Above: Frontal view of Alvin’s guppy breeding setup.

1) Can you introduce yourself. How long have you been breeding Guppies?

I’m really considered a novice dabbling in guppies, as I have only worked on 3 separate strains thus far (Albino full reds, Wild reds and Blonde reds). Although I have been in the guppy hobby for the past 3 years, I still find myself learning new stuff every time I pick up a conversation with a fellow hobbyist.

2) Which is your favorite Guppy strain and why?

As evidenced in the strains that I am currently keeping, my interest lies in solid red strains. My dream goal is to produce an albino full red line with 100% red colour coverage (yes, including that elusive colour on the abdomen area!), and with massive dorsal proportions. You could say that my dream guppy has had many influences from my previous years’ experience in keeping show Bettas and Discus over the past years. Extreme finnage forms and purity of colour, combined with an understanding of fish genetics have always captivated me since young.

3) What are the criteria you have when selecting guppies use for breeding?

Basically, it boils down to deportment, finnage and colour for me. However, (in my humble opinion) understanding the genetic background of your guppy lines also provides you with an edge above those who just breed fish using external traits.

4) Can you share your guppy breeding technique that helps you produce beautiful guppies.I prefer to keep my guppy keeping hobby simple. Providing good water, and having a good feeding regimen goes a long way, and that’s just what I do for my guppies.5) In your opinion which strain of guppies are the easiest to rear and which are the hardest?

I believe that each and every one of the available strain of guppies have their own challenges in maintaining the lines. As I have only dabbled with a few strains, I cannot say for sure which is the hardest and which is the easiest to maintain/keep.

5) What do you feed your fishes and how often do you feed them?

Tubifex worms (live), bbs, and a good pellet food. For young fish, I feed small amounts throughout the entire day AND night, up till right before the lights goes off. Older fish (3 months and up) get a minimum of three feedings a day. Protein, protein, protein!

6) Are you breeding your own particular line of Guppies?

I had to start off somewhere, so I went after the best available pairs I could get my hands on right at the start. My original breeders came from Taiwan, and over the past 3 years, I have expanded my lines to include crosses to “new bloodlines” from other Taiwanese sources, as well as keeping the original line I purchased still going unadulterated. I currently am in over my head with maintaining all the different lines I now have!

7) If yes, what are the kind of efforts needed to establish and grow your own line of guppies? (You can provide answers related to in time required, human resources and technologies to reach a self-made line). What do you think about the fish keeping culture in your country and in also specifically guppy keeping?

You need to have an idea of what your ideal guppy looks like, and then work towards it over time. With regards to achieving what I envision as the ultimate full red guppy line, I am currently keeping 3 strains of red guppies, with each strain having at least 1 or more distinct lines going! So to answer the question, you will need a good setup, and a meticulous and well thought out breeding plan.

In terms of the guppy keeping culture in Singapore, I believe we are still learning and picking up the skills and techniques from our neighbours, especially from Thailand and Taiwan. The guppy standards are progressively getting better over here, and I am truly looking forward to see how we go from here in a few years’ time.

8) Is there any guppy breeder or breeders from whom you get inspiration from?

Many! Most notably though, I absolutely love the guppies raised by a famed Taiwanese breeder, YS (鄭宇宸).

9) From your experience what are the most common problems faced by a guppy breeder?

Getting the basics right. Water and food (i.e feeding the fish right)!11) This will be the last question: What advise would you give to a guppy hobbyist just staring out in guppy breeding?

Once you have managed to get the basics right, start off with the best available fish you can afford out of your pocket. If you plan to work on raising show guppies by starting off with feeder fish guppies, no one’s stopping you, but I guess we will see you in about 20 generations or more down the road *cough cough*. The aim is to start off as close to the current top quality of guppies available as possible, budget willing of course.

Last but not least, enjoy the hobby

Cheers, Alvin

What do you get when you cross Moscow and Blue Grass?

