Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please, or thank you, congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason.

Charles Plumb was a U.S. Navy jet pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison.
He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience.

One day, when Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up and said, "You're Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!"

"How in the world did you know that?" asked Plumb.

"I packed your parachute," the man replied.

Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. The man pumped his hand and said, "I guess it worked!"

Plumb assured him, "It sure did. If your chute hadn't worked, I wouldn't be here today."

Plumb couldn't sleep that night, thinking about that man.

Plumb says, "I kept wondering what he might have looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat, a bib in the back, and bell-bottom trousers.

I wonder how many times might have seen him and not even said 'Good morning, how are you?' or anything because, you see, I was fighter pilot and he was just a sailor." Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent on a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shrouds and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn't know.

Now, Plumb asks his audience, "Who's packing your parachute?"

Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day.

Plumb also points out that he needed many kinds of parachutes when his plane was shot down over enemy territory-he needed his physical parachute, his mental parachute, his emotional parachute, and his spiritual parachute. He called on all these supports before reaching safety.

A small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness to the stand in a trial -- a grandmotherly, elderly woman. He approached her and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know me?"

She responded, "Why, yes, I do know you Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a young boy. And frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a rising big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you."

The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do he pointed across he room and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?"

She again replied, "Why, yes I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. I used to baby-sit him for his parents. And he, too, has been a real disappointment to me. At this point, the judge rapped the courtroom to silence and called both counselors to the bench. In a very quiet voice, he said with menace, "If either of you asks her if she knows me, you'll be jailed for contempt."

A father never feels worthy of the worship in a child's eyes. He's never quite the hero his daughter thinks and never quite the man his son believes him to be and this worries him.

So he works too hard to try and smooth the rough places in the road for those of his own who will follow him

A father is a person who gets angry when the first school grades aren't as good as he thinks they should be. He scolds his son though he knows it's the teacher's fault

Fathers are person that give daughters away to other men who aren't nearly good enough so they can have grandchildren who are smarter than anybody's

Fathers make bets with insurance companies about who'll live the longest. One day they lose and the bet's paid off to the part of them they leave behind

I don't know where a father goes when he dies. But I've an idea~~that after a good rest~~he won't just sit on a cloud and wait for the girl he loved and the children she bore. He'll be busy there too repairing the stairs
oiling the gates,
improving the streets,

And some decisions turn out to be a huge mistake.
There are others though which turn out really good,
With everything working out just the way it should.

Certain people give the impression they don’t care,
Doing dangerous things which are based on a dare.
But when it gets down to the choice they have made,
They don’t realize there is always a price to be paid.

For each choice you make there is a consequence,
Everyone unable to now prevent the turn of events.
Once you decide and have put the choice in motion,
You must remember it was always your own notion.

Don’t make excuses saying it was your mom or dad,
Or say you wouldn’t have done it, but you were mad.
Did you really take enough time to think this through?
Because the choices you make will remain with you.

My friend don't take the time looking over my way,
You didn’t bother asking me first what I had to say.
Take a look in the mirror, you see the person there?
Now this one person was always completely aware.

You can keep trying daily to give the blame away,
The intent of your original choice with you will stay.
Before you decide try thinking it carefully through,

No one believes seniors . . . Everyone thinks they are senile. An Elderly couple were celebrating their sixtieth anniversary. The couple had married as childhood sweethearts and had moved back to their old neighborhood after they retired.

Holding hands they walked back to their old school. It was not locked, so they entered, and found the old desk they'd shared, where Andy had carved "I love you, Sally."

On their way back home, a bag of money fell out of an armored car, practically landing at their feet. Sally quickly picked it up, but not sure what to do with it, they took it home.

There, she counted the money-- fifty-thousand dollars.

Andy said, "We've got to give it back."

Sally said, "Finders keepers." She put the money back in the bag and hid it in their attic.

