What's so good?

Two of my favorite artists from the last ~3 years are Fred again.. and Jamie xx. No, those double periods in the previous sentence weren't a typoe - Fred again.. is just special like that.

Anyway, those two artists fall in the genres glitch house and alternative dance. I know that because I've been knee deep generating a genre detector for the last 3 months on SubmitHub. And so when BRANDANO's "Life g/on" came on, well.. it was right up my alley (those two periods were intentional. Because I'm funny like that).

What's so good?

This house music duo is one of those acts where you hit play, then sit back and relax. These consummate professionals have the genre covered. With numerous releases under their belt, there's quality track after quality track to choose from.

Lately, it's been "Crystal Maze" that's been holding my attention. It's subtle yet powerfully hypnotic, and what more does one need?

Best believe I'm moving from this track, off their See You When You Get There album, onto their downbeat concept album, Needledrop. So don't be surprised if you see more of their songs appearing on Indie Shuffle soon.

What's so good?

SOFI TUKKER does it again. They bring the heat, the pulse and the audacity with "Barthelona".

SOFI TUKKER has no way of stopping their impossible run of glorious bops. From "BOBA" to the heatwave that is "Barthelona" their streak is going hard. "Barhelona" is exactly what is written on the label, a hot and sweaty summer dance track that melts everything in its vicinity. It kicks off hard, there is no intro, there is no warm-up, we are all sweating together in the phenomenal heat box SOFI TUKKER has designed, and we are begging for more.

"Barthelona" is summer club culture at its best.

What's so good?

South Korean collective Balming Tiger pumps up the quirk and vibes with "Oui" a bass guitar character piece with all the charm.

Balming Tiger is somewhat of an enigma when it comes to genre, describing themselves as a K-Pop collective, but dropping tracks that not only experiment beyond the fun sentimentalities of that genre, but also smashes it into a mold of Jazz,Funk and soft rock ideas. "Oui" is is the greatest example of this so far, a recent single from their concept album, Gongbu, the track is heavy on the bass string, fun character play with vocals, and then about halfway through it all just cuts out into a prog rock lament, it's experimental, vast and fun.

Balming TIger has my attention and I can't wait for these crazy scientists to throw more paint against the wall.

What's so good?

This one's a fairly difficult track for me to tag. It's indietronica? Or wait... indie pop? Nah, it's indie electronic. Oh wait, is that a bit of future garage?

I guess my inability to pigeonhole it is a testament to Denmark-based Retro Kid's songwriting abilities. That, and the fact that we keep on featuring his songs on our website. Clearly he's onto something ood!

There's a new EP coming soon, which leads me to believe this won't be the last time we enjoy a little bit of Retro Kid on Indie Shuffle.

What's so good?

Put your name down, flip it, and reverse it because Winn Winn has entered the chat with "give af" -- a tongue-in-cheek, technicolour display of just how few f*%s this married duo gives.

In short, "give af" is a fun ride. It carries the infectious energy of SOFI TUKKER, pairs it with Madonna-esque vocals, and sprinkles in a touch of Swimming Paul's production style. Throw all of that in the oven and you're left with a listenable gem.

If you want to take life seriously, you're most welcome, if not, just hit play.

What's so good?

Doc Rombus is a self-taught musician with a keen sense of introspection and reflection. It's always refreshing to come across a humans who makes use of their coordinates in the universe, chewing on existence, changing its shape and then sharing it with us.

"Shaken Up" is a refreshing track. It begins subtly, with washed-out vocals that are treated in a near-perfect way, creating a distinctive sound that's worthy of repeat listens. Midway through, the song tears open into a fuller soundscape, with deeper percussive elements and intriguing vocal processing that elevate the experience.

With its evolving production, "Shaken Up" is a track that rewards your attention and lingers long after it ends.

What's so good?

Goldroom is a pretty classic Indie Shuffle name. He's pulled off some of our more popular blog posts over the years, including this CHVRCHES remix and this cover of Fleet Foxes. Not to mention the many original singles of his we've covered.

Naturally, it makes sense that with a new Goldroom song should come a new Indie Shuffle post. And so I present to you "California Kiss," a fun nu-disco track that came out ~3 weeks ago.

