellefson also didn’t close the door on ~~being in a band that makes money again~~ reconciling with Megadeth in the future:

“Look, I don’t have — believe it or not; people might find this hard to believe — I don’t have any ill will toward [Dave Mustaine] or [the other current members of Megadeth]. I really don’t.”

Ellefson was, of course, fired amidst a sex scandal. But in the statement announcing Ellefson’s dismissal, Megadeth said that the bassist had “an already strained relationship” with the band prior to his dismissal. A couple of months later, Mustaine asserted that there’s “no chance” of Ellefson ever re-reuniting with the group. Point being, it seems as though Ellefson’s public embarrassment was the straw that broke the camel’s back, and not the sole cause of his firing. Assuming this was the case, Mustaine was probably overjoyed to be able to re-record Ellefson’s parts.

Megadeth replaced Ellefson for their recent tour with James LoMenzo (White Lion, Black Label Society, Firstborne, etc.), who was previously in the band from 2006 until 2010. It’s currently unclear whether his tracks for the new album were re-recorded by LoMenzo or someone else.

The Sick, the Dying, and the Dead does not yet have a release date.

Ellefson’s new band, The Lucid, recently released their self-titled debut via SpoilerHead Records. In addition to Ellefson, the band includes vocalist Vinnie Dombroski (Sponge), guitarist Drew Fortier (Zen From Mars), and drummer Mike Heller (Fear Factory).

Machine Head and Amon Amarth have both stayed off the road of late despite many bands returning to touring life in some parts of the world. But both bands’ comebacks will be massive, and they’re doing it together: a co-headline tour of the U.K. and Europe that will play in arenas.

For Machine Head, in particular, the announcement is notable: the band has toured exclusively in an “evening with” format with no other bands for nearly ten years.

But for both, the team-up is a momentous occasion that will see them headline some of the biggest venues of their careers.

Two of the biggest bands in metal will be joined by a brand new act, The Halo Effect, whose existence was just revealed last week. This tour is a helluva way to kick off their career, although the personnel are hardly green: all five of them are former members of In Flames and collectively have a ton of experience under their belts.

Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn comments:

Gary Holt Agrees with Kerry King That Slayer “Quit Too Early”

The inevitable backslide from “retirement” into active gigging began for Slayer last month, when guitarist Kerry King remarked that “we quit too early. Fuck us. Fuck me. I hate fucking not playing.” The quote came, of all places, in a 30th birthday video message to Machine Head, not even as a response to an interviewer or something.

Now King’s bandmate of nine years, Gary Holt, has chimed in to say he agrees with his former employer. And while Holt still has Exodus to keep him active forevermore, we wouldn’t blame him for missing the adrenaline rush of those massive Slayer audiences.

Speaking to Metal Hammer, who asked Holt directly about King’s comments, he said:

“I’d have to agree. We were still playing at the top of our game, we were totally killing it. The band had a lot of years left in it, but I guess when it’s time, it’s time. When you decide to walk away from something, walk away. I can’t tell anybody they made the wrong decision. Better to go out on top than go out unable to play your own songs, and this shit isn’t easy. Playing ‘Angel Of Death’ at 70 years old would be fucking hard. But it was time for me to come back [to Exodus], let’s put it that way. I was really missing my first family.”

Rumor has it that Tom Araya was the Slayer-er most set on retiring. With that in mind, it makes sense King would miss the stage. As for Holt, he was a hired gun, it wasn’t his call, but as long as Slayer kept payin’, he’d keep playin’.

Meanwhile, King has been teasing a new project that also involves Holt and former Testament/Exodus drummer Paul Bostaph (a member of Slayer’s final lineup). The group is heavily rumored to also include ex-Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo. King recently said he’s eyeing late 2022 for an official release from that project.

Once Human, who feature in their ranks former Machine Head guitarist Logan Mader, wrapped up their tour with Cradle of Filth and 3Teeth last Tuesday, October 26 in the Bay Area. And they invited a very special local up on stage them: Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn!

Hyping up the crowd for the first time in over a year and a half, Flynn, who is usually anchored by a guitar but had full freedom of movement with just a microphone, traded verses on the band’s classic track “Davidian” with Once Human frontwoman Lauren Hart. The audience — or least those who showed up early to catch Once Human — ate it up.

Mader participated in Machine Head’s 25th anniversary tour of Burn My Eyes in early 2020, but Once Human remains his primary musical endeavor.

Marilyn Manson Leads Prayer Circle With Kanye West and Justin Bieber

Embattled shock rocker Marilyn Manson once again appeared on stage with rapper Kanye West this weekend… and one point appeared to lead both West and pop star Justin Bieber in a prayer circle (photos below).

According to The PRP, the appearance was part of West’s Sunday Service performance on Halloween. These “events often promote a Christian-leaning gospel and ministry experience.”

That seems like an odd place for the author of Antichrist Superstar to make an appearance — and it’s made all the stranger by Bieber’s presence. Manson and Bieber have boomeranged between mutual admiration, beef, and mutual admiration again several times over the past few years.

Manson’s appearance at this event — and the fact that he seemed to be praying with West and Bieber at one point — naturally begs the question… Has Marilyn Manson found God?

On the one hand, that seems like SUCH a stretch, given how much of Manson’s career is built on anti-Christian sentiment.

On the other hand, neither West nor Bieber are known for their sense of irony, and both seem to be earnestly religious. In my experience, people who are way into Jesus don’t take kindly to making light of their faith — so at the very least, I would imagine, Manson is presenting himself as born again to Bieber and West.

Maybe this is Manson’s master plan to try and un-cancel himself. As you’re likely aware, he’s spent most of this year being sued by a plethora of former girlfriends who all say he was physically and psychologically abusive towards them; at least one ex claims he’s guilty of sex trafficking. The Christian Right has been only too-happy to look the other way when guys like Donald Trump and Roy Moore turn out to be sex criminals, so they’d probably welcome Manson with open arms, too.

Assuming this is the case, Manson would join Blackie Lawless from W.A.S.P. as the most famous metal musician who can no longer perform his most famous song (in Manson’s case, “The Beautiful People,” which includes the lyric “It’s all relative to the size of your steeple”). There would also be a ton of other Manson songs he’d no longer be able to perform… in fact, I don’t know what the rules about this kind of thing are, but the album art from Holy Wood alone might make that album off-limits now.

