2024 - Week 5 Kings and Peasants

If you want to see who our Kings and Peasants of Week 5 are, look no further!

What we’re trying to do here is not just pick who we think the highest scoring players will be and who the lowest scoring players will be. For the Kings we’re trying to identify who is outside the highest ranked players on the week, or who has been in a poor run of form, that we think will perform well and have a good score. Conversely, for the Peasants we’re trying to identify someone either highly ranked or reasonably highly ranked, or has been in a good run of form, that we think will bust on the week.

Each week, myself and Chris compete to see who’s King and Peasant team wins (using our league of record’s scoring). We add up our King scores, and subtract our Peasants scores.

Chris is busy with a family wedding at the moment, so just my picks this week!

QB King: Geno Smith SEA (vs NYG)

Geno has been playing at an improved level this year, and the Seahawks are the prime beneficiary. He slung the rock over 50 times last week in a loss, but it was a competitive game with the Lions. This week, a far easier opponent - one that may be without their star offensive weapon. The only risk with this play is Geno might not be needed to do much against the Giants - but assuming they make it rain on the G-men he should be able to put up a decent amount of points in the process.

QB Peasant: Kyler Murray ARI (@ SF)

What we were sold with the Cardinals this year was a leaky defence that would need its great offence to pile up points. Well, the defence has held up their side of that relationship. The offence? Outside of a pointgasm against the Rams, not so much. This culminated with them largely being shut down the Commanders, who do not have one of the better defences in the league. Now going to San Francisco, a team they historically get owned bye? I’m out on Kyler this week. I’d avoid if you can find a reasonable streamer.

RB King: De’Von Achane MIA (@ NE)

It was tough picking an RB king this week, there aren’t a lot of great options outside of the widely accepted good ones this week. Enter Achane. Much hyped coming into the year (and the first couple weeks certainly delivered), his production has gone down the loo with the rest of the Dolphins offence. Matchups and game script have been against him. So, now enter the Patriots. Both teams are in very similar places right now. I’m still very alarmed at how little Mike McDaniel has done to try and get this offence on track, but in what should be a game the Dolphins actually have a chance of winning I fancy him to lean heavily on Achane in that endeavour. So, stick with him if you have him.

RB Peasant: Zack Moss CIN (vs BAL)

Moss has been a reasonable fantasy option for you so far, having a decent week against the Panthers last week. However, he was outshone by fellow running back Chase Brown last week. Now he goes up against the stout defence of their divisional rivals, the Baltimore Ravens. I’m not enthralled with that, even less so as I think the Bengals could be playing from behind in this one. If you have a better option I’d suggest sitting Moss this week.

WR King: Dontayvion Wicks GB (@ LAR)

I was a big fan of Wicks as a late round dart throw this season. Unfortunately, our fears about him being buried on the depth chart came to fruition, and the injury to Love of course didn’t help matters. But now Love is back, and Wicks climbs the depth chart with Watson’s injury. Hooray (unless you’re Watson, heal up soon pal)! What’s better is Wicks has an absolute cake matchup against the Rams this week. If the Packers keep the scoring party going from the second half of last week Wicks will need to get in on it early before the Packers salt the game away, but he’s got a good shot at doing just that, so stream with confidence.

WR Peasant: Tyreek Hill MIA (@ NE)

When I made this pick this week I thought I was being a bit edgy. Then a lot of the fantasy community proceeded to announce the death of Tyreek Hill. Typically, this will be the week he re-emerges. Which I genuinely hope he does, as I have him in my league of record - and he was also wide open multiple times last week but just didn’t get the ball. For as good as Hill is (he’s pretty brilliant, let’s be honest), he does unfortunately still require someone to throw him the ball accurately. Let’s hope another week as the starter enables Huntley to do that, but I wouldn’t count on it, so I’d play it safe and just bench hill if you’ve got a better option.

TE King: Taysom Hill NO (vs KC)

Similar to running back, it feels hard picking a king TE this week outside of the consensus good options. It’s pretty dire in tight end land right now. So, I’m going to deploy my get out of jail free card. Taysom Hill! He returned from injury last week, scored two TDs, and then left with injury. The Taysom ride is a wild one. But this was actually quite a positive for me - as his usage in the first two weeks was good, but OC Kubiak wasn’t using him in the gimmicky ways prior Saints offences have - which is what gave him a lot of his TD value. Well, Kubiak deployed it last week. This could be tied to their offensive struggles the last couple weeks, possibly due to some O line health issues. Still, that’s encouraging for Hill’s fantasy prospects. So if you’re in a jam at tight end this week, look no further than Taysom Hill! *UPDATE* Hill has been DNP Thursday and Friday, if he sits my king TE is Jake Ferguson.

TE Peasant: Dalton Kincaid BUF (@ HOU)

And here lies the latest victim of the tight end curse this year. Kincaid hasn’t been an abject disaster, but he certainly hasn’t lived up to expectation, and he certainly hasn’t taken a step forward like everyone hoped he would. I’ve seen enough to think this is probably just going to be how it is for him this year. The Bills should have a better go of it this week than they did against the Ravens, but I’m not sure how much that’s going to aid Kincaid’s case. *UPDATE* with Shakir out this does help Kincaid’s case - however the Texans may focus in on him more accordingly. I’d still temper my expectations for him.

