Rochdale secured their place in the first round of the EFL Cup after prevailing in a penalty shoot-out following an entertaining draw with Tranmere.

Dale edged the shoot-out 2-1 after Ryan East and Zain Silcott-Duberry cancelled out fine finishes from Charlie Whitaker and Jordan Davies during normal time.

A closer analysis of what happened

Tranmere made the perfect start, taking the lead inside five minutes when Whitaker raced on to Tom Conlon's incisive through ball before delicately lifting his finish over the advancing Nils Ramming to hand Darrell Clarke's side an early advantage.

Their lead lasted only six minutes, however, as East reacted quickest after a goalmouth scramble to fire home from close range and restore parity.

Rochdale looked the stronger side after the interval and threatened more regularly before Davies restored Tranmere's lead on the hour with a superb half-volley that flew into the bottom left corner.

Dale responded impressively once again and substitute Silcott-Duberry levelled with five minutes remaining, turning East's corner in at the back post beyond Harrison Male.

Ramming then produced an outstanding save to deny Davies deep into stoppage time before Jacob Slater volleyed narrowly wide, sending the contest to penalties.

Tranmere missed four successive spot-kicks, with debutant Courtney Baker-Richardson blazing over to confirm Rochdale's place in the next round.

They have signed winger Luke Molyneux from Doncaster Rovers for an undisclosed fee.

Molyneux, 28, joins having provided 40 goals and 37 assists for Doncaster in 209 appearances for the club.

Having started his career with Sunderland and later appearing for Hartlepool United, Molyneux joined Doncaster in 2022 and won the League Two title in the 2024-25 season.

Salford City will be looking to go one better this season after they reached the League Two play-off final losing to Notts County.

Molyneux told the Salford City website

"I'm just looking forward to getting started, implement what the gaffer wants, his style of play is going to be something new and I'm looking forward to it."

The start of a busy few weeks for the band from M24

The Courteeners headlined the Saturday at Tramlines 2026

The band arrived to a wall of cheers, chants of “Liam, Liam, Liam!” and plenty of anticipation, opening with “Sweet Surrender” from their latest album, a collaboration with Brooke Combe. There was no appearance from Combe, who was performing at Tramlines the following day, but the band more than did the song justice.

That was followed by fan favourites “Are You In Love With a Notion?” and “Cavorting”, the latter sending the crowd into overdrive. It was a cracking start to the set.

Bide Your Time set the crowds mind back to those early gigs in Manchester at Academy and Manchester Central.

The highlight though was the always euphoric Not Nineteen Forever.

The set finished with What Took You So Long and the usual short cover of Tomorrow by James.

Overall, it was a fantastic performance. The setlist had been given something of a shake-up, while Liam Fray’s stage presence remained as commanding as ever. The Courteeners have a knack for putting on a brilliant show in Sheffield, whether they are playing a festival stage or a more intimate venue.

The club returned to pre-season training last week, with Jack Grealish among the players reporting for duty.

But any immediate hopes of seeing the 30-year-old back in a City shirt were dashed on Tuesday night when he was left off the plane for the club’s 11-day tour of Hong Kong and Seoul.

Grealish is understood to be continuing his recovery from the foot injury that ended his season in January while on loan at Everton, where he had begun to rediscover something close to his best form.

For now, it remains too early to say what the future holds for the midfielder.

The worst timing for an injury

The injury brought an abrupt end not only to his spell at Hill Dickinson Stadium but also to his outside hopes of forcing his way into England’s World Cup squad.

Having appeared to fall out of favour under former manager Pep Guardiola, Grealish is now back at City with just 12 months remaining on his contract and little indication that he will be offered fresh terms on his reported £300,000-a-week wages.

However, fans have told local media that many of those warned their season tickets could be revoked are among the club's most loyal supporters, with many insisting they have done nothing wrong

Those under investigation have had restrictions placed on their online accounts, preventing them from buying or transferring tickets.

What's the next step for these fans?

Supporters whose accounts have been flagged have been invited to submit evidence if they believe they have been wrongly identified.

United have not revoked any season tickets at this stage, with an independent appeals panel set to review each case before the club's Premier League campaign begins on 22 August.

Andy Thompson, a season ticket holder, told us: "I am appealing but don't know if it's worth it. Do I want to get treated like this?"

However, supporters such as Andy say they have not been told exactly what they are accused of. They argue the lack of detail leaves them feeling as though they are being asked to defend themselves without knowing the allegations, with the uncertainty causing considerable anxiety.

