Every six months like clockwork, I have readers flocking here to find out how to watch General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) online. Though I don't blog here as often I have in the past, I want to make sure you get what you're looking for. In order to accomplish that, I want to send you to LDS.org where you can out everything you need to know about how to watch General Conference online or from anywhere you happen to be. Enjoy the conference!

We may not know all the reasons why the prophets and conference speakers address us with certain topics in conference, but the Lord does. President Harold B. Lee taught: “The only safety we have as members of this church is to … give heed to the words and commandments that the Lord shall give through His prophet. There will be some things that take patience and faith. You may not like what comes from the authority of the Church. It may contradict your [personal] views. It may contradict your social views. It may interfere with some of your social life. But if you listen to these things, as if from the mouth of the Lord Himself, with patience and faith, the promise is that ‘the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; … and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name’s glory’ (D&C 21:6).”

The Essential Need to Be Connected

All human beings have the essential need to be strongly connected to others for life, in order to experience meaningful relationships and ultimately to feel unconditional love.

When this need is not met with some degree of satisfaction, a person will generally experience a sense of detachment from people in general, mild to severe depression, and worst of all feel unloved. Each of us belongs to the Family of God and have felt His perfect love in abundance. The undetected, spiritual remembrance of such love, instilled within every human heart, is a blessing from God intended to bring forth the desire in every individual to form their own family, in order to become like Him.

In this life then, it is natural for us to have a need to reconnect with the truth of who we really are - a child of God. Without the knowledge of our former existence and divine destiny (or testimony of such), many of our brothers and sisters have been persuaded to accept the current, progressive ideology that either a mother or a father is not necessary for the forming of a strong family; now being distorted in its 'modern' definition as two adults of any gender, legally bound (or not) who bring children into that coupling through various means including adoption, surrogacy, or laws created to support the distortion of what constitutes the natural, ideal family unit. The result of which is that the inherent entitlement of every child born is completely disregarded for the demands of a minority.

So it is not surprising that advice about how to choose happiness in family life is hard to give. Yet a loving Heavenly Father has set the same path to happiness for all of His children. The adversary is acutely aware of our pre-earth existence

Satan knows that his work is greatly threatened whenever the veil of forgetfulness is pierced, even momentarily, giving the forgetful son or daughter of God inklings of spiritual remembrance, which will likely cause them to pause and consider the possibility of something more, and often because of how they've tried or are trying to unknowingly recreate their former family experience, which perhaps, for one reason or another, isn't working so well.

Therefore, Satan places his greatest emphasis on undermining God's plan of happiness, centered in the family, by directing a concerted effort in the blatant distortion of, not only what constitutes a family, but also relationships between men and women set apart by God, for distinct and important purposes, in order to bring about their exaltation.
Therefore, we credit him as the author of divorce, demands for gender equality, same-sex marriage, adoption of children by gay couples, and in fact, every social and cultural ideology to redefine the family and what is marriage, which have come about with the intent to abolish the necessity and importance of the traditional family in society.

Currently, Satan's work appears to be effective as his lies are successfully embedded into the minds of the liberal media through politics, pop culture, entertainment, social science, etc., enabling his voice to strongly influence worldwide thought. The result being, a perceived, broad and negative attitude surrounding all things having to do with family, marriage, gender, equality, etc., having any basis in religious beliefs and moral values as both antiquated and not welcome in the public square of intellectual opinion.

Satan's work is completely anti-Christ in every possible way. God's work is to bring to pass the salvation of each of His children, through the plan of happiness, whereby exaltation is fixed and immovable for every one of His children born into mortality; accomplished through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Satan's refusal to accept that the Work God Commissioned of Jesus Christ is "finished"!

At the completion of the work (Atonement), that God commissioned His Son Jesus Christ to accomplish, by an oath and covenant, while hanging on the cross at Calvary, having taken upon himself the sins of all mankind in Gethsemane, Jesus, in agony, uttered these words, "It is finished".

Immediately after He spoke those blessed words, our Savior gave up His perfect life as a spotless sacrifice for every brother and sister belonging to the family of God, thus fulfilling His Father's will; ensuring that all mankind are saved and Exaltation is assured for all of God's children.

The God-given use of individual agency is the power to claim our Exaltation; fixed and immovable through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Finished. Done. Satan has no authority by which anything he does can affect the victory of Jesus Christ over physical and spiritual death. Nor can Satan's power to influence us to choose evil, take away the ability of a single soul to receive exaltation; unless a person chooses to give Satan their power by choosing him (evil) - the exact opposite of what we all fought for in the war in heaven.

In order for each child of God to claim their Exaltation (waiting at pick-up) they must once again choose God's "Finished" work, over Satan's lies (the world), in word and in deed; spiritually and physically.

Two Witnesses

Every person born (ability to progress) into mortality claimed (inherited), by keeping (choosing God), our first estate: first, the continued use of our God-given agency to make a choice between right or wrong... and second, a physical body, in order to act on a choice made. The purpose: to learn from the consequence of our choices to know good from evil and determine to choose the good, or rather God. (read about plan of happiness)

Here's another way to look at it... as a spirit in our pre-mortal state, through the exercise of God-given agency (self-will), we all made the conscious choice to follow Jesus Christ, in opposition to the reason that war broke out in heaven: Satan's rebellion against God's plan, presented to us by Jesus.

Using Agency to Choose God

In choosing the Savior Jesus Christ, over Satan, our Heavenly Father (author of the plan) added upon our ability to progress, an earthly experience that would help us become like our Heavenly Parents. In providing this mortal experience (opportunity to gain more knowledge), through physical birth (receive a body), we must walk by faith and choose to follow Jesus Christ, and accept His Atonement, over Satan's continued attempts to convince us of how we obtain happiness (good versus evil).

The conditions brought about through mortal existence provide a proving ground where our choice to follow the Savior is manifest and made acceptable by the law of witnesses, word and deed, (spiritual/agency and physical/body), in the midst of a fullness of opposition (knowledge of good and evil) in order to claim our divine destiny as sons and daughters of God.

Each of us, all brothers and sisters in the Great Family of God have been given everything necessary (agency/body/mortality), in order to claim the fullness of the blessings of God reserved for the faithful. In choosing to follow Jesus Christ and receive His plan we opened the door that enables us to make and keep sacred covenants through which God gives us power from on high, necessary for re-entry into His loving Presence to reunite with our Eternal Family, in our Heavenly Home.

Every son and daughter of God can lay hold upon our assured eternal destiny. We must exercise our agency to choose the right, or God, resulting in the natural consequence of the Atonement of Jesus Christ: Exaltation!

In a world where so many are now inclined to reject absolute truth, embracing the man-made ideology that there is no right and wrong, nor good versus evil, thus giving allowance for many to blatantly refuse to acknowledge that every choice they make (right or wrong) brings about its inevitable consequences directly related to good (God) or evil (Devil), in effect delay and/or reject at-one-ment with our Father in Heaven.

This is the reason The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is obsessed with teaching the world the importance of forming families in the way God has ordained. Everything contrary will keep us from our Father in Heaven's perfect love, and the great blessing of reuniting with the family of God. To those faithful, will be added the family we chose to create here in mortality, made Eternal.

The ultimate expression of God's perfect love for His children is to bestow upon all those who love Him and keep His commandments, His way Life, which is Eternal, and with His Family right beside Him.

These are some of the doctrines and principles that I heard expressed in the video, which I believe will touch the hearts of many as we share it with friends and family, and perhaps even create the opportunity to discuss some of these things.

The Family: A Proclamation to the World, is an inspired document, which teach the core beliefs and definition of a family. The Ideal family is led by a father and a mother in the home

Single parents are blessed through their membership in the Church, which connects them to the family of God, and where they receive needed help and encouragement.

Being a faithful member of the Church connects us to God's family.

God cares about marriage and family, because He cares about how we raise and teach our children.

God cares about how we treat our husband or wife.

Families built upon correct principles here, have the potential to become an eternal family.

The true source of happiness is found in the family as God has ordained.

What people often see in happy families, formed God's way, is their testimony of eternal life.

Taking time to study the gospel together builds a strong family.

Our families are the great defense against the outside world.

Recently a blog post citing a rise in suicides among LGBT+ Mormons has been circulating within my social networks. People can question these statistics (as they have), but that is beside the point. The reality is that there are people suffering, some of whom have tragically taken their own lives. I do not hide that I am probably more conservative (politically and theologically) than many of those most invested in helping and defending members of the LGBT+ community. I believe that most of these people do much good, and act out of genuine concern.

I have no doubt that Christ would reach out to LGBT+ individuals, especially those who suffer most, and I think many of the Christian LGBT+ advocates and allies hope to model their outreach after Him. Unfortunately, the dialog between these people and many traditional Mormons have not been particularly charitable or productive. Accusations of bigotry and godlessness are common, and one need look no further than this blog to see comment sections filled with indignation and bile—and it goes both ways.

One idea that has continued to irk me is the assumption that if you support the Church’s new policy, you must not truly care about the people who are affected by it, and its counterpart, that if you disapprove of the new policy, you must not be faithful. I believe neither of these assumptions is true. In this post, I only address the first, in part because I think many have already articulated the latter. As I approach this topic, let me begin by acknowledging that I am a heterosexual white male who is happily married and an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; I do not think this disqualifies me from addressing this issue, though I admit I may not always understand the experience of someone who identifies as LGBT+.

