Student body officers, cheerleaders, and principal Brady Bartholomew welcomed students back with cheers, fist bumps, hugs, and high-fives. From sophomores entering high school for the first time to seniors celebrating their final first day of school, everyone was all smiles as they walked through the front doors.

Good Day Utah was live at Bingham High School for the first day of classes for high school students in Jordan District. Fox 13 Reporter John Franchi interviewed Bingham student body officers, Principal Shawn McLeod, and Superintendent Anthony Godfrey about the excitement of the first day of school. Students were greeted with hugs, high-fives, and a performance by the Bingham drumline to welcome them back to the home of the Miners.

Ice Cream Social at Mountain Point Back-to-School Night Marks Sweet End of Summer

Students and parents dropped by the school to find their classrooms, meet the teachers, and learn about programs like orchestra and choir. To top it off, students could grab an ice cream bar and meet up with old friends in the cafeteria to celebrate the start of a new school year.

Bingham High Seniors Gather at Prospector Park for Annual ‘Senior Sunrise’

Bingham High School seniors officially kicked off their final year of high school by gathering at Prospector Park for a “Senior Sunrise” event organized by the school’s PTA and student body officers. The early morning celebration gave members of the Class of 2027 a chance to reunite before the school year officially begins.

Students showed up at dawn to watch the sunrise over the valley, enjoying breakfast treats and games. The morning concluded with a traditional group photograph to mark the milestone moment.

Reminder: Walk and Drive Safely Around Schools

School is back in session at Jordan District schools this week! School zones will be active, so plan accordingly and allow extra time for your commute and walk and drive safely.

Some additional helpful reminders for students and drivers around crosswalks and in school zones include:

Do not park or stop in the crosswalk.
Drive without distractions.
Never pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk.
Always follow posted speed limits.

Students and Parents:

Plan your walking route before the first day of school.
Wait for the crossing guard’s signal before proceeding into a crosswalk.
Look both ways before and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
Drop students off only in safe, approved areas.

Oquirrh Hills Middle School Levels Up this Year

The Redrig video game truck gave staff a chance to unwind before the year begins and made back-to-school night a must-attend for students. A special thanks to Sippy Soda & More in Riverton, which donated dirty sodas and sippy lattes to keep the teachers energized for the school year.

Bluffdale Elementary Teachers “Make It Count” at School Carnival

The big top arrived at Bluffdale Elementary as the school hosted the “Make It Count” carnival for its faculty. Led by Principal Staci Moore, acting as ringmaster, and Assistant Principal Veronica Holyoke, the lion tamer, teachers participated in various games and activities, such as a blindfolded ring toss and having their fortunes read. Each activity correlated with one of the six pillars of Jordan School District’s Portrait of a Graduate. As they work to make every student a curious thinker, creative problem solver, engaged citizen, empathetic communicator, resilient lifelong learner, and responsible teammate, these educators truly strive to make every moment count.

Monte Vista Students Wrap Up Summer With Read-A-Thon

The start of school is right around the corner, but some Monte Vista Elementary students have already visited the school to read a book. The school hosted a readathon party for everyone who completed their summer reading goals. Students grabbed a slice of pizza and a bowl of ice cream before settling down with a pillow and a blanket on the gym floor to read a book with their friends. Everyone who achieved their reading goals received a medal, and members of the 1,000-Minute Club took home a Mustang trophy for reaching an amazing milestone.

Nearly 200 new educators were welcomed to their first day at Jordan School District in a big way. Educators were cheered on by mascots, cheerleaders, students, and principals as they headed to new teacher induction training. During lunch, the Superintendents of Rock+ entertained the crowd, and they were met by even more cheers and applause on their way out of the building.

This year, Jordan School District received approximately 120 applicants for every open elementary teaching position and at least 25 for positions at middle and high school levels.

South Jordan Middle School’s Megan Morrison Named 2027 Utah Teacher of the Year Finalist

Megan Morrison, a special education teacher at South Jordan Middle School, has been named a finalist for the 2027 Utah Teacher of the Year award by the Utah State Board of Education. Morrison is one of the ‘Fab Five’ finalists, representing the pinnacle of teaching excellence in Utah. The five finalists will participate in an in-person interview with the 13-person Utah Teacher of the Year Selection Committee. The winner will be announced at an awards banquet on Thursday, Sept. 3, and will go on to represent Utah in the National Teacher of the Year Program.

Final Day of Summer Meals Tomorrow!

The summer food service program is celebrating the end of an amazing summer of free meals on Friday. Everyone is invited to Columbia Elementary School for the final Community Days of the summer for free meals and extra fun. Jordan School District Nutrition Services and community partners will be on hand for pizza, prizes, and games from 11:30-12:30 p.m. Anyone 18-years-old and younger is eligible for free meals, and adults can purchase lunch for $4.10.

