The Pros and Cons of the Metal Cat Litter Box

Pros for Metal Box

• Less smell: Metal does not absorb odors in the same way that plastic does. If the smell is important to you, ditching plastic for stainless steel is a game-changer. I went 3 days without scooping because I actually forgot about the box. I couldn’t smell it. Even with the automatic scooping function of the robot, I could always smell the litterbox and needed to empty and disinfect it often.
• Easier to clean: It’s a metal box you can dump and hose off, and it’s fresh as a daisy again. The Litter Robot is much more tedious to disassemble and sanitize.
• More affordable: The average cost is between $40-100, depending on the size you get.
• Eco-friendly: The box can be recycled after its lifecycle, and you don’t need a plastic liner for the pan (there’s a nonstick surface on the bottom to prevent clumps from sticking). Get compostable bags to scoop into and save Mother Earth even more. (Amazon affiliate link)
• No tech, fewer issues: there’s nothing that can break and render the box useless.

Cons for Metal Box

• You have to scoop: I mentioned this above in the pros, but It’s easy to forget to scoop if the box isn’t in a room you frequent. The odor is much less than the Litter Robot, and I’ve forgotten a few times to scoop. Cats will tell you in other unpleasant ways when you’re slacking on your end of the bargain.
• Litter still tracks: I’m not sure there’s a box out there that solves this issue, but even with the higher sides, I still have to vacuum up litter.  
• Cost: While significantly cheaper than the Litter Robot, metal cat litter boxes can still be expensive compared to plastic boxes. The price of the boxes depends on the size of the litter box you get. I have 2 adult cats and opted for the extra large size, which cost about 50 bucks. (sidenote: I purchased this box with my own money, but the link is an Amazon affiliate link. If you purchase the box, you’ll be supporting Homejelly.)
• Non-Stick Surface: There is a nonstick surface on the bottom of the pan to keep the litter clumps from sticking to it. It makes the cleanup a breeze, but It’s unclear what the nonstick surface is made from and whether it’s potentially harmful. Given that it’s not a surface my cats are eating off (let’s hope not anyway), I figured the risk of toxicity was low.

Final Thoughts:

While I enjoyed the automatic scooping action of the Litter Robot, the short lifespan of the box and the hefty price tag weren’t optimal. The metal cat litter box won’t scoop itself, but I never need to worry about it malfunctioning. The litter box odor is almost non existent, is easy to clean, and is a more eco-friendly option. If you can deal with manual scooping ready, this might just be the statement piece your feline-filled home needs.

Ingredients You Will Need:

1. Distilled white vinegar
2. Baking soda
3. Essential oils (optional)
4. Water
5. A spray bottle

The Recipe:

Step 1: Mix 1 part distilled white vinegar to 1 part water.

This means that if you’re using a 16 oz. spray bottle, you’ll want to use 8 oz. of vinegar and 8 oz. of water. Measure and pour these into your spray bottle.

Step 2: Add a 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda.

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and gentle scrubber, making it a great addition to your cleaner. Be careful when adding the baking soda to your vinegar mixture, as it will react and create bubbles.

Step 3: Add essential oils (optional).

The smell of vinegar can be offputting to some. Adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil can help you make your home smell good as you clean. Lemon, lavender, and peppermint are all popular choices for their fresh and clean scents. You can also purchase blends of essential oil made for cleaning products like this one.

Step 4: Shake well.

This will help to mix all of the ingredients together. Shake the bottle before each use to ensure the ingredients are well combined.

How to Use Your DIY All-Purpose Cleaner:

You can use this DIY all-purpose cleaner much like you would any other all-purpose cleaner. Simply spray it onto the surface you want to clean, then wipe it off with a clean, dry cloth.

This cleaner is great for non-porous surfaces (see notes below), kitchen appliances, and more. It’s always a good idea to do a small spot test first to ensure the cleaner does not discolor the material.

A Few Notes:

• Vinegar should not be used on porous surfaces like marble or granite, as it can etch the surface. You can easily swap out the vinegar for Castille soap if you need a gentler cleaner for your countertops.
• Always shake your cleaner before use to ensure the ingredients are well mixed.

Today’s how-to is going to be up to each person’s discretion, of course, but I’m hoping it’ll inspire you to have a happily socially distanced Halloween!

