Executives from iconic publications like Esquire, Cosmopolitan, Vogue, and Vanity Fair are descending on Washington to lobby for another AI regulation bill, this time tackling the threat AI poses to their bottom lines and longevity.

Introduced to the House in July, the bipartisan Stealth Bot Prohibition Act would prohibit the deployment of "stealth bots," or unidentified AI agents tasked with scraping and indexing a website's content, without disclosure. Should it pass, bot scrapers and their purposes would have to be clearly identified to website publishers or risk civil penalties under the Federal Trade Commission. Attorneys general would also be authorized to take action against AI scraping.

Backed by the trade nonprofit News/Media Alliance, the group is calling for federal regulation to level the playing field as AI dominates website traffic, search, and discoverability — and puts many publishers at risk.

"We are drowning in bot traffic that is hurting our ability to serve our readers, and existing technical tools simply aren’t enough to protect our content from malicious actors that can disguise their identity," wrote News/Media Alliance president Danielle Coffey at the time of the bill's introduction. "We need transparency and accountability for bad actors, as well as enforcement mechanisms that require the most basic transparency disclosure."

Debi Chirichella, president of Hearst Magazines, publisher of Esquire, Elle, and Men's Health, and newspapers including the Houston Chronicle, has called the legislation a step toward a "clean internet."

"AI companies are using disguised bots to scrape and steal original journalism with zero accountability," said Roger Lynch, CEO of Condé Nast, which publishes magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair, and the New Yorker.

Despite concerns about the technology's impact on the industry and news literacy, many of the industry's heavyweights have negotiated ways to profit from their content being used for AI training and search.

Condé Nast entered a multi-year partnership with OpenAI in 2024, joining other major players like the Associated Press, The Atlantic, and TIME to officially license its content for profit. The Guardian and Axios signed licensing deals with the same AI developer last year, while the Washington Post entered an agreement allowing ChatGPT to surface its original reporting.

Google signed its first AI licensing deal with the Associated Press in Jan. 2025. The Associated Press also has a deal with Microsoft, along with People Inc. and USA Today Co. Meanwhile, Meta entered the game late, signing a multi-year licensing and training contract with seven publishers, including CNN and Fox News. Amazon has nabbed agreements with the New York Times, Condé Nast, and Hearst.

Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, in April 2025 filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.

With less than two months until Grand Theft Auto VI finally arrives on Nov. 19, Rockstar Games is opening the vault.

Game Informer published its GTA 6 cover story on Tuesday, speaking with several members of Rockstar's leadership, including co-studio head Aaron Garbut and senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries. The feature fills in many of the gaps left by Netflix's 27-minute extended look in August, especially regarding the game's setting, its systems, and just how much of Florida Rockstar is trying to cram into a single map.

Here's everything new we learned, plus a quick refresher on what we already knew.

What we already knew

The basics have been locked in for a while. GTA 6 follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a criminal duo that players can switch between. They're a Bonnie and Clyde-type duo, and you'll be responsible for nurturing or breaking apart their relationship.

The game returns to Vice City, Rockstar's take on Miami, inside the fictional state of Leonida. Mashable's breakdown of the Netflix extended look covered a lot of gameplay ground. A slow-motion aiming mode, a morality or honor indicator shaped like a small demon head, and Red Dead Redemption 2–style interactions with NPCs. Additionally, we know there will be racing, base jumping, and a more detailed carjacking system.

Most of the supporting cast had been introduced before, too, though Game Informer's roundup includes one fun detail: actor Stephen Root has said he voices Brian Heder, a veteran drug runner who assigns missions and lets Jason live rent-free in one of his properties.

Leonida is Rockstar's biggest map ever

According to Garbut, Leonida is the largest world Rockstar has ever built. It's roughly twice the size of GTA 5's map and denser, with far more interiors. Garbut summed up the appeal of Florida as "America dialed up to 11."

Game Informer confirmed the map's six main regions: Vice City, Leonida Keyes, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. Rockstar's senior vice president of environment art, Paul MacPherson, told Game Informer that the team studied North Florida cities such as Jacksonville, Panama City, and Ocala. That region promises ATV trails, a mud park party, nighttime demolition derbies, farms, and bass fishing.

Don't expect a Disney World parody, though. When Game Informer asked about Orlando's theme parks and the Space Coast, MacPherson stopped short of confirming them. He said the team had to narrow down which landmarks made the cut and suggested those exact locations may not be in the game.

Jason and Lucia's relationship is up to you

The nurturing of Jason and Lucia's relationship, as stated earlier, is not new. What is new is that Jason and Lucia always stay partners, but players decide whether they remain friends or become a romantic couple.

Game Informer reports the bond grows through missions and small gestures like holding hands, opening doors, answering calls and texts promptly, and accepting invitations to activities together.

Rockstar says there's no gameplay advantage to either path. However, parts of the story will reflect the state of their relationship. Game Informer also reports that player decisions, big and small, can shift the story enough that Rockstar is encouraging multiple playthroughs.

Hurricanes are real, and the weather is local

Owen Shepherd, Rockstar's vice president of art for lighting and rendering, told Game Informer the weather system has been rebuilt to be localized and persistent. That means you can stand in sunshine while watching a storm soak the next neighborhood over, which any Floridian will recognize.

Rain leaves lasting puddles behind, rainbows can appear in the right light, and a new wind system moves hair, debris, water, and swamp grass. Tropical storms and hurricanes are confirmed. Rockstar didn't say how often they hit or whether they affect gameplay or the story.

More than 170 animal species

Rockstar vice president of dynamic art Michael Kane confirmed that Leonida features over 170 animal species, including more than 60 bird types and over 30 land mammals. Confirmed species include:

• Florida natives: manatees, flamingos, and pelicans, plus the alligators we've already seen.

• Invasive species: green iguanas, feral cats, cane toads, armadillos, and rhesus macaque monkeys.

• Marine life: sharks, whales, rays, sea turtles, and jellyfish, each with distinct movement behavior.

Borrowing from Red Dead Redemption, some animals will be trackable and sorted into Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary categories.

Leonida's residents are also getting an upgrade. NPCs now vary in height, body type, and skin details such as freckles and tattoos, and their fashion varies from region to region. Rockstar even has a Los Angeles team dedicated solely to writing NPC chatter.

Apple's new CEO John Ternus debuted a new generation of iPhones in September, and he's reportedly gearing up for the company's next big launch under his leadership.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the source of virtually all news on unreleased Apple products, reported today that Apple is preparing a big entry into the smart home market, with a new smart display, HomePod, and Apple TV device on deck for October.

Gurman reported that the display will act as a smart home hub and, together with the HomePod and Apple TV, will "serve as a showcase for Apple's new Siri AI assistant." Gurman said the display will be able to recognize different members of a household, providing personalized answers and information. The Apple Post referred to the new smart display as the HomePad (Gurman used Apple's internal name, J490), but the official name is unknown at this time.

Apple's HomePod speaker line hasn't been refreshed since the launch of the HomePod (2nd Generation) device in January 2023. However, Gurman said Apple is preparing to release a new HomePod Mini, in particular.

The Apple TV lineup is likewise due for a refresh. The last Apple streaming device was released in 2022, even as the Apple TV streaming service has become an awards show darling. Apple TV broke records at this year's Emmy awards, bringing home 29 awards in total. On top of that, Apple TV broke viewership records in September, recording its highest-ever weekly viewership, according to Deadline.

So, when can you look for the new Apple smart home devices?

According to Gurman, Apple fans should circle Oct. 13 on their calendar.

On this, the final day of Bisexual Visibility Month, I must say my piece about a sexuality label controversy before I once again disappear into the ether until next September.

It centers around musician King Princess, who identifies as a lesbian. This week, a Nov. 2024 appearance on the podcast Celebrity Book Club with Steven & Lily resurfaced on social media, in which the singer-songwriter said, "I've taken a lot of dick."

"Sometimes you get bored, and you're just like, 'I'm just gonna ride a cock,'" she continued. "People get really shook when I say that… I'm not bi, but why would I exclude myself?"

"I would fuck a dude if I was bored enough," she said. 

If you know anything about the online sapphic community, you'd be able to guess this would start a firestorm. And it did. King Princess's name trended on Reddit, with threads in various subreddits like r/lesbiangang and r/lesbianactually expressing disappointment and confusion. The conversation bled into X, Instagram, and TikTok, with reactions ranging from commenters saying she's "yet another bisexual cosplaying as a lesbian" to "lesbian deserves better than this" to "hot takes" that it's OK for her to identify as a lesbian and express this. 

King Princess herself responded to the controversy in now-deleted TikToks, saying she's never dated or fallen in love with men, she's just slept with them because, "Why not?" She rejected the notion that she's less of a lesbian because she's not a "gold star," a term in the lesbian community to refer to a lesbian who has never slept with men.

In another deleted response, King Princess asserted that she's a lesbian and that it's unfair to bi people to equate her with that. 

"The amount that I actually care about men romantically or sexually is so small…it would be inappropriate to call myself bisexual," she said. "You can't tell me what my sexuality is."

As a bisexual person who has written about how bisexual people are plagued with the worry that they're not queer enough, and how bisexual women are routinely the Pride punching bag, here is my take.

Is King Princess bisexual?

Only King Princess can answer this question. I think she's right that strangers can't tell her what her sexuality is. But if she came up to me and begged, "Anna — whom I have previously never met and know nothing about except your exceptional coverage of LGBTQ issues on Mashable.com — please, please tell me what you think my sexuality is!" I would, honestly, say bisexual. 

Labels exist to fit the person, not the other way around. From my observations online, some people are changing what labels mean so that they can squeeze themselves into a certain identity, instead of reflecting on their actual desires and behaviors and choosing the label that coincides with it. "Lesbian" connotes not sleeping with men, ever. Right? So, how does what King Princess describes fit into lesbianism?

It's my bisexual opinion that if you're 99 percent attracted to one gender and one percent attracted to another, that still makes you bisexual. I get frustrated when "straight" women like to make out with other women but poo-poo the thought that they're bi. I don't see much of a difference between that and what King Princess said.

I hear the lesbian community's frustration about this, as well. This is far from the first time a celebrity who once identified as a lesbian has come out as bisexual (or pansexual) and dating a man. Jojo Siwa is a recent example. Reneé Rapp came out as a lesbian in 2024 after previously saying she was bi, but in a 2025 podcast appearance, she wondered out loud, "What if in 10 years I don't like that identity either? What if in 10 years I'm completely different?"

I can imagine this is vexing to lesbians who are certain their identities won't change. 

I do wonder if the reluctance to identify as bisexual is because of the public opinion about it. As I wrote earlier this year, bisexual people are a little annoying. We are a gray area of sexuality, and the human brain prefers things to be black-and-white. We don't fit into the monosexual box. We question societal and gender norms, and we often have to be loud about it.

Societal stigma against bi people still exists. This summer, discourse about how some straight women don't want to date bisexual men recycled around yet again. And as of this month, there's new data about it: Two-thirds of straight women are unwilling to date a bisexual man, according to YouGov. 

It's not just straight women, either. The same research found that a third of straight men are unwilling to date a bi woman, and one in five lesbians feel the same about bi women.

When asked why, straight people couldn't articulate why. One in six gave non-answers, like saying it's their preference or that they just don't want to. Others said they're afraid a bisexual person would cheat, a longtime stereotype against bisexual people. 

So, yeah, I understand why someone may not want to be a part of the bi community. We're not exactly universally beloved. We're called liars, cheaters, and sluts. We're told we don't exist. But given that most people in the LGBTQ community identify as bisexual (in the U.S., anyway), we're also not alone.

It also doesn't help that King Princess has thrown other sapphic pop stars under the bus with an (also now-deleted) comment that, "You guys also might wanna check on the pop divas who are actively lying about being gay…in fully committed relationships with men on the DL." This has since spun into a sort of witch hunt, with social media users speculating about who, exactly, she meant.