K King: Jason Myers SEA (vs NYG)

This pick feeds into my blurb above on Geno. The Seahawks should be playing with this game comfortably in hand. They should be able to move the ball well, be fairly conservative, and play with a lead. All of that bodes well for a kicker. So, look no further than Myers.

K Peasant: Evan McPherson CIN (vs BAL)

And again, similar to my concerns on Moss above, I fear McPherson could get game scripted out against the Ravens. He could have some involvement, but I just think there’s likely to be higher upside options at kicker this week.

DEF King: Denver Broncos (vs LV)

Don’t look now but the Broncos may well have a winning record after this week. That was hard to imagine after the first two weeks of the season. But the defence is playing great, the offence is still a work in progress but possibly showing signs of growth. Most importantly though, they play the Raiders this week. The Raiders are also 2-2, but have the feeling of a team that could implode at any moment. Minshew and the offence haven’t played particularly well, Crosby is missing time on D, and - oh yeah - Adams has requested a trade which his head coach liked a post online about. Going into Mile High this week the Broncos could make it a very long day for them.

DEF Peasant: New York Jets (@ MIN, London)

The pro of playing the Jets this week is that some International game weirdness could come in to play. The con is that Sam Darnold and this Vikings offence have been great and they’ve not lost a game yet. The Packers did get some joy against Darnold in the second half last week, but the Jets just failed to fully capitalise on the Broncos. I think some revenge motivation will help Darnold do all he can to stick it to the Jets this week, so I don’t think they’re the best upside defence on offer this week.

2024 - Week 5 TNF Preview

TB (3-1) @ ATL (2-2)

A week after the bitter Falcons Saints rivalry, we have another NFC bout on our hands. The Falcons will want this one to keep the Bucs from pulling away, whilst the Bucs will naturally want to communicate who’s boss to the division. But this could be a feisty game - the Falcons have only had close games so far this season, thus it isn’t surprising to see them at .500. Meanwhile for the Bucs, outside of a blip against the Broncos where their defence was banged up to high heaven, and perhaps the Broncos turned a bit of a corner, they’ve been quite dominant - seeing off the Eagles, Lions and Commanders. I’d ultimately expect the Bucs to come out on top again as I still don’t think the Falcons are firing on all cylinders, but on a short week in a divisional bout it’s likely to be a close affair.
Fantasy wise for the Bucs, Baker Mayfield once again squarely finds himself in the streaming conversation. He’s a reasonable option, though if you can get someone like Darnold, Purdy, Fields I’d be more tempted to go with them. You can deploy Bucky Irving as a flex with his arrow pointing upward, as he is poised to become the lead back here. In PPR I don’t mind White as a flex play, I just don’t think there’s much upside. Fire up Evans and Godwin, don’t play Otton despite some productivity last week. McLaughlin is a fine kicking option, but sit the Bucs D.
For the Falcons, Kirk is still off the streaming radar. The Bucs D has been playing fairly well, but Kirk is still a statue whilst he works his way back fully from his achilles injury. He needs to regain some mobility in order for him and this Falcons offence to kick up a notch. Bijan should be playing, so you should play Bijan. He’s a bit banged up, but you shouldn’t sit him. Allgeier is a sneaky weak flex play in light of that, too. Trot Drake London out, and if you’re in a pinch at receiver I don’t mind you taking a shot on Mooney either (especially in PPR). I would, however, sit Pitts if you can find a tight end with a pulse - as that’s about all that’s required to be a better fantasy tight end than Pitts at this point. Fire up Koo, and don’t play the Falcons defence.

QB Kings

Naith’s king: Sam Darnold MIN (@ GB)

Entering the season, an improved Sam Darnold was a possibility. I don’t think anyone was really predicting him to be as good as he has been though. He’s played so well that even his odds in the MVP race aren’t too bad. I’m convinced that he’s at worse a streamer, but one or two more good games and he might just be a fully fledged QB1. The matchup on the road against the Packers isn’t the best (their defence has performed quite well in the last couple games, albeit with QBs that aren’t playing well at the moment), but I’ve seen nothing to suggest that Darnold with O’Connell whispering in his ear can’t perform in this one.

Chris’s king: Kyler Murray ARI (vs WAS) AND Justin Fields PIT (@ IND)

Chris does not pass the mirror test with his pick of Kyler Murray (as you are obviously starting him if you have him), and I told him as much on the podcast. So, we have agreed this week Chris can have two QB kings and their score will be averaged. So I’ll discuss Justin Fields more here. And to be fair to Chris, this is a bolder pick - but one I fully endorse. He’s been steady so far, notching his first 20 point game last week. The Steelers offence has been very conservative - but with such a good defence you can forgive them for that. If you’ve ever watched Justin Fields before as well, it also makes sense. BUT he has done remarkably well so far conducting Arthur Smith’s offence (and I’m not surprised we’re seeing more out of Smith now that he can just focus on coordinating vs being a head coach too). This matchup is among the easiest Fields has faced so far, and I wonder if we start to see the training wheels come off a bit more and he takes a couple steps forward. If the Colts do well, they have to put points on the board, if they’re comfortably in the lead he can play a bit more loose.

