Pilipinas 2096 and Beyond: 3 Stars and a Sun

After the massive success of Rak of Aegis, I've been wondering if PETA just got lucky in mounting this monumental musical that spans several reruns. Of course they can do it over and over again but time will come, Rak of Aegis' glitter will soon fade. They need a new musical as big as Rak of Aegis. And when we say big, they need a big name for their material. And here comes 3 STARS and a SUN.

Based on the Original Pilipino Music from the legendary Master Rapper and Song Writer Francis Magalona comes a cautionary tale set decades in the future where Philippines is reduced into an isolated colony called StormDome. With the promise of safety and new beginnings, survivors of 2026 Nuclear War embraces the new life ahead of them.

Of course the main selling point of 3 Stars and the Sun is it catalogs one of the most celebrated OPM artist in the country. Francis M has been the voice of this generation ever since he started creating all of his composition. Themes about Love, Nature, Youth and Patriotism still resonates even after his untimely passing 7 years ago. Now, his masterpiece takes new shape in the form of PETA's latest musical offering that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Written by Mixcaela Villalon and Rody Vera, and Directed by Nor Domingo comes a musical that will wake everyone's patriotic hearts. The music is re-imagined by the award winning Musical Director Mike Salomon of the ground breaking Rak of Aegis. The ensemble of cast includes Paolo Valenciano, Gio Gahol, Nicco Manalo, Gold Villar, Che Ramos-Cosio, Carla Guevara-Laforteza, Bodjie Pascua, Raffy Tejada, Giannina Ocampo and Justine Pena to name a few.

Unlike Rak of Aegis, 3 Stars and a Sun is written explicitly with political colors. Rak of Aegis may also have some but it is carefully camouflaged by everyday sub plots that makes the whole story bearable to people who don't really enjoy themes that explore power and governance. But yes I get it, 3 Stars and a Sun's main point is to show what is the problem in the society. I don't see anything wrong about that, but it can definitely affect the show's viability because let's face it, majority of theater goers wants to be entertained first rather than give them a preachy plot. Either way one thing is for sure, 3 Stars and a Sun clearly expressed their message that if we don't do anything to change the system, History will keep on repeating itself in the coming years. It is an eye opener and definitely something not everybody will be comfortable to. Good thing the writer's injected some fun moments keeping the atmosphere as balanced as possible. Not to mention you will be treated with top of the line performances from industry greats that joins the cast.

A Tale of Heroes, Love and Power: Kung Paano ako Naging Leading Lady

Carlo Vergara has been known for his funny, romantic and equally heroic alter ego Zaturnnah that conquered the whole nation from print media, stage and full length features. Once, Carlo is the face of a light and endearing face of LGBT community through his creation inspiring Love and Laughter to everyone. And suddenly here comes "Kung Paano ako Naging Leading Lady" that changes the game all together.

First released as a straight one act play in CCP's Virgin Lab fest, Vergara's "Leading Lady" tells an unlikely story of two sisters as they struggle to live their lives on a world where superheroes are new celebrities in town. A total departure from Vergara's signature pink comedy comes a dark tale of Heroes, Villains, Family, Love and Power.

When Vince De Jesus (Musical's Musical Director and Composer) said "Leading Lady" is dark, I didn't expect it is THAT dark. With "Leading Lady", it may first look like an ordinary Superhero inspired play/musical but behind is a picture of rotten reality of the Pinoy Society carefully chronicled by Vergara. "leading Lady" is definitely a breath of fresh air and at the same time it tortures you with images of the society's flaws. But then again the play/musical didn't fail to give the laughs and "kilig" moments that balances everything out.

You will also be treated with a superb set of performers. Bituin Escalante as Mely is so lovable and funny. She is like a teddy bear you see in a store and suddenly you want to buy her and bring her home. Bituin is so cute on this role that I really enjoy watching her every single scene. Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo on the other hand steals the spotlight with her heroic performance (and killer abs) as Fuerza Filipinas' leader Madre De Dios which is a complete departure to most of the roles she already played in the past. And of course the performance that brought the house down, Nar cabico as Senior Blanco is hands down my favorite. Among others that need recognition are Kakki Teodoro as the Computer AI of Fuerza Filipinas who delivers a lot of good laughs without really trying to be funny, Markki Stroem who plays Leading Man whom shown how far is his improvement on his acting skills and Giannina Ocampo as the vulnerable Nena Babushka.

If there is one thing that I don't really like is the straight English parts. Well I know the characters are suppose to be foreigners but still they are Superheroes based in the Philippines. The least I expect is them speaking in Tagalog-English. Personally I believe it kills some momentum and dynamics between characters when they are communicating.

Lastly, the musical is nothing without the Music. Though Vince De Jesus openly admits that the songs and music he created are less inspired, the end product still came out as a masterpiece. That only shows De Jesus' skill level. If he can make an epic soundtrack without inspiration, then imagine what he can do with one.

If you like a fun musical, "Leading Lady" is definitely for you. Just don't expect this as another Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah. I can see this Musical's big potential. If Zaturnnah can conquer movies why not "leading Lady". I already have ideas for the cast. Its gonna be epic!!! "Kung Paano ako naging Leading Lady" the Musical is closing this weekend (June 4-7). Entertaining but Flat: Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb Review

When Night at the Museum first came out 9 years ago, it becomes an instant cult classic because of its brilliant fusion of adventure, history and comedy. For me it is a very simple film with a very simple goal to entertain at the same time it introduces viewers to some basic historical figures in America and around the world.

In 2009, "Battle of the Smithsonian" came and the gameplay changes dramatically. New museum, new (live) exhibits and new adventure, Battle of the Smithsonian didn't fail an inch to improve and give a new flavor to the franchise. Now 2015 comes "Secret of the Tomb". Does the latest installment live up to the legacy of first two films?

Well I'm a bit 50-50 on this. You see, "Secret of the Tomb" once again proved that it can generate enough laughter to entertain the audience. Even that old slapping routine between Larry and Dexter never gets old. The characters sometimes don't even need to do anything to be funny. Sometimes simple jokes are enough to make people laugh and this franchise is a perfect example of that. The addition of Rebel Wilson to the cast also adds another brand of comedy. Her quirky nature is a breath of fresh air as always. I just wish they've used her more other than being the love interest of an inanimate object.

After "Battle of the Smithsonian", I expect something big for the "Secret of the Tomb" but sadly this latest outing fell short as it didn't deliver enough impact to deliver a bona fide sequel. I also expected that some questions can be answered now but I guess the silly nature of the script left more confusion and didn't give enough concrete conclusions.

If I'm not mistaken, this is probably the last film in the franchise. I assume, Producers don't want to recast Robin Williams on his iconic portrayal of Pres. Roosevelt. [SPOILER ALERT] But if they will continue the franchise, we can all expect that it will be set in London, where the Tablet now resides [END SPOILER]. I won't mind having Rebel Wilson as the new hero of the franchise.

In the End, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb is a fun watch. Just don't expect something big. You can definitely enjoy it with your family and share a day of laughter. Now showing in cinemas nationwide, distributed by 20th Century Fox.