As I said, I have no doubt that Christ would reach out to individuals within our community who are suffering, including those who identify as LBGT+. How exactly He would do so is not so clear to me. In what follows, I will explain an alternative paradigm about relieving the pain and meeting the needs of people who experience same-gender attraction and/or identify as LGBT+. I begin with the premise that the psycho-emotional turmoil that can eventually lead to suicide among LGBT+ members of the Church (and others like them) stems from the tension between their identity and LDS doctrine and/or culture. Given this premise, I think most of us are likely to agree that 1) this tension should be addressed and 2) the current situation must change.

As many have pointed out, one way to relieve that tension is for the Church to make changes. Likely, some of the staunchest defenders of the recent policy change would agree, I hope, that some members have, if nothing else, spoken insensitively about non-normative sexuality. All can certainly become better at speaking with people who identify as LGBT+, and speaking about sexuality in general (and homosexuality in particular).

That said, tension exists between two points. In this case, one of those points is the Church. But it is one-sided to think that is the only possible path to relief; the tension could also be relieved by addressing the other point.

While some may defensibly say that the Church should do more to “accept these people for who they are,” it could also be advocated (just as defensible, in my opinion) that society should stop insisting that sexual orientation represents “who they really are.” A person who experiences same-sex attraction is many things, and sexual orientation need not be the defining characteristic. True, our highly individualized and sexualized society generally insists on making one’s sexuality among the most important aspects of identity, but perhaps, within our local church communities if nowhere else, we can transcend those broad societal pressures and cultivate relationships in which “who someone really is” has little or nothing to do with sexual orientation.

To explain what I mean by this, consider one’s skin color as an analogy to sexuality: In our society, skin color has tended to matter quite a lot in how we identify ourselves (arguably in a way similar to sexuality). However, I can imagine a society in which eye color mattered more than skin color. People would see me and, mostly ignoring my skin color, would notice and respond to my hazel eyes. There is nothing essential or necessary about which aspects of our appearance matter for identity. I think something similar could be said about sexuality. Our mode of categorizing sexual orientation currently matters quite a lot, but I can imagine a society in which it did not matter so much.

In that kind of society, one’s identity would not be implicated in the acknowledgment of same-sex attraction. If I found myself feeling attracted to other men, I would not necessarily experience a crisis of identity because I would not feel inclined to attribute to those emotions definitional authority. I believe this would diminish the tension between identity and Church doctrine and culture. Sexual identity would be less heavy in the weighing of identity because there would be other aspects of one’s self that were more culturally significant. Ironically, the now common insistence on identifying people by their sexual orientation and then on accepting them as that identity depends on and reinforces the belief that our society’s categorization of sexuality actually represents who these people really are. That belief is as necessary an ingredient in the anxiety-producing situation as is the Church’s culture or doctrine.

Tension results from the disparity between two poles, neither of which in this case is monolithic and immoveable. Admittedly, the identity end of the tension is harder to see because it is part of an ideology that is pervasive and ubiquitous—it’s in the air we breathe. But identity is not as simple and straightforward as some might like to think. I am not an expert, but I do have an academic interest in identity (in its relation to learning), so I believe my opinion is reasonably well-informed. I will simply say that, in my studies, identity is generally not considered stable or unitary (in fact, many scholars prefer the term “subjectivity” to avoid this connotation), but seen as emerging from the relationship between individuals and their sociocultural context. This suggests that it can be changed by altering the context within/against which one relates. “Who we really are” depends on the way we relate to a given social context—and both the context and our relating, and consequently our identity, can change.

It is easier to point to ways the Church can change than it is to figure out how to change the way our identities are shaped. But just because it is easier does not mean it is better. I believe efforts like those expressed in a recent blog post of The Brothers Sabey to at least consider the identity end of the tension are worthwhile and even full of love and concern. It would be ironic indeed if these ideas were ignored because the authors were presumed ignorant, or disliked because they were deemed hateful. And I hope that those who agree with the perspective I have expressed here will interact with those of opposing viewpoints with the same kind of generosity of spirit, recognizing that, though we may not always agree on means, we likely share a vision of desired ends—the well-being of our brothers and sisters. Which side of the tension will ultimately provide the best means for reaching that end is yet to be seen.

Not Even at Our Best Are We Near Perfection

Each time I read through the ‘War Chapters’ of the Book of Mormon I am astounded by the letters exchanged between Moroni and Pahoran – both righteous Nephites. Moroni, who valiantly led the Nephite armies in defense of their faith, families, and liberty and Pahoran, the Chief Judge over all the land, entrusted with the responsibility to righteously manage the affairs of government and to oversee the works of Moroni ensuring adequate provisions and manpower were provided.

Both had the same end-goal: to preserve liberty so that the people could worship according to God’s will and live out their lives in peace. Both were challenged in different ways as they strived to fulfill their missions. Interestingly, what provoked the passionate exchange between these two saints was the adversity both were experiencing simultaneously, unknown to the other.

In these dire circumstances, Moroni sent a scathing letter to Pahoran chastising him for not sending adequate support; a sign that he’d turned away from the Lord. Because of this, the Lamanite army had gained significant ground and many God-fearing Nephites had been slaughtered in the process. Moroni felt that no other logical reason made sense than to believe that Pahoran was no longer his brother in Christ and had submitted to desiring power unto himself.

Because this account has a happy ending -- as we find out that Pahoran himself was fending off those trying to overtake the government and not ignoring Moroni at all – it leaves one to wonder why Mormon shared this account in the Book of Mormon? Because, honestly, the story initially doesn’t reflect well on Moroni – the guy so highly esteemed by Mormon. Throughout the ‘War Chapters,’ it mentions multiple times Moroni’s anger toward those who opposed God’s will and, this time, it was directed towards Pahoran’s presumed rebellion. And whether or not Pahoran actions were acceptable or not, I’ve struggled with Moroni’s 'righteous' anger -- was it? It leaves one to wonder if Mormon struggled to share this account because of that fact? I suppose we will never know, but perhaps this key verse about the importance of cleansing the “inner vessel” and its personal application to each of us has something to do with it.

"Do ye suppose that God will look upon you as guiltless while ye sit still and behold these things? Behold I say unto you, Nay. Now I would that ye should remember that God has said that the inward vessel shall be cleansed first, and then shall the outer vessel be cleansed also.” (Alma 60:23)

The reality is that not one of us, even at our best, is near perfect – nor our wonderful leaders. We all need to continually look within, repent and recommit our devotion to God. Constant preparation to withstand the fiery darts of the adversary is an ongoing experience of every disciple of Jesus Christ – Moroni surely understood this in what he witnessed of the saints throughout his life. I am grateful for inspired reminders that God will see each of us through a perfect lens, though not yet perfect, because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, as we strive daily to do what is right.

Recent Policy Change is 'Will of Lord' Says President Nelson

During last night's Worldwide Devotional for Young Adults President Nelson shared how the "prophetic process" to receive revelation works; then shared two recent examples. Of most interest, the policy update to the Handbook that affects same-sex couples and their children.

From the Deseret News report:

“The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles counsel together and share all the Lord has directed us to understand and to feel, individually and collectively,” he said. “And then, we watch the Lord move upon the President of the Church to proclaim the Lord’s will.”

This “prophetic process” — which also includes fasting, prayer, studying, pondering, counseling with each other as they wrestle with the issue — was followed in 2012 with the change in age for missionary service, as well as the recent additions to the Church’s handbook, consequent to the legalization of same-sex marriage in some countries, President Nelson said.

“Filled with compassion for all, and especially for the children, we wrestled at length to understand the Lord’s will in this matter,” he said. “Ever mindful of God’s plan of salvation and of His hope for eternal life for each of His children, we considered countless permutations and combinations of possible scenarios that could arise. We met repeatedly in the temple in fasting and prayer and sought further direction and inspiration.

“And then, when the Lord inspired His prophet, President Thomas S. Monson, to declare the mind of the Lord and the will of the Lord, each of us during that sacred moment felt a spiritual confirmation. It was our privilege as Apostles to sustain what had been revealed to President Monson. Revelation from the Lord to His servants is a sacred process. And so is your privilege of receiving personal revelation.”

Prophet Writes Bold Letter to Unbeliever on Absolute Truth

Hat tip to Daniel Ortner for posting the link to an incredible First Presidency Message published in a 1978 Ensign -- a must share! The message is actually a letter that then president of the Church, Spencer W. Kimball, wrote to a non-believer (John), on the topic of absolute truth. I can't tell for certain, but in the closing remarks President Kimball gives the impression that the person he was writing to was a member of the Church struggling with his faith, who had many questions that deeply concerned the prophet. He also shared that the content of the letter is "to all others who may hear it..." Apparently the reason it was published for the entire Church. Here, I will share excerpts:

"I wrote, some time ago, a letter to a disbeliever. Much of what was said in that letter has been on my mind lately and I wish to share the substance of those thoughts. With that explanation you will better understand the point of view assumed and the style in which it is given. Writing to this young man, who was battling with his thoughts, I said:

Dear John:

Your resistance and argument against the truths of the gospel have given me grave concern.

