Croatia and Morocco have both named their teams for today’s World Cup third-place play-off in Qatar.

Aside from the obvious disappointment of missing out on the final, Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic‘s side have largely been free of injury concerns throughout their time in Qatar.

However, Celtic defender Josip Juranovic will miss the meeting with Morocco this afternoon after playing for 70 minutes with a calf injury in the semi-final defeat by Argentina.

While today’s game offered the chance to hand some of Croatia’s back-up options a run-out, another strong team has been named as they look to finish third in a World Cup for the second time, having first done so in 1998.

Luka Modric – who could well be playing his last World Cup game – is flanked by Mateo Kovacic in midfield, though Marcelo Brozovic was forced off against Argentina and misses out here.

Star defender Josko Gvardiol shakes off a foot issue to line up at the back alongside Josip Sutalo with Dejan Lovren out. Up front, Dalic chooses Andrej Kramaric over Bruno Petkovic as left-back Borna Sosa misses out.

In a half of two halves, it took Morocco a while to wake up and by that point they were already a goal down, but they're far from out of it as things stand and France will need a lot of half-time oranges to find the energy to compete against the Moroccan spirit.

France again look happy to wait patiently for an opening between the lines or in behind the Moroccan defence. Bono and his team are also trying to find holes in the French system, but they still haven't found...

A great challenge from El Yamiq inside the box stops Griezmann from getting in behind (again) down the right side of the pitch.

Corner... and Varane almost makes it 2-0 at the front post but his effort flies wide.

France are, little by little, controlling the balance of the game, trying to draw Morocco out and then pounce in behind.

The striker's shot was saved and it bounced back to the Real Madrid midfielder who gave it immediately to Giroud inside the box, whose shot somehow went wide.

Half an hour gone and not much to shout about other than the goal; France have looked better but that's because they have better players.

Morocco aren't out of this at all and maybe they can find an opening to get at the champions.

France are finding Griezmann well in the pockets of space that are being left behind the Morocco midfielders.

First yellow card of the night goes to Boufal, after he ran into Theo Hernandez. It looked painful, but I don't think it's worthy of a card; Dembélé's challenge that went unpunished a few minutes earlier was a lot more dangerous.

We've had a few minutes now of lots of small fouls and no team is managing to hold onto the ball.

It's something that the Morocco fans obviously like, as they've just broken out into a huge chorus of chanting.

Boufal gets penalised for a foul on Theo Hernandez and Morocco miss out on a good chance to mount an attack down the right side.

That's a back four for Morocco now, and they return to their habitual 4-1-4-1, which had worked so well thrughout the tournament.

So far, Morocco have let France in twice with sloppy errors and have nearly been punished on both occasions.

FIFA puts a fine of 50,000 Swiss Francs ($53,000) against the Croatian team.

The International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) approved a fine against the Croatian national team, which reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, as a punishment for the behaviour of its fans towards Canadian goalkeeper Milan Burian during the two teams’ match in the group stage that ended with the victory of the first (4-1).

FIFA said, in a statement, that a disciplinary investigation imposed a fine of 50,000 Swiss francs on the Croatian Federation ($53,000) in connection with the behaviour of Croatian fans during the Croatia vs. Canada match in the FIFA World Cup on November 27.

Croatian fans insulted Milan Burian with offensive banners that targeted him during the match.

Croatia's penalty comes 48 hours before they face Brazil in the quarter-finals on Friday, 9 December 2022.

The Serbian Confederation was also the subject of a FIFA investigation and received a fine of 20,000 Swiss francs because of a controversial flag in which the Kosovo map was incorporated that was hanging in the team's dressing room during the group stage match against Brazil.

A mouthwatering World Cup 2022 quarter-final which promises goals takes place at the Lusail Iconic Stadium on Friday evening, as the Netherlands do battle with Argentina.

Louis van Gaal's men overcame the USA 3-1 to book their spot in the last eight, while the South American champions got the better of Australia 2-1 to keep their hopes of glory alive.

Cody Gakpo's hot streak in front of goal may have come to an end against the USA, but Van Gaal's effervescent wing-backs shouldered the goalscoring burden in Saturday's last-16 battle, where the Yanks failed to build on a fast start and were punished for it.

Denzel Dumfries provided identical assists for identical goals for Memphis Depay and Daley Blind in the first half, and while Haji Wright's unorthodox flick gave the USA a glimmer of hope, Blind turned provider for the in-demand Dumfries to volley home unchallenged to settle the match.