Razzle Dazzle your Holidays with Chicago the Musical

One of the best movie musical I enjoyed next to Moulin Rouge!, Rent and Hairspray, Chicago finally opens its curtain to live audience in the Philippines. You are up to a fun, steamy and exciting treat as Velma, Roxie, Billy, Mama Morton and the rest of the inmates of Cook County treat us with total Fosse goodness.

Set in year 1920's during the prohibition era, the musical tells the story of a night club dancer named Roxie Hart (Bianca Marroquin) as she went on a bloody but funny revue of events as she fights for her freedom after committing murder. Instead of becoming an object of disgust, Roxie completely transformed into an overnight sensation headlining all newspapers and becoming everyone's favorite celebrity all through out the dark but glitzy city life of Chicago.

Ok first thing first, I want it to be clear that the movie is equally good as the live version. It is rare for some musicals to be as good or become better than the source material. I'm confident to say that the film adaptation did justice to the source material. However, there is a big distinction between the two. Aside for transforming the live performance into a cinematic masterpiece, one thing I noticed is that Chicago the Musical is originally intended to be a comedy. And Comedy and Fosse makes a good combination. The film on the other hand becomes too dramatic. Yes, there are funny moments but the tone of the film is generally more serious. To some, that may sound bad but for me it still works. After all, Chicago's grunge backdrop is better emphasized with drama. Another big difference from the film is the live musical only utilizes a simple and minimalistic set design as opposed to what I'm expecting because of the film. The set is inspired by night clubs or cabaret in the 20's complimented with a constant costumes of characters as cabaret dancers and performers.

We all love Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere and Queen Latifah from the film but you really need to see these fantastic stage actors that immortalizes our favorite Chicago characters. Let me start with my favorite -- Bianca Marroquin. Bianca is a Mexican actress who makes a Broadway debut in 2002. The crowd instantly fell in love with her as Roxie Hart. She is bubbly, loud and extremely perky. You may think she is the complete opposite of Renee Zellweger who played Roxie in the film well because the Roxie in the film and the Roxie in the live musical has different execution. Since Roxie is considered as the heart of the musical, it is just fitting that Roxie is as funny as the overall tone of the show. I loved watching Bianca dance, I like her spontaneous reactions to dialogues and she is just a natural comedian. Watch out for the "Me and my baby" segment because this is probably her best performance on the show.

Of course another crowd favorite is Velma Kelly, played by Terra C Macleod. Her performance of the iconic opening "All the that Jazz" and "Cell block Tango" together with the equally stunning and talented ensemble is to die for. Terra as Velma Kelly is sex, beauty and hot personified which is definitely one of the reason why boys (and maybe some girls) should check this out. We also have the powerful performance of Roz Ryan as Mama Morton who's pipes are just astonishing. Jeff Mccarthy also delivered a charming show as the District Attorney Billy Flynn.

Lastly, the show won't be as good as it is without the Theatre itself. Theatre Solaire proved that this new entertainment destination can live up to the expectations they promised to their patrons. Top of the line equipments, from lights and sounds. Special mention is the Constellation Acoustic System that creates a perfect acoustic atmosphere for Chicago the Musical.

If you want to enjoy a musical that can satisfy all your senses, this is definitely the one for you. Chicago the musical will run until the 21st at the Theatre Solaire, Solaire Resorts, Pasay City. What I Think About The Amazing Spider-man 2 (Short Review)

Just saw the movie last night and for starters, It is quite safe to say that The Amazing Spider-man 2 deserves a thumbs up.

Though not really the best since I believe Sam Raimi's Spider-man 2 can fairly compete with it, The Amazing Spider-man 2 got a lot of things under their sleeves that gave them the advantage.

The overall aesthetics of the film is just exquisite. From the swinging animations to the production designs. They are all so beautifully executed. you will feast your eyes on high quality CGI that blends perfectly with real world physics. And those Spider-man moves, the choreographers, the animators and Andrew Garfield himself need a pat on the back for giving us a very spirited Spider-man.

And on acting, do I really need to discuss this? Garfield, Dehann, Stone, Foxx, Sally Field! Oh I want to embrace them all. We all know how most actors think superhero movies don't need good acting. I kinda believe on that sometimes but The Amazing Spider-man's ensemble of actors just proved that acting is still the key for a better finished product regardless if it is a Superhero movie or not.

My only gripe about the film is that I guess the whole movie just runs too fast. I would have prefer if they gave enough time to build Dane Dehann's Harry Osborn. Well we are still lucky that dane gave us a good performance but it could have helped if they included him at least 1 movie before he becomes [bleep].

I'm also giving a thumbs up to the writer, editors, and marketing officers for successfully hiding the ending to the public. It was an intense ending and I love it!!! Also thanks to people who stopped themselves from revealing it on social media.

It is not the best thing I expect for the film but nevertheless it is a good movie all together. Catch The Amazing Spider-man 2, now showing in cinemas near you. From Marvel Entertainment, distributed by Columbia Pictures.

Soldiers, Spies and Secrets: Captain America The Winter Soldier Movie Review

No matter how good all superhero movies are, there are still moments when we actually look for something more. Something beyond all the heroics and super powers. More than all the vigilante justice we see on most superhero titles. Now we are lucky somebody is trying to change that.

The last time we saw Steve Rogers is when he and his super friends, The Avengers saved the men and women of New York from the Chitauri invasion lead by the Asgardian outlaw Loki. Ever since, Captain America is the icon of old fashioned superhero among the ranks of the Avengers obviously because he is the one who still follows the ideals of Uncle Sam. But everything's gonna change with this latest installment, The Winter Soldier. This time Cap faces a threat he is not expecting and he, including his friends and SHIELD itself is entangled on a web of lies. Now he is forced to surrender all of his principles on his last attempt to save mankind.

"Political Thriller", such big words to describe this movie. I admit, I was worried if Marvel can actually pull this off... but they did. This is the change i'm talking about. It is not just a superhero flick. They gave the film a different flavor and texture. Spy movie lovers who are not comic book fans can actually appreciate the craft done on this sequel.

The only throw back on this one is to comic book geeks, there is nothing they can hide. We actually know who among the characters are the trustworthy and who's not. We are actually expecting that they will throw some unexpected turncoats but they didn't. For us, the film is predictable. Hell that twist with [spoiler] is so over used that I actually yawned in the cinema. Good for those who don't read comic books and they will enjoy the mystery and the thrill of finding out who they need to trust.

In terms of acting, believe it or not this film got a lot of fairly decent to average performances. Quite good for a super hero flick. And wait, don't forget about the action scenes. They are all breathtaking. The hand to hand combat are so flawless and intense. So far the best fight scene in Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ok I'm stopping there before I spill some spoilers. To sum it up, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a breath of fresh air not only for the Captain America franchise but to the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you are a bit tired of superhero movies, try The Winter Soldier and it will not fail you.

Open up Your Senses: Wait Until Dark Review

As much as I enjoyed some previous and excited with some upcoming Musicals, I consider straight plays as my front liners this year with reasons I already mentioned so many times before. And I'm so lucky to witness my first straight play this year, of course from Repertory Philippines titled "Wait Until Dark".

