Far-right Israeli minister condemned for taunting handcuffed Gaza flotilla activists | BBC News

There has been international condemnation of Israel's treatment of pro-Palestinian activists who were on board a Gaza-bound aid flotilla intercepted by Israeli naval forces.

The US, the UK, France, Italy and Canada were among the countries which expressed outrage after far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir posted a video showing himself taunting activists kneeling with their hands tied behind their backs.

His actions also drew rare criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said they were "not in line with Israel's values".

The flotilla, which carried a token amount of aid, set out to highlight the conditions for Palestinians in war-torn Gaza. Israel dismissed it as a "PR stunt at the service of Hamas".

More than 50 boats taking part in the Global Sumud Flotill set sail from Turkey. Armed Israeli naval commandos intercepted the fleet in international waters west of Cyprus, about 250 nautical miles from the coast of Gaza, which is under an Israeli maritime blockade.

Ben-Gvir – an ultra-nationalist who, as national security minister, oversees Israel's police force – posted a video on social media, captioned "Welcome to Israel". It showed him visiting a detention facility at the port of Ashdod where the activists are being held.

He is seen encouraging security personnel as they push down a female activist who shouts "Free, Free, Palestine" as he walks past her.

Ben-Gvir is shown waving a large Israeli flag next to dozens of activists kneeling on the ground with their hands tied behind their backs. He tells them in Hebrew: "Welcome to Israel. We are the masters." Other activists are shown kneeling on the deck of a ship as the Israeli national anthem is played.

The US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, called Ben-Gvir's actions "despicable". UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the video showed "totally disgraceful scenes", adding that she had sent a summons to the Israeli embassy to demand an "urgent explanation". Italy, France, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain said Ben-Gvir's actions were "unacceptable" and that they had summoned their respective Israeli ambassadors.

The US federal court has temporarily blocked sanctions against Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories, ruling that the US government violated her free speech rights. However, the US government has now filed an emergency appeal, seeking to reinstate sanctions on Albanese.
Albanese was sanctioned over her recommendation to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to pursue war crimes prosecutions against Israeli officials over their actions in Gaza. She also published a report accusing major Western corporations of complicity in Israel’s genocidal war.
On this special edition of The Newsmakers, Francesca Albanese talks about the cost of speaking out against Israel’s actions and the powerful efforts to silence her.

Police clashed with pro-Palestine demonstrators outside the House of Representatives (Netherlands) in The Hague on Monday, as protesters demanded the release of activists detained following the interception of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla.

Footage shows police forming cordons around the demonstration, detaining protesters, and dispersing crowds using batons and physical force as tensions escalated outside the Dutch parliament complex.

Demonstrators gathered to submit a petition calling for the release of Dutch nationals reportedly involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla, which organisers say was intended to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge Israel’s naval blockade.

Chants including “Free Palestine” and “Netherlands shame on you” were heard during the protest, while placards called for boycotts and an end to the blockade.

The protest comes amid continued interceptions of flotilla vessels in the Mediterranean and rising international attention on the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

As colleges hold graduation ceremonies across the country, many schools are attempting to silence pro-Palestine speech at the commemorations, including canceling speakers and eliminating live speeches by students altogether. There will be no live student speakers at the City University of New York's School of Law or at New York University's school-specific ceremonies after former students gave speeches that included expressing support for Palestine and criticism of Israel. Rutgers University canceled biotech CEO Rami Elghandour's commencement speech at its School of Engineering's convocation, citing complaints about his social media posts on Israel and Palestine. And the University of Michigan's president issued a public apology after professor Derek Peterson praised pro-Palestine students during his commencement address.

"Our students are being told that your families, Palestinian families, are expected to suffer and die, and you should be OK with it," says Noura Erakat, a Palestinian human rights attorney and professor at Rutgers University. Erakat adds that Rutgers professors have been asked not to teach about the conditions in Gaza. "We are asked to betray the empirical record, including the one on genocide and apartheid, and we refuse to do that."

"This will be the third graduation and commencement ceremony in a row where we do not have a student speaker, we do not have a faculty speaker and we do not have a live-stream commencement," says Shivani Desai, a member of CUNY Law Students for Justice in Palestine. "They took all of that away from us, and they took that away specifically because of Palestine repression."

