Winning the Oscar for special effects on a 12 million dollar budget is a scrappy triumph of creativity. Excellent character drama elevates this to the greatest Godzilla story ever told.

Blue Eye Samurai

A mature revenge story featuring a larger-than-life villain voiced by Kenneth Branagh. Great action, dialogue, and historical authenticity. Recommended by George R.R. Martin for Game of Thrones fans.

Shogun

If you like historical fiction, this is for you. Shogun is a detailed recreation of life and death in 17th-century Japan told from an English adventurer’s perspective. Like the cherry blossom, this 10-episode miniseries leaves too soon.

Tokyo Vice

Based on a true story, Jake Adelstein is an investigative reporter from Missouri who aspires to expose Japan’s Yakuza crime families. His naivete and ambition get him involved almost immediately in the deadly politics of his subjects.

Black Sails

If HBO had picked up this series instead of Starz, it would have been a global phenomenon. Black Sails is a prequel to Treasure Island set in the Golden Age of Piracy. Long John Silver leaps off the pages and fights the British Navy alongside Blackbeard to create a pirate kingdom. Unlike Game of Thrones, all four seasons were carefully planned before filming began. Each season builds on the previous, and plot points established in the first episode of Season 1 are resolved in the final episode of Season 4. The finest Pirate tale ever told. Warning: you may want to fast-forward past some disturbing sexual violence in the first season.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Into the Spider-Verse pushed the boundaries of 3D animation by having artists hand-draw on top of the 3D image to reproduce the feel of comic books. This innovative style is complemented by a wildly imaginative cast of Spider-People from alternate dimensions. Miles Morales is as cool as Metro Boomin’s soundtrack.

TMNT Mutant Mayhem

Mutant Mayhem is the reboot this franchise needed. It is animated, unlike less successful efforts. The Turtles are voiced by teenagers given freedom to improvise, which results in believable and lovable characters. Jackie Chan’s Splinter is hilarious as their overprotective dad (who is definitely not a giant rat). Soundtrack from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

Dune: Part 2

Dune made my list in 2021, so I’m predisposed to love this film. Part 2 continues the worldbuilding and completes Paul Atreides’ arc. Visually creative with impeccable sound design.

Fallout

Fallout is the rare video game adaptation that stands on its own. Jonathan Nolan’s world-building chops are on full display as the story slowly reveals the truth about the violent factions that rule this post-apocalyptic wasteland. Dark humor keeps things light.

DOCUMENTARY

20 Days in Mariupol

Putin called 20 Days in Mariupol “fake news”, but an unbiased viewer will see only the terror and shock of Putin’s neighbors. This intimate portrait of suffering and solidarity on the front line of Ukraine fully deserves its Academy Award.

The Insurrectionist Next Door

Alexandra Pelosi (Nancy’s daughter) interviews January Sixers after they’ve had time to think about it. The most interesting interviews are people who were brought to the rally by family members and got caught up in the mayhem. Their ruined lives are a cautionary tale about the company we keep.

Watch the Sound

Mark Ronson, a Grammy-winning producer, hosts a fascinating look at music production featuring interviews with artists. Each episode features a different technology: Auto-Tune, Sampling, Reverb, Synthesizers, Drum Machines, and Distortion.

Extraordinary

In the world of Extraordinary, everyone receives a power on their 18th birthday—except Jen, whose existential crisis forms the show's emotional core. There is real creativity in the powers given and the ways those weird powers complicate their lives. For fans of The Boys and What We Do in the Shadows.

In response to this blog post, The Hacker News has quietly added “contributed article” notices to all sponsored articles.

It's a positive step toward transparency.

I’ll write a follow-up when I find the time. For now, you can tell which articles have value for cyber threat intelligence teams by looking at the author.

“Newsroom” is news. “The Hacker News” is vendor hype. Detailed explanation below.

A colleague recently shared an article by The Hacker News titled “The SEC Won't Let CISOs Be: Understanding New SaaS Cybersecurity Rules.” Authorship is attributed to The Hacker News, but I became suspicious after reading the content. The article mentions a company called AppOmni several times and contains links to their website.

