Federal appeals court clears way for DeSantis-backed law restricting children at some drag shows

A divided federal appeals court cleared the way for Florida to enforce a Gov. Ron DeSantis-backed law restricting children from certain sexually explicit live performances, including drag performances the state argues are obscene for minors.

The full U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit ruled Tuesday 8-5 that Orlando restaurant Hamburger Mary’s had not shown it was likely to succeed in its First and Fourteenth Amendment challenge to Florida’s Protection of Children Act.

The court vacated the preliminary injunction in full and sent the case back to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida for further proceedings. The ruling clears the way for enforcement, though Hamburger Mary’s could still seek additional review.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier celebrated the decision in a post on X.

"Huge victory for our team at the 11th Circuit! After 3 years of litigation, the full court affirmed the constitutionality of Florida’s ban on children attending sexualized drag shows," Uthmeier wrote.

The law makes it a misdemeanor to "knowingly admit a child to an adult live performance," according to the court’s opinion.

The law defines an "adult live performance" as a live show that "depicts or simulates nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement, or specific sexual activities ... lewd conduct, or the lewd exposure of prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts" and that also predominantly appeals to a "prurient, shameful, or morbid interest," is "patently offensive" for the age of the child present and, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value for that child's age.

Writing for the court, Judge Andrew Brasher called the law "a straightforward regulation of obscenity."

"Preventing children from attending adult live performances obscene for them is rationally related to Florida’s interest in safeguarding the well-being of minors," Brasher wrote.

The majority rejected Hamburger Mary’s arguments that the terms "lewd" and "the age of the child present" made the law unconstitutionally vague or overly broad.

Brasher wrote that Florida Supreme Court precedent limits the meaning of "lewd" to sexual conduct. He also wrote that all three parts of the law’s obscenity test must be met before a performance is prohibited.

The majority also ruled that using an age-variable standard did not make the law unconstitutional on its face.

Eight judges agreed that Hamburger Mary’s was unlikely to succeed on the merits of its constitutional claims. Six judges joined Brasher's opinion in full, while Judges Kevin Newsom and Britt Grant joined all but the section addressing universal injunctions.

Grant wrote separately that the court did not need to rule on the scope of the injunction after deciding that Hamburger Mary’s was unlikely to succeed on the merits.

Five judges dissented.

Judge Robin Rosenbaum argued that the law forces venues to guess which performances are suitable for children of different ages while exposing operators to criminal penalties, fines and the possible loss of a business license.

"Today our Court embraces mess-around-and-find-out (‘MAFO’) First Amendment jurisprudence," Rosenbaum wrote.

She argued that the law could chill protected speech by forcing businesses to risk prosecution before learning how officials would apply it.

Rosenbaum also argued that the statute effectively imposes strict liability over a child’s age and could expose violators to jail, fines and the loss of a business license.

She wrote that the law "wields a Titanic-sized iceberg of chilling power against protected speech."

Judge Nancy Abudu filed a separate dissent focused on the law’s legislative history.

Abudu argued that comments from the law’s supporters, along with warnings from legislative staff, supported Hamburger Mary’s claim that the measure would chill protected drag performances.

The majority rejected that argument, writing that courts generally do not strike down an otherwise constitutional law based on an alleged improper legislative motive.

The majority also wrote that nothing in the law targets performances simply because they feature drag.

Hamburger Mary’s filed the lawsuit in 2023 after Florida enacted the measure.

The restaurant said it had previously hosted Sunday drag performances advertised as family-friendly but canceled those shows and barred minors from its other performances because it feared enforcement.

A federal district judge initially issued a preliminary injunction blocking enforcement of the law. A divided three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit affirmed that decision before the full court agreed to rehear the case.

DeSantis' and Uthmeier's offices, as well as the ACLU of Florida, did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., one of Congress’ most outspoken progressives and a member of the "Squad," won the 12th Congressional District's Democratic primary on Tuesday evening, teeing up her reelection for a fifth term.

Tlaib’s primary victory against Michigan state lawmaker Shanelle Jackson and Inkster Mayor Byron Nolen continues a string of victories for progressives as the Democratic Party’s far-left wing enjoys pronounced primary election success that has strengthened the hand of their coalition. It has also widened the range of positions held by their candidates.

When Tlaib and her fellow Squad members joined the House of Representatives in 2019, their campaigns stood out for their far-left views. Tlaib and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., in particular, stood out because of their membership in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

Eight years later, the DSA has backed Tlaib again.

The group has also vastly expanded its influence beyond established figures like Tlaib.

From primary candidates in New York like socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier and her victory over incumbent Rep. Adriano Espillat, D-N.Y., the veteran chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, to Melat Kiros, another socialist in Colorado, unseating 30-year incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., progressives have expanded their influence over the party.

It’s a stark reversal of the party’s finger-pointing in the wake of disappointing 2020 congressional election results where Democrats were left with slimmer majorities in the House and Senate.

"Don’t say socialism ever again. We need to get back to the basics," then-Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., said at the time.

But Tlaib, along with other progressives in the party, pushed back, arguing that their platforms would set the future tone of the party. In a widely circulated memo on Nov. 10, 2020, they made the case that progressives would appeal to an expanded voter base.

"We need a new generation of leadership grounded in a multiracial, working-class experience and background," the memo urged.

"As we speak, congressional Democrats are debating why they underperformed and some have been quick to blame progressives. There is no denying Republicans levied salient rhetorical attacks against Democrats, but these will continue to happen as they do every cycle," they continued.

