But capsaicin isn’t just good for its flavoring. It’s also packed with a lot of health benefits. This includes everything from helping you fight against certain types of physical pain to potentially helping fight off diseases. Sometimes the capsaicin is consumed, but other times its used topically on your skin. That’s the case with some creams containing capsaicin. In some situations, people can get relief from things like arthritis pain or pain derived from complications of shingles. The first time you use it on your skin, capsaicin cream may sting a bit. It works by activating a pain receptor, and eventually desensitizing it in a way that helps alleviate pain.
While you can sometimes get relief from using a capsaicin cream, other people have found benefits from consuming capsaicin.
Studies have looked at things like the possible antioxidant benefits tied to capsaicin, plus the potential for helping with weight control. It’s said consuming capsaicin can make you feel fuller, plus it also likely helps increase energy expenditure. It’s believed capsaicin may even have some anticarcinogenic benefits. There’s at least some evidence that capsaicin may be able to help destroy certain cancer cells. Another possible health benefit could be related to helping treat antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. It’s not likely capsaicin can replace the need for antibiotics, but it may be used in a way that helps keep people from developing resistance to them or it may even reduce the amount of antibiotics needed.
Many researchers maintain more research is likely needed...
To find all the possible health benefits and directly tie them to eating capsaicin in food, it could be a good place to start. Luckily, there are all kinds of ways to get more hot peppers and hot pepper products in your diet. How hot the pepper depends on the variety and your willingness to explore new levels on the Scoville Scale.

Want to feel fuller longer? Sure, there are some low-calorie fruits and veggies that can fill you up without packing on the extra pounds, but there are also some spices that can fill you up with an extra dose of flavor. That’s, of course, good news if you want to lose weight but you also don’t want to give up on all the taste.
One of the best things you may want to try adding to mealtime is capsaicin.
That’s the active ingredient in chili peppers that makes them so hot, and cayenne peppers are a good source. Some nutritionists believe capsaicin may help stimulate a receptor in your digestive tract, which leads to a feeling of fullness. It’s possible consuming capsaicin may also increase the number of calories you burn on a daily basis. That’s, of course, great news if you love eating hot peppers or using hot pepper products to flavor your meals. The capsaicin not only adds in some extra flavor at the time, but it may also help you avoid overeating later on.
There are some other spices that do a good job, too.
It’s believed ginger may help reduce hunger pains and control your appetite. You can usually just keep fresh ginger in the refrigerator, but you can also try using dried ginger and sprinkling it in everything from baked goods to yogurt, oatmeal, tea, or smoothies. Another option is fenugreek. Studies have shown it may possibly lead to the consumption of fewer calories and it may help you feel fuller longer, too. One more option is green tea EGCG. It has a lot of health benefits, including reducing hunger and reducing calories.

How hot peppers may help with hair loss

Health Benefits
<sr:tags>capsaicin cream, hair loss, Health Benefits, Mad Dog 357 Hot Sauce</sr:tags>
Brenna Lindsey

<sr:image>https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0363/5131/1916/articles/how-hot-peppers-may-help-with-hair-loss-530114.jpg?v=1654702739</sr:image>
It seems like we’re constantly hearing about more and more health benefits tied to hot peppers.
But one of the latest benefits may have to do with battling hair loss. Researchers in China recently looked at using a treatment made up of capsaicin, curcumin and piperine on certain people with conditions commonly tied to hair loss. Capsaicin, of course, is naturally found in hot chili peppers, while piperine is the chemical in black peppers and curcumin is the compound found in turmeric. Researchers wanted to know if using these three things together would be just as effective as minoxidil. That’s the conventional treatment used on people with alopecia areata, which is a common skin disease that leads to hair loss. Millions of people in the US suffer from it, but it’s not completely understood.
In the past, researchers have looked at using capsaicin, curcumin and piperine individually to combat hair loss.
When used topically, capsaicin seems to improve blood circulation, stimulate the scalp, and promote hair growth, but this time researchers wanted to use all three together and compare the results. They took 60 patients with alopecia areata already and broke them into two groups. The first group used a mixture of capsaicin, curcumin and piperine twice a day. The other group used the conventional treatment of minoxidil once a day. After three months, they compared the two groups and their results.
Researchers found there wasn’t much variation and change between the two groups.
They also found that the hair growth rate was pretty similar and that both types of treatment seemed to work for those with the condition. They were not able to determine whether the new mix was any more effective than the conventional treatment. The study was also limited because it was only used on a short-term basis. Still, the study may show yet another benefit for hot peppers and capsaicin.

Fighting arthritis pain with capsaicin

Health Benefits
<sr:tags>Capsaicin, Capsaicin Cream for Arthritis, Mad Dog 357 Hot Sauce, natural pain relief peppers</sr:tags>
Brenna Lindsey

<sr:image>https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0363/5131/1916/articles/fighting-arthritis-pain-with-capsaicin-395434.jpg?v=1654702733</sr:image>
There are plenty of health benefits that come from consuming hot chili peppers and capsaicin.
Capsaicin is, of course, the naturally occurring compound found in hot peppers that makes them so hot. There are also some products out there that tend to help with things like joint pain, including some topical products that contain capsaicin. That’s one of the more common ingredients when it comes to battling pain relief in the form of topical lotions, creams, balms, and salves. Capsaicin is thought to help block pain receptors. Using a topical product containing things like menthol or camphor can help distract you from the pain with either a cooling or warming sensation.
Those are a few of the options, but there are some other options too when it comes to arthritis pain relief.
It's common to turn to over-the-counter drugs like Advil, Motrin, or Aleve to help deal with the pain, as well. That’s usually just a temporary fix though, and not a long-term solution to fighting the pain. Some people with pain from arthritis also turn to prescription medication, like corticosteroid injections or prescription strength nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Still, some find they can get at least a little relief from simply using a warm or cold compress. You could also try soaking in a warm bath, taking a swim, or taking a hot shower.
In terms of a capsaicin cream, it could take a couple of weeks to feel any relief from your arthritis pain.
You may want to talk it over with your doctor to see if it’s the best solution to your pain. If you use it, it’s probably a good idea to make sure you thoroughly wash your hands after handling any topical cream or product that contains capsaicin. You certainly don’t want to end up accidentally getting capsaicin in your eyes.

Why you may want to pass on a spicy first date

Health Benefits
<sr:tags></sr:tags>
David Ashley

<sr:image>https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0363/5131/1916/articles/why-you-may-want-to-pass-on-a-spicy-first-date-937921.jpg?v=1650904659</sr:image>
A first date can be nerve-wracking, but there’s good reason to keep things from getting too spicy.
It turns out spicy food is one of the absolute worse things you can eat on a first date. At least, that’s according to a poll of thousands of adults tasked with identifying some of the top foods to avoid on a first date. When it comes to the top 20 foods to avoid, people in the survey chose spicy curry as number one, so the first date is probably not the night to try out something new on the scoville scale. Other specific things they suggested avoiding on a first date included chicken wings, fajitas, burritos, tacos, and stew.

There’s obviously a time and place for spicy food, but it may not always be right for the first date.

It wasn’t just spicy hot food that made the list. Lots of people suggested you not eat noodles or spaghetti, simply for the mess factor. That was also the case with ribs and corn on the cob. It’s hard enough trying to impress someone new when you’re also worried about spilling your food or slurping your food. Most people surveyed felt it made sense to choose the least messy selection on the menu on a date, especially on a first date. There are all kinds of things that can go wrong on a date, and you probably don’t want spilled food to be one of them. Those surveyed also put the axe to oysters, sushi, and seafood. As for some of the best things to eat on a first date, most people chose something simple like a chicken dish. So, what about cooking for someone new? Many of those surveyed said it would make them nervous, but if they did cook, they’d probably make something easy and quick. Of course, about one in 10 people in the survey said they’ve purchased take-out food before and tried to pass it off as their own.

Kids are notorious for liking a certain type of food one day, then refusing to even try it the next. It’s nothing new, even people who are parents right now probably have memories of being forced to sit at the kitchen table until they finished their food. It’s tough to get kids to try new things, but it’s possible to make mealtime a bit more diverse, and even kickstart a lifelong love of spicy food if you start early.
Some experts suggest letting your kids help prepare the meal.

