Happy New Year! We hope your holidays were wonderfully festive and that you are all well.

It is amazing to share with you that this month is the 10th! anniversary. I remember when Dave first said that he had an idea for MaxButtons as we were working on another plugin. That’s 10,000 customers ago. Since Bas took over the development MaxButtons and MaxButtons Pro have continued to be the best WordPress button plugin you can use. I want to personally thank you for your support on behalf of the entire Max Foundry team for your support of MaxButtons.

I am also really pleased to announce the release of MaxButtons Pro Version 9. The biggest feature addition in this release is our Link Manager.

Link Manager

You’re now able to see which buttons you have, which URLS are in use, and where they are in use! After upgrading to the latest version, you’ll see a new tab appear in your MaxButtons Pro Dashboard.

Under the “MaxButtons” sub tab you’ll find all your buttons and the URL associated in the button editor. The views and clicks represent the default URL only.

The “Links” subtab is where you’ll find all links loaded via MaxButtons PRO. This includes URLs defined by shortcodes once they have been loaded once. You can also see the last time any button was loaded on the frontend and/or registered a view.

Note: A link must be viewed at least once (get one visitor) before it will show. Pages without visitors may not show up.

In the “Settings” subtab you need to enable logging to start tracking. You can also exclude logged in users, enable anonymous tracking and even ignore buttons that are connected via Google Analytics, to keep your metrics clean.

MaxButtons Pro V9 also comes with various bug fixes and general improvements, so don’t delay, upgrade today! You can update confidently, directly through your WordPress Dashboard under plugins. If an update is not available, simply log in to your MaxButtons account, renew any licenses where required and then recheck for the update in WordPress.

Again, thank you for all of your support over the past 10 years,

Improved SEO Score with MaxButtons Pro v 8.6

There is no better time to update or upgrade!

Hey folks!

Here at MaxButtons, we believe there is always room for improvement and MaxButtons Pro v 8.6 brings you improvement where it matters most, when it matters most; with your SEO Score.

It’s difficult enough to keep up with the Jones’s when talking SEO Score, so with this update we’ve added media=”screen” to the output of the CSS tag when the option ‘Use CSS file instead of inline output in footer’ is on, which adds a media meta tag to the external stylesheet. No fancy footwork required from you, just us playing our part to keep Google happy.

As always though, that’s not all. We’ve also improved on and applied a few bug fixes to both MaxButtons and MaxButton Pro and added two new options to our Social Share Buttons add-on!

MaxButtons and MaxButtons Pro Updates and bug fixes:

[PRO Only] Added – Media meta tag added to external stylesheet for improved SEO.

[PRO Only] Fixed – Icon color hover not showing in Live Preview

Updated – Loading button editor has better flow of hidden items (fades)

Updated – Alpha Color Picker to version 3

Fixed – Notices on argument order ( PHP8+ )

Fixed – Hiding the ‘add button’ in the classic editor no longer causes an issue with Gutenberg.

Fixed – Loading calendar in a widget during init time no longer triggers a fatal error.

Please Note: Version 8.6 no longer supports PHP 5.x with this release, only PHP 7.x and higher.

Social Share Buttons:

In case you’ve somehow never been introduced to this awesome add-on –> our WordPress Social Share Buttons is an add-on for MaxButtons that lets you use the same great MaxButtons interface to display flexible social media share buttons anywhere on your WordPress site, complete with different positions for different content types, custom share URLs, and flexible share counts.

Added – Option to add telephone number as network

Added – Option to add LinkedIn Company URL

Don’t forget to check out our Every Button We’ve Got deal to get access to all of the button packs in our library and log in to your MaxButtons account to start downloading them today!

If you’re trying to get visitors to sign up for your email list, register at your site, or send you a message, using a two-step opt-in is a powerful approach.

With a two-step opt-in, your visitor clicks on a button to open a popup that displays a form to collect more information. This can actually boost your conversion rate (vs showing the form right away) because it harnesses something called the Zeigarnik effect to make people more likely to fill out your form.

There are also plenty of other niche uses for an onclick popup on your WordPress site that go beyond forms.

But unless you know how to code, this functionality can be difficult to achieve for most webmasters. To help, we’re going to show you exactly how to open a popup after a visitor clicks a button using two free WordPress plugins:

MaxButtons

Popup Maker

No code required!

As the names imply, you’ll use MaxButtons to create the button, Popup Maker to create the popup, and then you’ll link them together through a simple integration.

Let’s dive in!

*You can also apply these principles to many other popular popup plugins. We just chose Popup Maker because it has the most installs at WordPress.org.

Step 1: Create Your Popup With Popup Maker

To get started, you should first create the popup that you want to display using the free Popup Maker plugin:

We’re not going to cover every single option in the Popup Maker interface because it’s a bit outside the scope of this post. But if you need help, Popup Maker has great support docs. This “Creating Your First Popup” guide is a good place to start.

If you’re looking to display a form in your popup, you can use a form plugin and then simply add the form’s shortcode to your popup. Caldera Forms is a good free option for creating flexible forms.

