Preview: Liverpool Acoustic Afternoon @ 81 Renshaw 03/03/18

The Liverpool Acoustic Afternoon returns to 81 Renshaw for the first this year on Saturday 3rd March. 

Last seen back in September, this popular event now has a new regular slot on the first Saturday every other month.

As always there will be a couple of booked guests with 20 minute sets sandwiched between lovely layers of open mic performers.

Hosted by Derek King and Stuart Todd, the afternoon takes place in the performance room at the back of the venue, and is open to all ages. So why not come along, grab some lunch and a drink from the front bar, and enjoy the music?

Merry Hell return to raise merry hell at the Music Room this month

After last year’s sold out show Merry Hell – Liverpool Acoustic’s favourite folk-rock band – return to Liverpool Philharmonic Hall’s Music Room on Saturday 17th February 2018 for a repeat performance. Once again the tables and chairs will be cleared away to make space for the dancing – it wouldn’t be a Merry Hell show without dancing!

Merry Hell have been making a name for themselves in recent years as one of the most energetic and entertaining bands on the UK folk festival circuit, picking up plenty of awards along the way. The band won Best Group at the 2015 FATEA Awards, Best Album (Bloodlines) at the 2016 FolkWords Awards, and just last month bagged Best Single (Come On, England!) at the 2017 FATEA Awards.

Merry Hell is a band founded on the ever-evolving Folk tradition – music made by the people and shared by the people. Though their hearts and souls are tuned to the songs which came before, Merry Hell bring us new words and music forged from their own experiences, from the lows and the loves of their lives.

Emerging from the ashes of festival favourites, punk folk band Tansads, Merry Hell retains a nucleus of brothers John, Bob and Andrew Kettle (guitar, mandolin and vocals respectively), along with keyboard player, Lee Goulding and drummer Andy Jones, the addition of keys and vocalist, Virginia Kettle has helped create a new identity, purpose and spirit, in their music. She took little persuading to trade in her solo singer-songwriter past for a future in the band. Her prolific, ingenious and insightful song writing is one of the focal points of Merry Hell’s recordings and live performances – her presence has perfectly complemented a group which has taken particular pride in penning originals.

Merry Hell have a growing fan base with their albums receiving rave reviews in the music press. Their live shows are chock full of more Merry Hell magic as they continue to win over fans old and new with their infectious brand of modern folk rock.

Join Merry Hell on Saturday 17th February at the Music Room for much merriment, music, singing, laughter, and dancing! At a Merry Hell show there’s always dancing!

Support is provided by Knutsford’s Fine Lines, a band based around the core pairing of singer-songwriter David Boardman and co-vocalist Zoe Blythe. In their short time together they’ve already released a debut album ‘Hour Of Need’ and supported John Power (The La’s/Cast) and Mark Radcliffe’s Galleon Blast.

Anaïs Vila to launch new album next month with help from some friends from Lipa

Liverpool Acoustic are delighted to present the UK launch of the brand new album from talented singer-songwriter Anaïs Vila.

This exciting evening of music is happening at 81 Renshaw on Friday 1st December 2017.

Hailing from Catalonia, Anaïs Vila has a degree in Journalism, and a Masters in Theatre Studies. But her first love is music and in 2016/17 she took the opportunity to attend Lipa where she studied Pop Music and Music Technology, with a speciality in Songwriting. She came to the attention of a wider Liverpool audience in May 2017 with her highly impressive set supporting Roxanne de Bastion’s album launch at Leaf.

The new album Fosc, Cançons per Veure-hi Clar” (Temps Record 2017) is a bilingual affair recorded in Liverpool and Barcelona, and featuring six songs in Catalan and six in English. Anaïs will be performing on the night with with Andreu Moreno on drums and bass synth and Mateu Peramiquel on keys.

Support is provided by two talented friends currently studying at Lipa.

John Harrington is a pianist and songwriter inspired by James Blake and Regina Spektor. He’s studying Songwriting and Performance, and duets with Anaïs on one of her album tracks.