QB Peasants

Naith’s peasant: Jared Goff DET (vs SEA)

Home vs road Goff has historically been a thing. And Goff has been a good streamer in his time with the Lions. But that hasn’t been the case thus far in 2024. a plum matchup against the Cardinals (albeit on the road) should have been a smash spot for Goff last week, but he didn’t take advantage. Even though he’s returning to the safety of home, I don’t see much upside for him against this stout Seahawks pass defence, so I’d consider other options if you were thinking of streaming him.

Chris’s peasant: Anthony Richardson IND (vs PIT)

Chris is going both sides of this game with his QB picks. I understand why he has chosen Richardson. It’s a bold choice, because the player such as he is can blow up at any time, regardless of opponent. But this is a formidable Steelers defence he’s facing, and he has had a rough start. Some of his tape last week against the Bears was head scratching. We also need to remember that he is more akin to a rookie, as he missed much of his rookie season through injury and is very much still developing. Rookie QBs are by their nature inconsistent. He has the vibes of early Josh Allen too. So for all those reasons, if you have a decent option other than Richardson you should deploy it this week.

RB Kings

Naith’s king: Brian Robinson WAS (@ ARI)

I love me some Brob man. Wolverine. I had him in my league of record in his rookie season and he was great. Look, he’s not particularly efficient, but he’s a tough runner, and they rely on him in the ground game. Arizona isn’t the most formidable of defensive matchups, and with Ekeler out in this one due to a concussion that solidifies his workload. Roll Brob out there with confidence.

Chris’s king: Aaron Jones MIN (@ GB)

Can you say REVENGE GAME?! We love a revenge game at the LOC Fantasy Show. That added motivation will only bolster Jones to have a better game and justify Chris picking him as his king. This Vikings team has been great so far. This will be the toughest test they face, and the Packers D have been pretty good the last two times out (albeit against not the best opposition), but Jones involvement should lead him to a good performance here.

RB Peasants

Naith’s peasant: Rhamondre Stevenson NE (@ SF)

I’m a Pats fan that’s realistic. I picked Rhamondre as my peasant in Week 1 and I was (gladly) burned. Well, I’m going to back to the well, because in Week 3 the Pats were exactly what I (and many others) thought they’d be this season. Their o-line got exploited, jacoby couldn’t do anything in the pass game, and they were in a hole early so had to abandon the run. Mondre isn’t going to leave games (outside of injury) with only 6 touches again, but if the Patriots face a deficit his involvement will be limited. Going cross country to a niners team who will very much be looking to wash the taste of an ugly loss out of their mouth does not profile as a game the Patriots will be competitive in, and thus not be able to lean on Stevenson. I would get away from him this week if you can, he’s a weak volume based flex play for me.

WR Kings

Naith’s king: George Pickens PIT (@ IND)

Relative to the draft capital and rankings this is a bit of a stretch perhaps given the criteria of a “King”, but he hasn’t lit the world on fire so far. He’s been ok. Which was my fear for him coming into the season with a Steelers offence that didn’t profile to be great, whilst also prioritising the run. Well, the Steelers haven’t been great on offence but they have been competent enough. They have been conservative, but all of this is better than the outlook we had coming into the season. Fields has done what has been asked of him, now I wonder in a game with a fairly good matchup and either a defence that should allow the Steelers to play comfortably OR an opposing offence that will pressure them to put points on the board, if we can see the Steelers offence open up a little and Fields try and take a couple steps forward. Cue George Pickens, alpha receiver, ready to be the prime beneficiary. I think he has a big week this week, so lock him in.

Chris’s king: Brandon Aiyuk SF (vs NE)

This one does pass the mirror test. Albeit ranked highly and of high draft capital, it’s been a slow start by Aiyuk. We have warned this was likely to be the case due to his lengthy holdout, as this typically causes players to have a slow start. The target volume was there last week, but the attention Aiyuk got from the Rams D allowed Jennings to have his blow up. At home against the Patriots is a good spot for Aiyuk to have his turn. Kittle should be back, Samuel might be too, but that’ll just help pull attention away from Aiyuk and allow him to feast on the Patriots secondary.

WR Peasants

Naith’s peasant: Garrett Wilson NYJ (vs DEN)

This one is simple. Wilson has been good-not-great so far for what has been a serviceable Jets offence. I like his prospects for the season (and he has had some tough matchups so fair to be fair), but going up against Surtain is not the one. Surtain has been banishing receivers to the shadow realm so far this season, I don’t see why the same won’t happen to Wilson. Bench him if you can.

Chris’s peasant: Courtland Sutton DEN (@ NYJ)

Chris is really abusing the mirror this week. You probably weren’t starting Courtland Sutton anyway, but Chris has directed that you absolutely shouldn’t. I don’t disagree - he and the Broncos haven’t been great. They were much better against the Bucs last week, but how much was that about the Broncos, and how much was about how injury depleted that Bucs defence was? Independent of that, he’s also facing off against a stout Jets secondary. He’s an easy fade this week.

TE Kings

Naith’s king: Dallas Goedert PHI (@ TB)

Sometimes fantasy is a simple game. Actually, perhaps more than sometimes. But, anyway. Where was I? Oh yeah. Goedert predictably thrived last week with the absence of Brown, however I don’t think we could have been expecting the two big plays and yardage explosion that he had. Smith going down during the game helped with that also. Given the defensive game plan wouldn’t have been to focus on Goedert, the Eagles wisely leaned on him. Fast forward to this week, it looks like Brown and Smith are likely to miss the game. This effectively would make Goedert the top option in the offence, which instinctively I don’t actually love, as the Bucs will probably make more of an effort to key in on him and take him away. It doesn’t help that this is also a poor matchup for Goedert in the first place. So, why have I chosen him as my King? Well, because usage in fantasy is “king”. He is going to get targets. How much he does with them is another matter. But it’s pretty dire out there in the wastelands of the tight end landscape, so I’ll take the guy that should be heavily involved in the game plan as a volume based play.