Sunlight glinted off beer cups and bucket hats as 80,000 fans poured into Heaton Park for what will be remembered as one of the most euphoric nights in Manchester’s musical history.

Oasis returned to their hometown for a long-anticipated show that felt less like a concert and more like a cultural homecoming. One that managed to unite generations, bridged divides, and reaffirmed the band’s unique place in the heart of the city.

Those who went into the bars across Manchester were treated to all the Oasis classics, from Live Forever and Roll With It, to Champagne Supernova and Wonderwall. It was only 12pm on Friday lunchtime at the time. It set the tone for a perfect weekend

An incredible 48 hours

Part of what made the evening so special was the mix of people. Millennials who had grown up with Morning Glory as the soundtrack to their school days stood shoulder to shoulder with teenagers experiencing Oasis live for the first time. Some were there because they remembered Knebworth.

Others had only known the band through vinyl reissues and YouTube. Lewis W told us: "As fans stand side by side with older millennials and Gen X-ers, the sentiment and feeling remain the same, this is a very important moment in time."

Even those that couldn't get tickets for either of the performances created an amazing atmosphere outside Heaton Park. Check out this wholesome rendition of Champagne Supernova involving those that had been celebrating in and around The Ostrich pub.

This time next year...

Reports suggest Oasis are preparing to announce another major UK tour for 2027, although nothing has been officially confirmed by the band. The leaked plans reportedly include a 12-night residency at Manchester's Etihad Stadium and a record-breaking six concerts at Knebworth, with tickets rumoured to go on sale later this summer or in early autumn.

Further dates in Europe, including Rome and Glasgow, have also been linked with the proposed tour, but for now the schedule remains based on industry speculation rather than an official announcement

On a truly memorable night and before The Streets came opening act Antony Szmierek.

His modern blend of UK garage and spoken word is like watching a Skinner re-invention and the beginning of the time travel wheel you’re about to spin through. This was fantastic way to start the evening's entertainment.

While their debut featured enduring tracks such as Turn The Page and Has It Come To This?, it was their second album that elevated Mike Skinner's songwriting into something distinctive. Blending sharp observation with an ambitious narrative, A Grand Don't Come For Free became a landmark of British, working-class storytelling, and hearing it brought to life in full only reinforced its lasting impact.

Now for the main event | A bus stop has rarely looked so inviting

Mike Skinner emerged from the shadows, pint in hand, leaning casually against the set as the opening moments unfolded, clearly relishing the return to one of his defining works. Twenty years on, it would be easy to assume time might have softened its impact, yet the opposite proved true.

There was a distinctly theatrical quality to the performance as Skinner slipped effortlessly back into character, swirling his drink while conveying the financial frustrations at the heart of opening track It Was Supposed To Be Easy. His delivery was as convincing and engaging as ever, drawing the audience straight back into the album's world.

Following the celebration of that 2006 album, the evolution of The Streets is clear throughout the set. Classic favourites such as Turn The Page still land with enormous force, but alongside newer tracks like Who's Got The Bag, they reveal a project that continues to evolve rather than simply trade on nostalgia.

There is an infectious energy to it all. Leaving early never feels like an option because Skinner is rarely where you expect him to be. One moment he is crowd surfing with a child in tow, with health and safety seemingly forgotten, the next he has disappeared into the audience, turning the performance into something that extends well beyond the stage.

The Chris Lorenzo collaboration Take Me As I Am feels like a statement of where The Streets belong in this decade. It captures everything that makes the project feel relevant without chasing trends or reinventing itself for the sake of it. There is little need to dress it up with grand claims. It simply works, and it stands as one of the evening's highlights.

More than a month after Pep Guardiola announced he would step down as manager, Enzo Maresca has been appointed as his successor on a three-year contract.

Guardiola announced on 22 May that he would step down as City manager after a trophy-filled decade at the club, with Maresca quickly emerging as the leading candidate to take charge.

Discussions are understood to be at an advanced stage, with senior figures from both clubs working through a compensation agreement for Maresca.

The 46-year-old won both the Club World Cup and Conference League during his spell at Stamford Bridge before departing in January, and is now keen to return to City.

Chelsea believe they are entitled to compensation

This is under the terms of Maresca's exit, having handed him a contract running until 2029 before his departure just six months ago.

The London club have explored their legal position and expect a compensation package to be agreed, although the size of any payment, and when the matter will be settled, remains uncertain.

