In a move to digitally empower millions of Indians in rural areas and educate them about how to do cashless transactions, Ministry of Electronics and IT has introduced 'Digi Dhan Abhiyan' campaign to enable every citizen, small trader and merchant to adopt digital payments in their everyday financial transactions.

“Television is one of the most effective and far-reaching mediums to create awareness and impart education. We are rolling out a dedicated TV channel to inform citizens about digital payment ecosystem, benefits and processes,” Minister of Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

DigiShala is a free-to-air channel and it is available on nationally on DD Free Dish DTH service. The potential viewership of the channel was more than 2 crore people across the country.

The channel, aimed at the rural and semi-urban population, would show programmes depicting step-by-step demos of making digital payments using UPI, USSD, Aadhaar, e-wallets, cards, besides various talk shows and panel discussions on products and services offered under Digital India.

Mr Prasad said the aim was to help citizens and small traders to switch to digital payments.

The launch of the TV channel is part of the government’s ‘Digi Dhan Abhiyan’, under which a new website ‘Cashless India’ has been rolled out.

“The website www.cashlessindia.gov.in will serve as a knowledge repository providing information on different types of digital payment methods, schemes to create awareness among citizens, government notifications and guidelines regarding digital payments,” the Ministry said.

It is exciting news for both broadcasters and viewers that Prasar Bharati has announced the 81st e-auction for the allocation of vacant MPEG-2 slots on DD Free Dish. The auction, scheduled to be held on August 28, 2024, aims to fill the slots for the period from September 5, 2024 to March 31, 2025.

DD Free Dish is India’s only free Direct-to-Home (DTH) service, offering a wide range of channels without any subscription charges. It provides access to a variety of genres including news, entertainment, sports, and regional content, making it a popular choice among Indian households.

The e-auction will take place on August 28, 2024. The last date for submission of applications is August 27, 2024, at 3:00 PM IST.

Eligibility -

For hardware purposes, IIT Kanpur has partnered with Saankhya Labs (www.saankhyalabs.com) using its Software-Defined Radio (SDR) NextGen P3 chip, incorporated into Broadcast Radio Heads (BRH), a reference smartphone, a USB dongle, and a Wi-Fi gateway.

Initial stages of development -

D2M is still under development and testing. Standardization and large-scale deployment have not yet been established.

Phone Compatibility -

Current smartphones may not have the necessary hardware to support D2M. Widespread adoption would likely require phone manufacturers to integrate D2M receivers into future models.

Spectrum Allocation -

Given the already congested radio frequency landscape, allocating dedicated spectrum for D2M transmission can be a challenge.

Content Licensing and Rights -

Delivery of content via D2M will require agreements and licensing models between broadcasters, mobile operators, and content creators.

Direct-to-mobile (D2M) technology may be introduced in India in 2025. According to media sources, India will launch D2M technology in 19 cities in 2025. As we know, D2M will allow multimedia content to be transmitted to smartphones without the need for an active internet connection.

The government wants to use D2M to provide digital streaming i.e. live TV on smartphones to a large section of the population that is still using 3G services. In areas such as education, D2M technology is expected to provide quality video content to rural populations without burdening the already stretched spectrum. Although earlier the government had tried to do this by launching DVB-T2 i.e. Terrestrial Service in digital form, but that plan did not work because the device related to it was not available in the market. TV manufacturers are still providing analog tuners only, whereas if they started providing digital tuners, mobile and TV broadcasting facilities could be provided through DVB-T2.

But now the government has decided to stop DVB-T2 service and start mobile broadcasting through D2M service. Which may be started on 56MHz spectrum (472-526 MHz).

However, its coverage will be much wider than DVB-T2.

Adopt DTH as DD's primary mode of telecasting content: Panel

An expert panel has recommended making direct-to-home (DTH) signals the primary mode of transmitting content for Doordarshan and to discontinue terrestrial analog transmission.

The Prasar Bharati Expert Committee, headed by technocrat Sam Pitroda, submitted its report to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on January 24.

It observed that in the present scenario, 92 per cent of Indian households access television through cable and satellite systems (Cable and and DTH).

"This scenario presents a strong case for switching off analog terrestrial TV broadcasts within a short period of time and adoption of DD Direct (DTH) as Doordarshan's primary mode of transmission," the Committee recommended.

It is expected that after the completion of all phases of digitization, DTH and Digital Cable technologies will stabilize and become the preponderant transmission and distribution platforms. The committee also suggested that Doordarshan expand its satellite and digital cable TV operations.

The panel said Doordarshan should continue to transmit through private DTH and cable and satellite operators.

This move from terrestrial to satellite transmission will result in considerable cost saving, even as it offers the possibility of a wider content variety as compared to the limited number of channels available through terrestrial broadcasts, it said.

Doordarshan runs a DTH service which was recently renamed 'DD Free Dish'. It was earlier named DD Direct Plus.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had constituted an Expert Committee for the purpose of reviewing the institutional framework of Prasar Bharati, including its relationship with government, its continuing role as a public broadcaster and measures needed to ensure technical up gradation of the organization.
A 'Group on Technology', constituted by the Committee to study these aspects, said switch over to satellite is more cost effective as it will allow Prasar Bharati to achieve annual saving of Rs 635 crore towards maintenance and operations and notional savings of Rs 1,294 crore pertaining to the planned expenditure for up gradation of existing terrestrial infrastructure in 12th Plan.
The Group also said transitioning to satellite would result in freeing up of spectrum and other assets such as real estate.
The committee in its report said in the long run, convergence will lead to a common transmission platform servicing audio, video and text formats. It also suggested that terrestrial TV operations should be selectively digitalized based on commercial viability.

