Meeting on Monday nights, “The Principles of Artistic Expression” includes all those beginning to paint, returning to your art after a period of time, intending to strengthen your skills, or refining a style uniquely your own. As we explore the potential for self-expression in our visual language, each session we work on practical applications, with demonstrations, of essential means of artistic expression: composition, edges, shapes, values, color, light, and subject matter. We always set aside time for sensible, encouraging feedback on participants’ artwork. All mediums are welcome, including oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, fabric, and paper-based arts. GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

The August 13, 1973 Golden Transcript provided this story about the Transcript’s founder, George West.

George West teamed up with Mines students and printed posters announcing a balloon ascension from Castle Rock for April 1, 2:30 p.m. Classes were dismissed at Mines, as well as well as every other school, and almost everyone in town gathered down at what is now Brooks Field [now Marv Kay Stadium], staring up at Castle Rock. Sure enough, they could see figures running around up there, and hear the excited voices floating down.

At precisely 2:30 p.m., an unearthly blast shattered nearly every window in Golden, and serious faced Mines seniors passed out small, printed cards — “APRIL FOOL.”

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

86 Years Ago
The March 31, 1938 Colorado Transcript announced that Chamber of Commerce members planned to attend an open house at the Chief Hosa CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) Camp. The CCC was celebrating the 5th anniversary of its founding by the Roosevelt administration. In addition to the open house, the men of two other nearby camps (Morrison and Mount Vernon) were hosting a buffalo barbecue on Genessee Mountain.

The CCC was–and remains–one of the most popular Roosevelt-era programs. It was designed to provide jobs for young men during a time of very high unemployment. The men were provided with food, clothing, shelter, schooling, job training, and $30/month. They were required to send $22 of that wage home to their families. The CCC left many lasting monuments throughout America.

Chief Hosa was the first camp in this area, but it was later joined by camps in Morrison, Mount Vernon Canyon, and on Lookout Mountain. The “boys” provided many valuable services: they fought fires and built roads and bridges. They laid pipe for Golden’s reservoir on Lookout Mountain and built curbs and gutters in our residential neighborhoods. They planted over a million trees in Colorado during a single year, and worked on eradicating pine beetles and grasshoppers during major infestations. They filled sandbags during floods and helped repair damage afterwards. One of their most spectacular accomplishments was building Red Rocks Amphitheater.

In 1939, the Transcript‘s George Kimball wrote the following:

While many of the Roosevelt administration’s innovations have been severely criticized…it’s mighty seldom that any partisan has the nerve to publicly find fault with the workings of the Civilian Conservation Corps. In reality, the CCC is one of the grandest things ever conceived for the good of humanity and the rising generation, as well as bringing lasting benefit to the general public. Hundreds of thousands of young men between eighteen and twenty-three years of age who might be loafing about the streets, pool rooms, accumulating wrong slants on life and drifting into mischief and petty crime, have been salvaged and are being taught how to become useful, respected citizens.

The CCC was shut down when the United States entered World War II, as the young men were needed in the military.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

85 Years Ago
The March 30, 1939 Colorado Transcript announced the opening of a new bowling alley. Three teams–representing the Golden Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, and School of Mines–had been formed, and they would have the honor of rolling the first balls. More teams were being formed but they could only compete three at a time, as the business had only three alleys.

The original owner sold the Golden Bowling Lanes to Cliff Evans in January of 1941. He closed the business in late 1942.

This was not Golden’s first bowling alley, nor would it be the last. The International Bowling Saloon was built when Golden was only six months old. Another bowling alley operated in the Goosetown neighborhood in the 1870s. The Coors Beer Garden offered bowling, also in the 1870s. A new alley opened on Washington Avenue in 1902. It enjoyed a few years of popularity, but closed in 1907.

The Golden Bowl opened at 24th and East Streets in 1956, and closed in 2014. It was replaced by a Natural Grocers.

SAYS MORE ROADS LEADING TO CITY IS VITAL NEED
Colorado Transcript, August 23, 1923

In 1923, Alderman Bert Jones wrote that better roads were one of Golden’s greatest needs. He proposed that we partner with Boulder to build the north and south ends of a road between the cities, then try to persuade the county and state to fund the rest.

GOLDEN-BOULDER ROAD ASSURED
Colorado Transcript, May 5, 1927

In 1927, a Transcript article reported that the state had committed $18,200 to help fund the proposed highway. Several more articles about the hoped-for highway appeared throughout that year and for several years following. There was always progress on the road, but it was never quite completed.

WPA PROJECTS BEING PLANNED FOR BOULDER ROAD
Colorado Transcript, August 20, 1936

In 1936, we were hoping to use WPA funds to complete the road from Golden to the Boulder county line. Boulder County had already completed their part of the road.

GOLDEN TO BECOME HOME OF ATOMIC WORKMEN
Colorado Transcript, March 29, 1951

73 Years Ago
The March 29, 1951 Colorado Transcript reported that the federal government planned to build “New $45,000,000 Atom Plant to Employ 1,000 On Special Secret Research War Work.” This was the Rocky Flats plant–now a National Wildlife Refuge. The mayor remarked that Highway 93 “had better be fixed fast.”

“It is reported that Boulder county is to put its end of Highway 93 in shape right away, and the same is hoped for in Jefferson county.”

REALLY ROCKY FLATS
Colorado Transcript, November 20, 1952

By 1952, there was a road of sorts, but apparently it was bad. The November 20, 1952 Transcript included a guest editorial describing Highway 93 as:

…a slow road to drive, but it is a terror on cars. Even the new cars with all their easy riding features bounce all over the roads…. The last six miles into Boulder are oiled, as is the first mile out of Golden, but between the two it really deserves the name Rocky Flats. Every year that I can remember the county commissioners have added a little gravel to the road. One good storm and a few cars later the road is just as rocky and rough as ever. Now with all the traffic to the atomic plant, there is a greater need than ever to improve the Rocky Flats road. Although some work has been done on the road recently, it still has a long way to go, before it can be considered adequate for the traffic on it.

FROM WORST TO BEST
Colorado Transcript, December 20, 1956

As the Transcript had hoped, the arrival of a major employer (the nuclear weapons plant) inspired the state to finally finish the Golden to Boulder road. The December 20, 1956 Transcript reported that “Highway 93 from Golden to Boulder over Rocky Flats used to be one of the worst in the state. Now it is one of the best.”