Maresca previously worked as one of Guardiola's assistants during City's Treble-winning 2022-23 campaign and also played an important role within the club's academy setup before joining the senior coaching staff.

A fantastic evening of fun and nostalgia at the Manchester Academy

Peter Hook & The Light rifled through the vaults to perform songs by Joy Division and New Order.

The career-spanning setlist included a special surprise: a rare outing for ‘World In Motion’, complete with a guest appearance from John Barnes, who delivered his famous rap in full.

The former Joy Division and New Order bassist was performing at Manchester Academy to mark the 50th anniversary of the Sex Pistols’ legendary show in the city, and welcomed the England great on stage for a rendition of the 1990 World Cup anthem.

Hook’s epic 35-song set took the audience on a chronological journey through his career, with Barnes joining him midway through for the track that became synonymous with England’s run to the semi-finals of Italia ’90 and remains New Order’s only Number One single.

Barnes wrote and performed the rap himself in 1990, with legend suggesting it was recorded in a single take.

Reflecting on the show afterwards, Hook wrote on Instagram that it had been a “truly memorable show”, while also thanking Rowetta and Buzzcocks for their appearances.

A celebration of Manchester’s music scene

The gig was organised to celebrate a key anniversary in the history of Manchester’s music scene. The Sex Pistols’ historic 1976 performance at the Lesser Free Trade Hill.

Hook was himself in attendance for that historic 1976 performance. Famously, he bought his first bass guitar the following day and went on to form Warsaw, the band that would later become Joy Division. A unique sliding doors for a so many people that was celebrated throughout this beautiful evening.

A first signing for the summer moves closer for Manchester United

They have reached an agreement with Italian side Atalanta for the signing of Brazil midfielder Ederson in a deal worth £35m (€40.5m).

The 26-year-old is set to sign a four-year contract at Old Trafford, with the club holding the option to extend it by a further year.

Ederson is still to undergo a medical, although sources indicate the transfer is expected to be finalised in early July, ahead of United's return for pre-season training.

He would become the club's first signing since Michael Carrick was appointed permanent head coach last month.

The agreement also includes a further £3.9m (€4.5m) in performance-related add-ons.

It is expected to be the first of potentially three midfield arrivals this summer as Carrick looks to reshape his squad.

Replacement for Casemiro?

United have made central midfield a priority following the departure of fellow Brazilian Casemiro, whose contract expires at the end of June.

Ederson, who has won three caps for Brazil, was included in the nation's provisional 55-man World Cup squad but did not make Carlo Ancelotti's final selection.

United also retain an interest in West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, although the relegated club are seeking a significant profit on the Portugal midfielder, having paid more than £40m to sign him from Southampton last summer.

Robert: I don't think City need to spend heavily on Anderson as a replacement for Silva. They already have Foden, who, with the right guidance under a new manager, could develop into that role. Perhaps they should look at a more affordable option such as Adam Wharton or Alex Scott, which could help avoid another situation like the one with Grealish.

Henry: First and foremost, we need the new manager to be announced. We also need to tie Rodri and Gvardiol down to new contracts as soon as possible. Beyond that, the squad could do with a combative, ball-winning midfielder and additional right-back cover for Nunes. If Savinho leaves, a replacement would be welcome, but the market for wingers looks particularly thin and bringing one in may prove difficult.

Tony: We need a promising young striker who can develop into the role, so Haaland does not have to shoulder the burden every week.

Dave: The priority should be strengthening the defence, particularly at both full-back positions, as well as bringing in a top-quality defensive midfielder.

Mo: The main issue that needs resolving is the 115 alleged charges. It is discussed constantly and it would be good to have clarity, even if that ultimately resulted in a points deduction. As for the squad, I do not think many additions are required. Perhaps a right-back, but beyond that Manchester City look in very good shape.

The 50-year-old guided the Hatters from the National League to League One, though their bid for promotion to the Championship this season ended in disappointment with defeat by Bolton Wanderers in the League One play-off final.

A former Stockport defender, Challinor returned to Edgeley Park as manager in November 2021 and recorded 144 victories from his 268 matches in charge.

As well as securing two promotions with County, he achieved five others during his managerial career, winning promotion with Colwyn Bay in his first season as a manager, three times with Fylde and once with Hartlepool.

One Stockport fan told us

Mark has a season ticket at Edgeley Park, and gave his thoughts on the news: "I've always said I didn't think he'd take us into the Championship, but a huge thank you for everything he's done. He's the man who guided us back into the Football League, and the 5-3 win at home to Bolton is quite possibly my favourite ever game at Edgeley Park."

