Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

Dave and I had paddled the river all day, he in the front and me in the back. We had whispered when we talked because we had our bows and arrows across our laps, hoping to drift up on a buck along the riverbank. We stopped and cooked a little lunch at mid day and sat and soaked in the sounds and smells of fall. At the end of the day we arrived in a still backwater near the boat landing. I had been there many times, as a kid, with my dad, and knew that I could find the landing in the dark so we just sat in the canoe well after dark. The night sounds filled the air; coyotes, owls and many other birds, all mixed with the sounds of fish slurping bugs off the surface of the water.

We just sat back in the canoe seats for a long time just enjoying God's creation. Finally, while looking up at the star filled night sky, I broke the silence. I remember exactly what I said, "its hard for me to imagine that someone can take all this in and not believe there is a Creator". There was a long pause and then Dave responded, "I guess that's the way I feel". I was blown away. He was a young man in his late 20s that loved the outdoors as much as anyone I knew. He could survive for many days in the woods off of what he found and he understood how it all worked... he knew the creation... yet he didn't know the creator, he didn't even believe there was one. Dave listened to my explanation of why I have to believe in a God that created everything good. In the end Dave wasn't swayed. I've prayed for Dave for years and to this day I'm not sure where he stands with God

This morning I've been considering how someone can look around at all of nature (God's creation)and honestly say, "there is no God". I've watched a hummingbird out my window and marveled at how the paper thin wings could hold together as they fly at blinding speed, at times even in a pouring rain. I've seen a bumblebee on Linda's flowers and thought that without a God this overweight, oversized creature could never fly. I considered the human being and how a baby is formed from the act of conception to birth, a single cell splitting and splitting over and over until a baby arrives, and in seconds begins breathing on his own. I contemplate our earth and solar system. We are currently 94.11 million miles from the sun, if we to drift even 1% of that distance closer or further away, we could not survive... What holds us there? I've come to the conclusion that those that can't find a way to believe in the true God, after all the evidence, have been blinded.

C.S. Lewis explains it this way...
"We may ignore, but we can nowhere evade the presence of God. The world is crowded with Him. He walks everywhere incognito."

It seems that no matter how much we speak, how hard we try to convince someone of God's existence and the sacrifice of His son, some people just don't see. This however does not relieve us from the responsibility of sharing what Christ has given us to share. And our responsibility doesn't end at a belief in God... most already do. The arguments are as sound to the truth of Jesus Christ, who He was and is, and what He did and does. We must share Jesus Christ above all things. Be prepared from Genesis all the way through Revelations and the heart of what they teach.

John 20:31
but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name

The 2nd book of Timothy tells us to study and to work... and be prepared.
2 Timothy 2:15
Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

1 Peter 3:15
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you...

Watch for any and every opportunity to share what God has done for you... Be prepared to give an answer...

Now choose life."

Depending on the time of the year, the temperature, and rainfall, my wife will head to the woods to hunt mushrooms. She'll say, "Today could be the day they decide to pop out." Her favorites are Chicken Of The Woods, Golden Chanterelles, Hen Of The Woods, and of course Morels.

Actually, mushrooms don't just pop out, they grow to reproduce. They are the "fruit" of an underground network of fungus called mycelium. When the weather conditions are just right, this network sends up a mushroom to release tiny spores into the air, in the same way a plant grows a flower or fruit to produce seeds. The mycelium is underground and what we see and call the mushroom is actually the flower containing the fruiting part of the organism.

God's creation is an amazing thing to behold. God created all things full-grown and mature, but with the ability to reproduce, each one "according to its kind" (Gen. 1:11-12). The flower would bring forth flowers "according to its kind," the mushroom would bring forth mushrooms "according to its kind," and the human would bring forth humans "according to its kind." That's the way God designed it.

However, God gave humans something special... 'free will'. So even though I might look like my father or mother, I can choose to act differently and believe totally differently than they did.

Throughout the Bible we see examples of people making their own choices and then facing responsibility for their decisions. In Proverbs 16:9 King Solomon wrote, "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps."

God tells the people in Deuteronomy 30:19, "I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life." Every day we all have choices to make.

Joshua 24:15 "Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve."

I immediately began thinking about how nobody knows the day, time, and manner that they will leave this world. Nobody knows the exact circumstance of their death. The Bible tells us that our life is but a vapor and then we are gone. Our days are actually numbered and only known to God. James 4:14 asks the question; “What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes”. This verse teaches us about the fleeting nature of life, urging us to make the most of our time here on earth.