A sinister con man, Roat, and two ex-convicts, Mike and Carlino, are about to meet their match. They have traced the location of a mysterious doll, which they are much interested in, to the Greenwich Village apartment of Sam Hendrix and his blind wife, Susy. Sam had apparently been persuaded by a strange woman to transport the doll across the Canadian border, not knowing that sewn inside were several grams of heroin. When the woman is murdered the situation becomes more urgent. The con man and his ex-convicts, through a cleverly constructed deception, convince Susy that the police have implicated Sam in the woman's murder, and the doll, which she believes is the key to his innocence, is evidence. She refuses to reveal its location, and with the help of a young neighbor, figures out she is the victim of a bizarre charade. But when Roat kills his associates, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues between the two. Susy knows the only way to play fair is by her rules, so when darkness falls she turns off all the lights leaving both of them to maneuver in the dark until the game ends.

I have some issues about the show but mainly more about the material. Personally I prefer Suspense thrillers with more mystery on it. It adds up to the chills and excitement build up of the show. The writer's choice of revealing everything in the start of the show is a bit off for me. because of that, it makes me expect for more and it disappoints me that I didn't get what I expect in the end.

Good thing the cast assembled for "Wait Until Dark" makes up for the shortcomings of material. It is a thrill to see Philippines' finest talents grace the stage as they breath life to the play's characters. Robbie Guevara, back from his straight stint as a director in 9 Works Theatrical plays the funny and clumsy ConMan 1 aka Sgt. Carlino. It is so fun to see him play the show's funny guy. As a comic relief, Robbie perfectly executed his wacky moments. I'm seen him play serious roles but I guess Robbie is just born for this kind of roles. You should have seen him in "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown". Joel Trinidad is also not bad at all as he plays the Con Man 2 aka Mike Talman. As always his performance is anything but horrible and I expect that from somebody I actually considered as one of the best.

And finally of course who would not love Liesl Batucan. Her strong performance as Suzy Hendrix, a blind woman is the heart and soul of the show. Of course I already saw Liesl play so many roles before but this one just pushed her acting prowess beyond. Though I mentioned before that I'm a bit disappointed with the weak material, Liesl's performance just reignited my interest and gave me a good reason to be excited with the succeeding scenes. Suzy may be introduced as the damsel in distress but Liesl shows that there is a Darkness inside her just waiting to come out. Definitely a performance everyone should witness because it is Liesl, at her best. I can't even imagine what this woman can show more in the future. Magnificent!

The rest of the cast did pretty well too though most of them didn't really give that much of an impression. Take Arnel Carrion who played Roat for example, I find his performance weak and forgettable. Of course there is a legit reason for that. But still it is a performance and I've known him for being a good actor. I just felt he can do better despite the fact that he only got the script 6 days before the opening night. I may also add that it could be also the fault of the material itself. Like I said, I have problems with the "revelation" in the start of the play. Because of this, it makes Arnel's role less sinister and flat.

But despite some shortcomings, Wait Until Dark definitely deserves everyone's attention. It is fun to listen and dance to show tunes but treating ourselves with some pure acting goodness may help our artistic sensibilities grow and Love the craft even more.

The Fabulous and Gritty World of Maxie: Maxie the Musicale

Have you seen Maxie the Musical? Well if not you probably need to rush because the show is closing tomorrow. I want to give this show an artsy fartsy review but I guess the easiest way to convince everyone is to just say that it is a fun show and you will definitely enjoy it.

Maxie the Musical is a Stage and musical Adaptaion of the critically acclaimed indipendent film "Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros" written by Michiko Yamamoto and Directed by Auraeus Solito in 2005. It tells a story about a young gay boy and his life in the slums with his father and brothers.

Think this story is like any other gay oriented stories? Think again because, one unique quality of this movie is his family accepts him despite the fact that they are all straight men. This is the movie/play's main strength. Here gays are not discriminated but loved and respected.

As a play, Maxie the Musical preserves the mood and texture of source material. In the set design alone, it is the complete opposite of what you will expect from a gay oriented musical play. No Pink at all. The design is dark, rusty and dirty. I also applaud how the flamboyant moments compliment the gritty realities of life. The show is not as strong or compelling as most of the play I've seen but it is entertaining enough for me to enjoy.

Of course it is also a treat to see some of the magnificent names in theater community joining the cast. Names such as Nazer Salcedo (Paco), Al Gatmaitan (Boy), Jay Gonzaga (Bogs) and Jules Dela Paz to name a few. Names synonymous to excellence which makes this show a must watch. The title role played by Jayvhot Galang (Maxie) also deserves a high five for giving a remarkable performance in his professional theater debut. And also before I forgot, this play is directed by one of my favorite Theater Director, Dexter M. Santos who are famous from some of his magnificent projects sych as Rizal X and Orosman at Zafira.

So there. I hope I gave you enough reason to see it. I promise that you will never regret it. You still have 2 shows tomorrow. There's a 3pm and 8pm shows. 9 Works Theatrical Ends 2013 with a Success: Grease

All good things must come to an end, and that includes incredible musicals such as 9 Works Theatrical's Grease. It is hard to see this production end for I consider it as 9 Works Theatrical's greatest, instantly replacing The Wedding Singer as my all time favorite.

So why like Grease? First of all, why not. Grease is a fun show. If you think the movie is great, I assure you that the original live version is 10 times better. In fact, you will hate the movie after you see this one. Material-wise, Grease is a story about youth rebellion set on a High School called Rydel High. The movie has the same idea but threads away from the original vision. Grease is reach with stories to tell and every characters have their own moments to share. This is my main gripe because the movie version is heavily butchered and transformed into a cheap West Side story Knock off that centers only on the Love story of Sandy and Danny. The rewrites also damaged some of the important character development. In the movie, the rivalry between Sandy and Rizzo is not highlighted. I believe there is also between Danny and Kenickie. Like what I mentioned earlier, supporting cast are not given the chance to shine. Thanks Hollywood for ruining a great material.

Back to the show, Grease is not just Fun. Grease has swag, it is fierce and it got attitude. You will definitely notice it from start to end. Like The Wedding Singer, Grease' opening number is the perfect way to start such musicals. Lively and loud. Instantly it catches people's attention and keeps our blood rushing with tunes that literally leave our feet tapping on every beat.

Another thing you will notice first on the opening is the set and lights. Before the opening starts, the cast performs on a silhouette then bam, the whole stage lights up unveiling a magnificent set design. Just like what I expect. Another masterpiece from the set design genius, Mio Infante. The lights itself also catches my attention. I never thought RCBC has the equipment for this Lighting Design. Well it turns out 9 Works Theatrical bought/rent their own equipment to be added to the current setup in Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium. Talking about dedication. I commend 9 Works for spending more for the lights and of course getting the talented John Batalla for the Lighting Design Execution. Definitely the best among all of his works that I saw.

And of course the actors. Hmmm let's see. In general, everybody did an incredible job for Grease. I believe I don't really have any reservations for the performers. I watched the show last week and I strongly believe that they nailed it perfectly just like how I envision it. But of course there are some performance that stands out from the rest.

Ever since I saw Frencheska in the movie "Emir", I was already hoping that she try stage musicals. And after a long wait, here she is playing the role loved by so many. I'm also thrilled to hear her perform live as oppose to just listening to her on TV or Movies. Her voice is so powerful that it will creep all over your body creating a sensation that will definitely quench your musical thirst.