The next day, two FBI men were canvassing the neighborhood looking for the money, and knock on the door. "Pardon me, but did either of you find a bag that fell out of an armored car yesterday?"

Sally said, "No."

Andy said, "She's lying. She hid it up in the attic."

Sally said, "Don't believe him, he's getting senile."

The agents turn to Andy and began to question him.

One says: "Tell us the story from the beginning."

Andy said, "Well, when Sally and I were walking home from school yesterday . . . "

The first FBI guy turns to his partner and says,

This one kinda hits home as I grew up on a sawmill

Teaching Math in 1950: A logger sells a truck load of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math in 1960:A logger sells a truck load of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math in 1970: A logger exchanges a set "L" of lumber for a set "M" of money. The cardinality of set "M" is 100. Each element is worth one dollar. Make 100 dots representing the elements of the set "M." The set "C," the cost of production, contains 20 fewer points than set "M." Represent the set "C" as a subset of set "M" and answer the following question: What is the cardinality of the set "P" for profits?

Teaching Math in 1980: A logger sells a truck load of lumber for $100. Her cost of production is $80 and her profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

I Learned From Trees

It's important to have roots.

In today's complex world, it pays to branch out.

Don't pine away over old flames.

If you really believe in something, don't be afraid to go out on a limb.

Be flexible so you don't break when a harsh wind blows.

Sometimes you have to shed your old bark in order to grow.

If you want to maintain accurate records, keep a log.

To be politically correct, don't wear firs.

Grow where you're planted.

It's perfectly okay to be a late bloomer.

Avoid people who would like to cut you down.

Get all spruced up when you have a hot date.

If the party gets boring, just leaf.

You can't hide your true colors as you approach the autumn of your life.

It's more important to be honest than poplar.

Think of the trees and how simply they let go, let fall the riches of a season, how without grief (it seems) they can let go and go deep into their roots for renewal and sleep.

Did you know that drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately?

Did you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.

Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler

filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.

Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of

horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.

Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly!

Honey remedy for skin blemishes... Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.

Listerine therapy for toenail fungus. Get rid of unsightly

toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again!

Easy eyeglass protection... To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer... If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly. (Oven cleaner also works on wasp nests)

Smart splinter remover...just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All

over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.

Hunt's tomato paste boil cure...cover the boil with Hunt's

tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.

To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine... a powerful antiseptic.

Vinegar to heal bruises... Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar

and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the

blueness and speeds up the healing process.

Kill fleas instantly! Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Goodbye fleas.

Rainy day cure for dog odor... Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

Eliminate ear mites... All it takes is a few drops of Wesson

corn oil in your cat's ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.

Quaker Oats for fast pain relief! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in

the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

The Circus Is In Town! ~ Story

I remember one day, I think it was a Saturday, my sister and I we were outside at play. We both went inside the house to get a drink, our Mother and Dad were standing at the sink. Both of them had really big grins on their face, and ask us if we would like to go someplace. We had no idea of where we were going to go, and what we were going to see we didn’t know.

Our car pulled into the parking lot of the fairground, and there on a BIG banner it said,
The Circus Is In Town!
Trailers were parked everywhere and painted on the side, great big words you could not hide. Wringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus it said, all the words were painted in red.

There were vendors with cotton candy, peanuts and pop corn, Lot’s of funny clowns all running around each one of them tooting a horn. An organ grinder played and he had a little monkey too, And the cute little monkey would come running up to get money from you. He would run back very quickly to the man, to give him the money he had in his little hand.

We then finally went inside the BIG TENT, because this is where they held the main event. I can still hear the words so clear, you have no idea of their worth. “Ladies and Gentlemen Welcome To The Greatest Show On Earth.” The man was all dressed up, he had on a tuxedo and a top hat, I had never seen anyone dressed like that.

First three great big elephants would come out and do lots of tricks, There was also a man who could twirl plates on a stick. A little car would come out and it was puffing and smoking, we all knew they had to be joking. We would all count the little guys as they got out, there were ten in all running about.