Chris’s king: Mike Gesicki CIN (@ CAR)

Gesicki has been a shining beacon of light in what has otherwise been a dreary tight end abyss. Higgins return has crowded the receiving room somewhat, but we’re seeing a more pass heavy Bengals team this year (largely due to losing Mixon and a poor defence), so there’s plenty enough to go around. This weeks matchup is good for Gesicki too, as the Bengals should be able to put points on the board (and the resurgent Panthers may even make it a boat race).

TE Peasants

Naith’s peasant: Travis Kelce KC (@ LAC)

I can’t believe I’m calling Travis Kelce is a peasant. Such is life in 2024. But this is 2024, and Kelce is nearly 35 years old. Much like QB, when a tight end reaches the age drop off it’s not a steady descent, it’s a fall off a cliff (see late period Peyton Manning). Now I don’t think Kelce is washed, but I do think he is understandably winding down his NFL career. This coincides with a time where the Chiefs offence is seemingly quite diverse and really being lead now by Rashee Rice (when it comes to the skill positions anyway). I don’t think the Chiefs will really need to get out of second gear against the Chargers this week, so this makes me feel like Kelce will have another poor day. Darwin James being suspended is being a plus for him, but I’m sort of at the point that I need to see a good game from Kelce before I’d be willing to play him (same goes for Mark Andrews).

Chris’s peasant: Dalton Kincaid BUF (@ BAL)

Kincaid has had a rather slow start to the season, though he did have a better week last week getting involved in the scoring party on the Jaguars. Chris’ opinion is that might be short lived however, as going to Baltimore is a much stiffer test. With a Josh Allen who is loving being able to spread the ball around, it’s quite possible he does just that. You might not have a better option than Kincaid, but if you do you should probably look to it

K Kings

Naith’s king: Greg Zuerlein NYJ (vs DEN)

So I mentioned Wilson is a peasant this week, but Zuerlein is a king for me here. I think the Denver defence is pretty good, but the Jets should fairly easily beat them. Based on that, I think Zuerlein will have a good few opportunities for some field goals.

K Peasants

Naith’s peasant: Cameron Dicker LAC (vs KC)

I’m not sure how competitive the Chargers are going to be this week against the Chiefs, down potentially a couple defenders, O-lineman, and at best having a hobbled Herbert. Kicking field goals against the Chiefs is also not going to cut it if you want any hope of beating them. I would look somewhere else for a kicker this week.

Chris’s peasant: Ka’imi Fairbairn HOU (vs JAC)

Chris’ logic is simple here. The Jags suck, the Texans are going to want to get things back on track after a fairly decisive loss to the Vikings last week, so they’re going to do so by foregoing field goals and scoring a bunch of TDs (leaving g Fairbairn with the mere scraps). He could very well be right, especially with confirmation that Nico is good to go.

DEF Kings

Naith’s king: Kansas City Chiefs (@ LAC)

You can probably just read the peasant blurb for why I think the Chiefs D will be the king of the week, but long story short good defence facing undermanned offence in what should not be a competitive game. Fire them up

DEF Peasants

Naith’s peasant: Baltimore Ravens (vs. BUF)

The Ravens defence was one of the more lauded units coming into the season this year, but from a fantasy (and real life) perspective they’ve under performed. Maybe they get up for a big game against the Bills, but I wouldn’t count on it. The Bills offence can beat you in a variety of different ways, and so far this season we’ve seen a version of Josh Allen that actually takes care of the ball. You’ll need another defence this week if you were planning on starting the Ravens.

Chris’s peasant: Miami Dolphins (vs TEN)

You might raise an eyebrow as to why the Dolphins are Chris’ peasant defence of the week, when they are being quite widely touted as one of the better streamers of the week. They are certainly an option - but they come with a hefty amount of risk. This offence has been terrible, and they are likely onto their third QB in as many weeks. That’s going to put this defence in bad situations. Moreover, the Dolphins haven’t been overly great on defence so far either. They did improve as the game went on against the Seahawks last week, but only after they’d let them build a nice lead. The Titans and Will Levis have been bleeding fantasy points to opposing defences so far, and they’re likely to give some points over in this one too, but it could be far less than you’re expecting (especially if the Titans can deploy a more conservative offence to limit Levis’ mistakes).