I realize I cannot convince you against your will, but I know I can help you if you will only listen and let me call to your attention some salient truths, and if you will listen with a prayer and a desire to know that what I say is true. I would not, even if I could, force your thinking, for free agency is the basic law of God and each one must assume the responsibility for his own response; but certainly each of us must do his part in influencing for good those who might need some assistance."

"This true way of life is not a matter of opinion. There are absolute truths and relative truths... There are many ideas advanced to the world that have been changed to meet the needs of the truth as it has been discovered. There are relative truths, and there are also absolute truths which are the same yesterday, today, and forever—never changing. These absolute truths are not altered by the opinions of men. As science has expanded our understanding of the physical world, certain accepted ideas of science have had to be abandoned in the interest of truth. Some of these seeming truths were stoutly maintained for centuries. The sincere searching of science often rests only on the threshold of truth, whereas revealed facts give us certain absolute truths as a beginning point so we may come to understand the nature of man and the purpose of his life."

"We learn about these absolute truths by being taught by the Spirit. These truths are “independent” in their spiritual sphere and are to be discovered spiritually, though they may be confirmed by experience and intellect. (See D&C 93:30.) The great prophet Jacob said that “the Spirit speaketh the truth. … Wherefore, it speaketh of things as they really are, and of things as they really will be.” (Jacob 4:13.) We need to be taught in order to understand life and who we really are.

God, our Heavenly Father—Elohim—lives. That is an absolute truth. All four billion of the children of men on the earth might be ignorant of him and his attributes and his powers, but he still lives. All the people on the earth might deny him and disbelieve, but he lives in spite of them. They may have their own opinions, but he still lives, and his form, powers, and attributes do not change according to men’s opinions. In short, opinion alone has no power in the matter of an absolute truth. He still lives. And Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Almighty, the Creator, the Master of the only true way of life—the gospel of Jesus Christ. The intellectual may rationalize him out of existence and the unbeliever may scoff, but Christ still lives and guides the destinies of his people. That is an absolute truth; there is no gainsaying."

"The Gods organized and gave life to man and placed him on the earth. This is absolute. It cannot be disproved. A million brilliant minds might conjecture otherwise, but it is still true. And having done all this for his Father’s children, the Christ mapped out a plan of life for man—a positive and absolute program whereby man might achieve, accomplish, and overcome and perfect himself. Again, these vital truths are not matters of opinion. If they were, then your opinion would be just as good as mine, or better. But I give you these things, not as my opinion—I give them to you as divine truths which are absolute."

"Some day you will see and feel and understand and perhaps even berate yourself for the long delay and waste of time. It is not a matter of if. It is a matter of when."

"Experience in one field does not automatically create expertise in another field. Expertise in religion comes from personal righteousness and from revelation. The Lord told the Prophet Joseph Smith: “All truth is independent in that sphere in which God has placed it.” (D&C 93:30.) "

"If I can only make clear this one thing, it will give us a basis on which to build. Man cannot discover God or his ways by mere mental processes. One must be governed by the laws which control the realm into which he is delving."

"Any intelligent man may learn what he wants to learn. He may acquire knowledge in any field, though it requires much thought and effort. It takes more than a decade to get a high school diploma; it takes an additional four years for most people to get a college degree; it takes nearly a quarter-century to become a great physician. Why, oh, why do people think they can fathom the most complex spiritual depths without the necessary experimental and laboratory work accompanied by compliance with the laws that govern it? Absurd it is, but you will frequently find popular personalities, who seem never to have lived a single law of God, discoursing in interviews on religion. How ridiculous for such persons to attempt to outline for the world a way of life! "

"One cannot know God nor understand his works or plans unless he follows the laws which govern. The spiritual realm, which is just as absolute as is the physical, cannot be understood by the laws of the physical... You must go to the spiritual laboratory, use the facilities available there, and comply with the governing rules."

"When we were spiritual beings, fully organized and able to think and study and understand with him, our Heavenly Father said to us, in effect: “Now, my beloved children, in your spirit state you have progressed about as far as you can. To continue your development, you need physical bodies. I intend to provide a plan whereby you may continue your growth. As you know, one can grow only by overcoming... An Outsider's Perspective on Mormons and Gay Marriage

This article was written by, Rod Dreher, not of the Mormon faith, and shares some really great insights as to why the majority of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will never accept same-sex marriage and not because we're all a bunch of homophobic bigots -- far from it. Rather, we believe in moral absolutes and to deny what we know to be true about marriage goes against everything we understand about God's plan for His children.

"Again, I cannot comment on Mormon theology, but I am struck by how much this parallels the way orthodox Christianity sees marriage and metaphysics. We too believe that male-female marriage is an icon of God and His creative work, and that it cannot be represented any other way. What’s more, marriage is not simply a representation of divine nature, but also participates in it. In other words, complementary marriage (male-female) is really real, in a way that same-sex marriage cannot be. This is not a legal distinction (because same-sex marriage is a legal reality in many countries now), but a metaphysical one. Though orthodox Christians disagree deeply with Mormons over the nature of God, we share the belief eloquently expressed by Jacob Hess that to discard what the faith teaches about the nature of marriage as a way to participate in theosis, or metaphysical unity with God, is to lose something essential to the faith.

Again, based on what little I know about Mormon theology, the key point to take away here, re: orthodox Christian theology, is that both orthodox Christians and Mormons believe that marriage is not simply the name we give to a specific form of social relationship, but it is also something built into the fabric of reality. As Hess says, you don’t have to believe that story, but if you are going to understand why so many of us on the conservative side of this issue believe as we do, you have to understand that for us, to accept SSM is to deny something we believe is real. And that we cannot do."

Two questions: Why is Donald Trump so popular? And what lesson can we take from this?

To the first: to the low-to-medium-information voter, Donald Trump is everything President Obama is not.

Trump is white; Obama is black.

Trump is outspoken; Obama is scrupulously politically correct.

Trump portrays himself as a war hawk; Obama has spoken as a dove.

Trump claims to oppose Obamacare; Obama championed it.

Trump is Christian and anti-Muslim; Obama, while Christian, is erroneously considered a Muslim by some.

Trump says illegal immigration is causing rape and murder; Obama has striven to provide amnesty for many illegal immigrants

There are more comparisons, but these suffice.

In this context, Trump's fallacies (disparaging Prisoners of War, making crazy remarks, etc.) make more sense. Trump is striving by appearing, to low-to-medium-information voters, to be everything Obama is not. And when these voters have as a goal to get someone who is not Obama in, they are more likely to tolerate or embrace his rhetoric.

This is why Trump's controversial remarks have succeeded: Trump is succeeding because people hate Obama.

Trump's comments are scary. His rhetoric violates the gospel principle of charity, and he has signaled he is open to policies that violate religious freedom. Worse still, precisely because he is an actor—acting as a “not-Obama”—we can have no clue what he will do in office.

But this post is not designed to convince people not to vote for Trump. Instead, the rise of Trump in and of itself illustrates an important lesson we all can take from this: follow the LDS prophets and apostles.

Now, you might be asking yourself: This post began by talking about people who hate Obama being a cause of what led to Trump's popularity. Are you suggesting that following the LDS Apostles includes not cultivating a hate of President Obama like the one some Trump supporters have? That is exactly what I am saying. Let me explain.

Jesus taught us to " Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you." (Matthew 5:44)

I'm not asserting that President Obama is our enemy, or is persecuting anyone (that is beside the point.) I'm suggesting that an application of this doctrine was taught to us at the end of the last election cycle, and if the nation as a whole had followed this application, Trump would not be a leader in the polls right now.

When President Obama beat Mitt Romney in 2012 (despite 78% of the vote of members of the LDS Faith voting for Mr. Romney), the prophets and apostles released a statement that said:

"We invite Americans everywhere, whatever their political persuasion, to pray for the President, for his administration and the new Congress as they lead us through difficult and turbulent times."

It is hard to hate someone you pray for. Very hard.

If the nation had followed the course the prophets had invited us to do, Republicans in our nation would strongly disagree with-- but not hate-- our president. Trump, thus, would not have been able to tap into this anger as he began his campaign.

If the nation as a whole follows the prophets, yes, even big problems like Trump can go away.

Top LDS Church Spokesman Explains Handbook Used by Leaders

The Mormon Newsroom published the following commentary, written by Michael Otterson, Director of Church Public Affairs, to help members and those interested understand the Handbook used by leaders in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

If there’s one thing that virtually all Christians agree on, it’s Jesus Christ’s tender love of children. Both the Bible and Book of Mormon deliver touching accounts of His love for “little ones,” blessing them and forbidding His disciples from keeping children from Him.

In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the family is reverenced and children are its centerpiece. Yet last week an instructional letter from Church leadership addressing the sensitive topic of how to respond to same-sex relationships sparked a wave of inquiries from Church members. Most of the questions were about children.

Because the letter was an instructional document to leadership throughout the world, and not a Church-wide announcement through LDS.org or through Church Public Affairs, there was no additional information or context on the usual Church websites. That prompted questions from many Church members, who were mostly reading media headlines portraying the instructions as a rejection of children and refusal to name babies. Members understandably had specific questions about how the announced change might affect their loved ones.

