PETA Relives Aegis Music with Rock Musical "Rak of Aegis"

No it is not a cheap knockoff of the hit musical Rock of Ages. Though the director admitted that the title is a direct influence, this upcoming musical from the Philippine Edcational Theater Association (PETA) is all original and of course mostly inspired by the late 90's band Aegis.

Closing their 49th season, PETA choose Rak of Aegis to shake things up. Paired with an excellent cast, music and script, Rak of Aegis is definitely the right material for the job.

A story of love, fame and resilience, the narrative revolves around the residents of the flooded village of Villa Venizia. At the center of the story is Aileen (Aicelle Santos alternating with Joan Bugcat) a young mall promodizer caught in the web of finding love and seeking fame to support her family.

Aileen's family like the other residents are greatly affected by the flood. Her father Kiel is in the brink of losing his job as baranggay captain Mary Jane (Isay Alvarez-Seña) plans to close her failing shoe factory. Knowing that her income will never be enough to make ends meet, Aileen decides to make a video of herself in the hopes of becoming the next YouTube sensation. Aileen's suitor Tolits (Jerald Napoles alternating with Pepe Herrera) posts the video online, unaware that it will put Villa Venizia under the spotlight and change their lives forever.

And who among us don't know Aegis hits such as "Luha," "Halik," "Sundot," "Christmas Bonus," and "Basang-basa sa Ulan". Admit it, people in all ages, gender or class, Aegis music became part of our culture whether we like it or not. Also imagine all those hits to be performed by talented performers such as Isay Alvarez, Kalila Aguilos, Robert Seña and Aicelle Santos. Be prepared for the performance of your life.

With the success of the previous rock musical "Sa Wakas" (based on Sugarfree Songs), I'm pretty certain that Rak of Aegis will also be a hit. There are many ways by which man defines his or her pursuit of happiness. Spending time with family and loved ones is one. Hanging out with friends is another. But for Charlie Brown, his dog Snoopy, his lil’ sister Sally, and their friends Lucy, Linus and Schroeder, happiness may be as simple as “finding a pencil,” “pizza with sausage,” or “telling the time.”

This coming February 2012, 9 Works Theatrical, one of today’s most exciting theater companies, takes you back to those good ol’ days when baseball games, book reports, kite-flying and glee club rehearsals were all the craze as it brings to life the timeless characters from Charles M. I already saw the show and I really love it so much. I know I already mentioned this to some people that other than the obvious fact that you will laugh out loud over the jokes and funny stuff that the show have, in a weird way you will still find yourself deeply touched by it. As weird as it may sound but it is true, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown can also make you cry but of course it depends on how you interpret the show. For me, I have my reasons why I cried but I'll just keep that on wraps for now until my official review is published soon. For now, take my word. Watch it and have fun.

Joining Tonipet and Sweet on stage are Lorenz Martinez (The Wedding Singer) as Snoopy, Franco Laurel (Sweeney Todd) as Linus (Toff De Venecia on some shows), Carla Guevara Laforteza (Rent) as Lucy and 9 Works Theatrical's creative Director Robbie Guevarra (Sweeney Todd/The Sound of Music) now leaving the director's chair and taking in the actor's hat as the title role Charlie Brown. It's been a while since the last time I saw Robbie on stage as an actor. I think the last time is almost years ago on Repertory's Sweeney Todd. He is also on Resorts World's The Sound of Music last year but I saw the show with his alternate. So with You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, I'm excited that I will be witnessing again Robbie's acting prowess.

Yesterday I finally got the chance to see Mamma Mia! live on stage. It is an open book that I really hate the movie version of this musical despite the fact that it stars Meryl Streep. Don't get me wrong, I like Meryl Streep and I worship her for being one of the most excellent actress alive but still there is something about the movie that makes it so wrong. I'll discuss it in details on my review but for now, here is a teaser video of the show.

When I first met this gorgeous lady years ago, other than being a skilled host and dancer she caught my attention by wowing us with her magnificent voice. That time I know that she will soon go places as a professional singer. True enough last year she ended up joining the all girl singing group Kitty Girls with Jocelyn Oxlade and Ayanna Oliva.

First time I met Khai years ago

After a year performing with the Kitty Girls, Khai being a natural musical genius begins writing new original songs and now she finished her first single that she is excited to share to the public. Here is my short interview with Khai telling us more about her project.

So without further ado here is the official music video of Khai Lim's first single Lose Control.

Though personally I'm not fond of listening to electronic pop, it is no doubt Khai is gifted not only with a beautiful voice but also with musical talent to create such music that can be compared with Lady GaGa, Rihanna and Lily Allen. I forgot to ask her if she will write songs in other genre but I hope she will because you guys should hear her sing pop songs and ballads.

JORITV: Rent's "Take me or Leave Me" by Glee Versus Rent Manila Cast

I've been losing faith over FOX's Glee ever since it returned from the Christmas break. I dunno, maybe the songs don't interest me at all or the story is beginning to become tiring and boring. But the latest episode just show me a little glimmer of hope. But before you throw rocks on me, I'm not talking about the Bieber fever. What excites me is when Rachel (Lea Michelle) and Mercedes (Amber Riley) performs "Take me or Leave Me" from the broadway hit musical "Rent". Watch the clip below.

The only difference with this version is Lea and Amber alternates more often on the song landing them on different parts. I think on the last part Lea ends up on Joanne's parts while Amber is belts Maureen's lines.

Lea and Amber are so great on this production number and believe it or not we Filipinos can also do it and definitely much better. Below is a clip from Rent Manila press conference with Mian Dimacali (Maureen) and Jen Villegas (Joanne) performing the same song.