This may help spark their curiosity. Another tip is to give kids choices to help present different types of tastes and textures. If you want your kid to share your love for spicy food, you may want to try adding just a little bit of spice now and be patient about adding more seasonings. You probably don’t want to overwhelm their taste buds with too much heat, so stay away from anything high on the hot pepper scale. Instead, start small with things like cumin, basil, cinnamon, and mint. This way the meal won’t be so bland. Instead, it will give them at least a small taste of flavor. You can also try adding just a bit of paprika to something you know they’ll already eat, like macaroni and cheese. If you overdo it, your child might start refusing certain items altogether. If this happens, you’re once again left trying to figure out how to force your child to eat. If you let them make some decisions by offering up a few key choices, they’ll be able to try new foods on their terms. Slowing down the pace helps your child feel more comfortable and makes it a bit easier for parents at mealtime, too.

Not only can chili peppers help with a host of health-related issues, but they can also help specifically target gut health. Previous studies have already show capsaicin, the compound found in hot peppers that makes them so hot, can benefit a regular diet. Capsaicin has some anti-inflammatory benefits and has been shown to help protect against obesity. In one of the latest studies, researchers found consuming capsaicin made it possible to alter short-chain fatty acid levels and gut microbial structure.
Using an in vitro model of the human gut, researchers combined NextGen sequencing and metabolomics.
They found regularly consuming capsaicin changed the gut’s microbial community structure. When it’s possible to increase the diversity, scientists say it likely leads to better health. A decrease, on the other hand, in this type of gut microbial diversity is sometimes associated with illnesses such as type 2 diabetes. Researchers believe changes in the gut could be what’s to credit for the health benefits you get when you consume capsaicin. Capsaicin, of course, is naturally found in hot chili peppers. The higher the concentration, the higher the pepper ranks on the scoville heat scale. Apart from just the health benefits, capsaicin is often used to flavor food and sometimes used to mask the taste of food. It’s also been used for medicinal reasons. In the past, capsaicin’s been associated with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-hypertensive effects. It additionally appears to have some association with lower obesity and lower cholesterol. So, the next time you’re thinking about adding more flavor to meal or snack time, you may want to take a look at one of the many choices when it comes to hot peppers. Your body, and especially your gut, may thank you.

The key to a healthy lifestyle from this point forward depends, in part, on what you eat. That’s why there are some dos and don’ts when it comes to eating after weight loss surgery. Even before surgery occurred your doctor probably had you on some type of diet and offered up some healthy-eating tips.
This helped your body prepare for surgery, and likely helped put you on the path to a healthier future.

Right after surgery, you’ll probably be on a strict liquid diet for about two weeks. This means consuming things like gelatin, sugar-free popsicles, water, and broth. You’ll then be able to move on to protein shakes. About five weeks out from surgery you’ll want to start focusing on getting more protein in your diet. You won’t want highly processed foods or high-sugar foods. You’ll also want to cut out caffeine and carbonated drinks. Instead, you’ll want to fill up with more veggies. Unfortunately, you’ll probably want to at least reduce spicy food for now until your body gets used to the new diet, so avoid anything on the hot scale. At this point, it’s important to follow through on a nutrition plan. Pay attention to when you feel hungry, and when you feel full. This will help you better understand your body’s needs. Also, make sure you’re staying active and you have a good support system pushing you to achieve your weight goals. One of the most important things is to stay hydrated. Try filling up a 64-ounce container of water and drinking it throughout the day. Dehydration can lead to constipation. If you’re feeling abdominal cramping or nausea, you may be consuming too much sugar. Of course, if you’re having trouble losing weight or gaining weight, you’ll want to talk to your doctor.

If you’ve ever felt the true “burn” of a pepper high on the Scoville Scale, it’s unmistakable. Water won’t help the situation, but there are five quick ways to save yourself from the burning sensation. You probably don’t even need to go shopping, because it’s likely you already have some, or even all of these items in your kitchen. DairyThe first oblivious choice for counteracting the burn of hot peppers is dairy. Milk, ice cream, sour cream or yogurt are all good choices after eating spicy food.

The casein found in dairy products is able to neutralize the capsaicin found in hot peppers, and your mouth starts to cool off.

SugarSugar can also help with the burn of hot peppers and spicy food. Try either dissolving a teaspoon of sugar in your mouth or a little bit of honey when the pain gets to be too much.RiceThere’s a good reason why some spicy hot foods are served with a side of rice. The starch in rice helps absorb capsaicin, which can also help cool things down.Olive oilThe fat in olive oil helps with the burn, and it’s not just for your mouth. If you touch hot peppers with your bare hands, which we don’t necessarily recommend doing, you can try rubbing the oil on your hands to remove some of the sharpness. If you don’t, you could unintentionally end up rubbing your eyes or your face and spreading the painful burn around. LemonFinally, you can always try a small slice of lemon. You don’t need the entire thing, just cut some off and put it in your mouth to help neutralize the burning sensation.

You want to start off the day right so you’re not constantly hungry between meals. If you feel like you’ve been in a rut trying to find something new, but also fulfilling, there are some great choices to mix it up a little. Some people like to combine beans with their eggs, but the problem is both are packed with protein. It’s sometimes hard for your body to break down beans, and too much protein makes the meal that much more difficult to digest.
Mixing eggs and beans may taste good in the beginning, but may cause some bloating and indigestion later on.
Spicy foods and pepper are also common additives. While we all know how great hot peppers and hot sauces can make food taste, sometimes when you add them to eggs it also causes a bit of indigestion. You may feel a little heartburn and it may irritate your esophagus, too. If you just can’t make it through mealtime without the extra spice, you may want to limit the amount of heat you add to eggs and not start too high on the pepper heat scale. You could also try out different amounts to see what works the best. Some people don’t have good results when they combine dairy with eggs, either. One thing that does work particularly well with eggs for most people is to mix in a non-starchy vegetable. In this case, think about adding some green beans, mushrooms, broccoli, or leafy greens to your eggs. It makes the meal a bit healthier, helps fill you up, plus all of these foods are good for you, too. Remember, there’s no clear-cut answer when it comes to the perfect breakfast but trying out a few different recipes may just help you come up with the perfect match to start your day right.

Their mouth is “burning” or it feels like their mouth is “on fire” from eating spicy food. But is there any truth to it, or is it all in your head? According to several publications, that burning sensation doesn’t mean you’re actually burning your mouth or burning your tongue. Instead, it’s just a feeling you get from eating the capsaicin found in hot peppers.
When the chemical compound comes into contact with neurotransmitters in your mouth, you start feeling a burning sensation.
The truth is, your tongue can’t actually taste heat. Instead, the nerve receptors in your tongue are sensing heat, and they’re sending off a warning. You could get this reaction even if you truly enjoy what you’re eating. While some pepper lovers will tell you they eat spicy food for the taste alone, some researchers believe certain people enjoy spicy peppers because of the endorphins released when they eat them. Others choose hot peppers and spicy food for the multiple health benefits.
That’s right, spicy food can really be good for your body.
It’s been shown in the past that spicy food can help speed up your metabolism and reduce inflammation. Eating the hot stuff could also lengthen your lifespan, potentially fight off cancer and help kill off harmful bacteria. These health benefits are just a few of the good reasons to reach for more hot peppers at mealtime. Whether you choose a pepper that’s a bit lower on the hot scale, somewhere in the middle of the pepper heat scale, or you’re ready to start really experimenting with the Scoville chart, there are plenty of great reasons to incorporate more hot peppers and spicy food into your diet. Just don’t be alarmed if you feel the burn of hot peppers from time to time.

That’s especially true when it comes to your last meal of the day. Lots of grownups say they have trouble getting to sleep at night. Sleep’s important because a good night of rest helps your body rejuvenate and stay healthy. The National Sleep Foundation suggests adults get anywhere from seven to nine hours of sleep each night. But what if you can’t seem to fall asleep when you want to?