"Other fans might think I'm mad, but it feels like the right time for both parties to move on, which is essentially what the club's statement says. It's been a very strange season."

Another fan added: "This man has gave us the best memories. I'll never forget that night against Stevenage."

Challinor told the Stockport County website

"What a journey it's been. An amazing five years that have gone as I would have hoped, and probably beyond what I expected.

"Five seasons is a long time in football management at any level, and deciding to step away from the club at this moment has been incredibly tough, especially on the back of the play-off final outcome. My family and I have put everything into County and it has become our lives over this period, but the timing feels right."

"Five years on, the achievements speak for themselves. We have reached at least the play-offs every season, won two league titles and broken so many records along the way. Dave has played a huge role in transforming the club and helping us build foundations for the future."

This is not, typically, a rock and roll venue. The vast space on the edge of town is more usually home to immersive theatre, large-scale installation art and high-concept performance, the type of place where you’re encouraged to contemplate.

The Pixies were here to make sure nobody contemplates anything for too long with their brand of famously snappy, anti-fluff tunes.

The gig took place when it was also absolutely sweltering

Manchester delivered one of its rare heatwaves, and the crowd, a beautifully democratic mix of grey-haired devotees and twenty-somethings for whom the Pixies are already mythology, are making the best of it, beer in hand, vintage tees already wrought sweaty.

Before the main act arrived, support came GANS, a Black Country electro-prog outfit, or at least the closest possible description of a group that seem determined to evade categorisation altogether.

They arrive armed with a flautist, a saxophonist and a drummer moving with the energy of a coiled spring. In the sweltering May heat they charge through ‘Dirty Cowboy’ and ‘I Think I Like You’, songs that are genuinely catchy, genuinely strange and unlike almost anything else in Britain right now. One of the country’s most exciting new bands. Remember the name and get them onto your playlists before they explode into the mainstream.

Then The Pixies arrived and a good time was had by all

There was one reason why everyone was here. We once heard a musician tell us that Tbe Pixies are the average guitar bands favourite guitar band. I don't think this was an insult to anyone. More a comment on how many people idolise this band.

Trace almost any interesting alternative guitar band of the last 35 years back far enough and, sooner or later, you arrive at the Pixies. Nirvana said so. Radiohead said so. The quiet-loud dynamics, the surrealist lyrics, the sense that a perfect pop song and total disintegration could occupy the same three minutes without undermining one another. They did not invent alternative rock, but they may well have taught it how to walk.

Three of the original four are here. Black Francis still commands the room with minimal theatrical effort and enormous gravitational pull. Joey Santiago continues to deliver lead guitar lines that remain among rock’s most under-appreciated pleasures, while David Lovering is relentless and precise behind the kit. Original bassist Kim Deal, who departed in 2013, is represented by Emma Richardson, formerly of Band of Skulls, who joined in 2024 and has already made the role feel entirely her own.

The night ended with Into the White

There was like an atmospheric and seemingly endless, dry ice drifting across the stage as the song unfurled into something close to transcendence.

Then they were gone, an emotional farewell lingering in the muggy air long after the house lights return. It may yet prove to be the last time we see them, though we have heard that before.

There was likely be a few sore heads after this amazing night. It would all be worth it though.

We asked for the best bits, the worst bits and the key players that helped United finish 3rd in the Premier League.

Who's your player of the season and why?

Bruno Fernandes. An outstanding campaign from the captain, who has carried United through difficult periods and set the standard week after week. The individual accolades are richly deserved.

Who's your unsung hero and why?

Luke Shaw. In a season largely defined by United's attacking improvement after last summer's overhaul, Shaw has provided consistency and resilience. After years disrupted by injury, the 30-year-old became one of only five Premier League players to start all 38 matches. That alone speaks volumes about his importance.

What was your highlight of the season?

Beating City and Arsenal in consecutive weeks. Two incredible performances. Beating City in a derby was one thing but to then follow up that with a comeback win over Arsenal was very special. These wins were both huge signs that Carrick was going to have a hugely positive impact with the club.

What was the biggest disappointment?

The cup performances. If there was ever a season when United supporters needed a memorable run, this was it. Few moments felt more dispiriting than the third-round FA Cup defeat by Brighton at Old Trafford, a result that underlined the chaos of a miserable 40-match campaign. There was no permanent head coach and little sense of direction until Michael Carrick arrived. The praise he is receiving now is fully merited.

What needs to change this summer?