Tlaib, in comments to Politico at the time, argued the platform would appeal to a kind of populist streak in the Democratic Party — similar to the populism she saw present in Trump’s appeal among the GOP.

"If we truly want to unify our country, we have to really respect every single voice. We say that so willingly when we talk about Trump supporters, but we don't say that willingly for my Black and Brown neighbors and for LGBTQ neighbors or marginalized people," Tlaib said.

Having once again secured the Democratic nomination in 2026, Tlaib will advance to the general election on Nov. 3, 2026, where she is heavily favored to win. She last won reelection against Republican challenger James Hooper in a 69.7% to 25.4% victory in 2024.

Trump-backed Bronze Star veteran secures party nod in must-win district

Bronze Star veteran and Republican congressional candidate Michael Bouchard won a GOP primary on Tuesday evening in a bid to represent Michigan’s 10th Congressional District after receiving an endorsement from President Donald Trump.

Republicans are hoping Bouchard’s storied credentials and message of righting the country’s direction are enough to carry the district as the GOP looks to hold onto its slim majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.

But the district is far from a guarantee.

Incumbent Rep. John James, R-Mich., last won reelection in 2024 in a 51.1% to 45.0% victory over Democratic challenger Carl Marlinga, a judge and former prosecutor.

The cycle before that, James beat out Marlinga by a narrow 48.8% to 48.3% win in 2022.

James, who enjoyed the benefit of incumbency, announced he would vacate the seat and instead pursue a gubernatorial bid, calling it a way to secure Michigan’s prosperity for future generations.

"My family, like countless others, came to our great state for the better opportunities our manufacturing and automotive industries offered and to live the American dream," James said in a statement.

Bouchard is highlighting his time in the military as a member of the 82nd and the 101st Airborne Divisions. He was deployed to Iraq as well as the U.S. southern border. Like James, who also has a military background, Bouchard was awarded a Bronze Star for his service with the joint task force against ISIS.

Bouchard, a political newcomer who hasn’t held office previously, is pitching himself as a continued part of the country's shift away from the direction of the previous administration.

"Under President Trump, I led missions on the southern border; back then we got the job done. But on day one, Joe Biden shut us all down; he opened the border," Bouchard said in a campaign video.

"Human trafficking, drug smuggling, known terrorists walked right in," he continued. "The Army taught me that weak leadership has consequences and I’m ready to lead America back."

On his website, Bouchard has highlighted fostering American manufacturing, finishing the southern border wall and increasing parental participation in education systems.

Trump issued an endorsement of Bouchard in a post to Truth Social earlier this year.

"A third-generation Michigander, brave U.S. Army veteran and Bronze Star recipient Mike has served his state and nation with distinction and will bring that same fighting spirit to the U.S. Congress," Trump wrote.

"Mike Bouchard has my complete and total endorsement to be the next representative from Michigan’s 10th congressional district," he added.

Notably, Bouchard has also attracted endorsements from other key congressional figures, such as U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., and GOP Conference Chair Lisa McClain, R-Mich.

Having cleared the Republican primary, Bouchard will head to the Nov. 3 general election.

It wouldn't be the college football offseason without some spirited debate over the quality of different conferences. Not only has this offseason not been any different, it might feature more debate than a typical year.

For most of the past decade, the SEC has been the unquestioned leader in the sport, thanks to Nick Saban's Alabama dynasty and the consistent excellence of Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs teams. But for three years running, the SEC has not been able to reach the National Championship game, let alone win one.

Instead, the Big Ten has staked its claim as the best in college football. Michigan won in 2023-2024, Ohio State in 2024-2025, and in a stunning 16-0 season, Indiana steamrolled its way to a title in 2025-2026. Three in a row, and arguably the top two teams heading into 2026-2027 are Ohio State and Oregon. Perhaps even worse, there's a case to be made that Notre Dame and Miami might be bigger threats to the Big Ten's dominance this year than Georgia or Texas.

PERCEPTION IS REALITY, AND THE SEC NEEDS TO START WINNING AGAIN BEFORE IT CONTINUES TO PUFF OUT ITS CHEST

For Big Ten fans or former coaches, this recent run of success has created an opportunity to, shall we say, gloat over the SEC's apparent decline. And former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and Colin Cowherd are no exception.

Cowherd asked Meyer when he started to believe that Big Ten rosters and talent had caught up to the SEC, which he explained happened towards the end of his career at Ohio State. But he went further, saying it's not just the athleticism and depth where the Big Ten's caught up. It's everything.

"But I'm gonna add this, Colin, also the Big Ten stadiums are very SEC like," Meyer said. "They were not. When I was hired in 2012, it wasn't even close, man. The teams weren't close. The venues weren't close. The passion of the fans wasn't close, it's caught up. And like you said, last year it bypassed the SEC."

It's impossible to doubt the passion and support SEC fans bring to their teams, from intimidating night games at Death Valley in Baton Rouge to The Swamp, Neyland Stadium against a big opponent, Texas A&M's 12th Man in College Station, Alabama, Oklahoma, Williams-Brice Stadium, Auburn, Ole Miss, the cowbells at Mississippi State and Georgia's raucous student section.

But the Big Ten has developed plenty of impressive atmospheres too, with Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and Nebraska leading the way. Others like Washington, Iowa and Illinois frequently fly under the radar as tough places to play, and home games in Bloomington are going to reach a whole new level now that the Hoosiers are defending champs. USC in its heyday was a very difficult place to play, and will have several opportunities for big home games this year with the Ducks and Buckeyes coming to town.

At the end of the day, both conferences feature great fanbases, historic, iconic venues, outstanding crowd atmospheres and elite, blue blood programs. And that's what makes college football so great, what you prefer or think is superior is up to you. Thankfully, we're spoiled for choice.

