JATC Students Partner With ‘Slow the Flow’ for Water-Wise Project at Governor’s Mansion

Landscape Architecture students in Jordan School District recently launched a new Profession-Based Experiences program as part of the “Governor’s Mansion Goes Waterwise” initiative.

Led by JATC South instructor Margaret Ward, students partnered with the Slow the Flow state educational program to remove grass in the park strip of the Governor’s Mansion to help conserve water. In Phase 1, students volunteered their time to plant water-wise vegetation along already installed drip irrigation lines. During Phase 2, CTE students will grow drought-tolerant plant varieties at the JATC South Greenhouse and plant them in the spring.

Great work to everyone who helped create a fun, meaningful project to get JSD CTE students involved in water conservation while learning about horticulture in semi-arid environments.

Oak Leaf Elementary Commemorates Constitution Day with Patriotic Songs and Performances

Students at Oak Leaf Elementary celebrated America 250 and the anniversary of the United States Constitution’s signing with patriotic songs and performances. Students sang “This Land is Your Land,” “You’re A Grand Old Flag,” and “America Rocks.” Other performances included a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, a “We the People” Poem, and a reading of the Preamble to the Constitution.

Mountain Ridge High School Students and Staff Show Fox 13 Why They Are a “Cool School”

Magical Classical Piano Music Inspires Students at Majestic Elementary Arts Academy

It is a piano performance students and staff at Majestic Elementary Arts Academy won’t soon forget. That’s because they were treated to a special concert through the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation’s “Music-in-Our-Schools” outreach program. It is a program that brings Steinway grand pianos and world-class concert pianists directly into schools.

This performance featured award-winning pianist Misha Galant who competed as a quarterfinalist and semifinalist in the prestigious 2024 Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition. Mr. Galant’s fingers danced across the piano keys as he played classical numbers from Tchaikovsky, Schubert, and George Gershwin. Students learned that the piano can tell stories and convey emotions without lyrics. After each number, students were encouraged to ask questions about the music.

The “Music-in-Our-Schools” program introduces live classical piano music to 20,000 – 25,000 Utah students every year.

Thank you to the Gina Bachauer program and amazing pianist Misha Galant for giving Majestic Elementary Arts Academy students such a rich and memorable music experience!

JSD Native American Education Program Holds Community Night

Jordan School District’s Native American students gathered for an evening of food, friends, fun, and community. The JSD Native American Education Program held a community night for families to connect, meet their mentors, and learn more about the program’s resources. Costa Vida Riverton and Nothing Bundt Cakes Herriman provided free dinner and dessert for attendees, while volunteers served dirty sodas, popcorn, and cotton candy.

Herriman High School Choir Hosts Cabaret Night

The Herriman High School Choir hosted a Cabaret Night entitled “New Beginnings.” The Chamber Singers, Opus, and Vivace performed a program that showcased a range of musical styles, from Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” to music they’ll use to compete in the Shakespearean Festival. The Opus Choir premiered two pieces that Herriman contributed to as part of a consortium: For the Fallen by Laura Farnell and A Newer World by Jonathan Reid.

Jordan School District CTE Summit Bridges Education and Local Workforce Needs

Education, industry, government, and community leaders gathered for the Jordan School District Career and Technical Education (CTE) Summit to strengthen regional workforce development efforts. The event aimed to build a sustainable talent pipeline to support economic growth in the Salt Lake Valley. Participants heard a keynote talk on Utah’s economic outlook from Michael Jeanfreau, an economist with the Utah Department of Workforce Services. Jeanfreau will present data on emerging labor-market trends, high-growth industries, and the specific skill sets tomorrow’s workforce will need.

The summit highlighted action-oriented strategies that local employers and education leaders could create to facilitate apprenticeships, internships, and profession-based learning. Hunt Electric, the South Valley Chamber, the Mountainwest Chamber, and Cyprus Credit Union sponsored the event.

Thank you to everyone who participated in building and fostering long-term public-private partnerships that will help retain top talent in the local economy.