It turns out, there are certain foods you should and shouldn’t eat late at night.
As for some of the best things to eat before bedtime, try bananas and cherries, nuts, or fish. You can also eat hummus, avocados and even, surprisingly, dark chocolate. If you love a nice glass of red wine late at night, that’s not a bad choice, either. The skin of the grapes used for red wine contains melatonin, which helps you fall asleep. Asian foods like miso soup and edamame are also good choices because the magnesium in them helps your muscles relax, making it a bit easier to fall asleep. Of course, you don’t want to overdo it on any of these things, but in moderation, all can be good choices.Unfortunately, there are also some things that aren’t the best choices late at night. If you love hot sauce, you may want to use it a bit earlier in the day. Sure, it’s fun to try out new flavors on the pepper scale, but consuming hot sauce can raise your body’s temperature. That’s why it’s not such a great choice if you’re trying to get some rest. You may find it a bit shocking, but apples aren’t always a great choice before bedtime, either. That’s because they’re packed with natural sugar. Sure, apples are good for you, but even natural sugar can keep you awake at night.

Or at the very least somewhere in our kitchen. It’s everywhere. In tiny packets with your takeout meals, and on restaurant tables, too. It’s so common you probably don’t even think twice about adding a shake of salt and pepper at mealtime to up the spiciness scale. But have you considered trading out your black pepper shaker for white peppercorns? White pepper isn’t quite as commonplace as black pepper, but it has its own unique flavor.
Surprisingly, both peppers come from the very same berries
But you wouldn’t know it by looking at them. You get black pepper from unripe berries. They’re dried until their skins turn black, which helps give them that unmistakable black pepper taste and aroma. White peppercorns are fully ripened berries. They’ve been soaked in water long enough to ferment. The outer skin of the berry is removed before its dried. That’s why one looks black and the other one looks white. Surprisingly, they also taste different. Because the white peppercorns have their outer skin removed and they’re dried in a different way, white and black peppercorns end up slightly different.
White peppercorns tend to be milder, earthier and less pungent.
You’ll often find white pepper used in Asian, Mexican and Indian dishes. This doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t use white pepper for other foods, it’s up to you. The dish will likely taste a little different, but that’s what some people like about white peppercorns. Oftentimes, people use white pepper when they make something light in color so they’re able to maintain the overall hue without adding in black specks. There are health benefits, too. White pepper contains essential minerals like iron, dietary fiber and manganese. It’s also said to help with bone health and digestion.

You may want to reach for some extra spice at mealtime. Numerous studies out there point to the need for reducing your salt intake, especially as you age. Having too much salt in your diet can increase your risk of a stroke or even a heart attack. If you’re worried about losing out on the extra flavor, there may be a simple solution.
Researchers out of Washington say,
It may be possible for older adults to avoid salt by adding a pinch of spice. They involved a few dozen older people in their study, which took a closer look at salt perception. In the study, participants were given a white sauce that contained different amounts of salt, as well as some with added seasonings and spices. They found people had a hard time distinguishing between high sodium and low sodium foods when they added in a small amount of chipotle seasoning. They also tried adding things like coarse ground pepper, garlic powder and basil leaves, but did not end up with the same results as chipotle seasoning. In most cases, people were able to easily tell the difference.
They wanted to study older adults
Because your sense of smell and taste weaken as you age. When people are no longer able to sense salty flavors as easily, they may end up sprinkling on too much salt. This, in turn, could lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Researchers say they’re already planning another, larger study involving different levels of salt, as well as some other spice and herb combinations. For now, though, the study shows extra spice may be a possible solution for those who want to add more flavor to their meals, but not necessarily overdo it with extra salt. It seems beyond just extra flavor, tapping into the spice scale could have all kinds of benefits.

But do you have the tolerance to handle the heat? For most of us, it takes some getting used to all the intense flavors. This means building up your tolerance over time, and not just expecting to be able to start at the top of the Scoville Scale right away. But how do you build your tolerance to the extreme heat of some of the hottest peppers on the planet? Some of it takes time, some of it means retraining your brain.
Let’s explain that a little more.
When you eat hot peppers, the capsaicin stimulates your body’s pain receptors. In other words, you think the food is hot, so you react accordingly. If you’re able to push through the perception of heat, capsaicin eventually releases hormones that make you feel good. But you need to get to that point. Some spicy food aficionados say to retrain your brain they don’t drink anything after eating spicy food until the “pain” subsides. Water won’t help anyways because capsaicin is oil-based. If you just can’t handle it, you can try drinking milk. A protein found in milk helps keep capsaicin from binding to pain receptors on your tongue.
Spice lovers say:
You can build your tolerance slowly over time by eating spicy food regularly, increasing the heat every time. Maybe start with some jalapeno slices or start adding a bit of mild or medium hot sauce to everything you eat. Others suggest adding a new, hotter pepper variety every week until you build up to the desired level on the hotness scale. This takes time, of course, but the rewards in the end are worth it. While you’re not starting at the top, you are able to savor different Scoville levels and pepper varieties along the way to help determine which level on the spice scale is right for you.

You may just need to lower your thermostat or kick off an extra blanket or two. It could also be some type of medical condition or even be tied to your last meal. Regular sweating is normal.
Unless you’re waking up drenched in sweat night after night, the experts say there’s probably not too much to worry about.
Simply adjusting the thermostat by a couple of degrees or removing extra bedding might do the trick. If you’ve recently come down with a virus or some sort of infection, though, that could be the cause. There are also some more serious diseases that could be to blame, or the night sweats could be tied to a medication. Sometimes it can happen even with over-the-counter pain meds like aspirin. If it seems concerning, it’s always best to talk to your doctor and rule out anything serious. Again, night sweats do happen from time to time and sometimes all it takes to solve the problem is to make some simple adjustments to sleep time. Lose some extra layers and try turning down the thermostat at night.
You can also make some adjustments to your lifestyle. Try moving your workout to a time a little earlier in the day. You can also try moving up your last big meal of the day. While spicy food tastes great any time of day, eating it too close to bedtime can sometimes, unfortunately, lead to sleep problems like night sweats. A heavy meal slows down digestion. Also, sometimes going to sleep too soon after eating spicy food high on the hot pepper scale causes things like acid reflux, which again interferes with your sleep. You don’t have to give up what you love, just be smart about when you eat it.

You’ve probably heard of athletes loading up on carbs before a big race, but what if eating chili peppers could help you run longer without getting tired?
That’s exactly what some recent research suggests could happen.
We already know that eating spicy food can help speed up your metabolism, but it turns out the extra spice may also keep you from getting tired easily. Researchers say they found the capsaicin in hot peppers appears to help combat fatigue. When runners eat it, it seems they may be able to run for a longer period of time without feeling tired. It has to do with your pain receptors. Just like capsaicin has shown promise for its pain-fighting abilities in the past, it seems it may be also able to desensitize other types of pain, like exercise fatigue. While more research is likely needed, the news is promising to those who enjoy exercising and want to improve their performance. Even if you’re not a championship athlete, eating hot peppers may help you attain your other exercise goals.
If it sounds appealing, remember you probably don’t want to start at the top of the game, or in this case, the top of the Scoville heat scale. Just like you wouldn’t start a new exercise program by doing a marathon, you don’t want to start your pepper journey by trying out the hottest chilis on the pepper scale first. Aim to start lower on the scale, then work your way up to hotter and hotter peppers, much as you would if you were exercising by starting slow, then adding more and more miles until you hit your comfort zone. Not everyone was built for spicy food. Remember, it takes practice to reach perfection.

Reaching for some cayenne pepper can be a great, healthy choice. In fact, there are six good reasons why cayenne pepper is likely one of the world’s healthiest spices.
Immunity boost
First of all, cayenne peppers can help boost your immunity. This means they may be able to help fight off illnesses and infections.
Circulation
The capsaicin in cayenne peppers can also help with blood circulation. This is because eating it can help raise your body’s temperature.
Pain
If you’re in need of pain relief, you may want to try capsaicin, too. The fiery hot compound in peppers can help block inflammation and potentially block the nerve signals that send pain signals to your brain. You can try adding in some cayenne pepper to your food at mealtime or you could also take it as a supplement.
Arthritis
If you have arthritis, you may be able to use capsaicin to your advantage, as well. Just like it helps with certain types of pain, some say capsaicin can help with arthritis. It’s likely that the capsaicin is able to reduce inflammation of the joints, which is what causes swelling and pain with arthritis.
Acne
If you’re dealing with unwanted acne, you may be able to use capsaicin, too. Some studies have shown promise in the topical application of capsaicin to help reduce acne and clear up pores. When it comes to capsaicin, it sounds like it’s better to use it in small doses over a longer period of time. Some believe this is a smarter alternative to using one large dose in one setting. It’s also easier to handle the fiery hot of the heat scale. In other words, try a little cayenne pepper with your next meal. You’ll thank us for the taste, and it may possibly even help boost your health.