The episode demonstrates clearly the dangers of drawing conclusions based on incomplete news reports, tweets and Facebook posts without necessary context and accurate information. The Church quickly responded to many of those concerns with a video interview with Elder D. Todd Christofferson, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. By the end of the weekend, that interview had been viewed by millions.

Today, a letter clarifying what the Handbook changes mean and do not mean has been posted on the primary Church website, LDS.org.

One difficulty was a general lack of understanding of the Handbook itself, which is a guide for lay leaders of the church in 30,000 congregations across the world. A purpose of the Handbook is to provide bishops and other leaders with a standard reference point when they make decisions. Because it is a policy and procedural manual, the Handbook is not written in language that is necessarily contextual or explanatory. Church leaders are encouraged to use the Handbook in conjunction with the guidance of the Holy Ghost. Sensitivity to individual circumstances is learned through the Spirit, Christ’s teachings and example as found in the scriptures, from talks and teachings of General Authorities, and from the leaders’ own experience and exposure to real-life situations. No handbook can answer every question or address every circumstance.

Here are the key points to understand as background to the recent changes and additions to the leaders’ Handbook:

It is not a sin simply to feel attraction to another person of the same sex. Some faithful members of the Church experience those attractions yet participate in the Church without breaking the Lord’s commandments. They serve missions and attend the temple. The Church teaches its members to embrace these brothers and sisters and encourage them in their faithful lives in the Church.

There is no change in the doctrinal position that sexual relations between people of the same sex is sinful.

There is new information in the Handbook that addresses a narrow range of situations involving the children of same-sex couples.

With same-sex marriage now legal in the United States and some other nations, the Church felt the need specifically to address such marriages in the Handbook to draw a firm line and encourage consistency among local leaders. In particular, Church leaders are concerned for children–whether biologically born to one of the partners, adopted or medically conceived. In reality, very few same-sex couples would bring children for the formal Church ordinance of naming and blessing, since this creates a formal membership record. But Church leaders want to avoid putting little children in a potential tug-of-war between same-sex couples at home and teachings and activities at church.

This sensitivity to family circumstances is practiced elsewhere. For example, the Church doesn’t baptize minor children without parental consent, even if the children want to be associated with their LDS friends. A married man or woman isn’t baptized if the spouse objects. Missionaries don’t proselytize in most Muslim countries or in Israel, where there are particular sensitivities with family. In some African and other nations where polygamy is practiced, anyone whose parents practice polygamy needs special permission for baptism so they know that a practice that is culturally acceptable for many in the region is not acceptable in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Of course, there are always situations that fall outside general guidelines and principles, which is why local leaders may ask for guidance from more senior leaders in particular cases where they may have questions.

The vast majority of Church members understand that there has been no doctrinal change with regard to LGBT issues. Church doctrine is consistent with the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. There is a strong tendency today for many to talk of Jesus Christ as if His teachings on love were somehow inconsistent with his teachings on divine commandments.

Of course the Savior’s love was never withheld from anyone and His words on the cross exemplify that. But, He also expressed love by teaching clear doctrine and standing firmly against sin with sometimes-tough lessons for which people rejected Him. That is where Church leaders stand today – holding firm to the doctrinal position of right and wrong, while extending love to all people. Church members who believe in modern prophets and apostles understand and appreciate the intent of their leaders to guide the Church through the complexities of diverse societies and rapidly changing social circumstances.

Resist the 'Rainbow Veil' and Let God Be God

I can't begin to tell you how much I love this post, published on the Public Discourse, "Rending the Rainbow Veil: How to Make Your Church a Safe Space for Christians with Same-Sex Attraction", by Jean Lloyd. The familiar cry of Martin Luther King, "I have a dream" has long been my own for gay Mormons who desire with all of their hearts to find a safe space within LDS congregations as they strive to keep covenants.

Considering the current controversy surrounding the recent update to the Church handbook in regard to same-sex couples and their children, now more than ever Mormons must step-up and work harder to show forth love to those most affected. This is our challenge as those claiming to be true disciples of Jesus Christ. We must learn to love better while at the same time stand firm with our doctrine and the inspired counsel and direction of Prophets and Apostles on the topic of homosexual behavior.

"When the Supreme Court redefined marriage and everything from the White House to corporate logos turned rainbow, I recalled that year of monumental personal decision when I was struggling with my relationships with God, women, and myself. I remember digging out my Bible, which was dusty from disuse. I dared to look at the first chapter of Romans. The words blurred through my tears as I read. My mind was also blurry, for having opened a door to sin, I had opened a door to deception. I prayed, “If it’s wrong, You’ll have to show me another way, because I can’t see it.” I honestly couldn’t see the truth—it was as if there was a veil over my eyes.

These days, when I see the multitude of profile pictures on Facebook bearing a rainbow filter, I think of that veil. The rainbow veil tints reality with false hues, blurs the vision, and prevents one from seeing clearly. Proving Ourselves Against Opposition

I’ve really enjoyed studying the Doctrine of Christ this week for my Book of Mormon religion class. The BYU-Idaho Pathway program is changing my life. I seriously feel like I’m living my life backwards and feel so grateful to have this inspired opportunity (because of technology) to seek higher education at this stage of my life.

I’m grateful to know that learning is a life-long endeavor because knowledge is a thing of eternal worth. I will say, however, that this experience is teaching me better what it means to be humble. We are at our most humble when we are teachable – and these days, I am definitely that, as I desire to better understand and know my path going forward.

Which is why, I believe, finding a deeper understanding to the application of the “Doctrine of Christ” was so meaningful to me as I studied, in particular, 2 Nephi Chapter 31 this week.

The Doctrine of Christ is intended to set us on a qualified course, guided by the Holy Ghost, back into the presence of our Heavenly Father. After Nephi had, painstakingly, taught each required step along this path (faith, repentance, baptism, receive HG) he taught us how to proceed from that point forward.

20 Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.

To “press forward” describes the circumstances in which true disciples of Jesus Christ find themselves as they strive to keep sacred covenants in a world contrary to God. To “press forward” in this context then, is to prove oneself in the midst of oncoming opposition. We do this, successfully, as we seek God’s grace through the Atonement. The promise then is that as we continue to “press forward” and feast upon “the word,” continually, we shall obtain “eternal life.”

In other words, once we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost the real “test” begins. We should expect our faith to be challenged, frequently. These opportunities, if you will, become the way to develop greater faith in Jesus Christ as "the way, the truth and the life."

The Doctrine of Christ is the established pattern, and path, by which we may return to the presence of God. As we press daily to "come unto Christ" by following the Spirit, we learn to trust God and his plan for us, personally, and all of his children.

There's no question that we are living during a time of much opposition to eternal truth -- perhaps more so than ever before in the history of the world. Satan is on a rampage! His desire is for us to lose our faith by doubting the truths of the gospel and/or our leaders. Nephi saw our day and understood what it would require for us to stand under such circumstances. He knew what we would be up against, thus his admonition that we must "press forward" with "a perfect brightness of hope and a love of all men"!

Breaking News: Church Provides Official Clarification about Children of Same-Sex Couples

The Mormon Newsroom of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released the following video making important clarifications about the recent handbook updates regarding the children of same-sex couples:

"In a video interview Friday in Salt Lake City, Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reaffirmed the Church’s position on marriage and outlined handbook changes in Church policy affecting same-sex couples and their children. The interview will help Church members, the media and the public better understand the context and purpose of the changes, which have been discussed extensively in the news media, on social media and elsewhere.

The changes were made this week in the Church’s Handbook 1 (a policy and instruction guide for local Church leaders), and were approved by the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The revisions were outlined in a letter that was sent to local Church leaders throughout the world."

Insight into new LDS Church policies on same-sex couples and their children

A guest post by Michael Terence Worley in response to recent news reports that, according to new LDS Church policy children within a same-sex marriage (or household) may not be baptized (or blessed). I expect to hear more from the Church on the matter as clearly this is being blown out of proportion by those critical of the Church. Note: Church Spokesman, Eric Hawkins, has confirmed that this is the policy of the Church.

Update 11/6/15: The Mormon Newsroom has released a video interview with Elder D. Todd Christopherson clarifying the new policy in regard to the children of same-sex couples.

Cue "Bill Nye" voice...

Did you know that, in the LDS Faith, a child cannot get baptized without their parents' approval? A spouse cannot be baptized without their husband's or wife's consent? And, in addition, if the parents practice polygamy, the child cannot get baptized? The church does a TON to protect children and spouses from being taught one thing at home and another thing at church.

Sorry, "Bill Nye" voice again...

Did you know that the LDS Faith is very careful in how it proselytizes Muslims? Even in countries that protect the religious freedom of both Christians and Muslims, there are cultural differences that make it dangerous for Muslims to convert to Christianity.

Each of these boundaries provides protections for the church, the prospective member, and the family.

For the church, it allows them to clearly teach God's plan of Salvation (centered on Jesus Christ and marriage between a man and a woman) without worrying that those they teach will face conflict at home. For the family members of those involved, it allows family autonomy and reduces conflict and secrecy. For the prospective member, it helps them not have to lose vital family relationships (and, if they are under 18, food and shelter).

While Christ does ask us to be prepared to give up family to follow him, (Matthew 10:37), he never teaches that one should attempt to be both a good family member and a good church member if those two are at odds.