DAL (3-0) @ NYG (1-2)

The Cowboys just keep finding themselves in interesting matchups. At 1-1 coming off an ugly loss they faced off last week against an 0-2 Ravens team that desperately needed a win. Win they did, now leaving the Cowboys scratching their heads at 1-2. Meanwhile, the Giants are (surprisingly?) coming off their first win of the season after putting the Browns in their place. They weren't entirely awful the week before against the Commanders either, suggesting Daboll might getting this Giants team on track a bit. But they couldn't possibly knock off the Cowboys here...could they? Stranger things have happened, and the NFC East can be weird. This Cowboys defence isn't the formidable unit they were last season, and this offence has the feel of a wagon with a wonky wheel at the moment, but they should still be able to get a W in East Rutherford - this could be a competitive game though.
Fantasy wise for the Cowboys, I like Prescott as a streamer in this one. The running game is still not much of a factor, meaning they'll like rely on the pass game. CeeDee is of course a no-brainer start. If Jake Ferguson is your TE you can roll him out there no problem too. It wouldn't surprise me if one (or possibly more) of Cooks, Tolbert and Turpin pops up and have a flex worthy game here,but good luck predicting which one. If you're in a pinch at receiver or flex though, you could do worse than one of these guys (I'd rank them in that order). As for the RBs, there's not much value to be had here right now. However, Dowdle appears to be getting a bit more involved. It's a short week too, meaning they might look to the running game a little more. I can't shake this feeling that Dowdle might have an ok week. He's an upside RB3/Flex for me, so if you're in a pinch or facing a bad matchup, I think you can consider using him. Aubrey is the GOAT, use him if you has him. If you're a Cowboys D owner it's not worth having another D to try and play another matchup, just use them here.
As for the Giants, if Malik Nabers has another good game I'm all in on him being a WR1. Coming into the season I thought, much like others, he'd have to be a generational talent to be a usable/reliable fantasy asset this season. Well, turns out he might just be that. He's so much of a talent, that he even appears to be elevating the play of Daniel Jones. That is no small feat. I'm not in love with him going up against Diggs, but with the volume Nabers has seen the last two weeks I can't bring myself to recommend shying away from him now. Wan'Dale is usable in full PPR here, but I'm not overly enthused with him as a flex option. Singletary is very flex worthy here however, so you can use him. Daniel Jones is better left on your waiver wires, but if you're struggling in 2QB or super flex he's an option. Don't play the Giants D or Greg Joseph.

JAC (0-3) @ BUF (3-0)

47-10 Bills.
Boy oh boy. This was like watching the Harlem Globetrotters play against the Washington Generals. Buffalo were just simply doing whatever they wanted in this game. Like, literally - the score would have probably been the same even if the Jags didn't take the field. It would appear the trade of Stefon Diggs has elevated this Bills team to another level. Without any ego in the locker room, this offence is thriving on a diverse array of a supporting cast alongside superstar QB Josh Allen, and it's completely working for them. Allen is just taking what he's given, which is exactly what you want your MVP level QB to be able to do. The Bills defence is defying expectation after losing White and Milano too, which of course helps.
For the Jags, it's just not clicking right now. Defensively they're not overly talented or imposing, whereas they do have a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball, but it's like a car in limp mode. There's value to be had here if they can snap out of the trance they're in, but there's not much to suggest that's going to happen anytime soon.
Fantasy wise for the Bills, Allen has firmly shrugged off my preseason worries that he may not even be a top 5 fantasy QB this year. I'm now more feeling I'd be more surprised if WASN'T QB1 overall. Cook remains an RB1 option, and whilst Shakir and Kincaid will disappear at times, they're still going to be solid options for your team. Stick with this defence in all but the worst matchups too.
And for the Jags, Lawrence is firmly off the streaming radar until he picks it up or has a plum matchup. You have to stick with Etienne but he's just an ok RB2 at the moment (Bigsby doesn't appear to be a threat, but this could possibly be linked to his week 2 injury). I'd sit all receivers in this pass game at the moment, BTJ and Kirk are both holds (though Kirk is circling the drain for being roster worthy at this point - but it was positive to see him more involved, at least. Perhaps his prospects will improve with more time passing since his offseason calf injury).

WAS (2-1) @ CIN (0-3)

38-33 Commies.
Raise your hand if you had the Bengals losing this one? Nope ok. Raise your hand if you had the Bengals starting 0-3? Still nothing - thought as much. Look, the week 1 choke job against the Pats is firmly in the rear view mirror for the Bengals, but I think this team's issues have been laid bear through three games. We all knew this offence would improve from Week 1, and they have done, putting in a good shift in Arrowhead and putting 33 on the board in this one. But their defence blows. Good for fantasy, not so much for the Bengals.
For the Commanders, that's two wins on the bounce now - a week after only scoring field goals they impressively hung 38 on the board. They will be inconsistent, that's just the gig with rookie QBs, but they're going to have their highs like in this one. Continue to start all your players against the Commanders though, their defence is even worse than the Bengals.
Fantasy wise for the Bengals, Burrow will still be a good option going forward, Chase is obviously elite. Chase Brown got a bit more involved in this one, but Moss is still the back to own here - he's still only a matchup dependant flex play though. When Higgins gets up and running a bit more he should return to fantasy value, the hope would be he becomes a WR2, but I'd treat him a bit more cautiously than that until we see him perform (though a matchup in Week 4 against the Panthers may be too tempting to pass up). If you waited to draft a tight end, look to Gesicki - he's probably a weekly starter with the current tight end landscape. Lastly, if you're in a deeper league you may want to take a look at Iosivas. His return takes a dent with Higgins returning, but we've seen before Tyler Boyd have some value when all 3 receivers were healthy, and with no Mixon around and a poor defence this may be enough to up the pass volume in this offence and make him a potential flex worthy play.
For the Commanders, if you've got Daniels you're good. He'll be up and down, but just roll him out there. My love for Brob knows no bounds, he's usable every week (outside of tough matchups). McLaurin will be inconsistent - you may just want to play him in favourable matchups until Daniels develops some more chops in the passing game. Ekeler got a concussion in this one, he's not going to be reliably usable anyway (but this is great news if you're a Brob owner in week 4).