The lion tamer came out to show us what he could do, he had a chair and a big whip too. He would snap his whip so fast in the air, it would make this loud noise, and give us all a scare. There was a trapeze with a great big net and at the bottom of it two people met. He was all dressed in white, her in blue, we had no idea of what they were about to do.

They both climbed up rope ladders to get to the top, the ropes seem to go on forever and did not stop. Two swings hung way up in the air, they both took a hold of one of the swings without a care. Oh what a wonderful sight it was to see, them swinging back and forth so gracefully. We didn’t know it was a part of the show, but all of a sudden she would just let go.

We all held our breathes and waited to see, but he caught her by her arms very carefully. Everyone there was clapping with pure delight, because believe me for all it had been quite a night. I can remember the sawdust and peanut shells on the ground, all the sights and all the sounds. All of the performers would come out to take a bow, and when it was over all we could say was wow!

The Green Frog ~ Poetry

Did you see that great big green frog over there,
the one just sitting on the lily pond without a single care.
I know I didn’t see him there before,
and I just this second came out our front door.

Maybe he is a charming prince, should I go see,
maybe all it takes is one little kiss from me.
But what if it isn’t the prince, but just an old toad,
will I get warts all over me as the story is told.

What if I kiss him and the spell was cast upon me,
my goodness what kind of creature could I turn out to be.
Would I be stuck in the spell for all of eternity,
maybe even having to jump from tree to tree.

I think I should just continue on my way,
because if my mother saw me what would she say.
Would she holler out to my dad,
I know one thing she would be really mad.

Because I was suppose to go to the store you see,
not be outside jumping around in some old tree.
I am sure she would call the police too,
and ask them just what she should do.

She doesn’t know how to explain what is in the tree,
and told the police, “It looks just like a monkey to me.”
I have this really long tail and it just keeps twitching,
Oh no, now I have developed this terrible itching.

Well, I never wanted to marry a prince anyway,
I promise I’ll never go near a green frog, not after today.
Please will someone wake me up from this dream,
if you don’t I think I am going to scream.

Women Vs. Men

EATING OUT:

If P.J., Melanie, Jan and Judi go out for lunch,
they will call each other Judi, Melanie, Jan and P.J..
But if Doug, Steve, Jim and Don go out for a brewsky,
they will affectionately refer to each other
as Fat Boy, Godzilla, Peanut-Head and Useless.
And when the check comes,
Doug, Steve, Jim and Don will each throw in $20 bills,
even though it's only for $22.50.
None of them will have anything smaller,
and none will actually admit they want change back.
When the girls get their check,
out come the pocket calculators.

BATHROOMS:

A man has five items in his bathroom-
a toothbrush, shaving cream, razor, a bar of Dial soap,
and a towel from the Holiday Inn.
The average number of items
in the typical woman's bathroom is 437.
A man would not be able
to identify most of these items.

GROCERIES:

A woman makes a list of things she needs
and then goes out to the store and buys these things.
A man waits till the only items left in his fridge
are half a lime and a soda.
Then he goes grocery shopping.
He buys everything that looks good.
By the time a man reaches the checkout counter,
his cart is packed tighter than
the Clampett's car on Beverly Hillbillies.
Of course, this will not stop him from going
to the 10-items-or-less lane.

SHOES:

When preparing for work,
a woman will put on a Mondi wool suit,
then slip on Reebok sneakers.
She will carry her dress shoes
in a plastic bag from Saks.
When a woman gets to work,
she will put on her dress shoes.
Five minutes later, she will kick them off
because her feet are under the desk.
A man will wear the same pair of shoes all day.

CATS:

Women love cats.
Men say they love cats,
but when women aren't looking,
men kick cats.

DRESSING UP: A woman will dress up to:
go shopping, water the plants, empty the garbage,
answer the phone, read a book, get the mail.
A man will dress up for:
weddings, funerals.