Jordan District Hosts Middle School Dance Workshop

Jordan School District was proud to welcome Ai Fujii Nelson to Joel P. Jensen Middle School for the district’s middle school dance workshop. Nelson, the education director at Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, worked with middle school dancers from throughout the District on new tips and techniques. Students then applied what they learned in a final dance showcase performance for one another.

Copper Canyon Gets Crafty With Art Projects

Students at Copper Canyon Elementary School took a brief brain break to create some amazing crafts. Each grade spent 30 minutes in the cafeteria working on a craft project, ranging from hand puppets and foam stickers for younger students to birdhouses and wind chimes for older grades. The projects coincided with National Arts in Education Week, giving students a chance to be creative and bring something home that was handmade in school.

Pucker Up! Midas Creek Staff Kiss Pig for a Good Cause

Midas Creek Elementary School got up close and personal with a pig for a good cause. The school PTA has been hard at work fundraising and brought in Oreo, a Kunekune pig, to celebrate reaching a milestone. A teacher from each grade level and Principal Rossetti each took turns giving Oreo a smooch while the students cheered them on as a reward for the school’s fundraising efforts.

A big thank you to Oreo for dropping by Midas Creek and giving students (and the teachers!) a very memorable day at school.

Grandparents’ Day created memories which students and their guests won’t soon forget. What a wonderful way to build lasting bonds and bring the community together.

West Hills Middle School Choir Members Are Hitting All the Right Notes!

The West Hills Middle School Choir, under the direction of Michael Draut delivered an enthusiastic performance of the National Anthem at a recent Utah Royals game. The students represented their school and Jordan School District with pride, making history as the largest performing group at the America First Field stadium all season.

The choir was proud to share a common motto with the Utah Royals: Better Together! Stepping out onto the field took students out of their comfort zones, but they brought the energy, shone in the spotlight, and made it an unforgettable night with family, friends, and the community.

Sunset Ridge Students Honor September 11 with Flag Ceremony

Students at Sunset Ridge Middle School arrived early on Friday to honor victims of September 11, 2001, with a touching flag ceremony. Student body officers spoke to the assembled crowd about remembering the lives lost 25 years ago and raised the American flag to half-staff in honor of the victims. Following the flag ceremony, the Sunset Ridge choir sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” before students entered school to start their day.

Westvale Flag Retirement Ceremony Commemorates the 25th Anniversary of the September 11 Attacks

A patriotic and reverent atmosphere filled Westvale Elementary as the school held its annual flag retirement ceremony. Surrounded by students quietly waving miniature flags, members of the West Jordan Police Department conducted the ceremony and raised a new flag to half-staff in honor of the lives lost 25 years ago on September 11, 2001. Assistant Principal Danielle Hanson spoke about the significance of remembering September 11 and led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jordan District Students Commemorate Patriot Day with Field Trips to the 9/11 Project

Students from Bingham High School and Daybreak Elementary School were among the first to tour the 9/11 Project hosted by the Major Brent Taylor Foundation. The exhibit honors and educates future generations with an immersive experience about the history and lessons of 9/11. The annual event is on display at the Bastian Agricultural Center in South Jordan until Sept 14.

Bingham High’s madrigals opened the event with a performance of the Star-Spangled Banner before the first public tours began. Daybreak students were the first field trip to arrive, but over 5,000 students from Jordan School District will tour the exhibit during its run to learn more about the events of September 11, 2001. Along with the tour through the museum, students also talked with first responders from New York City who were there during the attacks and got up-close looks at local fire, police, and military vehicles.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor Brings Genuine Warmth, Wisdom, and Incredible Inspiration to Students, Teachers, & Staff During Jordan School District Visit

It was a once in a lifetime experience for some students, teachers, and staff in Jordan School District. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor took time out of her busy schedule to visit several schools in the District, delivering a message of inspiration, taking pride in self-worth, and civic engagement. The Justice talked about her new book “Just Shine!” encouraging students to be the very best version of themselves possible, and as the book says “how to be a better you.”