I guess we’ll see where this goes.

A flood of charges against Manson began in February, when actress Evan Rachel Wood alleged that Manson “horrifically abused me for years.” She elaborated on those accusations a week later, at which point she also said that Manson’s wife, Lindsay Usich, and someone named Leslee Lane were “conspiring to release photos of me when I was UNDERAGE, after being given large amounts of drugs and alcohol, after Brian performed on Halloween in Las Vegas, to ‘ruin my career’ and ‘shut me up.’”

Manson is currently being sued by three ex-girlfriends — Game of Thrones actress Esmé Bianco, actress Ashley Morgan Smithline and a woman identified only as “Jane Doe” — as well as a former assistant, Ashley Walters, for several charges related to sexual assault and physical and emotional abuse. Manson has denied all of the charges, claiming he is the victim of a conspiracy. He has been dropped by his label, Loma Vista, his agency, CAA, and his manager of 25 years, Tony Ciulla. He was also fired from television roles on the programs American Gods and Creepshow.

Two former Manson collaborators, Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland and Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor, have both spoken out against the shock rocker. Borland called Manson “a bad fucking guy” and asserted that his victims “are speaking the truth,” while Reznor said that he has “been vocal over the years about my dislike of Manson as a person and cut ties with him nearly 25 years ago.” He also denied, not for the first time, a story from Manson’s memoir, The Long Hard Road Out of Hell, in which the singer claims that he and Reznor plied two women with alcohol and then took advantage of them once they were heavily inebriated.

Manson first appeared with Kanye at an event in August, which also included DaBaby, the rapper who recently faced backlash over homophobic comments he made earlier this year.

Former Death Manager Eric Grief Has Died

Eric Grief, an entertainment lawyer and manager best known for his work with Death, has passed away. He battled diabetes for most of his life and was in search of a kidney donor in recent months.

Eric was responsible for the continued legacy of Death as well as late frontman Chuck Schuldiner, who died in 2001. He spearheaded a number of reissue and merch initiatives in recent years as well as the Death to All tours that saw an all-star cast of musicians, including many ex members of the band, pay tribute to Death in the live setting.

MetalSucks had the pleasure of working with Grief on a number of occasions over the years. Those interactions and projects were always smooth sailing, and we found Eric to be courteous, kind and thoughtful.

The news broke on Saturday, October 30, via Death’s social media:

“The world has lost an absolute warrior and proponent for metal and music in general. Eric was first introduced into my life as a child when he was chucks manager and friend then later on in my late twenties when we met in Philadelphia to strike up a deal with relapse records to finally give chucks legacy a proper home. All of you are enjoying chucks music on all of these wonderful platforms and releases now because of this man. Eric was average in physical stature but once he opened his mouth there was no doubt he was a giant. He was a loving father and one of the most articulate and interesting men I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. Please keep his mother and children in your thoughts. The art of existence is fragile indeed…..

Ghost Frontman Explains New Album Concept

Ghost returned to the spotlight in September with a new song, “Hunter’s Moon” — from the soundtrack for the film Halloween Kills — and a freshly announced tour with Volbeat. Fans will need to wait a bit longer for a full-length Ghost album, but that can’t be far off seeing as frontman Tobias Forge said the band planned to be in the studio in late 2020 and on into early 2021.

But we won’t have to wait that long to find out about the concept behind Ghost’s next record, as Forge has just spilled the beans. As usual, it’s well thought-out, heady, and a bit nihilistic.

In a chat with radio station KLAQ, Forge explained that the album is about the fall of empires. Hmmm… poignant much? He said:

“The album that I have been working on, I came up with that concept years ago. We played in Seattle in 2013, 2014 — something like that — we played at Showbox At The Market.
“I remember that day I came up with the idea for this record, this upcoming record. Because I got a book called ‘The Rule Of Empires’. So, basically, I wanted to make a record about the rise and ultimately the unescapable fails and falls of empires. And an idea like that can take — at least me — quite far.
“So once you get that idea of, like, ‘Oh, now I know what the pile is gonna look like. I know now what not to put in there.’ And it was the same thing with ‘Prequelle’; it was gonna be about the great death, a medieval, primordial threat of annihilation which was, I guess I wouldn’t say carnal but maybe a tiny tad more spiritual and philosophical death, with the ever presence of actual termination, whereas this record about the empires was gonna be a little bit more practical, I guess; a little bit more, I don’t wanna say political. So it wasn’t really hard to be inspired by the last couple of years.”

Listen to Limp Bizkit’s New Album, Still Sucks

Nu-metal icons/whipping boys Limp Bizkit have made good on their threat to release their new album, Still Sucks, on Halloween.

After teasing as much a few days prior, the band announced on Friday, October 29, that Still Sucks would arrive two days later. The band officially announced the album via an Instagram video in which guitarist Wes Borland plays a music vlogger named ‘Jake Bacon.’

In June, Borland said that the long-teased new record, which for years had a tentative title of Stampede of the Disco Elephants, had not yet been released because the music didn’t hold up to frontman Fred Durst’s lofty standards.

The band previously played a new song called “Dad Vibes” to a live audience in August and then released it a month later.

Still Sucks is Limp Bizkit’s first album since 2011’s Gold Cobra.

King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and his wife, the actress and singer Toyah Willcox, have unveiled the latest entry in their “Sunday Lunch” series of cover videos that have captured the Internet’s attention in recent months.

The duo’s new video finds them covering Talking Heads’ 1977 classic “Psycho Killer” with some spooky additions for Halloween. The clip continues with the couple’s recent format switch, but this time it’s Toyah singing and dancing while Robert watches, sung to a track instead of live guitar.