Keys to a Safe Halloween

1. When prepping candy or individual bags, wear a face mask and gloves. 

2. Post “Stop Here” or “Grab a Candy from Yard” or “Get Ready to Catch!” signs to help guide trick-or-treaters.

3. Create rope barriers or secure front gates to prevent enthusiastic trick-or-treaters from knocking on your door.

4. Have fun and stay positive! We’re all new to this craziness, but it can be a Halloween to remember!

Here’s How to Safely Get Into the Spirit!

1. Fashion a PVC Pipe Candy Dispenser

This past summer, our creative neighbors fashioned a 20+ foot PVC pipe candy dispenser for their son’s 13th birthday. It was such a hit and helped keep his friends safe at the same time. You can make one of your own and even dispense candy into the window of cars! Visit your local hardware store or any box store to grab some PVC pipe and duct tape. Make it as long as you’d like, but at least 6 feet will do!

2. DIY a Candy Catapult or Slingshot

Why should the kids have all the fun?!? With stuff you’ve got at home and a quick trip outside, you can make your very own candy catapult or slingshot to dispense treats in a whole new and totally fun way! The STEPS to this method of giving candy is:

A. Post a sign to let kids and parents know they’ll be catching their candy.

B Put some kind of barrier (string, rope, or your own fence) to keep them from coming up to your door.

C. Leave a bell tied to something solid they can use to let you know they’ve arrived (unless you love to leave your door open or sit out front to greet trick or treaters as they come).

D. Tell them to get ready just before you fling the flavorfuls!

3. Add Lollipop Sticks to Candies and Plant Them

This clever idea works best with candy bar-type candies (minis will do). Using latex or rubber gloves, poke each piece with a lollipop stick  (find them at your local Michael’s store or your local bakery might have some). If you can’t find lollipop sticks, try chopsticks or bamboo skewers. If you don’t want to go to all the trouble, simply buy lollipop candies like “dum dums”, “Tootsie Pops” or regular one. Plant them all over your yard or place in a big bucket filled with sand or dirt. This is a fun and creative and safe alternative for leaving out bowls of candy (which has been discouraged by the medical community).

4. Build a Sweets Slide

Here’s where you can have some super fun with cardboard, plastic sheeting or old Hot Wheel tracks! Create a sweets slide to drop candy down a shoot, right into your trick-or-treater’s bags! Fun! By using a ladder and a couple of chairs, you can duct tape together a slide that will be safe and unforgettable!

5. Throw a Halloween Hunt

Think Easter Egg hunt and you’ve got yourself a whole lotta fun with costumes in October! I believe this could be a whole new thing, frankly! Plus, if you’re wanting to really play it safe with your household, this is the perfect solution. Simply hide candy all over your backyard, front yard, living room or wherever you’d like, have the kids (or adult kids!) dress up in their favorite costumes, put on some fun Halloween music and release the candy-finding Krack’n! 

6. Throw a Virtual Costume Contest and Halloween Happy Hour

If you’re playing it safe this holiday season, you can still get in the game by throwing a Zoom, Skype or Google Meet Halloween costume contest and Halloween happy hour! You’ll be able to enjoy everyone’s company and get super silly at the same time.

Organizing has become all the rage these days, especially during this crazy era of the Covid pandemic. I mean, why not? With so much chaos and uncertainty out in the world, it only makes sense (and quite a healthy response) to tidy up our lives at home. That’s why, when my multi-talented cousin, Matia Angeline sent me photos of her recent DIY endeavor, I just had to share it with y’all!

She created such a charming industrial spice rack that’s not only architecturally interesting, it uses reclaimed wood AND it’s functional as well. I mean…who doesn’t love a triple-duty DIY project?!? Check out your local hardware store, big box store, or shop for your pipe fittings online.

Now then, with so much admiration and crafty respect, I’ll hand over the mic to Tia.

“For this spice rack I used pipe fittings found on a wholesale hardware site. It was super easy to put together and my girlfriend helped me make sure they were tight and lined up straight. For the shelves I used reclaimed wood my best friend had in her backyard that I sanded and stained. I stained in 2 layers, the first layer was a grey and the second was a deeper brown. I absolutely love how it turned out! My next step will be getting uniformed jars for all my spices.”

