Layne Staley, frontman of grunge rock giants Alice In Chains, died 24 years ago today at his Seattle, WA apartment from a drug overdose at 34 years old. It was on the 8th anniversary of the death of fellow grunge luminary Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. Like Cobain, Staley's public battles with addiction and subsequent misconceptions about his life have become interwoven with his legacy, at times overshadowing the music. Now, Staley's family hopes to bring the focus back to the singer's music and art contributions with This Angry Pen of Mine: Recovering the Journals of Layne Staley, which reproduces some of the musician's journal entries, lyric sheets, and much more [...]

In my 20+ years of running Geeks Of Doom, I don't think I've ever done a Book Recommendations/Reading List specifially for Spring. Usually books that are released during the Winter and Spring seasons get folded into Summer or Fall Reading Lists and/or Gift Guides. But this year, I was feeling quite inspired and actually had the time to put something together for Spring.

Below are some titles — with accompanying links to the print, ebooks, and audiobooks editions — that I am personally looking forward to checking out this Spring, most of which land in the science fiction, fantasy, horror, roleplaying, historical fiction, and non-fiction categories and their subgenres. The first list of books is listed in order of release date from January 2026 through April 2026. After this main list, I’ve included some older titles to read before their new movie/TV adaptations come out. Finally, you’ll find a bonus section featuring themed Cookbooks, Craftbooks, Guides, Coloring Books, Sourcebooks, Card Sets/Games, Journals, and Accessories that are perfect companions for your Spring reading adventures, and also make great gifts.

So this week sees the release of a series of books from my youth, although there is a typo in there, as it states it has been forty years since the series began. That has to be incorrect, as there is no way I am that old; I am still a teenager, I swear! But Dragonlance Legends captures all three of the books in one beautiful tome for new readers to enjoy and old-timers like me to walk down memory lane. If you were entertained by the first three books in the Dragonlance Chronicles collection, you will love this deep dive into one of the greatest characters in the series. I speak, of course, of Raistlin. But surprisingly enough, we read as his brother Caramon relentlessly tries to save his sibling from the very power he craves [...]

The new year brought an end to popular Netflix series Stranger Things, after a successful 10-year run. While grading exam papers one day in 1930, J.R.R. Tolkien jotted down what would became one of the most famous literary opening lines of all time: "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." Inspired by Norse mythology and fairy stories, the then-professor spun a tale from that single line that became his first published work, 1937's The Hobbit, which introduced the masses to his fantasy world of Middle-earth.

Well met and happy holidays, dear readers! It is time again for my annual dive into what Dungeons & Dragons items are new and necessary for this gift-giving season. Alright, maybe not necessary, but close to it, right? I, personally, could not go a year without giving a new gaming guide or set of dice to a friend or family member and it quite literally boggles my mind that everyone is not afflicted with this same addiction. But, as I get older, I see that many people just do not enjoy life the way some of us do, so their loss, I suppose.

Below this paragraph of rambling sentences is a not-even-close-to-complete list of new gaming-related merchandise that I found interesting or wondrous. We have gotten new releases for game guides, new adventures, and new accessories that will meet the needs of many. I hope you find something that appeals to you in here, as I did. I own most of these, but only recently saw a couple of the ones in the quick picks, so I am waiting to see if I receive them as gifts prior to buying anything else. My wife and I have a deal where we cannot buy from certain categories after Halloween, to allow the other to pick some awesome gifts out without fear of duplicates. But enough of my musings, here are my choices for this year's D&D or RPG products I would recommend [...]

Social media is all abuzz right now with accolades for writer/director Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. And with good reason: The new film, starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth, is a visually stunning masterpiece from the visionary filmmaker. Though the Del Toro's take is not entirely faithful to Mary Shelley's 1818 classic novel, his reimagining certainly captures the spirit of the original tale about a scientist's impetuous obsession with creating life from death. Now, Insight Editions has released Frankenstein: The Complete Screenplay: Written and Directed by Guillermo del Toro, a 240-page oversized hardcover that reproduces the director's full shooting script [...]