2024 - Week 4 Waiver Academy

Here’s our favourite waiver options this week!

check to see if available: Jordan Love

Sam Darnold: The man’s MVP odds have shot up with his strong start to the season. He is competently leading this Vikings team so far. We’ve yet to see them really face any adversity, but they’ve been dominant. The most solid option available. A short term and potential season long option
Brock Purdy: The passing game got going in the niners last game despite missing Samuel and Kittle. I think the Patriots true colours showed last week, now they have to go cross country to a niners team that needs a win. Purdy should be a steady option again. A short term and potential season long option
Baker Mayfield: It was a rather disappointing game for the Bucs all around last week, their undermanned defence would have probably leaked points to Appalachian State. They got in a hole early, a hole that the Denver D didn’t let them out of. The Eagles should be an easier matchup, go back to Baker if you need a QB. A short term and potential season long option
Caleb Williams: Williams started to show us why he was so lauded against the Colts last week. He still needs to improve, but the Bears cannot run the ball to save their lives at the moment. The Rams pass D just got shredded by Brock Purdy, so I think Williams can have a good game here. A short term and potential season long option.
Justin Fields: This is not the sexiest option on the list, but Fields is playing competently right now and gets a fairly soft matchup against the Colts. Harris is a bit banged up, so they may lean on Fields a little more this week. A short term option
Andy Dalton: Did not expect to be suggesting you consider Andy Dalton as an option this week, but here we are. He was on fire last week and has seemingly energised this entire Panthers team. Don’t go expecting him to do the same as last week, but Dave Canales is the same coach who maximised Geno Smith in Seattle and Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay. He should continue to be able to get a tune out of Dalton, especially against a Bengals defence that has been quite underwhelming so far. Also, can you say “Revenge Game”? A short term option

check to see if available: Chuba Hubbard, Bucky Irving, Alexander Mattison, Carson Steele

Braelon Allen: He has been surprisingly effective behind Hall so far. He likely won’t have more than flex value week to week, but we’ve seen teams who can support two fantasy relevant RBs before, and he’s a premium handcuff if anything were to happen to Hall. Has season long appeal
Cam Akers: As Naith said on the preview show last week, he was close to being the King of the Week at RB. Akers (just about) seized his opportunity last week, scoring a TD. Mixon is week to week, it’s now clear how close Pierce is to a return, so it’s worth adding Akers just in case - especially with a much softer matchup against the Jags on deck. He’ll be a good volume play again if the other backs sit. A short term option
Cordarrelle Patterson: Both Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren are nursing injuries right now. Harris has seemingly already indicated he’ll be fine for Sunday, at worse Patterson may mix in, but if both backs were to sit will likely see a lot of volume. A short term option
D’Onta Foreman: I’m not really too hot on this Browns offence at the moment, they really struggled to run last week and the O line has a lot of injury issues. But he seems to be getting the more valuable touches than Ford, so if the O line gets healthy and the offence improves, he could have some value. A speculative option

check to see if owned: Rome Odunze, Quentin Johnston, Allen Lazard, Jordan Addison

Darnell Mooney: You may have been expecting to see Jennings atop this list. He’s second, you can see his blurb for why. But the reason Mooney is first is because he could carve out some season long flex value. He’s been reasonably well involved in this offence so far, I would argue in the same conversation as London and Pitts. If Kirk can shake some of the rust off this offence could take a step forward, and Mooney would he a prime beneficiary. A potential season long option
Jauan Jennings: His week last week was stupendous for sure - but that will likely be his best game of the season by far. Once Samuel, Kittle, and potentially even Pearsall return his value will be gone. But, until that time, we can’t ignore that he could have value, especially with Aiyuk still trying to get back into a groove after his lengthy holdout. Assuming both Kittle and Deebo sit against the Patriots this week, Jennings arguably deserves to be started in your league. A short term option.
DeMario Douglas: This is one more for PPR, but the Pats offence is yearning out for a reliable weapon in the passing game. Douglas has shown he can be a serviceable receiver, and got it going a bit against the Jets last week. It would probably be wise for the Patriots to lean into that, and he may benefit when Maye eventually starts. A speculative option

check to see if available: TJ Hockenson (reserve stash), Dallas Goedert, Mike Gesicki

Cole Kmet: It’s pretty dire times at tight end at the moment. Cole Kmet popped up last week, which is partly a side effect of the sheer pass volume, but also I think a result of an offence trying some things to get going. Well, using Kmet was working. The Bears figure to be very pass heavy still, so I think that gives him some value. Rookie QBs typically love leaning on tight ends as well. A potential season long option

Matt Prater: A kicker tied to a good offence is a good thing. Particularly when they’re playing a defence as poor as the Commanders.
Cairo Santos: This Bears offence isn’t fully clicking at the moment, and it’s causing them to stall out. I would expect the Bears to move the ball a bit easier against the Rams, which should give Santos the opportunity for some field goals
Chase McLaughlin: He didn’t get too many opportunities last week with the Bucs struggling and the game script not being favourable. A more competitive game at home in Sunny Florida keeps his value high.
Blake Grupe: The Saints offence hit a road bump against the Eagles last week. I think they get back more towards what they were in weeks 1 and 2. In some conditions and against a bitter rival, Grupe should be able to boot at least a couple through the uprights.
Jason Myers. Not massively in love with this one, but in some conditions in what should be a competitive game against the Lions, Myers should have his chances.

