What is Surface Design?

Surface design is the art of creating designs, patterns, and textures that are used to decorate surfaces of all kinds. If you've ever shopped for fabric, wallpaper, or gift wrap, then you've come across the work of a surface designer. Surface designers use a variety of methods to create their designs, including drawing, painting, digital illustration, and photography.

Being an artist is a full-time job - but if you're also running your own art business and design studio, it can feel like you're working 24/7. From creating art, designing products, collaborating with clients, to marketing your work, keeping up with social media, and managing finances, there's a lot to juggle!

Here are 10 tips to help you run a successful art business.

1. Set realistic goals and targets. What do you want to achieve in the next year? In the next 5 years? Write down your goals and review them regularly to make sure you're on track.

2. Get organized and stay on top of deadlines. Create a system that works for you to manage your time and keep track of deadlines for shows, submissions, orders, etc. A bullet journal or digital calendar can be helpful for this. I personally like to write things down on paper.

3. Create a budget and stick to it. Knowing how much money you have coming in and going out is crucial for any business - make sure you're tracking your finances and sticking to a budget.

4. Invest in good quality materials. Cheap materials might be tempting, but they won't do your work any favours in the long run. Invest in good quality supplies that will last.

5. Promote, promote, promote! Make sure people know about your work - whether that's through social media, word of mouth, or exhibiting in galleries or shows. Find what works best for you and where your target audience is hanging out online or offline. I have started to be more proactive in promoting myself and showing some of my design process and behind the scenes inspiration.

6. Don't be afraid to say no. You can't do everything - so if someone asks you to do something that doesn't fit with your goals or plans, it's okay to say no. Protect your time and energy so you can focus on what's important to you and your business. The past couple of years I have had to say no to quite a few opportunities as I was fully booked and overworked. I did feel bad about not being able to work with everyone who had contacted me, so now I only take on client work and collaborations several times a year.

7. Take care of yourself. Running a business can be stressful - make sure you're taking care of yourself both mentally and physically. Schedule time for breaks, exercise, relaxation, and fun!

8. Believe in yourself and your work. It sounds cheesy but it's true - if you don't believe in yourself, no one else will either! Trust your instincts and don't second-guess yourself too much - at the end of the day, only you know what's best for your business (and art).

9. Get professional help when you need it. We all need help sometimes - whether it's with accounting, taxes, legal issues, website design, or anything else related to running a business. Don't be afraid to reach out for help when you need it so you can focus on what you do best - creating art!

10 . Surround yourself with positive people : family , friends , other artists , mentors , etc . These people will provide support, advice, positive reinforcement, and honest feedback when needed. Choosing wisely who we take advice from is just as important as asking for it. Look for qualified experts whose opinions we respect, who have our best interest at heart, and who will give us an honest assessment – even if it’s not what we wanted to hear initially.

If we want to be successful in running our art businesses, we have to remember these 10 things : set realistic goals, get organized & stay on top of deadlines, create & stick to a budget, invest in good quality materials, promote our work constantly, learn how & when to say no, take care of ourselves physically & mentally and most importantly, surround ourselves with positive people & professionals who will help guide us along the way !

Infloresence

I am super excited to share with you the release of my 3rd quilt fabric collection for Spotlight.

This collection is called “Infloresence” and consists of 7 designs with two distinct styles. There are 3 designs with hand painted irises, lilies, pansies and orchids and ther are 4 designs with modern illustrated Rosella birds in amongst stylised Australian native flowers. The combination of styles makes for a really diverse collection and endless possibilities to mix and match.

The vibrant colour palette that I have used for these fabrics makes it easy to co-ordinate with each print and also be balanced out the the multi-colour geometric textural print.

Rosella Paradise

There are 2 designs in this collection with Australian Rosella birds set in amongst stylised proteas, banksias and other bush flora. When I was thinking of a name to call this fabric design I couldn’t go past the name Rosella Paradise, because they truely look like they are living in a wonderful garden paradise.

Rosella Paradise comes in 2 different sizes and also with two different colour backgrounds. All these designs are printed on 112 cm wide 100% cotton fabric. These fabrics are a great addition to quilting and patchwork projects, or for making items such as book bags, scrunchies, pencil cases, tote bags and other soft bags!

Modern Botanical Fabrics

These fabrics are part of my “A Painted Garden” fabric collection that is available exclusively to Spotlight stores in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia. The designs are printed onto a beautiful light weight silky smooth 100% cotton satin that is 150cm wide.

I hand painted the artwork for these designs and the colours of the final printed fabrics is not only amasing it matches my original paintings.

These fabrics have a luxurious look and feel and are silky in texture with a wonderful drape, making them perfect for dresses, blouses and skirts.

The new collection of 7 designs has a strong Australiana theme with proteas, flowering gum blossoms, eucalyptus leaves and sugar bush flowers.