Crown the Empire Release New Song + Music Video, “Dancing With the Dead”

Genre-bending, modern metallers, Crown the Empire, have released their heaviest track to date. The song, titled “Dancing With the Dead,” is the band’s first that features no clean vocals and instead features a furious, guttural exchange between vocalist Andy Leo and bassist/vocalist Hayden Tree. Accompanying the new track is a darkly cinematic music video, featuring a real life chess board where protagonist (Andy), has to physically overpower the seven deadly sins, to overthrow the clutches of the evil King (Hayden). Speaking on their brutal new track, Andy Leo shares:

“’Dancing with the Dead’ came about during the rock bottom phase of quarantine. I’d felt like my purpose had been taken, and I had fully melded into the idea of just letting myself rot. I thought that rock bottom had a definite end but it felt as if I could go as low as I’d let myself. There’s a mural of heaven we put up that covers my entire living room wall and I was thinking about the book Paradise Lost where Lucifer said something like ‘I’d rather rule in hell than serve in heaven’” and knew that if I was doomed to be stuck in this loop then I may as well make the most of it. I was chasing after an idea of salvation that I could do nothing to reach so I decided to start building myself outward to make myself the king of the shit hole I had put myself in.”

Hayden Tree adds:

“This is the heaviest song we’ve released to date. I remember sitting down and thinking to myself that as a band, we’ve never released a song with zero singing in it. As a musician in the rock world you can sometimes feel like you have to play it safe. These days artists seem to be fearful of stepping out of their comfort zone and doing something other than their norm or what’s trending. I didn’t want to play it safe anymore. At this point I was listening to a lot of hardcore/metal bands I grew up on which shaped the riff and energy on the track. I remember showing the song to the band and instantly Brandon thought it was too heavy and didn’t feel that it could make it onto an album. I fought him on it because I believed this song could be something special. He finally came around and helped me and Andy write all the lyrics. Once we finished the track, it turned into one of our band’s favorite and craziest songs we’ve ever released.”

Crown the Empire will be hitting the road as special guests (along with Tetrarch) for Atreyu on their “Baptize Tour.” Kicking off in Dallas, Texas on November 9th, the tour will continue through 26 further US cities, culminating in Santa Ana, California on December 16th. The band will also be playing a one-off Los Angeles show – “The Battle of Los Angeles” with Volumes and Slay Squad on December 19th at 1720.

The Halo Effect: New Band Reunites Five Former Members of In Flames

In an announcement sure to pique fan curiosity, five former members of In Flames have teamed up to launch a new band, The Halo Effect. Specifically…

Mikael Stanne (vocals)
Jesper Strömblad (guitar)
Niclas Engelin (guitar)
Peter Iwers (bass)
Daniel Svensson (drums)

Stanne was only a member of In Flames for a brief time in the early ’90s. He appears on their album Lunar Strain, and went on, of course, to front Dark Tranquillity, a band of which he is still a member today.

Strömblad left in In Flames in 2010, and appears on all of their releases up to and including 2008’s A Sense of Purpose. He has been openly critical of In Flames since leaving the band, calling it “a sinking ship” and suggesting that the remaining members should change the name given their new creative direction and how few founding members are left in the line-up.

Iwers left In Flames in 2016 after nearly two decades with the group to “pursue other endeavors.” He started a new band, Cyhra, with Strömblad the following year.

Svensson left In Flames in 2015 after 17 years “to take care and spend more time with the most important people in my life – my wife and my three daughters.”

Engelin, meanwhile, replaced Strömblad in In Flames… but has been sitting out touring with the band since 2019 “due to strong medical advisement.” Chris Broderick (ex-Megadeth, Act of Defiance) has been filling in ever since. It’s not clear if Engelin will ever return to In Flames or not.

As of this writing, The Halo Effect have released a promo photo (above), but no new music yet.

Sabaton Strike a “Christmas Truce” on World War I-themed New Song

Sabaton wrote a song about war history? Ya don’t say!

The band’s latest, “Christmas Truce,” tells the story of a most unlikely temporary alliance between bitter enemies forged on the warfield in the name of Christmas. Press copy explains:

“December 24, 1914: Late on Christmas Eve, British Expeditionary Force heard German troops in the trenches opposite them singing Christmas carols and saw lanterns and small fir trees along their trenches. Messages began to be shouted between the trenches. The following day, British and German soldiers met in no man’s land and exchanged gifts, took pictures and some even played football. It was a rare but magic moment of peace and harmony in the midst of one of the most atrocious events of the 20th century.”

Bassist and band leader Par Sundström explains:

“‘Christmas Truce’ was our highest priority when we decided to write songs about World War One. Not only was it the most requested topic from our fans, but it was, for us, the most emotional story from the war. This song took us years to create since we wanted the music to reflect the mood honesty, and it was a big challenge; but we feel we managed to write a song that captures the spirit of that day, over a century ago.”

“Christmas Truce” will appear on Sabaton’s World War I-themed tenth studio album, The War To End All Wars, coming out on March 4, 2022.

Enterprise Earth Share New Song/Video, “Reanimate // Disintegrate”

Enterprise Earth have unveiled “Reanimate // Disintegrate,” the second single from their forthcoming album, The Chosen.

Guitarist Gabe Mangold explains:

“We’re very excited to unveil the second single and video ‘Reanimate // Disintegrate.’ This track features another sonic mood and feeling from the album that I think fans new and old will enjoy. The accompanying music video, done by King Wolf Creative, is also our favorite to date.”

Volumes Share Video for Title Track From New Album Happier?

Volumes have released the title track from their forthcoming album, Happier?.

Says the band of the song:

“‘Happier?’ is about how you watch someone destroy themselves and ultimately end up in a darker, negative space and feeling like your hands are tied. It’s about feeling helpless to the fact that you once knew someone completely different then the person who is standing in front of you.”

Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy Kilmister Reunited in Animated Video for “Hellraiser”

For obvious reasons, it’s not possible for Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy Kilmister to film a music video today. So for the clip to promote “Hellraiser,” the 1991 Ozzy/Motörhead song that was recently re-released as a(n artificial) duet between the two, they went animated.

Maybe you think that’s a letdown, but the video is quite cool, and definitely allows them to go much bigger and more fantastical than they could have with live action. For example, Animated Ozzy can jump around and fight zombies with a laser sword, whereas Real Ozzy can barely walk from one side of the stage to the other.

The original Ozzy recording of the song appeared on No More Tears in 1991; the Motörhead iteration followed on March or Die a year later. This new amalgamation, which grafts some of Lemmy’s vocals onto the Ozzy version of the song, comes from the No More Tears thirtieth anniversary super-duper-deluxe extra-special reissue. That’s out now.