Then I noticed that the URLs included the phrase “utm_campaign=SEC SSPM Hacker News Article” (see below screenshot). At this point, it became obvious that this paid ad campaign was written by a vendor and inserted surreptitiously into the news feed.

The next thing I did is download their Media Kit, which you can obtain here. In that kit, The Hacker News brazenly declares that it is the only cybersecurity publication that engages in deceptive advertising practices. For $2,500, they will launder any vendor’s marketing material and transform it into “news.” See the screenshot below. Apollo.io estimates an annual revenue of $2,000,000.

Why does it matter? The FTC Act Section 5 generally prohibits deceptive advertising. Because of this act, bloggers, influencers, and media outlets must disclose to their audience when they are paid to make an endorsement. If The Hacker News is paid to endorse products and doesn’t disclose that to its readers, it violates journalism ethics and may even violate the FTC Act. Read the FTC’s guidance here. Excerpt below.

How deep does this go? How many deceitful articles are published daily? Let’s take February 9, 2024, as an example. From what I can tell, advertisements are attributed to the “The Hacker News” account, and news articles are attributed to the “Newsroom” account. Based on that indicator, 3 of the 9 articles on the front page are deceptive endorsements for Myrror, Wazuh (shown below), and Cato Networks. Cato’s ad was originally posted on February 5th, but they must have paid for an ad campaign that inserts it into every page of the site.

I reached out to The Hacker News for comment but haven’t received a reply. They claim to be “#1 Trusted Cybersecurity News Source”, but that assertion doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. Their new motto should be “Caveat Emptor”. Reader beware.

When combined with the MITRE Engage framework, practitioners can create targeted campaigns to deceive and deny their most advanced adversaries (and anyone else unlucky enough to stumble into the environment). 🕸

Album of the Year. Massive farewell album with a wide range of metal flavors in service to a hellscape concept album that parallels Dante’s Inferno. The band’s final show was in October, but I’ll keep jamming until I wake up in purgatory.

Holocene / The Ocean

Positioned as an epilogue to the two-part Phanerozoic album cycle, Holocene began as material for the synth-player’s solo project. This synth foundation, coupled with the use of horns, creates a markedly different soundscape than Phanerozoic. Holocene refers to the “Age of Man”, and the lyrics reflect our inability to accept the limits of mortality and entropy.

Spaces Between Silence / Brave New World

This is the only AI “suggestion” Apple Music has gotten right in 8 years. A catchy band with theatrical sensibilities reminiscent of acts like My Chemical Romance and Panic! At The Disco.

Rated R / Red

More of the same from their eighth album, which is good enough for me. The keyboard-led intros are surprisingly cinematic.

SUPERBLOOM / Silent Planet

Silent Planet’s near-death experience when their tour van flipped in a snowstorm and spilled them into the night inspired this exploration of the paranormal and paranoid. Offworlder is my Music Video of the Year for its John Wick combat choreography.

Follow intrepid journalists as they bring down a money-laundering house of cards that some hoped would become Germany’s answer to American Big Tech firms. Most people were happy to see the stock price rise and never bothered to fact-check Wirecard’s financial statements.

Q: Into the Storm

Q is a bizarre cypher personality that gained traction in the lead-up to January 6th. Unraveling it required cozying up to 8chan’s edgelord admins.

I heard Mark Cuban argue on the Crypto Skeptics podcast that the Dallas Maverick’s fan rewards program is a use case that proves the utility and innovation of the technology. The hosts let him get away with it, but the logic looks like this: rewards programs are the best use case for NFTs, and NFTs are the best use case for cryptocurrency, which is the best use case for blockchain. So 10 years and billions of dollars later we have a more complicated way of offering rewards to fans.

Crypto has yet to find a use case that non-speculators are attracted to.