Enric Verdaguer is a 22 year old singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Igualada near Barcelona. He is taking Songwriting and Music Productions, and is known for his intimate and sensitive voice and his harmonically rich and pure songs.

John Farrington is a singer/songwriter from Liverpool inspired by the likes of Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, James Blake, Coldplay and Regina Spektor. His songs are delicate folk ballads that tell a story of emotions ranging from faith to love to family and loss.

John is a self-taught pianist who grew up singing a range of genres from English choral music to jazz and folk which are all evident in his music. He’s currently in his first year at LIPA studying songwriting and performance.

Enric Verdaguer is a 22 year old singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Igualada (Barcelona), based in Liverpool. He is known for his intimate and sensitive voice and his harmonically rich and pure songs.

He released his debut album “Moonstruck” on September 2015 edited by Sony Music Spain and Música Global. Since then, he has toured around Spain sharing his story. He has opened for several artists in his country such as The Lumineers, Noah Gundersen, Amaral, Chambao, amongst others.

Enric has been passionate about music since he started playing the electric guitar at the age of 13. He soon started uploading videos on Youtube where he shared covers of his favorite songs. Being 16 he started writing his own songs and then decided to pursue a career in the music industry.

He is currently working on his second album, coming next 2018,  and studying Songwriting and Music Production in The Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts.

Experience the Brazilian brilliance of João Terra at Liverpool Acoustic Live this Friday

When someone says ‘Brazil’ what springs to mind? Football? Carnival? Samba? Well at Liverpool Acoustic you won’t be surprised to hear we think of music. In particular we think of brilliant Brazilian João Terra who’s been wowing the regulars at our weekly Tuesday Tunes open mic ever since he first rolled into town.

João Terra will be headlining the next Liverpool Acoustic Live on the evening of Friday 3rd November 2017 at our cosy new venue 81 Renshaw.

Supporting João on the night will be blues from Persefomania, the musical vehicle for young French blues musician Pierre Mre. Describing himself as a One Man Blues Band, Persefomania takes us through the old blues era, with his open tuning and bottleneck play.

Completing the lineup is talented 15 year old singer-songwriter Megan-Louise who already has a string of TV, radio and festival appearances to her name. She currently recording her debut EP and is looking forward to sharing her new songs with the world.

While travelling in summer 2016 Pierre discovered the open tuning, and coming back home, after a blues duo experience decided to continue as a Blues One Man Band called Persefomania. He is currently immersed into the old blues sound playing with an open tuning and a bottleneck.

Originally from Lille, Pierre started to play live in pubs during the winter. After finding his music was appreciated over there he decided to move early January 2017 to Liverpool to get some experience. After meeting Rory Ballantyne he recorded his first EP “On the way to Exarchia” at his studio, The Vault Liverpool.

Still playing the blues as Persefomania he’s looking to start a new project as a duo and probably record a second EP before 2018.

Highlighted as “one to watch” by music magazine Buz, Megan Louise is a 15 year old Contemporary Country Singer Songwriter and Guitarist from Wirral.

Megan is currently busy writing and recording ahead of her first EP release later this year. Her dream is one of making contemporary country music mainstream and popular across the generations.

With lyrics, vocal control and performance skill well beyond her years she already has varied and numerous TV, radio and Festival Performances under her belt, having started honing her skills from the age of 9, when she started writing and playing at open mic nights to gain valuable experience.

Now an accomplished singer, song writer and guitarist who promises wonderful things with her unique country voice and own brand of Contemporary Country, Megan Louise is definitely one to watch!

April Fool’s Day 2017 sees the Liverpool Acoustic Afternoon return to Threshold Festival for the seventh year running with a typically exciting and varied lineup.

The event takes place from 1.00pm to 6.00pm on Saturday 1st April 2017 in one of the Baltic Social’s most versatile music and arts venues, 24 Kitchen Street.

Bluebird Cafe star Karen Turley launches new EP this Friday

Singer-songwriter Karen Turley launches her brand new EP Like We Used To in Liverpool this coming Friday 24th March 2017. Rescheduled from January, this night features Karen performing at Mathew Street’s intimate View Two Gallery with support from new country/folk duo Hands of Grain and Liverpool singer-songwriter Joanne Louise.