DEF

Houston Texans: The Jags have not been at the races so far. This gives me pause slightly as these AFC south games can get weird, but the Texans will be looking to get back on track after a rough game last week, and the Jags at home figure to be the perfect chance to do just that
Miami Dolphins: I considered them for number 1 on this list, but Miami’s own offensive struggles may hinder their defensive fantasy potential slightly. But the Titans and Will Levis give fantasy points to opposing defences like it’s Halloween, so they’re still a good option
Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings defence has been elite so far. Going into Lambeau may be their toughest test yet (possibly even harder with Love potentially returning), but the Vikings D should be trusted until they show us otherwise
Kansas City Chiefs: They go to face a Chargers team who at best will have a hobbled Justin Herbert. The champs profile to pick up another win in LA.
New Orleans Saints: The Falcons aren’t fully clicking at the moment, and this Saints D has looked pretty good through three games. They should have a decent game, but could dominate the Falcons if things go their way
Tennessee: Titans Miami figure to be onto their third QB in as many weeks. I’m not sure I entirely trust the Titans defensive on the road with their offence putting them in bad situations - but if you can’t get one of the other higher defences on this list they’re worth a dice roll against a Dolphins offence that has been entirely underwhelming so far this season
Los Angeles Rams: You might have to hold your nose a bit with this one. This defence isn’t an impressive unit, but neither is the Bears offence at the moment. Caleb is good for some sacks and potential turnovers, so the Rams defence will have opportunities

2024 - The View From Across The Pond: Week 3 Recap

“The View Across The Pond” aims to focus on the key points to call out from a given week. You’re not going to find “can confirm Breece Hall is still an RB1” in this article. Instead, we try to comment on what’s changed, notable developments, etc.

General comments on the week:

This is an unpredictable game. You can only make decisions based on what has happened and the info you have to hand. You cannot predict the randomness factor, however there is something to be said for putting yourself in a position to be lucky (see Jauan Jennings, Cam Akers).
The important thing is to evaluate your decisions and say: ok, what is it that caused me to evaluate this correctly, or what did I miss or evaluate incorrectly that lead to a decision that did not go well. You will not be able to succeed with this every time, sometimes things just can’t be predicted, a random bounce, a bad ref call, etc. But this is the game
Offences have been generally struggling a lot so far. Hopefully this is just an extended slow start and we start to see teams get it going as we head into October

LAC (2-1) @ PIT (3-0)

20-10 steelers
Herbert played on a high ankle sprain again, no palmer
Still Justin fields
Would have been really nice to see this game with a healthy Justin Herbert, but I think we can officially say the chargers are legit. Herbert left this one re injuring it
QJ may be a real thing, albeit needs a healthy Herbert. Dobbins did reasonably well considering the matchup
Fields has to be the starter going forward for the steelers, he’s the best thing for them right now. It’s not great for fantasy, but it’s great for them
Steelers d is elite, I think chargers d is a good unit too
Austin is a one off

HOU (2-1) @ MIN (3-0)

34-7 Vikings
No mixon or Addison
The Vikings are legit, book it. Sam darnold (have a day!) is officially in the streaming conversation
I want to see the Vikings away from home against someone other than the giants, but I think we need to be scared of this defence
Nailer has value whilst Addison is out
Better days ahead for Texans, they just faced an elite d I think
Cam Akers coming through in a pinch, usable whilst Nixon and pierce are out

PHI (2-1) @ NO (2-1)

15-12 eagles
No aj brown or taysom hill, lattimore returns for saints
A very weird game. But this happens when two good teams face off sometimes - both Ds stepped up, both offences made some plays
Both QBs disappointed in this one, relative to expectation - but I think they’ll both be better. Eagles need brown back though
Don’t read too much into Dallas goedert…a couple random big plays, the absence of aj brown. DeVonta smith got a concussion here too. That being said, if they’re both out again he’s a volume option
Olave came through, shaheed did not - they’re still both viable, shaheed nearly got a TD
Think this saints d is legit
Barkley have a day!

DEN (1-2) @ TB (2-1)

26-7 broncos
Bucs d banged up going into this one
The broncos were playing a junior college defence in this one with all the injuries. The Bucs just gave this game to them as well as that, I’m not sure if it was over confidence or what
I do not think this broncos offence has turned a corner. Fade all of them still
For the bucs o, this wasn’t the easiest defensive matchup, and their own defence did them no favours.
I think we have a changing of the guard in the backfield with Bucky Irving
Evans will be better, he got Surtain-ed. If you have a receiver playing Surtain, bench them

GB (2-1) @ TEN (0-3)

30-14 packers
No love again
Willis revenge tour on the nfl continues, it may go on hiatus now though (or maybe they don’t rush love back?). Just goes to show what having a good offensive coach can do for your team
I don’t think we learned anything here. We know the packers are a good team, and the titans show flashes of good and bad.
Packers defence have a day
Jacobs will be better, tough run d
Pack d shut down the titans run game, wouldn’t be too concerned with pollard
Ridley got erased by Alexander, Hopkins had a decent day. I wouldn’t expect this to be a common occurrence