The next question we should be asking about our destiny is where we will spend eternity after we die. We are not like the animals that do not have a soul and when they die, their physical bodies are returned to the dust and they are gone forever. Humans are created by God with an eternal soul that will leave the body at the time of physical death and spend eternity in one of two places. Those places will be one of peace in paradise and being in the presence of Jesus Christ or one of torment, separation, and eternal damnation. You don’t know when and how but you can know where. There is hope of things eternal for the Christian. In John 14: 2-3, Jesus told His disciples: “In my Fathers house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also”. The thief on the cross knew his destiny. He knew he was going to die a horrible death but he also knew where his soul would be after his death. Jesus told him “Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise”. That thief recognized that he was a sinner and was receiving what he deserved but Jesus was being unjustly crucified and asked Jesus to remember him when He came into His kingdom. We too can have that confidence in our eternal destiny. If we confess our sins and repent, and place our trust in Jesus Christ for our eternal salvation, we truly will be saved to eternal life.

I consider myself a fortunate man because I know whatever befalls me in this physical life, I know my eternal destiny.

Praise to the Lord and to Him be all the glory!

It might not have made much money... but it was worth every cent I never made.

Over the last nearly 40 years the span of places I've guided has taken me from our southern border, just north of the Rio Grande River, to the mountains, rivers and lakes of Alaska. I've loved nearly every minute of it.

One of the things that I have enjoyed the most about guiding, whether for money or for free is the serving part. To see the excitement on the face of a young boy or girl or old man that just took their first buck, gobbler, elk or bear makes all of the hard work worthwhile. There's something about serving and seeing results that lifts the person doing the service work.

A couple of years ago we volunteered to host a deer hunt for a couple of kids from other parts of the country. One young lady in particular came from down south and she and her family had very little in possessions. She was so excited about everything she experienced here. When she took her buck, (a big 7 point) to see the tears in her eyes and her dad's eyes was more valuable than me shooting a record book buck myself. That's what serving others is all about...

God calls us to serve. He's give you and I skills or knowledge that someone else doesn't have, God put us together as a family and prepared us with different abilities for a reason, to serve one another. Mark 10:45 tells us, "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

When Jesus speaks about serving, we should listen to Him. Here is the very God of the universe Who came as a Man to serve. The word He uses for servant is the Greek word "diakoneō" which is where we get the name "deacon". Diakoneō means; "to be a servant of, to serve, wait upon, or minister to." That is what every one of us is called to do. Not to be a deacon but to be a servant of the members of Christ's Body, the church and to the world beyond. He served to the uttermost, giving His very "life as a ransom for many."

How do we not serve others in simple ways, when Jesus did what He did for us? I've found that the serving others is a true blessing to me as well... We see these blessing in different ways, but they are always there. There is true reward for serving others. As we serve others we are serving God Himself.

"Serve the Lord with gladness." — Psalm 100:2

What a great thought for the one that loves the Lord. Serving is a sweet aroma to the one that is focused on others and the Lord. But to the one that is living for himself, "serving" is a bitter thought. The very thought of serving is drudgery, work, even painful. There is no joy in the effort to those that don't love the Lord.

If we look around and listen to the needs of others, we will see and hear of needs and opportunities to serve. There is little that is more gratifying than filling the needs of a friend or a stranger.

Share the blessings.

This isn't an acknowledgement of a weakness on my part, but an understanding of my need for His strength. During the parts of my life when I didn't walk with Christ, I was much more comfortable in the dark. It was easy to hide there. The light of day exposed my spiritual shortcomings and sin nature. The light of Christ revealed my darkness, and when He exposed my sinful to the light of His gospel, my sin could not survive. So, we must walk in the light as He is in the light.

1 Corinthians 1:1
Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity.

Allow God to remove the darkness from around you. He will brighten your view if you choose to live away from the sin of this world.

John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. The
dictionary states that a guide is one who shows the way by leading,
directing, or advising. A good guide is someone who can advance the
overall experience for their clients, leading to successful and
memorable outings. To do this, a guide must possess critical skills to
be effective. These skills include, knowledge and expertise, very
effective communication skills, planning and organization skills,
instructional skills, as well as physical fitness. Without these skills, the
guide may be ineffective and unable to add productive value to the
hunting or fishing experience. I heard someone the other day say that
“you can’t teach what you don’t know, and you can’t lead others if you
don’t live it yourself.” This statement definitely applies to guides.

For Christians, we have the ultimate guide. Psalm 37:5 tells us, Let
the LORD be your guide into the future. Trust in Him and he will help
you.” It is impossible for God to fail as your guide. If we submit to His
leadership and wisdom he will lead us in the right paths. Psalm 32:8
states, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I
will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” These verses all highlight
the importance of having God as your guide in life and seeking His
wisdom in all aspects of life. Are you listening to your guide?

John 16:13 “When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into
all truth.”

