Today I meet the Mini Globe Race founder Don McIntyre and contestants Renaud Stitelmann and Daniel Turner.

Don McIntyre is the founder and Race Chairman of the Golden Globe Race, Ocean Globe Race and the Mini Globe Race.

All three round-the-world races are unique in the sailing industry, focusing on human values and real challenges to create inspiring stories.

He is also founder of the new Class Globe 5.80 one design plywood mini ocean racing yacht.

He has been organising sailing events and ocean adventures since 1984. Don is an experienced circumnavigator and seen as one of Australia’s great explorers.

It is a pleasure talking to Don about the Mini Globe Race. I also interviewed the winner Renaud Stitelmann about how he managed to get ahead of the race. And second boat coming into Fiji; Daniel Turner. He talks about building the boat.

Jasmine Harrison – UNITED KINGDOM – Numbatou

Jasmine is a British adventurer who loves to travel and tackle a new challenge, with two World Records under her belt.

She achieved worldwide recognition in 2021 when aged 21 became the youngest solo female to row the Atlantic Ocean. In 2022 she was the first female to swim the full length of the British Isles, from Lands End to John o’ Groats.

Since completing her first challenge, Jasmine has talked for global companies, award ceremonies and schools. Her next challenge is preparing for the Mini Globe Race 2025!

Jasmine Harrison is no stranger to pushing the limits at sea.

At the age of 21, she became the youngest woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 70 days; rowing up to 20 hours a day in flat calm seats to 10-metre-high waves during the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge; she also had to recover the boat after capsize and push through injuries and physical exhaustion.

A year later, in 2022, Jasmine Harrison swam 900 miles in 110 days, from Land’s End to John o’Groats – becoming the first woman and third person ever to achieve this feat. Practical Boat Owner covered her story from the point of view of the skipper of her support boat, Will Bruton.

The double World Record holder grew up in North Yorkshire and soon became a competitive swimmer. After school, she began teaching swimming before an opportunity to teach in Grenada for three months.

“This was my first major trip abroad and within a few weeks, Hurricane Maria struck devasting many Caribbean islands. Grenada was relatively unscathed but a US skipper with a couple of yachts offered relief missions to Dominica and wanted crew. I jumped at the chance,” she explained.

John D. Cowperthwait then lent Jasmine the 32ft Catalina, Zayr Naytik, and for three months, she sailed from Trinidad to the US Virgin Islands; it was while in Antigua that she saw the arrival of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge rowing boats and decided she had to compete.

“After 70 days of the highs of surfing waves and seeing amazing wildlife, and the lows of capsizes, a near miss by a ship, being on para-anchor and at times going backwards I made it into Antigua. The international press went mad as someone had achieved something remarkable whilst most of the world was reeling from lockdown, and I was thrust into the limelight. It was all a stark contrast to the previous 70 days!” said Jasmine of her experience.

She was placed on the Forbes 30-under-30 list of the world’s “brightest young entrepreneurs, leaders, and stars”, and started motivational speaking, as well as teaching swimming.

“I wanted another challenge and decided to swim the full length of the UK, from Lands End to John O’Groats, 900 miles. Yet again it was hard gathering sponsorship, a support yacht and crew. I set off in July 2022, with a Bavaria 38 in support, and towards the end, a RIB to deal with the very worst of the seas off the north of Scotland, and completed the swim in 110 days, then sailed to Plymouth from John o’Groats via the Caledonian Canal. I gained a Guinness World Record for the first female to swim Land’s End to John o’Groats. I also raised more money for charity to add to the funds raised by my row, in total more than £30k.”

Even before her swim, Jasmine had already decided to enter the 2025 Mini Globe Race and by June 2023, she had bought the Globe 5.80, Numbatou.

Hull number 88 was built by Etienne Messikomer, who sailed her to first place in the inaugural Globe 5.80 Transat in 2021.

“I sailed her from France to Plymouth, and then towed her to Hartlepool to start training. I’ve had amazing support from the sailing community and Rotary clubs, I’ve been made a Sailing Squadron Associate of the Royal Yacht Squadron, am a member of the Ocean Cruising Club, have raced in Cowes Week and various South Coast series, and have been ‘adopted’ by the Tees and Hartlepool Yacht club as I learn more skills on more boats, whilst also learning how to handle Numbatou,” explained Jasmine, who has also launched a crowdfunding page to fund her entry.

“I want to inspire everyone, particularly young females, that anything is possible!”

