I was doing a third pass of the crowd, trying to keep my anxiety in check, when I felt a presence behind me.
“Looking for someone?” a deep voice said.
Smooth like silk.
Edged with a hint of sarcasm.
The sound settled over me like a caress. A totally inconvenient caress. I knew who it was. Recognition came quicker than it should have, wasn’t like we’d talked a lot. Still, I knew the owner of that voice and decided to ignore him.
Or I tried to.
“No answer, huh? Guess I have to assume you’re here to see me.”
“In your dreams, O’Brien,” I said.
“Nah, in my dreams we’re alone, and there aren’t as many clothes.”
I bit back a laugh. “Nice. You practice that one?”
“Didn’t have to. Unlike how you must practice pretending not to like me.”
Again, I ignored him.
“Seriously, what’re you looking for?” he said.
“None of your business,” I replied.
“You just have to ask nicely.”
“I don’t need your help, O’Brien.”
“Suit yourself,” he said, and I could hear the grin in his voice, “though I got about a foot on you, shorty. Good luck finding anything in this crowd without me.”
The fact that he was right just made me loathe him more.
Begrudgingly, I turned…and found Dex O’Brien staring back at me. Piercing gray eyes. Granite cheekbones. Full lips. The grin was there as predicted, so was his ever-present scar that should’ve made him less attractive but didn’t. Yet another injustice in a world brimming with them.
“Okay, fine,” I said and crossed my arms. “Since you offered, I do need your help.”
“Sorry, can you repeat that?” he said.
My scowl deepened.
“Thought I must be hearing things.” He shrugged, crossing one arm over the other. That’s when I noticed the beer he was holding. Of course, he had a drink. Nearly everyone did. He was probably one of those guys who couldn’t have a good time without one. “It’s not every day the Maisie Hawthorne says she needs me.”
Rolling my eyes, I said, “Forget it, Dex. Sorry I asked.”
His lips stretched into a full-blown smile.
It should’ve been illegal for someone with Dex’s bad boy rep to have a smile that pretty.
“And she used my first name,” he said. “Sounds serious.”
“Whatever,” I muttered. “I should’ve known better. You wouldn’t lift a finger if I was dying in the middle of the street.”
He cocked his head. “Depends. What finger and what street?”
Before I could walk away, he placed a hand on my arm. I looked at it, taking in the blood-stained tape wrapped around his knuckles from the fight, then lifted my eyes to his.
“It was a joke, Hawthorne.”
Pulling back and rubbing away the warmth his touch left against my skin, I sighed. “I don’t have time for your jokes, O’Brien. I lost something important tonight.”
“What’d you lose?” he asked.
“My sister,” I said miserably.
Dex nodded. “What’s she look like?”
“Like a younger, happier version of me, I guess.”
“Ah Hawthorne, you’re breaking my heart.”
“Ha ha.”
“So, she’s pretty,” he said.
I blinked. Did he just…call me pretty? Dex “I hate everything about you” O’Brien? Maybe he got hit in the head one too many times.
Seeing my look of surprise, Dex lifted a brow. “I meant in an uptight, straight-laced, no-fun-ever kind of way. Don’t read more into it.”
“I wasn’t,” I lied.
“Sure, you weren’t.”