The good news is you don’t necessarily have to give up the food you love the most just to be healthier. Some of your favorite foods may simply be good for you. Take, for example, cayenne pepper. Not only does it taste great and give a real boost of flavor at mealtime, but the red pepper is full of health benefits. Here are five healthy reasons to include more cayenne pepper in 2022:
Heart health
Cayenne peppers can help your heart, and we’re not just talking about your “love” for hot peppers. It turns out, the capsaicin in cayenne peppers can help with inflammation by lowering your blood pressure. It may also be that using cayenne pepper to season your food instead of salt may be a real advantage for your health.
Weight loss
Cayenne peppers may also help with your weight. When you eat something spicy it helps boost your metabolism and you burn calories. A spicy diet also makes you feel fuller, so you’re less likely to reach for extra snacks.
Digestion
You may think eating spicy foods and choosing peppers off the Scoville Scale will lead to an upset stomach and heartburn, but it turns out for many people cayenne pepper is pretty good for digestion. Eating it may actually help your stomach break down food. Cayenne peppers may also help boost good gut bacteria.
Congestion
If you feel like you have a stuffy head, you may want to try clearing up the congestion with spicy peppers. In some cases, it’s been known to help with headaches, too.
Source of antioxidants/compounds
Cayenne peppers are also great when it comes to the antioxidants and plant compounds that help promote good health. Antioxidants found in the peppers naturally can help protect our cells and potentially help protect us from diseases.

There are several ways to add more heat to your meal, no matter whether you’re looking for a little boost of flavor or a mouthwatering experience on the Scoville Scale.
Depending on your preference, there are plenty of pepper products out there to get the job done. That’s a good thing, because spicy food not only tastes great, but it’s often good for you.
In fact, there are at least six good reasons to eat more spicy food that are tied directly to better health.

Better heart health

Capsaicin is the compound found in hot peppers that makes them so spicy hot. Capsaicin can also help your heart. It’s been tied to lower blood pressure and it’s been shown to lower bad cholesterol, which is what increases the risk of heart disease.

Cancer fighter

Some research also suggests capsaicin can help protect you from cancer by slowing down or even destroying cancer cells.

Metabolism boost

If you want to lose weight and boost your metabolism, capsaicin may help with that, too. While you can’t go overboard on junk food, adding in some spicy food can help your body burn more calories and burn more energy. Eating it may also help you feel fuller longer.

Gut health

Capsaicin may also help keep your gut healthy because its anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant.

Depression fighter

If you just want to feel better overall, capsaicin can also help with depression. When you consume capsaicin, your body releases endorphins. In turn, it makes you feel good.

Pain relief

Intermittent fasting is a good way to achieve fat loss. It helps restrict calories, reduce snacking and regulate the body’s natural cycles. But when you eat is just part of the equation. It also matters what you eat, and that’s where fat burners come in. A good fat burner can do a number of things including help improve lean body mass, fight against cravings and accelerate your metabolism. Don’t be fooled, though. Some products out there claim to be fat burners, but they’re loaded with things like caffeine. Keep in mind the old adage; if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
There’s no magic solution that doesn’t require some effort on your part.
You still need daily exercise and a mix of fiber, lean proteins, fruits and veggies, and good fats in your diet. You also need to be getting enough sleep and consuming lots of water. That’s especially important when you’re fasting. Training on an empty stomach helps you burn fat. Fat burners help make sure you’re also preserving muscle. That brings us to some of the top fat burning supplements out there. One of the key ingredients to look for its none other than cayenne pepper. It’s a superfood for a reason. The capsaicin in the peppers is what makes them so hot, but it’s also known to reduce intake and suppress appetite.
Adding some cayenne pepper to your diet, therefore, helps reduce caloric intake and it also increases energy expenditure. Piperine is something found in black peppers. It’s known to increase your metabolism with thermogenesis. Natural ingredients can help your body naturally break down fat. It’s just another reason you can’t go wrong adding more hot peppers to mealtime and taking a journey up the Scoville pepper scale.

The spices to use to give your metabolism a boost

Health Benefits
<sr:tags>Capsaicin, chili health benefits, Metabolism</sr:tags>
Brenna Lindsey

<sr:image>https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0363/5131/1916/articles/the-spices-to-use-to-give-your-metabolism-a-boost-218792.jpg?v=1640626117</sr:image>
If you want to give your metabolism a boost, you may want to take another look at your spice rack.
It seems some common spices you may already have in your home right now could help give your metabolism the boost you’ve been searching for. Some spices are packed with health benefits, including some that may have actual benefits when it comes to helping to promote weight loss.
Three top contenders are cinnamon, ginger and capsaicin.
Capsaicin is, of course, the active component of chili peppers. As for capsaicin and cinnamon, both are said to help burn calories, boost weight loss and help people fight food cravings. Cinnamon, in particular, is packed with antioxidants. Compounds in cinnamon help reduce inflammation and help stimulate the immune system. Cinnamon also appears to help boost metabolism. Another option is ginger. It may help with gut health, plus it helps us feel fuller and some say using it may slightly increase the number of calories we burn. Experts say it can also help boost your metabolism.
But what about something truly spicy?
If that’s what you crave most of all, you’re in luck. Found in chili peppers, cayenne pepper, curry powder, chili powder, red pepper flakes and paprika, capsaicin is said to have a lot of health benefits, itself. Some nutrition specialists say it may help burn fat, reduce appetite, increase metabolism and decrease food intake. That’s all great news if you’re searching for an easy way to give your metabolism a boost. Luckily, there are all kinds of way to introduce capsaicin to your diet, with lots of hot pepper products and hot sauces to taste and experience. But could adjusting what you eat at mealtime make a difference? In particular, could adding some extra spice to your diet help lower the risk of high blood pressure? That’s an interesting concept to test out, because herbs and spices have been used in different medicines for centuries. According to some research, the medicinal properties of certain spices and herbs can help decrease your blood pressure. Other reports suggest people are less likely to have to deal with hypertension if they eat spicy foods. That’s obviously good news for those who love spicy food and taste-testing their way up the Scoville Scale. Countless reports suggest eating extra spice not only helps flavor your food but may also bring about some real help benefits. It seems some spices may also help with your blood pressure.
Of course, if you have high blood pressure you really should make a visit to your doctor.
They may want you to use medicine to help bring it down. However, it’s possible to help manage hypertension by making some easy diet changes. Foods high in salt and saturated fats probably aren’t what you should be looking for. Instead, consider adding in some healthy fruits and veggies, as well as some healthy fats. The way you prepare your food can also make a difference. Nutritionists say using certain herbs and spices when cooking instead of salt will likely help with high blood pressure. Using them may also make you less likely to add salt at the table because the food is already flavorful.
Turmeric is a good choice because it has anti-inflammatory substances and its rich with antioxidants. From headache help to wrinkles, here are the top 10 benefits:
1.Weight loss
To begin with, jalapenos can help if you’re trying to lose weight. A diet high in capsaicin, which is what gives peppers that extra kick, can help boost your metabolism. A higher metabolism gives you a better chance at losing weight.
2. Digestion
Along the same lines, it may also help with digestion. It’s said capsaicin helps food move through your digestive system at a faster rate. This could mean less of a problem with bloating and indigestion.
3. Immune system boost
Spicy food can also help give your immune system a boost. This could mean lowering your chance of upper respiratory tract infections, like colds.
4. Fresher breath
Jalapenos can additionally help promote fresh breath. When you consume capsaicin, it decreases the fluid in your mouth. Less saliva likely means fresher breath, because excess saliva often leads to bad breath.
5. Wrinkles
Hot peppers could also mean fewer wrinkles. Some capsaicin creams are used to treat signs of aging, including wrinkles.
6. Healing wounds
Speaking of your skin, capsaicin has antibacterial properties. This can be helpful in preventing infections and sometimes even healing wounds.
7. Blood clots
Another bonus is that spicy foods, like hot peppers, may be able to help protect against blood clots. Capsaicin can prevent platelets from sticking together, which can sometimes lead to clotting in your arteries and veins.
8. Relief from muscle aches
Eating jalapenos may actually help relieve some muscle aches, too. You could see a dulling of the pain or even an absence of pain after eating hot things.
9. Pregnancy help
Pregnant women may also benefit from jalapenos. It’s said they may help prevent morning sickness, stop diarrhea and help with digestion.
10. Migraine help
Some scientists also think capsaicin can help with migraines. Some think it could be helpful in treating or even preventing migraines in the future. For all of these benefits and more, you may want to think about taking a journey up the pepper heat scale by incorporating more hot peppers and hot pepper products into your diet.