Today I just want to share with you a guppy cross that made between two very popular strains in the guppy world, the Purple Moscow and the Blue Grass guppy. They are some of the finest guppies around and are some of the most well developed strains in terms of how much the strain has been improved over the years in terms of finnage, form and colour. I managed to get my hands on a high dorsal strain of blue grass from a local Singaporean breeder and I must say that I am quite pleased with the resulting young from this line. I have actually taken a video of the blue grass guppies and these guppies are in high demand in Singapore as all the fishes I put up for sale of this line have been bought up and I cannot meet the demands of some guppy hobbyists who wants them. I will try and breed some more of these fishes but at this time, I really need the tanks for something else that I have planned. Anyway, below is a video of the Blue grass guppies that I have reared and raised at home. I think the blue grass guppies are a real beauty and they are one of my favorite strains indeed. Another strain that I really like are the Purple Moscows. Below is the strain that I have used to make this cross. These fishes have placed second in a show before and they too have quite good form and finnage. Below is the Moscow line that raise. They are not the type of Moscow that is totally dark, they are bred more for their Purplish sheen. Can you see the purplish sheen extending from the head to one third of its body? So, what is on most people’s mind is how will the young eventually look like? Here it is fold, the progeny of this cross. I have two pictures here to show you and lets discuss about the fish after looking at the pictures.

The progeny actually had the purple Moscow head and the tail colour followed the Blue Grass line. The Blue Grass strain also had a fair share of iridiscence on their bodies and it is carried over to the progeny of this cross. One thing that needs to be worked on is this fish’s finnage. They are not as good as their parents and yes, sometimes this can be expected. i might need to work on this line further if i ever plan to fix the line and improve it. Nevertheless, this cross has definitely intrigued me. Interesting isn’t it? I thought it was an interesting fish and this is the first time I have actually encountered this colour combination. If you have had similar experiences with a cross like this, do email me as I am interested to learn from you too. Cheers and happy guppy breeding! ~ Ardy

This is a pair of Half Black Yellow guppies bred by Ardy. They are also called Half Black Leopards due to the patterns on their caudal fin.

The pair of Half Black Yellow guppies that you see in the video are the offspring of guppies that I managed to get from a farm located here in Singapore.

Somehow, these guppies from what I can remember is a strain that local Singapore guppy farmers seem to favour more than the other breeds.

I think one of the reasons for these guppies being chosen to be bred by the farmers is their hardiness and the size that they can attain even in normal conditions and given normal and basic fish food.

This strain is easy to breed and the female can have as many as 50 fries in each drop. The females are also quite sturdy and have thick bodies. You can notice that in the makes as well. Their bodies grow out first before their tails and finnage.

There is still room for improvement in these fishes. Their caudal fins can be improved and if we were to follow IFGA standards, we would want the tail to be more angular and sharp at the edges.

Currently, these fishes have a more rounded edge to their tail and this is a characteristic common in local Singapore farm bred guppies.

I guess in the past, guppy hobbyist were more in favour with this tail type. Right now, guppy breeders prefer guppy strains that has a more angular tail edge and more triangular in shape.

Well, time changes things and changes taste. Who knows that the round tail or also called fan tail guppy type might becomes something more favoured in the near future.

These Half Black Yellow Guppies are also non picky eaters. They eat almost anything that you throw at them and I have found that they are much more resistant against diseases and therefore if you were to feed these guppies live Tubifex worms (seen as a risky live food but a superb guppy growth food), they will not be so easily infected by the pathogens that the live Tubifex worms might bring along.

Its kinda strange why these things happen but genetically, we can explain that some strains are just much more stronger and resistant against diseases than other strains of guppies.

I do not keep these guppies anymore but I occasionally see them in the pet stores and at fish farms in Singapore.

Do look out for them in your pet stores. They might just be swimming in the tanks in your pet shop.

If you ever find them or you are keeping them, do give me some comments and share your experiences keeping these beautiful guppies. I am sure many would want to hear your stories.

Cheers and happy guppying!

Guppy Nutrition: Feeding Guppies with Dry Fish food

I think by now , you would have known the importance of nutrition to guppies. Feed them well and they will grow into magnificent fishes with wide tails and strong bodies. Feed them wrongly and you will get guppies that look frail and would never reach their full potential.