Van Gaal did little to justify his claims that the Netherlands were not a "boring" side when the USA put them under the cosh in the opening exchanges, but Oranje sure did teach their American counterparts a lesson in ruthlessness to make the quarter-finals for the third time in a row.

Indeed, the Netherlands have now reached the last eight in four of their last five World Cup tournaments - the outlier being a last-16 elimination in 2006 - and they progressed to the semi-finals in both 2010 and 2014 before miserably failing to qualify for the Russia edition.

Not since 1994 have the 2010 runners-up failed to win a quarter-final match at the World Cup, and the Netherlands' unbeaten streak in all competitions now stands at a whopping 19 matches, but something has to give when two attacking heavyweights battle for supremacy.

The script had been written for Lionel Messi to end his knockout hoodoo in his 1,000th career match, and the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner finally scored his first non-group stage World Cup goal in trademark Messi fashion against Australia, who did not go down waving the white flag.

The Paris Saint-Germain veteran found the back of the net with a low finish before Julian Alvarez robbed Mathew Ryan of the ball for Argentina's second - much to the amusement of the goalkeeper's Copenhagen rival Kamil Grabara - before Craig Goodwin's deflected strike gave Australia dreams of an improbable turnaround.

The Socceroos very nearly did the unthinkable through Newcastle United-bound teenager Garang Kuol in the final few seconds, but Emiliano Martinez produced a vital save to send Argentina through to the last eight, albeit in very nervy fashion.

Argentina most recently progressed from the quarter-finals in 2014 en route to finishing as runners-up, but they had lost their last three ties in the last eight before that in 1998, 2006 and 2010, and their hopes of glory have ended at the hands of European teams nine times in a row since the inaugural 1930 edition.

History therefore does not favour Lionel Scaloni's men, but a 13-game scoring streak in all competitions does, and La Albiceleste would do well to wrap Messi up in cotton wool as they attempt to end a barren streak in previous meetings with the Dutch.

Indeed, Argentina have failed to score in each of their last three matches versus the Netherlands, who have held La Albiceleste to two 0-0 draws in their most recent two World Cup meetings - winning the 2014 semi-final on spot kicks - but the last thing that the Qatar tournament needs is yet another goalless affair.

The Netherlands were briefly handed a scare with Jeremie Frimpong (ankle) before the win over the USA, but the Bayer Leverkusen right-back formed part of a fully-fit squad for that game, and Van Gaal should have everyone available for the quarter-final too.

Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij could not train on Sunday due to discomfort, but he has since returned to the group to challenge the established order of Jurrien Timber, Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Ake, although he will likely be fighting a losing battle there.

Depay's opener against the USA made it 24 goals in his last 30 outings for the Netherlands - as well as 10 assists - and the Barcelona attacker should once again partner up with Gakpo in an untouched Dutch XI.

As far as Argentina are concerned, Sevilla attacker Papu Gomez came off with a sprained ankle in the 50th minute against Australia and is a doubt for the contest, but Angel Di Maria is stepping up his recovery from a quadriceps problem and should be fit to replace his stricken teammate. Rodrigo De Paul is also fine despite a spot of muscular fatigue.

Scaloni has no injury concerns elsewhere and continues to keep faith in the centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Nicolas Otamendi, which should remain as it is despite constant pressure from Lisandro Martinez.

The likes of Angel Correa and Leandro Paredes were put through their paces in a training ground XI earlier this week, but neither man will be expected to edge out Di Maria or the impressive Enzo Fernandez for a start in the quarter-final.

The footballing gods should not deliver another drab 0-0 with so much offensive talent on the Lusail field and the Dutch's penchant for lightning-quick counter-attacks, and both sides also possess a slight vulnerability to suggest that a high-scoring affair should be on the menu.

Stalemates between the Netherlands and Argentina have been commonplace at the World Cup, and we do not expect that theme to change here, so Scaloni's side may have to rely on their penalty-kick prowess to set up a semi-final clash with Croatia or Brazil.

Brazil will endeavour to keep their hopes of lifting a record-extending sixth world title alive when they lock horns with Croatia in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup at Education City Stadium on Friday.

The Selecao sent out a statement to the rest of the tournament when they breezed past South Korea in the last 16, while the Checkered Ones were pushed all the way by Japan before edging through on penalties.