The midfield. United have delayed a proper rebuild in that area for far too long. Given the foundations established since January and the opportunity that now exists heading into next season, there can be no more hesitation. Whether the recruitment team gets this summer right may well define whether Carrick succeeds or falls short. Three high-quality midfield additions are required, at the very least.

What's your major hope for next season?

Sustainability. No-one should be talking about a Premier League title challenge just yet, but United must re-establish themselves as regular top-four contenders and avoid a repeat of the embarrassment of their last Champions League campaign in 2023-24. Strengthen the squad, continue developing a recognisable style of play, compete seriously for domestic silverware and secure a return to Europe's top competition.

A bad day at Wembley for Salford City

A record-breaking season for Salford City came to a cruel end after a defeat to Notts County.

Before the match, there was a great deal of optimism in and around Wembley. Salford fans were confident that they could win and gain promotion to League One for the first time in their history.

It was only a few months ago that the pair assumed control of the club after buying out the remaining shares held by the famed Class of ’92, who had played a central role in the Ammies’ rise from the depths of non-league football.

Four promotions in five seasons followed the initial investment by the former Manchester United quintet of Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.

What happened on the pitch in the first-half?

The sun-drenched contest in London produced little in the way of attacking quality during the opening 25 minutes, with neither side managing a shot on target before the first drinks break. Once play resumed, Notts needed little time to break the deadlock.

Goals from Alassana Jatta and Lucas Ness put the Magpies into a commanding lead at the break, with James Belshaw relatively untroubled.

In addition to those goals, it was Salford's inability to keep some of Notts County’s key attacking players quiet that cost them in the first half and ultimately, the whole match.

Salford did come out positively after the break

Ben Woodburn was introduced as a substitute, and Kallum Cesay was played through one-on-one in the opening minute, but Belshaw smothered the midfielder to deny him a third goal in this play-off campaign.

Woodburn also set up a chance for Ryan Graydon, but the Irishman's connection didn't have the power to beat Belshaw who made the save.

County further consolidated their victory with 20 minutes to go, when Jodi Jones arrived late in the box to slot home substitute Conor Grant's low cross across the box.

It will be another season in League Two for Salford City after they fell a single victory short of promotion, only weeks after finishing one point outside the automatic places.

Guardiola loses last game as City boss

Pep Guardiola's 593rd and final game in charge of Manchester City ended in an emotional Premier League defeat as Ollie Watkins scored twice for Aston Villa.

Guardiola, who will be remembered as one of the defining managers of his generation, confirmed on Friday he would step down at City after collecting 20 trophies during a remarkable decade at the club.

His final match began brightly as January signing Antoine Semenyo volleyed home the opener after a corner was flicked on at the near post, with the former Bournemouth forward taking his tally to 17 league goals in an outstanding campaign.

But Europa League winners Villa, inspired by the in-form Watkins, responded superbly after the interval.

England defender John Stones, making his final City appearance, was punished for a poor headed clearance as Watkins prodded in the equaliser moments after the restart.

The significance of the occasion was made very clear

Departing captain Bernardo Silva received a guard of honour when substituted by Guardiola, with both men visibly emotional as they embraced on the touchline.

Watkins completed the turnaround on the hour mark, racing through before calmly finishing past England team-mate James Trafford.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was awarded after a VAR review showed Ruben Dias had played him on.

Phil Foden thought he had rescued a dramatic late equaliser for City with a fierce finish that cannoned in off the crossbar, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside, leaving Guardiola slumped back in his seat in frustration.

The result confirmed Villa's fourth-place finish and ended any lingering hopes Bournemouth had of qualifying for the Champions League.

Bolton ease to victory over Stockport in play-off final

Bolton Wanderers sealed a return to the Championship for the first time since 2019 after defeating Stockport County in the League One play-off final.

They took the lead inside five minutes when Ruben Rodrigues capitalised on an error from Stockport goalkeeper Corey Addai to slot home.

Stockport thought they had an immediate response, but their equaliser was ruled out following a VAR review after Adama Sidibeh was judged to have fouled George Johnston in the build-up.

The striker did eventually draw them level just before the half-hour mark, heading in a flick-on.

Kyle Wootton’s own goal put Bolton back in front after the break, before Sam Dalby’s scissor kick effectively secured the game.

Rodrigues then added a fourth from the penalty spot in stoppage time after Josh Dacres-Cogley was sent off for pulling Ibrahim Cissoko’s hair.

Progression for Bolton. Another failed attempt at promotion for Stockport.

