In this episode of Lorenzo’s Music Podcast, I meet Brandon Lucas Green, creator of the new site for musicians called Unstream. Brandon tells me about being a musician and also a product builder, specifically his latest project, Unstream. This app helps music lovers discover where to support their favorite artists beyond mainstream streaming services, aiming to help independent musicians financially by sharing their non-streaming platform info.

We discuss Brandon’s musical background, from classical piano training to alternative rock and experimental genres. Brandon also tells me about his experiences in the tech industry and the importance of transparency in building community-driven projects like this.

Key Takeaways

Musician Support Unstream helps users find ways to support their favorite artists.

Inspiration The app was born from Brandon’s desire to build his own music library.

Streaming problems Unstream aims to bridge the gap between artists and their supporters.

MusicBrainz MusicBrainz provides a valuable resource for music metadata.

Works at Buffer Buffer practices radical transparency, sharing internal information publicly.

Community engagement has led to unexpected collaborations.

We didn’t have a complex rig when we first started our band stream using Linux. In this tutorial, we show how we got started with what we already had. After we learned more and the stream got stable, then scaled up our gear. We began with mixer output into a 2-channel soundcard straight into OBS before adding more advanced routing.

A practical Ubuntu Studio workflow for band streaming

A beginner path that starts with a 2-channel OBS setup

How we evolved into Ardour + Patchance over time without changing core tools

In this episode of Lorenzo’s Music Podcast, I meet Cory Casciato, also known as Ether Diver. Cory talks about starting out as a music journalist to becoming a musician and also a creator of sample packs and presets for synthesizers. We discuss sound design and the tools he uses to make music for both digital and physical synthesizers.

We talk about music interests, from his early influences and what inspires him creatively today, along with his recent music project “Mechanics of Mysticism”. We also talk about his community music review project, “Other People’s Music,” where he reviews independent artists’ tracks, to hear new music and connect with the people who make it.

Key Takeaways

Music journalist Ether Diver is a semi-retired music journalist and musician.

Synthesizers He creates sounds and presets for synthesizers and sample packs.

Music production He transitioned from journalism to focus on music production with noise soundscapes.

Other People’s Music is his community for music reviews.

In this episode of Lorenzo’s Music Podcast, I meet Jay, who runs the music calendar website mkeshows.com, a community calendar dedicated to showcasing live music events in Milwaukee. Jay talks about becoming involved in the DIY music scene and connecting local artists and audiences through this centralized platform. We discuss the challenges of show promotions and the innovative use of Gancio, the open-source federated calendar software that powers his site.

Jay tells me about his history in the music scene over the years, including his work with various bands like Milorganaut and his involvement in the now-defunct Borg Ward venue. He also shares insights into his new project, Fall Tragedy, and his upcoming tour in Japan. We mention the importance of grassroots efforts in promoting local music and the potential for mkeshows.com to become a great resource for both artists and fans.

Key Takeaways

Gancio Calendar Platform: A community calendar for shows.

MKE Shows: built for the need for a centralized calendar arose from the chaotic show scene.

Open-source: Ganchio was chosen for its open-source and decentralized nature.

Music Community: He emphasizes the importance of community in promoting local shows.

DIY Music: The DIY ethos is strong in the Milwaukee music scene.

I wanted to share a full follow-along walkthrough showing exactly how we set up our Ardour DAW workflow on Linux for our weekly band live stream, and save it as a reusable template.

What I walk through in the video

Starting a clean Ardour session for streaming

Building a practical track layout for drums, instruments, and vocals

Routing tracks into buses

Applying basic EQ/compression for better clarity

Running a quick soundcheck before going live

Saving the whole setup so next stream is faster

Why this workflow helped us

Instead of fixing routing problems every week, we now open one file template and update it each performance when needed.

If you stream with multiple inputs and want fewer last-minute audio surprises, this process should help.

After you watch, leave a comment on YouTube with your audio interface, how many channels you’re using, and your band live streaming experiences.

In this episode of our podcast, we delve into the innovative world of Telepaesants, and remote collaboration in music with Michal Seta and Dirk Stromberg. As musicians and audio engineers, they use open-source technology to create unique performances from different geographical locations.

Michal, based in Canada, has a background in music and technology, having been a Linux user since 1997. He explores interactive sound and multimedia art, ultimately culminating in his work with telepresence at the Societe des Arts et Technologie (SAT) in Montreal and also works at lab148.xyz developing open-source products and services facilitate the design and deployment of collective interactivity and group immersion.

Dirk, on the other hand, is an audio engineer and teacher based in Singapore, with a passion for free improvisation and building custom instruments. Together, they create music in real-time across different locations.

We talk about the concept of telepresence, which allows artists to collaborate online in real-time, creating a shared musical experience despite being physically apart. Their collaboration has resulted in performances for different venues in multiple time zones, with musicians joining from as far as Japan to Portland, Oregon.

They discuss the challenges of creating a seamless audio and visual experience. Their performances are not just about music; they are an exploration of presence and interaction in a digital space.

The also tell me about the instruments they use, including unique ones that they created themselves.

Key Takeaways

Remote Music: “We play remotely, but it feels like we’re together.”

Telepresence: “is about rethinking how we exist in new spaces.”

Open-Source Music: “We use open-source software to build our virtual environments.”

Creative Collaboration: “We adapt our setups based on the venue’s capabilities.”

In this video I break down the audio routing setup we use for our weekly band live streams on Ubuntu Studio. You’ll see how our 18-channel interface hits Patchance (virtual patchbay), gets mixed in Ardour, and then feeds a clean stereo mix into OBS. It is our full open source workflow for getting studio-quality sound into a live stream.

-What you’ll learn: our end-to-end routing chain from interface to Ardour to OBS, plus how we keep it all open source.