Guppies are omnivores. What does that mean?

It means that these fishes eat either other animals or plants. It makes them more or less similar to us humans (Ain’t that cool?)

I have often observed that guppies often nibble at the side of tanks or any other object which are inside their tanks. I have no concrete proof why they are doing that but common sense that me that they could be nibbling at algae that is available in our tanks. To me, it is also a sign that my guppies are healthy and are foraging. I would rather have my guppies yearning for food than dangling helplessly with its head pointed up and its tail pointing down (I think you know what I am talking about here)

Guppies it seems do well in fast flowing waters and I think their natural habitat is of such nature. They are very active fish and are also fast growing. It is because of this that they would require regular feeding and they should be fed with as much variety of food as you can give. In other words, a nutritional balanced diet that contains a varied amount of vitamins, appearance, flavour and even texture. This would not only help the guppies to grow better but it will stimulate them to eat more.

For me, I feed my guppies three types of food:

1. Dry Fish Food

2. Live Baby Brine Shrimp

3. Frozen Blood worms

In the past, I use to feed my guppies Live Tubifex worms but I have decided not to continue with that practice as I believe it is the cause of the multiple disease breakouts in my fish room.

At times, occurrence like that have affected me so much that I find that risking my fishes to total destruction just to get them bigger faster might not be the perfect formula after all. Tubifex are now banned from my fish room and I stick to the above guppy food to bring my guppy to size.

Take note however that Tubifex does have an effect on female guppies in a good way. I observe that when you feed the female guppies with Tubifex worms, they actually drop more young. I might be wrong but I believe if you have the time, you might want to put this to test.

Hi guys! I am back in the hobby again and let me tell you how excited I am to be contributing to this blog again.

The post Hi Everyone! I am Back to Guppy Breeding and the Guppy Hobby! appeared first on GuppyBlog.com.

Yes. You read that right. I am back in the guppy hobby after being absent for more than 2 years.

Why?

Well, the usual hobby killers, I had to move house. And yes, I had to stop the hobby for a while as I had to concentrate on other matters, like designing the interior of the new house and the likes.

But no worries. I have just installed a new guppy breeding setup in my new home and I hope to be active on this blog again. it took some effort to get the whole set up up again and this time I have a smaller guppy breeding setup. The reason for a smaller setup is because I want something which I can handle and I can take care of in spite and despite my busy schedule.

You see guys, I am a full time Forex trader and internet entrepreneur and at times my other projects need me more and this have caused my hobby to suffer a little. but not to worry, my guppies are always well fed and their environment is always cleaned and filters changed on a weekly if not fortnightly basis. This have to be done and I have some hands in the house to help me do all those things when things get busy.

I hope to add more pictures and share my experiences with all you guppy lovers out there. The picture that I have added below shows my setup. 6 tanks on each level, making it 12 tanks in all. The guppy setup is located in one of the rooms in my condo and at room temperature (29 Degrees Celcius), the guppies do quite well and can be observed always asking for food whenever I enter the room.

That is always something that I want to see in my guppies, ever hungry and always looking around for food.

Guppy Breeding Room

The Guppy bug always comes back to me time and time again. I guess this could be the “Guppy curse” that a guppy breeder gets over the years. The hobby just becomes part of his life so much that no matter what he does, he will always get back to the hobby. I have heard that this happens to other fish breeders as well. it happens to Betta breeders, Discus breeders and even angelfish breeders.

It is something hard to describe but somehow the bug to keep guppies and to breed guppies again always comes back.

So, stay tune to the guppy pictures, videos, articles and images that will be coming your way. I hope to chronicle my guppy breeding experience with all of you and I hope that you will appreciate the effort that I am putting in for this blog.

I would be very glad too if you can leave some comments for me. And if you would like to purchase my guppies, do not hesitate to send me an email and leave me a message. I will reply to you as soon as possible with your enquiries.

Cheers and happy guppying!

~ Ardy
