Jayme Marques (Campo Grande, Brazil, June 12, 1936) is a Brazilian guitarist, singer, arranger, and composer, known for introducing Brazilian music to Europe during the 1960s through the Bossa Nova movement, first in Spain and later in England, as well as in Asia through Japan (Copacabana Club, Akasaka, Tokyo) as the director of the Orquestra Orfeu Negro (1963/64).

Throughout his extensive career, he has released numerous studio and live albums, compilations, soundtracks, and collaborations, also participating in various television programs. He has received various accolades in different musical landscapes, becoming an icon in Spain for Brazilian music and a great promoter of live jazz, both accompanied by his musicians and alone with the sole support of his guitar, which earned him great respect in the music world, making him an indispensable figure in jazz clubs throughout Europe.

He has collaborated and shared the stage with international artists such as Jacques Brel, Tom Jones, Maria Creuza, Pat Metheny, Josephine Baker, Matt Monro, Celia Cruz, Machito, Agostinho dos Santos, Lionel Hampton, Thad Jones, Cachao, and Maysa Matarazzo, as well as with various Spanish singers and musicians such as Pedro Iturralde, Paco de Lucía, Augusto Algueró, Emilio Aragón, Pedro Ruy-Blas, Natalia Millán, Tete Montoliú, Natalia Dicenta, or Joan Manuel Serrat, among others.

He is the father of composer and pianist Carlos Marques.

Upon arriving in Spain, and after passing a previous selective examination, he joined the Sociedad de Autores de España (Society of Authors of Spain) as a composer, thus integrating into the professional music world of the country. From this moment on, he began collaborating with national musicians such as Augusto Algueró, Pedro Iturralde, Tete Montoliú, or Juan Carlos Calderón, among others, maintaining the first flamenco-Brazilian fusion with a young and still unknown Paco de Lucía, his neighbor.

Finally, determined to establish his residence in Spain, he was invited by the popular group "Els Valldemossa" to Palma de Mallorca, where he would spend eight years of his life. He began this period as an arranger and director of the musical revue show at the Tagomago nightclub, shortly after creating the "Balear Big Band." Later, he would participate with Augusto Algueró in the direction of the Musical Mallorca and, ending his professional and personal stage on the island, directing his big band in a concert at the Auditorium of Mallorca in memory of Duke Ellington, considered the greatest jazz composer of all time.

Upon returning to Madrid in 1975, he was invited by presenter José María Íñigo to be part of his popular program 'Directísimo,' forming a new Big Band ("Jayme Marques y sus Amigos") with which he provided music for the well-known Saturday night show. He also began participating in various jazz festivals, with his standout performance being at the "First Popular Jazz Festival of Barcelona" on May 5, 1978, at the Palacio de los Deportes de Barcelona, before an audience of 6,000 people, alongside Núria Feliu, Música Urbana, Big Band of the Barcelona Musicians' Union, and La Locomotora Negra. He also won an award at the 1st Sitges Jazz Festival, along with Ray Charles and Lionel Hampton, being invited by the latter. During these years, he began gaining popularity due to the quality of his live performances at the most well-known and prestigious jazz clubs, not only in Spain but throughout Europe. Accompanied by various instrumentalists, including illustrious jazz musicians, Jayme Marques and his group quickly became favorites among jazz and Brazilian music fans, and one of the most respected by their peers, many of whom still refer to him as 'Master.' Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he continued to perform worldwide, bringing Brazilian music to countries such as Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Portugal, Lebanon, Greece, Switzerland, Belgium, Chile, Sweden, Finland, Angola, Mozambique, and even Oceania. His performances ranged from the Camden Jazz Café in London to the legendary and now-defunct Whiskey Jazz Club in Madrid, where Jayme Marques managed to capture a loyal audience and live memorable nights, thanks to shows where friendliness and good humor accompanied displays of musical professionalism from him and his fellow renowned jazz musicians such as percussionist Tito Duarte, drummer Manolo Heredia, saxophonist Jorge Pardo, singer Pedro Ruy-Blas, percussionist and player of other instruments like the berimbau Renato Barcelos, trumpeter Antonio Ximénez, bassist Juan Carlos Mendoza, and countless other artists who accompanied him, interpreting the most well-known melodies of bossa nova and samba jazz. Todas as músicas apresentadas nesta nova coleção da Soul Jazz Records foram criadas por artistas brasileiros que viveram e trabalharam nos EUA na década de 1970.

O álbum reúne algumas dessas melhores obras e vem completo com extensas notas que explicam o caminho que esses músicos percorreram do Brasil aos EUA e mostra os vínculos políticos e musicais entre o Brasil e os EUA que criaram as condições para esta fusão única destes dois culturas distintas, o jazz norte-americano e a música brasileira, ocorrida na década de 1970.