Let me explain one more thing before I address the reason I wrote this post, if you'll bear with me. It is not a small matter to become a member of the LDS Church. As I explained above, if an adult Muslim wants to become a member of the church, the church may still decline to baptize the candidate simply because of cultural conflicts. Those who were raised in polygamous households also have extra requirements asked of them if they wish to be baptized. This policy is not a sign of a lack of love, but rather, in the context of the plan of salvation, a recognition that the doctrines and ordinances of Christ are for all in His time, not ours. See Isaiah 55:8-9, Proverbs 3:5-6; Alma 40:8; Moroni 8; Doctrine and Covenants 88:73.

In this context, two policies accurately leaked to the media today-- and, in at least one case, reported sensationally-- make more sense. I (and the media) say two policies, but I will split them into three policies.

The first policy is that choosing to be married to a same-gender partner is incompatible with church membership ("apostasy"). As I mentioned above, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is centered on the value of Christ's atonement to the bond between a husband and a wife and their children. While individuals may experience and act on same-sex attraction without being apostate, the church considers the step of being a party to a same-gender marriage as a sufficient repudiation of the doctrine of the plan of salvation to constitute apostasy.

The second policy, like the ones I began the post with, has the effect of not putting children at the center of a conflict between their household and the teachings of their church. The policy is that any child who is being raised by a same-sex couple may not receive baptism or be blessed as a baby. Like with the policies I mentioned above, it protects not just the child, but the church and the household who is raising the child. Conflicts are inevitable if a child is taught that those the child's legal guardians are sinners-- and the only way for them to stop being sinners is by ending their relationship.

The final policy is that those who are adults and were raised by same-sex couples must meet extra standards before becoming baptized. This, like the policies regarding adults who are/were Muslims and adult children of polygamous parents, serves to protect the candidate. In the context of the plan of salvation, this policy will aim to help people come closer to Christ by helping them be baptized in an environment where they can spiritually grow.

I sustain these policies. Some of my friends may well disagree with these policies. However, I plea with them to not lessen their commitment to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Nothing that happens in this church-- however hard it may seem to be-- changes the fact that God spoke to a 14-year-old boy in 1820. As that boy wrote later in his life:

Brethren, shall we not go on in so great a cause? Go forward and not backward. Courage, brethren; and on, on to the victory! Let your hearts rejoice, and be exceedingly glad.

Even if you disagree wholeheartedly with my church's stance on a few issues, please read the Book of Mormon and pray until the peace and mercy and grace that you need to "go on in so great a cause" comes.

General Conference: Same Message Different Responses

This past week in my BYU-I Pathway religion class, I’ve been focusing on “visualization” while reading the Book of Mormon each day. The way it works is that not only do you try to imagine what you’re actually reading (bring it to life), but you also try to place a similar scenario into modern life (yours).

One of the most beautiful examples of “visualization” I have ever witnessed (probably because I am studying the skill) just happened to be during General Conference this past weekend.

Elder Claudio R. M. Costa taught that one of the ways we can make the Sabbath day more holy is by sharing scripture stories with our children. He said, “I believe that starting a tradition of telling the stories of Jesus to our children and families is a very special way to keep the Sabbath day holy in our homes.” Note that he said, “telling.”

He then explained, “I love to read scriptural passages about His sinless life, and after reading the scriptures which tell about the events experienced by Him, I close my eyes and try to visualize these sacred moments that teach me and strengthen me spiritually.”

The ability to tell a story (own it) indicates a very personal connection to not only the details of a story but its most personal teachings. Which of course, is the reason “visualization” is such a powerful technique for studying the scriptures. Not only do we put ourselves in the story but we then have the power to invite others along, verbally.

Let me share an excerpt from Elder Costa’s General Conference address of how he uses “visualization” while reading the scriptures in preparation to “tell” the stories of Jesus to his own family:

“A few weeks ago, while studying again the message President Russell M. Nelson delivered in the last general conference, and while pondering on the Sabbath day, I felt a deep gratitude for the blessing and privilege of being able to partake of the sacrament. For me that is a very solemn, sacred, and spiritual moment. I greatly enjoy sacrament meeting.

While pondering, I carefully studied the blessings on the bread and the water. I read and deeply meditated on the prayers and the ordinance of the sacrament. I began to go over in my mind and in my heart the events that are connected to it.

In a spirit of meditation, I reflected upon that day, the first day of the feast of the unleavened bread, when Jesus, in response to His disciples’ question about where to prepare for the Passover, answered them, saying, “Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.”

I tried to visualize in my mind the disciples buying food and carefully preparing the table to eat with Him on that special day: a table for 13 people, Him and His twelve disciples, whom He loved.

I cried as I visualized Christ eating with them and declaring, “Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.”

I thought about the saddened disciples asking Him, “Lord, is it I?”

And when Judas asked Him the same question, He replied calmly, “Thou hast said.”

I could visualize hands that had healed, comforted, edified, and blessed, breaking the bread as Jesus said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”

Then He took a cup filled with wine and gave thanks and gave the cup to them, saying, “Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

In my mind I looked at the disciples one by one and saw in their eyes their concern for the Master, whom they loved greatly. It was as if I were sitting there with them, watching everything. I felt an intense pain in my heart, full of grief and sorrow for what He was about to experience for me.

My soul was filled by an overwhelming desire to be a better person. In repentance and sorrow, I fervently wished to be able to dry and avoid the spilling of at least a few drops of His blood shed in Gethsemane.

I then pondered about the sacrament we partake of every week in remembrance of Him. While doing so, I meditated upon each word of the blessings on the bread and the water. I deeply reflected on the words “and always remember him” in the blessing on the bread and “that they do always remember him” in the blessing on the water.

I meditated on what it means to always remember Him.”

Following this sacred sharing of his personal witness of Jesus Christ through “visualization,” he shares what it means to him personally. I hope you’ll read his entire address: That They Do Always Remember Him.

Speaking of General Conference and “likening the scriptures” to our day, I had my own (very unexpected) experience as I was applying the “visualization” technique while reading in 1 Nephi Chapter 15 only days following the conference.

You might recall that Nephi enters the tent of his father Lehi after he had just received a similar vision of what his father had seen. What he came upon was his brothers, Laman, and Lemuel, arguing the merits of what the Lord had revealed to their prophet-father.

3 For he truly spake many great things unto them, which were hard to be understood, save a man should inquire of the Lord; and they being hard in their hearts, therefore they did not look unto the Lord as they ought.

4 And now I, Nephi, was grieved because of the hardness of their hearts, and also, because of the things which I had seen, and knew they must unavoidably come to pass because of the great wickedness of the children of men.

As I visualized this scenario, the thought immediately came to my mind that the exact thing is happening among members of the Church (our brothers and sisters) in how we’ve received the messages and proceedings of General Conference this past weekend.

Among the many inspired teachings we received, I have been astounded (in particular) at the abundance of online conversations, blog posts and media articles focused on examining the call of the three new Apostles to the Quorum of the Twelve. What’s to discuss if we sustain President Thomas S. Monson as a prophet, seer and revelator and President of the Church?

What we learn in the scriptures is that the children of God can have the same experience (hear the same prophetic messages) but by choice choose to receive it differently. We can choose to follow the prophet or debate his words as if they are independent of the Lord's. Heaven knows those called to lead the Church are not perfect, but there’s no question that they have been given priesthood authority to direct the affairs of the kingdom of God on earth.

Lehi was not perfect, but he was called of God to lead his people and received direction from the Lord which they were under covenant to sustain. Like Nephi, we can align our heart and will to the Lord's prophet(s) through personal revelation. Or, like his rebellious brothers, we can be tossed to and fro upon the winds of the Internet.

Lehi: A Great Family Patriarch

For those of you who follow me on my WBMW Facebook Page, you might recall that I shared my decision to participate in the BYU-Idaho Pathway Program this year. I’m happy to report that so far (about two weeks in), it’s been a very positive experience. In my religion course, by assignment, I prayerfully read the Book of Mormon for 30 minutes each day and record personal insights. I also have the opportunity of attending weekly “Gatherings” with other Pathway students in my area to discuss course material where we both teach and learn from each other. I can’t tell you how wonderful it has been to be immersed in the scriptures, once again, similar to when I was teaching seminary a few years ago. I love it!

Now, what I didn’t tell you (because I had no idea) was that as part of the Learning Model used in Pathway we are to find a creative way to teach what we have learned outside of class (I think weekly). Blogging is on the approved list of how to accomplish this assignment. Can you believe that? Now I don’t know if my instructor will allow me to use this platform on a regular basis but I really hope so. I can’t think of anything more awesome than to bring two things I love together (learning the gospel and writing), and by assignment get to share with all of you. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

This week’s reading assignment was 1st Nephi Chapters 1-5:

I’ve read this portion of the Book of Mormon more times than I can count, as I’m sure many of you have. I’ve also studied many commentaries over the years and accessed various online resources for background information, etc. I point that out because I’m sure than some of my insights are drawn from past study. However, I do know that some are completely new and I own them – personal revelation.

In particular, this week, I want to share some insights about, mainly, Lehi (chapter one). How Nephi writes the account of what prompted his father, Lehi, to abruptly take his family into the wilderness leads me to believe that Lehi was not yet a prophet (for the people).

