The graduate walk is also an opportunity to inspire the next generation of graduates. Classes from kindergarten through ninth grade stopped to fill the halls to congratulate the graduates and look forward to when they would be wearing the cap and gown.

After completing a high-stakes AP Chinese Language and Culture Exam, Chinese DLI students at Mountain Creek Middle School wrapped up their 9th grade school year with an engaging and creative performance of Piying Xi (Chinese Shadow Puppetry). Chinese Shadow Puppetry is a millennia-old folk art form where flat, colorful silhouette figures are manipulated behind a backlit, translucent screen blending storytelling, music, and visual art.

As part of their presentation on Chinese myths and legends, students not only introduced the stories and cultural background, but also designed and created their own shadow puppets and brought the legends to life through beautiful figures, images, and storytelling performances. Teacher Michael Lu says experiences like this showcase the power of Dual Language Immersion education and the many ways students can connect with global cultures through language learning.

Dozens of student and staff vehicles were on display, many showcasing their skills in the school’s welding and autobody programs.

The City of West Jordan recently celebrated the grand opening of a brand-new pedestrian bridge located at 7000 South and 1500 West with students from Heartland Elementary cutting the ceremonial ribbon. Following the ribbon-cutting, an eager crowd took part in a ceremonial inaugural walk across the bridge. The group included the entire student body and staff of Heartland Elementary, alongside their supportive families. They were also joined by West Jordan City leaders and members of Jordan School District’s administration and Board of Education.

Antelope Canyon Elementary School students and families came together to support their community by collecting over ten thousand items during the school’s annual food drive. The student council volunteered every morning for four days, collecting donations under the direction of the PTA and parent volunteer Malori Mower.

The donations will stock Principal’s Pantries throughout the District, providing essential resources for students and families experiencing need. To celebrate the community’s generosity, a local Arctic Circle donated ice cream treats to the winning grade-level classes.

Great work, Antelope Canyon Elementary students, staff, and families. Your generosity and service will help students and families throughout Jordan School District.

In a game two slugfest, the Silverwolves trailed by four and were down to their final out before Bre Mackay hit a game-tying grand slam to send the game to extra innings. Grace Leary delivered a walk-off double to win it 16-15.

The week ended with a parade with squad cars, emergency vehicles, and the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse circling the school. After the parade, students could walk inside the mobile Command Center and even see how lights, sirens, and radios work on squad cars. The day finished with cake for students and the officers, including Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera. 

Thanks to the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office for taking the time to build connections with South Valley students and staff. Getting to know those who serve and protect is a valuable and memorable experience at South Valley School.

Throughout the school year, students studied Ron Clark’s Essential 55 Rules, learning valuable lessons in leadership, respect, and communication. The banquet provided students with an opportunity to put those skills into practice by demonstrating confident handshakes, proper etiquette, active listening, and meaningful conversation.

Dinner guests were seated alongside students and invited to observe and evaluate their skills in areas such as restaurant etiquette, eye contact, conversational abilities, and professionalism. Guests were able to witness firsthand the growth students achieved throughout the year as they developed important leadership and interpersonal skills.

Congratulations to the students, staff, and everyone involved in making the Leadership Academy and banquet dinner such a success. The students represented Hayden Peak with excellence and maturity throughout the evening.

At the Jordan Academy for Technology and Careers (JATC) North, the Biotechnology program held its annual Biotech Poster Symposium, where 21 students presented rigorous, semester-long research projects. The symposium allowed the students to then present their project findings to industry professionals. From fingerprint degradation in medical forensics to tackling ways to kill bacteria, the symposium highlighted the incredible potential of these rising researchers as they showcased possible solutions to modern medical problems.

Thank you to all the industry professionals who took the time out of their schedule to help these young future biotech scientists and engineers further their education. Partnerships like the symposium provide valuable feedback and opportunities for interaction that will take them into their future careers.

After trailing for much of the game, Riverton’s Maggie Bird knotted the score up at 7 with just over five minutes remaining. Bird was the hero again in overtime, scoring the game-winner with 32 seconds left in the overtime period. Suli Tafisi tallied three goals to help Riverton to its first lacrosse championship since the sport was sanctioned by the UHSAA in 2022.

Herriman took home the 6A boys team title with a score of 109.5, easily topping second-place Lone Peak’s 85. The Mustangs were led by their distance team, which scored 80 points, including 30 from Jackson Spencer, who is undefeated in both cross country and track this year.

In the final event of the 5A meet, West Jordan won the 4×400 relay to top Viewmont by a single point. West Jordan set five new school records during the meet, including a state record in the 4x100m relay.

A total of 92 employees are retiring this year and together they have devoted 1,736 years to education. The longest serving retiree in this year’s class is Norm Emerson with 40.5 years.

Four Jordan District drivers competed in the State competition against the best of the best from Utah. Drivers were tested on their abilities and safety behind the wheel of a school bus. Competitions included tight turning, curb parking, student loading, and an obstacle course.

Jordan School District Nutrition Services and Career and Technical Education (CTE) staff hosted a “Farm to School” lunch at Columbia Elementary School, welcoming state lawmakers and representatives from both the Utah Department of Agriculture and the Utah State Board of Education. The special guests received a firsthand look at the District’s “Junior Master Gardener” curriculum, which is currently being piloted across several Jordan schools. State officials also toured the school kitchen to observe how fresh local ingredients are used to prepare student meals. However, the highlight of the day was lunchtime, when lawmakers sat down with third-grade students to chat about their experiences with the program and hear what they thought of the agriculture-based lessons.

The “Farm to School” initiative seamlessly bridges the gap between local agriculture and student nutrition by integrating fresh, locally grown produce into school cafeterias and providing hands-on CTE curriculum and resources for classrooms.