My eyes bulged and I scrambled to a seated position. “You can’t live here. You’re a guy. This is an apartment with women. Foreign exchange students. A bunch of Americans.” I spoke slowly, as if that would make him understand.
Jaime chuckled and looked down again. “Yes, I am aware, but this is my apartment now. I forgot to renew my housing paperwork last semester, and they gave my room away. This was all that was left. They told me I was living with Rory, Zoey, and Marissa. I take it you’re Rory?”
I nodded.
“I thought you were an Irish lad.”
I swallowed loudly, the saliva crawling down the back of my throat. Reaching across my bed to my nightstand, I downed a bottle of water. Cloudiness from the alcohol still in my system slowed down my brain’s processing ability, and I struggled to understand his words. “You can’t live here,” I said again.
“I wish I didn’t. Living with a bunch of Americans during my last year of college is the last thing I want to do, but it’s that or be homeless so I’ll suck it up.” He returned to his drawing and spoke to his paper. “Nice to meet you, Rory.” His amber eyes looked over, scanning my top half. “Fun time last night?”
My brain beat against my forehead, and I massaged my temples. “Yeah. Sorry if I woke you.”
“No worries. I spent the night with my old flatmates. They live downstairs, and I came up here to crash. I didn’t even hear you come in.”
I grabbed the hooded sweatshirt sitting at the end of my bed, and pulled it over my body. “Are you sure they said there was nowhere else? I mean, I don’t know, Jaime. You’re a guy, a stranger, really, and I have a boyfriend. I don’t think he will be too excited when I tell him my roommate’s an Irish guy.”
His liquid gold eyes looked me up and down. “I asked to be moved and they put me on a waiting list if some other American no-shows, but I want my old flat and my old flatmates. Unless they can squeeze me back in there, I’m staying here. So, there it is. An Irish bloke and an American lass living together. That’ll make a good story for the grandkids. Promise, you won’t even know I’m here.”

Robert tapped his Stetson on his head, handed the pup to Rita, and pulled his cell phone from the inside pocket of his jacket. “Hang on.” He tapped the screen with his thumb and held the cell to his ear.
“Who are you calling?”
Robert held up his finger. “She’s not answering.”

“Syd.” He made another call. “Hey, Trey, where’s my sister?”

“You’re the nutrition,” he said shamelessly. “I’ll drink your blood daily.”
“Bloody hell! No way!” I shouted.
“We can do it the hard way or the easy way,” he threatened. “For your contribution of blood, you’ll receive good benefits besides my protection, food, shelter, and good pay.”
“I don’t need your protection, sir,” I said. “There’re beings much worse than you out there, but I can protect myself well.”
He dropped me like a sack of potatoes, a magnificent maroon building looming ahead. We stared at each other. I massaged my stiff hip, and he narrowed his eyes in displeasure.
He snorted. “I’m one of the most powerful, terrifying superior beings in this realm.”
“No offense, sir, but I’m not interested in whose dick is the biggest,” I said, then hurried on at his scowl. “Let’s get down to business then. You won’t drink from me daily. My blood is very precious, and I don’t give it away easily. We can try for once a week.”
“Twice a week,” he said firmly. “That’s my final offer.”
“Fine, but I must insist on you not taking more than necessary during each session, sir.”
“You drive a ridiculous bargain, little Bob,” he growled. “If other servants dared to be so insolent, they’d be dead at my feet by now.”
He meant it. I should never forget for one second that he was a predator.
“You said you promoted me to squire,” I argued. “Besides, I have a rare commodity that’s worth more than gold.” I pumped my fist to drive the point home. “I get to call the shots!”
“Do you now?” he asked drily.
“Being fed upon isn’t my favorite,” I said testily. “I can’t believe that I’m even agreeing to this!”
“Then I must have one more test run and see if this commodity is worth all the trouble,” he said, and he brought my wrist up before I could pull away and sank his fangs into my throbbing vein.