It appears that Lehi went to the Lord (because of a great concern he had for the welfare of his people – I believe his family and friends) to receive a personal confirmation about what “many prophets” at the time were going about prophesying: that Jerusalem was going to be destroyed due to the wickedness of the Jews.

Lehi was clearly one who “followed the prophet(s)” and understood that whatever message they delivered was to be taken seriously -- in this case, a message that was being rejected by most and apparently controversial. And so, he sought personal revelation on behalf of his family.

5 Wherefore it came to pass that my father, Lehi, as he went forth prayed unto the Lord, yea, even with all his heart, in behalf of his people. 6 And it came to pass as he prayed unto the Lord, there came a pillar of fire and dwelt upon a rock before him; and he saw and heard much; and because of the things which he saw and heard he did quake and tremble exceedingly.

Lehi now knew, for himself, that what the prophets’ were testifying was true and would surely come to pass. Note: he was not currently among the prophets warning the people, as he was not yet called as a “Prophet of God."

7 And it came to pass that he returned to his own house at Jerusalem; and he cast himself upon his bed, being overcome with the Spirit and the things which he had seen. 8 And being thus overcome with the Spirit, he was carried away in a vision, even that he saw the heavens open, and he thought he saw God sitting upon his throne, surrounded with numberless concourses of angels in the attitude of singing and praising their God. 9 And it came to pass that he saw One descending out of the midst of heaven, and he beheld that his luster was above that of the sun at noon-day.

The “One” that Lehi saw was the Lord (see vs. 14). Lehi had set before him the entire Plan of Salvation and received a special witness of Jesus Christ, with instructions to call the people to repent and return to God. His call was to echo the same message other prophets of God (at all times) are called to proclaim.

Nephi tells us that as his father was obedient to the Lord, the Jews sought to take his life. Therefore, the Lord instructed Lehi to take his family and flee into the wilderness (out of the world).

There are so many things to learn about faith and obedience, for all of us, in just the first few verses of the Book of Mormon. But what stood out to me, in the account of Lehi being called as a “Prophet of God” was that initially Lehi went to the Lord on behalf of his family and close friends. He took his responsibility as the patriarch of his family seriously and sought revelation for their spiritual and physical welfare.

Though today we are all beneficiaries of Lehi’s prophetic legacy, during his own life as a “Prophet of God” his stewardship (if you will) was to only a handful of family members and close friends. His first calling, as the family patriarch, is what led him to the Lord to inquire about their safety and wellbeing in relation to what prophets of God were preaching. In the Family Proclamation we read:

“By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families.”

Surely, Lehi is among the greatest examples of how this is to be exemplified within the family, as God has ordained. He was first and foremost a prophet unto his own.

One last thought about Lehi... Though he led his family into the wilderness to obtain a "land of promise" (symbolizing the Celestial Kingdom) and experienced many trials throughout his life, he considered it the present:

"But behold, I have obtained a land of promise, in the which things I do rejoice..." (1st Nephi Chpt 5:5)

To Lehi, it appears that the knowledge God provided him (plan of salvation) was/is the "land of promise." Having the gospel in our lives brings immediate blessings and joy. Each one of us who have accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ and made sacred covenants can essentially live daily in the "land of promise" because we can be assured of every blessing the Lord has in store for those who love Him and keep His commandments.

Video: What to Do When Kids See Internet Pornography?

It's not if, but when our children will be exposed to Internet pornography. I think this is a fear that most parents have a great concern about because it's nearly impossible to shield children from everything they may come in contact with online -- as much as we do our best to protect them. So I want to share with you this fantastic video on LDS.org so you and your kids are prepared.

The video does an excellent job of teaching children what to do when they come upon pornography on the Internet. I think this is a great resource for a Family Home Evening to hopefully hit this issue before the fact and arm your family. And if it's already happened, then hopefully this will open a door for discussion.

Three things kids can do, as suggested in the video when they encounter Internet pornography:

Say what it is; it’s pornography!
Turn it off or turn away immediately.
Talk to an adult you trust.

I think this message included in the video is so important to get across to our children:

Just because you saw pornography and just because it made you curious or interested, doesn't mean you're a bad person. Remember that many people love you. Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father love you no matter what.

Church Warns Members About Julie Rowe's "Prepper" Book: A Greater Tomorrow

A concern that I've had for quite sometime is the hyper-interest in prepping for a doomsday scenario by many good members of the Church. One reason for this heightened activity is due to a number of spurious pieces of literature (books) gaining traction as highly credible. What's most disturbing is that these books, and their authors, are often treated as more enlightened than the inspired council of Prophets and Apostles on the topics of emergency preparedness and the Second Coming.

One particular book written by a member of the Church, Julie Rowe, has caught the attention of the CES Department of the Church (those who oversee LDS Seminary and Institute programs) and because of its growing influence among these so-called "Prepper" Mormons (I believe), a need to make a bold statement about its credibility has become necessary. This caution has been issued to all seminary and institute personnel throughout the Church:

Publication Caution: A Greater Tomorrow: My Journey Beyond the Veil Additional Information: [August 31, 2015] In 2014, Spring Creek Book Company published A Greater Tomorrow: My Journey Beyond the Veil by Julie Rowe (see shaded box for Amazon’s description of the book). Although Sister Rowe is an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, her book is not endorsed by the Church and should not be recommended to students or used as a resource in teaching them. The experiences she shares are her own personal experiences and do not necessarily reflect Church doctrine or they may distort Church doctrine.

Bottom line, the book "A Greater Tomorrow: My Journey Beyond the Veil" by Julie Rowe is considered by the Church "spurious materials in circulation" and likely should be avoided.

My hope in sharing this information is that members will be alerted to the interesting tactics among our own to market emergency preparedness items using the elements of having received greater light and/or that of fear. Rowe's book is not the only one circulating among members being given, for some, a higher status than the brethren. No one in the Church has greater access to revelation through the Spirit than another who maintains the keeping of same covenants. And no one, besides the Prophet of the Lord whom we sustain as a seer and revelator, and President of the Church, is authorized to receive revelation for the entire Church. Our safety remains in understanding the principle of revelation, not only personally but how this works in the Church.

I'd like to place before you an excellent presentation from the recent FAIR Mormon Conference on this topic, by Cassandra Hedelious (a personal friend) entitled: A house of order, a house of God: Recycled challenges to the legitimacy of the church. It's powerful and goes straight to the heart of the concerns I have mentioned in this post and a few others. Understanding the sensitivity of this topic (as do I) she begins her presentation with this introduction:

Apologetics is a very broad field and different topics can involve extremely different audiences. My topic today is a little delicate, because the audience I hope to reach is a certain group of members of the church, good and faithful and well-meaning members, who believe in God, believe in Joseph Smith’s calling as a prophet, and have no problem with most of the doctrines and truth claims of the Restoration. You may now wonder why on earth I’m even up here. The unfortunate reality is that even for such a faithful person, there’s still the possibility of spiritual danger. One particular spiritual threat is gaining strength among some church members, particularly via the internet. What we’re seeing is a modern spin on an old song–that the church has lost its way, church leaders are not inspired or in favor with God, so God has raised up new leaders outside the church hierarchy whose visions and teachings are important for us to follow. It is likely you know someone who finds this narrative persuasive, or at least intriguing, even if you don’t know that they do. It is also possible that you and I have some seemingly harmless beliefs that can lead to this danger.

Mormon Newsroom: Church Responds to Inquiries About Preparedness

(September 26, 2015) In response to several news media inquiries, the Church recently issued the following statement:

The Church encourages our members to be spiritually and physically prepared for life's ups and downs. For many decades, Church leaders have counseled members that, where possible, they should gradually build a supply of food, water and financial resources to ensure they are self-reliant during disasters and the normal hardships that are part of life, including illness, injury or unemployment.

This teaching to be self-reliant has been accompanied by the counsel of Church leaders to avoid being caught up in extreme efforts to anticipate catastrophic events.

The writings and speculations of individual Church members, some of which have gained currency recently, should be considered as personal accounts or positions that do not reflect Church doctrine.

Legalizing Assisted Suicide: Where does LDS Church Stand?

Today in my home state, "The California Assembly approved legislation that would allow terminally ill patients to legally end their lives, sending the proposal to the state Senate that is expected to endorse it" as reported by the Associated Press. The idea of assisted suicide just sickens me. Apparently lawmakers voted 42-33 after concluding what is said to have been a "lengthy and emotional debate" where many "invoked their religious faith in arguing for and against the legislation."

You may recall the Brittany Maynard case that brought the issue to the forefront of mainstream America. Maynard, a California resident, had terminal cancer. Before taking her own life, she spent her last days advocating for the legalization of assisted suicide, or the right-to-die. She held that she was forced to move to Oregon (no choice) where she could legally take her life. She believed that she had that right and so should you. So much so, that the legacy of her short life is that government is greater than God.

On so many levels, the issue of legalizing assisted suicide is morally wrong. Just wrong. Because I firmly believe this, comments left on this post advocating for assisted suicide will not be published. Rather, I share this information to make sure that my fellow Mormons know exactly where The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) stands on the issue of euthanasia.