That thing you have worried about or worked on for a week, a month, a year or more is just waiting for God's timing to be perfect.

Isaiah 40:31 tells us... When we are impatient and try to do things in our own timing or get discouraged and quit we miss out on God's blessings. Be patient, stay the course, when we allow God to work in and through us, in His timing, whatever it is that we are called to will work just as He's planned

Wait on the Lord's timing and don't lose heart. He knows what your waiting on and has a perfect plan.

ECCLESIASTES 3:1
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven

Our government has problems. Our
families have problems. Our churches have problems. Our
businesses have problems. Sometimes it feels like our whole lives
are nothing but problems. These problems could be insignificant
or enormous. You may not have enough money to cover the rent
this month and you are facing eviction. The car needs tires and
the money just isn't there. A family member is sick and you're not
sure you are going to be able to get them the care they need. You
spilled coffee on your pants on your way to work for an important
meeting with the Boss. All of these problems need some type of
solution, and sometimes the solution is not clear. If you are like
me, you try to "fix" every problem that you encounter. I don't like
to leave things undone and needing attention. Often, some
problems are beyond my control to provide a solution.

All humankind has a really big problem that they cannot fix. This
problem started a long time ago in a place called the Garden of
Eden. That problem has been passed to all humans and
continues today. This problem is sin and separation from God
because of it. Romans 3:23 states; "All have sinned and fall short
of the glory of God." We are incapable of fixing this problem on
our own. God cannot entertain sin so therefore we cannot
approach an all Holy God in our natural condition. Our sin
problem requires a miraculous solution. Praise God there is a
solution. God himself provided that solution in His Son, Jesus
Christ. The Bible tells us that "God so loved the world that He
gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes on Him shall
not perish, but have everlasting life." The precious blood of Jesus that He shed on the cross for your and my sins is the only
solution. Faith and trust in Jesus for our salvation is the only
answer to our problem. We can't fix our problem. Only Jesus is
qualified and able to fix our problem. Jesus himself stated "I am
the Way, the Truth, and the Life."

All we are required to do is place our faith and trust in Jesus as our personal Savior, and he is "faithful and just to forgive us our sins." Are you willing to simply receive what God has already
done through his Son Jesus?

You can change the way you hunt and throw out lots and lots of bait on that property to try to attract the deer on your property, it might attract more deer, it won't hold them there and they won't grow strong there.

This same concept is true of our churches today. If you look back over the 80 years in America you will see that regular church attendance is nearly ½ of what it used to be. What has happened? The habitat has changed.

It is so similar to deer habitat that it amazes me. Deer need to have quality food and protection to survive and thrive. The same is true for people. We need to be fed, but not just any food, but nutritious spiritual food to grow into what God wants and we need security.

I'm not talking about the days when church pot lucks were popular and everyone had plenty to eat. No, I'm talking about being fed quality spiritual nutrition. True Bible teaching that speaks the truth of sin, God's love and even His wrath. There is so much great quality information in the Bible and fewer and fewer churches are honestly teaching it anymore. So many are getting "baited in" to churches that tell you how great we are and how much you deserve and if you just follow a few steps you will be healthy, wealthy and wise. But that's not what the Bible teaches.

The other thing that good habitat supplies is a safe and protective place for it's occupants. Churches have been known as the only place that shoot their wounded. How sad is that? Gossip has killed more good churches in our country than arsonists ever will. People need a safe place and if they can't find it in a church, they will find safety somewhere else, although it will most likely be false safety.

The job of the church to "go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," (Matthew 28:19)

A disciple is one that follows Jesus and works alongside Him. Are our churches doing that? Are we preparing those that come, helping them in turn make more disciples through their lives? Are we giving them the right nutrition and security that good habitat provides?

If you are not in a church like that I challenge you to find one, they are still out there.

An inaccurate
measure of powder could and most likely will affect the accuracy
of the shot. For accurate and repeatable shot placement, the
powder charge is one thing that must remain consistent. Too little
powder could result in a weak load that will drastically change the
trajectory of the bullet. Too much powder could cause an extreme
spike in pressure and cause the firearm to fail and explode. This
is a safety hazard that could injure the shooter or other
bystanders. Attention to detail and accuracy in execution are
critical.

The Bible emphasizes the importance of giving your best efforts in
all aspects of life. Key verses that highlight this principle are:
Proverbs 16:3 states; "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and
He will establish your plans." By dedicating our efforts to God, we
align our goals with his will, enabling success in our endeavors.
Ecclesiastes 9:10 tells us; "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it
with all your might." This verse stresses that whatever we do, we
should do it with maximum effort. This reflects a life lived with
purpose and a willingness to please God. 1 Corinthians 10:31
tells us that whatever we do, no matter how small, should be
performed with the intention of honoring God.