Home TV was an Indian TV channel that offered Hindi language programs. On this channel, Chinese martial arts-rich serials were shown by dubbing Hindi, due to which the channel was very famous in India-Pakistan. If you had a C-Band dish or cable TV installed between 1996 and 1999, then you must have seen this channel.

Home TV aired in 1996 but stopped airing in 1999 due to financial reasons. Home TV was a very special channel for me at that time because all its programs were very good. And the biggest thing at that time was the first channel to show programs at international level.

Home TV was a competition channel for Zee TV, Star Plus and Sony TV during that time. Because there were not many channels available. I remember that when I had a cable connection, only 8-10 channels used to come because my television set was also in black and white. But my cable TV used to play only 8-10 TV channels.

प्रसार भारती ने क्षेत्रीय दूरदर्शन टीवी चैनल्स को नियमित प्रसारण करने को कहा है। इसके लिए प्रसार भारती ने एक पत्र जारी किया है। आपको बता दे की प्रसार भारती ने लॉकडाउन के चलते सभी क्षेत्रीय या राज्यों के दूरदर्शन टीवी चैनल्स को डीडी इंडिया" और "डीडी न्यूज" की सीधी प्रसारण फीड्स को उनके ट्रांसमिशन में उचित रूप से उपयोग के लिए उपलब्ध कराया गया था।

चूँकि अब पूरे भारत में भारत सरकार द्वारा लॉकडाउन प्रतिबंधों में ढील देने के मद्देनजर, दूरदर्शन के सभी क्षेत्रीय भाषा के टीवी चैनल (RLSS - Regional Language Satellite Services Channels) जिनमें हाल ही में शुरू नए टीवी चैनल, डीडी उत्तराखंड, डीडी छत्तीसगढ़, और डीडी झारखंड भी शामिल हैं, को अपने प्रसारण को 24X7 नियमित करने को कहा है।

इन चैनल्स से कहा गया है की डीडी इंडिया और डीडी न्यूज की साफ़ और सीधी फ़ीड पर निर्भरता के बिना अपनी सामान्य प्रोग्रामिंग को शुरू करे, क्योंकि अब यह फीड इनके लिए उपलब्ध नहीं होगी। यह RLSS द्वारा कोविद -19 से संबंधित सूचनाओं को समय-समय पर प्रसारित करने और इस संबंध में सरकारों के प्रयासों को उनके प्रसारण में उचित रूप से शामिल करने के लिए भी सुनिश्चित किया जा सकता है।

इसका नुकसान -

जो लोग अपने स्मार्टफ़ोन, Smart TV या लैपटॉप पर सोनी के लाइव टीवी चैनल्स सब्सक्रिप्शन का इस्तेमाल करके देखते थे उनको झटका लगा है।
जो लोग एंड्राइड फ्री-टू-एयर हाइब्रिड बॉक्स की सहायता से दूरदर्शन फ्री डिश और सोनी लिव सब्सक्रिप्शन का इस्तेमाल करके लाइव टीवी चैनल्स को देखते थे, उनको झटका लगा है।

हॉटस्टार और ज़ी5 सहित अन्य ओटीटी प्लेटफॉर्म भी अपनी सेवाओं से लाइव टीवी चैनलों को बंद करने का निर्णय ले रहे हैं, जैसा कि कुछ मीडिया में बताया गया है।

इसका फायदा -

केबल ऑपरेटर्स को लगता है कि इसका फायदा उन्हें मिलेगा, जो की पूरी तरह से सत्य नहीं हो सकता।

क्युकी मुझे लगता है केबल ऑपरेटर्स या टीवी इंडस्ट्री को नुकसान OTT सब्सक्रिप्शन की तुलना में , कई हज़ार गुना यूट्यूब के माध्यम से पहुँचता है। क्युकी यूट्यूब पर हर समस्या का समाधान और जैसा mood वैसा Content प्राप्त हो जाता है।

इस बात को समझना आवश्यक है कि जो लोग OTT सब्सक्रिप्शन के साथ साथ अनलिमिटेड ब्रॉडबैंड इंटरनेट कनेक्शन लेने में सक्षम है उनके लिए केबल टीवी या DTH के सब्सक्रिप्शन का खर्चा उठाना कोई बड़ी बात नहीं है।

और जो खर्चा नहीं उठा सकते वे मनोरंजन के लिए अनलिमिटेड ब्रॉडबैंड और OTT सब्सक्रिप्शन भी नहीं लेने वाले, क्युकी उनके लिए घर का किराया और बच्चो का दूध लेना प्रथम प्रायोरिटी होगी ।

अब बचे मध्यम वर्ग वाले ज्यादातर लोग -

आजकल बाजार में चीनी LED Smart TV सेट्स की भरमार है। 3000 की टीवी में भी यूट्यूब मिल जाता है, नहीं तो आजकल एंड्राइड फ़्री-टू-एयर बॉक्स ले लेते है और फिर इनमे डीडी फ्रीडिश का एक बार का खर्चा।