Republican voters in Kansas chose their nominee Tuesday in one of the year's highest-profile gubernatorial primaries.

Ty Masterson will face the Democratic nominee in the Nov. 3 general election to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly.

Republicans see the open-seat race as a prime opportunity to reclaim the governor's mansion after two terms under Kelly, while Democrats are hoping to defy the state's Republican lean and retain control of the office.

The Republican field featured several well-known statewide and legislative leaders, including Secretary of State Scott Schwab, Senate President Ty Masterson and Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt.

Rep. Wesley Bell, D-Mo., defeated the former congresswoman and Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member for the second time since 2024.

Bell ran as a pragmatic alternative to Bush, while still touting himself as a progressive to appeal to Democrats in Missouri's 1st Congressional District.

Before coming to Congress, Bell was a Ferguson, Missouri City Council member and a county prosecutor.

"When the disaster caused $1.6 billion in damages and took several lives, Wesley responded by hopping on a flight to Israel funded by Trump’s donors less than 90 days later," Bush posted on X last week, referring to a 2025 tornado that tore through part of St. Louis.

But those attacks failed to make enough of a dent in Bell's campaign.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson on Tuesday captured the Democratic nomination for governor in the crucial Great Lakes battleground state in the race to succeed term-limited Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Benson defeated Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, The Associated Press reported.

Michigan's top election official for the past eight years will now work to keep the governor's office in Democratic Party hands as Republicans aim to flip the seat.

Benson will face off in the general election against either Rep. John James or multi-millionaire businessman Perry Johnson, who are facing off for the GOP nomination.

A typical early morning DoorDash delivery in Jacksonville, North Carolina on Saturday went off the rails when a Range Rover that was stopped at a red light didn't move when the light turned green.

The 34-year-old delivery driver behind the SUV gave a friendly honk to get the show on the road so she could do her job and deliver an order. This didn’t sit well with the driver of the Range Rover.

They decided to repay the courtesy honk by following her as she made her delivery, then using a wooden bat to hit her upside the head. The bat to honk exchange rate seems weighted heavily in the bat's favor, on paper anyway.

The DoorDash driver says she was followed to her delivery. The Range Rover drove by as she conducted her business, but returned as she was walking back to her car, reports FOX 8.

She said it approached her, then the driver hit her in the head with a wooden bat. She was knocked out from the blow to the head.

Once the DoorDash driver regained consciousness, she drove herself like somewhat of a badass to the hospital. A bat-wielding Range Rover driver on the loose isn't what the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office would consider ideal.

They'd like a word with this person. Sheriff Chris Thomas said, "There does not appear to be a clear motive, the only one we have at this moment is possibly road rage, however that’s an assumption at this point."

It's a fair assumption given the DoorDash driver's version of events. But there could always be more to the story and there's a chance, even a slight one, that the Range Rover driver's version explains what actually took place.

This could all be a misunderstanding.

Comedians Dana Carvey and David Spade mocked the idea of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's pied-à-terre tax Sunday after the city published a searchable database of property owners.

"Well, Mamdani's going after billionaires in New York," Carvey mentioned on his "Fly on the Wall" podcast. "If you have a second home in New York, he wants you to pay more tax."

"Yeah. I think it was a bit of a stumble to post online all the people that have second homes and their addresses because, you know, you can't say after he says you should protest in the streets and then say that. I would be worried if I was a guy with that," Spade said.

"It was a little weird, but yeah," Carvey said.

The two continued to discuss Mamdani after Carvey made a mocking impression of the mayor threatening to drop a "tax bomb."

"He really bombed it. But it was a lot of famous people. It said their houses, and I was like, 'ohhh,'" Spade said, with Carvey agreeing it was "dangerous."

"I don't know. They got kids. I don't know about that," Spade added.

"Just tax them," Carvey remarked.

The pied-à-terre tax, endorsed by Mamdani and passed by the New York State Legislature in May, imposes an annual surcharge on certain high-value New York City homes worth more than $5 million that are not the owner's primary residence.

Months later, on July 24, New York City published a list of more than 900,000 properties in a "supplemental market value roll" without explaining that the vast majority of them would not be getting hit with the pied-à-terre tax.

When reached for comment by Fox News Digital, a city official clarified that this was not a pied-à-terre list but a state-mandated roll to be used by the Department of Finance (DOF) to examine which properties will be subjected to the property surcharge.

Since then, the DOF has clarified that it has sent surcharge letters to approximately 17,000 homeowners who could be subjected to the tax. Mamdani has said that citizens have until Sept. 18 to qualify for an exemption if they believe their properties do not apply to this tax.

Partnership for New York City CEO Steven Fulop previously lamented the release of the roll, pointing out that while the list was public information, it has been aggregated and framed in a way that targeted citizens.

"I don't know if it's an invitation to physical violence. … I would say that the way that it was framed was shaming people for being successful, which is a fundamental problem, and I do think highlighting that the majority of those residences are vacant for the majority of the year and giving their address is not productive from a safety standpoint," he told "America Reports" Thursday.

Fulop, a fellow Democrat, also added, "I think we started with the constructive outlook trying to find places to work together. It's becoming more and more difficult because [Mamdani] is focused on performative stuff as opposed to substantive policies that work with the business communities. I mean we're still trying, but it’s been difficult."

The defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers are making moves in the midst of an ongoing court battle between the NCAA and plaintiffs involved in a court case that could have major ramifications on the upcoming season.