How King Princess identifies is her business. But the controversy around her comments suggests that, in 2026, people are more interested in deciding who fits within an identity than in understanding the people who use it.

Tailored dresses and cashmere cardigans the color of fresh blood make Hathaway's pale skin look luminescent and hard like marble. She's regal and ruthless as a villainess that is not just fun to watch, but scratching at the heights of iconic psycho-biddy stars like Shelley Winters, Bette Davis, and Joan Crawford. 

And let's consider this a good opportunity to remind you, dear reader, that Who Slew Auntie Roo? and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? are sensational selects for spooky season. But should Verity join their ranks?

Sadly, no. But Hathaway is innocent on that charge. 

Verity is a psycho-sexual thriller for the faint-hearted.

Screenwriter Nick Antosca (Brand New Cherry Flavor) adapts Hoover's Verity into a color-by-numbers psycho-sexual thriller. Dakota Johnson stars as Lowen Ashleigh, an impoverished writer whose books have been published but widely ignored. So, when she gets the chance to ghostwrite the final novels of Verity's best-selling book series, the steady work and fat paycheck might be tempting. However, more tempting is the potential to get closer to Verity's husband, the dashing Jeremy (Trap's Josh Hartnett). 

But there's an odd catch to this contract. Lowen must stay in Verity's remote cabin and work out of the author's personal office. Why? Well, Jeremy gently explains, Verity was in a horrid car crash that left her unable to walk or talk. A shadow of her former self, she is wheeled around her home, where her young son frolics and her husband looks forlorn. And soon, Lowen lurks about, stumbling onto a shocking memoir that says Verity has more in common with her fictional villains than anyone could imagine. 

Naturally, Lowen becomes obsessed, not only with Verity and her secrets but also with her life and family. The younger woman fantasizes not only about straddling Jeremy — while wearing a silk robe embroidered with the initials VC — but also making out with Verity herself. Between such torrid thoughts and flashbacks to the early days of the Crawfords' romance, Verity is studded with sex scenes. However, director Michael Showalter shows no passion for them.

Known for helming comedies like The Big Sick and the Hathaway-fronted The Idea of You, he seems out of his depth in creating titillating love scenes. There's a woeful lack of foreplay. Despite an R rating, Verity bears only bum and a bit of tit. And overall, these scenes are too short to satisfy, and awash with cliched close-ups of a woman's open, groaning mouth, to feel properly enthralling. Beyond the tawdry thrill of such scenes, the desire portrayed in Verity is supposed to be so intense that it drives Lowen off her professional ambitions, down a dark path of suspicion and temptation. Without properly sexy scenes, this character turn just doesn't work. But Johnson is part of the problem there.

Because Lowen meets Verity after the car crash, much of Hathaway's screentime is a performance of the author as Lowen imagines her. A heightened vision of femininity and ferocity, she is gorgeous, with a wicked wit, a terrifyingly mercurial nature, and a killer smile lined with a bold red lip.

Hathaway plays the role with clear relish, her brown eyes flashing from a hardened glare to a beguiling gaze in an instant. Her lips sliding from a smile to a snarl with an electric ferality. But best of all, she works in some quirks of speech that evoke the Transatlantic accent favored by Golden Age Hollywood stars and quirkily reimagined for comedy by Catherine O'Hara's Moira Rose on Schitt's Creek. Listen for the way Hathaway says "Boston," as if it's a four-letter word she's never deigned to say aloud before. In such moments, Hathaway is keenly hilarious, and she knows it. 

Johnson, on the other hand, comes off as bored. Yes, in the book (and the movie), Lowen describes herself as having "Resting Bored Face." But even in fantasy sequences of torrid sex, Lowen practically sleepwalks. This character is meant to be our bewildered guide into a world of mixed messages and manipulation. But in Johnson's hands, Lowen is low-key annoyed, whether her character is playing with Verity's young son, seducing her husband, or reading her scandalous writings. And Johnson has no chemistry with Hartnett or Hathaway, making the love triangle element fall flat.

There are points where I wondered if Johnson's flatness was intentional. Leaning into the trashy novel of it all, Showalter might have urged her toward stiffness to create a campy comedic disconnect which would then be bolstered by the comically bad dialogue. For instance, in an early scene where a meet-not-so-cute leaves Lowen covered in a stranger's blood, she flirts haphazardly with Jeremy, who says he's seen worse. While Lowen inexplicably fails to wash off a swath of blood from her neck, she asks if he's a doctor. And in response, Hartnett, with an outrageous deadpan, says, "I'm in real estate." It's funny! Is it supposed to be? I'm not sure. I'm even less sure that his follow-up comment ("I pulled my daughter's body out of a lake.") was meant to be funny, but it was so incredibly awkward that it got laughs!

Where Hathaway plunges deep into the sultry, salty waters of psycho-sexual thriller with her psycho-biddy eccentricity as a tool, Johnson seems rudderless. Or perhaps, 11 years after she broke through as the star of Fifty Shades of Grey, she resents being back in the place of sex-starved ingenue. Overall, her effect makes the movie feel like a chore instead of a cheap thrill.

Those who reveled over The Housemaid or A Simple Favor will likely enjoy Verity. Though Showalter's offering lacks the liveliness and transgressive edge of Paul Feig's thrillers, it's erratically entertaining. However, it's hard to ignore that Verity could have been more. We're still living in the seismic aftermath of Heated Rivalry, a Canadian mini-series that turned hockey smut into a critically heralded and fan-worshipped sensation. Show creator Jacob Tierney not only brought author Rachel Reid's characters to life with unapologetically explicit sex scenes, but also used the intimacy of these scenes to expose a hidden side to the characters, who wore masks for their public personas. 

Then, even this summer, movie audiences were gifted with Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. Inspired by a slew of slasher movies, writer/director Jane Schoenbrun explored a story similar to Verity. A young writer on assignment to revive a popular franchise finds her life dramatically changed as she becomes obsessed with an older woman, central to that franchise. While both films are rated R, only Camp Miasma doesn't hold back when it comes to sex and violence. Schoenbrun went to unhinged extremes, including decapitations that create blood geysers out of human necks. And then, her vision of satisfying sex didn't glamorize it as the zipperless fuck of author Erica Jong, but embraced the mess of fluids and emotions (and gummy candies).

Verity is nowhere near as bold as any of the movies I've mentioned here. It's sort of weird, sort of sexy, and sort of funny. But ultimately, it feels criminally constrained by mainstream prudishness. Which means that as the credits roll on Verity, I was left teased but unsatisfied, wishing for the movie on the level of Hathaway's performance. 

Verity opens in theaters on Oct. 2. 

Today, dating app Tinder launches a group chat feature called Group Hangouts in the U.S. It builds on the app's Double Date Mode to help form connections through friends and groups. With Group Hangouts, three or more people can add an IRL activity, like karaoke, and find other groups with shared interests to start chatting and matching.

"Double Date proved something we suspected all along, young singles want their friends in the mix when they're meeting someone new," Tinder's chief product officer, Mark Kantor, stated in a press release shared with Mashable. "Group Hangouts takes that even further, and we think it's going to be one of the most fun things we've ever built on Tinder."

How Tinder's Group Hangouts work

Forty percent of Group Hangouts invitations were accepted in early tests in Australia. Once in a group, women were 2.2 times more likely to Like a group profile than a traditional profile. This is similar to the positive results Tinder saw when it first launched Double Date in June 2025, in which women were three times more likely to Like a pair than individual profiles.

Early tests of the Double Date feature also found that those matches exchanged 35 percent more messages than traditional one-on-one matches. And, given that 90 percent of Double Date users were under 30 during testing, it signals to Tinder that Gen Z daters are interested in dating with friends.

Groups can vary in size, but everyone must have their own Tinder account and profile. Individuals choose to join and can leave a conversation without leaving the Group. Users can also block and report other people.

Group Hangouts is the latest in a growing trend of dating apps involving other people in singles' orbits to help them find love. Hinge recently launched Friend's Take, a way for a user's loved ones to vouch for them on the app.

This goes hand in hand with an increasing desire to meet people in person rather than on one's phone. This summer, Eventbrite reported a spike in the use of the phrase "meet cute" in event listings, with hobby-based outings doubling as socializing opportunities.

Apps are trying to capitalize on that, as well. In July, Tinder expanded its Events feature to several major cities, so singles can find IRL events and match with other attendees. And former Tinder executive, Taru Kapoor, just launched a "social matching" app called Rivet.

Group Hangouts is now available in the U.S. and select markets, and will roll out to more areas soon.

The biggest tech announcement events of 2026 may have come and gone, but Samsung is making sure the news doesn't stop.

The Korean tech giant announced refreshes of two of its product lines on Wednesday morning: The Galaxy Tab S12 tablet series and the Smart Tag 3 Bluetooth tracker. Between the two new tablets and the next-generation tracker, all three products will be available this fall. Here's everything you need to know about them.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S12 specs and price

First up are the two new tablets, the Galaxy Tab S12+ and S12 Ultra. There does not seem to be a base S12 this year, and S12+ and Ultra models both seem pretty similar outside of a few key specs. These tablets both come in gray and silver colorways. The Galaxy Tab S12+ starts at $1,199, and the S12 Ultra starts at $1,399. It should be noted that the S12+ is the only model that can optionally support a 5G connection. Both are available on Oct. 7.

The S12+ has a 12.6-inch display with 1,600 nits peak brightness and a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. Meanwhile, the S12 Ultra carries those same display specs into a larger 14.6-inch panel. Both devices have Samsung's Armor Aluminum material protection and are IP68 rated. You'll get the same MediaTek Dimensity 9500 processor in both tablets, as well.

Samsung is promising up to 23 hours of video playback and fast charging that should get you from zero to 100 percent in around 95 minutes. As usual, you'll get an S-Pen stylus in the box, as well as free trials of Photoshop, Google AI Pro, and Notability to make the most out of that stylus.

Similar to many of its other recent products, Samsung is incorporating Galaxy AI features into these tablets. Features like Now Nudge are present and accounted for, but since it's a tablet, you can also do three-way splitscreen with different apps for maximum multitasking efficiency. There's also a dedicated, programmable Galaxy AI key on the hardware itself this year, which can activate any AI assistant you choose.

Secondarily to the new tablets, Samsung also revealed Smart Tag 3, the third take on Samsung's in-house Bluetooth tracker. They come in black and white colors, and you can get one for $29.99 or four for $99.99. Smart Tag 3 is slated for launch in early November.

It's 35 percent smaller and 33 percent lighter than Smart Tag 2, per Samsung. I got to briefly get my hands on one, and even though I haven't ever used a Smart Tag 2, I can still tell you that the new ones are compact enough to fit just about anywhere you might need to put them. Samsung has enhanced the range of Compass View to up to 200 feet, making it easier to track down a lost item with your phone. You can also allegedly get up to 550 days of battery life on default settings.

Tesla's second-generation Roadster could be the most postponed car ever. Originally announced in November 2017, and slated for a 2020 launch, the allegedly super-quick electric car has been delayed time and time again.

After many, many teasers and subsequent delays over the last two years, Tesla was finally slated to unveil the Roadster on Oct. 1. Alas, that's not going to happen.

On Monday, Tesla's official X account said the event has been rescheduled to Oct. 15.

"We've been tracking the weather closely with local meteorologists, but given the severe conditions predicted & because this event can only be held outdoors, we've made the difficult decision to reschedule.

New date is October 15. Additional details to follow," the message said.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk chimed in with a clarification of his own: "Due to high winds, the new Roadster demo is postponed by 2 weeks," he tweeted.

The countdown timer on Tesla's website has now changed to reflect the Oct. 15 launch.