Another unforgettable performer is Jennifer Blair-Bianco. She definitely captured my whole attention the moment she lead the gang in the opening number. As Betty Rizzo, Jennifer embodies the perfect girl that has the power of an Alpha Female. It also helps that she has this commanding presence and a face that both strong and exquisite. Yep, that jaw also seals the deal. I'm absolutely in love now.

And we have Gian as Danny Zuko. This guy never fails to impress me. The passion and dedication he is pouring on his projects are just unparalleled. He is no longer that pop singer we know years ago. He proved that there is something more on him and that is his skills in acting. As a singer, no doubt he is excelling on that field but as an actor, he is definitely improving every time he transforms on every show he accepts. Looking forward to see him explore more roles in the future.

Also another scene stealer is newcomer Rafa Siguion-Reyna who played Kenickie. Not a memorable performance but decent enough to make the girls (and some guys) swoon over his natural charm. Move over Daniel Padilla, Aljur Abrenica and Alden Richards. We have a legit talent here.

There are more good things to say about Grease but I guess I don't need to enumerate them all here just to prove how excellent it is. Robbie Guevara (Director) and Santi Santamaria (executive Producer) definitely did it again. They proved that they can outshine all more established Theater companies in Manila. As one of those who witnessed their growth, it is official -- the little kid is now a grown man. 9 Works Theatrical congratulations. Till the next show.

The Good and Bad of Thor the Dark World

Though I think there are some minor hiccups for Thor The Dark World, I'm confident to say that anyone can enjoy it as it is. But since a lot of us enjoys some little bashing, I will try to enumerate some of the things that makes Thor: the Dark World a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

The Good

Asgard is bigger than ever. One thing that makes the first movie very memorable is the depiction of Asgard. If you think Asgard is gorgeous in the first movie, this sequel makes it breathtaking. And it doesn't end in Asgard as the production design stretches its muscles to the other realms across Yggdrasil. Though we didn't see much of some the realms, they did a good job on giving them distinct designs.

Fight scenes are bad ass. The other realms are constantly threatening peace on every realms leaving Asgard as the one who maintains peace. So we got to see a lot of war scenes and they are bigger now. Alan Taylor sure knows how to handle such scenes and they are quite effective. The fight scenes becomes more interesting and exciting.

Real Sets, Real Action. A departure from the first film, Thor The Dark World now uses more real sets for Asgard and the other realms. In the first film, Midgard/Earth is the only one who uses real location shoots. But now, the world beyond ours gets an organic treatment with real trees, real soil and real rocks exploding in background as the actors fight for their lives.

Actors are superb. No questions to this. Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman. Such names already proved their worth in the business and they are still proving it everytime they do movies like this. Thor The Dark World maybe just one of those superhero movies we watch, but the acting chops we get from the cast are definitely high end.

The Bad

The story telling is all over the place. Yes we get the main plot but I find it a little annoying how the story unfolds. It is like I'm watching a TV serial which in my taste don't really work on a feature film. And the reason is probably because ...

There are too many elements to handle. Other than the main story that revolves around Malekith and the Dark Elves, there are more elements present in the plot that congest the film's overall story. We got Jane looking for ways to contact Thor, Sif trying to win Thor from Jane, the family issues between the members of House of Odin, we also got Erik Selvig's slow descent to madness and of course they still managed to inject the funny girl Darcy. Of course as expected not all of this elements can be resolved in less than 2 hours so what happened? Some of the characters are just dropped. Yes, most of them just vanished in the background. It really breaks my heart that some of them didn't shine on this film as much as they are in the first movie. And this leads to an Uninspired and weak presentation of roles.

In the end, in my opinion Thor The Dark World steps up to a new level from its predecessor for giving us a stunning and beautiful world. They just need to look for a better scribe that can write a more solid and appealing script. We need all those characters back on the spotlight. I know the movie is titled Thor but it doesn't mean that the movie should be all about him alone.

Love, Lies and Betrayal: Closer (Review)

Some of us believe that Love makes everything beautiful. Love bends all laws of reality and perception just to please every senses that we have. Well that is the Sunday school version. Love is in fact the most ugliest and probably the most dangerous thing we will ever encounter in our life. And I won't sugar coat it, because that is what this play I saw weeks ago showed me.

Written by the english playwright Patrick Marber, Closer is a cautionary tale about four people who crosses paths because of guess what... Love. But this is not your typical four way Love yet it happens everyday without most of us noticing it probably because we are all so busy and disillusioned by the fairytale concept of this four-lettered feeling. Marber's depiction of Love puts every character in this play on a wild rolleroaster ride of emotional explotions that left everyone of them scarred for life. The story and material is a brilliant work of art but still an ugly picture of human condition. I thought I already saw all kinds of Love stories but Closer is definitely one of those that hit me so hard.

Though the material wounded me and left me contemplating about Life, the actors who played every character gave me a counter pleasure for my heartache. These four talented artists gave me a night of orgasmic performance that it makes me feel like I'm enjoying a meal prepared by the gods. Mark Abaya's confused and conflicted Dan makes a good contrast to Bart Guingona's refined but commanding Dr. Larry and I can also say the same with Cris Villonco's mischievous Alice to Angel Aquino's quiet but determined Anna. I can't hardly ask for more because these people gave me everything, probably even more. And also I strongly advise the theater newcomers (Angel and Mark) that they should do more plays because this is definitely a calling sent from above.

Of course the whole meal is nothing without the chef. I mentioned that the show is like a meal prepared by the eternals? Well that is an understatement because Ana Abad Santos is absolutely one of the best Director out there. One of my favorite Actor and Director in the industry. I first fell in Love with her work as a Director with Repertory's The 39 Steps. On that project, I saw her conviction and she knows her material. So I never doubted her when I found out she is directing this play. This is trully another addition to her long list of successful triumphs.

Summing everything up, if we speak about material, Closer could leave you with a heavy heart. it deals with reality and like what many people say, reality bites and it bites hard enough to make you bleed. Closer will show you the other face of that fairy tale Love story we all know and it is ugly and extremely depressing. But with a good set of people working on it from actors, director and staff, Closer is one hell of a show that you should never miss.

The Wolverine Movie Review

The Wolverine is now showing in all cinemas across the nation and a lot of people are still asking if it surpasses its predecessor who received a lot of negative critical reception. I'll just make this brief because I know some Wolverine fans are not really in to in-depth reviews.

Things you will like about The Wolverine:

The film has a strong foundation and that is the story. Unlike the first Wolverine film who chocked the movie with numerous number of mutants, The Wolverine tells us a story that don't involve a lot of the Homo Superiors. This only proved how versatile Wolverine's mythos. Also in contrast to the first movie, this is the first time I'm not excited about the fight scenes. The story is enough to make me glued on my seat and wait what will unfold next.

They have the best Japanese actors they can get in Hollywood and from Japan itself. I was a little disappointed with a recent film when one of its lead, a Japanese actress failed to impress or at least give a satisfactory performance. Giving her the benefit of the doubt, I just credited it to her not being use to the language. But with The Wolverine, the actors are magnificent both on Japanese and English dialogues. The ensemble compliments Jackman's acting prowess and created this unique dynamics among the casts.

The movie marks 20th Century Fox's launch of their own Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the success of Walt Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe (The Avengers), Fox together with their official consultant Mark Millar is now creating a universe for Fox's own Marvel pool of characters. This is why we advice everyone that they stay put during the creits of The Wolverine to see a teaser for the next Marvel movie on Fox. You will definitely like it.