Right now, athletes that started their college careers in 2022 are trying to decipher a District Court judge's ruling in Colorado that saw plaintiffs in the case being granted a preliminary injunction that grants players an additional season of eligibility.

On Tuesday, it was the Hoosiers that decided to take advantage of the current predicament that has colleges across the country scrambling to figure out if the move would be beneficial to their roster, by bringing back star defensive lineman Stephen Daley.

NCAA ROCKED BY COLORADO JUDGE'S 2022 CLASS ELIGIBILITY RULING THAT COULD RESHAPE COLLEGE SPORTS THIS YEAR

In the meantime, while the NCAA appeals the ruling from Judge Sweeney, schools like Indiana are either adding players to their roster that competed last season, or inquiring who they could possibly bring back to the team for the upcoming season.

After being injured following the Big Ten championship game last year, landing awkwardly on his leg while celebrating the win over Ohio State, Stephen Daley was not healthy enough for the 2026 NFL Draft after leading the conference and team with 19 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.

So, being that he had already played four seasons without taking a redshirt, the former transfer decided to get medically cleared by the Indiana medical staff and use the recent ruling in a Colorado district court to return for one more season.

Now, the problem for college programs across the country is that the NCAA is currently appealing the case, with Chief Legal Officer Scott Bearby trying to provide guidance to member schools on a daily basis regarding what is actually allowed right now, compared to what could happen if the organization were to win a "stay" on appeal.

"If the judge denies our motion for a stay, the NCAA will immediately ask the Tenth Circuit to enter a stay pending approval, including a request of the Tenth Circuit for what is know as an "administrative stay", which is an order pausing the injunction temporarily while the court decides whether to pause it for the duration of our appeal.

"If any of our stay motions are granted, we will return to the status quo before Wisne, with the age-based eligibility rules being implemented as the membership intended."

The NCAA is essentially saying that if a school were to add a player to its roster during this period where it is legally allowed, that athlete would then be ruled ineligible if the court rules in their favor on appeal.

One of the most complicated times in college athletics history is due in large part to players across the country rightfully suing the NCAA over its implementation of the new "Five and Five" rule which gives athletes five years to play five seasons.

TED CRUZ URGES SENATE TO STAY IN WASHINGTON UNTIL PROTECT COLLEGE SPORTS ACT PASSES THIS WEEK

The arguments made in court centered on the idea that players who completed their fourth year of eligibility and would have been ineligible under the previous rule should have been grandfathered in because of how the entire process unfolded this summer.

Lawyers are going at the NCAA in a court of law, arguing that if the new five-and-five rule was being implemented, then athletes who exhausted their clock this past season under the old rule should be granted the same rights that players under the new guidelines would be entitled to.

So, when Judge Charlotte Sweeney of the U.S. District Court of Colorado granted a preliminary injunction that was class-wide and ordered the NCAA to create a blanket waiver that granted all athletes an additional year of eligibility for the upcoming year if they were part of the 2022 class, this created an avenue for schools to legally take advantage of.

On Tuesday, when asked how his football staff was determining whether they would potentially add players from the 2025 roster that technically had eligibility left because of the court ruling, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel noted the school was still inquiring.

"Yeah, we're in exploration. Some of the details and what it's all going to look like still is being worked through, but looking at those things."

But across the sport, football staffs have been working the phones to gauge whether it's worth the risk to bring back a player while not knowing if this will actually stick for the duration of this upcoming season.

Multiple staffers have indicated to OutKick-Fox News that this question is currently being discussed among compliance departments across college campuses. Also, what does a school do about roster spots.

As you can tell, this has been a pretty chaotic stretch, most notably in the basketball world, as more lawsuits continued to be filed at the state level. A plethora of players have been granted eligibility thanks to a court ruling, with more to come.

While conferences, along with the NCAA, are hoping that the "Protect College Sports Act" can make it through the Senate and onto the House floor, the confusion around the athletics world has only risen.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged the Senate to quickly pass legislation making daylight saving time permanent, arguing that ending the twice-yearly clock changes would improve public safety, boost the economy and benefit Americans' health.

Trump's push comes after the House of Representatives voted 308-117 to pass the Sunshine Protection Act, which would allow states to observe daylight saving time year-round.

Although the bill received bipartisan support in the House, it has yet to be taken up by the Senate, where its prospects remain uncertain amid skepticism from lawmakers in both parties.

"For many years, the vast Majority of Americans have asked to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, but no Administration has been able to get it done, until now," Trump posted on Truth Social.

"People are sick and tired of having to change their clocks twice a year," he continued. "It is foolish, inconvenient and, in some cases, very costly."

Support for the legislation has generally come from lawmakers representing coastal states, while opposition has been concentrated among lawmakers from the Midwest and agriculture-heavy states.

Trump argued that making daylight saving time permanent would strengthen the economy and provide Americans with an extra hour of evening daylight.

"For Cities and States with Watchtowers, and hard to reach places, it costs Millions of Dollars," he said.

Trump also argued that ending the twice-yearly clock changes would improve public health and reduce crime.

Trump has long called for ending the twice-yearly clock changes, and the White House urged lawmakers to support the Sunshine Protection Act in an internal memo sent to Capitol Hill last month, calling it a "popular, common-sense reform."

While nearly every state sets clocks ahead one hour in March before turning them back one hour in November, many have already passed legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent if Congress authorizes the change.

Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time.

An AP-NORC survey released in December found that only 12% of Americans support the current system of changing clocks twice a year. Nearly half opposed the practice, while 40% had no opinion.

Shannon Taylor won the Democratic primary Tuesday in Virginia's 1st Congressional District.