It's one of those songs that'd go perfect with a sunset drive in a convertible. I'm not exactly doing that, but I am currently vsiting my brother in California. So, I'm halfway there - all I need to do is find that convertible!

What's so good?

There's something about this song that does a great job capturing the subject matter.

It's about mental health and the struggle between a father and son. So yeah, heavy stuff - and it needs a heavy song to really give it weight.

Fortunately Rowena Wise has the heavy stuff covered. The Melbourne-based Aussie's brand of indie rock is thoughtful, deliberate, and hits all the right melodic progressions - pulling on the heart-strings of the listener.

Whenever I see Tycho releasing any type of material, my heart skips a beat. His latest song, "Another Wave," is a classic sunset-driving sonicscape. I usually enjoy his vocal-less music the most, but Sea Lemon elevates this track to the next level with her airy, dream pop singing. Give this song a listen, and drive off into the orange clouds.

Over the years, my measure of whether a song is worth sharing has come down to one simple formula: if I wake up with it in my head, it's probably worth a share. And since I'm sharing Metic's remix of "Honey Bomb," it's safe to say I woke up with it on a loop.

If you are like me and yearn for the impossible of a Ratatat comeback, this is as close as you're going to get. "BEO" is the latest teaser single from E.VAX, aka Evan Mast, who is one half of the legendary electronic rock back Ratatat. 

This single is Ratatat-coded from the jump with some Mast sauce. You'll immediately be glazed with a soft, familiar crooning guitar in background with clean, stripped back percussion at the foreground. Effects sweep in and out, bringing you to a sonic world that is both calming yet exciting.

Lykke Li lights up our early 2010 hearts with "Lucky Again," a booming pop anthem.

"Lucky Again" is the track in your room on loud while you lie in your bed, writing in your diary. It's intimate and youthful. "Lucky Again" feels like early 2010s Nelly Furtado or Miley Cyrus' pop but gives it a modern and complex twist. The lyricism is heartfelt and real, the track design is vast and complex, but the theme is relatable and easy.

It's a delicate track with an air of sophistication, balanced by a youthful, feel-good energy.

What's so good?

If your parents indulged you with children's stories as a kid, chances are you know the story and orchestral piece called "Peter and The Wolf." Rapper phenom Billy Woods, along with Mickey Diamond, team up with producer Sam Seed to tackle their interpretation of this classic tale. 

You'll hear haunting woodwinds through the track, a homage to the orchestral aspect of the original story. Apart from that, it's almost impossible to tell this is an interpretation, unless you lose yourself in the lyrics. Billy Woods is wordsmith prodigy and Mickey Diamond adding his deep bars makes "Peter and The Wolf" a much darker and ambiguous story.

Okay, the moment I heard this song, I got really excited because I recognized that the instrument being sampled at the start is likely a khaen. Why do I know that? Because Jeremy Ragheb's "Demey" introduced me to it!

Bonobo of course breathes life into it in a way that only Bonobo can. "Me and You" builds in stages, all on top of a danceable, stuttering percussion line. It has hints of Jamie xx or Fred agin..., but steers things in a faster, arguably more fun direction.

Overall, stoked to have this one in the feed.

At this point, James Blake needs no introduction. This grammy-winning singer and producer is highly sought after in the music scene. Take this tune "Death of Love", for example. This song is off of his latest album Trying Times, and it showcases his masterclass production and singing. 

It's a heavy tune, with minimal percussion and haunting backing vocals. With a good pair of headphones, it's almost like he's personally whispering in your ear about his past heartaches. Prepare to connect with his deeper, more vulnerable side.

Ok hear me out. If you're the type of person to look at the tags and "sounds like" before listening to a new song, you're probably thinking "this mix of bands and tags don't make any sense". Well, that's where you're wrong kiddos. 

"And Where Is the Heart? I've Searched My Entire Home" is just the tip of the iceberg of the Fire-Toolz's debut album on the legendary Warp Records. Combining the elements of vaporwave and metal, Fire-Toolz creates songs like this that has the harsh, violent sides with the a softer vaporwave breeze to cool things over from time to time. Just image: guitar chugging on a surfboard whilst careening through the 96' Netscape interwebosphere.