No início da década de 1970, os músicos de jazz norte-americanos estavam ansiosos para trabalhar com os futuros músicos brasileiros. Miles Davis convidou Airto Moreira para se juntar à sua nova banda 'elétrica', Dom Um Romao (parte do lendário Brazil '66 de Sérgio Mendes na década de 1960) juntou-se ao grupo de fusão Weather Report, Flora Purim e Airto tornaram-se ambos parte do novo grupo de Chick Corea. projeto Light As A Feather, Wayne Shorter colaborou com Milton Nascimento, George Duke gravou Brazilian Love Affair e assim por diante.

Trio instrumental formado, em 1966, por César Camargo Mariano (piano), Sabá (contrabaixo) e Toninho Pinheiro (bateria). Sua primeira apresentação foi no programa "Spotlight" (TV Tupi), de Abelardo Figueiredo. Atuou, durante quase seis anos, com o cantor Wilson Simonal, com quem se apresentou em várias turnês internacionais. Participou dos festivais de música no final dos anos 1960, acompanhando Chico Buarque e e o conjunto MPB-4 na apresentação de "Roda viva" (Chico Buarque), Roberto Carlos, em "Maria Carnaval e cinzas" (Luís Carlos Paraná), e Beth Carvalho e Golden Boys, na interpretação de "Andança" (Edmundo Souto e Paulinho Tapajós), entre outros. Em 1970, lançou o LP "Um é pouco, dois é bom, este Som Três é demais" e atuou na turnê de Wilson Simonal no México, durante a Copa do Mundo. De volta ao Brasil, César Camargo Mariano foi convidado para acompanhar Elis Regina, em temporada de shows no Rio de Janeiro. Ivanir do Nascimento (Guaratinguetá, 21 de maio de 1934 - Roma, Setembro de 1988) foi um cantor e percussionista naturalizado italiano, ativo brasileiro na Itália desde o final dos anos cinquenta e conhecido pelo nome de Mandrake (ou MandrakeSom).

Biografia O apelido vem da participação em um programa de televisão no Brasil, em 1959, que participou como maestro e arranjador Enrico Simonetti: durante um episódio dedicado à magia, Ivanir do Nascimento sendo a única orquestra de ter um bigode, vai jogar o mágico Mandrake, tendo então definitivamente o nome. Mandrake participa de shows e gravações com artistas de renome internacional, como Jair Rodrigues, Elis Regina, João Gilberto, Maria Bethânia, Chico Buarque, Vinicius de Moraes, Wilson Simonal, Piper Carlos, Roberto Carlos, Gal Costa. Em janeiro de 1970 ele tocou com o grupo de Elza Soares, com a qual, a convite de Franco Fontana, o grupo move-se para a Itália para uma turnê de 20 dias, que começa no Teatro Sistina, em Roma. 162 passengers feared dead after AirAsia flight QZ8501 goes missing

An AirAsia plane with 162 people aboard went missing en route from Indonesia to Singapore on Sunday morning shortly after the pilots requested a change of flight plan because of weather, the third major aviation incident this year involving a Malaysian carrier.

AirAsia Flight QZ8501 with 155 people on board -- including one British, one Malaysian, one Singaporean, three Koreans, -- and seven crew members lost contact with air traffic control at 07.24 am local time Indonesia.

Sixteen children and one infant were among the passengers on board the AirAsia Airbus A320-200 that went missing on the flight from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore.

At a press conference this morning, Indonesian officials said the plane was several hours past the time when its fuel would have been exhausted.

There were unconfirmed media reports that a aircraft crashed in the waters of East Belitung, off the east coast of Sumatra.

The exact location of the crash site has not been identified, media reports said.

The aircraft was in the Indonesian flight information region, more than 200 nm southeast of the Singapore -- Jakarta FIR boundary, when contact was lost, civil aviation authority of Singapore said.

Contact with the plane was lost 42 minutes after takeoff. There were no Indian nationals on board.

The plane took off from Surabaya (Indonesia) at 5:20 am local time and was scheduled to land at Singapore's ChangiAirport at 8.30 am.

A statement on AirAsia's Facebook page said: "AirAsia Indonesia regrets to confirm that flight QZ8501 from Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control at 07.24 am."

"At the present time we unfortunately have no further information regarding the status of the passengers and crew members on board, but we will keep all parties informed as more information becomes available," the Malaysia-based carrier said in a statement.

The aircraft was an Airbus A320-200 with the registration number PK-AXC.

"At this time, search and rescue operations are in progress and AirAsia is cooperating fully and assisting the rescue service," the statement said.

Indonesian Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact, local media reported.

Air Asia said the pilot had requested "deviation" from its flight plan because of bad weather.

"The aircraft... was requesting deviation due to en route weather," it said.

Indonesia's national search and rescue agency bangka belitung said it has dispatched one vessel to search for AirAsia flight QZ8501.

"We received information from Basarnas in Jakarta that contact had been lost with an AirAsia flight over Bangka Belitung waters...We then dispatched a vessel with a search and rescue team of 22 members to check the information," Febi Imam Saputra, an information official at Basarnas Bangka Belitung, was quoted as saying by the Indonesian Antara news agency.