LAUNDRY:

Women do laundry every couple of days.
A man will wear every article of clothing he owns,
including his surgical pants that were hip
about eight years ago, before he will do his laundry.
When he is finally out of clothes,
he will wear a dirty sweatshirt inside out,
rent a U-Haul and take his mountain of clothes
to the Laundromat.
Men always expect to meet beautiful women at the Laundromat.
( This is a myth perpetuated by
reruns of old episodes of "Love, American Style." )

OFFSPRING:

Ah, children.
A woman knows all about her children.
She knows about dentist appointments, soccer games
romances, best friends, favorite foods,
secret fears, hopes and dreams.
A man is vaguely aware
of some short people living in the house.

I'm just as healthy as can be,
I have arthritis in both knees,
And when I talk, I talk with a wheeze.
My pulse is weak, my blood is thin,
But I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in.
All my teeth have had to come out,
And my diet I hate to think about.
I'm overweight and I can't get thin,
But I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in.
And arch supports I need for my feet.
Or I wouldn't be able to go out in the street.
Sleep is denied me night after night,
But every morning I find I'm all right.
My memory's failing, my head's in a spin.
But I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in.
Old age is golden — I've heard it said,
But sometimes I wonder, as I go to bed.
With my ears in a drawer, my teeth in a cup,
And my glasses on a shelf, until I get up.
And when sleep dims my eyes, I say to myself,
Is there anything else I should lay on the shelf?
The reason I know my Youth has been spent,
Is my get-up-and-go has got-up-and-went!
But really I don't mind, when I think with a grin,
Of all the places my get-up has been.
I get up each morning and dust off my wits,
Pick up the paper and read the obits.
If my name is missing, I'm therefore not dead,
So I eat a good breakfast and jump back into bed.
The moral of this as the tale unfolds,
Is that for you and me, who are growing old.
It is better to say "I'm fine" with a grin,
Than to let people know the shape we are in.

The snake bit the chicken and, with the poison burning in her body, she sought refuge in the chicken coop.

But the other hens preferred to expel her, fearing that the poison would spread.

The chicken limped away, crying in pain. Not for the bite, but for the abandonment and disdain of his own family, just when he needed it the most.

And just like that he walked away...... burning with fever, dragging a leg, vulnerable to cold nights.

With every step, a tear came down.

The chickens in the chicken coop watched her move away, until they saw her disappear into the horizon. Some said :

– Let her go... he will die far from us.

And when the chicken finally disappeared into the vastness of the horizon, they were all certain that she was dead.

Some even looked up into the sky, hoping to see vultures fly.

Time has passed.

Much later, a hummingbird came to the chicken coop and announced:

– Your sister lives! He lives in a cave not far from here.

She recovered, but lost a leg due to a snake bite.

He is having a hard time finding food and needs your help.

Silence followed. Then the excuses began:

– I can't go, I'm laying eggs...

– I can't go, I'm looking for corn...

– I can't go, I have to take care of my chicks...

So, one after another, they all rejected the request.

The hummingbird returned to the cave, without any help.

Time passed again.

Much later, the hummingbird returned with painful news:

– Your sister is dead... she died alone in the cave... there's no one to bury her or mourn her.

At that moment, a burden weighs on everyone. A deep complaint filled the chicken coop.

Whoever was laying eggs stopped.

He who searched for corn left the seeds behind.

Whoever took care of the chicks, for a moment, forgot about it.

Regret hurts more than any poison.

"Why didn't we go earlier? ", they asked.

And without measuring distance or effort, everyone left for the cave, crying and complaining.

Now they had a reason to see her, but it was too late.

When they reached the cave, they did not find the chicken...

They found only one letter that said:

> "In life, many times people don't cross the road to help you when you're alive,

but they cross the world to bury you when you die.

And most of the tears at funerals are not due to pain,

But to remorse and regret.