There are several things that I didn't like about The Wolverine like the misleading marketing materials and some changes from the source material. But I can forgive them for that for giving us an excellent serving of a slice of life of our favorite berseker mutant.

Looking Through the Glitter and the Rotten: The Great Gatsby Movie Review

Gatsby? What Gatsby? Probably this is the same question most people asked when they first heard about the movie. Well at least from people who haven't got the chance to read the classic novel and watch all those other movie adaptation. Though many know that the name is synonymous to something suave, grand and extravagant, after watching this movie they will find out more than what they bargain for.

Warner Bros. Pictures The Great Gatsby tells a story about a wealthy man residing inside a big mansion in Long Island. A mysterious man that only few people know personally. They call him "Gatsby" (Leonardo Di Caprio). Though people have their own versions of stories about him, there is one thing they know that they all agree with: He likes to host big parties every now and then. Gatsby remains mysterious to everyone who attends his parties but not until the day he met Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), the only invited guest he ever had the pleasure to have inside his mansion.

To be very honest, I have an initial idea what the movie is all about. After all, Fitzgerald's novel is rather a very familiar piece in the academe. It is just a shame I didn't got the chance to read it. I know how the book alludes social issues and sensibilities. Though it tells about a certain tragic Love story, the whole novel is a device to show how rotten the society back then. This version by Baz Luhrman in my opinion tried to show that and with the use of modern technology he created a lush production design that gave contrast between the Sparkle of the wealthy's lavish life in Long Island and East Egg and the nasty and foul face of the underprivileged in the Valley of Ashes. The social decay that exist on the back draft though can be easily overlooked by the Love story between Gatsby and Daisy (Carey Mulligan). That is why in the end, some may become disappointed about the ugly and extremely depressing resolution.

The performance though is not depressing at all. The ensemble is a mix of the most talented actors the movie can ever have.But among them Leo and Tobey stole the show as they showed mastery of their crafts as John Gatsby and Nick Carraway. I'm also thrilled to see Isla Fisher once again and this is my first time to see her on a dramatic role compared to her previous projects which are commonly comedies or animations.

The movie itself is like Gatsby who hides his true self, behind the beautiful facade is a decadence concealed in hundreds of pretentious smiles and scarred souls. Like what I mentioned, this movie can get in your nerve. Extremely depressing. But I believe it serves its purpose as it tells a universal truth about people's ugly nature.

Definitely not the movie you will want to watch to have a good time. If you are down then I suggest you skip this film. Be sure to have an open mind and strong chest for it will show you how this living world can also be the gates for hell.

New Face of Darkness: Star Trek Into Darkness Movie Review

I was never a Trekkie in my life. Never saw a single Star Trek Episodes from the orignal series and maybe a couple of episodes and movies from the later spinoffs but again never become a hardcore fan. But thanks to J.J. Abrams, he brought back this classic, reinvented it and make it appeal to new audience.

I still have doubts about the franchise after I saw the first film in 2009. But it did open my mind and interest to another genre. I surprisingly discovered my repressed love on Science Fiction. One thing that the first movie introduced to the new franchise is that this new movies are a little bit of a sequel and prequel to the original series and movies for it is actually an altered history of the Star Trek universe, a concept both applaud and frowned by some Trekkies.

That same concept is once again utilized on "Into Darkness". Without giving up a lot of details "Into Darkness" features another classic iconic Star Trek film (that I won't mention because it will give up a lot of spoilers). Benedict Cumberbatch as former star fleet officer Harrison stole the spotlight. Like most of his fans (from Sherlock) expected, Benedict offered a stunning performance as this film's primary Villain. His dynamics with the existing cast is flawless.

I also like how the whole movie focused on the Harrison case than giving a lot of air time for the existing characters. One thing I won't expect from feature films because the common exercise is to tell a story around the existing characters and leads. Into the Darkness did the opposite. This kind of storytelling can be seen more often on TV series and I like it that the film's writers gambled on this type of story telling. Having said that, the only damage that story telling made is it makes the audience hungry for more because after seeing the movie, it only feels like watching a TV special where you can see the next episode in just weeks not years.

Though not given a lot of highlights, I can say that the ensemble of the existing cast did pretty well on their respective roles. Again my favorite among all of them is Simon Pegg who plays Scotty. Pegg's eccentric banters never fail to entertain me and it almost broke my heart when I thought he will be gone on this movie. Thanks god it is just for a couple of scenes (scumbag writers!). Many people hates Chris Pine's performance but I believe that this film is a big improvement for him. The same with Zachary Quinto who delivered another excellent job as Spock. Lastly I thank the writers that they brought Carol Marcus on the image of Alice Eve. Never really like Uhura (Zoe Saldana) so it is a breath of fresh air to have another hot and beautiful actress on board the Enterprise.

All in all, Star Trek Into Darkness is an entertaining ride. Probably to some it lacks spectacle but with a great story telling and a solid cast, the film definitely deserves everybody's attention specially if you are a Science Fiction aficionado. Going Back in Time: D Wonder Twins of Boac Review

The first time I heard about PETA's D Wonder Twins of Boac, I immediately dismissed it since it is an adaptation of a Shakespeare play. I confess that I'm not really familiar with the source material and I don't really want to pretend that I'm interested to see it. But then I found out that one movie I saw before is actually adapted on the same play. So I decided to give it a try.

Basically the whole story revolves around twins separated by fate. The show though focused more on Viola (Cris Villonco) who got tangled on a comedy of errors in the world of 1967 Showbiz. It is a hilarious topsy turvy unfortunate events that makes her meet different people until she actually becomes reunited with her brother Bastian (Chrome Cosio). It is an absolute laugh trip to say the least.

Just basing my comparison to another adaptation, I believe D Wonder Twins perfectly adapted 12th Night and successfully brought it to local settings in the late 60's. The writers managed to match every character and created such variety of faces that illustrates the industry back on those era. The only weird thing that I notice is the title. To those who knows 12th Night, they will not argue about the misleading element of the title. To Shakespeare virgins, they will definitely assume that the show will be all about the twins but like what we all know, the show is majorly about Viola's life while Bastian is missing.

Cris Villonco's performance as Viola is excellent to say the least. Never really doubt her ever. First time to see her play a male role though. Not really perfect but enough for the character. I also enjoyed Ms. Shamaine's take of Olivia. The rest of the cast did very well on giving us an entertaining show making us laugh and shed some tear or two.

D Wonder Twins successfully gave us a serving of a classic literature at the same time it also gave us a peek back in time where the glitz and glamor hides the bitter truth behind local showbiz industry. It is a fun ride all together but ends with a powerful eye opener to things we don't really see beyond the spotlights.

Still Believing in Love: They're Playing our Song Review

After a year of hiatus, 9 Works Theatrical came back with a simple yet captivating production with Neil Simon, Carole Bayer Sager and Marvin Hamlisch's They're Playing Our Song.

Like what 9 Works Theatrical established for the past years, they chose to stage something way back in the calendar. In my opinion it is a big gamble for them because they don't really know if people will actually go and pay to see classics. But since most competitors are already staging more recent shows, 9 Works humbly stepped down and decides to restage long forgotten masterpieces.