I was cleaning up some clutters on my files when I find this video file hidden somewhere beneath all other files and I can't believe that I never published it before. Here is a Tribute Video that I made for 9 Works Theatrical's first run last February.

Last February is my first time to see Rent live so I'm really very grateful for 9 Works for reviving it again on stage and it is really quite refreshing and liberating at the same time. I really Love Rent that is why I created this video.

Got to try this cool app in facebook. It utilizes face mapping enabling your face to be transfered inside the Grid as a Light Cycle driver.

The video features me as a random Grid Program who is on the run from an unknown program. It is a wild chase between us but in the end the other wins. Then he reveals himself to be none other than but CLU 2.0, Kevin Flynn's (Jeff Bridges) own program that currently appears to have taken over the system as a master control. The video looks neat and makes me feel that I really have my own program inside the Grid. You should try it too.

Looking Back on Memories: Cats Now and Forever

I was just organizing my files on my laptop when I stumble upon some of my past materials during the Cats Manila staging here in Manila. Seeing the photos and videos just brings back that night a month ago when we shared a love affair with these feline creatures of the night. So for just one moment for those who watched it and for those who missed it, here are some excerpts from Cats Now and Forever.

This video features one part of the opening sequence when the Jellicle Cats arrived on a dumpster where they will have the Jellicle Ball. This is the night where all in the tribe meet once a year hoping to be chosen as the one to be sent to the Heaviside layer.

The video above features John O'Hara who played teh character of Rum Tum Tugger. Rum Tum Tugger is the rocker Cat among the tribe and characterized to be very intimidating but fairly flamboyant. It is a surprise that people are very amused with John O'Hara's version of Tugger. Me myslef find it more superior compared to the one who played it on the video who is John Patridge. Maybe because of O'hara's natural swagger who captivates the audience a lot.

This particular scene is the most unique part of the show where Sillabub played by Alyse Davies performed a part of "Moments of Happiness" in Tagalog. The tagalog transcript is provided by the country's top writer and poet Pete Lacaba. Unfortunately everyone on the theater burst to a loud applause that most didn't heard what does the lyrics say. Rachel Alejandro and Felix Rivera Together Again in Xanadu

After stints on 3 runs of Avenue Q, Rachel Alejandro (Avenue Q, Rent) and Felix Rivera (Avenue Q, Spelling Bee) finally reunites on the funny and magical Broadway musical Xanadu.

Both actors are excited on this new project as they play two characters who falls in love to each other. The excitement also adds up to the fact that this is the first time they will play characters that will actually interact to one another compared to their previous project, Avenue Q where they only got to interact through puppets.

Rent Coming to Manila in February

I was introduced to musical theater when I first watched Baz Lhurmann's Moulin Rouge! starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Being a movie, theater and music lover I develop my love to Musical theater. Then I discovered Chicago, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, CATS, Miss Saigon and a lot more. But other than Moulin Rouge! as my top favorite, Larson's Rent is the other musical that became very close to my heart.

2001, Rent hits Manila and that time I'm still not aware of Rent and my Musical Theater interest is still not in its peak. To cut it short, I missed the show. 9 years past and I'm still crossing my finger and expect that some theater company will restage it again. And one day an angel heard my prayers. A friend contact me and said, "Hey Jori We will be doing Rent in 2010". My heart stopped for a while but evidently on that moment, my soul is rejoicing and I'm saying to myself, at last Rent is coming back on stage here in the Philippines.

To those who don't know Rent, Rent is the winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize with book, music and lyrics by the late Jonathan Larson. Rent has made a lasting mark on Broadway for it is one of the shows that introduce broadway to more realistic and modern take of human society. Rent tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of AIDS. The success of the show led to several national tours and numerous foreign productions, and in 2005, it was also adapted into a motion picture that features most of the original cast members. And now here it is for its latest Philippine restaging to be brought by 9Works Theatrical.

Last month I was invited by 9Works Theatrical to meet the cast of the upcoming staging of Rent. I was so very excited that night. Seeing them gave me the assurance that the show will really push through this coming February and to be directed by one and only Robbie Guevara (Songs for a New World).

Among the cast that will join the line-up are Gian Magdangal (West Side Story) as the HIV Positive Ex Rockstar Roger Davis, Fredison Lo as the Film maker Mark Cohen, Nicole Asensio and Cara Barredo (Mulan Jr.) as the HIV Positive Exotic Dancer Mimi Marquez , OJ Mariano as the HIV Positive teacher Tom Collins, Carla Guevara-Laforteza (Spelling Bee, Avenue Q) as the performance artist Maureen Johnson, Noel Rayos (Spelling Bee, Hairspray) as Mark's former room mate and current Land lord Benny Coffin III, Job Bautista as the Gay drag queen Angel Dumott Schunard and Jenny Villegas as Maureen's current squeeze Joanne Jefferson.

Ensemble cast includes Ring Antonio, Peachy Atilano, Johann Dela Fuente (Spelling Bee), Harold Cruz (Songs for a New World), Gary Junsay, Raul Monteza, Anna Santamaria (Songs for e New World) and Mark Tayag.

With this cast I'm expecting a very successful show this coming February.

I met this new comer Cai Cortez from the Cinema One Originals entry Maximus and Minimus. This chubby but exceptionally beautiful and smart girl talks about her first lead foray on movies after being cast on several independent films and cast as a supporting role for Bea Alonzo on a mainstream gig.

Its been 6 years when I first started blogging and I remember its is full of non sense juvenile rants. After 4 years, I decided to become a more serious blogger by opening a public blog.