This, of course, caused a hurricane of tweets dunking on Musk saying, essentially, that windy weather shouldn't be a problem for a car. This is a car, however, that (according to Musk) will be able to fly in certain configurations, at least over a short distance. It appears that the flying part will depend on the weather.

Apple's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, will be available for pre-order on Oct. 16. But if you really want one, you can prepare for that moment four days in advance.

Reddit users noticed that Apple's pre-order page for the iPhone Duo now says you can "come back on 10.12 to get ready for pre-order."

To see what that means, just visit the pre-order page, where you can already pick your phone's finish and storage, choose whether you want to trade in an old device, and pick financing options, AppleCare coverage, and your preferred carrier.

Right now, you can't really do much with that, as the "Continue" button is greyed out. But on Oct. 12, you'll presumably be able to save all that data, so you can pre-order the phone with one click when the time comes.

The time will officially come at 5 a.m. PT (8 a.m. ET) on Oct. 16, and the iPhone Duo will start shipping to customers on Oct. 23.

While there's no official word on this, rumors have long claimed that the iPhone Duo might be in short supply at launch. While not everyone will be able to pre-order it right away, making sure you have everything set up before the pre-order window opens might help you get your device a bit sooner.

How much will iPads cost during Prime Big Deal Days?

Since we can't predict the future, we can only rely on past data to know how cheap iPads will be during Prime Big Deal Days (running Oct. 6 and 7). We rounded up the all-time low prices on every iPad model to get an idea of what to expect during Amazon's October Prime Day.

Unfortunately, I don't suspect any of the iPads will reach new all-time lows during Prime Big Deal Days, simply because all of Apple's tablets increased in price this year. That being said, I would like to see solid deals on iPads for this upcoming sale. In an ideal world, sale prices on iPads would fall below the prices of these models before they were increased.

Which iPad model should I buy?

The right iPad for you depends purely on your needs. Do you want something that has enough storage and speed for streaming? Do you want to use it to read? Do you want to use a tablet as your primary workstation? Your answers should factor into your decision.

To get you started, we believe the best iPad for most people is the M4 iPad Air (2026). It has exceptional performance but is also in the middle range for both price and capability.

We wanted to test our way through the best Ninja had to offer in kitchen appliances. We brought the most popular products from the brand into our kitchens to see how the Creami, Slushi, Foodi, and Ninja Kitchen System stacked up.

Why buy Ninja?

There are plenty of kitchen appliance brands out there, so why Ninja? Generally, we find its products to be some of the best value products. They tend to be the most affordable options on the market that still deliver excellent performance.

Plus, Ninja products are really beginner-friendly devices that are easy to use with minimal setup required. The appliances bring ease with delicious end products. The Creami is a perfect example of this. Traditional ice cream making requires a bit of skill, knowing how to cook custards to the right temperature with hours of churning. But the Creami simplifies ice cream making with a user-friendly product that still delivers a fantastic end result.

Just because they're beginner-friendly devices doesn't mean they're only for beginners. They're convenient devices with professional-level performance that help develop a more efficient kitchen.

Other products we tested

Having rounded up the best Ninja kitchen appliances means we tested a lot of products and not all of them made it to the list, two notable exceptions being the Ninja Creami Deluxe and Foodi Grill and Air Fryer.

The Ninja Deluxe was my introduction to the Creami lineup, and it is great. It spun up creamy frozen confections and even featured a frozen drink setting. However, compared to the Swirl, it required several re-spins to get the right texture.

Meanwhile, the Foodi Grill was another great multicooker from Ninja. The indoor grill made delicious, juicy chicken breasts with actual char marks. Plus, its air-frying capabilities were a little too good. It got things crispy fast, but often felt like it dried out food in the process. Plus, it was just so large that it didn't feel like a practical device for most people.

That being said, these devices are good, but not in our all-star line-up.

Europe's Jupiter-bound Juice spacecraft photographed Earth and the moon as it whipped past our home planet on Monday, stealing energy to fly the long trip.

During its flyby, the European Space Agency's probe came within 5,370 miles of Earth, jetting over the Indian Ocean. It made its closest approach at 7:45 a.m. ET. One of its monitoring cameras captured Africa, and its navigation camera snapped Madagascar and the moon.

Earth's gravity bent the spacecraft's trajectory by 20 degrees and sped it up by about 7,800 mph. Juice, short for Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, burned little fuel to get that boost, officials said.

The space flyby marked the mission's second Earth pop-in and ticked off yet another gravity assist to fling the spacecraft onward. The series of maneuvers began in 2024 with a combined moon-and-Earth flyby, and it also included a pass by Venus in 2025. Juice will return for a third and final Earth flyby in Jan. 2029, which should set it on its final course to Jupiter. It should arrive at the gas giant in 2031.

"We used only a small amount of the propellant reserved for this flyby," said Angela Dietz, Juice's spacecraft operations manager, in a statement. "This gives us more to use at Jupiter to carry out observations of the planet's icy moons."

Juice's two monitoring cameras kept shooting photos throughout the visit, taking their final shots on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the navigation camera turned toward the edge of the moon. Those frames are more than just stunning pictures; they are a test of a new method for pinpointing the spacecraft's position, a skill Juice will need to steer around Jupiter's moons. 

In the next few weeks, the agency expects to release high-resolution views of Earth and the moon from JANUS, Juice's main science camera, once scientists have reviewed them. (If you're wondering what that acronym stands for, it's a Latin phrase: "Jovis, Amorum ac Natorum Undique Scrutator," which loosely means, "Comprehensive exploration of Jupiter and his loves and descendants.")

Once Juice arrives at Jupiter, the spacecraft will make 35 flybys of the giant moons Ganymede, Europa, and Callisto. All three moons have oceans, and scientists want to know whether they could support life, now or perhaps in the past. Juice will also study Jupiter's intense magnetic field and radiation before it settles into orbit around Ganymede in 2034.

Why fly in such a loopy way? A direct trip would naturally take less time, but it would require a massive rocket and a staggering amount of fuel. Juice would then need even more fuel to slow down so it wouldn't overshoot Jupiter. By borrowing speed from Earth, the moon, and Venus, Juice saves fuel it will need later for the actual science part of the mission.

Scientists used the flyby as a rehearsal, giving them a chance to test Juice's instruments on a real target in space. They got the first during the 2024 moon-and-Earth flyby and the second when Juice observed interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS in 2025. 

Juice didn't waste the opportunity to see Earth in a new way, spending several days in its "magnetotail." That's the part of the magnetic field that a steady stream of charged particles from the sun sweeps out behind the planet. As Juice took measurements down the tail, the European-Chinese Smile mission watched the Northern Lights, a magnetic field phenomenon at the north pole that happens when solar energy crashes into Earth's atmosphere.

Officially, Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days event runs from Oct. 6 through Oct. 7, but unofficially, it's already here. Amazon has dropped a ton of early deals on everything from TVs to outdoor gear to headphones. And we're trawling the pages and pages of listings to find the deals that are actually worth grabbing.

If a pair of noise-canceling headphones or earbuds is on your wishlist, we've got some good news. Plenty of excellent options have already gone on sale, including the Beats Studio Pro and Powerbeats Pro 2, the AirPods Max 2 and Pro 3, and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2 (headphones and earbuds). Alberta Tech didn't start posting TikToks because she was plotting her escape from corporate America. She was bored.

Like so many of us, cooped up at home in the early days of the pandemic, she started filming jokes, riffing on the absurdity of her tiny New York apartment and whatever else the For You page happened to hand her. A software engineer by day, she was just looking for a little fun. What she found instead were fellow tech workers, who saw themselves in every short-form bit.

By then, she'd been an engineer at Google for six and a half years, some of them spent on YouTube. For a long stretch, she lived two lives at once, building features for one of the world's biggest creator platforms by day, then becoming a creator herself by night like a techy Hannah Montana. But earlier this year, she stopped splitting herself in two and went full-time.

Her old life turns out to be her secret weapon. Alberta's comedy takes the dizzying, sometimes ridiculous world of tech, from generative AI to vibe coding, and makes it make sense by making it funny. She was once a hard skeptic of generative AI, and while it's now part of her workflow, she's still not sold on its ability to write a joke that lands.

In Mashable's Creator Playbook, Alberta Tech opens up about walking away from software engineering, why laughter is the fastest route to understanding, what AI is actually good for, and the one question every aspiring creator should answer before quitting the day job.

Mashable: You had an established career as a software engineer before becoming a full-time creator. What made you start making content?

Alberta Tech: I started making content during COVID. I was just bored at home. I was like, "I want to be making jokes on TikTok," because everybody I know is scrolling TikTok right now, making jokes on TikTok. I started off making really silly jokes about whatever would land. I'd make jokes about living in a tiny New York apartment during COVID, anything I could. As time progressed, I found my community more and more through tech, through software developers specifically. At that time, I was working as a software engineer at Google, so that was what my daily life was all about. It sort of grew from there.

Mashable: How did you balance your career at Google with being a content creator?

Alberta Tech: For a long time, I was doing both, until just a couple months ago. I loved working in my job. I was working specifically on YouTube, which obviously is very important to me now. I loved being able to build features for YouTube. But at a certain point, I realized that to take this really seriously, make the kind of content, and hit the high-quality bar I wanted, I needed to do this full-time.

Were you nervous to finally make that leap?

Totally. I was so nervous to tell my boss. She was like, "Are you sure about this?" And I was like, "I'm pretty sure. I've been thinking about this for a long time."

Do you think being an engineer helped establish trust with your audience?

I think it's super important. My audience now is just over half software engineers and developers. To speak to that group of people, you need to have some kind of credential behind you. You need to know what you're talking about.

I didn't talk about my career at Google specifically online almost ever because I didn't want to get fired, mostly. But I think the way I was talking about the topics and the things I was referencing made my audience know that I truly did have a career in this.

You satirize generative AI a lot, but you've also described yourself as cautiously optimistic about it. How did you get there?

When generative AI first started becoming popular, I was so, so skeptical. I don't know if you've heard the term "stochastic parrot," the idea that the LLM is just saying the next most plausible thing. I was like, "Everyone thinks these things are genius, but they're kind of spewing garbage." And in late 2022, they were kind of spewing garbage.

But I have been really impressed by the progress that I've seen. I've seen AI used for actually very useful and good things, and now it's a part of a lot of my workflows. It has made me optimistic about what the future is going to bring.

What do you think AI is actually good at for creators, and what is it still terrible at?

I use AI a lot for researching, and I think that can be really useful because obviously you shouldn't be trusting facts blindly that you get from AI. But it can show you which paths to go down. This happens to me all the time where I'm asking AI about a topic I want to cover, and then I'm seeing, "I didn't even know about this backstory, and now I'm going to be able to go down a rabbit hole here." I think that is amazing.

Where I'm still not 100 percent convinced is the creativity aspect of it. I know people will try all the time to write out a script using ChatGPT. I have never had that work for me. I can have it give feedback and say, "This is not a good fact. This is spelled wrong." But whenever I say, "Generate a funny script" — not quite. It's not quite there yet.

"Vibe coding" has become this huge internet buzzword. As an actual software engineer, what's your relationship with it?

It's interesting because for software engineers, the word "vibe coding" has become such a dirty word. People really don't want to be called a vibe coder. But the word has evolved a lot. When it first came out, it truly meant typing into ChatGPT, Claude, whatever, "Build me a website," don't look at it at all, and just blindly trust that code.

Now a lot of developers have tools that fit into their workflows, so they can actually look at that code, know what's going on, or give very specific instructions as to what they want the AI to do. It has evolved a lot. It's not just blindly trusting that code, but becoming part of basically every programmer and software engineer's workflow.

We don't have a great word to describe that process. I've heard "agentic engineering" used before, but it's not a very popular colloquial word, I will say.

How has being an engineer made you a better creator? And did being a creator ever make you a better engineer?