Once again, Like Sweet Charity, They're Playing Our Song surprised me. The show is energetic and extremely funny. Though the rest of music is not really my cup of tea, the book alone captivated my senses. What really draws me to Vernon and Sonia's story is they are not fantasy. Well it is loosely based on the real love story of Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager, it means the romance is real. It is not like any love story you see on romantic movies or novels. The relationship don't follow any status quo. You will only experience pure and unadulterated romance between two person who in my own opinion doesn't have any chemistry at all.

Yes, you heard me right. Chemistry don't exist in real world and that is how I see Vernon and Sonia's relationship. Just like the actors who play them, Nikki Gil (Sonia) and Lorenz Martinez (Vernon) don't have the spark. But both definitely have the comedic chemistry for they both are naturally funny. Nikki had stepped up once again. She now makes her mark as she becomes one of the favorite theater performer that comes from our mainstream showbiz. I definitely enjoyed watching her now as the eccentric Sonia Walsk. Lorenz Martinez as expected makes us laugh with his spontaneous sarcasm but beyond that he proved that he can play a leading man type as he left girls (and some men) swooning over his charming voice as he play Vernon's role.

I enjoyed the performance of the voices played by Reb Atadero, James Stacey, Noel Rayos, Jill Peña, Peachy Atilano and Anna Santamaria. But they are easily overlooked. Not that it is their fault. In fact they gave it all they got. The only problem is the limitations of script.

The only time they actually shine in the show is when they are on this bar scene where they played completely different characters. One of them stands out. Peachy Atilano is definitely ready for matured roles without looking like an underage girl.

And the stage. The magnificent stage. If you think the show is simple and intimate, the set is the complete opposite. The set is bursting with details. All the elements are detachable and can be removed and attach every time they are needed. The stage also used a round table mechanism which is intentionally used to simulate a turntable. Looks like They're Playing Our Song's set is practically more expensive than Rent and Sweet Charity combined. Mio Infante totally outdid himself. This is probably one of his finest yet.

If I have to compare any contemporary to They're Playing our Song. It has to be Music and Lyrics. Like the musical, Music and Lyrics tells a story of a composer and a Writer/Lyricist. Like Sonia and Vernon, Alex (Hugh grant) and Sophie (Drew Barrimore) don't have any chemistry but their is an X-Factor that makes them look good together. Both stories tells a roller coaster relationship that's not so conventional like most stories are.

In a nutshell, They're Playing Our Song will make you fall in Love in an unconventional way. This is not like your average teleserye or "kilig" movie. Experience the romance, watch the show as it closes today at 4pm. Get your tickets at Ticketworld and call 8919999. It is not too late to celebrate Valentines, celebrate it with something real. The Magnificent Life of Pi

Ok vacation is over. Holidays did gave me distance to my blog this past few months just to change my habits. Don't worry I'm not leaving my blog, I just want to bounce back to my old habits and getting back on my working mode. But enough of the rambling yes I'm back for another movie review. 2013's first week is such a treat for seeing 2 interesting films. I will start with 20th Century Fox's Life of Pi.

Like what I mentioned on my previous post about the movie, it didn't give much of a good impression to me a first. And yes I don't know the book so don't throw me the "it is a fantastic book, you should know it" line because I really just don't care. So what is my first impression about the movie according to trailers. Well according to the trailer, Life of Pi is a story about a boy who survived a shipwreck on a life boat. Unfortunately he is not alone and he is joined by a Bengal Tiger on board the supply cache. Other than that the trailer didn't shell out more about the plot instead it gave a lot of video montage featuring the vast ocean on different states and yes, more of the lead actor and the Tiger. All I can see on this trailer is somehow a Jungle Book like story minus the jungle and race for survival like Tom Hank's Castaway.

Then fast forward to weeks ago when I revisited it. I found out that the movie are praised by critics and even called the next Avatar. I'm not sure but being compared to Avatar gave me more doubt. So now I become curious. I was antsy to read infos about the movie and the book. But I stopped myself, because I don't want to be spoiled. So I stayed away from them including some of the PR materials of Fox.

I'm very glad I did.

Last week I finally got the chance to see it. I was caught off guard by the film. Personally speaking, it is nothing like the things I read online. A lot of people praises the visuals which is stunning nonetheless. But it is just a cherry on top. Life of Pi may have a very simple story but the way it is told makes it unforgettable. The intense and infectious emotions resonate on the whole cinema. The adventure is more than just a physical trip but a journey of minds as the movie preserves the book's narrative structure by sticking to old fashioned story telling than overly depending on reenactments through actors. Ang Lee gives audience the chance to imagine and visualize the story without being spoon fed. Life of Pi is a movie that will be more appreciated by people who loves reading text novels than those who love graphic fictions. The downside of this is you should always be attentive and try not to sit close to annoying kids inside the cinema. There are a lot of talking in the film that you need to listen to and absorb. Noisy moviegoers are the last people you will want while watching this literary genius.

The characters are surprisingly endearing. I thought Jamal of Slumdog Millionaire is the last Indian character I will ever love in Hollywood films but Pi just captured my heart. Suraj Sharma has a bright future for him in Hollywood though I suggest that he do more dramatic roles first rather than doing box office type movies or he may end up like Dev Patel who starred on a flop Last Airbender. His raw performance in Life of Pi is still not a Box Office material but he will definitely get there.

Wrapping up my brief review about the film, Life of Pi is a magnificent film. But I'm afraid to say that it is not a movie for everyone. If you are the one who gets bored of narratives and endless journeys then the film is definitely not for you.

Sky will Fall Today: Movie Review

So I need to write about Skyfall without really talking about "Skyfall" itself. And I'm also not allowed to talk about the twists and those fun details on the denouement. To be honest I don't know how because basically those are the best part of the movie and it will really give you a smile (or a tear) when you finally see those revelations. But since I still need to convince everyone (like I really need to do that), I will try. So here it goes.

Skyfall is by far the most mainstream among the 3 Daniel Craig 007 stories. Remember the common attribute to the series as an origins arc? Now you will finally see a confirmation. It slowly transforms from that Gritty and serious James Bond movie from Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace to the James Bond we all use to know. The high tech gadgets are back (and so as Q) and the Bond who Philanders among girls that not necessarily the woman he Love is starting to come out. Also, you need to know that you don't need to see Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace to see this since it is written without so much hint of the previous movies. So everyone can actually see it.

"Oh I'm not sure if I can top that trick. Maybe a triple backflip will work."

Of course the explosive scenes and the exotic locales are still present and that motorcycle chase scene in the opening is one of my favorite. We do already saw some motorcycle chase scenes on rooftop but I guess this is the first time we will see a motorcycle chase scene on rooftops of Istanbul, Turkey. I really thought that chase scene I saw on Taken 2 (which is also done on the same location) is already kick-ass but this chase scene in Skyfall got "we are better" shouting all over their faces. It is definitely wicked.

"Can I take a peek?"

The villain played by Javier Bardem is the kind of Villain you will either hate or like. Well I almost hated the character because the writer wrote him as another rogue MI6 agent who wants to seek revenge to the head of MI6, which is M (Dame Judi Dench). Yes, you know the peg right? As if we never saw the same plot in almost any spy movies now. But it turns out that the plot is just a facade for an interesting character. He sported an insanity of a homicidal maniac with the intelligence of world's greatest hacker. And his unique approach on the character will definitely prove how versatile Bardem is.