Greetings, Doomers! Black Friday shopping started off as a huge annual sale on the day after Thanksgiving, then it slowly encroached upon Thanksgiving night, and now it seems like it's a week-long event. So to help you get in on some of those early sales, we present to you our 2025 Holiday Gift Guide!

Now, if I'm the one putting together the Holiday Gift Guide (and this year, I am), it's going to be book-centric, hence why you'll see a lot of pictures of books here. BUT, I've also included a lot of other items, such as collectibles, games, toys, movies/TV, action figures, housewares, coloring books, cookbooks, tarot cards, journals, and more. While the spotlight selections were all released in 2025, items listed under each "related/similar" section might also be from prior to 2025, as are the Buzzworthy Books (older titles that are getting new buzz this year).

So check out our expanded Holiday Gift Guide 2025: Books, Games, Collectibles & More for our favorite holiday gift picks for the people in your life [...]

DC Films has made several noble attempts over the years to revamp their cinematic universe (DCU) in what's become a decade-long struggle to compete with Marvel Studios' massively successful MCU. Controversy plagued 2017's Justice League, while recent franchise sequels -- Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023), and Joker: Folie à Deux (2024) -- all underperformed at the box office. But after the recent formation of DC Studios with filmmaker James Gunn as its co-CEO, things are starting to look up for the DCU. Gunn, the creative force behind the MCU's popular Guardians Of The Galaxy movies, wrote and directed this summer's Superman, a relaunch that proved to be both a box office success and a big hit with audiences. Now, Abrams Books is giving us a behind-the-scenes look at the superhero blockbuster with Superman: The Art and Making of the Film [...]

Before Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Ransom Riggs's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, there was Edward Gorey. Born in 1925, Gorey first achieved success as a commercial designer, providing covers and art for over 500 books in his lifetime. Beginning in 1953, he began writing and illustrating his own works, including one of his best-known titles, 1963's The Gashlycrumb Tinies, an illustrated alphabet book in which 26 children meet their untimely deaths. Both whimsical and macabre, Gorey's books featured his pen-and-ink drawings in Victorian and Edwardian settings with morbid outcomes, earning him the title of the "Granddaddy of Goth."

Given Gorey's penchant for blending elegance with the unsettling, it's only fitting that his 100th birthday is celebrated with Uneasy Elixirs: 50 Curious Cocktails Inspired by the Works of Edward Gorey, created in conjunction with the Gorey estate [...]

I didn't know reboots of cheesy '80s sword & sorcery B-movies were what I needed this year, but after recently seeing the new Red Sonja and now Deathstalker, it's clear that they absolutely are. The new Deathstalker enhances the fantastical elements of the 1983 original film, while lovingly and knowingly winking through its sillier aspects.

You don’t need to have seen the Roger Corman–produced original Deathstalker to enjoy this reboot, though if you have, you’ll definitely appreciate the new effort even more [...]

Well met, fellow readers! I am so happy to be able to talk to you about this wonderous new book from R. A. Salvatore entitled The Finest Edge of Twilight. I am a lifelong fan of the Companions of the Hall, having borne witness to their struggles and adventures for decades, starting with The Crystal Shard and progressing forward with each new release. There have been times, however, when life has played cruel tricks on me and I have not been as vigilant with consuming the newest releases in a timely fashion. So when I was offered the chance to read this early, I knew I was missing a few choice novels in the Salvatore collection. My fears were for naught, luckily, as this book needs little in the way of history since it begins a brand new chapter with a mostly new protagonist. Read on to find out more!

It was 176 years ago today that Edgar Allan Poe died under mysterious circumstances, with his reported last words being "Lord help my poor soul." And a poor soul he was. Though Poe is now a household name whose works are world renown, during his own lifetime he lived a difficult, impoverished existence, constantly struggling to earn a living and make a name for himself as a writer. What little success he did manage to achieve was often undercut by either his rivals or his own self-destructive ways. Even after death, he was the victim of defamation, which led to many misconceptions about the man that are still held til this day. Yet it was after his passing that chilling short stories like "The Black Cat," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Fall of the House of Usher," and "The Pit and the Pendulum," as well as the poem "The Raven," became ingrained in our pop culture, rightfully securing his legacy as the "Master of Macabre."