My job as an engineer has definitely helped me as a creator in that I'm talking about technical topics, and I had six and a half years of experience really delving into those technical topics. I don't know every topic that comes up in the news, but I know how to look into those. I know how to think about them, how to conceptualize them. And then, in a boring way, working in corporate for a long time helped me stay on top of emails, stay on top of my calendar, know how to do all those not-so-fun but very important things.

As a creator, what really helped me in my career as an engineer was being able to communicate and being able to talk about these more technical topics in ways that are easy to understand.

Your videos are funny, but you're also unpacking some pretty complicated topics. How do you balance entertaining people with actually educating them?

I like to say that comedy is one of the best ways to get to the root of a problem, to get to the root of a topic. If somebody is laughing at something that is kind of technical, they have to understand it in some capacity. Sometimes I find that setting up the joke and making the punchline and giving just enough context to make that happen lets people actually get the topic, get the news story that's going on in AI.

As AI tools get better, do you think they'll make it harder for human creators to stand out?

I think AI does level the playing field a little bit. People are using AI tools so much, obviously now to the point of fully AI influencers, which is a bit scary. I would like to think that what helps you stand out is the original idea, the original script — not just an AI influencer reading it or having a ChatGPT script.

I actually ran an experiment where I took a video that I had posted before that had gone pretty viral, and I remade the whole video with AI video generation tools and took the exact same script. The video did pretty well, which told me a couple things. One, that the concept was the most important thing. And second, it told me video generation is getting really good. Scary good.

What's exciting you most about tech right now?

All of the new model releases and everything that's going on are uncomfortably exciting, as I say, because we are really on the precipice of this really intelligent AI, and everyone is paying attention. These used to be topics that were so small and only appealed to a small group of very technical people. But now it's something that is in the news every day. Everyone is talking about it.

What would you tell someone who's thinking about quitting their job to become a full-time creator?

My advice to new creators is that, in a lot of cases, your audience doesn't really care about you as a person, and so you kind of have to make them care about you. Until you can find that thing that makes them care about you — the value that you're providing, the entertainment that really hooks — you have to keep trying.

The NYT's latest daily word game has become a social media hit. The Times credits associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu with helping to create the new word game and bringing it to the publications' Games section. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Pokémon fans are desperately hunting for anything from the new Pokémon 30th Celebration collection. Anyone who experienced the queues circling Target stores this weekend can attest to that.

The White House announced a revamped America.gov recently, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio taking to the stage to dazzle audiences with a new online passport application process.

"Why are you doing this like an Apple product launch?" jokes Daily Show host Jordan Klepper in the clip above. "And one more thing: This passport folds."

The host goes on to play a clip of Rubio demonstrating how the passport's eagle gives the illusion of flying as you flip through the pages.

This season of F1 is unlike any other. Every season of F1 has a number of fascinating storylines to follow, but due to a major set of regulation changes, there's so much uncertainty right now. And uncertainty can lead to exciting racing.

What is F1?

Dyson launched the AI-powered Dyson CameraJet electric toothbrush on Sept. 8, marking the company's first foray into the world of oral hygiene. Unfortunately, it was a difficult debut. Users have complained of issues with the device, which vanished from shelves almost as quickly as these reports rolled in. Now Dyson has explained exactly what went wrong.

The $499.99 Dyson CameraJet is a supremely souped-up, app-connected toothbrush which took six years to develop. Equipped with a camera that analyses images from inside your mouth, the CameraJet is designed to identify gaps between your teeth and floss them with jets of water.

However, problems swiftly surfaced after the Dyson's toothbrush became available on Sept. 8. Social media posts reported issues such as leaking tanks and water getting into the battery compartment, while some CameraJet devices stopped working within the first few uses —  or even the first few seconds of use.

Dyson previously acknowledged an issue with one of the components in a small number of early CameraJet batches, and stated that impacted customers were receiving support. Now the company has elaborated, explaining that the problem was due to a "process issue" with a single batch of jet tubes. In a statement to Bloomberg, a Dyson spokesperson said that the issue caused "a potential for water seepage which affected the performance of a small number of products." 

"We are sorry that we have let down our loyal customers and we will do all we can to support them," said the spokesperson.

Users' issues with the CameraJet had led to speculation that its "sold out" status on Dyson's website was actually an indication that the device had been pulled from sale. Within weeks of its launch, the CameraJet became unavailable for purchase in multiple countries, including the U.S., UK, and Australia, and it remains unavailable at time of writing.

In response, Dyson previously claimed that the CameraJet had not been recalled, and that the lack of available product was merely due to strong demand. Now Dyson has reportedly told Bloomberg that the CameraJet is out of stock because the company isolated impacted devices in its inventory. 

Exactly how much of Dyson's stock was impacted is unclear. While Dyson claimed that only a "small number" of CameraJet stock suffered this hardware issue, the company seems to have set aside enough devices to significantly impact global supply. Dyson is now working to catch up on production and restock. Even so, it has a significant fight ahead of itself to counter the CameraJet's poor first impression.

Ted Lasso Season 4 has been an experiment in high highs and low lows.

Highs: The introduction of Alice (Tanya Reynolds). Her and Ted's (Jason Sudeikis) wordless crying scene. Basically, anything to do with the Lady Greyhounds.

Lows: Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Keeley's (Juno Temple) dragged-out will-they-won't-they arc. The dumbing down of Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham). Overlong, overstuffed episodes.

But in Season 4, episode 9, "Mae Rides the Bus," Ted Lasso finds its lowest low yet. I'm talking about "six feet under the soccer pitch" levels of low, and that's all down to the episode's bizarro ending.

For the most part, "Mae Rides The Bus" is a celebratory episode. Keeley, Roy, and Rebecca rejoice at Keeley's surprise pregnancy. Mae (Annette Badland) gets to travel in style on the Richmond team bus. The Lady Greyhounds pull off a key win that will get them promoted. Not even the reveal that Zelda (Tracey Ullman) is the villain who's been buying up all the team's shares can rain on Richmond's parade.

Then, Ted Lasso spoils it all by killing Mae.

The beloved owner of the Crown & Anchor pub collapses in the joyful moments right after Richmond's win. Ted Lasso doesn't actually show her going down, just her fellow Richmond supporters seeing she's fallen and calling for help. The last time we see Mae, she's cheering her heart out.

Ted Lasso has never been afraid to shy away from death. Ted's father's death by suicide is a major factor in the show's early seasons and its focus on mental health. However, Mae is the first member of Ted Lasso's main ensemble to die onscreen. (First human character, that is. RIP Earl the Greyhound.)

The move is jarring, bordering on cruel. Mae has been a key figure throughout Ted Lasso, but Season 4 has really stepped up her importance. She's developed a deeper bond with Ted's son Henry (Gus Turner), and in episode 8, she joined in the show's fun detective story riff by helping Higgins (Jeremy Swift) investigate the sold shares.

Most importantly, she's come to represent an older generation of women sports fans who get to see themselves represented on the pitch at such a high level. A proud supporter of the Lady Greyhounds since day one, Mae's waited her whole life for Richmond to have a women's team, and she's never afraid to put sexist detractors in their place.

Now that Mae has lived to see her women's team succeed, Ted Lasso has deemed that her time is up. Her death couldn't have been more out of place, or more clumsily handled. Her constant references to her age — sorry, her "seasoning" — throughout "Mae Rides The Bus" telegraph her obvious death, but even as you realize what's coming, you can't quite believe Ted Lasso would pull such an egregious move.

In hindsight, Mae's delightful day with the team now reads like videos in which pet owners treat their beloved animals to one last perfect day before they're put to sleep. Only here, it doesn't feel like there's any actual love involved in the send off. It just feels like an overly saccharine set up for a pre-finale rug pull, and Mae just happens to be the sacrificial lamb.

Ted Lasso's Anthony Head tribute couldn't be more misplaced.

As if Mae's death couldn't get any more baffling, Ted Lasso immediately follows it up with an in memoriam tribute to Anthony Head. The actor played Richmond FC's former owner and Rebecca's ex-husband Rupert Manion in the first three seasons of the show. He passed away June 1 of this year from complications due to pneumonia.

In a vacuum, the "in memory of" card isn't a problem. TV shows and films traditionally pay tribute to members of their cast and creative team who have passed away. Just this year, Euphoria closed its Season 3 premiere with an in memoriam to late actors Eric Dane and Angus Cloud, as well as producer Kevin Turen.

Ted Lasso could have gone a similar route, dedicating its Season 4 premiere or finale to Head. Instead, it chooses a path calculated to provoke the biggest emotional outburst: putting it mere moments after a series character death. For a show where the writers often pluck at your heartstrings, this move is so blatant, it feels more like the writers have shoved their hands into your chest cavity with the hopes of yanking out your heart entirely. The result isn't one of fond remembrance of Head, but rather a baffled "huh?" that Ted Lasso thought it had to wait until a character died in the series to pay tribute to Head in the first place.

Instead of celebrating Head's career or Mae's love of the Lady Greyhounds, the final moments of "Mae Rides The Bus," well-intentioned they may be, also leave us fully aware of the show's emotional manipulation. That's quite the hole Ted Lasso has dug itself, and as we head into the season finale, it has quite a bit of work to do to climb back to the highs we know it's capable of.

Amazon provides a pretty irresistible shopping experience through its speedy shipping (among other Prime member perks), vast product range, and unbeatable prices. Prime Day events (including the upcoming Prime Big Deal Days) can often lead to regretful impulse buys. Psst: Just because something is down to its lowest price ever doesn't mean you need it.

With another Amazon shopping holiday on the horizon, officially kicking off on Oct. 6, you may be wondering how to return unwanted items purchased at Amazon. Whether you fall victim to the inevitable Prime Day impulse buys, end up with a broken item, or accidentally order two of something, it's actually pretty simple to make returns in 2026.

Here's the step-by-step process to return your Amazon packages:

1. Go to Amazon's website and click on Returns and Orders in the top-right corner of the screen. If you want to make a return on your Amazon app, the process is similar. On the app, click on the three horizontal lines at the bottom right of the screen. Then click on Orders and follow the same steps.

2. A new page displaying your latest orders will appear. Scroll down to the item you want to return, then click Return or replace items right next to the item listing. In the app, you'll need to click the specific item before you see the option to "return or replace items."

3. The next page that opens will have a drop-down menu listing reasons for returning the item. Select the option that applies to your purchase, then click the yellow Continue button.

4. Then you will have the option to refund the balance to your Amazon account or to your debit/credit card. Pick what you prefer — refunds to bank cards usually take a week or so, while refunds to your Amazon account wallet are pretty immediate.

5. The last step in the online return process is choosing where you'll drop off your return. Amazon is pretty flexible with return methods: You can drop off the item for free at your nearest UPS Store, Kohl's, Whole Foods, Staples, or Amazon Store. You can also schedule a UPS pick-up for $7.99. These options may vary depending on your location. Once you select a method, you'll receive a QR code that you can use to return the package at the drop-off location. If you choose UPS or Kohl's, no original packaging, tape, or shipping label is necessary — just bring the item and scan it.

Though Amazon touts "free returns" on many products, you may see a mystery $1 fee on your account if you did your return at a UPS store. As of April 2023, Amazon often charges a $1 fee for items returned to UPS when there is a Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh store, or Kohl’s closer to their delivery address.

While the return process is fairly intuitive, Amazon's return policy can be tricky for some purchases. While the website states that most items can be returned in their original packaging with no missing parts within 30 days of receipt, regardless of whether they've been opened, there are some notable exceptions. Some luxury items cannot be returned once opened, for instance. And if you purchased an item on Amazon from a third-party seller, that seller might have their own return policy that differs from Amazon's. Meanwhile, not all items can be returned, such as digital orders, gift cards, and groceries purchased through Amazon Fresh.