Ozzy is currently working on a follow-up to last year’s Ordinary Man with that record’s producer, Andrew Watt. It will once again feature Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) on drums, as well as drummer Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters) and bassist Robert Trujillo (Metallica). Longtime Ozzy collaborator and sideman Zakk Wylde will also participate in some capacity (he did not appear on Ordinary Man at all), as will Ozzy’s former Black Sabbath bandmate, Tony Iommi, iconic guitarist Jeff Beck and iconic guitarist/total dipshit Eric Clapton.

Avatar Post New Song and Announce Rescheduled U.S. Tour Dates

Avatar may have had to end their fall U.S. tour early when frontman Johannes Eckerström tested positive for Covid-19, but there’s a silver lining for Avatar fans who missed out: not only has the band announced rescheduled dates, but they’ve released a brand new song, “So Sang the Hollow.”

Eckerström comments of the band’s newly released somber tune:

“I think the song fits the season. ‘So Sang The Hollow‘ lives between a dream and our waking nightmares. It’s like a seance with ghosts of your own creation. It’s one of those songs that was a very long time in the making, with the main guitar part having been kicked around since I entered the workforce. It also answers the question what Simon And Garfunkel would’ve sounded like if they grew up listening to Black Sabbath.”

In an announcement revealing the Covid-19 diagnosis, the band said that Eckerström was fully vaccinated and feeling fine.

Fit for an Autopsy Unleash “Pandora”

Fit for an Autopsy’s new song, “Pandora,” is a fuckin’ banger. How much of a fuckin’ banger? It has two equally-annihilative breakdowns. TWO!

And the rest of the song is great, too. It’s not like some bands where you’re really just killing time until the breakdown(s) arrive(s). There are parts that are much more European melodeath and much less American deathcore. It’s all blended seamlessly. Like I said — the song’s a fuckin’ banger.

Comments the band:

“This is one of our favorite new songs, as it touches on a lot of our influences all at once and represents a collective of our musical tastes. Lyrically, it describes the inevitable path to environmental destruction via the mechanisms we’ve permitted to control society. It’s not an unfamiliar topic for FFAA, but an important one nonetheless and one we will continue to write about.”

Speaking about the Max Moore-directed music video, the band continues:

“[The video] paints this theme in a symbolic way, with the relationship between the characters acting as a parallel to our relationship with the earth. A world driven by extinction only ends in extinction.”

Check out “Pandora” below. The song will appear on FFAA’s new album, Oh What the Future Holds, which comes out on January 14, 2022.

Decrepit Birth’s Bill Robinson on “Extended Hiatus,” New Vocalist Announced

Good news / bad news time, my fellow Decrepit Birth fans.

The bad news is that “due to personal reasons,” the band’s distinctive frontman, Bill Robinson, “has decided to take an extended hiatus from the band.”

That could mean exactly what it says or it could mean Robinson ain’t never comin’ back and the rest of the band is just softening the blow. Given some of the word choices in the announcement — including a reference to “Robinson’s legacy” — it sounds like he may be gone for good. But Robinson is an interesting character — he lives about as off the grid as is humanly possible in the 21st century, and once told MetalSucks that he’s “homeless by choice” — and if you told me the band just literally could not reach him right now, I’d believe it.

Whether Robinson does or he doesn’t come eventually, the band already has already recruited the very talented Mac Smith (Alterbeast, Krosis, Hammer of Dawn, etc.) to step in for Robinson.

Which brings us to the good news: the band is working on a new album, and, presumably, the whole reason they’re announcing Robinson’s absence now is because they’re getting ready to release new material and tour dates. It’s been four years since their last album, Axis Mundi, which arrived SEVEN years after its predecessor, Polarity. So if the new album comes out in 2022, that’s a win as far as I’m concerned.

It’s not clear at present if Smith or Robinson provides vocals on the album, but… I kinda assume it’s Robinson? Otherwise calling his departure an “extended hiatus” is really pushing it, y’know?

And, look, if Smith is DB’s new frontman for really reals… he’ll kill it, I’m sure, and fans will get used to Robinson being gone, I’m also sure. It’s just gonna take us a sec to get used to the swap.

Says Smith in a statement:

“Having an opportunity to work with Decrepit Birth is nothing short of surreal. Before I began pursuing metal vocals as an aspiring drummer, this was the first death metal band that I ever watched and emulated. To play a role in this project over a decade later leaves me astonished beyond words. I am looking forward to many new experiences with the guys and paying tribute to the legendary Bill Robinson’s legacy.
“I’d like to give a special thanks to bassist Sean Martinez for being my strongest supporter personally this past year and being the key party that brought me into this role. He really brought me out of the worst slump in my career to this point, I owe everything to him.
“Additionally, I’d like to thank guitarist and founder Matt Sotelo for extending this opportunity and entrusting me with this position. Whether it be just for a singular tour, or more endeavors in the future, I will be forever grateful for being able to work with one of my favorite bands of all time.

On one hand, I’m trying to imagine what I would do if I were gifted an instrument I didn’t know how to play by Bob Marley’s family. I’d likely not even attempt to play it out of reverence and embarrassment.

On the other hand, I’m only an amateur musician, but I’m sure I could easily plink out something semi-intelligible on just about any instrument you put in front of me.

DJ Khaled — who is a professional musician, DJ, hype man and record producer — did no such thing when given a brand new Guild guitar by the family of the most legendary reggae artist of all time, strumming the thing violently with his full hand like a toddler in what’s got to be one of the most horrendous guitar performances ever recorded on video.

Worth considering: is this stunt a marketing ploy by Guild? The exposure this video generated for their A-20 Bob Marley Dreadnought model has been cosmic! And at only $399 each, they stand to move a ton of these low-end acoustics to fellow beginners like Khaled.

Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo Release Cover of Edgar Winter Group’s “Frankenstein”

Metallica’s Kirk Hammett (guitar) and Robert Trujillo (bass) seem to really enjoy performing covers together. I assume this is in part simply because of their love of music and in part because they have a ton of extra energy from not having a significant say in Metallica’s creative direction.

Whatever the case may be, the duo are celebrating Halloween with a cover of the Edgar Winter Group’s “Frankenstein.” James and Lars were chill enough to let them post it on the official YouTube channel for Metallica’s Blackened American Whiskey, so that was nice of them.