The victory sets up a Nov. 3 showdown between the Democrat nominee and longtime Republican Rep. Rob Wittman, who has been in Congress since 2007.

Although Republicans have long held the seat, Democrats hope that shifting suburban voting patterns around the blue enclave of Richmond will make the district more competitive for them.

2026 MIDTERMS: PRIMARIES, KEY RACES AND ELECTION RESULTS

Democrats in Virginia sought to redraw the congressional map this year. If adopted, Virginia's 1st Congressional District, and many others, would be significantly more favorable to Democrats. The map was ultimately struck down and is not being used in this year’s election, relieving pressure of Wittman’s seat being at risk.

The district remains "lean Republican," according to the Cook Political Report.

The Democratic primary to face Wittman in the fall featured a crowded seven-candidate field.

The candidates included Henrico Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor, former Justice Department official Salaam Bhatti, Army veteran Jason Knapp, attorney Mel Tull, environmental advocate Tim Cywinski, attorney Ericka Kopp and educator Elizabeth Beggs.

Democrats are targeting the district as part of their broader effort to flip control of the House, though the district spans Richmond's outer suburbs, Williamsburg and Virginia's Chesapeake Bay region and has traditionally favored Republicans.

Wittman has represented the district since 2007 and is seeking another term.

Virginia's congressional primaries were held in August rather than the state's traditional June schedule after litigation over new congressional maps delayed the nomination process.

Well, a U-15 game down in Brazil — which, from what I hear, is a nation quite big on soccer — may have found the solution.

According to The Sun, two clubs — Flamengo and Ceará — were in the midst of a Brazil Under-15 Cup match in Rio de Janeiro. That's when something not commonly seen in a children's soccer game happened.

It got interesting.

As Flamengo moved the ball to a defender, a very large parrot was suddenly more on top of him than any Ceará player (which means it's not going to be fun when the coach is going over video of this match).

That's hilarious and kind of terrifying at the same time.

That's one of those moments where I can absolutely believe the notion that all the dinosaurs turned into birds.

If pterodactyls were still cruising around the Earth, they would absolutely be dive-bombing 13- and 14-year-olds' soccer games, and it would look something like that.

You'd think a bird that lives in Brazil would be used to soccer games, seeing as they put soccer players on the money down there, but this one must've had its nest bulldozed to make way for a pitch or something, because it hates the beautiful game.

After terrorizing that one kid, the bird reportedly went after a few other teenage footballers to the point that the referee had to put the match on hold.

But once play resumed, the bird returned and again brought the game to a halt.

Against all odds, Flamengo overcame the multiple avian invasions to win the match 1-0.

The polls are now closed in Kansas, Missouri, and most of Michigan, three of the five states from coast-to-coast holding primary elections on Tuesday.

The biggest spotlight is on Michigan, where the high-stakes fight between the left-wing and the center-left establishment for the future of the Democratic Party is front-and-center.

Boosted by a string of victories this spring in mostly blue congressional districts across the country, the Democrats' ideological war moves to the Great Lakes battleground state, where progressive victories could reshape the party and endanger must-hold seats in the midterm elections.

Also at stake as Michigan, Kansas, Missouri join Virginia and Washington State in holding mid-summer primaries is President Donald Trump's immense clout over the GOP and the power of his endorsements in Republican nominating contests.

But taking top billing is Michigan's divisive and expensive Democratic Senate primary, which is seen as the biggest stage to date in the fierce fight for the future of the Democratic Party.

THE MIDTERM SENATE RACES THAT COULD FLIP THE BALANCE OF POWER IN CONGRESS

"This is ground zero in the battle for the future of the Democratic Party, pitting status quo corporate Democrats against shake up the system economic fighters, and we’ll see who wins," Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), a leading group on the left, told Fox News Digital.

The primary face-off pits Abdul El-Sayed, a former Wayne County Health Department director, against Rep. Haley Stevens, a more moderate candidate backed by the establishment. The race to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters, who is backing Stevens, is a must-hold for the Democrats and one of roughly a dozen Senate races from coast to coast that will determine if Republicans hold onto their slim Senate majority.

Matt Bennett, one of the leaders at the Third Way, a leading center-left Democratic organization, told Fox News Digital the Michigan showdown is "the first time the left is competing for a swing seat" and warned, "the significance is it could really put this seat in jeopardy."

El-Sayed, who, if elected, would make history as the nation's first Muslim senator, is an epidemiologist who unsuccessfully ran for governor as an insurgent candidate in 2018. He has made support for "Medicare-for-all" a major component of his campaign.

The far-left candidate has also called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and is a vocal critic of Israel amid its war with Hamas — even characterizing Israel's actions in Gaza as "genocide" against Palestinians.

MIKE ROGERS ARGUES ABDUL EL-SAYED IS 'A SPECIAL SAUCE OF CRAZY'

And El-Sayed, who is backed by top far-left leaders and teamed with progressive champions Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York on the Michigan campaign trail two weeks ago, and who served as a top surrogate on Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign, has vowed not to accept PAC donations.

Stevens, who flipped a GOP-held district in her 2018 election to Congress, is backed by top national and Michigan Democrats, including Peters, term-limited Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and longtime Senate Democratic Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer.

Schumer and the party establishment view Stevens as more electable than El-Sayed, who has sparked controversy with his past comments.

"I am the best Democrat to go forward. I am the only person in this race who has won tough primaries multiple times. You know, running with the Michigan grit, resilience and determination," Stevens told Fox News Digital on Sunday, as she teamed up with Peters on the campaign trail.