During a large assembly and Fireside Chat, Justice Sotomayor took questions from students and staff; each chosen question was met with a thoughtful, deeply reflective answer that truly resonated with the audience.

From student performances, to classroom visits, personal photos, a welcome reception soda service provided by South Valley students, and huge hugs along the way, Justice Sotomayor created memories that will last a lifetime in Jordan School District.

Thank you, Justice, for sharing your wisdom, warmth, and inspiration, and for making a difference in young lives.

JATC Students Volunteer to Build The 9/11 Project

Students enrolled in programs at the Jordan Academy for Technology & Careers volunteered their time on Thursday for a good cause. The students got together to help assemble the 9/11 Project hosted by the Major Brent Taylor Foundation. JATC’s construction trades students used the first few weeks of the school year to build the exhibit walls and, along with classmates, helped set up the photos that make up the self-guided tour.

More than 5,000 Jordan School District students will take field trips to tour the 9/11 Project during its run in South Jordan. The exhibit is open Sept 10-14, 9 a.m.- 9 p.m., at the Bastian Agricultural Center (2100 W 11400 S., South Jordan, UT) and is free to the public. The experience gives children and families a chance to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001, and meet and interact with first responders. Chick-Fil-A Cow Encourages Westvale Students to “Read Mor Books”

Bluffdale DLI Students Celebrate Brazilian Independence Day

Portuguese Dual Language Immersion (DLI) students at Bluffdale Elementary celebrated Brazilian Independence Day with song and dance. The students learned and performed traditional songs in Portuguese to honor Dia da Independência, or Sete de Setembro, the Brazilian national holiday commemorating September 7, 1822, when Brazil declared its independence from the United Kingdom of Portugal. Dressed in Brazilian soccer jerseys and specially decorated hats, the students enjoyed a festive day learning about Brazil’s history, culture, and language.

Students enrolled in one of Jordan School District’s DLI programs spend half of their day in elementary school learning in a second language. The program starts in first grade and continues up to twelfth grade, with university classes available in high school. Majestic Elementary Arts Academy Students Begin Music Instruction

It was an exciting day for students at Majestic Elementary Arts Academy as they began their first day of music instruction. After trying different instruments during the first week of school, students got their first official crack at the instruments they’ll be learning for band this year. Students became familiar with the basics of how to hold and play their instrument on the first day and will quickly become accomplished musicians as the school year progresses.

Majestic Elementary Arts Academy is a free public school open to any K–6 students in the Salt Lake Valley. Teachers at Majestic creatively apply art and interactive elements into instruction, including music lessons taught by accomplished teachers Lisa Blodgett and Olivia Murphy.

Ridge View Elementary Launches Raptors to Planet Kindergarten

Peers, teachers, parents, and administrators cheered on kindergarten students at Ridge View Elementary as they prepared for a voyage to “Planet Kindergarten.” Jordan District’s Planet Kindergarten initiative launches students into literacy through engaging space-themed activities and reading goals. Students decorated space helmets, teachers dressed as astronauts, and the administration wore inflatable raptor astronaut costumes to ensure that the start of their mission to learn letter sounds and shapes was a fun and memorable experience.

Back to School BBQ Brings Virtual School Students Together

Attending school online doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with classmates in person! Students from Rocky Peak Elementary, Kelsey Peak Middle School, and Kings Peak High School met for the Jordan Virtual Learning Academy Back-to-School BBQ. Principals David Hullinger, Spencer Campbell, and Ammon Wiemers worked the grill, while Kings Peak student body officers helped load up the plates. Students played games, met with their teachers, chatted with friends, and took selfies with Rocky the Goat in a fun night at the Jordan Learning Center.

The school PTA hosted Donuts and Grown Ups before the first bell, with donuts for all who attended. The event gave students, parents, guardians, and grandparents a chance to enjoy a sweet breakfast together on the lawn outside of school and start the school year off on a high note.