Greens For Palestine Expose The Trap; Don’t Let Them Corbyn You

If the Greens want Palestine credibility, they can stop apologising to the lobby and start defending the people who gave it to them.
Right, so Greens for Palestine have just done the thing the Green Party machine should have done for itself. Anti-Zionist candidates are being thrown under the bus the moment hostile mainstream media pressure arrives. Palestinians inside the party are saying attempts are being made against their own “Zionism is Racism” motion set to return at Autumn Conference to soften or rewrite it by non-Palestinians, notably despite the fact Jewish members amongst others helped draft the original and very much accepted motion. And that the party that has gained credibility from being better than Labour and other parties on the subject of Palestine and the genocide in Gaza is now being warned not to become Labour the moment the Israel lobby starts banging on the door once more. Greens for Palestine are telling their own party, that solidarity is not a badge you wear when it wins applause and then shove in a drawer the moment it attracts some pressure. You either mean it or you don’t, you stand by it or you don’t. You can’t keep saying it while candidates get thrown under a bus the minute they breathe in a direction Zionists don’t like.
Greens for Palestine have sent one warning to the Green Party Executive, the national executive layer of the party, because they say local and national party figures are believing hostile press attacks and hanging members out to dry. They have also put out a separate statement over their Zionism is racism motion. That second letter is even sharper in some ways, because it is not just about candidates. It is about Palestinians inside the Green Party saying that their own political words, their own description of their own oppression, are not there to be cleaned up by people who are more frightened of accusations than they are committed to justice, quite rightly in my view. The complaint is that non-Palestinian Greens are trying to rewrite or soften it before the party’s own members get to deal with it democratically.

Greens for Palestine are stepping up as the Green Party leadership falters, throwing anti-Zionist candidates under the bus when faced with hostile media pressure. This situation highlights internal party struggles concerning the "Zionism is racism" motion, with non-Palestinians attempting to soften or rewrite it. The ongoing debates reflect broader issues within UK politics and the middle east.

'Phoenix of Gaza': Palestinian filmmaker captures Gaza’s life before Israel's genocide

Before Israel's genocide, families in Gaza gathered by the sea, children played and the streets buzzed with energy.
Now, much of it lies in ruins.
Palestinian award-winning filmmaker Yousef Alhelou was in Gaza weeks before it was decimated by Israel, documenting life before the genocide.
His sister, her children and many in the film did not survive.

Journey Through Palestine - Travel Documentary

Palestine means a lot of different things to many people, and may not be the most obvious travel destination. It is often associated with conflict and political unrest, overlooking the fact that it’s also a beautiful and fascinating region, with a vibrant culture, incredible historic landmarks, spectacular natural scenery, inspiring religious sites, tasty food, and friendly, welcoming people.

On this journey, I’m traveling through the Holy Land, a region important to the three main monotheistic religions, and known today as Israel and Palestine.

In this first episode, I’m exploring the West Bank, the largest and most accessible part of Palestine. From stunning natural scenery to intriguing historic sites. From the busy streets of Ramallah to the narrow alleyways of Nablus’ old city. From religious landmarks in Hebron and Bethlehem to the ancient ruins of Jericho. Along the way, I meet some of the people that call this land home, and sample the local cuisine.

I’ll do so from a traveler’s perspective, focusing on the positive stories and things to do. But here and there I also mention the conflict between Israel and Palestine, since it has impacted the lives of many people in the region. For those interested in the politics and modern history of the region, however, I recommend to read, watch, and listen to as many different sources as you can.

This is my first long trip after the pandemic started, and I’m grateful for the chance to travel again. It’s also my second visit to the region. While much of the footage is from the end of 2021 (including the ‘vlog style’ parts), I’ll also use some background material from 5 years earlier.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We start this journey in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, with its impressive Church of the Nativity at its core. After visiting the church, I explore the streets around it, meeting people and eating food in the bustling bazaar. There are many other places worth your time in and around Bethlehem, including the Milk Grotto, an olive oil factory (press), Shepherd’s Fields, and the Mar Saba monastery, surrounded by arid mountains.

Hebron is the next stop, a city in the South of Palestine, and (among other things) famous for its glassblowing factories, and also the Tomb of the Patriarch, or Ibrahimi Mosque. The streets around this place are divided between the local Palestinian community and Israeli settlers. As a tourist, you can visit both areas. At the end of the day, my guide Salwa takes me to a traditional Palestinian restaurant, where we eat some delicious food.

We continue this trip in Jericho, regarded as the oldest city in the world. Located next to the Dead Sea, it’s also one of the lowest cities on our planet, and can get very hot in Summer. Other sights to visit around Jericho include the Dead Sea, Nabi Musa, Qasr-al-Yahud, and St George’s Monastery, built into a cliff in Wadi Qelt.

Getting lost in the narrow alleys of Nablus’ old city was among my favorite things to do. There’s a surprise waiting for you around every corner, and perhaps the best one was the Al Aqsa kunafeh store, which is said to make the best version of this Palestinian dessert, which is popular around the Middle East.

We finish this journey in Ramallah, a young and dynamic city, attracting people from around the region to find work and get educated. It’s a commercial hub with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, and provides a different perspective on this part of Palestine.