"Yes that's my car. Got a problem with that?"

I would really love to continue my ramblings about Agent 007 but I'm afraid that I might reveal some spoilers. I just have to say that Skyfall managed to be subtle but grand at the same time. You will absolutely like the ending though you may find it also saddening. I just wish this is not the last of Daniel Craig because I'm hungry for more.

Simple but Enlightening: Salmon Fishing in the Yemen Movie Review

Will you ever imagine that a fish can actually survive on a desert? If not, you are probably like Alfred Jones (Ewan McGregor). Dr. Jones, as his colleagues call him is a man on Asperger's syndrome and London's top expert in fisheries. One day, he is contacted by a certain Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt) representing a Yemeni Sheikh who likes to introduce Salmon Fishing in to the Yemen. As an expert, of course Dr. Jones insists it is impossible but when he met the Sheikh himself, he is enlightened of one thing that instantly changes everything that he believes in.

I already mentioned on my first post that this movie never really caught my attention when I first heard about it. I thought it is just one of those random romantic dramas. But when I did check the trailers and the movie description, the premise instantly gave a spark of interest inside my head. But then again after watching the film, I'm more surprised that it is not what I'm really expecting.

Of course there is a romantic angle between Fred (McGregor) and Harriet (Blunt) but the movie didn't just delve on that angle. I'm even expecting for love scenes but nah, there is none (unless it is cut). The movie is actually geared to the unlikely bond forged between three new friends: The Sheikh (Amr Waked), Fred and Harriet. More so, between this 3 characters are more struggles they need to deal with. From Fred's Marital problems, to Harriet's missing boyfriend and lastly the Sheikh's problem with his constituents. These layers of complications makes this seemingly simple story to an unexpected complex emotional process.

I also like how the movie used Faith and Religion as moral foundation for the film. And I'm glad it is well represented without being too preachy and very universal. Another interesting angle of the movie is how the British Prime Minister Press office works just to cover bad publicity. I was really expecting them to be more like those I saw on spy movies but they actually look like an ordinary office with ordinary researchers. And I really enjoy Patricia Maxwell's dragon lady persona (played by Kristin Scott).

Simple but enlightening. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen may not be your ordinary box office type of movie but one thing is for sure, this movie will make you feel good and will open up your heart for a perspective that can improve if not change your life. The Bear Necessities: Ted Movie Review

If you are somebody who thinks Ted is the movie no one will take seriously then you are absolutely right. Haha. But in a sense people can also find Ted more serious than what most people expect. I myself enjoyed it so much that I officially declared Seth Macfarlane as one hell of a genius.

Not really a regular viewer of Family Guy but I did saw numerous episodes and though there are noticeable similarities, Ted served something different to the audience... drama. There are occasional drama in Family Guy but it is really rare but I never really imagined Seth Macfarlance giving us an emotional film. The film talks about brotherhood and friendship in the deepest form which is something I won't really look for on a Seth Macfarlane material. And the strange thing about that, the Drama and the iconic Macfarlane humor blend well together.

I don't really need to go further with my review since the movie is pretty damn what you see is what you get. All I want to emphasize is if you are a hardcore Family Guy fan, you may find Ted a little melodramatic but if you can stand it, Ted is a wild ride of fun and excitement with a lesson or two to draw inspiration from. And well, Mila Kunis is in this movie so that is another good reason to see it. Right?

The Curious Case of Bryan Mills: Taken 2 Movie Review

Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) is back for yet another action packed movie in Taken 2 but this time instead of Kim (Maggie Grace), Bryan and his ex-wife Lenore are the one kidnapped by the Albanians seeking revenge for their families killed by the retired CIA agent. Will he escape the hands of the people who are thirsty for his blood or will he do what he is best for?

Taken 2 is probably one of the most anticipated movie of the year mainly because of the big success of the first movie. Though he already played quite numerous amount of roles in action movies, this film established Liam Neeson's action star status by playing a retired CIA agent which is in my opinion is even better than James Bond. How good? Well Bryan Mills is practically not an ordinary man who has plenty of strange but amazing set of skills. Hey he can even calculate his direction and distance just by listening to sounds. And his fighting skills didn't even diminished since the last time. He is still the same Bryan Mills who took down all those Albanians in the first movie and that is where all the bad things about Taken 2 starts.

When the movie starts, the film introduces these elderly Albanians burying their love ones who are the same people Bryan killed in the first movie. Imagine how angry are they. And I as the audience felt that. I feel scared for Bryan. The tension goes intense when they killed (or probably not because it is not shown) Bryan's friend in Paris. Ok, I'm convinced they are scary and angry. But it turns out these villains are just a bunch of stupid idiots who embarks on a mission without even planning everything. And we know Bryan, he is a God. He easily escaped and went back killing every single Albanians without even shedding a sweat. In a nut shell, audience still root for the underdog. No matter how strong your protagonist, we still want to see them fall. Even the Avengers are almost defeated right? The movie could be much better if the writer put somebody who can match Bryan's skills. And these villains are definitely not them. Believe me you won't even believe how Bryan defeated the leader of his captors.

Lastly, I'm so disappointed that Kim didn't do some butt kicking action. Running on rooftops and throwing grenades on an empty car park is kinda meh for me. I can practically do that... well except hopping from rooftop to rooftop. I'm actually expecting more from her character. Maybe Bryan should start training her, teach her all that he knows and create his own Hit-Girl who can defend herself from any threat.

Taken 2 served practically everything what the first Taken movie gave us but it comes short on serving something new and exciting. As much as many thinks that a third installment is quite a stretch for the franchise, I would be happy to see another one... a BETTER one. I want to know more about Bryan's past and maybe an intense finale to wrap up the series.

Still watchable, but if you really like the first, you may find Taken 2 boring and flat. Take your chances. Taken 2 is now showing in all cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

A Twisted Return to Hogwarts: Potted Potter Review

Saw Potted Potter last Tuesday and just like what I expected, I enjoyed it a lot. I really thought before that the magic of the books stopped in the movies but I guess J.K. Rowling's legacy will live on different ways you can't even expect and this show is just one of them.

Potted Potter is a story telling session fused with stand up comedy act conceived by Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner. When I first heard of it, I'm quite puzzled on how will they cram all those 7 books to a very brief 70 minute show. In that case, every book has an average of 10 minutes each? How is that possible? Well you won't really understand it until you see it for yourself. Surprisingly, 70 minutes is enough to give entertainment to the audience and make everybody laugh and have a good time. There are wizard battles, dragon, Nagini and even the famous Quidditch is inserted on the show where audience is given the chance to participate. Ha! You really need to see that part of the show because it is totally fun.

I love both of the actors featured in the show. Jesse Briton and Gary Trainor carried the whole performance excellently. Both actor has good chemistry and they have managed to forge a perfect rapport with the audience. I also noticed that some scenes are improvised and ad libs are performed based on how the audience will react to a certain dialogue or joke. The actors came well prepared of local facts that they can use to personalize the script and make it a little unique for Manila.

But if people are expecting that they will be educated with Harry Potter facts, you may not get it. Because this show is strongly parodied. It is so twisted that you can't hardly see the HP reference if you never read the books or watch the movies. In other words, only Harry Potter fans can fully enjoy it.