There are five rounds to the game. The first round sees you trying to guess the word, with correct, misplaced, and incorrect letters shown in each guess. If you guess the correct answer, it'll take you to the next hurdle, providing the answer to the last hurdle as your first guess. This can give you several clues or none, depending on the words. For the final hurdle, every correct answer from previous hurdles is shown, with correct and misplaced letters clearly shown.

An important note is that the number of times a letter is highlighted from previous guesses does necessarily indicate the number of times that letter appears in the final hurdle.

Today's Connections: Sports Edition will be easier for who've watched BMX racing.

As we've shared in previous hints stories, this is a version of the popular New York Times word game that seeks to test the knowledge of sports fans.

Like the original Connections, the game is all about finding the "common threads between words." And just like Wordle, Connections resets after midnight, and each new set of words gets trickier and trickier — so we've served up some hints and tips to get you over the hurdle.

What is Connections: Sports Edition?

The NYT's latest daily word game has launched in association with The Athletic, the New York Times property that provides the publication's sports coverage. The sports Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words, and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake — players get up to four mistakes before the game ends.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

Welcome to your guide to Pips, the latest game in the New York Times catalog.

Released in August 2025, Pips puts a unique spin on dominoes, creating a fun single-player experience that could become your next daily gaming habit.

Currently, if you're stuck, the game only offers to reveal the entire puzzle, forcing you to move on to the next difficulty level and start over. However, we have you covered! Below are piecemeal answers that will serve as hints so that you can find your way through each difficulty level.

How to play Pips

If you've ever played dominoes, you'll have a passing familiarity with how Pips is played. As we've shared in our previous hints stories for Pips, the tiles, like dominoes, are placed vertically or horizontally and connect with each other. The main difference between a traditional game of dominoes and Pips is the color-coded conditions you have to address. The touching tiles don't necessarily have to match.

The conditions you have to meet are specific to the color-coded spaces. For example, if it provides a single number, every side of a tile in that space must add up to the number provided. It is possible — and common — for only half a tile to be within a color-coded space.

Here are common examples you'll run into across the difficulty levels:

• Number: All the pips in this space must add up to the number.

• Equal: Every domino half in this space must be the same number of pips.

• Not Equal: Every domino half in this space must have a completely different number of pips.

• Less than: Every domino half in this space must add up to less than the number.

• Greater than: Every domino half in this space must add up to more than the number.

If an area does not have any color coding, it means there are no conditions on the portions of dominoes within those spaces.

Today's NYT Strands hints will be easy if you like music.

Strands, the New York Times' elevated word-search game, requires the player to perform a twist on the classic word search. Words can be made from linked letters — up, down, left, right, or diagonal, but words can also change direction, resulting in quirky shapes and patterns. Every single letter in the grid will be part of an answer. There's always a theme linking every solution, along with the "spangram," a special, word or phrase that sums up that day's theme, and spans the entire grid horizontally or vertically.

By providing an opaque hint and not providing the word list, Strands creates a brain-teasing game that takes a little longer to play than its other games, like Wordle and Connections.

The Swan: Behind The Mirror is now streaming on Hulu. And if you needed to pause this reality-TV documentary for a rage break, you're not alone. Like Reality Check: America's Next Top Model, this critical look-back on a pop culture low point is full of jaw-droppingly outrageous revelations that demand a breather. And hey, we're here to breathe with you!

Celebrated documentarian Erin Lee Carr built her reputation exploring the complexities of controversial (and criminal) figures in films like Thought Crimes: The Case of the Cannibal Cop, Mommy Dead & Dearest, and I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth V. Michelle Carter. However, she's more recently explored where investigation and pop culture collide in Britney v. Spears, Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara, and The Swan: Behind the Mirror.

With her latest, Carr ushers audiences back to 2004, when Fox debuted The Swan, a new reality competition show that promised its subjects the chance to change their lives through 90 days of dieting, exercise, therapy, and free plastic surgery. However, few who signed on were prepared for the emotional manipulation producers would employ to ensure TV from which audiences couldn't look away.

For The Swan: Behind the Mirror, Carr sat down with 12 "swans" across the show's two seasons, as well as some of the series' producers, personal trainers, and Dr. Randal Haworth, an outspoken plastic surgeon who has plenty of wild takes across this new doc.

There's plenty of WTF reveals in this electrifying documentary. So, let's dig in.

The Swan contestants didn't know about the pageant when they signed on.

Creator and executive producer Nely Galán proposed The Swan as a makeover show that would allow average women to radically change their appearances, with the promise of a new and improved life. The participants — known as swans — were promised an expense-free overhaul that would include personal trainers, therapy sessions, dental surgery, and cosmetic surgery. However, the swans weren't told in advance about the pageant that would become the show's finale.

That idea came from Fox executive Mike Darnell, who senior producer Carl Buehl says described The Swan as a show where "We're going to take ugly chicks and make them hot."

Galán went with the idea, presenting it as an opportunity after the Season 1 Swans had signed on. "You ladies are going to get to be in a pageant," is how Cindy from Season 1 recalls the news being "dropped [like] a bomb on us."

"The Swan promised us therapy, plastic surgery," Kelly A said. "It did not promise us a pageant."

Kristy added, "None of that was mentioned before. Yeah, we did sign up to be filmed. Yes, we did sign up to share our stories. We didn't sign up for a pageant."

Making matters worse, the reality of the pageant wasn't fully revealed until after their surgeries. Then they learned that each woman would be coupled up with another swan in their big reveal, but only one of each twosome would go onto the pageant. The others would be cut from the show and sent home. This meant the sisterhood forming behind the scenes was threatened by a climactic competition.

Beth said of this, "These women were the ones who were supporting you after you had surgery. They were emotionally the ones available that were there for you. And then all of a sudden, it's my competition?"

Kristy reflected on the competition reveal, saying, "I don't know what fresh hell you live in where you think it's okay to bring these women into program under the guise that you're giving them the gift of a lifetime, and then immediately pit them against the very women that they bonded with this whole time to go to your backwoods beauty pageant. They didn't look at us and see us. They saw dollar signs."

Spoilers: These women would not be defined by the producers or brought down by The Swan. While there will be a lot of lows, tears, and shocking reveals along the way, The Swan: Behind the Mirror is ultimately about how these women came together to become a flock that continues to support each other. ("Flock around and find out, bitch!")

This is a recurring revelation in The Swan: Behind the Mirror. First there was the pageant surprise. Then, when it came to consultations with the plastic surgeons, Tawnya recalled declining facial procedures and hearing from the other swans, "I didn't know you could say no."

The threat — said or implied — was that saying "no" meant being sent home.

Archival footage of The Swan reminds viewers how plastic surgeons, Dr. Randal Haworth and Dr. Terry Dubrow, pressured the women to get specific surgeries, including tummy tucks. Producer Jenna Baker confirmed the pressures applied, saying in her interview with Carr, "I'd say women had maybe 1% say over what procedures they had."

From there, the swans healed in isolation, leaning on each other, as the producers provided sparse medical aftercare and kept the contestants away from their friends and family for the 90-day production period. They were also pressured to get back in the gym, while still healing from surgeries. ("I can't control stupidity or stubborness," Haworth said of these workouts.)

Speaking about how he helped cast wannabe swans, Haworth told Carr, "They wanted to know who would make good TV — not in terms of their backstory. I'm just looking at their face. And my goal was as a plumber, can I perform early hyperaesthetic surgery on these people?"

Carr then interrupts him to note that plumber is a "weird" analogy, because "you're literally talking about toilets and women."

To this, Haworth responds, "That was unintended." He admits from there, he was searching for "drama" when it came to these physical transformations.

Later, he says, "[Getting a dog was] the only good thing that came out of my second marriage" because it taught him empathy. Getting a dog taught him empathy. Not his first marriage, or his second. "[My dog] taught me a lot about humans and how to be more empathetic."

But perhaps the most infuriating thing Haworth says in The Swan: Behind the Mirror occurs when he's confronted about how some swans feel harmed by the experience. To this, Haworth says, "There are no victims in life, there are only volunteers."

This callous statement ignores how the show was misrepresented to its participants.

This might not seem like news nowadays, as audiences are more aware of how reality TV producers manipulate participants. However, military veteran Dore's story is a horrid example of such manipulation.

Producer Jenna Baker confirmed the "money shot" was "getting a swan to cry." For Dore, this meant that after surgery, a cameraman poked at an emotional wound. While she was looking at photos of her newborn nephew, he said, "So how does it feel that everybody else can have kids, and you can't have any?"

Dore retreated to the bathroom to escape the cameras. "It was despicable," she said of their tactics.

"These women were treated like a storyline, not like people," Baker reflected.

"I almost died for reality television."

As featured in the film's opening and trailer, Season 2 swan Kari recalled a medical emergency during her surgery, though she still doesn't know exactly what happened.

Sitting alongside her sister Gina, she told Carr that a nurse who cared for her said the pain in her ribs suggested she had received chest compressions, which could mean her heart stopped on the table.

And the consent around the taking of these photos is debatable at best.

Amy from Season 2 says she and other participants were brought into a garage at Dr. Haworth's office and photographed nude against a white backdrop. Several women expressed how they felt uncomfortable in the scenario. Kari recalled that no cameras from The Swan production were present, but her understanding was "if you don't do this, you go home."

Asked about this photo shoot, Haworth confirmed to Carr that it happened. "Thank you for reminding me," he told Carr. "I was working with Dah Len, who's a top photographer. He worked with Madonna. And we asked the girls if they would want to do before and after [shots]...for a big coffee table book that never saw the light of day."

Asked if the women consented to be photographed, he insisted they did. But Amy says that's not how she was approached about the shoot, and Kari expressed surprise about the supposed "super artsy" book — as Haworth put it.

"I still have those pictures," he noted. "It was an art project."

American Airlines just debuted a new feature on its app that makes it easier to snag your preferred seat (window, aisle, or even middle) — but there is no shortage of caveats.

The new feature allows flyers to select their seat characteristics after booking, so they don’t have to constantly check a cabin map. Should a flyer’s desired seat be unavailable at the time of booking but later open due to cancellations or others’ seat changes, the app will move the flyer into an eligible seat matching their preferences, free of charge.

Open your reservation in the app, scroll down to Trip options, then tap the Automatic Seat Change option and select your preference.

The feature's restrictions: 

• Flyers must be AAdvantage members for access

• Flyers must be on single-passenger reservations with an assigned seat

• Flyers will not be moved to available seats in different cabins

• Automatic seat changes stop 24 hours before departure

The Automatic Seat Change option is a boon for those very partial to a particular seat type. For those who put a lot of weight on which row they’re in, it’s not so great, as the app will move you around the cabin wherever your desired seat type becomes available (well, except to First or Business Class). You can at least ask it to stick to seats closer to the front or bulkhead seats.

American AI Airlines

The app feature is a product of American’s ADEPT initiative, which utilizes AI tools and is "designed to recruit and develop early-career technology talent."

"Rather than starting with a technology and searching for a use, the team started with a known point of friction and designed the capability around the outcome that mattered most: making travel easier for the customer," according to an American Airlines statement.

Why are Windows laptops so expensive right now?

The ongoing memory crisis, aka "RAMageddon," is the main reason why Windows laptop prices have skyrocketed this year. But it also doesn't help that Microsoft reportedly raised its Windows 11 licensing fees by abnormally high rates. In other words, PC makers are spending more on both hardware and software right now, so they're making consumers eat the extra costs.

Some of our current picks have faced price hikes in recent months, including the Asus Zenbook A16, the Dell XPS 14, XPS 13, and 14S, and the Framework Laptop 13. We've re-evaluated them and decided that they're still worth recommending at their higher prices, but will remove them from this guide if we find better-value alternatives or if their prices keep climbing to exorbitant levels.

