Isaac Broadbent – Daybreak Elementary School – I have had more than one person explain Isaac as a “golden retriever in human form.” I hope he loves dogs because it is quite a compliment. Working with him brightens anyone’s day and I can only imagine the great work he does with his students. Isaac has shown up to our incoming 7th grade parent nights and I have witnessed how his students light up when they see him. He is collaborative, supportive, reliable, and a great example of a person for those young kids.

Jeni Viernes – Fort Herriman Middle School – Jeni is truly the heartbeat of our school culture and has a unique gift for turning a standard school building into a warm, welcoming community. Jeni is a constant, reassuring presence. You can always find her in the halls during passing periods greeting students by name, with a warmth that makes her incredibly approachable. This “helpful spirit” doesn’t go unnoticed by our families, as parents frequently reach out to express their gratitude for the genuine support she provides their children. Jeni is an indispensable part of our team who balances professional excellence with a creative soul and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition.

Alena Johnson – Valley High School – Alena is such an amazing advocate for her students. She’s empathetic and understanding, when a lot of adults might feel out of patience or discouraged. She can see where students are coming from and meet them where they’re at so they can achieve their potential. She’s an awesome counselor and person, and we’re lucky to have her.

Each of the 16 teachers in the program shared the results of their research with colleagues, principals, and the District administration. Projects hit on a variety of topics, including promoting student growth in literacy, improving new-teacher mentoring, and offering more support to multilingual students.

The showcase marked the end of the two-year program to develop teachers professionally so they can lead, educate, and inspire colleagues without leaving the classroom. Congratulations to the first graduating class of Jordan Teacher Fellows!

Young kids took a walk on the wild side at the Jordan Child Development Center Spring Festival. These future students had a ball while they completed a scavenger hunt for hidden animals, strolled through a safari, created their own jungle, and tiptoed through a swamp. While the children were having fun, parents met with providers to learn more about resources and support available for children.

The Spring Festival is one of many events hosted by the Jordan Child Development Center to further its mission to empower families with the knowledge and tools to nurture their child’s growth and development.

Students from the Jordan School District Native American Program recently gathered for a powerful hands-on workshop led by Jacob Crane, Executive Director of the nonprofit Cultural Fire Events. Under Mr. Crane’s guidance, students crafted their own traditional hand drums using maple wood and deer hide. The event was designed to be more than a lesson on making musical instruments, it served as a way to build cultural bonds among the District’s Native American students. Mr. Crane, who has taught traditional dance for over 20 years, shared how these instruments bridge communities and preserve ancestral songs.

By the end of the session, each student walked away with a custom drum they had laced and stretched by hand. The workshop provided a space for students to connect with their identity and learn the technical skills of a centuries-old art form.

Great job to the staff in the Jordan Native American Program for creating such a meaningful event, and thank you to Jacob Crane for sharing his decades of expertise. This event was a great way for students to carry forward the traditions of native song and drum.

The Cat in the Hat, Horton, Gertrude McFuzz, and a host of other characters turned Antelope Canyon into Whoville for the school’s production of Seussical Kids. The musical, based on the works of Dr. Suess, was performed to two sold-out shows by a cast and crew of over 50 students, led by director Sara Stottmann.

Special thanks to the production team: Lauren Amis, Sara Hatch, Niki George, Melissa Hiller, Shelby Anderson, and Naomi Bawden. The production team of Antelope Canyon staff and PTA put in countless hours to help the students make Suessical a hit.

Harrison’s journey to the top was no small feat. Competing against 45 Mandarin-speaking peers from across Utah, he first earned a spot as a top 10 finalist. He then faced a rigorous two-part evaluation from distinguished judges, including several university professors. To advance, students had to demonstrate both language proficiency and cultural knowledge.

This achievement was the result of hard work and support from his school and family. A shout-out to Monte Vista’s Mrs. Grover, who generously spent numerous afternoons staying after school with Harrison, helping him prepare for the finals.

As Utah State Champion, Harrison earned a $250 prize. Additionally, he received an official invitation from the Chinese Consulate to compete in the National Finals in Los Angeles this May. If he wins at the national level, Harrison will secure a spot in the Global Finals held in Beijing, China.

Congratulations to Harrison on this outstanding accomplishment. Wishing you continued success as you represent Jordan School District and Utah in Los Angeles!

Mountain Point Elementary had an invasion of robots, LEGO, and scientists at the school’s annual STEM Night. Community partners from the University of Utah brought fossils and invited students to a star party on campus. Utah Valley University staff stopped in to teach students about robotics and conduct family-friendly science experiments. Thanks to volunteers, students could also code a computer game, design a LEGO car to win on the track, or participate in several other STEM-based activities and crafts.

Fourth-grade students at Westvale Elementary School put STEM education into action in comically overcomplicated ways. The school celebrated its second Rube Goldberg machine showcase, creating elaborate contraptions to perform simple tasks, like popping a balloon or knocking over a stack of dominoes.

Students had to think outside the box as they used recycled materials to build gadgets to understand concepts like force, motion, energy transfer, and cause-and-effect. Once the machines were finished, students demonstrated and explained their creations to classmates and family.

A team-up of libraries benefited the students at West Jordan High School. Librarians from the Salt Lake County Library system visited the WJHS media center to assist classes in signing up for library cards. In minutes, everyone interested received their own library card or a replacement card for old accounts.

Salt Lake County Library staff shared their love of books, but also educated students on everything else that comes with a library card. The local library can help with homework, college prep, or even 3D printing. Owning a library card gives students access to a wealth of services that can benefit them for the rest of their lives.

Thank you to the Salt Lake County Library staff for visiting West Jordan High and helping Jaguar students.