Not to Be Outdone by Limp Bizkit, Ulver Will Also Release a New Album on Halloween

Wouldn’t it be kinda funny if there was some long-running beef between Ulver and Limp Bizkit? I mean, there’s long-running beef between Limp Bizkit and every living thing with ears. But I mean if, like, Ulver considered Limp Bizkit their peers, and the two bands were competitive. That shit would be hilarious.

It is, of course, not the case — half of me wonders if the dudes in Ulver have ever even heard of Limp Bizkit — but I may pretend it is when Ulver release a new album, Scary Muzak, on Halloween this Sunday… which is the same day, of course, that Bizkit are dropping Still Sucks, their first new record in ten years. It’s like, gee… which one will I listen to first???

Prog reports:

“The new album is largely inspired by the band’s love of horror film director and musician John Carpenter, and came abut after Ulver performed a reimagined version of the iconic score to Carpenter’s Halloween along with a screening of the film at the newly restored 1920s cinema at Frogner in Oslo last year.”

Scary Muzak includes seven original tracks along with five covers of themes from various Carpenter-composed themes for the director’s films. Which five? I’m not entirely sure; the song titles all have been scrambled or re-imagined for the track listing. The first track, “Aleen Howl,” is presumably the Halloween theme. New Limp Bizkit Album, Still Sucks, Officially Arriving on Halloween

Looks like Halloween will actually be scary for once: audio terrorists Limp Bizkit are making good on their threat to release a new album this Sunday, October 31.

The band officially announced the album, Still Sucks, via an Instagram video in which guitarist Wes Borland plays a music vlogger named ‘Jake Bacon.’ I assume frontman Fred Durst was behind the camera, sharing all of his insights from directing eHarmony commercials and embarrassing John Travolta movies.

The video is mostly notable for having some audio samples of the record, in case you can’t wait another 48 hours for new Limp Bizkit music. Which I understand. If I was going to the electric chair in two days, I’d probably just wanna get it over with, too.

Go here to listen to the first single from Still Sucks, “Dad Vibes.” It debuted last month.

Still Sucks will be Limp Bizkit’s first album since 2011’s Gold Cobra, which sold a deeply-disturbed 27K+ copies in its first week of release. It was actually supposed to be the first of a pair, but God took pity on our souls, and the second one never materialized.

Then for a long time the band’s next offering was reportedly gonna be called Stampede of the Disco Elephants. Which I assume, given the band’s previous album titles (Chocolate Starfish…, the aforementioned Gold Cobra), is some kind of sex joke I don’t get because I’ve successfully completed the fifth grade.

It’s not clear how much of the Gold Cobra II / Disco Elephants material is on Still Sucks… although given Borland’s assertion that the long-teased new release has been repeatedly shelved because the music doesn’t hold up to Fred Durst’s lofty standards, probably not much.

Dark Connection (NB)

While not quite as immediately catchy as From Hell with Love (but what is?), this sci-fi sidetrack from the Finnish power metal powerhouses still satisfies. Their heavy reliance on big AOR melodies, catchy choruses, and, of course, a kiloton of keyboards may make them too cheesy for some. If you can make a dark connection with them, however, cyberpunk data dumps like “Hardcore” and “Moonlight Rendezvous” will insert a virus into your ear that you’ll have a hard time cleaning out.

Kayo Dot
Moss Grew On the Swords And Plowshares Alike (Prophecy)

The multi-talented Toby Driver’s main project has never been predictable, exactly, but it turns out that spending a lot of time in your parents’ house during quarantine listening to your high school music collection can influence the material you’re working on. To whit, Moss Grew on the Swords and Plowshares Alike takes a hard left turn towards 90s Gothic doom bands like Tiamat and My Dying Bride. Still experimental and still a fair amount of black metal influence but now it’s even more bummed out! Still great, though.

Lucifer
IV (Century Media)

Johanna Sadonis is just hanging out and hoping you’ll join her for another exemplary collection of throwback occult metal. While it doesn’t necessarily look comfy up there, I suggest you accept her invitation. Album number four contains their usual impeccable hooks and creepy atmosphere, sure, but nobody does it better. A lot of Sabbath, a little bit of Slayer, and a groove that just won’t stop – just in time for Halloween, no less!

Mastodon
Hushed And Grim (Reprise)

If you’ve been bitching for the last 15 years that Mastodon need to make another great album, well, here you are – two discs of absolute prime pachyderm. An impressive amalgamation of the various styles they’ve played with over the years, the songs on this epic journey feel distinctive and provide an overview of everything they’ve accomplished. This has some of the heaviest stuff they’ve ever recorded and some of the quietest, and it all flows together beautifully. Even if you’ve been disappointed by their last few albums, don’t miss this one.

Monolord
Your Time to Shine (Relapse)

I hope that bunny rabbit is just sleeping but based on Monolord’s music I’m not getting my hopes up. Despite its title, the Swedish doom trio’s second full-length for Relapse does not prove any more upbeat than their previous releases. One might almost think it was ironic! That said, if you’re going to do depressing trad doom, this is how you do it – a little bit of psychedelic, a little bit of swing, a lot of despair. It’s a mood for sure.

Whitechapel
Kin (Metal Blade)

I’m definitely not minding this trend of deathcore bands ditching the “core” in favor of sweet progressive twists – I’d much rather listen to impressive musicianship than pig squeals. Probably a lot easier on the singer’s throat, too! Kin finds them venturing even further from their origins, working in acoustic guitars and Corey Taylor-style alternative clean singing. The dynamics actually work really well even if it isn’t necessarily what people want from Whitechapel. First album of theirs I’ve listened to all the way through, if that tells you anything.

Bad Wolves and Tommy Vext Reach Settlement

Bad Wolves and former singer Tommy Vext have issued a statement saying they’ve reached a settlement over the legal issues that have engulfed the two parties in recent months.

Vext (né Thomas Cummings) and Bad Wolves parted ways in January, not long after the frontman’s ex-girlfriend, fitness model and personal trainer Whitney Johns, was granted a restraining order against him. Vext has since been replaced by Daniel “DL” Laskiewicz (ex-The Acacia Strain).

Vext then filed a lawsuit against the band’s manager, Allen Kovac, and label, Better Noise Music, alleging breach of fiduciary duties, breach of various agreements, and unjust enrichment. Furthermore, Vext alleged that Kovac, who is white, routinely used racial slurs. This despite the fact that in June of 2020, at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement’s protests spurred by the murder of George Floyd, Vext said in a video that “racism… doesn’t exist” in America.

