Follow our journey and learn from our experiences over several trips. Here is a compilation of more casual restaurants, snack places we visited during our 2016, 2017, 2019, 2023-2024 New York City trips. Our goal was to find good eats at reasonable prices, primarily restaurants where locals go. We have no interest sampling cuisine that is done better at home in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is challenging on an expensive ‘island’, full of pricey tourist traps.

Why did we dine here? – The Progress is the long awaited follow on to immensely popular State Bird Provisions. Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski have a hard act to expand on, but all foodies are salivating at the thought of this new restaurant. First visit was way back in 2014, latest visit was summer 2025. They have one Michelin Star. “Whole Animal, Whole Vegetable philosophy make up our menus and local farm relationships define our cooking. We specialize in the abundance of our region.” The Progress is located next door to State Bird and gives the diner a dinner party style meal intended to be served family style. Much easier to snag a seat here, than next door! It has a traditional menu but used to be pick 6 (or more – you just pay more) items from a list of 15 or so. Cutting edge creative and unusual ingredients will be featured on an evolving menu. They have gotten more vegetable forward, perfect for vegetarians. The decor is typical trendy modern SF. A loud restaurant with raw wood tables and hip music. The crowd is definitely older, towards 40+ folks. There are 3 tables in the bar that […]

Dalida is a Modern Mediterranean Restaurant in San Francisco’s Presidio. Dalida gets its name from a few places. In Polish-Yiddish it means dahlia, the official flower of San Francisco, but its also chef’s mother’s name. The food is a little Turkish, a little Greek, Armenian, Jewish, Arabic and Persian. The chef Sayat Oyzilmaz worked at Blue Hill at Stone Barns and joined the Le Bernardin. He’s probably best known around SF in working at Noosh and leaving. (Yes we ate there when they were cooking) The food is geared towards eating family style. Dalida is divided into 2 areas, dining room and bar on one side. Open kitchen with counter and communal seating on the other. They tried to put us in the communal area even with a reservation on our first visit. The 2nd visit we ate in the dining room. Lunch on a Tuesday was pretty full. Food is exciting, not the usual fare you are used to seeing. Good place to eat with a larger party so you can sample more dishes. Service was fair. Waiter was not that up on the food and could not handle dietary restrictions well. He annouced the dish we order didn’t […]

Minmon is an unique Chinese seafood buffet in Shanghai with a location in Shenzhen. It is located about 20 minutes from the Bund. We watch a video about this spot and wanted to give it a try. Decor is modern and nautical in theme. The selection of seafood items geared towards Chinese cooking are unparalleled! What a fun spot. No reservations. We came for a weekend dinner and paid CN¥299 = US$41 for a ton of food AND drink. You can pay 499 and get special dishes like Uni and Lobster. There is so much variety, we found NO need to do this. Free toy if you checking on Dianping. (Can’t trust those ratings!) Buffet Walk Through Only found in China! We had a lot of fun coming here and experiencing this pure gluttony. Clearly this is not the world’s best buffet, but it definitely stands out. Probably will not return, but we’ll never forget this spot. It was an affordable blast. Food Review: Appetizers – there are a bunch of pre-cooked items including fair dim sum. Skewers, fried season and fries, cooked oysters, prawns, and more. Small selection of sushi. 8/10 Fruits were plentiful – dragon fruit, watermelon, pineapple, […]

We are lovers of high end lavish buffets and nowhere are they more present than in Hong Kong. Not trying to get our money’s worth, we like trying all sorts of different food, items we would never order! We’ve been to many top ones of the years. Conrad was our favorite for a long time but only does a Sunday brunch buffet. This time we tried the Verandah dinner buffet on a Saturday night. They have buffets at breakfast, lunch and dinner, with more expensive prices on the weekend and holidays. Reservations are a must, they filled up about a week in advance. At lunch and dinnertime, the wide variety of hot and cold appetisers, seafood, salads, entrées, and desserts reflects cuisines from all over the world – including Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Buffet Lunch (Monday to Friday) costs Adult HK$750, Children (Age 3-11) HK$630 Buffet Lunch (Saturday) Adult HK$850, Children (Age 3-11) HK$700 Buffet Lunch (Sunday & Public Holiday) Adult HK$1,150, Children (Age 3-11) HK$900 Buffet Dinner Adult HK$1,150, Children (Age 3-11) HK$900 All Prices add 10% service charge. Tea and coffee are included. Optional beverage package add-ons are available. The Peninsula is an old school hotel with […]

Zhangjiajie is an amazing place in the Hunan Province of China. The scenic beauty of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is unmatched with its sandstone pillars. The movie Avatar was inspired there. Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains are located in Yuanjiajie, Wulingyuan Scenic Area of Hunan Province, China. The area is accessible via Zhangjiajie City. Be sure to pay extra for VIP tickets to cut in line! The secret is out, they received over 20 million visitors in the first half of 2024. Here are some places we ate on our China trip in 2025 when we stayed at 3 places (Fenghuang County, Zhangjiajie, and Wulinyuan) in this beautiful area. Dianping and our local hotels were helpful in finding these less touristy spots which do not have English menus. 5/11/25 唤子饭庄 – Huanzi Restaurant Fenghuang County, Phoenix Ancient City We ate at the most popular restaurant right near the East Gate entrance to the Ancient City. This multi-floor restaurant was recommended by our tour guide, who also dined with us. Dinner for 4 with a lot of food leftover was RMB 343 = USD$47. You need to hail servers to get stuff done. Service is drop and go. Food review Ribs (¥128) were […]