In Edgar Allan Poe: The Master of the Macabre, the first entry in Adams Media's Pocket Portraits series, author Levi Lionel Leland not only provides a concise biography of Poe, but also sets out to debunk some of those enduring rumors surrounding the great poet [...]

Dave3 and I just saw the new film Good Boy last night and here are my immediate thoughts about it. FYI - LOVED IT!!! If you’re able to, get out to see it in theaters and support indie horror.

Good Boy is a fantastic new indie horror movie filmed from the perspective of a dog. The movie follows Indy (played by Indy), a Nova Scotia Duck Toller Retriever, whose sickly owner Todd (Shane Jensen) moves them from his New York City apartment into his family’s rundown haunted rural home in a secluded woods. Once there, Indy not only witnesses the physical and mental deterioration of his beloved owner, but is also directly subjected to the menacing supernatural forces of the house.

But, "IS THE DOG OK?!?!?", you ask. The answer is YES!!!!!!! [...]

We just finished the Labor Day holiday, which marks the unofficial end of Summer here in the U.S., so now it's time to shift focus to the Fall, with all things cozy and spooky too. The Fall is also the best time for reading (in my humble opinion), especially since so many great titles are released this time of year. Compiling my list of Fall reading recommendations is my very favorite annual project here at Geeks of Doom. It is such great fun to research which books are coming out soon, as well as look back on what was released earlier in the year that I might have missed.

Below are some titles — with accompanying links to the print, ebooks, and audiobooks editions — that I am personally looking forward to this Fall, most of which land in the science fiction, fantasy, horror, roleplaying, historical fiction, and non-fiction categories and their subgenres. The first list is for Fall 2025 novels, which are presented here in order of release date starting with September 2025. After this main list, I've included some standout novels from earlier this year that you may have missed that would be appropriate to read this Fall, along with children's/YA offerings and non-fiction, like memoirs and knowledge-based books, from the entire year. Finally, you’ll find a bonus section featuring themed Cookbooks, Craftbooks, Guides, Coloring Books, Sourcebooks, Card Sets/Games, Journals, and Accessories that are perfect companions for your Fall reading adventures.

Non-spoiler first thoughts (mostly written in the car on the way home from the movie theater) on The Fantastic Four: First Steps:

Marvel Studios churned out an enjoyable film that does justice to these classic characters, making them all likable and competent. I love the film’s retro-futuristic look (not a cell phone in site) and color scheme. While this is the “first steps,” it’s not an origin story, with the groups’ superpowered circumstances summed up quickly at the start on the team’s anniversary. This allows the danger to present right away and the action to get going fast [...]

All things come full circle. This was a saying when I was younger and I can attest that it holds true even to this day. I was ever a fan of the Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft setting, loving that it was able to bridge worlds thanks to the ever-changing Mists. The original source material for the Ravenloft campaign was one that I consumed again and again, as well as the novels that followed. That said, I was happy to see a 5e release for the game that I have always loved. I was not prepared for a follow-up book that whisked me back to Barovia and Castle Ravenloft, but Ravenloft: Heir of Strahd did just that. Here are my thoughts on the book itself, keeping in mind I am a diehard fan of the setting, and this is just my take on the book release itself [...]

I had to look through the GoD archives to see how long it had been since I first discovered Ray Chou and the wonders he and his teams create. It all started with a little project from his company Mythopoeia (now called Mythworks) called Skies of Fire and I backed that one right off the bat, about ten years ago! In fact, it might have been one of my very first Kickstarter Spotlights! I have never, and I mean NEVER, been disappointed with anything this group has turned out. This article is all about their ongoing series Glow that has been funded purely through Kickstarter, but they even have a roleplaying game called Wildsea available! Who would have thought 40 years ago that I would be reviewing a book with which 14-year-old me was so enamored?