Better Noise Music then sued the singer for copyright infringement after he took to Instagram and OnlyFans to share unreleased Bad Wolves music with his vocals on it, alleging that Vext “has resorted to actively sabotaging the band.” Bad Wolves issued a statement claiming that Vext was “emotionally and physically abusive” during his tenure with the group, and addressing what they referred to as “fraudulent claims” made by Vext with regards to songwriting credits for the band’s work. Vext, meanwhile, announced that he would be touring under the name ‘Tommy Vext and The B@d W8lv3s,’ with the band and label claiming that was “a blatant attempt to confuse concertgoers into thinking this is an approved tour.”

Billboard is now reporting that the two parties have reached a settlement in a mediation session that took place earlier this week. The band can continue to release music and tour under the Bad Wolves name while Vext is free to do the same under his own name with any label. Other terms of the agreement, such as those potentially involving songwriting credits or any money changing hands, were not disclosed.

Both parties released a joint statement to Billboard, explaining:

“Bad Wolves and its co-founder John Boecklin, alongside their label Better Noise, manager 10th Street Entertainment, and publisher 5-19, have collectively resolved their disputes with Tommy Vext. A partnership can sometimes lead to divorce. Artists have creative differences and argue over songs, credits, and much more; however, if both sides believe in their own talents, they find a path to go their separate ways. This is a settlement with no winners and no losers; it’s beneficial to everyone in order to move on and bury the hatchet. This is a new beginning and a bright future for all those concerned. We’re all excited to get back to what’s important, and that’s the music. Bad Wolves and Tommy wish each other the best going forward, and ask that their fans respect this decision.”

The settlement comes just in time for Bad Wolves new album, Dear Monsters, which comes out today, October 29.

The Ten Best Metal Albums for Keeping Away Trick-or-Treaters

It’s Halloween this weekend, and you know what that means — lots and lots of annoying kids ringing your doorbell to ask for candy, and threatening to egg or TP your house if you don’t comply.

I know Halloween is a sacred “holiday” to, like, Rob Zombie fans, but for the more discerning (read: grouchy) metalhead, it can be a true nightmare — and not in a “fun” way.

To that end, I’ve found it best to make the exterior of the Rosenberg Wing of The MetalSucks Mansion as un-in-fucking-viting as possible to deter trick-or-treaters from even thinking of approaching the front gate. There are different ways to do that, although this being Halloween, a lot of things that would normally serve as visual warnings simply don’t work here. A decapitated corpse doesn’t repel people the way it does on a normal Sunday evening.

That leaves aural and olfactory discouragement as your best options… but the latter option blows, because, y’know, you have to experience it as well.

For metal fans, the former strategy is ideal. Music others consider horrific is our bread and butter! So if you wanna keep the kiddies away on Old Hallow’s Eve, simply sit back, relax, and crank the shit outta these:

Carcass, Reek of Putrefaction

Jeff Walker recently called Carcass’ debut “a sonic abortion.” I know it’s unheard of to quote yourself on your band’s album sticker, but Walker ought to consider it.

Darkthrone, Transilvanian Hunger

Transilvanian Hunger sounds sufficiently unpolished enough that people may assume there’s actually some kind of live Satanic ritual happening in your living room.

The Dillinger Escape Plan, Calculating Infinity

As chaotic as chaos gets, Calculating Infinity is a nervous breakdown in audio form. Guaranteed to make an excellent aural moat full of alligators.

Hate Eternal, I, Monarch

I, Monarch is a war in audio form; the drums actively sound like WMDs, and Erik Rutan’s vocals sound like they must be coming from someone who eats children alive. So yeah ain’t nobody ringing your doorbell when this is blasting.

Mayhem, Ordo Ad Chao

Mayhem albums are uninviting by nature, but Ordo Ad Chao, in particular, sounds like the band built a recording studio from inside of a human colon inflicted with dysentery.

Nadja, Trembled

Ninety-nine out of a hundred people will think this is either just feedback or a recording of a band tuning their instruments or something. Either way, you, the anti-social grump, win!

Napalm Death, Scum

The first-ever grindcore albums remains one of the most difficult-to-digest releases of all time. I think people hear this music and decide whoever is blasting it must be on meth. Let ’em.

Pig Destroyer, Pornographers of Sound: Live in NYC

Recorded live at Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus Bar shortly before the lockdown and released earlier this year, Pornographers of Sound is so raw you can get trichinosis just from listening to it and so aggressive Relapse had to have it tested for steroid abuse.

Portal, Swarth

Most people don’t even consider this music.

Sabazius, Devotional Songs

This album is so long that the band can’t even upload the entire thing to Bandcamp. The track “Her Crimson Lotus Feet” alone is 72 minutes of deeply intimidating, painfully bleak doom, all with a ritualistic, occult vibe. The last half hour is so monstrous your neighbors might actually call the cops… or an exorcist.

Black Metal + Mötley Crüe: Rimfrost Reunite for “Killer Instinct” (Track Premiere)

Do you like black metal but do you also fuck with Mötley Crüe riffs? Well then boy do we have a fun track for you!

Rimfrost, recently reunited after their split-up in 2019, are getting set to release two new singles that tell the story of a murderer. The band created a storyline that runs across these two songs with their own made-up killer, taking inspiration from Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees, Leatherface and the like from the classic horror/slasher movies of yesteryear.

MetalSucks today premieres the first of those tracks, “Killer Instinct,” which is actually the second in the storyline (Rimfrost are kooky that way).

The band explains:

“When we started to write music for the comeback, we really didn’t know what we wanted to write about, but we quickly felt that we wanted and that we should continue on the horror path from ‘Expedition: Darkness’ since we all are huge horror fans. Especially, we all share some extra love for ’70s-’80s slasher/zombie horror.”

Be’lakor’s “Valence” is Awesome in the Truest Sense of the Word

MetalSucks’ much-beloved Be’lakor are be’laback with a fresh be’labanger, “Valence.”

The track, to which I could ascribe pretty much every adjective ever to describe awesomely awesome melodeath-doom, arrives in advance of the band’s new album, Coherence, which is out tomorrow (Friday, October 29) on Napalm.

