A gender discrimination claim taken by a transgender childcare worker in Letterkenny has been dismissed by the Workplace Relations Commission.

According to the Irish Daily Mail, the worker challenged her dismissal from a childcare facility at the Craoibhín Community Enterprise Centre after failing her probation period in 2024.

The WRC heard that the termination followed complaints from parents relating to two separate incidents, including an allegation that a child was offered “a free kiss” as a prize and another where a child was released to an adult without their identity being checked.

The worker was suspended on pay while an investigation was carried out and subsequently argued that the initial complaint was indicative of gender discrimination. However, the WRC did not uphold the complaint.

A Midlands North West MEP claims Brazilian beef should not be allowed back onto the EU market because cattle due for slaughter this September would already have spent two years in the production system.

MEP Ciaran Mullooly says concerns remain over the use of antimicrobials and illegal growth promoters, and argues it is not possible to prove compliance for animals already nearing slaughter age retrospectively.

His position has been backed by former European Food Safety Authority chairman Dr Patrick Wall, who says Brazilian authorities cannot meet the September deadline set by the European Commission.

Mr Mullooly has written to the EU Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, calling for the current restrictions on Brazilian beef imports to remain in place:

The PSNI says it has no information to suggest a stabbing in North Belfast is a terrorist-related incident.

A Sudanese man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, after another man suffered serious injuries in the attack last night.

Police and politicians in the North are calling for calm, as social media posts call for protests.

The PSNI’s Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson’s given this update:

Meanwhile, Foyle MLA Mark H. Durkan says he has been inundated with calls and messages about a social media post claiming widespread protests and road closures across Derry tonight.

He says many people are worried about how any disruption could affect work, family commitments and travel.

Mr Durkan believes the anonymous post bears similarities to a previous AI-generated protest alert that caused concern but never materialised.

After speaking with police, he says they do not expect all the road closures being threatened, although a protest in the Tullyally area is likely.

He urged anyone taking part to respect others, saying people have a right to protest peacefully but not to cause chaos across local communities.

A Letterkenny Milford councillor has called for urgent talks with the National Transport Authority over how the town’s planned transport hub will operate.

Cllr Michael McBride says it has emerged that town bus services are not currently expected to use the facility when it is completed.