What's new this month

I made several updates to this guide in late September 2026:

• I added the Asus ProArt PZ14 as a new pick following our latest round of testing. It's now our favorite Windows laptop for creators.

• I added the Dell XPS 13's results from our battery life test. It lasted 18 hours and 56 minutes — more than four hours longer than its Apple counterpart, the MacBook Neo.

• I added some information about a new Surface Laptop that Microsoft just announced (see below under "What to look forward to").

I'm currently monitoring the availability of two of our existing picks: the Acer Swift Edge 14 AI and the Intel-powered Acer Swift X 14. Both were out of stock at the time of writing but could return, so I'm keeping them on this guide for now. If it turns out they've been fully discontinued, I'll replace them with other models. (As things stand, the Dell 14S would become my top choice for college students, and the AMD-powered Acer Swift X 14 AI would be my new pick for photo and video editing.)

As a quick note before we get into the picks, Mashable tests laptops on the basis of performance, battery life, design/build quality, and value. We do so using a combination of synthetic benchmarking and real-world usage. You can read more about our testing process in the "How We Tested" section.

A note about ARM-based Windows laptops

Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series chips use ARM-based architecture, not traditional x86 architecture like Intel and AMD chips. As such, their compatibility differs. ARM-based laptops don't work natively with certain specialty software (like AutoCAD), nor can they run as many PC games.

ARM compatibility issues are a non-concern for the majority of general-purpose Windows users, but they'll be dealbreakers for some demographics — PC gamers being an obvious one.

College students should also steer clear of ARM laptops. When I examined the 10 top public universities' hardware recommendations for the 2026 fall semester, I found that a couple schools explicitly advised their students against getting ARM-based laptops to make sure they can run all of their necessary coursework without emulation. (This is one big reason why I recommend the Acer Swift Edge 14 AI and Dell 14S for college students, in particular: They have x86-based Intel chips.)

The good news is that ARM compatibility has gotten better over the past couple years, and it will definitely continue to do so now that Nvidia is coming out with its own RTX Spark "superchips," which run on ARM.

What we're testing right now

The Mashable team has a bunch of other Windows laptops in hand for testing right now, including the Alienware 16 Area-51, Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i, Lenovo Yoga 7i 2-in-1, Lenovo Yoga 9i 2-in-1 Aura Edition, Lenovo LOQ Essential 15, Lenovo Legion 5i, Lenovo Legion Pro 7i, MSI Prestige 16 AI+, Framework Laptop 13 Pro, Asus Zenbook Duo, and Acer Swift Air 14. Stay tuned to see if any of them make the cut for a future update to this guide.

What to look forward to

On Sept. 23, Microsoft announced a second-generation Surface Laptop 13-inch with the Snapdragon X2 Plus chip and a brighter display. It's a slightly cheaper and more portable version of the company's flagship Surface Laptop 8, which comes in two sizes and with Snapdragon X2 Plus or Elite chips.

Now available for preorder, the Surface Laptop 13-inch starts at $1,199.99 with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS storage. It launches Oct. 13 alongside the Surface Pro 12-inch (2nd edition), a detachable tablet that starts at $1,149.99 with the same specs.

Earlier in September, several other PC makers announced new laptops at IFA, a tech trade show in Berlin. The models confirmed for an eventual U.S. release are:

• Lenovo IdeaPad Vibe, a budget laptop that comes in two sizes and seven colors

• Lenovo Yoga Pro 5n and Yoga 9n 2-in-1, two creator laptops powered by Nvidia's RTX Spark platform

• Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 9 and ThinkBook 14x Gen 2, two fresh business laptops

• Acer Swift Air 16, a slim 16-incher

• Another version of the Dell 14S with more colors, less powerful processors, and a cheaper price tag

America has a new generative AI chatbot. Well, not really, but President Trump is pushing for citizens to stop clicking through government websites and just ask a chatbot.

On Tuesday, the White House launched a revamped America.gov, an AI-powered portal meant to be a single front door to the federal government. Trump signed an executive order establishing America.gov during the event, describing the site as "a restoration of America's founding promise."

It works like most AI chatbots. You enter a query (strictly related to the federal government), and the chatbot searches it up. According to the site, America.gov searches information across roughly 29,000 government websites and returns answers based on official federal sources.

Ask America.gov what powers it has, and you won't get far. When Mashable asked which language models it runs on, the chatbot replied: "I do not publish which language models power America." (Yes, it calls itself "America.")

U.S. Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia was more forthcoming on TV. He told CNBC's "Squawk Box" that the site is powered by artificial intelligence from Google's Gemini and Elon Musk's Grok.

How does America work?

While an ambitious search engine, there's not much you can do with it. The site's About page describes the launch as Phase 1, focused on making it faster to access government information. Phase 2 is slated for 2027 and will add the ability to apply, enroll and track progress directly in the chat. Every answer, the site says, links back to the official government page it came from.

The administration plans to expand the tool so people can begin or complete tasks such as renewing passports, enrolling in Medicare, checking student-loan information and reserving federal campsites. The site also says it will eventually help users find federal jobs, and a mobile app is on the roadmap. Those features are all promised for next year.

For now, the site advertises a handful of features:

• Answers in English, Spanish, or French.

• Voice input through a microphone icon.

• Step-by-step guidance on tasks like passport renewals.

• Help reading government documents. Users can upload a PDF of a form or letter, and the site says personal information will be automatically removed.

Naturally, one might have privacy concerns with a Trump-admin-backed AI chatbot. The site's "Why you can trust" section on the About page says it doesn't retain conversations, though some answers may be cached for up to 2 hours. Additionally, you don't need an account, and it says that it doesn't save names or IP addresses.

Those privacy features are well and good. How safe the website will be when users can eventually input personal, identifiable information for passport and medicare applications remains to be seen. The Guardian found in June that sites already deployed by the team behind America.gov were using commercial tools to track user behavior and data. Those tools did not appear to comply with the Privacy Act.

What is America?

Speaking of who designed the website, America.gov is the flagship product of the National Design Studio (NDS). The studio was created by Executive Order 14338, which Trump signed on Aug. 21, 2025, to redesign how the public interacts with government online. The site itself is operated by the General Services Administration (GSA), the agency that handles much of the federal government's technology.

Both organizations have deep ties to Elon Musk's controversial "Department of Government Efficiency." That endeavor was quietly dissolved in May after Musk departed the executive office during a feud with Trump.

The GSA was one of DOGE's earliest and hardest-hit targets. The agency dismissed more than 1,000 employees and set a goal of cutting staff by 63 percent in its Public Buildings Service division. DOGE also shut down 18F, a technology consulting unit within the GSA. Ironically, 18F was a team of government technologists focused on making federal websites easier to use.

AI chatbots have been part of the GSA's story ever since. In early 2025, DOGE rolled out a custom AI-powered chatbot, GSAi, to around 1,500 government workers as it continued to slash the federal workforce. One employee at the time told WIRED the tool gave "generic and guessable answers."

NDS, meanwhile, has become what WIRED called a landing pad for DOGE veterans. The studio is led by Gebbia, the Airbnb cofounder and longtime Musk associate who joined DOGE in February 2025. Like DOGE, it sits inside the Executive Office of the President.

According to WIRED, NDS's head of engineering is Edward Coristine, the DOGE staffer known as "Big Balls," who was 19 when he joined the government. Akash Bobba, another young engineer from DOGE's early core, moved over as well. WIRED also reported that NDS jobs don't appear on USAJobs, the federal government's hiring portal.

One engineer interviewed by Coristine told WIRED the process felt like it had no real structure. According to the engineer, Coristine pitched the job as a search for "hardcore engineers who can ship." At the time, the engineer said, Coristine told them the roughly 30-person NDS team didn't include a machine-learning engineer.

What can America talk about?

The administration says Americans can trust America because every answer comes "straight from the source." But on its first day, the answers tend to avoid anything politically inconvenient.

In Mashable's testing, it declined to answer questions that weren't directly related to federal government topics.

When Mashable asked who won the 2020 election, the chatbot said Joe Biden did. When asked whether Trump is in the Epstein files, the answer was yes. PBS NewsHour got the same results, finding that the site confirmed Trump's name is in the Epstein files and that Biden beat him in 2020. Appearing in the files is not itself evidence of wrongdoing, and Trump has denied any. The chatbot declined to comment on the U.S. stance on Israel and Palestine.

The AP notes that when Trump spoke at the launch event on Tuesday, the site was changing its answers. When asked again by the AP about the 2020 election, America replied that it couldn't answer "political questions."

PBS News wrote that America said Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration drew more people than Trump's first inauguration in 2017. On the election question, Mashable can confirm that the America chatbot still says Biden won the 2020 election. Regarding the inauguration attendance claim, America told Mashable that Obama drew 1.8 million people to his 2009 swearing-in, but would not provide an attendance figure for either of Trump's. On abortion, the chatbot gave a detailed response pertaining to laws in Texas. When asked for websites to access abortion drugs — legal to mail to Texas under its "shield laws" — the chatbot refused, stating that it can't give legal advice.

With Phase 2 set to launch in 2027, the America chatbot's ambitions include handling Americans' personal information and documents, such as Social Security numbers and birth certificates, to help them apply for passports and medical care. Whether Americans hand that information to a chatbot built by DOGE alumni and powered in part by Musk's AI may depend on who they trust to run it.

First Meta gave us Jolly. Now, OpenAI is letting you name your own little AI guy.

Less than a week after Meta introduced the cheerful mascot for its Muse AI assistant, OpenAI introduced Dots at its 2026 DevDay conference. Dots is an always-on AI agent represented by your choice of various colorful little characters.

"Dots are frontier intelligence that have your back," OpenAI wrote in its announcement. "Powered by GPT‑6 Astra, they have their own cloud computer, learn from feedback over time, and can work towards your goals 24/7."

Meet the little guys doing the big jobs

OpenAI’s launch materials show Dots in pink, blue, green, yellow, and purple, with different appearances. One dot wears glasses, while another headphones, and another a bow-tie. The examples are named Iggy, Felipe, Todd, Alfred, and Jojo, but you can give your own Dot whatever name you like.

The company calls Dots "an extension of you" and describes agents learning how you think and what good work looks like to you. Users can message them in ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams, or hop on a voice call.

For anyone juggling deadlines and unfinished projects, the appeal of having something that remembers the context and keeps the work moving. A familiar character gives that promise a cute face you can return to...and trust.

It also raises a question for the person connecting their accounts: How much confidence are they placing in the agent’s abilities, and how much comes from the feeling of familiarity? A name and a colorful avatar can make an interaction feel far more comfortable before a user has much experience actually judging the work.

Dots still needs supervision

OpenAI says users choose which apps their Dots can access and can set rules governing when they act independently or ask for approval. Users can inspect a Dot’s computer and follow its progress. The company says background "proactive research" uses read-only tools, and certain sensitive tasks, such as changing a password, remain with the user.

"Dots can still make mistakes, so always review consequential work," OpenAI writes.

Altman and OpenAI are pulling from a familiar strategy. After all, it’s a lot easier to ask users to trust an AI agent with their life when it looks like a little guy in a beret.

Minecraft Dungeons II is now out for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and on Steam.

Unfortunately, based on Reddit posts and Google Search trends, some gamers trying to play the latest Minecraft action-RPG adventure are reportedly running into some issues on launch day. Specifically, error code 0064 may appear when attempting to boot up the game.

Users have speculated that it could be due to launch-day server overload or a Microsoft authentication issue. The good news? Google Search trends for the error code only spiked for a brief period of time on Sept. 29, so the issue may be resolved.

What could cause this type of error? As of now, it's unclear exactly what the cause of error 0064 is, but we can safely rule out some possibilities.

Gamers have reported the error 0064 issue across platforms, so it's likely not a bug specific to any one console.

Error 0064 is also reportedly hitting users as they attempt to sign in, so if you're already in the game, you should be safe.