This year’s orphantwin and Norma Jean albums pair nicely with Cory Putnam’s (abandoned?) side project, Hundred Suns. Deathrattle Sing For Me is more experimental than 2019’s catchy All Hail and sees the return Norma Jean’s classic dissonance. Future Classic is an album of short “hypersongs” recorded during the pandemic by Cory and his brother Matthew. The Prestaliis is a polished hard rock debut from veteran performers.

Spirits / Nothing More

Nothing More address pandemic rage, the pseudo-spiritual nature of alcohol, love, and other real-life concerns. Their live shows are epic. A thoughtful group that has been perfecting their craft for over a decade. Emotionally intelligent rock. Lead vocalist Johnny Hawkins made a personality test to accompany the album. Voyeurist / Underoath

They’ve dropped a little post-hiatus, but Underoath are still better than 99% of metalcore. They remain catchy, and hard, and know how to write harmonies. I’ve watched Digital Ghost, the live performance of Voyeurist, dozens of times. You can view it in its entirety below.

I’m a sucker for a one-two, clean-harsh duet and this album delivers.

WeCrashed

The central question in WeCrashed is whether Adam and Rebekah Nuemann are dreamers or schemers. Adam is a lifelong entrepreneur whose sales superpowers were unlocked by Rebekah’s life-coaching. Together they built WeWork, a firm specializing in cool co-working spaces. The series manages to stay interesting to the end by focusing on the dynamics of their relationship and their shared desire for fame, wealth, and community.

The Dropout

Elizabeth Holmes worshipped the celebrity founders of Silicon Valley. That worship included wearing Steve Job’s famous black turtleneck, dropping out of Stanford, and the need to mythologize herself and her company. The co-dependent relationship between Holmes and Sunny Balwani is explored in detail as well as the damage caused to investors, patients, and family who bought into the PR campaign that was Theranos. Story is stretched thin at points, but it’s worth a watch.

Ozark

The final season falls a bit flat, but everything leading up to it is entertaining. Jason Bateman plays an every-man who is forced to launder money for the cartel to protect his family. Featuring a star-making performance from Julia Garner as the tragic anti-hero Ruth Langmore. Breaking Bad meets Arrested Development.

The North Water

A quality BBC historical fiction limited series set in the twilight of the whale trade. The ship’s officers are colluding with the ship’s owner to sink it for an insurance payout, but the voyage goes awry. Colin Farrell was born to play villains, and his performance as the primal Henry Drax is better than his well-reviewed turn as Penguin in The Batman.

The Terror / Season 1

A Royal Navy mission to find the northern passage through Canada goes wrong when the vessels are ice-bound in the Arctic Circle. Supernatural horror mixed with historical fiction produces an eerie fable about the hubris of humanity’s drive to establish dominion over every corner of the earth. Companion to The North Water.

Better Call Saul

In Breaking Bad, Saul Goodman is a fast-talking, sleazy lawyer who works for the cartel. Better Call Saul tells his origin story as well as the post-BB conclusion. He is a born hustler who loves the thrill of the con, but there is always a shred of hope that he will come good. That tension simmers in his most important relationships and adds depth to a character that was often comic relief in BB.

Black Bird

Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser deliver jailhouse cat-and-mouse performances based on a true story about a drug dealer offered a “get out of jail free” card if he can get a confession out of a suspected serial killer before his imminent release. It’s a character study disguised as true crime which elevates the material beyond salacious details.

The English

The English is a revenge tale that begins in media res and gradually connects disparate timelines and locations over the course of 6 episodes. Cinematography takes advantage of the wild beauty of America and is frequently stunning. Emily Blount and Chaske Spencer lead an excellent cast through a story that represents the best of historical fiction.

The Staircase

The character of Michael Peterson becomes the primary evidence against him in the criminal trial brought against him for the murder of his wife, Kathleen, and is presented in both the documentary (2018) and the limited series (2022). The documentary leans toward Michael’s innocence. The scripted series spans a wide range of time before and after the incident. It reveals more about the damage Michael’s narcissistic actions (whether he is a murderer or not) throughout his life have on his relationships (especially with his children).