The Bourne Legacy Movie Review

Just saw Bourne Legacy last night and because I'm late, I won't be commenting about the plot. I'll probably save that when I saw it again. So basically, I just sat there and try to comprehend what the movie is all about and wait for the main reason why I'm there: to see the scenes shot in Manila.

For somebody like me who haven't seen the first 3 movies top-billed by Matt Damon, I can't really say how fateful the movie is at least in terms of texture and style. Getting a different director don't necessarily mean that it will be different. I understand the main idea of the story but what I really need to do is watch the first Trilogy. Yes, to fully appreciate this film, you need to watch the previous movies because there are a lot of characters, terminologies and important plot points that an audience needs to know. The movie tried to give recaps on some past characters specially Jason Bourne but of course they don't have the luxury of time and they are limited by short verbal explanations for those details. And to somebody who didn't saw the first 3 movies, it is hard to catch-up.

The Manila scenes is basically all of those clips released online (some of them are published here). But there are also scenes not shown on those clips. It is longer than I expected. It is not explosive but should I say more on the exciting and riveting side. On this movie, I realize that it is possible to have a massive chase scene in Manila. I'll have to give the Manila crew thumbs up for a job very well done.

Did Jeremy Renner live up to the expectations. Personally I can say yes. I think ever since Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, I already saw Renner's big potential on being a lead and he proves that he can actually deliver and carry a franchise on his back (figuratively and literally). Now did he surpasses Matt Damon's performance in the first 3 movie? That I can't answer... for now.

Rachel Weisz as always is brilliant female lead. She is definitely one of those actress that are not only just your common damsel in distress but she is one hell of a lady who can deliver excellent acting performances. Ok I can be very biased when it comes to her but hell seriously? Who would not fall in love on such beauty and talent? I have been in love with this woman ever since The Mummy (and yes including that so called mediocre Constantine) and never in a single moment of my life that I stopped adoring this absolutely incredible performer.

I also want to give a big shout out to Mr. John Arcilla, Ms. Madeleine Nicolas, Lou Veloso, Anne Garcia and Ruby Ruiz who plays some of the crucial roles on the film. Though not really named (except Arcilla's who is given the name Joseph), the 5 of them together with all the other actors gave performance that we can be proud of. After all, in Hollywood there is no big or small roles.

In a nut shell, The Bourne Legacy production wise is promising and you will definitely enjoy seeing all those Manila scene. Come on, it is very rare that Manila plays Manila on an international film. Might as well enjoy it. I will definitely watch it again but hopefully after I saw the first Bourne Trilogy. I may publish a follow-up review after watching all of them.

Looking Back on Forgotten Memories: 13 the Musical

Do you still remember everything about your past experience? Of course we don't really forget faces, important experiences and monumental events that occurred in our lives. But some of us tend to forget details specially if those experiences are not so good. And I'm one of those people. I can hardly remember my teen years. Maybe because those are the times that people actually bullied me and considered to be on the bottom of the food chain so they speak. But years past I regret forgetting those memories because going with my life without them is an empty journey. Thank God, 13 the Musical came to remind me.

13: The Musical brings back all the wonderful (and horrific) memories of adolescence through a story that will strike a chord with anyone aged 13 and up. The scenes are familiar – featuring first kisses, blackmail, bullying, courtship, and many other moments of being 13 years old – but shown under a sweeter, more poignant, and more mature light than your average coming-of-age teenage story. Presented by Ateneo Blue Repertory, with a young cast who still remembers how the world looked in the eyes of a 13 year old, 13: The Musical is a nostalgic musical journey down the road of growing up.

It may sound like another High School Musical or Glee but the big difference is 13 the Musical's narrative focuses on the character's struggle on their everyday life. They are not singers, actors or glee club members. They are just like you, a regular Jock, Geek, or even that horrible bitch or jerk that you hate. With characters presented in their most genuine characterization, expect that you will definitely see yourself on these roles and let you reflect on your own past experiences as a teenager.

Of course it also helps that Ateneo Blue Rep's talents are doing a good job on portraying their respective roles. They always amaze me. RJ Santillan (Evan) is a natural and he plays his role with great precision and with full confidence. Bernice Reyes (Patrice) is an absolute charmer. Though I believe her character lacks character development, she still get's my attention not just because she is beautiful but she did take her role seriously and she connected to me specially on that final song.

Another actor that caught my attention is somebody called Eddie. I'm very sure that you will definitely notice this actor because of the cool dreadlocks. But other than that, this actor exhibits enthusiasm and energy ever since the minute this actor steps on the stage. You may think that hey, that is not so special. Well wait till you find out that this Eddie is not your average actor. Eddie is actually a she. I'm so impressed because it is rare to find cross dressing female that plays male characters that can actually play it without giving any hint that they are female actors. In my experience, even some veteran actors can't pull it perfectly. Nikki Surtida nails the part flawlessly and that makes her my absolute favorite in the cast.

I've already said this before and I will say it again, Ateneo Blue Rep is definitely one of the best maker of great talents in local theater scene. Thanks Ateneo Blue Rep for making me realize that experiences are still worth remembering. No matter how bad they are. Good job, Direk Toff de Venecia. I wish you will continue directing more productions in the future.

The Amazing Spider-man Movie Review

Just saw Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-man last night and it is indeed amazing to say the least. Though to be honest, it is not the same feeling when I first saw The Avengers. It doesn't have the same wow factor but it is still a good movie to experience.

First of all I want to give rest to the question most people are keep on asking: Which is much better, Raimi's version or Webb's version? I believe as a whole, both film franchise stands out on their own. Raimi's version is campy while Webb is more darker and dramatic. I can't really compare the two for they just gave the mythos two distinct servings. We can't even argue about how one of the movie is more faithful to the original material because trust me, even this new film has a lot of inconsistency to the comic. In the end one thing is for sure, I'm happy with this rebooted film but I will still watch the old franchise without diminished respect (except Spider-man 3 of course).

Now the actors are completely different story. This is where The Amazing Spider-man excelled. The film assembled a fantastic cast who is absolutely much better than the previous one. Of course the one who stands out the most is Andrew Garfield who exhibits a much better execution of the character (Peter Parker/Spidey) than Tobey Maguire. Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker is more organic and not just a character who pops out of a comic book page like how he is portrayed in the previous incarnation. Garfield's Peter is an absolute manifestation of innocence and mischief, an embodiment of contemporary youth of this generation.

The new Spider-man costume looks a lot better now that we finally saw it in the film. Spidey now looks more like a creature than a heroic masked vigilante. This costume design combined with Andrew Garfield's skinny built created a somehow very organic image of Spider-man as if his costume is his actual skin. I also appreciate how the production lessen the usage of CGI on Spidey. This is what I really hate about the first trilogy where most of the Spidey shots looks so fake and the routines are too synthetic. In TASM, actual people are doing the stunts resulting to a more realistic acrobatic sequences that you will definitely enjoy.

I would really be happy to discuss more about this movie but I believe that is already not necessary. I think I know that even before you read this you are already planning to see it. And even if I ask you to forget the previous Spider-man movie, I know you can't. But there are things in the past we really need to let go. For now, forget the previous Spider-man movies. Watch Marc Webb's rendition of Spider-man and enjoy it to the fullest.