However, if you're seeing the Error 0064 message, some gamers have shared that restarting the game or simply spamming the login button eventually worked for them.

Other potential fixes include logging in and out of your Microsoft account, or if you're on a PC, you can try repairing the Minecraft Launcher.

To repair the Minecraft Launcher on a Windows PC, follow these steps:

• Go to Windows Search and type in Minecraft Launcher

• Right-click on Minecraft Launcher when it shows up and select App Settings

• Press Terminate to close the launcher and then click on the Repair option

• When that's complete, reopen the Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft Dungeons II

Users can also try uninstalling the game and reinstalling it, or contacting Minecraft Technical Support, if nothing else works.

Anthropic, one of the biggest AI companies in the world, is currently gearing up to go public. As the Claude-maker prepares for a potential blockbuster IPO later this year, Reuters has got its hands on the company's prospectus, which lays out Anthropic's financials and risks for investors.

According to the prospectus obtained by Reuters, Anthropic made $4.6 billion in revenue in 2025. That's twelve times its growth in the previous year.

But there's bad news, too: The AI company lost more than it brought in last year, Reuters reported. A lot more.

Anthropic reportedly lost a whopping $42 billion in 2025. Of that net loss, $8.06 billion was spent on operating costs in 2025, far higher than its 2024 operating costs of $2.98 billion, according to Reuters. In addition, the documents Reuters reviewed stated that compute and infrastructure costs from Anthropic's AI lab amounted to an additional $7.33 billion. 

Anthropic is hardly alone in spending more than it takes in, however. In July, after pouring money into AI development, Google reported its first quarter of negative cash flow since the company went public.

The AI industry is in the midst of a massive infrastructure build-out, with an estimated trillion dollars being spent on AI data centers, energy, and other resources in 2026 alone. Axios recently reported that the industry as a whole is expected to spend $10 trillion through 2032.

So, it's hardly surprising that Reuters reported that Anthropic's capital expenditures will only balloon in the years ahead. The IPO prospectus seen by Reuters stated that the company plans to spend $518 billion on "cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations" over the next few years. To make matters even more concerning for potential investors, about 80 percent of that $518 billion is allocated to non-cancelable deals.

Anthropic is currently eyeing a public offering that would put the company at a $2 trillion valuation.

The Brick is a trendy app-blocking device that makes it easier to stay off your phone; one Mashable writer used it to cut her screen time in half. It's a rather plain little gadget that's gray and blocky — pretty brick-like, some might say — but now, you can change that.

Brick has just launched Brick Cases, some colorful snap-on shells for its eponymous device. They're priced at $39 each and sold exclusively in the U.S. through Brick's website, the company announced on Instagram Sept. 22.

There are four Brick Case styles available, each with names that reference activities you should be doing instead of staring at a screen:

• Catch Rays (butter yellow)

• Unwind (brick red)

According to an FAQ on Brick's website, the Brick Case is merely an aesthetic upgrade for the Brick and doesn't change how it functions. "Swap colors and textures to match your space or your style — because Bricking is personal and now it looks like it," it reads.

The Brick contains an NFC chip that can block certain apps when you tap your phone to its surface. To "unbrick" your phone, you must tap it against the Brick again. Compared to traditional screen-time apps, "the physical limitation of the Brick adds an extra barrier," writes Mashable's Samantha Mangino, "making it especially effective at preventing you from overriding your screen time and staying truly distraction-free."

When it comes to watching sports, the playoffs are the best part of any season. That's also true for the WNBA, which kicked off with its first round on Sunday, with some star-studded Game 1 bouts. And even though the playoffs have only just begun, it's only taken 1 game for things to get weird already.

Three of the four higher seeds won as expected. The fourth result was the biggest upset the first round can produce: the No. 8 seed beating the No. 1 seed on its home floor. Add a historic performance from 4-time league MVP A'ja Wilson, a franchise-first win in the Bay, and a fresh round of league awards, and there's a lot to catch up on before the Game 2s tip off tonight.

Here's what happened on day one, and what to watch this week.

No. 8 Liberty makes history

The New York Liberty went into Minneapolis and beat the Minnesota Lynx 91-75 in a shocking blowout of the championship favorites. Per BK Reader, New York is now the first No. 8 seed in WNBA history to win a playoff game against a No. 1 seed. Before Sunday, the eighth seeds were 0-11 against the top seeds in the postseason.

Liberty Forward Breanna Stewart finished with 34 points and 12 rebounds, marking her third career 30-point playoff double-double, per ESPN. Stewart was given plenty of room to work as Lynx players Napheesa Collier, Natasha Howard, and Nia Brodie had each picked up four fouls. Plus, New York shooting 52 percent from three didn't hurt either.

On the other side, newly minted Rookie of the Year Olivia Miles had a rough playoff debut, finishing with 11 points on 3-of-12 shooting.

To be clear, the Liberty's win is not a case of the Lynx just having a bad day. The Liberty won the 2024 title (beating, yes, the Lynx in the Finals), and the roster is stacked with All-Stars and a former MVP in Stewart. With first-time head coach Chris DeMarco at the helm, the team had a bumpy year, plagued by injuries early in the season. In mid-July, with the team sitting at 13-12, the Liberty would finish the season 13-6, for an overall 26-18 record, to grab the W's final playoff spot. It was a crowded playoff race, too, with just four games separating the Liberty from fourth-place Atlanta.

A'ja Wilson absolutely cooked the Fever

If you needed a reminder about who the real star of the WNBA is, the defending champion Las Vegas Aces delivered just that. Vegas beat the Indiana Fever 102-85 behind a performance from A'ja Wilson that, per ESPN, had never been done before in the league.

"The four-time MVP is the first player in WNBA postseason history to have 20-plus points, three-plus blocks and two-plus steals in a half, and the first player in WNBA history — regular season or postseason — with 35 points, 15 rebounds and a 75% FG." - ESPN's Kareem Copeland

Wilson finished with 38 points, 16 rebounds, and four blocks, including 22 points in the first half, where she won one-on-one matchups against Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aliyah Boston. Wilson's co-stars Jackie Young (21 points, 10 assists) and Chelsea Gray (14 points, eight assists) made sure Indiana couldn't just let Wilson get hers and lock down everyone else. The Aces dropped 62 points in the first half alone.

Indiana, despite its name, just couldn't find a rhythm. The Fever's backcourt — Clark with 15 and Mitchell with 12 — shot for a combined 10-for-33 from the field. Boston, listed as questionable with a lower leg injury, still put up 18 points and eight rebounds.

Fever fans, understandably, are not having a good week.

How the WNBA playoffs work

New to the W, or just here because of the Liberty upset? Here's the quick version.

The top eight teams in the league make the playoffs, regardless of conference, and are seeded one through eight by record. The first round is a best-of-three series in a 1-1-1 format: the higher seed hosts Games 1 and 3, and the lower seed hosts Game 2. That's why the Liberty, despite being the 8-seed, gets to play at home on Tuesday.

The semifinals are best-of-five, and the Finals are best-of-seven. This will be the second year of the newly expanded WNBA Finals as a best-of-seven series, with 2025's Finals ending in a 4-0 sweep by the Las Vegas Aces over the Phoenix Mercury.

It's a different setup from the NBA, which sends eight teams from each conference (sorted in part by its play-in tournament) and plays every round as a best-of-seven series. The NBA did once have a shorter first round, though. From 1984 to 2002, the first round was best-of-five, then went to seven games in 2003. The change was seen as beneficial for higher-seeded teams as it decreased the likelihood of an upset.

A short series means there's very little room for a bad night, which is exactly why a single Game 1 like Sunday's can flip an entire bracket.

September is a big month for Big Tech events, where companies showcase their latest products. And now, OpenAI has just joined the party with DevDay 2026 in San Francisco.

The AI giant held its annual DevDay event on Tuesday and had a slew of announcements to make. OpenAI recently released GPT-6 Astra, an advanced new model, but it's also facing demands for much stricter regulation after its AI agents hacked third-party systems.

The biggest news of the day was the launch of Dots, a new AI agent to rival Meta's Muse AI.

Here are all the biggest announcements from OpenAI DevDay 2026.

Apparently, every AI company needs cartoon mascots nowadays.

OpenAI is taking a page out of Meta's book, and it's not just the animated characters. Dots are OpenAI's always-on AI personal assistant product, a la Meta's Muse.

According to OpenAI, Dots work and complete tasks across existing context and connected applications. As users work with their Dots assistant, it will learn from user feedback and improve on said tasks over time. Being an always-on AI agent, Dots work in the background via a secure cloud computer as users go about their day, OpenAI said.

For now, Dots are available to users on the Pro and Business Premium enterprise plans. The new AI agents began rolling out to eligible users today.

GPT-6.1 Sol

OpenAI also announced an upgraded version of GPT-6 Sol, the model that can be viewed as a more cost-efficient version of GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's most powerful model.

OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol has "exceptionally strong performance on agentic coding, computer use and professional work." It's nearly as intelligence as Astra but costs less than a quarter the price.

Pro 500 plan and Ultrafast

If you thought OpenAI's $200 per month plan was expensive, wait until you hear about Ultrafast.

OpenAI announced a new $500 per month plan called Pro 500. The new plan includes access to Ultrafast, a feature that allows OpenAI's Codex and Work apps to work on tasks faster. Ultrafast allows Codex and Work to generate up to 300 tokens per second, or 8 times faster.

"Ultrafast is our premium speed tier for workloads where speed matters most," OpenAI said.

The feature is also coming to the API, which will provide 6 times the standard speed.

ChatGPT Space

AI collaboration will now happen in a new dedicated space, aptly called ChatGPT Space. Colleagues can work together on ChatGPT Space, sharing context, and their Dot AI assistants can access this shared knowledge.

At Dev Day 2026, OpenAI's annual tech conference, the company made more than 20 announcements, but none bigger than the launch of Dots, always-on AI agents "built to handle everything."

The launch of Dots comes shortly after the launch of Apple's new Siri AI app and, more recently, Meta's Muse AI. Muse has jumped to the top of the app store charts. Like Muse, OpenAI said that each user's Dot runs on its own private and secure cloud computer, and also like Muse, Dots comes with cute little guys as its mascot.

"Dots are frontier intelligence that have your back," reads an announcement blog post from OpenAI. "Powered by GPT‑6 Astra, they have their own cloud computer, learn from feedback over time, and can work towards your goals 24/7. Through our ecosystem of plugins, they can readily connect to over 4,000 apps, giving them the tools to help wherever you need them."

In recent weeks, AI industry leaders have laid out a vision in which everyone will have their own personal AI agent handling all manner of tasks. Agentic AI has progressed rapidly in 2026 with the introduction of OpenClaw (originally known as Clawdbot, then Moltbot). As Mashable has reported, AI agents with control over a user's apps, devices, and data can accomplish a wide variety of tasks, but the greater their access, the greater the potential cybersecurity risk.

Just last week, a group of large banks warned that as customers hand over their devices and financial information to AI agents such as Dots, OpenClaw, and Muse, there is a growing risk of AI-enabled scams and fraud.

How do Dots work?

OpenAI announced that Dots will operate on its own private cloud, meaning users won't have to set up their AI agent on a local device.

"Dots can do nearly anything using their own cloud computer, their own browser, and the apps you’ve connected. You can open your dot’s computer at any time to inspect its work. Dots can connect to other devices in addition to their own, and you can also give your dot permission to connect and use your laptop, where it can then be useful directly alongside you."

OpenAI said that guardrails are built into the AI agents to protect users from "harmful behavior." In addition, OpenAI said that a monitoring system will be on guard of safety concerns, allowing the company to pause a Dot's work.

Before a Dot takes a sensitive action, such as changing a password, the company's auto-review⁠ system will check in with the user. Companies will also be able to create custom dots to serve their organization's needs.