Ellio found a lot of interesting things poking around dumpsters in the Downs, but this was the first time he’d found a foot. Peeking out from under the bin, the glossy black nail polish shimmered from the light of a distant streetlamp. Getting over his initial shock, the young man breathed a sigh of relief when his further investigation revealed that the foot was still attached to a leg. Choppy black bangs fell in front of her eyes. Her face was flushed and smudged with dirt. Ragged gasps shuddered through her, breath puffing out as little clouds in the chill air. At least she was still breathing. Bodies sometimes turned up in the Downs, but not as often as one might expect.
What on Elorah had happened to her?
The young woman shivered.
Ellio frowned. “Hey, you all right?” He shook her leg gently.
The biomesh cloth of her pants alone was probably worth more than he made in a month. He cringed at the thought of getting grease on them, but then again, the young woman was passed out under a dumpster. Clearly, she had bigger problems. But just to be sure, he wiped his hands along the thighs of his coveralls a few times.
“Hey, c’mon.” Ellio craned his neck underneath the dumpster to see her better. “You can’t stay here.” He gripped her leg more firmly and tugged. The woman’s head lolled back and forth limply; her eyelids fluttered but remained closed.
After getting no response, Ellio partially crawled beneath the rusty trash receptacle. “’Scuse me, lady,” he whispered, sliding his hands lightly underneath her torso and dragging her out from under her makeshift shelter. He was careful not to let her bump her head on the way out.
Ellio kept his hands to respectable areas, but a blush still crept up his neck as he cradled the young woman against his chest. She looked about his age, maybe a year younger. Ellio had just turned seventeen a few weeks back. He couldn’t help noticing she was beautiful, with full pink lips and a cute little nose smattered with freckles. She had golden eyeshadow like wings around her eyes. Ellio swallowed. Brushing her bangs back from her face, he held a calloused hand against her forehead.

The reader can picture the characters and know about their background from how they speak. The author handles themes that are as relevant and sensitive to contemporary readers as these have been to characters since 1903. This is one of those novels that compel readers to think about one of the pressing problems of America: the color line. And it also asks serious questions about identity. Triumph: A Novel of the Human Spirit is a powerful testimony that we can outgrow the pettiness that defines people by their color and see a human spirit behind the shade of skin.

The Love Birds series is currently a planned trilogy. Initially, I had planned to write When Cardinals Appear as a standalone, but then I received a really sweet rejection from an agent who noted how the story spanned multiple genres, specifically romance, women’s fiction, and family saga. The last genre caught my attention, and I thought: why not continue the saga? After all, Lanie’s brother, Steven, is engaged in the first book, and her father, Max, has been a bachelor for a while. Why not give them their own stories?

Book two is called When Swans Dance. It’ll pick up in the summer after the first book ends where Steven and his fiancée, Rose, are planning their wedding. Steven suffers a health event that changes the trajectory of their lives. The book was inspired by a YouTube video where a swan was reunited with its mate after being ill and the two performed an elaborate dance. Like Cardinals, Swans will feature a subplot about the signature bird.

For the final book in the series, I plan to write it as more of a traditional romance. Max, will get a second chance at love, and we’ll get to see whether he rises to the occasion or squanders the opportunity. Readers will get updates on what’s going on with Lanie and Steven in the background while their father takes center stage. The current working title is When Doves Lament and was inspired by the song “Lonesome Dove” by Trisha Yearwood.

I chose the series title to focus on the romantic aspects of each story as the species of birds mentioned in each title, for the most part, mate for life.

Katie Eagan Schenck writes sweet romance and women’s fiction that warms the heart and gives all the feels. She has an MFA in creative writing from Queens University of Charlotte and her debut novel, A Home for Christmas, was released in October of 2022. When she's not writing she's either drafting regulations for the federal government, baking delicious treats, or binging Hallmark movies. She jerked her wrist, attempting to pull away, but he wouldn’t release her, instead stepping closer. Her heart thumped against her rib cage, threatening to bust out and desert ship. “Last night, you seemed angry that I had the amulet. And then you came at me so fast… Look, I’m… I’m… I don’t follow the old religions. “Mom, Dad,” I whispered, taking a deep breath, “I miss you so much. I need your help now more than ever before.” I knew that coming here today was necessary – I needed their guidance, I was so confused.
I sat there and looked around the well-tended lawn and the sun’s reflection against the pond nearby. I kneeled down to replace the old bouquet with the new, trying to avert my eyes, but they were anchored on rereading the etched inscription for the millionth time:

