So when I started looking at how Google AI Overviews behave on plain brand name searches, like “wikipedia” or “adobe”, I pulled up a stack of them side by side.

The pattern isn’t as uniform as I expected.

Top of page for some brands

Search “wikipedia” and the AI Overview sits right near the top, just under the usual organic listings, summarizing what Wikipedia is, who founded it, and how large it’s grown. Search “adobe” and you get the same placement, with an overview covering Creative Cloud and Document Cloud.

Mid-page for others

Scroll through searches like “reddit,” “amazon,” “samsung,” “motorola,” “yahoo,” “apple,” and “poland spring,” and the AI Overview often sits further down the page, sometimes well below the fold. The content is similar in style, a short description plus a few bulleted highlights, but you have to scroll to find it.

Why this matters for brand searches

If you’re tracking how your own brand appears in Google’s AI Overview, position matters as much as presence. A brand overview at the top gets seen by nearly everyone who searches the name. One lower down the page competes with other results for attention, and some searchers may never scroll that far.

This also means a brand showing up in an AI Overview at all isn’t a reliable signal of the position. Worth checking both separately before you draw conclusions about your own visibility.

I’ve been in this industry since 2006, and the small quirks in Google Ads interfaces still get my attention. They usually tell you something about how the platform wants you to work. Here’s a good one: you can’t edit your Target ROAS while promotion mode is active.

What Google Ads actually says

Try to change your Target ROAS during promotion mode and Google stops you with a notice: “You can’t edit your Target ROAS while promotion mode is active.” It doesn’t leave you stuck, though. It points you to a different setting, the ROAS tolerance, and lets you edit that instead.

So the Target ROAS number is frozen for the duration of the promotion, and the tolerance is the lever Google leaves open to you.

Who spotted it

Arpan Banerjee noticed this and shared a screenshot of the notice. Adrian Dekker also wrote about it on LinkedIn, so more than one person has run into it.

Why I find this interesting

Target ROAS is one of the most sensitive settings in a campaign. A small change can shift spend and volume quickly, and a promotion is exactly when you don’t want the bidding target moving around. I’d guess that’s the reasoning behind the lock, though that’s my interpretation, and Google hasn’t spelled it out in the notice.

Google Ads shows this notice when you try to edit Target ROAS during promotion mode. Screenshot shared by Arpan Banerjee.

Some practical thoughts if you manage Google Ads accounts:

Set your Target ROAS before you switch promotion mode on. If you wait until it’s active, the field is locked.

Learn what the ROAS tolerance does before you touch it. Google offers it as the alternative, and I’d check its documentation first rather than guess.

Tell your clients up front. If someone asks you to adjust the target mid-promotion, you’ll want them to know it isn’t possible until promotion mode ends.

The takeaway

It’s a small detail, but the kind that costs you time if you find out in the middle of a sale. If you run promotions through Google Ads, plan your Target ROAS around them, and keep an eye out for other settings that get locked in the same way.

I’ve been doing SEO since 2006, back when we argued about keyword density and reciprocal links. So when a plugin I’ve used for years relaunches as Rank Math AI, I read the fine print before I get excited. This one is worth a closer look.

What Rank Math AI actually launched

Rank Math has released Rank Math AI. It’s less a brand-new product than a bundle of things that used to live apart:

Content AI, formerly its own standalone product, covers ideation, drafting, and optimization.

AI Link Genius handles internal linking. Think broken links and orphan pages, the unglamorous problems that quietly drag down a lot of sites.

AI Visibility shows whether your brand appears in answers from AI platforms, and how it’s described when it does.

Rank Math is pitching the package as covering both classic SEO and GEO (generative engine optimization). I’d usually roll my eyes at yet another acronym, but the pairing makes sense. Both disciplines now feed the same goal: being found and being trusted.

The Gemini addition

The most interesting change is that AI Visibility now tracks Google Gemini as well as ChatGPT. Rank Math says more platforms are coming, though it hasn’t said which.

A few practical details:

You can run your tracked prompts daily, weekly, or monthly.

It supports more than 30 languages, which matters for anyone working multilingual or international sites.

This data sits separately from Rank Math’s normal search ranking reports.

Why I think this matters

Your rank tracker will tell you that you’re sitting at position three for a keyword. It won’t tell you whether ChatGPT or Gemini mentions your brand when someone asks a question in your space, or whether the answer gets you right. AI-generated answers are taking up more room across search and discovery, so that’s a real blind spot.

It’s a different kind of visibility. You can rank well and never be named in an AI answer. You can also be named in one without ranking anywhere near the top. Rankings alone don’t capture either case, and that gap is what this feature is trying to fill.

I’d still treat any new tracking data with some caution. Prompt-based monitoring is a young discipline, and AI answers vary from run to run. Watch the trends over weeks, not single snapshots, before you make big decisions.

Availability

Rank Math AI and the expanded AI Visibility feature are live now. Rank Math has been around since 2018 and says millions of websites run its WordPress plugin, so a lot of site owners are about to see this in their dashboards.

If you’re already on Rank Math, it’s worth setting up a handful of brand and category prompts and watching them for a month or two. If you’re not, this won’t be a reason to switch on its own, but it shows where the tooling is heading.