In 2015 Omagh-born, Liverpool-based Turley, a former member of bluegrass trio The Jesse Janes, was chosen to perform ‘in the round’ at Nashville’s iconic Bluebird Cafe with US music legends Beth Nielsen Chapman and Don Henry. A busy 2016 saw her supporting Xander and the Peace Pirates, and playing at the Liverpool Acoustic Festival, Chorlton Arts Festival, and the inaugural Folk Festival on the Dock.

Karen’s new EP was recorded in December 2016 and features four brand new songs from the rising country star.

So come along to the View Two Gallery and see one of folk and Americana’s rising stars performing in one of the best intimate venues around. With top class support, inspirational art, and a bar, what’s not to love?

Celebrate Liverpool Acoustic Live’s 8th birthday with the enchanting Elfin Bow this Friday

Liverpool Acoustic Live celebrates its 8th birthday this coming Friday 24th February 2017 with the enchanting Elfin Bow headlining at the monthly showcase event at the View Two Gallery. Described as “fairytale music for grownups” (Buz magazine) Elfin Bow’s brand of etherial folk has been delighting audiences across the UK over the past twelve months, and this show is an ideal opportunity to see her playing in an intimate venue ahead of the album launch show with her full band in March.

Support on the night is provided by Manchester based singer-songwriter Ben Williams who moulds the classic songwriting sound of Paul Simon with the laid back nature of Jack Johnson. Like Elfin Bow, Ben is a difficult artist to pigeonhole and is all the better for it.

Opening the evening is Ed Jones, who won the Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge in November 2016 with his song Love Is Blind. Singer-songwriter, author and journalist, Ed was born and brought up in Geneva before being exported to Lancashire, making for a heady mixture of northern cynicism and Swiss timing!

Contemporary singer-songwriter Phil Cooper heads to Liverpool with his interactive musical show this Friday

Liverpool Acoustic welcome contemporary singer-songwriter Phil Cooper to the View Two Gallery this coming Friday 28th October. Earlier this year Phil gave up an executive management job to follow his music career, and if the reviews are anything to go by it was the right decision.

One of the main people behind the popular Village Pump Folk Festival, Cooper has already gained a host of glowing reviews including “Quite possibly the most brilliant singer-songwriter you know know about and shouldn’t miss” (Jamsphere) and “One to see live, definitely” (R2 Magazine). His energetic performances draw comparisons with Neil Finn and Glenn Tilbrook, and include a real interaction with the audience whether that be by handing out egg shakers or passing round his “doodle book” for people to draw in.

Supporting Phil is exciting vocal duo Limerance who played recently at the Flyover Takeover and who’ve been impressing everyone at Liverpool Acoustic’s weekly open mic.

Completing the lineup is “Queen of the Ukulele” (our words!) Alison Benson, who charmed the audience during Folk By The Minute at August’s Folk Festival on the Dock.

Joe Symes & the Loving Kind are stripping down this Friday

Original, Liverpool three-piece rock band Joe Symes & the Loving Kind will be performing a rare, stripped down acoustic set when they headline the next Liverpool Acoustic Live.

Friday 22nd July 2016 sees Joe Symes & the Loving Kind playing in the intimate top-floor performance space at Mathew Street’s independent View Two Gallery. The band recently headlined the O2 Academy 1 for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds Official Aftershow Party, and have been featured on BBC6 Music, BBC Introducing, Arts Alive, and LFC TV.

Support on the night is provided by the Susie Jones Band. Preston-based singer-songwriter Susie Jones writes “songs of tender innocence and youthful experience” (Froots Magazine) and recently impressed everyone when she played at the Liverpool Acoustic Open Mic.

The evening’s lineup is completed by local favourite Rachael Dunn, returning to the View Two after far too long away. Rachael will be revisiting songs from her previous recordings, including the 2014 EP Placing Stars, as well as debuting new songs.

According to the weather forecast summer is due to arrive this week, so why not celebrate this Friday by getting out of the house and supporting live, acoustic music in the heart of the city?