I am really excited to let you know that I have just launched my new scarf collection

There are 6 designs in this collection with my some of my favourite original painitngs and hand painted designs. The scarves are printed on a beautiful lightweight cotton silk fabric blend. Viola Quilt Fabric Collection 

The inspiration behind this collection was the childhood memories of my grand parents garden. They had rows of garden beds filled with different flowers and bulbs that came into bloom at different times of the year. There were dahlias, cosmos, chrysanthemums, irises, lilies, daisies, ranunculus and violets to name a few. In front of the garden beds was a row of crepe myrtle trees and rows of roses and the back yard was filled with fruit trees and vegetables.

What Is Your Design Process?

When I start a new design collection it is usually from being inspired by photos I have taken of flowers. Once I have chosen a few images I then set up a private board on Pinterest and I pin these images plus additional photos to reference colours, textures, current trends and anything else that can be used for inspiration.  I then start by drawing some rough sketches on paper to capture the look and feel for the design and motifs.

When I have enough, I usually draw way more than I use, I scan the drawings and I start to digitize them in either Adobe Illustrator or on my IPad Pro depending on the look I want for the collection. Then it is time to add colour because I usually work entirely in black and white  until I have completed all the motifs and icons I think I will need for the collection. After I am happy with the colours it is time do to the layout and build the repeat pattern. If it is vector art I will use Adobe Illustrator for this and Photoshop for any painted  work.
 

The main hero pattern will shape the look and feel of the collection and it will dictate what other coordinating designs are needed to round out the collection. Sometimes I will design a placement illustration first and then work on repeat patterns. If I am designing for a particular product or market area I will keep in mind the scale, size, complexity and density of the repeat as well as the type of the repeat that would be appropriate.  

I also like to mix up my process, mediums and tools, so I will switch between drawing, working digitally and painting.  Taking breaks from being behind the computer and working more traditionally is not only good to give my eyes a break from the screen but is also very freeing and it allows me to experiment and just  to create without any set plan. This is when I make those happy mistakes and have those ah ha moments!

A love a good sketchbook with smooth pages, markers and pens in various sizes, gouache paints, Posca paint pens, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Draw, Photoshop and now my iPad Pro.  It literally took me half a year to get used to drawing on it and at the beginning I felt like I was skating on ice!

I like to try and keep a routine as it helps me to achieve more by being disciplined with balancing my business, daily chores and family life.

At the start of each week I set myself a weekly to do list as a target to work towards filled with things I want to achieve or need to complete during the week. This list is often quite large and sometimes is a bit too ambitious, but it keeps me on track and makes me accountable!
 
The beginning of each day is always the same and really regimented and always involves a coffee first thing in the morning whilst I check my emails and social media accounts, followed by some light household duties to get them out of the way and I if I am not too busy I like to go for a morning walk.  

Next I select 3 - 5 tasks from my weekly to do list  that I plan on completing that day, this way my weekly list is broken down into smaller more manageable chunks and is not too daunting. 
I like to start the week by dealing with all the non-artistic business related things such as accounts, admin and planning, to get them out of the way early in the week and off my mind. This then leaves me feeling more refreshed, motivated and free to create and work on my illustrations and designs for the rest of the week.

I am a bit of a night owl so I do a lot of my initial sketches and drawing at night when I have the house to myself and then the next day I will work on final artwork and repeat pattern collections. 

Some days and weeks do not always go as I had planned and I  juggle my design work in between running a business with my husband  so I try to make sure I have at least one day a week where I do not do any work and I am away from the computer.

I have always had a love for fabrics, fashion and textiles since my early childhood and when I was growing up I wanted to be either a ballerina or fashion designer! 

I was always artistic and enjoyed making things and I had to fit this in between my hectic schedule of learning ballet 6 days a week before and after school. I really enjoyed pottery, sculpture, drawing, painting, copper art and even macramé and string art! I learned how to sew, knit, crotchet, do tapestry and embroidery from my mother and grandmother when I was young and I remember designing and sewing my first outfit when I was 9 years old. 

Since the mid 80’s I have been designing jewellery for our business and managing the admin, accounts and website and once my children were older I began to look for other things to do as an interest outside of running our business. My daughter, who had finished school, was now studying fashion design and she told me about a course I might like to study - Textile Design and Fabric Printing.  I had to produce a portfolio with drawings, painted artwork and designs for the application and I was really scared because this was something I had never done before! I waited anxiously for 8 weeks to see if I would be accepted into the course and had almost given up hope but then the letter came to say that I was accepted into the course 😃 

During this full time year of study I learned about Surface Pattern Design and I decided that this was what I wanted to do. Six years later and after taking numerous other courses I have worked to create an extensive portfolio of designs and illustration art which I exhibited in New York at Blueprint, an independent Illustration and Print Show.