"If we look at the map, these coordinates refer to an area around 20 nautical miles from East Belitung," said Febi.

Search and rescue operations have been activated by the Indonesian authorities from the Pangkal Pinang Search and Rescue office.

Indonesian authorities have mobilised search and rescue operation near BelitungIsland, deploying five ships and a surveillance aircraft carrying 15 Indonesian Air Force personnel.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore has confirmed that it is linking up with Indonesian authorities to help locate the missing plane. Australia and Malaysia have also offered assistance.

A massive search is underway for the missing plane. The last detected position of the missing AirAsia Indonesia Flight QZ8501 is believed to be between Tanjung Pandan on BelitungIsland and Kalimantan, Indonesia, according to Indonesia's Director of Air Transport, Djoko Murjatmodjo.

"The position where contact was lost was between Tanjung Pandan and Pontianak, about 100 nautical miles south-east of Tanjung Pandan," said Djoko.

The pilot Captain Iriyanto has an experience of 6,100 flying hours.

AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes has asked his company to stay strong. "Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. We must stay strong," tweeted Fernandes, an ethnic Indian, who set up the budget airlines which now flies to several countries.

Fernandes has said that he is heading to Indonesia.

Malaysia has also offered assistance in the search operation.

AirAsia is popular in the region as a budget carrier. It has about 100 destinations, with subsidiaries in several Asian countries.

The loss of contact with the AirAsia plane comes nearly 10 months after the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which went missing on March 8.

Searchers are yet to find any debris from Flight MH370, which officials believe crashed in the southern Indian Ocean.

Another Malaysia Airlines plane MH17 was shot down over Ukraine in July, killing all 298 on board.

After Many Things, released in 2008, and From Africa with Fury: Rise in 2011, A Long Way to the Beginning is the third album by Seun Anikulapo Kuti with Egypt 80, the 14 musicians big band he’s been leading since the death of his father Fela Kuti in 1997. It’s actually the third part of a triptych in which Fela’s youngest son, direct descendant of the afrobeat music style created by his father at the end of the 60’s, is back on the offensive regarding injustice in his country, Nigeria, where it still grows, with an intact anger and a music more powerful than ever.
The ingredients that have contributed to the success of the first two albums are warring beats, triumphant brass sections and burning lyrics but A Long Way to the Beginning is also distinguished by jazz pianist Robert Glasper’s contribution as a producer. While opening the spectrum of the sound, Glasper has made the participation of guests from the conscious American rap scene such as M1 (Dead Prez) or Blitz The Ambassador, a Ghanaian in New York, possible. The voice of German-Nigerian singer Nneka can also be heard on the track “Black Woman”. Finally, the French vibraphonist David Neerman adds his personal touch on two tracks (“I.M.F.” and “Black Woman”), enhancing his attention to details that, allied to its firepower, allows “A Long Way To The Beginning” to be a sophisticated and strong album.

The message of this record is political. Its mood is offensive. When asked about his commitment, Seun answers: “Being African means being politically involved. From the moment he wakes up in the morning, an African has a political attitude as everything he’ll be doing during the day will have something to do with survival.” In his book “A Long Way To Freedom” published when he was let out of jail at the beginning of the 90’s, Nelson Mandela wrote: “Being African in south Africa means being politically involved at birth.”

And My Morning Jacket absolutely nails the groove on “Trouble Sleep,” with help from tUnE-yArDs’ Merrill Garbus and Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, achieving quiet, easy flight with quietly piercing solos. Part revue, part played-out mastermixing, this honors its musical source nicely, and proves how fecund Fela continues to be.

War's first album without Eric Burdon was a strange, imposing, and beautiful hybrid -- a bridge between their then-current work with Burdon and their roots, going back to the early '60s and their origins as the Creators and the Nightshift. Although it was never a hit -- topping out at number 190 on the charts -- or yielded any substantial AM radio hits, the album is musically imposing in its sheer breadth, and its boldness, melding the new and the best of the old update, incorporating songs, arrangements, and ideas that dated well back into the prior decade, and the group's origins as the Creators and the Nightshift. From the quietly soaring 1971-vintage opener "Sun Oh Son," the music drifts back into the heavily Memphis soul-influenced "Lonely Feelin'," updated slightly but basically a rousing '60s blues-cum-gospel number that somehow ended up a failed single off the album. From there the album goes totally into left field with the gospel-style "Back Home," featuring lyrics provided by no less a figure than the Animals' Hilton Valentine. "War Drums" is a killer showcase for Charles Miller's tenor sax, Dee Allen's percussion, and Lonnie Jordan's organ, and "Vibeka" is a haunting, slow, bluesy workout, inspired by romance, tragedy, and realization, showcasing composer Lee Oskar's blues harp and Howard Scott's guitar. "Fidel's Fantasy" gets into wholly experimental territory with its length, and the topical political message seems an oddity today, but there's no questioning its musical boldness. (allmusic)