Frantic drums boom. Off kiltered guitars jam in conjunction with a noise storm, methodically pausing and crashing back into the scene with the raw vocals pushing the song even further. This will surely spike your heart's BPM in a good way. Whether you are in an intense car chase or heroing it up by fighting off 50 baddies at once, let this song be your high-octane score.

"I've built the tolerance of a hippopotamus " is a line that will replay in my head for weeks. it's fun, earwormy, and that is where Asal has achieved something great . They have designed a song around a serious theme in a way that keeps me coming back for more while also understanding the heavy themes within its space. "Tolerance" is Asal opening their heart to us, but they can't help but do it in the most stylish way possible.

What's so good?

Tom Misch slows down the world with "Echo From The Flame," a warm and calm midnight track. 

"Echo From The Flame" is a lonely room in a big house, and you only have the heat of the fire keeping you company. Their soft track from their now-released album, Full Circle, feels intimate, soft-spoken, and honest. Far removed from Tom Misch's charm, it feels more like a beautiful elegy: a montage of magic and calm. Tom Misch has given in to his soft solo energy and "Echo From The Flame" makes me hungry for more, more soft spoken power and earnest yearning.

Like a respectful director, BUNT takes the beauty of Temper Trap's original "Sweet Disposition" and remixes it for a new age with "What If You Fly," and the two minds mold into a beautiful experience. 

BUNT's reimagining of Temper Trap's classic feels more like a tribute than anything; it feels like a love letter to a sound we all miss, an old family member that had gone and left, and now we all just sit with the memories. "What If You Fly" is hopeful and powerful and a beaming electro dance track that gripped my soul.

Temper City's "Self Aware" is one for the homepage. It captures attention with every spin and so I trust it will capture yours too. 

It's got that indie rock and alt rock edge. It plays it cool and let's you come to it.

What's so good?

I don't know where you're reading this from, but I'm in the middle of a torrential downpour at the time of writing this. It couldn't have been more perfect timing because "Spider Song" is a track that really shines during intense, inclement weather. 

The songs gently lets you into flyingfish's world with nice, clean guitaring and airy vocals. Then, suddenly, you get sucker punched with a wave of reverb and distortion, the special sauce for any Shoegaze fan. The heavy lyrics also add a ton a bricks to the already emotional instrumentation. Settle in, and let the storm of sounds take you.

What's so good?

It's not every day that you stumble across a song of genuine hit quality before it's even registered a few thousand streams. There are a few categories that come to mind. There are tracks sitting in the four-digit range that are good, but whose relative anonymity is probably warranted. Then there are others, also in that range -- around 5k streams or so -- that simply haven't been discovered yet but are almost certain to blow up. Kind of like Fcukers when Jason and I first heard them, to give a more recent example. Most of the time, though, you find solid tracks already sitting somewhere between 10k and 100k+ listens.

So why lay all this out? Because "stickman" doesn't seem to have any registered plays on Spotify yet. And beyond that, it's of the highest quality, with serious potential. It's the kind of discovery you only make when you wander deep into the indie music maze. I found this one buried in a playlist by Alice Costelloe, who popped up on my radar at The Great Escape -- a grassroots music conference and festival held annually in Brighton.

ryan malcs is a London based musician who is also a producer, songwriter, and occassional keys player for the massive Wolf Alice . I'm not surprised the song is this good and has had so little promotion. I would consider that the Digital Age's version of humility. I'm genuinely revved up to dig in to his EP, go slowly.

Puma Blue brings us a hypnotic song aptly named "Hold You." It's an emotional sledgehammer to the soul via airy, lingering vocals and haunting sonic ambience. It's one of the songs to listen to during a torrential downpour while you get lost in your own thoughts. His signature crooning caresses you like a gentle bear hug with a dark, gloomy cloud hanging above. But in the end, you are only hugging yourself. It's beautifully melancholic.

"Boru" is one of the latest rips from the Indonesian groove armada called Thee Marloes. This song takes you back to those warm memories of barbeques on a hot summer day, or that elusive glory nap on the side of a grassy hill those many years ago, stress free. They sing in both English and Indonesian, but you don't need to know Indonesian to understand where they're coming from. "Boru" is an absolute heart warmer.
