Senior Manager, NYC Food and Fitness Partnership

The NYC Food and Fitness Partnership�??s mission is to promote both equitable access to a healthy, sustainable food system and measures that support active living, and to achieve measurable increases in healthy eating, physical activity and reductions in obesity. These results will be achieved through a community- driven program and policy development process. The Partnership brings together persons and organizations from diverse sectors, with varied expertise, to work together in support of this shared vision.

The Partnership was created with the assistance of a two year planning grant from the Kellogg Foundation, and is expected to submit a 5 year implementation proposal to the Foundation in January 0f 2009.

The Senior Project Manager position in the NYC Food and Fitness Partnership is a new position and will work across the Partnership with the 5 Action Teams and the 3 Community Food and Fitness Coalitions in the Bronx, Harlem and Brooklyn. The Senior Project Manager will be the lead full-time person on the project, reporting directly to the 3 Partnership co-chairs. There is one co-chair each from the Mayor�??s Office, the Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene, and City Harvest. The Senior Project Manager will manage the Partnership Coordinator and will oversee all the work of the partnership including current projects and the preparation of and fundraising for the five year implementation plan. The Senior Project Manager�??s primary responsibilities will include:

Establishing a clear project planning, appraisal, and contracting process that delivers an annual series of community-led project designs of high technical quality.
Establishing a food and fitness policy platform; progressively developing component drafts of the platform working with the Action Teams and Community Coalitions; writing, editing, and clearing the overall platform document.
Writing a 5-year implementation plan and grant proposal for submission to the Kellogg Foundation..
Raising additional funding to sustain and improve the project generations.
Ensuring effective facilitation of the work of the Partnership�??s Action Teams and Community Coalitions;. strengthening their organization and participation rates, and improving communications with the Steering Committee and among these groups.

Qualifications:
At least 10 years of relevant work experience, including 5 years of management experience in policy and/or program development.
Experience in designing and operating program planning and management systems.
Demonstrated strategic planning experience.
Knowledge of food, nutrition, agriculture, direct farm, anti-hunger, physical activity and built environment organizations within NYC.
Experience in small system retail projects, health promotion, social and/or environmental research.
Capacity to maintain multiple relationships and strong inter-agency coordination.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Experience in grant-writing and a history of fundraising success.
Coalition building and leadership experience.
High level meeting facilitation experience.
Proven ability to manage projects independently and with discretion.
Bachelors Degree required; Master�??s Degree or higher preferred.

Agency is looking for a consultant to do a needs assessment with seniors in NYC in food pantry setting. Below is the job description - looking for someone with a background in gerontology, public health, nutrition or other social services background �?? and a fluency in Spanish and English a plus. This would be a great part-time position for a RD interested in seniors and low-income communities and/or emergency food systems!

Multi-service agency seeks consultant/ researcher to design and carry out a needs assessment to determine the specific emergency food needs/behaviors of the senior citizens using a busy emergency food pantry in a Spanish-speaking community. Based on the findings, s/he will develop a set of recommendations for service changes. S/he will deliver trainings to implement these recommendations with program staff. Minimum 6-month commitment for part-time work as required for start-up, assessment, report, and training.

Qualifications:

Education and/or experience required:
1. Advanced degree in Gerontology, Public Health, Nutrition, or one of the social services. Preferred interest in low income seniors and/or hunger issues. Degree candidates with appropriate experience will be considered.

The National Hunger Clearinghouse (NHC), a program of WHY, is a centralized, nation-wide database of innovative organizations working on food, nutrition, and agriculture issues around the country. We focus on constructive, community-based solutions to hunger and poverty within and between the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Every year, we receive thousands of telephone calls to our National Hunger Hotline. Through the National Hunger Hotline, we connect individuals in need to emergency food, government programs, and community services in their own communities through our extensive network of community-based organizations.

Information Dissemination

Through this collaborative, t he demand for and availability of local fresh food will be doubled; residents in all neighborhoods and of all incomes will have access to affordable healthy food; all children and youth will have safe and appropriate play spaces; many more residents will build regular physical activity into their lives by walking or biking to shopping, work, school, or for recreation; and youth will be civically engaged and their thinking will integrate the relationship between eating healthy food, a physically active lifestyle and good health.

Position Summary:
In the spring of 2006, leaders and stakeholders came together to form a community collaborative that would create systems change in the areas of food and fitness in all of Boston. The initiative became the Boston Collaborative for Food and Fitness (BCFF) and in April, 2007, the Collaborative was the recipient of a two-year planning grant from the Kellogg Foundation. These funds allowed the Collaborative to hire an executive director who will guide and oversee a planning process to: build and maintain a healthy, well-functioning community-driven collaborative; develop youth capacity for leadership, advocacy and planning; create an action plan for systems change in food and fitness; and use participatory evaluation to improve the effectiveness of the Collaborative's work.
The Program Manager of the BCFF is responsible for assisting the Director in supporting and guiding the work of the BCFF during its planning stage. The Program Manager's role will have a specific focus on Youth Development and will also address communication needs and other Collaborative-wide tasks. The Program Manager will also assist the Director with necessary tasks such as scheduling meetings and sending updates to Collaborative members and other key stakeholders . The Program Manager will work at TMF's Codman Square office and is supervised by the Director of the BCFF.

Purpose of Position This position conducts dietary patient education /consultation for AAS-C clients during intakes and annual updates. Review and interpret physician prescribed diet, instruction to clients and monitors them to determine changes. This position will function within the client service team of AAS-C with a primary focus on service to all people with the HIV/AIDS who request such services.

Position Location and Physical Requirements This position will primarily be performed at the Alliance of AIDS Services-Carolina�??s client services offices in Wake and Durham Counties. 90% percent of incumbent�??s time will be spent sitting, attending to clients living with HIV/AIDS, working with a computer and paperwork. Description of Responsibilities and Duties: The following are examples of typical duties; other duties may be assigned. The incumbent is required to follow and perform any job-related functions and instructions by any person authorized to give instructions or assignments. · Meet with client to assess nutritional status and needs and recommend modification to help them maintain adequate levels of nutrients involved in immune function · Confers with clients medical providers to clarify nutritional related orders, recommend appropriate dietary treatments, and exchange information · Works with clients to establish individualized nutritional plans and conducts periodic reviews with clients on progress of plans and need for additional diet modifications. · Educate clients about nutritional interventions to alleviate side effects from medication; maintain lean body mass. · Documents all patient encounters, as well as nutritionally significant observations and evaluations in client electronic and hard copy records. · Work with other HIV service staff and community partners to assist clients with access to service that resolve nutritional problems (e.g., food pantries, nutritional supplements, supplemental food programs. · Conduct individual and group nutrition education to improve and maintain good nutritional status for AAS-C clients · Coordinate and manage AAS-C food pantry activities including the procurement of food from the local food bank and food drives from local churches and community groups. · Conducts classes for staff and other AAS-C collaborating service providers concerning various facts of dietary care · Evaluates the educational materials available in the service sites and seeks additional information and resources in instances where appropriate dietary information is not readily available · Develop reports and collect and maintain statistical data in accordance with funding source requirements · Develop appropriate assessment tools, curriculum and documentation instruments as required · Participate in case conference meetings as needed and consult with the AAS-C client service team and ancillary providers regarding nutritional service needs · Support the activities the agency�??s Continuous Quality Improvement Program. · Perform other job-related tasks as the Director of Client Services assigns them.

Also identify developmental milestones in a patient population with diverse cultural backgrounds. Certification as a Registered Dietician (or RD eligible) is required; Master's degree in Nutritional Sciences is preferred.