The Duke

Jim Broadbent plays a well-meaning social activist who takes issue with government spending money on a rich man’s painting instead of on the poor. His wife, played by Helen Mirren, isn’t always thrilled with her raconteur of a husband, but she stands by his side through family and political drama. A classic feel-good film about a cheeky old codger who nicks a painting to prove a point.

Emily the Criminal

A few unlucky turns (and a criminal record) keep Emily the art school dropout from securing gainful employment in NYC, so she gradually comes to believe that crime alone can pay off her student loans. Contains a realistic portrayal of a "dummy shopper” crime ring that uses stolen credit cards to purchase merchandise.

FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION

Severance

A thought experiment in what might happen if work/life balance was enforced by a chip implanted in the brain. “Severed” workers don’t remember anything that happens on the job — leaving them free to live their best life. The sinister elements creep into the story slowly, with the strangeness of Lumon rivaling the mysterious Dharma Initiative from Lost.

Westworld / Season 1

Now that four seasons have come and gone, it’s clear that the law of diminishing returns is in effect. Season one is an intricately crafted story with great characters and slowly-revealed worldbuilding. It has earned a place among the finest seasons of television ever produced, but the writers were never able to recapture the original magic.

House of the Dragon

Seven hells, this is a great show. House of the Dragon is a smoldering, time-jumping triumph. They pulled off three time jumps that required some characters to be cast four times. It shouldn’t have worked, but it did thanks to anchoring performances by Paddy Considine as King Viserys I and Matt Smith as Prince Daemon. The titular dragons are always welcome on-screen but aren’t the main attraction. Without dragons, HotD could be mistaken for a season of The Crown set during the Anarchy period of England (which served as a primary source of inspiration).

Stranger Things

Fantastic, nostalgic fun for the whole family. Stranger Things constantly references the ’80s, including Dungeons and Dragons, the mall, Cold War Russia, and heavy metal. It feels like an 80’s movie mashup at times, but it is more than the sum of its parts. The actors are all great, comedy is present throughout, and it is sometimes genuinely scary. At its heart, it is about standing by your friends to prevent the world’s end.

The Rings of Power

Widely criticized by Tolkien purists before release, it did enough to sway open-minded fans. The production values are extremely high. Costumes, sets, and effects are top-notch. At a cost of one million dollars a minute, everything looks incredible. The script, direction, and editing are uneven. Sometimes great, sometimes aimless. Morfydd Clark headlines a good cast with her nuanced portrayal of Galadriel. Overall, RoP does enough to warrant interest in a second season.

The Resort

Bittersweet sci-fi mystery that explores love, loss, and mental health.

DOCUMENTARY

The Way Down / Season 1

The Way Down is an expose on an minor evangelical celebrity who used calorie-counting and weight loss to control her followers. She was originally a Christian health guru whose “Weigh Down Workshop” connected over-eating to sin. Her business morphed into a church where she ruled with absolute power from her mansion. The series features a number of personal tragedies that resulted from her warped teachings. Season 2 doesn’t add anything significant and can be ignored.

Clotilda: Last American Slave Ship

One of the most powerful documentaries I’ve ever seen. Witness the descendants of the people carried to America on this vessel view it with their own eyes and talk about what it means to them.

Super Greed

Sixteen of the top European soccer teams tried to break away from their national leagues and form a “super league” to bring themselves more revenue at the expense of the rest of the football pyramid. Good for a few owners, bad for the game. Fan protests caused many teams to back out, but the dream is still alive for the most greedy (and indebted) owners.

Skandal! Bringing Down Wirecard

FIFA Uncovered

Qatar’s bid for the 2022 World Cup was won through bribery (proven by the DOJ in court), but this is nothing new. Beginning in 1978 with the awarding of the World Cup to Argentina’s military dictatorship, the World Cup has been awarded by FIFA to the highest bidder, and the highest bidder is often a unjust state with an image problem. FIFA officials see soccer as a business, and bribes are a core revenue stream.

