Monsoon Withdrawal Update 2024:

The monsoon protects India from the extreme summer heat and provides almost 80% of the annual rainfall from June to September month. The rainfall helps increase groundwater levels, rivers overflow, agriculture process begins altogether it brings hope and happiness to the face of every Indian.

As of now, we have arrived in mid September. The monsoon withdrawal begins from extreme northwest india from west Rajasthan on 17th September and gradually completes its cycle around 15th October.

Monsoon Withdrawal Criteria:

Initial Withdrawal:

Timing: Not attempted before 1st September.

Criteria:

Cessation of rainfall activity for 5 consecutive days.
Establishment of an anticyclone in the lower troposphere (850 hPa and below).
Significant reduction in moisture content, as observed from satellite water vapor images and tephigrams.

Further Withdrawal:

Criteria:

Spatial continuity in withdrawal.
Continued reduction in moisture, as observed from water vapor images.
Prevalence of dry weather for 5 days.

Timing: Complete withdrawal from the southern peninsula and the entire country typically occurs only after 1st October, once the circulation pattern indicates a change from the southwesterly wind regime.

Current Weather Conditions:

Deep Depression Over West Bengal

Deep Depression over Bangladesh and Gangetic West Bengal:

Location: Near latitude 22.9° N, longitude 89.2° E, about 90 km northeast of Canning and 100 km east-northeast of Kolkata.
Movement: Moving west-northwest at 23 kmph, expected to continue as a deep depression until evening, then weaken to a depression as it moves across Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand.
Impact: Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding in affected regions.

Monsoon Trough:

Location: Extends from Ganganagar, Hissar, Delhi, Bareilly, Bahraich, Patna, and Bankura to the deep depression over Bangladesh.
Impact: Enhanced monsoon activity along its path, leading to increased rainfall in these areas.

Cyclonic Circulation over Saurashtra:

Location: At 3.1 km above sea level.
Impact: Possible rainfall and localized weather disturbances in the Saurashtra region.

Western Disturbance:

Location: A trough in the middle troposphere roughly along Long. 68°E to the north of Lat. 32°N.
Impact: Weather changes and possible precipitation in northern India, particularly in hilly areas.

Monsoon Withdrawal 2024 Update:

Anticyclone Development:

Possibility: Very low over Rajasthan and nearby regions for the next 10 days.

Impact: This means that typical high-pressure systems that could signal the start of monsoon withdrawal are unlikely to develop soon.

Moisture Availability:

Condition: Abundant moisture is present. Due to the likelihood of a deep depression carrying moist air into the region.

Monsoon Commencement:

Current Status: Unlikely to begin its withdrawal journey in the next 10 days. We’ll need to wait for a few more days to get a clearer picture of the timing for monsoon withdrawal.

Forecast: Moisture is expected to persist over Rajasthan until at least 20th September. Signs of monsoon withdrawal might not be apparent until around 20th September.

There was a weather phenomenon known as the shear zone present over Maharashtra, elongated towards the Arabian Sea. The wind flows from east to west In the northern part of the shear zone and moves in the opposite direction i.e. from west to east in its southern region.

The middle region is always silent as in there is no wind movement. This is where the chances of intense thunderstorms are always there. Today Chinchwad saw a Thunderstorm and convective rains between 3:45pm to 4:45pm. Due to no wind movement, these clouds remain in the same location and dump massive rains.

This led to Chinchwad observing a cloudburst event. The temperature too dropped from 33.3C to 23.9

Heavy Rains To Lash Kerala On 24th May

Kerala Rains to continue

For the past 4 days Kerala and some parts of southern Tamilnadu were lashed by moderate to heavy rains, few places witnessed very heavy rains which caused flooding. It’s because the twin weather systems have an impact on both the states. First is a low-pressure area off Kerala coast and second is the well-marked low-pressure area over west-central & south bay of Bengal.

For 24th May, the rains are likely to continue in both the states. Kerala is likely to get widespread rains whereas rains will pause in northern Tamilnadu. The southern tip of Tamilnadu will receive moderate to heavy rains. Southern & central parts of Kerala will get heavy rains, isolated places might get very heavy rains. North Kerala will mostly get light to moderate rains accompanied by thunderstorms. Post-24th May rains will also reduce in Kerala and the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu.

Heat Wave to Continue In Rajasthan, Low to intensify into Depression Over Bay of Bengal

In the last 24 hours, the southern part of India saw below-average temperature whereas the Rajasthan and west-central India observed heat waves. Kerala and Tamilnadu observed very good rainfall. There is a well-marked low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining south bay of Bengal and is expected to concentrate into a depression early tomorrow morning.

Monsoon

In the last 24 hours, the monsoon didn't progress but in the next 24 hrs, the conditions are more favorable for further advancement of Southwest monsoon in the remaining parts of Andaman and Nicobar Island, Andaman Sea, and some more parts of South And east-central Bay of Bengal. The Heat Wave in Northwest & parts of West India

Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions will continue in Rajasthan and parts of Chhattisgarh, West Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi till 27th May. The dry northerly winds will continue to keep this region super hot. People in this region should remain hydrated, and stay indoors during afternoon hours.

In the below images, we can see that most parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, west m.p, and parts of north Madhya Maharashtra observed 1.6 to 4.5 C above average temperatures. Comparatively southern india measured largely below-average temperatures.

Well Marked Low-Pressure Area in the Bay of Bengal

According to IMD, the well-mark Low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal will concentrate into a depression early tomorrow morning. Further, it will intensify into a deep depression and cyclonic storm by the early morning of 25th May, further, it is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by 26th May evening and cross between West Bengal and Bangladesh coast. What we think is the door is open for the storm to make landfall between Odisha and Bangladesh coast. As soon as the well-marked low pressure area forms into a cyclonic storm then we will have an idea of the exact track of the cyclonic storm.

The impact of the cyclonic storm on the Southwest monsoon is not going to be huge as it is going to be beneficial for the Southwest monsoon to progress into the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and further cover some more parts of the Bay of Bengal.

We are waiting for IMD to officially announce the southeast monsoon onset in Kerala. They have predicted that the Southwest monsoon will make an onset in Kerala around 31st May +/- 4 days.