Twenty years ago this month, the LDS Church issued an inspired document "The Family: A Proclamation to the World." Within that inspired declaration, crafted by the First Presidency of the Church and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is a powerful statement which addresses this issue:

“We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God’s eternal plan.”

Life is sacred, from conception to death because our time here in mortality, both comings, and goings is part of God's eternal plan for each of His children. Birth and death are natural phenomenons of the mortal experience creating a portal through eternity.

Because the issue of euthanasia and prolonging life is of great moral concern to the Church, they have posted this official statement on the Mormon Newsroom:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes in the sanctity of human life, and is therefore opposed to euthanasia. Euthanasia is defined as deliberately putting to death a person who is suffering from an incurable condition or disease. Such a deliberate act ends life immediately through, for example, frequently-termed assisted suicide. Ending a life in such a manner is a violation of the commandments of God.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not believe that allowing a person to die from natural causes by removing a patient from artificial means of life support, as in the case of a long-term illness, falls within the definition of euthanasia. When dying from such an illness or an accident becomes inevitable, it should be seen as a blessing and a purposeful part of eternal existence. Members should not feel obligated to extend mortal life by means that are unreasonable. These judgments are best made by family members after receiving wise and competent medical advice and seeking divine guidance through fasting and prayer.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; . . .

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; . . .

[A] time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; . . .

[A] time to keep silence, and a time to speak. [Ecclesiastes 3:1–2, 4–5, 7]

Addiction Recovery: Mormon Channel "12 Steps to Change" New Video Series

The path of addiction is predicated upon the excessive and abusive participation in such activities as pornography, sex, alcohol, gambling, drug use, etc. Serious addiction is on the rise due to, among other things, the Internet making access readily available to things that in the past required more effort to experience or acquire. Living a double life is as easy as creating a virtual persona and/or engaging in addictive behavior when alone.

One of the most devastating aspects of addiction is that those affected are led to believe that there is no hope to course correct their lives and find favor with God and loved ones once again. But that assumption could not be further from the truth. The truth is, the Atonement of Jesus Christ is the answer – not the thing to run and hide from in shame.

Elder David A. Bednar shared this powerful testimony on his Facebook page:

“I declare my witness of the living reality of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I love and revere Him. His power and peace are real. His Atonement has the power to cleanse, heal, guide, protect, and strengthen us.

I invite you to study, pray, ponder, and strive to learn more about the Savior’s Atonement. The unique challenges in each of our lives are designed to help us rely upon the merits, mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah.

I testify and promise He will help us bear up our burdens with ease.”

I believe.

Often, family members and those closest to people suffering a serious addiction don’t know how to help. Denial is often the easiest course of action believing that to intervene would be to risk the relationship. Nevertheless, I believe we can offer them hope -- not a simple commodity.

Hope is the key to change and sets before us a way to choose a new, positive way of life. Hope enables the desire to exercise agency to choose something better. Hopes creates desire. Hope is the great catalyst to change!

We can give hope to those suffering from addiction. That hope, if they choose it, can heal them from the inside out. Willpower will never be enough to overcome serious addiction. All need God’s grace if we are to be successful in this life and meet the measure of our creation, which is to become like our Savior. Every one of us falls short of the glory of God and have need of the sanctifying power of the Atonement. Addiction is one challenge and one that can be managed.

September 1st, in conjunction with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Addiction Recovery Program and in support of National Addiction Recovery Month, the Mormon Channel will release a series of 12, original videos to support those going through the process of addiction recovery titled: 12 Steps to Change.

In support of National Addiction Recovery Month, Mormon Channel, the media channel for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is releasing an original video series highlighting the real struggles and triumphs of people working to overcome addiction.

Each video in the series focuses on one person’s experience with one of the 12 steps in the addiction recovery program. Titled “12 Steps to Change,” the series features a combination of raw interviews mixed with dramatic reenactments. Recovering addicts are given the opportunity to share their stories in their own words, as they overcome addictions to drugs, alcohol, food, sex, and pornography.

The videos are the centerpiece of a larger campaign to increase awareness of the help that can be found through the addiction recovery program and encourage honest conversation about a subject that many feel reluctant to address. A Mother's Inspired Plea Outside Abortion Clinic: Let US Adopt Your Baby!

We've all been either observing or engaging in a conversation recently about abortion. Planned Parenthood is on the hot seat because of horrific videos being released that for me are too difficult to watch let alone discuss (and rightfully so). The reality of abortion and the heinous acts by those involved is something akin to murder right before our eyes -- a reality most find hard to believe and so we don't. Not only hard to believe, but because of the global norm of it all, utterly helpless to make it stop! But not today, not this woman...

Allison Hansen Mackay posted these powerful photos (publicly) on her Facebook wall with this message and a call to stand with her:

Responding to a comment on the photo from another women who said that adoption is her and her husband's only answer to ever have a baby, Allison shared these thoughts:

"There are thousands of parents aching for a baby and sometimes women who find themselves at a clinic like that just don't see another REAL option..."

LDS Church to Hang in With Scouting Program for Now

In an unexpected turn of events, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) announced that they will continue (for now) their ongoing relationship with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The Mormon Newsroom released the following statement on behalf of the Council of the First Presidency and The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints appreciates the positive contributions Scouting has made over the years to thousands of its young men and boys and to thousands of other youth. As leaders of the Church, we want the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to succeed in its historic mission to instill leadership skills and high moral standards in youth of all faiths and circumstances, thereby equipping them for greater success in life and valuable service to their country.

In the resolution adopted on July 27, 2015, and in subsequent verbal assurances to us, BSA has reiterated that it expects those who sponsor Scouting units (such as the Church) to appoint Scout leaders according to their religious and moral values “in word and deed and who will best inculcate the organization’s values through the Scouting program.” At this time, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will go forward as a chartering organization of BSA, and as in the past, will appoint Scout leaders and volunteers who uphold and exemplify Church doctrine, values, and standards.

With equal concern for the substantial number of youth who live outside the United States and Canada, the Church will continue to evaluate and refine program options that better meet its global needs.

There seems to be an initial, broad consensus from members online that "it's only a matter of time" before the LDS Church will need to part ways with BSA. Some expressing disappointment in the decision to remain affiliated considering the new policy to allow openly gay leaders to participate in the program. Others share a concern that the Church will soon find itself knee-deep in laws suits to defend the principle of Religious Freedom in order to maintain its right to uphold the standards of the Church in appointing BSA leaders within the faith.

The particular sentence within the above statement that seems to give members the feeling that the Church is still in a holding pattern, of sorts, and will continue to monitor the situation is this one:

"At this time, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will go forward as a chartering organization of BSA, and as in the past, will appoint Scout leaders and volunteers who uphold and exemplify Church doctrine, values, and standards."

In other words, only time will tell the future of the Church's ongoing relationship with the Boy Scouts of America. But for now, no knee-jerk reaction to throw in the towel. Rather, we forge ahead and "come what may" seek for the good.

Update: The thought that came to my mind (feeling that the Church knows it will end up in court) is that it wants the opportunity to defend Religious Freedom. No doubt, this inevitably would be high profile and really test the waters of where society is on the issue. That, and the fact that BSA is entrenched in Mormon culture/tradition and there would likely be some strong kickback. Timing is everything and with so much on the line, I just don't think its time, yet. I think time and experience going forward will develop the unity necessary to move on.

LDS Female Leaders Invited to Serve on Key Priesthood Councils at Highest Level of Church

Sister Bonnie L. Oscarson, who currently serves as the general Young Women's president made this stunning announcement this evening via a Facebook page status update. This historic news will affect the women of the Church's visibility, value and voice within the highest councils of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (Mormon)

I still vividly remember President Thomas S. Monson announcing the lowered missionary age for young women. Today I witnessed another significant moment – I received an invitation to participate as a member of the Missionary Executive Council. I am honored. This is one of three key councils of the Church, each led by members of the Twelve. Sister Linda Burton will now serve on the Priesthood and Family Executive Council and Sister Rosemary Wixom will be on the Temple and Family History Executive Council.

What a great time to be a woman in the Church where our voices are needed and valued more than ever. I am grateful for the opportunity to add my perspective and experience to this council as we work together to spread the message of the restored Gospel.

The LDS Church has added women to three important committees, a historic development that gives women significant, permanent, official voice in church leadership.

Church leaders changed the name of the faith's Priesthood Executive Council to the Priesthood and Family Executive Council and invited the church's Relief Society General President, Sister Linda K. Burton, to sit on the council.

The General Young Women President, Sister Bonnie L. Oscarson, will join the Missionary Executive Council.

The General Primary President, Sister Rosemary Wixom, will be on the Temple and Family History Executive Council.

Here is what Linda K. Burton, who serves as the general Relief Society president, has to say about this historic event in Church history -- on her Facebook page, too! These ladies really know how to use social media to spread the good news!

It is with a thankful heart that I have been appointed to serve on the Priesthood and Family Executive Council. Good men and women of the Church throughout history have worked together to build a strong foundation for Christ’s restored Gospel to flourish and give hope to a world that is so often without light. It is now more important than ever that we stand together and follow Heavenly Father’s plan to bring his children home.

Elder Dallin H. Oaks shared Sister Oscarson's Facebook status update on his Facebook page and included these supportive comments:

I was very pleased to read Sister Bonnie Oscarson’s Facebook post about the new assignments of our women officers to the three general priesthood councils. We need their wisdom and participation! It is sensible that their assignments line up with their current responsibilities.