How to boost your heart health with chili peppers

Health Benefits
<sr:tags>Capsaicin, chili health benefits, healthy choice, healthy eating</sr:tags>
Brenna Lindsey

<sr:image>https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0363/5131/1916/articles/how-to-boost-your-heart-health-with-chili-peppers-856249.jpg?v=1640284124</sr:image>
If you eat a lot of chili peppers you may be on the track to better health
Not only do they taste great, but they may also help boost your heart. The American Heart Association recently announced people who regularly consume chili peppers are 26-percent less likely to die from heart disease. Another report found adults in the US who eat the most chili peppers have a 13-percent lower risk of things like cardiovascular disease compared to those who don’t eat any at all.
There’s really no clear number when it comes to how many chili peppers you have to eat to get the benefits
However, it’s said capsaicin, the compound in chili peppers that gives them all the heat, may reduce inflammation. Yet another study found people who eat spicy food may be craving and consuming less salt, which may help control things like blood pressure. Eating spicy food sometimes tricks the brain into thinking you’re full and increases your metabolic rate. Essentially it may help cut down on the calories you consume. As an added bonus to some of the other health benefits, the American Heart Association also found those who regularly consume chili peppers have a 23-percent lower chance of dying from cancer.
If you want to start experimenting with chili peppers but you’re not really sure where to start, you may want to begin on the lower end of the Scoville pepper chart. The amount of capsaicin in a pepper is measured in Scoville heat units. Those on the higher end of the spice scale have the highest SHU, while those on the lower end of the scale are a bit tamer. Peppers like the Poblano and Anaheim sit pretty low on the scale. The Habanero and Scotch Bonnet are considerably higher. A recent study took aim at better understanding visceral fat. That’s the fat that accumulates in the hollow space in your abdominal cavity where your intestines and your liver are found. When this type of belly fat builds up, it increases your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The association between visceral fat and spicy food intake isn’t well understood, so researchers tried to gain a better understanding of the two by studying a group of people in China.Researchers divided them up by how often they ate spicy food. Some never ate spicy food, some only ate it only once or twice a week. On the other end of the scale, some ate spicy food up to six or seven times a day/week. Researchers found visceral fat increased with how frequently the subjects ate. It was mediated by higher fat energy intake with those who consumed spicy food more frequently. To burn belly fat, you ideally need to burn more calories than you consume.
You also need to eat the right kinds of food.
This means adding in more fruits and vegetables to your diet, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding adding extra sugar and salt. In other words, a balanced diet is always a good idea, as is adding in some exercise for a healthy body. Of course, there are other studies out there that suggest the many benefits of spicy food, including some showing eating spicy food helps speed up your metabolism and possibly keep off the extra pounds. Like anything else, it’s probably best to eat your spicy food in moderation. Luckily, there are all kinds of way to add a little extra spice to your meal. Your comfort level on the pepper scale is entirely up to you.

A diet rich in chili pepper can effectively control many body ailments. Chili peppers have been around for ages. For instance, it is amazing to know that in the US, chili pepper has been a part of diet ever since 7500 BC. However, but it is only now that their health benefits are being increasingly recognized by modern diet experts. The positive impact of chili peppers on your health has been listed below in detail. Read the article to know the many benefits of consuming chili pepper.
Health Benefits Of Eating Chili Peppers
Studies have established that chili peppers have pain-relieving properties. Their consumption provides relief from migraine and sinus headaches. Chili pepper contains a chemical substance called Capsaicin, which controls pain transmission to the brain.Capsaicin, present in chili pepper, assists in combating nasal congestion, by stimulating secretions that help clear mucus from your throat. The antibacterial properties of chili pepper help fight chronic sinus infections.
According to some studies, the capsaicin in chili pepper helps in killing prostate cancer cells. Their pungent heat also obstructs the spread of prostate cancer cells.Chili pepper contains high quantities of Vitamin A, C, and also bioflavonoids. These nutrients work together to strengthen blood vessels, making them more elastic and enhancing their ability to adjust to blood pressure fluctuations.
Chili peppers, being naturally hot, make us sweat, which results in fluid loss from the body. This helps in reducing the overall blood volume, though temporarily. As such, potential blood clotting incidents are significantly reduced.
Chili pepper acts as a potent anti-inflammatory agent. It inhibits those substances in the body that are associated with inflammatory processes. Studies expect that capsaicin may well become a treatment for arthritis, psoriasis and diabetic neuropathy one day.
A study conducted by the Duke University (Durham, North Carolina) puts forward that chili pepper may be effective against inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It can help in killing bacteria such as H. pylori and thereby, assist in preventing stomach ulcers.
Chili peppers have also been associated with fat-burning properties. Thermogenics like capsaicin pump up the metabolism of the body and stimulate its ability to burn fat by generating heat.
It is a little surprising to know that a typical chili pepper contains more vitamin C than an orange. Also, the high content of beta carotene in chili pepper makes it anti-infectious. These nutrients are essential for the health of mucus membranes lining the nasal passages, lungs, intestinal tract, and urinary tract. This helps in building the body’s defense against pathogens.
Eating chili peppers can reduce risks of hyperinsulinemia (high insulin), a disorder identified with type 2 diabetes. Researches have shown that a meal containing chili pepper reduces the amount of insulin required by the body to lower blood sugar levels. Regular consumption can bring insulin requirements further down.
CautionThe capsaicin in chili peppers can irritate or cause a burning sensation in your eyes or hands.Chili oil can be sticky and therefore, it is important to be cautious about touching your eyes after handling the peppers.Cooking TipsWear gloves while cutting chili peppers. Naked hands, when touched to the skin after handling chili peppers, can cause a burning sensation.Chili peppers can be added while the food is being cooked. In countries like India, people eat chili pepper raw and uncooked as well.Chili pepper can also be used in a variety of dishes, for the purpose of garnishing.

It turns out there are plenty of “healthy” reasons to love the fiery flavor of turning up the heat on mealtime. Not only does spicy food taste great, but it turns out it also comes with a number of health benefits.
That’s good news for your health and your taste buds.

While some people prefer bland, tasteless food, other people seem to thrive on the extra spice. If you’re one of them, you’re in luck! Spicy food can do everything from burn extra calories to help keep your heart healthy. It turns out capsaicin, the compound responsible for all the heat in chili peppers, can help lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. Capsaicin also helps your body burn energy and break down fat. Because spicy food seems to help your body burn extra calories, eating a healthy dose of spicy food may also help you control your weight. If you want even more proof, it seems eating spicy food may also help lower inflammation in your GI tract. It’s easy to find ways to add some extra spice to your diet, from dabbing on a little hot sauce to using some extracts. A little often goes a long way, so you’ll probably want to start off kind of on the conservative end of things before working your way up the spice scale. We should probably mention that spicy food can’t do all the work for a healthy body. Sure, it’s a good choice, but for a healthy lifestyle you’ll also need to think about all the other “healthy” stuff you can do like staying active, controlling stress and keeping a positive outlook. As long as you’re committing to a healthy lifestyle, though, don’t pass up the opportunity to mix it up with new flavors as you enjoy your journey up the hot Scoville scale.