Ertan Beskardes – UNITED KINGDOM – Trekka

Turkish-British sailor Ertan Beskarde entered the 2018 and the 2022 edition of the Golden Globe Race. Both times he had to make a bold decision to retire for personal reasons.

In 2022, Ertan retired after reaching the Cape Town gate on November 16 on Lazy Otter.

He said he lived an incredible experience over the 10 weeks, but did not think he would enjoy the next three months to Cape Horn, citing extreme isolation. “I was looking for the unknown and I found it”, he said.

Now Ertan is energised to make the Mini Transat in 2023 and MGR 2025 going forward, following his passion for the sea. The style of the 5.80 race and Ertan’s exceptional experience in preparing for this kind of challenge are promising a great match.

His much-loved friendly style was obvious to all in the GGR and his breakfast omelettes for all on the marina became world famous! Follow Ertan’s story in our 5.80 updates.

He came to the UK in 1979 and made a career in military tailoring and regalia, before setting up his own company with his wife in Bournemouth in 1994.

There, they built a boat in the back garden and have been sailing regularly in nearby Christchurch Harbour since 1998.

As their children grew up he graduated first to a Drascombe Cruiser Longboat, then a Parker 235 cruising yacht before buying a Jeanneau Odyssey 33 in 2012, sailing each year-round.

Ertan Beskardes has plenty of experience preparing for solo races, having entered both the 2018 and 2022 Golden Globe Race.

But loneliness and the lack of contact with his family ended both races for the Turkish-UK sailor.

Now, he plans to compete in the 2025 Mini Globe Race: the difference? With no restrictions on having modern communications equipment on board, he will be able to stay in constant contact with his family while sailing each leg of the race.

“A lack of communication with my family has been my one issue in the past; it takes the pleasure out of the race,” explained Ertan Beskardes.

“To be able to just call my mother, and say ‘How are you, mom? And she says, ‘I’m okay’; that makes me feel really very happy.”

A sailor since his teenage years, Beskardes learnt to handle a yacht on the Bosphorus strait in Turkey, where he lived until moving to England and settling in Bournemouth, where he runs a military tailoring and regalia business with his wife, Arzu.

Together, they built their first boat in the back garden of their home, regularly sailing out of Christchurch.

Since those early days, they have owned a Drascombe Cruiser Longboard, a Parker 235, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 33 and the Rustler 36, Lazy Otter, which Beskardes sailed in both editions of the Golden Globe Race.

He has since sold Lazy Otter and bought the Globe 5.80, Trekka from the Mini Globe Race and Class Globe 5.80 founder, Don McIntyre.

Beskardes has already qualified for the Mini Globe Race 2025, having finished the 2023 Globe 5.80 Transat, where he placed fourth.

Trekka is based in Antigua, the start of the 2025 race; leg 1 will begin on 23 February 2025,

“This will be quite an epic journey in a little boat. Having taken part in the 2018 and 2022 Golden Globe Races, I am hoping it will be third time lucky to make it around the world.”

Jacob describes himself as “born to sail, but forced to work!” Sailing has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember, likely starting long before he had his first tooth. His dreams have always been filled with the image of waves on the far seas.

Growing up by the large waters of Zalew Szczeciński and near Poland’s second biggest lake, Dąbie, Jacob experienced early adventures, storms, and solitary escapades while sailing small craft made by his father and a friend. His aspirations led him to marine college with the hope of securing a job at sea. However, the harsh realities of the early 1990s and the political and economic situation in a post-communist country thwarted his dreams. Without the right connections, a career in the marine industry was unattainable, and he had to pursue a landsman’s career instead.

Currently, Jacob owns a 26’ Westerly Centaur and actively sails along the South and West coast of Ireland. He also occasionally delivers yachts for others around Ireland, Scotland, and Spain. Despite these activities, his soul’s desire remains unfulfilled. Having raised two children and built a home, he now aims to “run a marathon”- his version being to circumnavigate the globe single-handed.

For quite some time, Jacob has been interested in the Golden Globe Race, seeing it as the epitome of true sailing for mature and tough sailors. Although he doubted he could ever afford a suitable boat or match the level of this challenge, his perspective changed when he read about the Mini Globe Race. Learning that Janusz Maderski, a professional yacht designer and esteemed sailor from his homeland, was the appointed designer for the 5.80 boat made him realise he had no more excuses. This race is exactly what he has been waiting for over the past 50 years.
