Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886) is the most important and original poet that the United States has ever produced. Her work and literary style have exerted tremendous influence on the later poets like Hart Crane, Wallace Stevens, Elizabeth Bishop, Sylvia Plath, Marianne Moore, Anne Sexton, Adrianne Rich, and Denise Levertov. The rhythmic, syntactic and thematic deviation of her poetry has influenced practically all North American poets, men and women. None can claim to be free from Dickinson’s influence. In one way or another, all North American poets —and many from other places, like Luis Cernuda, without going any further— from the 20th century onwards are the product of Emily Dickinson.

Dickinson openly disregarded the poetic rules prevailing in American poetry of her time. She was able to create an absolutely personal style and to write poetry of such an experimental tone that even today, one hundred and thirty-three years after her demise it has not been surpassed. For Dickinson, poetry was most important of all things life had to offer, and in her commitment to the poetic expression, there was not the slightest break from her definition of poetry.

Emily Dickinson was an avid reader. She knew the Bible perfectly. And she also read the works of Dickens, of the Brontë sisters, of George Eliot, of Shakespeare, of Lord Byron, and that of Shelley, Blake or Goethe. Consequently, her poetry reflects the influence of a legion of authors.

She was one of the most voluminous poets of the United States. The corpus of her works includes about 1800 poems. But during her lifetime, Dickinson only published seven poems: one appeared in Round Table; five of them were published in the Springfield Daily Republican and the seventh one was included in the anthology A Masque of Poets along with other female writers such as Helen Hunt Jackson, Fanny Fern. But the scholars maintain that Dickinson did not permit any of these publications. All the poems were published without any credit or whatsoever. Apart from these seven poems, no other poems did see any light before her death.

At present, Emily Dickinson holds a very important position in the field of American Literature. Dozens of books have been written - and continue to be written - about her life and work. In 2016, a biographical film was released that achieved great worldwide success, A Quiet Passion, directed by Terence Davies and masterfully performed by Cynthia Nixon. Her poems continue to enjoy the affection of readers, they are studied in universities around the world and translated into different languages. And hundreds of admirers continue to marvel at an immeasurable work that beats with life, so simple and so complex, so sincere and so full of secrets.

I am a fan of this simple, inexpensive and above all delicious dessert.

In every house, there must be some little secret to make it, but I'm sure they are all delicious. In my family, they have always put orange peels on it. I continued with the family tradition and I put a lot of oranges... it is exquisite!

In addition, I am always trying how to make desserts in a lighter way and this is one of the first where I tried using Stevia as a replacement for sugar.

The result was great and I recommend them blindly as you don't feel the difference; I promise you! And also this recipe has a touch of orange that makes it very fresh as well.

I hope you can try my recipe and above all I hope you like it as much as we do!

Ingredients

1 liter of skim or semi-skimmed milk
70 grams of Stevia powder
5 eggs
1 tbsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon
Zest of an orange
2 tablespoons of sugar for the caramel

Step by Step

Step 1/7 Preheat the oven to 180 °.

Step 2/7 In a baking dish, place the two tablespoons of sugar and put them in the oven until the sugar has caramelized. When it is ready, remove it and reserve it.

Step 3/7 In a large pot, beat the whole eggs with the Stevia, add the milk, vanilla and orange zest.

Step 4/7 Put it over medium heat for a couple of minutes, stirring hard so that all the ingredients are mixed. It does NOT have to boil!

Step 5/7 Remove from heat and place your mixture in the source over the caramel.

Step 6/7 Return to the oven for 40 minutes and voila!

Step7/7 Serve your dessert very cold ... mmm how delicious! I'm waiting for mine to cool!

NOTE: If you want to give a slightly bitter touch to your pudding, let the caramel cook a little more (without burning that, yes !!) and you will see how it gives it a special taste. I love it!

5 Common Mistakes When Trying to Lose Weight

It doesn't matter what time of year we are. We like to look good and in good shape. Therefore, it is not surprising the many miracle diets that proliferate online to lose weight in a very short time but, in the long run, are not healthy.

You are going to allow me to start this article with a call to sanity: if you need to lose weight, go to a dietician-nutritionist you trust. Do not waste your time looking for magic solutions on the internet.

Look for a long-term change that improves your health, that adapts to you, your needs and your medical history and circumstances. The only thing that we know for sure that serves to lose weight and maintain the loss in the long term, is adherence (being able to maintain changes over time).

The most common mistakes when trying to lose weight and how to fix them

This paragraph should have actually been the last one, the one that closed the post as a conclusion. However, there is so much misinformation and so many people doing business with the weight of others that I preferred to put it first, just in case the text bores you and you don't get to the last line.

1. Forget about miracle diets

Therefore, the first blunder when it comes to wanting to lose weight is precisely that: looking for a miracle or a short-term result, falling for it on absurd diets or, worse still, spending our money on products and methods that could harm us.

This would be the main mistake and one that should certainly rank first. Those that follow do not go in order of importance, it is rather an enumeration of habitual nonsense.

2. Don't focus on a specific nutrient

The second mistake is to focus on a specific nutrient, for example not consuming or reducing carbohydrates a lot, or consuming mostly proteins. Or in minimizing fats (the starch solution).

Yes, that there are so many “definitive solutions” that contradict each other, you should no longer leave us too calm about these methods. Let's stop looking at nutrients to look at food.

3. Don't trust light food

In third place, I will place the strategy of basing our diet on “light”, “light” or “0% 0” products. All these products are by definition ultra-processed, otherwise, they would not have a label on which to stamp those legends. They are products that by definition should not weight a healthy diet.

4. Do not substitute bars or smoothies for food

Taking fourth place in this messy ranking we have the error of trying to lose weight with bars or meal replacement shakes.

They are products whose first ingredient is usually, oh surprise! sugar. That they do not improve our diet at any point, nor do they contribute to improving our long-term health with healthier choices, which are expensive and that also, their caloric intake is not far from that of a well-planned salad.
In comparing the value and nutritional quality of, for example, a salad with a handful of chickpeas and a substitute bar, I do not go, because it would be an insult for the first.

5. Assume that you will not lose 10 kg in 5 days

I am going to leave the fifth position to the desperate solutions: I am going to the beach in a week and I have a michelín, or there are ten days left until my cousin's wedding and the dress tightens me.
A breeding ground for semi-fasts like the maple syrup diet, drink only smoothies, spend the day with green tea and an apple, spend the whole week eating pineapple and any other similar solution that you can think of. This type of madness only manages to tear up our metabolism, make us lose water and muscle mass, and that we regain the weight as soon as we stop doing awful things. That at least.

Sustaining those types of attitudes with food in the long term can lead to greater deficiencies or be a good breeding ground for developing an eating disorder.