Columbia Elementary will have extra fun during lunch Friday, but the final day of the summer meals program is available for breakfast and lunch at any of four locations:

Space Camp Preps Columbia Elementary Students for First Day of Kindergarten

Columbia Elementary welcomed a new batch of future students during its annual Kindergarten Space Camp. The one-day “boot camp” brought incoming kindergarten students to school before the first day to build confidence and alleviate anxiety for both the students and parents. Students met their teacher, explored the playground, found their classroom, and ate a school lunch. The entire process gives students a familiarity with their school so they can conquer the first day with confidence.

Riverside Elementary School Student Takes Top Honors at National Art Contest Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday

She is part of an amazing family embracing America’s 250^th birthday and many of the celebrations that come along with it. Please join us in congratulating Riverside Elementary School student Elizabeth Black who took top honors at the Freedom 250 American Heroes Student Art Contest. This was a nationwide competition for students in grades 3-12 and invited young people to create original 2D artwork inspired by historical figures to celebrate America 250.

More than 1,000 students from across the country entered the contest and 168 of the young artists won. Elizabeth Black was a top prize winner! Elizabeth, along with her drawing, were recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington D.C. where her artwork was on display.

We are proud of this talented Riverside Elementary student. Keep up the great work, Elizabeth!

Jordan School District Bands Perform at Days of ‘47 Parade

The Copper Hills and West Jordan High School bands proudly marched in the annual Days of ‘47 Parade. The annual tradition celebrates the arrival of the pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 and is one of the oldest parades in the country.

Oakcrest Elementary Builds Bonds on Hiking Trails

Every Wednesday over summer break, you can find the Oakcrest Elementary School staff building bonds, strengthening their bodies, and finding adventure. Under the leadership of the school’s wellness coordinator, Tracey Davies, educators and staff members regularly slip on hiking boots to explore scenic trails across the Wasatch Front.

Dubbed “Wellness Wednesdays,” the initiative encourages the staff to step away from their school and connect outdoors. The group’s outings have taken them across a wide variety of local terrain, from Farmington Creek Waterfall Trail to Stewart Falls near Sundance. Beyond promoting physical health and stress reduction, the shared outdoor challenges have fostered team building and coworker connections.

The Oakcrest Hiking Club shows no signs of slowing down, proving that for these educators, building a supportive school culture is a journey best taken one hike at a time.

The free meal service will resume on Monday, July 27 for the final week of the summer program at the following locations.

Heartland Elementary School, 1451 West 7000 South, West Jordan
Terra Linda Elementary School, 8400 South Old Bingham Highway, West Jordan
Westvale Elementary School, 2300 West Gardner Lane, West Jordan

Breakfast service is from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Lunch service is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

All children 18 years old and younger can receive a free meal. Adult prices are $2.50 for breakfast and $4.10 for lunch.

Construction Underway at Daybreak Elementary

Daybreak Elementary School is getting an update as a new security door is being installed in the hallway connecting the school to the adjoining recreation center. This new door will allow the school to better function independently of the Daybreak Community Center during school hours and is scheduled to be completed before the school year begins.

New polycarbonate panels will also be installed around the running track to separate the fitness center from the gym below. The panels will still allow for circulation and airflow, but provide extra privacy between the fitness center and gym. This project is slated to be finished after the start of the school year.

Eight students from Jordan School District were invited to compete at the National SkillsUSA Leadership & Skills Conference. The competition is the largest gathering of America’s future skilled workforce and the ultimate recognition of excellence in career and technical education.

Jordan PREP Students Become Amateur Rocket Scientists for a Day

Jordan PREP (Pre-Freshman Engineering Program) students became rocket scientists for a day. They spent time in class learning about the forces of rocket flight. Then they put their learning into action by transforming 2-liter bottles into rockets, complete with nose cones, fins, and fuel tanks filled with water and compressed air. Joel P. Jensen Middle School served as the launch site as students competed to see which rocket design would fly the farthest.

Jordan PREP is a summer program that engages students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)-based learning. The program spans three consecutive summers and puts students on track to earn a certificate from Salt Lake Community College before graduating from high school.

Diane Witt-Roper, a fifth-grade teacher at South Jordan Elementary, was celebrated at the fourth annual Honors in Education Gala. The gala honored twenty K-12 educators through a rigorous nomination process, recognizing those who make a meaningful impact in their communities.

The award ceremony took place at the Grand America and was hosted by the Deseret News and presenting sponsor Ken Garff for Good and the Robert H. and Katharine B. Garff Foundation. Diane received her award from Utah First Lady Abby Cox.