Sister Oscarson will serve on the Missionary Executive Council at a time when the Church has an unprecedented number of missionaries, a great number of whom are young women. Sister Wixom’s appointment to the Temple and Family History Executive Council will help us teach our young people to learn about their ancestors.

I was also very pleased to learn that the First Presidency has approved renaming the Priesthood Executive Council to the “Priesthood and Family Executive Council.” We know Sister Burton will give valuable insight in this new position as she represents women of the Church around the world.

Primary children sing “I Love To See The Temple.” Some children even research family names and index. They love to listen to stories about the temple and their own ancestors. It gives them a sense of belonging and reinforces in their hearts the goal to remain steadfast in the gospel and attend the temple one day. I know that the truths we teach our children are those that remain in their hearts as adults, which is why I consider it a special privilege to now serve on the Temple and Family History Executive Council.

The Mormon Newsroom stated that these assignments are effective immediately.

“We are confident that the wisdom and judgment of these general auxiliary presidents will provide a valuable dimension to the important work accomplished by these councils,” said a letter to general authorities and general auxiliary presidencies from Church President Thomas S. Monson; President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency; and President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency.

The Seer Stone: Faithful Membership NOT for Faint of Heart

“The” Seer Stone, seriously? What are they thinking? "They," meaning The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (Mormon) When I first saw that headline come through my newsfeed on Facebook, I thought surely this is a prank. But no, it's full on real and posted about on the Mormon Newsroom in conjunction with the release of the printer's manuscript of the Book of Mormon -- leaving one to ponder why, seemingly, so many faith hurdles are being cast before the membership of the Church these days?

"An accompanying article on the history of the Book of Mormon translation will appear in the October 2015 issue of the Church’s Ensign magazine, and is now available online. Both the introduction to the new volume and the magazine article discuss the instruments Joseph Smith used to translate, and both include never-before-seen photographs of a seer stone Joseph Smith likely used in the translation of the Book of Mormon.

The stone he used in the translation was often referred to as a chocolate-colored stone with an oval shape. The stone was passed from Joseph Smith to scribe Oliver Cowdery and then from Cowdery’s widow, Elizabeth Whitmer Cowdery, to Phineas Young. Young then passed it on to his brother, Brigham Young, the second president of the Church. After President Young died, one of his wives, Zina D. H. Young, donated it to the Church. In addition to this seer stone, historical records indicate that Joseph Smith owned other seer stones during his lifetime." (MNR)

It appears that faithful membership in the Lord’s Church, going forward, is not to be for the faint of heart. (Not that it ever was, really.) Faith, being the key element and the necessary principle of the gospel to be applied when we are faced with anything that at first glance challenges our faith or seems odd. This type of test is reminiscent of the early days of the Church and what members were called to endure and act upon.

Today, what we are invited to act upon is not necessarily the giving up of previous beliefs, material possessions or heading west, etc. Rather, we are asked to stand for what we believe regardless of the onslaught of challenges to our testimony that the gospel of Jesus Christ is indeed true – Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon and all! And we are to do this in the face of much ridicule both from within and outside of the Church.

Contained in scripture, there are numerous references to the eventual Restoration of the Church being "a marvelous work and a wonder." Through the words of Isaiah, the prophet Nephi reiterates this prophecy (note the conditions of the day that would prevail):

25 Forasmuch as this people draw near unto me with their mouth, and with their lips do honor me, but have removed their hearts far from me, and their fear towards me is taught by the precepts of men—

26 Therefore, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, yea, a marvelous work and a wonder, for the wisdom of their wise and learned shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent shall be hid.

The Doctrine and Covenants section 1 contains the preface to the work and proclaims in verses 12-17 virtually the same:

12 Prepare ye, prepare ye for that which is to come, for the Lord is nigh;

13 And the anger of the Lord is kindled, and his sword is bathed in heaven, and it shall fall upon the inhabitants of the earth.

14 And the arm of the Lord shall be revealed; and the day cometh that they who will not hear the voice of the Lord, neither the voice of his servants, neither give heed to the words of the prophets and apostles, shall be cut off from among the people;

15 For they have strayed from mine ordinances, and have broken mine everlasting covenant;

16 They seek not the Lord to establish his righteousness, but every man walketh in his own way, and after the image of his own god, whose image is in the likeness of the world, and whose substance is that of an idol, which waxeth old and shall perish in Babylon, even Babylon the great, which shall fall.

17 Wherefore, I the Lord, knowing the calamity which should come upon the inhabitants of the earth, called upon my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and spake unto him from heaven, and gave him commandments;

I would say that the Seer Stone falls into both categories. God's ways are not man's ways and certainly, it is a thing to "wonder" that He would possibly use a rock to assist in the translation of the Book of Mormon, in the face of knowing ridicule. Clearly the Lord knew that some would stumble on such small a matter (pun intended). With this in mind, we need to consider that whatever the Lord allows is intended to make "weak things" strong. In Ether 12, the Lord teaches us:

27 And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.

Not only that the Restoration of the Church came about under such circumstances but also, how it came about are deeply significant. And I would venture to say that this state of “a marvelous work and a wonder” is ongoing.

Perhaps we need to ponder deeply then, what "weakness" in the above context could actually mean. What if we replaced the word "weakness" with "faith"? Meaning, it could be in our recognition that faith is a principle of action in our lives we must also learn that faith is an ability (or power) to be increased and ultimately perfected.

Which leads me to the next question: Is my faith weak? Or rather, from a recent General Conference address by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf who begs the question: “Lord, Is It I?”

“In these simple words, “Lord, is it I?” lies the beginning of wisdom and the pathway to personal conversion and lasting change.”

Meaning, how strong is my faith and does it need shoring up? Apparently it does. Not one of us is exempt from the fiery darts of the adversary to undermine our faith in Jesus Christ and that this is His work. Oh, how Satan would love to cause us to stumble over things like seer stones, marriage, gender identity, polygamy, etc. And sadly, he’s having encouraging success with some closest to us.

Another question things of late cause me to ask: Is faith an endurance exercise? After all, we are encouraged to “endure to the end.” What does that mean? I think it means that under all circumstances we keep our covenants. I think it means that the Lord expects us to remain faithful even when we have doubts and questions. But faithful to what? Surely not faithful to our doubts and questions, but rather faithful to what we do know, and have developed our testimony upon, in the face of some doubts and questions. And, I think it means that perhaps the Lord greatly desires our loyalty so that He might show Himself unto to us by faith.

The marvelous thing about gaining a testimony of Jesus Christ and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is His Church here upon the earth today is in how we obtain that testimony – it can be stellar because properly obtained it comes not of man but from God Himself. Gaining a testimony in the way God has provided is the key to not only gaining a personal testimony of Jesus Christ, but also that the Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion – whether it and/or we stand or fall it is the same. And it is only by the grace of God that we can stand if we will seek to keep sacred covenants with Him.

The point is, we know the Church will stand until the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Will we?

Kathie Lee Gifford Bears Witness of Jesus Christ on Today Show

Kathie Lee Gifford took a priceless opportunity to bear witness of Jesus Christ by way of a very touching tribute to her husband Frank, who recently passed away. I'm not one to say much publicly about TV personalities, but I've decided to make an exception in this case.

I don't watch the Today Show but as a young mother, I did watch her on the Regis and Kathie Lee Show and came to respect her for her openly religious faith as a Christian woman. Even then, it was a rarity to see such a display. This for me makes her very faith-based and heartfelt thoughts about her late husband today even more extraordinary and very appreciated.

Included in her remarks, was an invitation to all to come unto Christ. How beautiful when someone of her public stature uses the media to stand for Jesus Christ and how living the gospel has blessed their lives.

I hope Kathie Lee's example and testimony is inspiring to many and my reason for sharing it with you. May the Lord bless her and her family at this difficult time.

Once I Was A Beehive Movie: Go See It

I didn't expect to like the movie Once I Was A Beehive and likely would not have made an effort to see it. So, I am happy that someone in the know thought to send me a link so that I could prescreen the movie from the comfort of my own home (with hopes, of course, that I would tell you about it.)

That link sat in my message box for quite sometime, as I personally had little interest in seeing the movie even for free. I didn't have the time for such silliness I thought. Until one night a few weeks ago when I had three of my granddaughters over for a sleepover and needed to figure out ways to entertain them…

I announced that I had a secret link to a super cool Mormon movie that wasn't even in the theaters yet – for girls! That didn't impress them. I then insisted that they would like it and got things set up so that I could stream it on the “big screen” via Apple TV. I love torturing my grandkids!

It didn't take long before they were completely engaged in watching Once I Was A Beehive – me too!

Yes, it was totally corny. Yes, it was major stereotyping of Mormons and what our girls camp are like (although pretty close). And yes, as a former, two-time Young Women’s President and mother of three daughters it totally hit home and brought tears to my eyes.

This past Sunday those same granddaughters came over for dinner. Guess what they begged me to watch? You guessed it, their now favorite movie!

Go see it! It opens in select theaters August 14^th. I promise, this is one silly Mormon movie that will wiggle its way into your heart. We can’t wait until it comes out on DVD – it’s a winner!