Many of us eat hot peppers for their flavor or simply to get an extra dose of heat, but there are plenty of health benefits when it comes to chili peppers. The compound capsaicin is what spices up hot peppers, but now a new study suggests it may have an added benefit, as well. Researchers recently looked at using a synthetic form of capsaicin to help make small cell lung cancer more responsive to treatments. Because this type of cancer is particularly aggressive, doctors usually turn to chemotherapy.
While it does treat the cancer, sometimes the tumors come back.
While true capsaicin has showed promise in fighting cancer in the past, it does have some drawbacks. Sometimes it causes a burning sensation, stomach pain or nausea. In this latest research, scientists used a synthetic capsaicin analog called arvanil. Unlike the real thing, it doesn’t seem to have any digestive side effects. When researchers used arvanil in conjunction with another ingredient they found that cancer cell activity seemed to slow down. Because of this, researchers hope it could someday prove successful in the treatment of certain cancer patients.Of course, this isn’t the first possible health benefit tied to capsaicin. In the past, genuine capsaicin’s been looked at in the treatment of topical pain, as well as to help with weight loss, diabetes and even some other forms of cancer. Apart from all of this, many of us enjoy genuine capsaicin in hot chili peppers simply for its flavor and its heat. Whether you choose a product high on the Scoville chart or a product that’s a bit lower on the pepper hotness scale, there’s nothing like the feeling of adding an extra dose of heat to one of your favorite snacks or meals. You don’t have to go overboard, either. When it comes to hot peppers, a little goes a long way.

Need a mood boost? It’s just one of the health benefits researchers say may be tied to spicing up mealtime. Researchers have discovered chili peppers may help with your mental health because capsaicin seems to have a positive effect on things like depression. Some people actually say they feel happier after eating hot peppers. It’s just one possible health benefit in a growing list of benefits that may come from eating hot peppers. In other studies, researchers have found a regular diet of chili peppers helps decrease the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. The same may go for your risk of dying from stroke.

This may be tied to the anti-inflammatory effects of capsaicin.
If that’s not enough, consider the possible dietary impact of eating hot peppers. Other research seems to suggest the capsaicin in hot peppers helps with weight loss. The addition of more spice in your diet appears to increase the rate of digestion and increase how much energy you burn. Others claim when they feel a bit under the weather, hot spicy food helps clear up their sinuses fast. Whether it’s an actual health improvement or just a mood boost, hot peppers are being closely studied for all kinds of potential benefits. It may sound a little too easy, but you can always try adding more hot peppers to your diet and see how you feel. The great news is the pepper scale varies widely, so you have plenty of opportunities to either move up the scale or down, depending on your own personal preferences for spicy food. There are a large number of products to choose from on the hot pepper scale, so you’re sure to find the right amount of spice to lift your mood, and possibly even your health.

If you’re suffering from minor aches and pains or even arthritis, you may be looking for something to soothe your troubles. There’s an over-the-counter product called Aspercreme that’s commonly used to treat things like:

Minor aches & pains
Backache
Muscle strains & sprains
Sore/pulled muscles

Aspercreme is a topical pain reliever that you use directly on your skin. While the name implies it comes only in a cream, it sometimes also comes in a spray, a gel, a patch or even a roll-on. It comes with different formulations, too. Each type has an active ingredient that helps relieve pain. The original Aspercreme contains an active ingredient similar to aspirin, but another type uses capsaicin. Of course, we all known that’s the active ingredient found in hot chili peppers. When you eat a hot pepper that’s high on the Scoville scale or use a hot pepper product, you likely immediately sense the heat. It’s a similar type of sensation with capsaicin-infused Aspercreme, except this time it slightly warms your skin.
Aspercreme with capsaicin comes in the form of a patch or a gel.

Just like hot peppers, though, you don’t want to get any Aspercreme in your eyes or your nose. You also don’t want to use a large amount of it, and you certainly don’t want to use it on skin that’s wounded, damaged or irritated in any way. When you use Aspercreme with capsaicin there are some other considerations, as well.

Wash your hands thoroughly after using it
Keep the area out of direct heat/sunlight
Stop using 1 hour before shower/bath
Don’t use it in the folds of your skin
If under 18, pregnant or nursing, talk to your doctor before using it
Don’t use more frequently than directed

If you’re dealing with chronic pain of any kind you know there are some days it just feels unbearable. Many people combat the pain by turning to prescription drugs. In the case of Painful Diabetic Neuropathy, or PDN, it’s estimated more than 95-percent of people turn to some type of medication.Unfortunately, some treatments on the market either don’t work very well or have some pretty intense side effects. The good news is, there are some emerging medical devices out there that are already showing promise in connection with PDN. Last July, the FDA approved the first capsaicin medicated patch. Called Qutenza, the 8-percent capsaicin patch is already approved for Painful Diabetic Neuropathy. Essentially, it’s a man-made version of the compound already naturally found in chili peppers. It’s not the first time capsaicin’s been used to help treat and manage pain. Sure, capsaicin gives your taste buds a real kick when you eat chili peppers and use spicy pepper products, but it turns out it also has another purpose.
Capsaicin is a known compound for helping relieve pain.

While in this case it’s being used in patches, it can also be used in gels and creams for the treatment of pain. It’s been studied for the treatment of arthritis, diabetic neuropathy, muscle pain and even potentially migraines. Other research suggest capsaicin may be able to be used to treat other health concerns, too. While it’s probably not a great idea to just grab a handful of hot peppers and cut into them with your bare skin, the capsaicin patch may be beneficial for certain painful health conditions. Of course, capsaicin medicated or not, there’s probably not any patch, cream or gel out there that can top the hotness scale of natural capsaicin.

Want to live longer? If you want to live longer, you may want to try eating more chili peppers. Sure, stuffing your belly with food isn’t probably a great idea, but in moderation it seems pepper lovers may be on to something. According to a recent study presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association, those who include hot peppers in their diet appear to have lower rates of dying from heart disease and possibly even cancer than those who either never eat chili peppers, or rarely eat them. The study looked at people in the US, Italy, Iran and China. It found an overall mortality reduction of 25-percent in chili pepper eaters, with a 26-percent reduction in the risk of dying from heart disease and a 23-percent reduction in the risk of dying from cancer.
It’s just a preliminary report, so there’s no definitive answer yet if health benefits vary between different varies of peppers.

There’s no doubt, though, that peppers are full of healthy things like vitamins A and C. Peppers are also known to contain iron, niacin, and riboflavin. While this particular study is fairly new, other studies have made their own ties between hot peppers and good health in the past, including such possible health benefits as migraine relief, improved eye health, weight loss and reduced joint pain. So, if you want to try something that not only tastes great, but may even help you live longer, add some hot peppers to your diet. When you eat a cayenne pepper, you feel fuller longer. 3. Weight lossWhen you’re able to keep your portions under control, you may start losing weight. Cayenne pepper works as a metabolism booster too, which is known to help burn excess fat.4. Metabolism boosterSpeaking of your metabolism, spicy food can actually increase your body’s temperature. That helps your body burn more calories.5. Digestion That’s just part of it. Spicy food, like the cayenne pepper, also helps aid in digestion. When you eat one, it triggers saliva production and stimulates enzyme production, which helps metabolize food.6. Blood pressureStudies have also shown promise with lowering your blood pressure. Capsaicin, the compound that makes peppers so hot, is said to help relax your blood vessels. 7. Pain reliefTopical capsaicin ointments and cremes are sometimes used to help with pain. When used successfully, they can give at least some temporary relief. 8. Inflammatory reliefAlong the same lines, capsaicin is sometimes used to treat inflammatory diseases. This includes things like shingles.9. DetoxIf you’re looking for a natural detox, cayenne peppers can help cleanse the body. It’s said that cayenne helps remove bacteria and toxins, plus it reportedly helps stimulate circulation.10. Cancer protection?Researchers are also looking at whether capsaicin can help protect against cancer cell growth.
For all of these reasons and more, it’s likely the cayenne pepper may just be one of the best things to add to your diet.

To understand how it works, we have to dial it down a notch. Let’s start with capsaicin. That’s the part of the pepper that makes hot chilis taste so very hot. When you eat a hot pepper, a receptor protein called TRPV1 is activated. It senses the heat and our blood vessels begin to relax.
Capsaicin is already known to help with minor aches and pains, but that may not be the end of it.

Several years ago, a study began looking at pain and the aging process. Naturally as you get older you report more pain. Researchers found that by genetically manipulating mice to lack TRPV1, the mice lived about 14-percent longer than other mice. By blocking the pain receptor, researchers were able to extend the lifespan of mice, and give them a relatively younger metabolism. In the same way, constantly activating the TRPV1 receptor with chilis can mimic the loss of TRPV1. Therefore, by eating capsaicin, it may be possible to help prevent metabolic decline as we age, possibly leading to increased longevity.Whether this can actually happen remains to be seen. We do know, however, that eating a diet rich in capsaicin has been shown to result in fewer metabolic problems and a lower incidence of diabetes. So, your chili addiction may not be the entire answer to longevity, but it may not hurt, either. The next time you feel like spicing up your food with some chilis high on the Scoville scale, just remember they not only make your meal taste better but may just give you a few extra years to enjoy doing what you love the most.