DEMOCRACY ’26: STAY UP TO DATE WITH THE FOX NEWS ELECTION HUB

Over $80 million has been spent on the primary showdown, making it the most expensive Democratic Senate nomination race in history. Much of the money has been shelled out by outside groups in support of Stevens and against El-Sayed. The biggest spending comes from United Democracy Project, a political action committee aligned with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

El-Sayed, who has repeatedly attacked Stevens over the massive infusion of AIPAC-linked money, told reporters on Sunday, "If you need $70 million to come in here and help get you elected, then the question has to be, are you actually electable on your own terms."

The winner will face off in the midterms against former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers, who is on a glidepath to win the GOP Senate nomination.

The Trump-backed Rogers, who lost the 2024 Senate election in Michigan by a razor-thin margin, said in a Fox News Digital interview that he doesn't care whom he faces off with in November.

"It doesn't matter to us. We've looked at both candidates. We feel confident we're going to beat either one of those candidates that come out of that race," Rogers highlighted.

And Rogers claimed, "They are very radical, and they are way too extreme for Michigan. I mean, Abdul, he has his own special sauce of crazy."

But Democrats are confident they can regroup after a combustible primary.

"Let's make sure that anyone but Mike Rogers gets to the United States Senate," Stevens told reporters on Sunday. "After the primary, you're going to see a united Democratic Party. You are going to see us going full force, full fledged ahead."

And El-Sayed told Fox News Digital, "I think we all understand the risk of Donald Trump. We all understand the risk of Mike Rogers."

The left-wing versus establishment battle is also playing out in Michigan's 7th Congressional District, a key Republican-controlled swing seat race that's among roughly two-dozen that will impact whether the GOP holds onto its fragile House majority.

William Lawrence, a co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, which advocates for political action to tackle climate change, is on the rise against two more moderate Democrats. Lawrence is backed by Sanders and El-Sayed, as well as some top progressive groups. The primary winner will face GOP Rep. Tom Barrett in the general election.

The party civil war is also on display in Michigan's deep blue 13th Congressional District.

Rep. Shri Thanedar, who is supported by top House Democratic leaders, is being challenged by state Rep. Donovan McKinney, who is backed by Sanders, El-Sayed, and "Squad" members Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Summer Lee of Pennsylvania.

And the ideological warfare is also front-and-center in Missouri, in the state's St. Louis-based and heavily Democratic 1st Congressional District.

Rep. Wesley Bell is facing off in a rematch against former Rep. Cori Bush, a Squad member who Bell ousted in the 2024 primary.

Trump's endorsements are getting tested in two statewide showdowns on Tuesday, in Michigan and Kansas.

The president is backing Rep. John James in Michigan's GOP gubernatorial primary. James, a West Point graduate and one-time Republican rising star, is facing off against multi-millionaire businessman Perry Johnson, a former gubernatorial and presidential candidate.

The winner will take on likely Democratic nominee and current Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, in the race to succeed Whitmer.

In Kansas, Trump is supporting state Senate President Ty Masterson in a crowded field of Republican gubernatorial contenders.

Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly is term-limited, which makes the race to succeed her a top flip opportunity for the GOP.

In Washington State, the marquee primary showdown is in the state's 3rd Congressional District, where Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, a former auto shop co-owner, is facing a crowded field of challengers from both parties.

Washington state has a top-two primary system in which all candidates, regardless of party, compete on the same ballot and the two highest vote-getters move on to the general election.

The race is another crucial House showdown that may decide the chamber's majority.

In Virginia, voters head to the polls to cast ballots in Senate primaries and in a handful of House primaries in extremely competitive districts that may impact the balance of power on Capitol Hill.

Cruises thrown into chaos as drought strands ships, leaves passengers scrambling

Cruise passengers in certain locations have had their vacations disrupted due to record-low water levels on high-traffic rivers in Europe, stranding vessels and switching up itineraries.

The continent has experienced "above-average temperatures with an extensive and prolonged heatwave" in the first half of July, with drought conditions still persisting, according to the European Drought Observatory (EDO)'s website.

The EDO's latest map shows drought stretching across much of Central and Western Europe, with the most severe "alert" conditions concentrated in parts of France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Romania and the Balkans.

The drought has impacted two of Europe's major river routes — the Danube and the Rhine.

Hungary's Paks Nuclear Power Plant reported July 27 that the Danube's lowest water level at Paks — minus 42 inches — broke all previous records.

Meanwhile, images of the Rhine show exposed sandbars and dried-up riverbanks as ships traveled through a shrunken waterway.

Several river cruise operators, including Avalon Waterways and AmaWaterways, have warned that low water levels on parts of both rivers may alter itineraries.

The Rhine originates in the Swiss Alps and flows to the North Sea. The river goes through or along the borders of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Both rivers are popular cruise routes, so the drought has disrupted travel for passengers. Some tourists have been bussed to other ships farther down the river.

One user writing on a social media thread expressed concern about her family members' trip on the Danube and Rhine rivers.

Lesnar appeared on "The Pat McAfee Show," days after losing to Oba Femi in a Hell in a Cell match at SummerSlam.

"I’m here today to do this interview to let the world and everybody know that I am retired, and I wanted to say a big thank you to everybody," Lesnar said. "Saturday was a very emotional day for me and kinda weird because I did … when Oba Femi slammed me at WrestleMania, I was like, I can’t do this again. I lost. I think I’m done.

"But the business and I still had some fuel in the tank. But Saturday for Brock Lesnar — that’s it. That’s it for me in the squared circle and for everything else."

Authorities have identified a teen suspect allegedly involved in a double homicide where a Citadel cadet and his childhood friend were gunned down in Florida.

