Create a photographic work of art made of silver and experience having your photo taken over 150 years ago.

WHAT IS TINTYPE?

Create a photograph made of silver, a picture rendered on metal and an image which is completely unique. Handmade from start to finish. The Tintype Studio use a darkroom process invented by the Victorians combined with state of the art lighting to create one-off, objects of beauty.

Each plate is handmade in the darkroom; it’s carefully coated in collodion and silver nitrate to create a light sensitive plate. The plate is placed in James's Victorian camera and the picture is made using modern flash lights and an exposure of a few seconds.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY?

James Millar (one of only a handful of Tintype practitioners in the UK)
and his team Ben Wallace and Heather Tyrrell will be with you for the two hour session. Ben runs the darkroom, crafting the plates, developing and fixing the images whilst James composes the pictures and designs the lighting. Heather art directs and runs the shoots, making the experience unforgettable.

You'll be taken to the on-site dark room and watch your image transform in the fixing bath.

This experience for up to two people is an ideal couples experience, perfect for those with a love of photography and art. James will talk you through each stage of this fascinating process. You'll leave with two beautifully varnished 10 x 8 inch plates rendered on either metal or glass. You can book in at a time suitable to you and James. Works of art to be kept forever. For a start, Map Maison has the kind of ambiance you want from a cocktail bar. East End cool seeps out from the brickwork. It's all velvet banquettes and glittering bottles.

It's a hidden gem with great staff and talented mixologists where the cocktails are made with the kind of loving care that only comes when someone really cares about the drinks.

There is a choice of two cocktails from the menu. On arrival, expect a fizzy glass of deliciousness, followed by a pairing cocktail to go alongside the tapas platter that appears magically on your table. Iberico ham nestles beside some avocado mash, mozzarella and sourdough. Tapas is of course for sharing, but it's rather too good - you have been warned: get in quick.

This all makes for a very happy hour, but in fact you can stay for a very chilled happy hour and a half. Cocktails and Map Maison - they go together like dry martini and an olive or negroni with orange peel. Please don't ask for gin with ice and a slice. These guys are craftspeople. They live to create.

Flamboyant and opulent, with a riot of domes, minarets and lavish interiors. No, we aren't in India, we are looking at The Royal Pavilion, a fantasy Palace designed for a King. It was built in Brighton, the most traditional of seaside resorts, and it was originally just that - a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales. The work started in 1787, and like all building work took some time to complete. John Nash, a theatre designer as well as an architect, took over in 1815, and extended the Pavilion to include the minarets. The architecture is unforgettable, mixing the visual styles of India and China.

Wander through the rooms and marvel at the Chinese-inspired decor. Chinoiserie was very much in vogue and the influence can be seen throughout the rooms. This is where history and glamour collide in the most fabulous way.

Eric Lanlard is an award-winning pastry chef, who honed his skills working for Albert and Michel Roux. He is renowned for his desserts, cakes and afternoon teas. He is also the owner of 'Cake Boy', a baking school in central London, which is where you will be learning to bake under the guidance of this culinary pastry guru.

Your day will start with breakfast, and then it's aprons on as you learn to bake with Eric, who will be sharing his secrets, tips and an anecdote or two. Classes are small, so it's very hands-on, and with only 6 students per class you will be receiving a lot of personal attention. A late lunch is also on the menu, giving you the chance to get to know your fellow bakers.

There are two gardens on this walk. It's only a 12-minute drive from Wakehurst to Borde Hill. Here you can wander around the formal 'Garden Rooms'. Dells and potting sheds, borders and lawns, these immersive spaces will take you on a gardening journey. This is a fabulous garden, and if you visit the shop (and who doesn't visit the shop?) you can take home a piece of Borde Hill to plant in your own garden - there's a rather delicious glasshouse café and restaurant too, so you are covered from all sides.

Start at Wakehurst and then motor over for an afternoon at Borde Hill. A gardener's delight, you can just park the non-gardeners in the café and catch up with them later, but these gardens are so special and diverse they won't want to be left behind.

Battersea Power Station, at its peak, supplied a fifth of London's power. Buckingham Palace and Westminster were both powered by Battersea. It is an iconic London landmark, and the famous chimneys ensured that it became a listed building. Redeveloping the site proved complicated. Indeed, there was a time when Londoners thought it would never get built, but after a few false starts it did, and Battersea Power Station has become London's newest cool shopping and eating destination.

In 2014, the famous chimneys were dismantled, but they had to be rebuilt to the precise specifications of the original. You wouldn't have thought they could do it, let alone incorporate a lift into the north-west chimney. Going up is an epic experience.

The lift takes you up and up and up. A whole 109 metres up with 360-degree views over the London skyline. Your journey starts in the Turbine Hall, where you can look at the original records and learn about the history of the power station. As you board the lift, constellations of light guide your ascent to the viewing platform, where you and an adventurous pigeon can soak up the sights. Don't worry, you won't be getting out. There is glass between you, the sky and the pigeon.