Surprises

Bullet Train

Bullet Train is a fun action-comedy with a thin plot to connect the gags and set pieces. Don’t believe Rotten Tomatoes, it’s fresh!

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile

A musical adaptation of a 60-year-old children’s book has no right to be this good. Hits all the right notes.

Infinity / Voces8

Relaxing music for quiet moments.

Lives up to the equally brilliant Black Mile to the Sun. A standout album about grief from one of the most consistent indie rock bands of the Millenium.

The Crimson Corridor / ZAO

ZAO have been around since the early ‘90s, and they bring that experience and confidence to every track on their 13th LP. Songs revolve thematically around the titular Crimson Corridor at the back of the mind. Listen to the standout track “Croatoan” above.

Iridescent / Silent Planet

Produced and mixed by the band, Iridescent honors the best aspects of punk music. This album is much more personal than their previous efforts which earned them the “learncore” moniker. Many of the songs center on a mental health emergency the frontman suffered on tour and the fallout of that experience.

Phanerozoic Live / The Ocean Collective

Two albums, two shows, two formats, and two thumbs up. The trend of bands playing their albums front-to-back is a wonderful treat for fans. There is so much information that can be derived from watching a live performance in HD. How something is played is half of the experience.

Dune

It’s better if you know the story going in, but it can be understood by the unread. Great worldbuilding and production design.

Godzilla vs. Kong

Fun CGI monster battles that look good. Plot exists only to bring the monsters together.

Squid Game

Breakout hit of the year. 456 deeply indebted people fight each other for a cash prize by playing deadly versions of children’s games. What’s “really going on” is slowly revealed over Season 1, but there are plenty of mysteries left for Season 2.

No Time to Die

Caps an impressive run of Daniel Craig Bond films with a solid conclusion to his arc.

COMEDY

Only Murders in the Building

Martin Short and Steve Martin are back! Both play characters that are tailored to their unique comic legacies. Immediately interesting and remains so for the entire season.

Reservation Dogs Season 1

I have no reservations about recommending this gem. Starts out very fun, but there is a sadness permeating the show that brings it to a surprisingly emotional conclusion. Similar in tone to creator Taika Waititi’s “Hunt for the Wilderpeople”.

Search Party

Dark comedy starring deeply flawed individuals in somewhat absurd situations. No heroes here, but plenty of laughs.

Upload

This off-beat workplace comedy is about uploading people to cloud resorts, where their experiences differ according to their wealth. Upload playfully explores the divide between the promise of digital abundance and the ways greed drags the internet into the mud.

DRAMA

Dopesick

Brings the Oxycontin crisis home. Grounded stories are woven together to tell the tale of the Sackler family’s pursuit of profits über alles. Too heavy to binge but worth watching an episode or two at a time.

Pig

An indie film about the ways we respond to loss. Nicholas Cage works best when he is directed by someone with a strong vision and a good script.

King Richard

One can’t help but root for the man from Compton who wanted better for his children. Will Smith and the actors who portray young Venus and Serena are charismatic and relatable. Feel-good movie about overcoming adversity as a family. All hail King Richard!

Impeachment / American Crime Story

Soapy dramatization of the Lewinsky scandal. Great for millennials like me who weren’t interested in politics at the time. The story centers on Monica and goes beyond objectification to make her real — flaws and all. Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp is the highlight of the series.

Mare of Easttown

A gritty, realistic look at what it means to “be someone” in a small town. Easttown is about Mare, her family, and how her pursuit of justice impacts her community.

Judas and the Black Messiah

Fred Hampton and his Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party were targeted by law enforcement in the ’60s. Fred’s message was about poverty and class in addition to race. Nuanced performances by Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield underscore a surprisingly current biopic.

1883

If you enjoyed playing Oregon Trail, then you will love this dramatization. There is an incredible amount of action in this series. Harrowing experiences like Cholera, snake bites, river crossings, bandit attacks, and starvation are presented within the context of well-defined characters and their journey to find freedom in the West.