NYG (1-2) @ CLE (1-2)

De Shaun Watson facing possible suspension for latest lawsuit

The browns got embarrassed. This was a joke by the browns. Are you kidding me? You just lost to this giants team who lost to the commanders?
It was nice to see Amari cooper get going, that’s about the only positive for the browns.
I think the browns would do better with Winston in at qb at this point
This browns backfield is quickly becoming one to avoid, or at least one without much upside
We may have to consider the possibility that Singletary and nabers may have some regular value. They’re not guaranteed to be consistent, but the giants may be settling in a bit
Gutted if you needed the Singletary TD, but that’s the right football move

CHI (1-2) @ IND (1-2)

21-16 colts
No Keenan Allen, no Buckner for colts d, downs plays first game
Shane Waldron should not be an nfl offensive coordinator. I can see potential in this bears offence, but he’s holding them back.
Avoid bears running backs, there’s some value in the receivers. Caleb can play, just needs an online and an oc to help him
I think we’re seeing with Richardson what normally happens when DCs get some tape on young QBs. Perhaps he hasn’t been quite as electric as he was last year too. He has the feeling of very early Josh Allen - which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it’s just where he’s at
Jonathan Taylor have a day
This Colts receiving corps is going to be inconsistent
Some ugly picks in this game by both qbs - it’s a learning curve

CAR (1-2) @ LV (1-2)

36-22 panthers
Andy dalton first start
We expected some sort of a bounce for the panthers with Dalton being named the starter, but I don’t think anybody could have been expecting this
Is this schroedingers raiders? I don’t think we’re going to be able to easily predict this team week to week. Nothing has changed in terms of player relevance, but it’s clear they’re just going to be inconsistent.
Might not be long before AOC takes over for Minshew
Don’t read too much into this explosion of competency by the panthers all of a sudden. It’s an encouraging sign, and I think this makes diontae, hubbard and thielen (health pending with hamstring) relevant, but they’re still not likely to be consistently good options

MIA (1-2) @ SEA (3-0)

Thompson first start, no mostert or walker
I think this game went mostly how we were all expecting (fearing?) it would. Seattle were competent as has been on display from the first 2 games, any hopes of Skylar Thompson being able to capably run this dolphins offence were dashed. Tim Boyle might even be an upgrade with the Thompson injury
For Seattle, as you were.
Miamis defence started this game dreadfully again, but they finally picked it up as the game went on. This so far still seems like a fairly good D to target though
For the offence, we’re nearing all hands on deck panic stations. I’m surprised that Mike McDaniel hasn’t been able to weave his wizardry and make this offence even competent so far. I want to believe he’s going to revive the great run offence from last year, and that Hill can be supported and fed - but I’m officially concerned. I wouldn’t touch anyone outside of ahcane and hill in this offence right now

BAL (1-2) @ DAL (1-2)

28-25 ravens
Both teams seemingly simultaneously wanted to win and lose. The ravens were in a position to walk away with this one, the cowboys played their way back into it. Ravens may have a D issue
Cowboys still finding their feet on offence. No one is a confident start outside of Lamb right now on this team, and probably Ferguson. Dowdle is the back to own, but he needs a bit more usage/some goal line potential to be relevant.
Aubrey is GOAT.
Ravens O still feels a bit clunky, but there’s value here - it might just be Lamar, Henry and Flowers though. Any hopes of Likely being a thing are dead, and Andrews’ value is on life support

DET (2-1) @ ARI (1-2)

20-13 lions
Bit of a weird game, both offences struggled to fully assert themselves in this one.
Your Lions came through for you for the most part, except LaPorta - who is now dealing with an ankle sprain. It’s been about as bad a start to the year for him as it could be, you’d like to think he’ll turn it around but you’re probably going to need more patience.
MHJ came through again but Cards generally struggled here. I would think better times are ahead
This Cards D may not be quite as trash as we all thought, credit to Gannon for that.

SF (1-2) @ LAR (1-2)

27-24 Rams
No kittle or Deebo, no kupp and weakened o line
Like…what? The Rams should have had no business winning this game coming into it. But credit to them, they hung in there, had a good game plan and executed. The niners injuries too are likely catching up with them, but they’re definitely not firing on all cylinders right now
Kyrens value remains, he is the complete engine of this offence without Puka and Cupp. He’s a great player, but didn’t think he’d be capable of being a one man band, but that’s probably helped by McVay. It’s pretty much him or bust for the rams
Aiyuk’s slow start continues, he will heat up. Credit to you if you were opportunistic and streamed Jennings, he might be usable next week if Samuel and Kittle sit again, but don’t get too excited over him. Mason remains solid, and Purdy the streamer returns

KC (2-0) @ ATL (1-1)

22-17 chiefs
No Pacheco of course
Falcons gave it a good crack, but the Chiefs are inevitable. If Kirk can regain his mobility this Falcons offence could really take off, but their potential is capped until that point in time. And the Chiefs continue to get it done, which should surprise no one
As you were with the Falcons. Mooney might be a nice option if you’re in a pinch at receiver
Steele should do an admirable job of filling in for Pacheco, but this Chiefs offence is going to continue taking turns in fantasy relevance. Except rice, you can count on him. It might be time to put Kelce out to pasture though