What’s making you sneeze? That’s what scientists want to find out, and they’re using a chili pepper compound to get some answers. Scientists at the University of Washington School of Medicine have been hard at work studying sneezing, and possible treatments. It’s no secret that pollen and dust can make us sneeze, but sometimes so can spicy food that ranks high on the heat scale. Unfortunately, when someone sneezes tens of thousands of virus-containing droplets, like those connected to COVID-19, go into the air. Because they can stay in the air for up to 10 minutes, they can also potentially infect other people.
To help slow the spread, scientists are looking for a way to control sneezing by better understanding it.
In this case, researchers exposed mice to aerosolized droplets with sneeze-producing compounds in them. One of the compounds used was capsaicin, which comes from chili peppers. Researchers found the mice were less likely to sneeze if they lacked a certain neuropeptide, NMB, which is released by neurons. They found NMB connects the respiratory center and sneeze-evoking part of the brain. They were able to use NMB to stimulate the brain and make the mice sneeze even without exposing them to capsaicin. In this particular study, the researchers were also able to show when capsaicin was used, the mice produced NMB, which sensed an irritant. The NMB was able to bind to the NMB receptor and the neurons talking to the respiratory center resulted in a sneeze.
It’s hoped this research could be used in the future to potentially help with sneezing treatments that could help fight respiratory infections. This is just one way capsaicin’s being used to help better your health in the future. Of course, the hot chili pepper compound adds a big boost of flavor to a variety of things too, and that’s a benefit we can all cheer about

The chili addiction: Why former addicts are turning to spicy foods

Health Benefits
<sr:tags>addiction</sr:tags>
David Ashley

<sr:image>https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0363/5131/1916/articles/the-chili-addiction-why-former-addicts-are-turning-to-spicy-foods-839568.jpg?v=1627497478</sr:image>
It’s tough to break an addiction, but former addicts are sometimes able to replace that “artificial” addiction with something that gives a more natural high.
Call it a chili addiction. Part of it has to do with the thrill of trying something not everyone can handle. The other part may have to do with replacing the old cravings with a new, healthier buzz.
It takes guts to try the world’s spiciest peppers, and that’s why thrill seekers find seriously spicy food so exciting.
Extremely hot peppers obviously aren’t the same as drugs, but they can give you a “thrill” without turning to something illegal. Like drugs and alcohol, some people turn to spicy foods for instant satisfaction. In fact, the feeling you get when you eat extremely spicy food can almost mimic the high from drugs and alcohol. Your head may start to feel a little buzzy and you may even feel a bit numb. When you consume capsaicin, the hot compound found in chili peppers, you instantly start to feel a burning in your mouth and sometimes even numbness throughout the rest of your body. When this happens your brain releases endorphins. Think of it like the feeling you might get if your ran a marathon, with no exercise required.People who’ve battled addiction in the past are also told how important it is to adapt to a healthier lifestyle. While doing drugs in the past may have led to binge-eating junk food, the idea now is to replace those cravings with healthier options. Topping off healthy food choices with hot sauce or cayenne pepper can help replace the need for junk food, and lead to a more natural high. While climbing the heat scale isn’t entirely the answer to fighting addiction, it can possibly help fill the void with something healthier and, of course, less dangerous.

4 ways the Scotch Bonnet Pepper can benefit your health

Health Benefits
<sr:tags>chili health benefits, Health Benefits</sr:tags>
David Ashley

<sr:image>https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0363/5131/1916/articles/4-ways-the-scotch-bonnet-pepper-can-benefit-your-health-839349.jpg?v=1626783532</sr:image>
Sure, they can help spice up your food, but there are other health benefits to eating the Scotch Bonnet Pepper. This smoky, almost fruit-like pepper is a favorite when it comes to turning up the heat at mealtime. But there are also some real health benefits to the Scotch Bonnet. In fact, there are four good, healthy reasons to start incorporating the pepper into your diet.

Weight control
The first has to do with winning the battle of the bulge. The Scotch Bonnet pepper is full of capsaicin. In the past, researchers have found capsaicin can help reduce the build-up of excess body fat. While exercise and eating healthy is the key to maintaining a healthy weight, it seems adding some Scotch Bonnet peppers at mealtime may also help.

Reduced cancer risk
Another benefit for capsaicin may be in helping to reduce the risk of cancer. It’s being studied to find out. Capsaicin found in the pepper’s flesh has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Researchers have seen some positive results with peppers when it comes to combating pancreatic, breast and bladder cancer.

Treatment of pain
If you suffer from certain types of pain, the Scotch Bonnet may help, too. Again, capsaicin is the key. It’s said the capsaicin found in Scotch Bonnet peppers may be able to help treat things like rheumatoid and osteoarthritis pain, headaches, inflammatory heat and diabetic neuropathy.

Preventing bad breath
It may not be the biggest health concern out there, but bad breath can certainly be annoying. Eating hot peppers is said to help combat bad breath. Of course, be careful. Some of the hot pepper powders and extracts out there are extremely potent. You need to follow the directions by using them in small amounts and only as a food additive or as directed on the label.

Want to lose weight? What if you could add something to your diet instead of just taking everything away? Sounds easy, right? It gets even better. What if you could add in something you’re already craving and sit back as it does some of the hard work for you? It’s not exactly a magic pill, but it probably feels like one. We’re talking about putting some cayenne pepper in your diet. Several studies have looked at the impact of eating hot peppers and hot pepper products, and the results look pretty positive if you’re trying to cut down on calories and give your metabolism a real boost. If you’re trying to lose weight, consider the heat scale. Cayenne peppers are packed with capsaicin. Researchers believe peppers that rank higher on the Scoville scale not only deliver a bigger punch, but they may also help with weight loss. That’s because the high heat level makes your body’s temperature rise, you start burning more calories and you feel fuller.
When you don’t feel hungry anymore, you’re also probably less likely to keep snacking.
There are plenty of easy ways to add cayenne pepper to your diet. You can cook with the pepper or add powdered cayenne to a protein shake or smoothie. You don’t need a ton of it to get the benefits, either. Start with a smaller dose to make sure you’re not overdoing it on the hot scale. You can also try a capsaicin supplement. One of the easiest ways of all, though, is just to add some cayenne to a dish you already enjoy. Spice up a Mexican dish, chili, a stew or curry with a splash of pepper. But remember, you don’t have to go overboard. Sometimes a little goes a long way.

It’s been a long, long year for most of us. If you’re still not feeling it, there’s a pretty easy way to shed a few extra pounds before the summer season kicks off in full swing. We’re not talking about some crazy fad diet where you give up all the good stuff and starve yourself to drop a few pounds, either. In this case, you use a natural compound, in something we all love, to speed up your metabolism, curb your appetite and start burning calories without worrying about going completely hard-core at the gym.
If it sounds too easy to be true, it isn’t.
We’re talking about taking a climb up the hot pepper scale with cayenne pepper. Sure, it’s a great addition to any snack or meal, but it turns out the capsaicin in peppers can help reduce the cravings and make you feel fuller faster so you don’t overdo it on extra calories. It’s been studied several times, and the results look promising. Because cayenne pepper is so spicy, when you eat a hot pepper your body’s temperature rises. When that happens, you start burning calories. In studies, not only did eating hot peppers help raise a person’s metabolic rate, but it also helped suppress their appetite. If you’re feeling full already, you’re less likely to overeat and stuff yourself with unnecessary calories. When you start consuming less calories, it only makes sense that you start losing weight. While eating cayenne peppers alone isn’t the magic solution to weight loss it can certainly help to climb up the spice scale. When you combine it with other healthy decisions, like drinking plenty of water, including more healthy choices in your diet and adding in some exercise, you’re already on the track to better health, and potentially a leaner you come this summer.

