Work has begun this summer on extensive renovations to the 45-year-old West Jordan High School building. The project is scheduled for completion in November 2029.

Upgrades will include increased natural lighting, improved ADA accessibility, new flooring, collaborative learning spaces, a new dance studio, a weight room, and a gym.

The Jordan Board of Education approved the remodel, which is expected to save district taxpayers more than $100 million compared with the cost of a full rebuild.

Students showcased their films and videos on the big screen during the JSD Video Showcase. For nine exceptionally talented students, there was also a plot twist at the end of the event as they were surprised with “Rising Artist” scholarships from the New York Film Academy. Each of the nine scholarships provides $20,000 a year in tuition assistance to students who attend NYFA at their Los Angeles or New York campus.

A standing ovation to Jack Bowler (Copper Hills), McKay Bowler (Copper Hills), Rowan Burgess (Riverton), Lauren Crane (Riverton), Ethan Edwards (Copper Hills), Ella Goebel (Riverton), Jackson Jenkins (Riverton), Tanner Maruji (Riverton), and Isaiah Rasmussen (Copper Hills) for this amazing achievement.

For most students summer break is well underway, but for those enrolled in Jordan PREP, it was the first day all over again. First-year students started their six-week Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP) with icebreakers to meet their new classmates and some introductory testing. Returning Jordan PREPers were reacquainted with old friends and even began working on capstone projects.

The program gives students a series of classes with a mathematical, logical, and reasoning foundation over four consecutive summers and puts them on track to graduate with a two-year engineering certificate from Salt Lake Community College before they receive their High School Diploma.

Music filled the air at Terra Linda Elementary School as first grade students stepped onto the dance floor, transforming their school into a royal ballroom for a day. The school hosted its first grade Cinderella Ball, a special event designed as the grand finale to a unit in the District’s Wit & Wisdom English Language Arts curriculum. The unique lesson goes beyond the traditional fairy tale, teaching students to explore and analyze what people around the world admire about Cinderella’s character—such as resilience, kindness, and perseverance.

To bring the global literature unit to life, students traded in their usual school clothes for fancy attire, including sparkling crowns, tiaras, and ballgowns. The event was a family affair, with parents and older siblings asked to join their first-graders as their royal dance partners. Teachers taught everyone how to dance the Waltz.

Connecting physical activities such as dance and dress-up to classroom texts helps younger students engage more deeply with the reading material, making the core virtues of the curriculum both memorable and impactful.

Thank you to the teachers and staff at Terra Linda Elementary School for putting together such an incredible and memorable event for students and families.

Two Jordan School District students were honored for their essays against youth violence at the 26th annual “Do the Write Thing” contest. Fort Herriman Middle School eighth graders Brooklyn Billman and Jack (John) Parry were named state finalists in the competition hosted by the Utah State Board of Education. Each student received a $300 My 529 Scholarship.

The initiative, sponsored by the USBE Prevention team and the National Campaign to Stop Violence, challenges seventh and eighth graders to reflect on the causes of youth violence and propose real-world solutions. “The ‘Do the Write Thing’ challenge proves that our students have the insight and the courage to lead the way toward a safer future,” State Superintendent Molly Hart said.

This year, nearly 2,000 Utah students participated in the program’s classroom discussions, with Billman and Parry rising to the top among 261 state-level final submissions. Jordan School District congratulates both students for their exceptional leadership and powerful writing.

Ultimate West at the PlayVs Cup.

The Sentinels captured the championship by completing a flawless 3-0 sweep in the grand finals. The victory capped a historic season for the team, which advanced to the national stage last month after placing first in a regional competition. With the national title, student-athletes James Cox, Logan Dazley, and Teddy Cameron each earned a $1,000 college scholarship.

A new national championship banner and trophy will soon go on display at the high school. Head coach Joel Marquez, assistant coach Jesse Mlaker, and alumni player and mentor Helaman Valle said they were thrilled with the students’ performance this season.

Congratulations to the players, coaches, and the Mountain Ridge community members who supported the team on the tournament’s live stream.

Through a partnership with ARUP Laboratories, every high school in JSD hosted at least one blood drive during the 2025-26 school year. In total, JSD HOSA (Future Health Professionals) programs organized 16 blood drives, rallying students, staff, and community members to donate life-saving blood. The collective effort yielded an incredible 1,226 units of donated blood, demonstrating the immense power of student-driven community service.