At one time there was a Royal menagerie roaming the ramparts and the moat. The Tower housed exotic wild animals never seen before in London. It was really the first zoo. The King of France donated an elephant to add to the collection. Sadly, the animals, like the prisoners at the Tower, did not last long in the cramped, unnatural conditions. The Menagerie eventually closed for good in 1835, and the remaining animals were dispatched to a new home in Regent's Park.

There is history at every turn, and in every rampart. Your imagination really doesn't have to work at all; the Tower does it all for you. From William the Conqueror onwards, the Tower has been a stronghold. The fact that it is in the middle of London makes it all the more extraordinary.

There's a feeling of grandeur about the hotel, and it has seen a bit of history in its time. It's a landmark Victorian building that was once the headquarters of the secret service.

It's ideally placed if you want to 'do' London. Near to the National Gallery (which has just reopened after a refurb), Trafalgar Square and theatre land. A visit to The King's Gallery is a walk through the history of the monarchy. This building has been through a couple of makeovers. Designed by John Nash, a theatre designer and architect, it began life as a conservatory - one of three - in the form of an Ionic temple. It faced the garden of Buckingham Palace and was later converted into a chapel for Queen Victoria. During the war, it was destroyed by an air raid, and in 1962 Queen Elizabeth II decided to redevelop the ruin to become a gallery for the Royal Collection.

Since the original change of use, it has become a fabulous display space for special exhibitions. The Gallery shows changing exhibitions of works of art. The Royal Collection is one of the largest and most important collections in the world, reflecting the personal tastes of the British monarchy over the past 500 years.

You really will be walking through history, and it is a visual delight for anyone interested in the arts and royalty.

The fastest ship of its day. This British Clipper is only one of three left intact. She has been damaged by fire twice in recent years, but this boat is a survivor. It is now a working museum. Talk to the shipkeepers who maintain the decks, check out the rigging—you can even take the helm as you immerse yourself in the life of the ship. It actually sits in a dry dock, so you can even inspect the hull as the ship hovers above you.

Built in 1869, this is a tea clipper. The Victorians loved their tea. It was a fashionable drink, and huge quantities were consumed. Sadly, the Cutty Sark only made eight voyages to China, due to the opening of the Suez Canal. The ship was unable to take advantage of the new shortcut due to wind conditions, but made up for the loss of the tea trade by pivoting into wool from Australia, needless to say, delivered in record time.

But this boat was built as a tea clipper, and it's tea you will be enjoying in The Cutty Sark Cafe, located on the lower ground deck of the ship, underneath the copper-clad hull. Tea that a crew member back in 1869 could only dream of.

Wherever you walk in the public gardens, the Palace catches your eye from every path. The Postal Museum is one of those places that you could easily miss out on as it vies with all the large museums in the capital, but it is a gem on many levels.

Learn about the history of the post. It seems obvious, but there is nothing ordinary about the story. Learn about the boxes, the methods of delivery, the history of the postie uniform, and see letters, stamps and artifacts that made the post one of the great British inventions.

The entrance ticket also includes a ride on the Mail Rail. The entrance is just across the road from The Postal Museum. This is a unique piece of industrial heritage, designed to transport the post underground; this small train lies deep below the Royal Mail's Mount Pleasant sorting office. Now you can board a miniature electric train and take a ride into the original tunnels. The ride is combined with interactive exhibits that bring 100 years of engineering to life. It is weirdly exciting as you descend 21 metres underground. It lasts about 15 minutes, and it may not be for the ultra thrill-seekers, but it demonstrates how complex and brilliant our post system used to be.

The Castle's first guidebook was published in 1742; you are in safe hands. This is the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world, and everything about the Castle will impress you in the same way it impressed those courtiers back in 1560.

There's St George's Chapel, The State Apartments, The Grand Staircase and the Crimson Drawing Room, and that is just the beginning. Of course if you love things in miniature (and who doesn't?) don't miss Queen Mary's Dolls' House, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens to showcase the finest craftsmanship of the time. There's running water, electricity and furnishings a doll would die for. Working lifts too, no detail forgotten. Did we mention there's a wine cellar?

Of course there will be tea. Not in the palace, but a short stroll away in The Clarence Brasserie. Fluffy scones, clotted cream and jam, will be served on pretty china as you nibble your way through the sandwiches. A glass of prosecco will be on hand, so you can toast The King and wonder how cook is coping in that very tiny kitchen.

WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?

The Royal Pavilion, a fantasy Palace built for a King. This is an iconic landmark. Flamboyant and opulent. A riot of domes, minarets and lavish interiors. It was built as a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales. The work started in 1787, and like all building work took some time to complete. John Nash, a theatre designer as well as an architect, took over in 1815, and extended the Pavilion to include the minarets. The architecture is unforgettable, mixing the visual styles of India and China.

Wander through the rooms and marvel at the Chinese-inspired decor. Chinoiserie was very much in vogue and the influence can be seen throughout the rooms. This is where history and glamour collide in the most fabulous way.

Just a short stroll away is your final destination - The Wine Cellar. Settle in and indulge in a sharing board of locally sourced cheeses and meats, accompanied by chutney and sourdough. It's absolutely delicious. The Wine Cellar house wine is chosen to complement the platter, and you can choose a glass of red, white or rosé, as you settle down to discuss the finer points of Chinoiserie.