OpenAI said that Dots would begin rolling out immediately, but the new AI agents will only be available on the company's $100/month Pro plan and for Business Premium users. Dots will not be available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK, OpenAI said. (Siri AI faces similar geographic restrictions due to Europe's stricter AI regulations.)

Customers on Pro and Business Premium plans will have access to their first Dot at no extra cost. In addition, OpenAI said that conversations with Dots will not count toward users' ChatGPT usage limits. However, on an FAQ page, the company clarified this is only in effect "for the next month".

Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, in April 2025 filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.

Singapore's government is trying its hand at matchmaking again.

The country's Government Technology Agency (GovTech) has launched FirstDate, a pilot dating service for singles aged 21 to 35. For now, it's open only to public officers, according to the service's website. Applications close Oct. 5.

FirstDate is designed as an alternative to endless swiping. Instead of browsing a stream of profiles, users fill out a questionnaire about their interests, habits, values, and preferences. The service then sends them one match per cycle (the time it takes to mutually accept and presumably meet up). Each match includes a compatibility score, a brief description of the person, and a personal note.

The matching relies on the Gale-Shapley algorithm, a well-known mathematical method for pairing people based on their ranked preferences. It's the same approach used in some school admissions and medical residency matching systems. Most notably, the Match Group-owned Hinge also uses a version of it for its app — and Hinge is the top dating app in Singapore, according to SimilarWeb, followed by Tinder and Bumble.

Once matched, both people receive a text message and have 72 hours to accept the match. Contact details are exchanged only if both say yes. Couples who meet up can try "Date Quests," suggested activities meant to break the ice. Afterward, users get a short survey asking how things went, including whether they actually met in person. GovTech's site acknowledges that compatibility on paper doesn't guarantee chemistry.

Every account is verified through Singpass, the national digital ID system, which is meant to weed out fake profiles. A user's profile is only visible to their match. GovTech says user data complies with government security standards and won't be sold or shared with third parties except where required or permitted by law. Users can deactivate their accounts and request that their data be deleted.

The pilot arrives as Singapore's birth rate hits a new low, according to the Singaporean newspaper The Straits Times. The country's total fertility rate fell to 0.87 children per woman in 2025, down from 1.24 a decade earlier. In April, the government announced a new workgroup tasked with addressing falling birth rates, which is expected to report its findings by early 2027, The Straits Times reported.

It's also not the first time the government has played matchmaker. In 1984, Singapore set up the Social Development Unit to help university graduates meet and marry. Its successor, the Social Development Network, shut down its website in 2023. More recently, the Ministry of Social and Family Development helped organize For Real Fest, a Gen Z friendship festival that started in 2024 and was pitched as a response to youth loneliness, according to The Straits Times.

Whether FirstDate expands beyond the civil service will likely depend on how the pilot goes. For now, GovTech is asking its early users to tell it whether anything sparked.

The retro aesthetic audio brand Nothing released its first pair of over-ear headphones just over a year ago, and already, they're back with improvements.

While the Nothing Headphone (1) Pro retain the same distinctive retro-rectangular look of the Headphone (1), the brand brought some updates that separate the newer model as the premium one. Nothing also claims to have upped the noise cancellation power by 40 percent, thanks to the 10-microphone system with more optimally placed mics. Unlike the older headphones, all the microphones are placed inward on the ear cup, meaning less interference from wind and airflow.

The headline with these headphones, however, likely lies with the broad listening experience. The triple driver architecture isn't one too common on headphones, but it's designed to provide the most robust listening experience. In the companion app, you have the option in the equalizer to tune the main drivers or the precision driver specifically.

In addition to the drivers, Nothing included five different modes of dynamic spatial audio, optimized for different genres of music.

If you're into audio editing, music mixing, or any aspect of audio production, Nothing also included a Flat EQ mode, which is designed to provide the most faithful reproduction of the original audio as possible. The headphones also feature an on-ear switch for this mode on the interior of the left ear cup.

Speaking of on-ear switches, it's worth noting that something that hasn't really changed between the two headphones is the excellent on-ear controls.

Nothing Headphone (1) Pro: First impressions

Though I haven't had much time with these headphones so far, immediately I could tell they were more comfortable than the Headphone (1), which I could not wear comfortably for more than an hour. Nothing claims the Pro headphones have 50 percent softer ear cushions and an overall lighter frame, both of which feel accurate and make the experience of using these headphones significantly more pleasant.

I've yet to put them through the wringer on the ANC front, but claims of improvements there also feel accurate so far — even the standard sounds of my apartment, like my own typing and the AC running, are basically impossible to hear when I'm streaming audio with the ANC on.

What I'm really looking forward to testing extensively is the robust sound profile. These headphones offer an impressive amount of customization, from the custom equalizer, presets, spatial audio options, and flat EQ mode. As a freelance podcast producer and editor, I'm particularly interested in trying out that last mode against my usual editing headphones.

Ultimately, I'm struggling to come up with critiques in my first days of testing, which I didn't experience with the Headphone (1) — we'll see how that develops over the rest of my testing period.

Tom Cruise has built his long and wildly successful career as an A-list movie star on his irrefutable charisma, incredible stunt-work capabilities, and a refusal to age. From early dramas like Top Gun, A Few Good Men, and Jerry Maguire, he defined the American hero, fighting the good fight in the face of death, failure, and a bellowing Jack Nicholson. Across Mission: Impossible movies, he created a brand that would define his legacy as an unstoppable force at the box office worldwide. But one honor he hasn't yet earned is an Academy Award. 

Make no mistake. He's been nominated for an acting Oscar three times — twice for Best Actor (Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire) and once for Best Supporting Actor (Magnolia). (That he was snubbed completely for Interview with the Vampire is an outrage that still echoes across the decades.) And while the Academy gave him an Honorary Award in 2026, Digger feels intensely as if it's Cruise's big swing to win at last. And I cannot imagine Iñárritu's latest will earn Cruise Oscar gold. 

On paper, it could. Iñárritu's Biutiful, Birdman, and The Revenant led to Academy Award nominations for Javier Bardem and Michael Keaton, and a win for Leonardo DiCaprio. However, his last film, Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, received less praise and only an Oscar nod for cinematography. And Digger, despite its energetic promotional campaign, has more in common with Bardo than Birdman in terms of the director's indulgences.

To his credit, Cruise bounds out of his comfort zone in this role. His signature swagger and good looks are caked in head-to-toe prosthetics that make him look older, fatter, and balding. And to the credit of the hair, make-up, and visual effects team, the transformation is seamless. Reminiscent of his makeover as a surly producer in the showbiz satire Tropic Thunder, Cruise doesn't hold back in playing an American titan who is also a raging asshole. 

Digger Rockwell is an oil magnate who has earned unimaginable wealth and privilege through drilling. But when one of his sites in Greenland causes an ecological disaster that could have massive fallout, he's thrown into damage control with his green-energy-pushing sister Emma (Sandra Hüller), an ornery American president (John Goodman), a high-strung scientist (Riz Ahmed), and a barrage of wide-eyed yes-men played by celebrated character actors including Michael Stuhlbarg and Burn Gorman. 

Like Adam McKay's 2021 satire Don't Look Up, Digger becomes a satire about climate change, studded with famous faces, including Emma D'Arcy as a put-upon assistant and Jesse Plemons as a Digger admirer. Unfortunately, also like Don't Look Up, Digger thinks itself wildly clever, when it's really a preachy lecture with splashy cinema spectacle. Far from an effective argument about the graveness of our current situation, it plays as a finger-wagging scold of the common man for presumed apathy, while the film is doggedly not about the common man, but about the 1% who trades in the future of the planet for financial success now. 

However, even if the snag of snarling politics doesn't put off Academy voters, Cruise's attempts at comedy might. It's not that Cruise can't be funny. Again, look to Tropic Thunder, Interview with the Vampire, Risky Business, and even Rain Man. It's that Digger is astonishingly unfunny. It's a farce without jokes, save fart jokes. The screenplay — which lists a handful of screenwriters, including Iñárritu — achieves absurdity, but rarely laughs. For instance, the film begins with Digger caring for his very, very close-to-death cat Maggie, who is less an animal and more a body-horror puppet of festering wounds, clumpy fur, and a facial expression that meows, "Kill me." The prolonged attention Digger gives this cat as she defecates on his bed, his silk pajamas, and anything else he sets her near, is probably intended to be funny. But it's bizarre, as if the whimsy of Wes Anderson had rotted into a grotesque mockery or the brilliance of Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove were smothered in scatological humor.

Aside from Digger being preachy, gross, and annoying in its cynicism, it's also afflicted by putting a leading man in a character actor role. Yes, Digger is the lead. Yes, Cruise slides into a thick Texan accent as earnestly as he does the prosthetics. But the churlishness that's meant to be both revolting and compelling in this clownish carnage machine rings false. It's hard to watch this and not imagine what Paul Giamatti or Stephen Root or even co-stars Goodman or Stuhlbarg might have done with such a role. 

In their bit parts, they are more engaging than Cruise manages to be. Goodman is in his comfort zone, hollering wrath and vengeance as he has in a slew of terrific Coen Bros movies. Stuhlbarg, who can break your heart with one monologue (as he did in Call Me by Your Name), brings subtle humor as a feckless vice president. Hüller is explosive as the only family member who can outshout Digger. Plemons is satisfyingly creepy, while D'Arcy brings screen presence and nuance to a barely written role. But Ahmed is outstanding. 

Perhaps no surprise as the British Pakistani actor has a fine ear for satire, as shown in Four Lions and Nightcrawler. Ahmed doesn't go too big, instead grounding Cruise's showy performance with his sturdy, silent disdain. When his Dr. Ganesh finally has a moment to deliver a monologue of his own, it's both funny, heartbreaking, and an excellent example of acting drunk. If there's an acting nom coming for Digger, my money would be on Ahmed (who was previously nominated in 2021 for his superb performance in Sound of Metal). 

Of course, there will be Cruise defenders who will argue the too-muchness of his Digger is exactly the point. Iñárritu's film tries to lampshade its own outrageousness with layers of jolting reveals that urge the audience to reconsider much of what they've seen. But Digger's convoluted construction ultimately mocks an art form that other contenders this season celebrate. It's a movie that works hard to be clever, and in doing so, loses sight of being interesting, entertaining, or even challenging. It just becomes a barrage of ideas, and monologues, and plot twists that try the audience's patience while chiding them for their presumed apathy.

In the end, Digger will certainly bewilder and will likely prove polarizing. The one place where I suspect Digger's detractors and fans will agree is that its sound design and production design are incredible. 

In the sound design, Maximilian Behrens brings an eerie heightened humor into a war room scenario, where the sound of yes-men turning their chairs is full of the creaks of wood and the squeaks of metal. In a pivotal moment of human history, these men are so silent that the sounds of their luxurious setting echo loudly; it's a scathing and comedic condemnation. Later, the sound of eating sushi plays as a squishy reminder of mankind's recklessly ravenous domination of the planet. 

Production designer Dennis Gassner creates a world around Digger that is preposterously bedecked in signs of wealth and excess that also echo this theme. Taxidermied animals line not only his walls, but also his ceilings. His boots aren't leather but snakeskin, or perhaps something more exotic. His chosen paintings are of a lion mauling its prey. All of these keenly build the story of Digger Rockwell. 

This makes Digger so frustrating. Iñárritu clearly had a big budget to work with, and he used it toward a dazzling production design and assembling an incredible cast. But this revered director led his movie star astray in a self-indulgent, ugly, and cynical parable that's sure to irritate rather than educate, entertain, or ignite change. And actually, that might have been Iñárritu's point all along. And damn, I'd hate if that's the world we live in, where even one of the most celebrated living directors thinks art is useless in effecting change. 

Digger opens in theaters on Oct 2.