Look, for all I know, Dimebag is gonna rise from the grave today and release something that will totally blow our minds. Barring that, this is probably the best new song you’re gonna hear today. When I called it “awesome” in that last paragraph, I was referring to the original definition of the word — “extremely impressive or daunting; inspiring great admiration, apprehension, or fear” — and not the way we use it colloquially. It’s the kind of song that’s so good that even if you don’t think you’re in the mood for this particular style of metal right now, you will quickly get into the mood for this particular style of metal. It has its own overwhelming center of gravity that way.

Says the band of the track:

“’Valence’ is a song which brings together elements of all our previous albums – perhaps especially the sounds and moods of Stone’s Reach and Of Breath and Bone – and then combines them with some of our newer ideas.
“The studio footage, filmed in Melbourne by Oli Sansom, was captured in the tracking and recording spaces where Coherence was created – and so it’s is a fitting song to accompany the release of the album. Enjoy!”

An Ohio Father Shot His Son for Playing Guitar For Too Long

I can only imagine what my parents went through while listening to me practice guitar, holed up in my bedroom for hours on end, flubs, bad notes, out of tune, all of it. It’s a struggle parents everywhere endure for the good of their children and for the future of humankind.

But under no circumstances can I imagine my father bursting into my room with a pistol and shooting me of frustration. Which is exactly what one man in Ohio (the Florida of the north) did to his own blood earlier this month.

Given, all parties involved here are full-grown adults. But still! Local 12-WKRC reports that Fred Hensley Sr., who is 79 years old, attacked his 50-year-old son, Fred Hensley Jr., when he grew frustrated that the younger Hensley had been playing guitar for over an hour and wouldn’t quit. The elder Hensley claimed he intended to shoot the guitar, not his son, but Jr. wasn’t having it, assaulting his father during the time it took first responders to arrive on the scene, as you can see in the mug shot above. In a recorded 911 call, Hensley, Sr. told the dispatcher, “Yeah, I accidentally shot my son here.”

This much is true: Sr. did successfully shoot the guitar. Unfortunately he also shot his son in the stomach, according to the TV news report (watch here).

A judge ordered Hensley Sr. held on a $60,000 bond, accused of assault and domestic violence. No word on Hensley Jr.’s current condition, but we wish him a speedy recovery and to never, ever, ever stop playing the guitar as long as he lives.

Volbeat Release Surprisingly Thrashy New Song “Becoming”

I don’t know if covering Metallica had a serious impact on Volbeat or if guitarist Rob Caggiano brought in a rejected riff from his Anthrax days or what, but the band’s new single, “Becoming,” is unexpectedly much heavier and thrashier than the band’s usual output. The chorus is still classic Volbeat boogie-pop-metal, but most of the song sounds like it could have been on Hardwired, if not The Black Album.

Metallica Launch MasterClass

Metallica, who are celebrating their fortieth anniversary this year, hafe become the first metal/hard rock band to be featured on MasterClass, “the streaming platform where anyone can learn from the world’s best across a wide range of subjects.”

The band’s class promises to “unpack the principles that ensure longevity as a group by being effective communicators, managing criticism and navigating collaboration.” The band will also “provide techniques for songwriting, taking members through the process of a song from its conception as a riff to its finished arrangement, complete with lyrics, solos and moments of dynamic tension.” Additionally, Metallica “will dive deep into the audience-performer relationship, sharing advice on how to connect with fans on stage and off, and how to cultivate and maintain these lifelong relationships. Their philosophies on writing lyrics, creating albums and sustaining a band’s interpersonal relationships over time will help aspiring musicians come together as a unified creative team.”

And, naturally, their class also includes an exclusive six-song performance.

Metallica frontman James Hetfield comments:

“We have sustained our bond for more than 40 years because we’ve learned a lot about each other and ourselves over time. In our class we not only teach MasterClass members how we write songs and find inspiration for our music, but how the experiences we’ve had together have contributed to successful creative collaboration.”

Video: 12-Year-Old Destroys Archspire on the Drums

There’s technical death metal and then there’s Archspire, a band who’ve staked their ever-burgeoning legacy on the ability to play faster, harder, louder and more extreme than everyone else doing it (while still somehow crafting listenable songs).

Then there’s 12-year-old Матвей Гончаров (Matvey Goncharov), a drummer based in Irkutsk, Russia who, in the 20 hours since posting a cover of Archspire’s “Bleed the Future,” has caused thousands of aspiring metal skinsmen twice or three times his age to put down their sticks forever.

Just look at this friggin’ guy! Killing it. Insanity. I feel like I see more posts on my personal social feeds for bands seeking drummers than any other instrument, so give this kid a look, will ya? Matvey’s otherworldly abilities might explain why his band, I Smile at the Dead, looks like its other members are considerably older than him.

Elsewhere on Matvey’s page he covers songs by Suicide Silence, Avenged Sevenfold, Thy Art is Murder, Dragonforce, Amon Amarth, Slaughter to Prevail and, of course, Slipknot, among countless others.

Watch the Archspire cover below. “Bleed the Future” is a perfectly suitable song choice given what Matvey’s own brutal future holds.

Allegaeon Announce New Album, Stream First Single

Allegaeon — about as exciting a progressive melo-death band as there is right now — have announced that they’ll release a new album, Damnum, on February 25 via Metal Blade. The group’s sixth full-length reunites them with longtime producer Dave Otero (Cattle Decapitation, Cephalic Carnage, Khemmis, etc.).

This already-tremendous news is made all the more so by the release of “Into Embers,” the first single from Damnum. Not only does it demonstrate that the Colorado quintet haven’t lost their touch for ripping the listener a new one, but it also demonstrates the band’s continued growth as songwriters — “Into Embers” may be their catchiest, most epically epic song to date.

Says Allegaeon vocalist Riley McShane of the track:

“As an introduction to our new album, Damnum, we are thrilled to present ‘Into Embers.’ This song embodies the dark and fitful nature of this album by bringing to the table elements of ourselves as a band and as individual musicians that we have been waiting to share with you all for a long, long time. Underoath Release New Track Featuring Ghostmane

Underoath are keeping the hits coming with their latest single, “Cycle,” featuring heavy electronic artist Ghostmane.

