Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a great online tool to manage pixels and code snippets to be included on your sites. Setting up containers for different sites and copying tags, rules and macros between them however is a real pain in the ass. GTM at the moment doesn’t support this, however, with a little Greasemonkey magic, everything is possible.
That is how the Google Tag Manager Import Export script was born.

I was quite surprised I didn’t find any good online css editors.
I have a simple textarea of css selectors and attributes, and I wish to offer some kind of help to the user in editing those rules. The best tool I found is called Sky CSS Tool, and it does a lot of fancy things I like, however it doesn’t support attribute generation from the CSS Code itself. Also the project is pretty much left alone for a number of years.

Well, i usually dont blog about games, but this is something historical:)
We have all been waiting for the sequel of the popular game Duke Nukem for well over 10 years, and it seems like the wait is over. 3D Realms went broke, and it is questionable if the game will ever be finished.
As Guardian newspaper games writer Steve Boxer said: “Sadly, Duke Nukem Forever was the most aptly named title in the history of games.

…so apparently iBuildings fired up a new techportal, with editor-in-chief as Cal Evans. Cal recently moved to The Netherlands to join iBuildings, before as we know he was doing the Zend podcasts from the US. (What happened with the podcasts anyway? I loved to listen them while going to work.)
The techPortal already has some nice articles, like debugging development and getting started with phpUnderControl, and it also promotes the 2009 WinPHP Challenge.

As i am currently looking for a job in Belgium/Netherlands, i was curious to see how many job openings are out there for IT professionals in Europe.
To satisfy my curiosity, i have put together a little web application called European Job Search. It still has some minor flaws, but already can give results you wouldn’t expect (many php jobs in the Czech Republic, anyone?).
The map itself is SVG based (see my previous posts about building it), and i am sorry to say, but it will NOT work for Internet Explorer users.

Mine only reached 62/100, most penalties i got because of not using XHTML markup, using a table for layout and using absolute units in my CSS. I should improve, even microsoft.com scores 80 :)

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have been playing with SVG lately. I haven’t done any SVG for many years and I was curious how the browsers support them by the end of 2008. The overall picture would be quite satisfying, if our good old friend Internet Explorer wouldn’t ruin it all.
The root of all problems is that IE6 and IE7 (i have no info on IE8) do not support SVG natively but by using the external Adobe SVG Viewer, which is going to be discontinued BTW.

Earlier this year i blogged about a website called www.savethedevelopers.org (link missing on purpose). Originally the site was recommending other browsers than Explorer 6, namely: IE7, Firefox, Safari and Opera. As for today the site redirects to a Get Internet Explorer page, more ironically if you do a google search for “save the developers”, the same site appears on the top of the list.
To restore the healthy ecosystem of the Internet, I suggest all of us remove our links from this site:)

…ok, so you want a killer web app that will locate the position of the current visitor? No problem. Here are the tools of the trade. (Your requirements may vary, for me, i want Lat/Long information, with regards to the KISS principle)
1. IP to location databases
Typical providers include ip2location, ipligence, maxmind. They are usually expensive, static, and just too big. The concept is that you have a big database downloaded and monthly updated, and you can open that database to get the location info from whatever platform you want.

Still beta (you can easily get it from filehippo), but brings around some nice new features. I have been playing around with it a little bit, things i liked most:
* Photo Viewer is a real eye-candy, it replaces your default application for double click, it loads relatively fast, and has some nice user interaction features (try your scroll wheel on the image itself, and on the film band).
* Collage maker - it has a killer interface to create the photo pile of your wish, resize, rotate, move your images one by one.

I am using SimplePie to fetch the latest RSS feed from FeedBurner and display the last five items. At the beginning i was suspicious of the cache mechanism, but even if i turn off caching completely, it will not fetch the latest feed. So i dugg myself into the internals of SimplePie and it turned out that when it fetches the feed from FeedBurner, it is presented a redirect to http://feedproxy.

Just as a reminder: in Firefox 3 when you try to access a file input’s value property, it only gives you the filename, whereas earlier versions (and some other browsers at the moment) would give you the full path.

Some time ago CSS “frameworks” were growing out of the ground like mushrooms after rain. Now we have at least a dozen, and the number is growing.
I have always wondered what similarities/differences they have, who knows, i might use one of them in the future. The answer comes from Eric Meyer, who has made some comparisons recently, which was summed up Jeremy Keith in this article. A good reading if you have two minutes.

…so recently i was playing with SVG, and i wanted to embed an older version of this map of Europe into my html . Currently it is about 500 KB, but as far as i remember, it was even heavier. Pretty bad, if you want to inline it, and your visitors have to download it. So how did i reduce the size to one tenth of it?
gzip?
Yes, gzipped version of SVG exists, but not when you inline it, so its a no-go in my case.

If you like Ext JS, the new 2.2 version brings out some nice features for you. No question Ext is a great library and worth to play with, despite the recent disputes around the license change from LGPL to GPL.
My only frustration with Ext was only a few days ago, when i was about to make modifications in an open source project that had an earlier Ext 2.0 bundled, but not fully!

…so you were a good programmer and you have added javadoc style comments in front of your javascript functions/classes/methods? Good boy! Now lets see what you can do with them. Solutions in order from worst to best (just to keep you entertained):
Javascript Documentor (JSD)
It is java based what would be super useful in ant scripts, however it expects me to write comments like:

I was thinking recently how to speed up in an intelligent way the creation of image maps with my online utility. Often users try to map images like this:
The user will select “Home” and try to map it, giving it an url, adding an alt attribute. Now what if we could prefill the alt attribute with the text “Home”? Optical character recognition (OCR) in javascript? Wow, that would rock!

To my greatest surprise the part where the application showed significant slowdown in some cases, was a simple echo statement. Well, i wont be able to optimize that, will i? Why can this be happening?

…ok, so i was doing some database tuning recently to speed up one of our deployed instance of SugarCRM, when i became alert of an interesting phenomenon.
The table accounts not only had a primary key(id), which is normal, but also had a composite key(id, deleted) named idx_accnt_id_del. Now wait a minute! Even if you perform a query with id AND deleted criteria, id already points to a single record in the table, since it is a unique primary key.

Obviously sooner or later you realized you are pretty much stuck when you are offline.

…so the other day i figured out that the parser i used so far (LastRss) was not able to read Atom feeds. Since our beloved Blogger only publishes atom feeds i needed to find a cure for the problem.
One easy solution is to ask FeedBurner to convert between rss and atom, which works pretty well, but better not mess with the Gods, lets do it the proper way.
Then i came across this blog entry, that compared some of the existing solutions.

Hi folks,
There have been some activities recently around the project that i’d like to inform you about:)
Firstly, i have imported all the source code into an svn repo at imgmap.googlecode.com.
Anonymous checkout is possible, commit is only for project members (if you are interested in this, drop me an email)
The source will soon be packaged into a new release as soon as everything is close to stable:)

Online Image Map Editor

During my recent (06/2006) work at AITIA International, Inc., I managed to create the Online Image Map Editor that is available at : http://www.maschek.hu/imagemap.
With the help of the editor you can easily draw ALL the standard image map shapes (rectangle, circle, polygon), and you will have full control over the generated HTML code as well.
The editor natively uses the canvas HTML element to draw the shapes on a given image.