The DeLand Police Department announced they have secured an arrest warrant for a 17-year-old suspect on two counts of second-degree murder.

Dustin Rose, 19, and Samson Campbell, 18, were last seen on surveillance video walking on a sidewalk around 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 28.

One of the reported reasons behind Belichick’s snub as a first-ballot Hall of Famer involved his role in the infamous Spygate and Deflategate controversies that placed stains on his Patriots tenure.

With Deflategate specifically, Brady was found guilty of knowing about the underinflated footballs used in the 45-7 AFC Championship Game victory over the Indianapolis Colts in 2015, leading to a four-game suspension.

If voters have the same mindset they did with Belichick, is it a crazy thought that Brady could have to wait his turn to get into the Hall like his legendary coach?

To put it nicely, it would be completely insane if Brady were not a first-ballot entry.

Brady has the most Super Bowl rings ever won by an individual player in NFL history, tallying seven over his career — six with the Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards (89,214), pass completions (7,753) and passing touchdowns (649).

After watching Patriots practice, Amendola got to interact and watch some active service members go through USAA’s Salute to Service NFL Boot Camp, the first event of its kind between the team and USAA.

Service members at Naval Submarine Base New London, Naval Station Newport, Joint Base Cape Cod and Hanscom Air Force Base were coached by Amendola as they competed in drills similar to those NFL coaches use to evaluate players, including the 40-yard dash, broad jump, three-cone shuttle and more.

Amendola saw these service members truly competing, even mentioning that one ran a 4.51 40-yard dash, which is quite fast.

"These guys are going really hard. They’re having a blast. You can tell they’re smiling from ear to ear and really having fun. It’s great to have them out here — they do so much for our country. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. So, just getting out here, spreading the love of the game, and having some fun doing it. It’s awesome to be a part of," Amendola said.

"I have a huge appreciation for the military. I was actually going to go to the military if I didn’t get a scholarship to go play football. …It’s awesome to hear their stories, their day-to-day lives," Amendola added.

Taylor Sheridan gives actors what Zoe Saldaña says are one of two choices on set.

The "Lioness" star offered a rare glimpse into what it's like working with the prolific writer, director and producer, saying his standards challenge every actor who steps onto one of his sets.

"So working with him is a challenge in the sense that he does raise the bar," Saldaña told People magazine. "And you have one of two choices. You either accept the challenge and make sure that you don't f--- up... or you quit."

"And I like being challenged," she added. "I really do."

Saldaña's comments come as Sheridan continues to build one of television's biggest entertainment empires with hit series including "Yellowstone," "Lioness," "Landman," "Tulsa King," "Mayor of Kingstown" and the "Yellowstone" prequels. His challenging scripts and hands-on approach have earned him a reputation for pushing actors to elevate their performances.

For Saldaña, who stars as CIA operative Joe McNamara in Paramount+'s "Lioness," those expectations begin long before cameras start rolling.

Speaking recently with USA TODAY, the Oscar-winning actress recalled Sheridan personally calling her ahead of season three to prepare her for the physically demanding role.

"He said, 'I definitely want you to build more muscle. I want Joe to be just a machine,'" Saldaña told the outlet.

The actress said she immediately hired a private trainer to help transform into the battle-hardened CIA operative before filming began.

Sheridan's presence on set can also be intimidating.

"Sheridan is an intimidating cat," Saldaña told USA TODAY. "I'm not going to lie. And he comes in so serious. It raises the bar for the rest of us."

Despite his demanding reputation, Saldaña told People magazine the "Yellowstone" creator is equally committed to collaborating with actors who come prepared.

"It's actually great," she said of working directly with Sheridan. "When you work with him is when you realize how passionate he is about actors and about acting. I think it is his first love when it comes to the arts."

"He's an incredibly smart person. He's very curious about government affairs, and he seeks out information and education based on that curiosity," Saldaña continued. "And then he writes these incredibly elaborate shows that end up really educating us as well."

According to Saldaña, Kidman has become one of her closest collaborators on the series.

The actresses told People they have developed a routine whenever Sheridan's complex scripts leave them searching for answers.

"We tag team finding out where Taylor is and seeing if he's going to call us back because, when we need him, it's always having to do with the work," Saldaña said.

After spending "five or ten minutes" catching up every morning, the pair head to hair and makeup before turning their attention to the day's scenes, often tracking Sheridan down between takes to discuss dialogue that "don't feel like they're making any sense."

For Saldaña, that teamwork has become one of the highlights of making the series.

"It's wonderful because I respect her so much," she told People of Kidman. "Nicole... I admire her. She's an incredibly talented woman, but what she is first and foremost, what I love the most, is she's a mother. She's a daughter. She's a sister. She's a friend."

"And she plays all of those roles beautifully," Saldaña continued. "And she does it with so much love and unconditional support. That's admirable. So everything about working with Nicole has been true joy."

Kidman returned the compliment.

The actresses' partnership has become especially valuable because of Sheridan's military- and intelligence-heavy scripts, which require extensive preparation before filming.

Earlier this year, Kidman revealed she relies on researchers to help her understand the show's dense CIA terminology.

After months of delay, the race for Virginia’s Senate seat is now set, with a Republican contender emerging to enter a three-way fight in the quest to oust longtime Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va.

Bert Mizusawa clinched the Republican nomination for Senate in the Old Dominion against two other hopefuls eyeing Warner’s seat and a chance for power in a state that hasn’t sent a Republican to the upper chamber in more than two decades.