The win ends Bolton’s long absence from the Championship after relegation in 2019.

Stockport, meanwhile, miss out on a return to the second tier for the first time in 24 years.

It is the second Wembley defeat of the season for them, having also lost to Luton Town in the Vertu Trophy final.

He now faces a defining summer as United look to build on progress

Michael Carrick has been asked so often about the uncertainty surrounding his future that he could almost have directed reporters to recycle answers from previous press conferences.

In many ways, though, the real challenge begins now for Carrick.

Guiding Manchester United to third place while overseeing 11 wins in his 16 games as interim manager was a notable achievement. Yet doing so across a 40-game campaign, without European football and with early exits from both domestic cup competitions, is very different from sustaining progress in a season that could stretch beyond 60 matches.

United's recruitment will be crucial

Central midfield remains the most pressing concern. Casemiro is expected to depart, Manuel Ugarte has yet to convince and Kobbie Mainoo cannot be expected to shoulder the burden every week.

Should Patrick Dorgu continue in a more advanced role, United are also in urgent need of greater competition for Luke Shaw at left-back. The same applies in goal. Senne Lammens is one option, particularly with Radek Vitek keen to build on an impressive season on loan at Bristol City by continuing to play regularly, something unlikely to happen if he returns to Old Trafford next term.

There is encouragement within the academy system. Eighteen-year-old midfielder Jacob Devaney has impressed during his loan spell at St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership, while highly rated England Under-20 international Shea Lacey is expected to receive more opportunities next season.

But United's academy cannot carry the responsibility alone. Carrick needs meaningful backing from the club's recruitment department.

A number of statistical analyses have attempted to argue that United's performances since Ruben Amorim's departure have not matched the results. That feels overly simplistic and overlooks the composure Carrick has restored at Carrington, the calm authority he has brought to the dressing room and his refusal to allow difficult moments to spiral.

It may not appear so at first glance, but with the added demands of European football and a heavier fixture schedule, securing third place again next season would represent significant progress. For Carrick to have any realistic chance of delivering it, United must strengthen around him.

Manchester City are preparing for the possibility of Pep Guardiola leaving the club after Sunday’s match with Aston Villa.

Guardiola is expected to depart the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season.

City insist he remains under contract for next season and are hopeful he will stay on.

Even so, preparations for a potential farewell are understood to be under way, with members of staff expecting him to leave.

He had suggested he had one more year at the club

It is believed several members of the squad are also anticipating Guardiola’s departure following the final game of the campaign against Villa, while the club have begun considering how best to honour the reign of their iconic manager.

One option under discussion is naming the newly expanded North Stand after Guardiola.

Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked under Guardiola at City, is regarded as the leading candidate to succeed the 55-year-old.

A memorable decade at the club

Guardiola has guided City to 17 major trophies, and 20 overall, including six Premier League titles, the Champions League, three FA Cups and five League Cups during a decade in Manchester.

Widely viewed as the club’s greatest manager, and among the finest coaches of his generation, Guardiola could still complete his remarkable spell at the Etihad with a seventh Premier League crown, having already lifted both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup this season.

Speculation surrounding his future has persisted for months, with questions about his position regularly surfacing in news conferences.

Asked on Friday whether the FA Cup final trip to Wembley would be his last visit there as City manager, Guardiola dismissed the suggestion.

“No way,” he said, reminding reporters he still had “one more year” remaining on his contract.

The hosts moved ahead, and appeared to have one foot in the final with a commanding 3-1 aggregate lead, seven minutes into the second half when Dan Udoh volleyed in from close range.

Grimsby set up a tense finish as Kieran Green headed in an equaliser with 17 minutes remaining before Jaze Kabia tapped home to put the visitors ahead on the night and level the tie on aggregate.

There was controversy surrounding both goals, with the first seeming to strike Kabia’s elbow on its way in, while the second survived a tight offside call.

What happened after 90 minutes?

Extra time unfolded in understandably nervy fashion before Kallum Cesay bundled home from close range in the 117th minute to send the Ammies through.

Salford fans celebrate on the pitch

The victory keeps alive Karl Robinson’s side’s hopes of promotion to the third tier after missing out on automatic promotion on the final day of the regular season.

Since reaching the English Football League in 2019, Salford’s closest brush with promotion from League Two came in 2023, when they were beaten by Stockport County in the play-off semi-finals.

The Ammies will face Notts County at Wembley in the final on Monday, 25 May, after the Magpies beat Chesterfield 1-0 on aggregate in their semi-final.