All these verses encourage believers to approach their work and
daily tasks with dedication, viewing their efforts as acts of worship
and service to God. Just as the powder must be measured with
care and attention to detail to make an effective shot, we must
also give a "full measure" in our service to God and others.

Galatians 6:9 "Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due
season we will reap, if we do not give up."

Warren knew a local rancher and told me that he would pick up the cost of the trip. All I had to do was, get out of school, buy a tag and join him. Warren knew how much I loved to hunt and he knew I would eat up this western hunting adventure. I thought about the offer for a second, but it was not a hard decision to make.

For three days I hunted drainages, washes, buttes and grasslands. I'd like to say I remember it so well, but looking back, I realize my obsession with killing my first mule deer probably robbed me of much of the rest of the enjoyment of that hunt. On the afternoon of the third day I did shoot a nice four by four buck and felt the thrill of success.

I'm sorry to say, there have been other hunts where I focused only on filling my tag. Probably because of that focus and determination, many of those tags were filled, but in the process I robbed myself of enjoying the entire experience.

There are so many areas of life where our focus is just on the end goal, or the finish line. The goal shouldn't only be getting to our destination but to enjoy every bit of the experience along the way. Our God wants us to enjoy His creation every day and to treasure each new day as a special gift from Him.

Psalm 118:24
This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

I'm not talking about the kind of darkness you experience on a moonless night in a remote wilderness. I'm talking about the type of darkness where there is a total absence of light. I think the closest that I have been to total darkness is being in a deep cavern underground and the tour guide turns the lights off. There is a cavern close to where I live that has tours in the cavern and turning the lights out while you are over 100ft. deep underground is part of the tour. It gets really black when the lights go out. There is a total absence of light.

The Bible speaks to another type of darkness. It describes our sinful condition before a Holy God as total darkness and devoid of any light. In our natural spiritual state, we are in total darkness. Our sin blots out any light that we could possess.
1 John 1:6 tells us; "If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth."

The Bible frequently depicts sin as darkness, representing moral and spiritual corruption. This imagery is in contrast to the purity and truth of God.
Ephesians 6:12 tells us that we wrestle against "the rulers of the darkness of this world..."

The association of sin with darkness emphasizes several key concepts: Separation from God, Moral corruption, and Spiritual blindness.

The good news is that we do not have to live in darkness. There is hope when we turn to God's light. Jesus is that light. The light of Jesus overcomes all sin and darkness. John 1:5 states; "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." Darkness has no power over the light. Where light exists, there is no darkness. Don't live in the darkness. Trust in Jesus for salvation from your sin and darkness. He is the only way to defeat the darkness.

John 8:12; "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of light."

Behind her there was movement and then I saw the large rack. My heart started to pound out of my chest as I carefully lifted the bow. Suddenly the doe stopped, lifted her head to the cool evening air and just like dust in the wind, she was gone with the big whitetail buck in tow.

On another hunt, in the Missouri breaks of Montana, a big bull was with a small herd of cows just out of bow range and one of those cows either winded or spotted me. Usually it came down to one of two poor decisions on my part. The game either caught my movement or my scent.

We've all made good and not-so-good decisions in life. I can personally recall several poor decisions I've made. Some only temporarily affected my life. Others impacted my life for a much longer period of time. You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes

Over a half century ago I got my very first job pumping gas at a Standard Oil Gas Station. That same year I also shot my very first deer. I can clearly remember squeezing the trigger of the wincheat model 94, and watching the big buck hit the ground. He was at best just an average 7 point, but in my mind he was a monster! I remember asking my dad if I could get it mounted and he responded with, "why would you want to mount that buck?" My response was, "because I may never shoot a bigger one." He laughed and just said, "You will."

Since then I've had many more and different jobs and killed many more deer and far bigger bucks, but he will always be my first trophy buck and his antlers still hang on the wall!

Life is full of firsts and lasts. I'm not sure when my last day of work will be, I often say that I will retire 3 or 4 days before my funeral (and I hope that's true). Hopefully my last day of deer hunting won't come for many more Novembers. However, if I'm being honest with myself, I know that someday I will shoulder the gun for the last time. Until then I'll enjoy and treasure each and every hunt.

Psalm 39:4 "Show me, Lord, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is."

In life there are lots of first days and last days. Whether it's marriage, work, hunting, or even life itself, everything has a first and a last. The Bible frequently addresses the brevity of human life and the reality of death. It compares our time on earth to fleeting things like a, wisp of vapor, a shadow, dying grass or a fading flower. The scriptures emphasize the importance of putting our faith in the assurance of God's promises and not in earthly things. In Hebrews 11:6 we read, "And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him."

Psalm 103:15-16 "As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone".