Also, rates of stomach cancer are unusually low in countries where chili peppers are part of a regular diet, as capsaicin appears to neutralize some carcinogens.
Research has proven that adding chili peppers to your foods can help your body burn calories faster (up to 45 calories more per meal than if you eat bland dishes) and speed up your metabolism. Chili peppers are an incredible replacement for the fat and salt in your diet as the flavors of the foods are enhanced sufficiently with the ingredients themselves.
When people eat hotter chilies, they experience pain in their mouths and throats. The nervous system reacts to the pain by releasing morphine-like endorphins. Mmmmmmm…morphine. Endorphins create a sense of euphoria similar to the "runner's high" that some people get from exercise. But since I don't exercise, I will liken it to a good old-fashioned romp in the sack with Suzie Hot Pants! People who regularly eat chilies will find that they develop a tolerance to the heat and will have to eat increasingly hotter foods to get high.
Fresh chilies offer the highest source of vitamin C available from any vegetable.
Surprisingly, fresh, uncooked green chilies provide at least twice and up to eight times the amount that is available from citrus fruits. Chilies are also a good source of vitamin A. As chilies turn from green to red, they lose much of their vitamin C but gain vitamin A through increased amounts of carotene. When fresh chilies are dried they lose most of their vitamin C content, but their vitamin A content increases 100 times. In addition to adding great flavor to food that thrills the palate, chilies offer the world some amazing health benefits.
Medical research continues into the medicinal powers of peppers through scientific studies and clinical trials. In the years to come, perhaps society can blend the knowledge of the ancient cultures with modern medicine and arrive at a balance that ensures the prevention of disease and the promotion of good health, using every means at our disposal. Chilies are not only "hot" in popularity and flavor but have proven to be very "healthy" as well.
As if the perfect balance of heat and award-winning flavor isn't enough, here are a few other reasons to eat Hot Sauce with every meal.

Now a new review suggests that four out of 10 people could experience some pain relief from the cream of topical capsaicin, an active component of chili peppers.
Oxford University researchers Sheena Derry and Andrew Moore led the review, which comprised nine studies involving 1,600 adult participants.
The reviewers said it might be best to consider capsaicin cream as an extra pain-relief measure or a later, if not last, resort when treatment is inadequate, especially since there have been studies on oral medicines for nerve pain that provide clear evidence of their effectiveness and side-effects.
One drawback with capsaicin is that commonly patients experience local skin irritation - burning, stinging or redness - at the application site.
These side-effects generally prove mild and transient but do lead some patients to discontinue capsaicin.
Capsaicin preparations available in the US include Zostrix, Capzasin-P and RT Capsin.
Researchers were following up on a related 2004 review about capsaicin treatment for neuropathic pain, which implied that capsaicin might serve as a useful addition to or as a single therapy for certain patients who did not respond well to or could not tolerate other treatments.
Scott Zashin, a clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School (UTSMS), said generally he does not use capsaicin in his own practice.
Since 2004, new developments in capsaicin formulations, notably the development of a high-dose (eight percent) patch, added timeliness to the new research review, said a UTSMS release.
The new review appears in the latest issue of The Cochrane Library

Spicy cooking can have some unexpected health benefits. No longer is "hot spicy food" blamed for ulcers and other gastric ills.
In fact, the opposite seems to be true.
When taken internally, capsaicin stimulates circulation sequentially, from the internal organs to skin surface and subsequently throughout the entire body. When applied externally and once it penetrates the skin, capsaicin increases circulation to the site where it has been applied.
Capsaicin has been used medicinally for centuries. Hot peppers were one of the first plants domesticated in the Americas. Archaeologists believe people in Mexico were eating chilies and peppers as early as 7000 BC. Ancient pain-relievers and other medications used capsaicin as a major ingredient.
Capsaicin has been proven to be highly successful in relieving symptoms of arthritis, sports injuries, other kinds of chronic joint and muscle pain, and certain kinds of itching.
Capsaicin cream was originally used to treat the intense pain of herpes zoster (shingles), which is a nerve infection caused by chickenpox and usually afflicts adults. Medical studies have shown that capsaicin significantly lowers cholesterol and is a factor in warding off strokes and heart attacks.
Capsaicin has also been medicinally proven to aid in the human body's process of digestion and protect against stomach ulcers and the ravages of alcohol. No wonder tequila and hot food make me feel so good!

Don’t say we didn’t try to tell you that some of the many benefits you get with a hot yoga class you can also get with eating a hot chili pepper.
Hot Yoga has been linked to many health benefits that include:

sweating out toxins
elevates the heart rate
improves breathing to help asthma
weight loss
improved mood

Sound familiar spicy lovers? This is because these same benefits are had when you include Capsaicin in your diet, that magical compound in chili peppers that give them their heat.
While you don’t need to get your yoga mat and towel out or really need to go anywhere except maybe the grocery store to pick up some peppers, you may need to take extra deep breaths when taking in all that heat. The hotter the pepper, the more likely you are to sweat (releasing toxins) just like in hot yoga. Chili peppers are also healthy for your heart, helping to reduce cholesterol. Chili peppers can help to clear out breathing passages to help with congestion and can help prevent asthma attacks by numbing specific nerve endings that cause a nasty cough. Peppers have also been linked to aiding in weight loss. These tiny peppers have the power to speed up metabolism and warm your body to burn more fat. But most of all? Eating chili peppers helps to elevate your mood! Creating happy and present feelings much as we get from doing yoga.
What’s the best way to maximize these benefits? Take a hot yoga class then have a healthy lunch doused in hot sauce like Mad Dog Pure Ghost Hot Sauce.
Namaste!

And, the more weight you have to lose, the harder it is to do. But, it is entirely possible to get your body back into the shape you’re meant to have as long as you remain committed to your goal. Fortunately, you don’t need to do it on your own. There are plenty of resources available to anyone who wants to shed unwanted pounds – and super hot sauces are part of that mix, here is our guide to weight loss secrets.
What Are Super Hot Sauces?
Unless you’re into your chilies, it’s likely that you confuse the bottles of hot sauces on the tables of restaurants as super hot sauces. But, these are unlikely to be anywhere close to the level of super hot sauce – unless your server has somehow warned you about their use. Most of the bottles you would find in a restaurant have a remarkably low ranking on the Scoville scale. These condiments will fall somewhere around, and usually much below, 10,000 Scoville. Super hot sauces start at around 150,000 Scoville and range up to around 750,000 Scoville.
Often these super hot sauces get their heat from capsaicin extracts. This is the compound in peppers that give them their heat. And, even though it feels like it’s burning your taste buds, capsaicin doesn’t physically burn anything. As a matter of fact, it’s odorless and tasteless. The burning feeling is the activation of your pain receptors. But, the more of it you can handle, the better the positive weight loss effects you’ll experience.
How Capsaicin Affects Weight Loss
This odorless and tasteless compound offers a vast range of health benefits. When it comes to weight loss, the capsaicin found in super hot sauces acts in several ways to assist you with your goals.

Thermo-genesis – The fire associated with super hot sauces help your body to convert some of the food you eat into heat somewhat instantly. This process is known as thermogenesis, and it means that you’re not holding onto those calories for your body to use later – they’ve already been burned off.

Increased Metabolism – Although it is only a slight increase, super hot sauces temporarily increase your metabolism. This allows your body to work through stored fat at a faster pace. The longer you keep this increase, the better it is for you, so feel free to add chilies to every single meal.

Appetite Suppression - The capsaicin levels found in the super hot sauces have been found to limit the number of calories consumed during a meal. More than that, it continues to suppress the eating surge making it easier for you to avoid snacking between meals. And, when it is time to eat again, people that had super hot sauce during their last meal are likely to eat less at the next.

Good Feelings – Capsaicin is known to trigger the release of natural endorphins. As you know, it’s always easier to stick to your goals when you’re in a good mood. Super hot sauces help you maintain those lovely feelings for a long time. As a bonus, they also boost your libido.

And, if this isn’t already exciting enough, capsaicin has displayed its healthy prowess in a number of clinical tests. Its benefits range from stalling type 2 diabetes and strengthening your heart to killing off cancerous cells and stopping heart attacks in their tracks.
Ready to get super hot sauces working for you? It’s time to get your hands on a bottle of 357 Mad Dog Hot Sauce. This sauce weighs in at 357,000 Scoville; if you’re not sure you can handle that heat (yet), then you can always dive in with Mad Dog Liquid Fire Hot Sauce. Now, you can enjoy your food – and the way your body looks. And, there’s no need to keep your secret a secret.