The true weight of these drives is measured in the lives changed, as a single unit of blood can support up to three patients in need. Because of dedicated JSD high schoolers, as many as 3,678 patients facing critical conditions at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and other Utah hospitals will receive life-saving treatments. The year was defined by historic milestones: Copper Hills High led the way with four drives collecting 610 units—outperforming every other sponsor collection drive ARUP works with. Meanwhile, Herriman High broke its own donation record three consecutive times, and Mountain Ridge High achieved a monumental school record in December by collecting 59 units in a single drive.

This remarkable achievement cements Jordan School District’s standing as one of only two districts in which every high school actively sponsors blood drives. Beyond the numbers, the success of these events relies heavily on the passion of educators who champion students as mentors and coordinators.

ARUP wants to express its gratitude to the incredible teachers who made this year’s life-saving blood drives possible: Taunia Bean, Cynthia Cox, Madison Jenkins, Eva Peterson, Jenifer Glassey, Todd Egbert, Buffy Blunk, Trudy Pecorelli, Tiffani Holmes, and Cami Petersen. Thank you to everyone who helped make the blood drives a huge success.

The trio of sophomores took home first place in Business Services Operations Research at the national competition in Atlanta, Georgia.

The students partnered with Utah’s Department of Corrections and Department of Government Operations to research the viability of converting the Utah State Correctional Facility to solar power with a state-of-the-art storage system using converted EV batteries from the state’s fleet. The team worked with experts from around the state to research the viability of the concept, prepare a realistic budget, and develop a proposal for training incarcerated persons as solar technicians to assist with both installation and system maintenance. The project not only got the attention of DECA, but the state of Utah also made all three students interns, and will include the project in the state’s annual report.

Great work, Jessica, Isla, Livia, and Herriman High teacher Rickee Stewart, on an impressive project!

It may be a while before Foothills Elementary School Principal Abe Yospe has any desire to hear the sound of a kazoo again. That’s because to show their sincere appreciation for his daily school announcements, sometimes intentionally annoying everyone with his not so super singing, a group of 5th grade students and their teacher decided to have some equally annoying fun with their beloved principal.

They came up with a plan to follow Mr. Yospe around the school for nearly a half hour, playing kazoos loud and proud. As you know, the kazoo creates a very distinct buzzy sound and students practiced all day to bring their kazoo playing up to perfection as they followed Mr. Yospe up and down the halls, even into his office. Principal Yospe took it all in stride and the students had a blast with the silly surprise.

We can’t wait to see all the fun students, teachers, staff, and of course, Principal Yospe will have in the upcoming school year.

Fourteen Olympic and Paralympic athletes surprised students by showing up to take part in the field day fun… all of them fresh off competing in the recent Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games.

The Olympic athletes had a blast side-by-side with students in a number of races, a tug-of-war, signing autographs, shaking hands, and offering words of inspiration and encouragement.

The surprise was part of an ongoing effort by Utah 2034 to put athletes face-to-face with communities which will host the world in 2034. It was also an opportunity to promote the International Olympic Committee’s new Let’s Move 2026 campaign, a global push to get young people active.

The afternoon ended with a ‘swag toss’ of Olympic hats, shirts, and pins doled out to very excited students, some who may have hopes and dreams of representing Team USA themselves one day.

Thank you to the following Olympic athletes for being incredible role models and letting young students know hard work and determination can pay off in some pretty big ways:

Ethan Cepuran, Long-Track Speed Skating

Kate Delson, Para Snowboard (Snowboardcross)

The last day of school will likely be one a Copper Hills High School 11th grade student won’t soon forget. That’s because Dylan Margetts showed up bright and early at KUTV studios in downtown Salt Lake City Thursday morning, as one of 20 statewide finalists in the Ken Garff Keys to Success program. Dylan was then narrowed down to one of four finalists… and then, he won, taking home a brand new 2025 Nissan Versa!

The Ken Garff Keys to Success program, motivates Utah students in grades 7–12 by connecting them to career pathways, scholarships, and prizes. A major highlight is the annual Car Giveaway, where one lucky student takes home a brand-new vehicle.

Congratulations, Dylan. Keep up the great work preparing for your future and upcoming school year as a senior at Copper Hills High School. May all the hard work and new wheels take you far.