For the second successive World Cup and for the third time in their history, Croatia will be competing in the quarter-finals on the biggest international stage after beating Japan 3-1 on penalties in the last 16 on Monday.

After Ivan Perisic cancelled out a first-half strike from Daizen Maeda, the two nations were forced into extra time and then penalties, but the Checkered Ones prevailed in the shootout with goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic saving three of Japan's four spot kicks to help Zlatko Dalic's side book their place in the last eight.

Croatia are no strangers to drama at the highest level of international football, as they have been taken to extra time in seven of their last eight knockout matches at major tournaments since finishing third at their first World Cup finals back in 1998.

Four of Croatia's last five knockout matches at the World Cup have gone to extra time and three of which have seen the Checkered Ones triumph on penalties – a 4-2 defeat to France in the 2018 final is the only time during this run that a knockout game involving Croatia was decided in 90 minutes.

Dalic and co are unbeaten in their last 10 internationals and have lost only one of their last 20 games across all competitions since Euro 2020, but this impressive run is set to be tested by a high-flying Brazil outfit who head into Friday's contest off the back of their best performance at this year's tournament in Qatar against South Korea.

The Brazilian flair and swagger that football fans across the globe are accustomed to when watching the five-time world champions was on show on Monday, as Tite's side sambaed their way into the quarter-finals courtesy of a 4-1 victory over South Korea in the last 16.

The Selecao raced into a four-goal lead within the first 36 minutes with Vinicius Junior, Neymar, Richarlison and Lucas Paqueta all on the scoresheet, before a stunning consolation strike from Paik Seung-ho gave the South Korean supporters something to cheer in the final 15 minutes.

Richarlison had already scored a goal-of-the-tournament contender with an acrobatic effort in the group stage, but he now has another to his name after finishing off an outrageously skilful team goal that epitomises Brazilian football and proves why Tite's side have the credentials to go all the way in Qatar.

Brazil are oozing confidence at present and they are now preparing for their seventh successive World Cup quarter-final, but they will be wary of their recent record at this stage of the competition. The Selecao have been knocked out at the quarter-final stage in three of the last four World Cups, losing to European trio France, Netherlands and Belgium in 2006, 2010 and 2018 respectively.

Since beating Germany 2-0 in the 2002 World Cup final, Brazil have lost each of their last five knockout matches against European nations in the competition. However, the Selecao have never lost in four previous meetings with Croatia, while the 1-0 group-stage loss to Cameroon last week is their only defeat in their last 19 internationals which bodes well heading into Friday's clash.

Croatia duo Borna Sosa and Josip Stanisic both missed the win over Japan due to illness and a muscle injury respectively; the former should be available to return and could replace Borna Barisic at left-back, while the latter remains doubtful and will be assessed ahead of kickoff.

Dalic is unlikely to make too many changes to his starting lineup, with midfield maestros Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozovic and Mateo Kovacic all expected to retain their places on Friday – both Modric and Kovacic are just one booking away from suspension along with Barisic and Dejan Lovren.

Indeed, Lovren is set to continue his partnership in defence alongside sought-after starlet Josko Gvardiol, while Marko Livaja and Ante Budimir will be battling to displace Bruno Petkovic as the central striker. Perisic and Andrej Kramaric, meanwhile, are poised to start again on the flanks.

As for Brazil, they will be without Gabriel Jesus and Alex Telles, who are ruled out for the rest of the World Cup with knee injuries, while Tite has revealed that Alex Sandro is unlikely to feature as he continues to recover from a hip problem.

Sandro's Juventus teammate Danilo is therefore set to continue at left-back, joining Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and Eder Militao in the back four.

Militao is one of three Selecao stars along with Fred and Bruno Guimaraes who are only one yellow card away from missing a potential semi-final bout, and the latter two are expected to begin again on the substitutes' bench, with Casemiro and Paqueta preferred by Tite to start in centre-midfield.

Star attacker Neymar recovered from an ankle injury to start and score against South Korea, and he is poised to continue in an advanced role in between wingers Raphinha and Vinicius Junior, while Richarlison is set to lead the line up front.

Indeed, Croatia have frustrated many opponents on the biggest international stage, but a match-up with Brazil could be a step too far, and we can see the five-time world champions edging themselves through to the semi-finals in 90 minutes.