Warner is a formidable opponent, having won his last election by roughly 12 points and commanding a position of power on the Senate Intelligence Committee. It’s also a race that is not on the national Republican map for flip opportunities.

Mizusawa isn’t alone in his bid to unseat Warner, who is running for a fourth term in the upper chamber.

Investment banker and former reality TV contestant Mark Moran is running a third-party independent campaign after opting to dump his initial push against Warner as a Democrat.

Moran made headlines earlier this year when he revealed he wanted to get caught by the prediction market platform Kalshi for betting on himself in his campaign. Moran was fined over $6,000 after refusing to strike a deal with Kalshi.

He told Fox News Digital at the time his decision to bet on himself was effectively free marketing for his campaign.

"I know that they're going to come after me when I place a bet on myself. So, I do that knowing that, for the low price of about $100, I can get more attention on me, as evidenced by your calling me, than anything else that I could do with my ideas as a politician," Moran said.

"Because we don't live in a constitutional republic where ideas can win. We live in one owned by the donor class."

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott effectively pauses new data center projects pending statewide grid audit

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered state regulators to audit pending data center projects seeking connections to the state's electric grid, a move ERCOT says effectively pauses those projects as Texas grapples with soaring electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Abbott on Monday directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to review pending data center projects and deny grid connection requests for facilities that fail to meet state requirements.

ERCOT told Fox News Digital the governor's directive "effectively pauses all data center projects."

"ERCOT is reviewing Governor Abbott's letter concerning data centers and will work with the Public Utility Commission of Texas to implement the Governor's directive, including postponement of the Batch Zero transmission planning study," the grid operator said in a statement.

BLANCHE URGED TO INVESTIGATE ALLEGED FOREIGN INFLUENCE IN FIGHT AGAINST DATA CENTERS

The move comes as Texas sees a surge in demand from artificial intelligence and cloud computing facilities. ERCOT told Fox News Digital that about 90% of the 474 gigawatts of projected large-load interconnection requests currently under review are from data centers — more than five times the state's record peak electricity demand.

"Our top priority is to protect Texans' safety and quality of life," Abbott said in a statement, according to Axios. "Texans must come first."

As part of the review, Abbott directed regulators to gather additional information from companies seeking grid connections, including whether facilities plan to generate some of their own electricity, as well as their projected annual and peak electricity demand, water consumption and water sources.

The directive follows Abbott's recent push to tighten oversight of the rapidly expanding data center industry. Last week, he said AI data centers looking to build in Texas should bring their own power, reuse their own water and lower electricity costs for residents.

Texas has become one of the nation's largest hubs for data center development, thanks in part to generous tax incentives. The Texas Tribune previously reported the state provides more than $1 billion annually in tax breaks for qualifying projects.

Public Utility Commission of Texas Chairman Thomas Gleeson said the agency is working with ERCOT to implement Abbott's directive.

"We appreciate Gov. Abbott's directive and will continue to work closely with ERCOT to ensure these requirements, along with those laid out in our July 17, 2026, letter to Gov. Abbott, are fully carried out on behalf of the people of Texas," Gleeson said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Fox News Digital also reached out to Abbott's office and the Data Center Coalition for comment.

Man arrested at Trump golf course ahead of president’s visit allegedly had weapons cache

A California man was arrested Sunday at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes after allegedly monitoring security planning activities days before the president’s visit, and was later found with a cache of weapons and body armor, authorities said.

Jeanine John Taele, 38, of Downey, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to four criminal charges stemming from his arrest outside the golf course days before President Donald Trump's scheduled visit.

Trump arrived in Los Angeles late Tuesday for a Republican National Committee fundraiser.

A Los Angeles County judge set Taele's bail at $250,000, ordered him not to possess any weapons, barred him from Trump National Golf Club and prohibited him from leaving California while the case is pending.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 26, for a preliminary hearing setting and bail review.

TWO YEARS AFTER BUTLER, THREATS AGAINST TRUMP KEEP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT IN SHARP FOCUS

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the investigation began on Sunday, when plainclothes federal agents spotted Taele walking the grounds of Trump National Golf Club while taking photographs and videos and appearing to monitor security-planning activities.

Deputies from the Lomita Sheriff's Station responded around 3:30 p.m. and contacted Taele. During a pat-down, deputies allegedly recovered a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition from Taele's pants pocket.

Authorities then searched his vehicle, which was parked in the golf course parking lot, and recovered a loaded pistol with a round in the chamber, along with another loaded magazine containing hollow-point ammunition.

Taele was initially arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm and possessing prohibited ammunition. Prosecutors later charged him with receiving a large-capacity magazine, carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle and possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun.

The discovery prompted detectives with the Sheriff's Department's Major Crimes Bureau assigned to the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force to obtain a search warrant for Taele's Downey home.

Investigators said they recovered an illegally modified AR-platform rifle; a 1911 .45-caliber pistol; an AR-platform upper receiver; body armor; high-capacity magazines; bulk pistol and rifle ammunition; two radio signal devices; and multiple notebooks containing what authorities described as "concerning statements."

Separately, prosecutors also charged Taele with second-degree robbery in connection with an alleged Nov. 4, 2025, incident that was already under investigation by the El Segundo Police Department before Sunday's arrest at the golf course.

The investigation is being conducted jointly by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and the U.S. Secret Service. Officials said additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.

Authorities said they have identified no credible threat to the surrounding community but noted the investigation remains active.

The FBI's Los Angeles Field Office confirmed to Fox News Digital that the bureau's Joint Terrorism Task Force is continuing to investigate the case with the U.S. Secret Service and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department but declined to comment further because the investigation remains ongoing.