Underoath continue to leave their metalcore roots largely in the past on this one, in line with previous singles “Damn Excuses,” “Hallelujah” and “Pneumonia.” I’d call it a heavy rock song more than anything — it wouldn’t be out of place on your local hard rock radio station — but it’s also got a certain edge to it that you wouldn’t hear on the latest track by, say, Breaking Benjamin. It’s both catchy and heavy, so it gets a double thumbs up from me.

All That Remains Announce The Fall of Ideals Fifteenth Anniversary Tour

All That Remains will celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of their album The Fall of Ideals with a tour, on which they’ll perform the entire record, as well as a vinyl reissue.

Only two current members of the band — vocalist (“vocalist”) Phil Labonte and guitarist Mike Martin — actually played on The Fall of Ideals. That still puts them ahead of W.A.S.P., though.

Sensitivity Counselor Ted Nugent Will “Pray” for “Brainfried, Nasty, Rotten Prick” Alec Baldwin

Even if you’re not particularly plugged into pop culture, you’re likely aware of last week’s tragedy involving the actor Alec Baldwin, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, and director Joel Souza. While rehearsing on the set of a new western, Rust, Baldwin — reportedly holding a prop gun the assistant director, David Halls, had indicated did not contain a live round — accidentally shot and killed Hutchins while also injuring Souza. Hutchins was just 42-years-old, and leaves behind a 9-year-old son and a husband of sixteen years.

It’s still not entirely clear where in the chain of command things went so very wrong (an investigation into the incident is ongoing, and as of this writing, no charges have yet been filed), although it is clear that the Rust production was plagued with problems, not the least of which was that a) the very same gun had already misfired twice during the production, b) Halls has previously been accused of failing to “maintain a safe working environment” on other projects, including a 2019 movie from which he was fired after a gun went off on set, and c) Rust‘s 24-year-old armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, also has a history of allegedly skirting her duties.

The overall point here is that this is a terrible tragedy and we don’t quite know yet at whose feet the blame lies. A family is destroyed, a man has to live with accidentally killing someone, and one or more of the people involved are likely looking at prison time. The whole situation is deeply, deeply awful.

So thank Christ we have Mr. Sensitivity himself, Ted Nugent, to weigh in on the situation.

Nugent, who at this point may actually be more famous for being a gun nut than for his music, went on Facebook this week and said the following:

“I’m not gonna comment right now on… What’s the dirtbag that shot the guy with a prop gun? Alec Baldwin. We don’t know the details. But until we know the details, all I wanna say is I know Alec Baldwin is just a nasty, nasty man. He would attack the good families of the NRA that did nothing wrong and blame us when there was a school shooting. So we know he’s a liar and his brain is fried and he’s just a prick. But you know what we’re gonna do for the brainfried, nasty, rotten prick? We’re gonna pray for him until we find out the details of that terrible accident — if it WAS an accident. Because you know if you point the gun at something and you blow that thing up, it’s not an accident; that’s negligence. So as big of a prick as Alec Baldwin is, we’re actually praying for the prick, because I know he’s hurtin’. Nobody wants to kill anybody in an unnecessary moment like that.”

Nugent, whose accomplishments include threatening to assassinate Barack Obama, dodging the draft, having sexual relations with children, and headlining a grocery store, went on to make this whole thing about himself, reminding people that he was on a popular television show in 1986:

“When I did the ‘Miami Vice’ episode, I had a prop gun that happened to be the exact replica of the Taurus brushed nickel nine-millimeter that I carried at the time. So when I went to perform on ‘Miami Vice’ back in ’84, ’85, ‘Little Miss Dangerous’ time, I made sure I disassembled my Taurus and separated the spring and the slide and the frame and the barrel, and I separated everything so there was no possibility whatsoever that someone would mistake my real brushed nickel nine-millimeter with the prop brushed nickel nine-millimeter. And even when I shot Don Johnson in the shootout, I made sure I wasn’t pointing it at him. I cannot point a gun at anything I’m not willing to destroy. So I can’t wait to find out what happened.”

Finally, in true Trumper form, Nugent ended his rant by encouraging fans to draw their own conclusions and completely ignore any facts which may contradict those opinions:

“But because he’s a liberal prick, and the media is controlled by liberal pricks, and all the so-called justice in America is controlled by liberal pricks — for the most part. Only the guilty need to feel guilty, ’cause there’s some really good judges and good lawyers and good attorney generals out there — I think nine total. But since the so-called court systems of America are basically run by a gang of pricks, they’ll probably cover for the Alec prick. And we’ll probably never find out what happened.”

The thing is, Alec Baldwin is a liberal, and Alec Baldwin is a prick. But neither of those things mean he’s responsible for what happened. Maybe he is to blame — he was a producer on the film, and there’s certainly an argument to be made that he should not have just taken Halls’ word that the gun was empty but, rather, checked it himself — but we really don’t know yet. And if Baldwin wasn’t a liberal, you can be certain that the tone of Nugent’s ramble would be different, and would likely involve an assertion that the “liberal pricks” who “run the justice system” were conspiring to put Baldwin away.

And where does Ted Nugent get off playing detective here, anyway? Dude didn’t go to “mask college.” Do we think he went to “detective college”???

Finally I just wanna say I hope Nugent takes his prayers and shoves them right up his huge gaping asshole. In the words of Anthony Jeselnik:

Arjen Lucassen’s Star One Debuts New Song Featuring Steve Vai, Tony Martin, and Others

Arjen Lucassen’s Star One Featuring Arjen Lucassen will release its first album in twelve years, Revel in Time, on February 8 via InsideOut Music.

If you’re not familiar with this project, every song is inspired by a different sci-fi property, including A Clockwork Orange (“Victim of the Modern Age”), Firefly (“Earth That Was”), The Matrix (“Digital Rain”), and Planet of the Apes (“Human See, Human Do”).

The first single from Revel in Time is called “Lost Children of the Universe.” Given that a) the lyric video has a lot of desert imagery and b) everyone is talking about Dune right now, I initially assumed it was, in fact, inspired by Frank Herbert’s novel. But apparently it’s actually drawing on Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. Which explains why it’s so long and has such a confusing ending.

You can check out “Lost Children of the Universe” below. There will be two versions on Revel in Time — one with vocals by Tony Martin (ex-Black Sabbath) and one with vocals by Roy Khan (Conception). The lyric video blends the performances of both singers.

The track also includes a guest solo by Steve Vai.