So simple! And, you still have room to make it your own. Choose copper or brass pipe fittings, or even spray paint the pipes a color to play nicely with your kitchen decor. Don’t you just love the flavorful style of this fabulous spice rack? Now, then…here are the supplies and instructions to make one of your own.

Supplies:

• (4) 3/4″ floor flanges

• (4) 3/4″ x 3/4″ 90 degree elbow

• (8) 1/2″ x 3/4″ x 3/4″ Tee

• (10) 3/4″ x 4″ steel nipples (vertical pipes)

• (10) 3/4″ x 3″ steel nipples (horizontal pipes)

• (8) 3/4″ x 1″ steel pipe caps

• *(4) 3/4″ x 3″ x 24″ reclaimed wood (or leftover) 

• P60 sand paper

• sanding block

• wood stain or paint (choose a shade or color to your liking)

• (16) wall screws + anchors (if you don’t hit a stud)

• optional: (8) wall screws + anchors

*Note: the thickness, width and length of your spice rack shelves are totally up to you and your space needs. Adjust where needed.

Instructions:

1. Sand and stain or paint wood shelves. Customize the stain or paint color and width of this spice rack – it’s totally up to you and your needs ‘n style. Set aside to dry.

2. Screw together vertical nipple pipes, elbows and tees. Start at the top with the elbow, then 4″ nipple, then tee, 4″ nipple, tee, 4″ nipple, tee, 4″ nipple, tee, 4″ nipple, elbow. Repeat for other vertical side.

3. Screw together horizontal nipple pipes and caps. Start at the top elbow and screw in a 3″ nipple, then floor flange. Next screw in a 3″ nipple to each of the four middle tees, then cap off with a pipe cap. Finally, screw in the bottom horizontal nipple to the bottom elbow, then screw on floor flange. Repeat on other side.

4. Mark screw holes onto wall. Enlist a helper to hold one pipe side so you can mark through the top floor flange screw holes onto the wall with a pencil. Be sure to mark ALL four screw holes. Using a level, do the same for the other side. Tip! If your level is kinda short (or you’re using your iPhone), use a yard stick or piece of wood to expand the length between floor flanges, then place your level on top.

5. Attach top floor flanges. Start with one side first, If you need the anchors, insert those first, then attach floor flange with screws. Repeat on other side. 

6. Attach bottom floor flanges. Repeat the #5 steps.

7. Insert wooden shelves and spices!

8. Optional: if you’d like to secure your wooden shelves so they don’t shift or move, attach your straps over the horizontal nipples and screw into the bottom of each shelf. Donzies!

During this unfortunate shelter-at-home time of COVID-19, many fortunate people who are able to continue working remotely have done so via video chat. This temporary “new normal” has also given many a personal peek into our home lives, which has created a bit of a design challenge.

Unless you’re able to Zoom or Google Meet in a nicely designed home office, living room or bedroom, viewer(s) are often left looking at a background of clutter, undone laundry or perhaps just a blank wall. That’s not super exciting or inspiring, is it?!?

The other day, my husband Matt, whose new office is our garage, mentioned to me that he was tired of video chatting with high-profile clients having boxes, bins and sports gear stacked on shelves behind him. After the last “Are you sitting in a closet?” comment, he’d had enough.

We did some creative thinking and budget ‘n time considerations, then came up with this simple idea: create a beautiful background to impress! Not only did it hide all kinds of garage debris, it also created an impressive backdrop while chatting online with co-workers, clients, friends and family.

I found this already-the-perfect-color-and-slightly-weathered vintage stool on a buy and sell app for $25 and the summer orangey wrapping paper online. These key items, along with just a few supplies, made this how-to a citrusy-snap!

I found this cute vintage stool on a sell and buy site for just $25! Its color was PERFECT for the paper I bought. I also love the little shelf.

Supplies:

• wooden stool
• wrapping paper
• P160-P120 sandpaper + sanding block
• (optional) wood putty + putty knife
• paint + paint brush or sponge
• scissors + exacto knife
• Mod Podge Matte
• small paint brush
• rubber brayer or credit card or plastic scraper
• clear acrylic sealer