When we reached the camp, a circle of ten or so men surrounded another, who quickly shifted from one man to the next, cussing and threatening them with a hayfork. In the center of the circle, two small figures lay naked on the ground. Their hands and legs were spread wide apart and appeared to be tied to tent stakes. They weren’t moving.
Ben was coughing uncontrollably when he reached us. “Dear Lord,” he said in between coughs. “What the hell happened?”
“One of the boys gave a can of beans to Johnny-behind-the-rock without asking his daddy first.
They’ve been out there for over an hour now,” Helen said.
“Where did he get a hay fork?”
“He used it for a tent pole. Tore down the whole thing to get to it.”
I alternated my stare between the man jabbing at the spectators and the two small bodies on the ground. I didn’t want to get stabbed, but somehow, we had to get to those boys, and none of the other men seemed too keen on making a move.
Ben whispered something to Helen, and I heard her say under her breath, “If Ranger finds out we have a gun—”
“No.” I reached for Ben’s arm. “You’ll get fired. You can’t do that.”
Ben shook his arm loose. “Those boys are gonna die before Ranger gets here. I can’t let that happen.”
I could see the boys clearly now. They couldn’t be more than six or seven. Their skin was as red as a cock’s comb. I walked toward the circle, trying to focus on the man with the hay fork while others in the crowd tried to reason with him to no avail.
Too much going on and not enough sleep, or maybe I wasn’t thinking clearly, but as he turned his back to me to jab his weapon at someone else, I broke the circle and tackled him from behind. We hit the rocky ground together, me landing on top, the hay fork a few feet away.
The man struggled against me, and I hit him square in the temple with a closed fist. Then another. And another. I felt all the anger inside of me boiling up—anger at my father, at Billy, and even at Grace for dying on me, and I hit him again. He bucked and threw me off him, swearing as he rolled over. He tried to get to his feet, but I kicked him hard in the abdomen with my booted foot, throwing him back to the ground. I grabbed the hay fork and raised it high over my head, directly above him. His face tensed, and his dark eyes filled with anger.
As I lowered the fork, a strong hold around my midsection pulled me away, and I missed my mark by inches. “That’s enough, son,” Ben said from behind me. Four men held the offender down and, after untying the boys, hog-tied him with the same rope to keep him until Ranger arrived.
The boys’ skin had started to blister, and they were covered with red ants. I turned away, unable to look at them, and focused on Helen. “Are they alive?”
“Barely.”
Author Note: Johnny-behind-the-rock was mentioned in one of the many oral histories related to Ragtown. Too old to be employed on the dam project, he lived alone behind a large boulder with nothing to his name but the clothes he wore. He rarely came from behind his rock, moving throughout the day to stay in a shady spot. He rarely spoke and survived on what others gave him. He was known only as Johnny-behind-the-rock. I don’t know his story, I’m not sure anyone does, but I’m sure it was tragic to live as he did. I wanted to remember him in some way, even if it is only a mention in a work of fiction.
The ant scene is a fictionalized account gleaned from a true event that took place in Ragtown. I included it to show the cruelty that desperation can breed.

Depending on what characters decide to sit beside me on a particular day, I may write historical fiction or quirky, dark humor.

Six feet tall with his black curly hair adorably too long, he had a wiry build and bore a striking resemblance to the Dutch actor of Tunisian descent, Marwan Kenzari. He was too close now. She could see the irises of his sharp, dark eyes and smell the alluring scent of black currant and bergamot in the cologne he often wore.
“You know I can get out of this hold if I want to.”
“Go ahead and try,” he said with a soft smile. His fingers tightened fractionally, and they had a stare-off.
Most men were no match for her, but not someone with Hossam’s skill, whose strength and agility meant he could pin and hold her in place, no matter how hard she fought.
“Let me go, Hossam.” She let the hardness in her voice be a warning.
He sobered. “I cannot do that, habibti.”