You do not need to worry about setting any Triggers or Targeting for this specific popup. The method that you’ll use to open the popup with MaxButtons makes these unnecessary:

Once you’ve finished designing your popup and its content, make sure to Publish it.

Step 2: Create Your Button With MaxButtons

Once you’ve installed and activated the MaxButtons plugin, go to MaxButtons → Add New to create your button.

Again, we’re not going to cover every single setting in the general button interface. But if you want some help designing your button, our post on how to create buttons in WordPress has a full explanation of every single option in the MaxButtons interface.

In the Basics section, make sure to enter the Text for your button. You can leave the URL field blank, though (remember – the button will open a popup, so the URL is unnecessary):

You can style your button as desired using the various settings below that. As you make style changes, you’ll see them reflected in the live Preview.

The only other setting that you must configure is in the Advanced section.

Specifically, you need to add some text to the Extra classes box. This is what tells the button to open the popup that you created with Popup Maker.

To find the text that you need, click on Popup Maker in your WordPress dashboard (use a new tab so that you still have access to the MaxButtons interface). Then, look for the CSS Classes column:

Copy one of the values in that column (it doesn’t matter which value you use). Then, go back to the MaxButtons interface and paste that value into the Extra classes box*. It should look something like this:

And that’s it! Once you’re happy with how the rest of your button looks, make sure to Save it.

*You can also use the Custom Rel Tag and data fields options to connect to other types of popup plugins.

Step 3: Add Button With Shortcode

Now, all you need to do is add the MaxButtons shortcode where you want the button to appear. You can add this shortcode in a:

Post

Page

Text widget

Page builder

Anywhere else that accepts shortcodes

You can see an example of the finished functionality below (you can adjust the dimensions of your popup with Popup Maker – you’re not forced to make it full screen like our example):

If you want to open the same popup but with different text, you can use the text shortcode parameter to change the button’s text.

For example, modifying your shortcode like this…

…causes the button text to change. The popup functionality will function exactly the same as before, though.

Recapping What You Learned

Let’s end with a quick recap of the most important steps to implement this functionality. Beyond using the regular Popup Maker and MaxButton interfaces, you should:

Ignore the Triggering and Targeting options in Popup Maker

Ignore the URL box in MaxButtons

Add the CSS Class from the Popup Maker interface to the Extra classes box in the Advanced section of MaxButtons

Then, you can use the MaxButtons shortcode to add the button/popup anywhere on your site. And you can also use the text shortcode parameter to reuse the same button with different button texts.

We hope you found this guide useful. Now, go create something awesome with your new knowledge!

Struggling with how to create a shortcode button in WordPress? Shortcode buttons are super convenient for quickly inserting stylish, attention-grabbing buttons in your WordPress content. But WordPress doesn’t include any functionality to create a shortcode button by default.

To help, I’m going to show you two different ways to create a shortcode button in WordPress.

First, I’ll show you how to do it using your own code. Then, I’ll show you a more beginner-friendly method using a plugin.

How To Manually Create A Shortcode Button In WordPress With Code

This method is not very beginner-friendly, so we don’t recommend it for people without at least a basic understanding of CSS.

That’s because, while we can give you the exact PHP code snippet that you need, you’ll need to be able to figure out the CSS by yourself to make the button actually look how you want it to.

If you don’t know what CSS is, you should probably skip ahead to the plugin method in the next section.

Otherwise, let’s continue!

Step 1: Add PHP For Button Shortcode

To get started, you need to add a PHP code snippet that creates your button shortcode. We recommend that you put this code snippet into a plugin like Code Snippets. But you can also use your child theme’s functions.php file:

Essentially, this code snippet creates a new
[custombutton]
shortcode. When you use that shortcode, you can specify a link and title (as well as whether not to open it in a new tab).

Then, you can style the button by using the
custombutton
CSS class.

Step 2: Test Button Shortcode

After you’ve added the above code snippet, try creating a new button following the format below to test if your shortcode button is working:

[custombutton url="https://maxbuttons.com/" target="self" text="Go To MaxButtons"]

When you publish or preview the post, you should see a link that has the
custombutton
CSS class (you can verify this by looking at the source code):

Step 3: Add CSS Styling For custombutton Class

At this point, your button shortcode is working. But you aren’t seeing any styling because you haven’t added styling for the
custombutton
CSS class yet.

So to finish things out, you just need to add some CSS, which you can do via the Additional CSS option in the WordPress Customizer.

For example, here’s how the button looks with some basic CSS styling added:

How To Create A Shortcode Button In WordPress With MaxButtons

MaxButtons is a free WordPress plugin that makes it easy to create one or more shortcode buttons without the need for any special coding knowledge (which the manual method requires).

Instead, you build your button using the plugin’s beginner-friendly interface. Then, you can reuse that button as many times as you want with different combinations of button text/URLs.

To get started, install and activate the free MaxButtons plugin. Then, follow the tutorial below…

Step 1: Create A New Button

To create your first button, go to MaxButtons → Add New:

That will take you to the Button Editor.

Step 2: Configure Your Button

The Button editor is simple to use and entirely code-free. Essentially, you use the options on the left to configure your button’s styling and functionality. Then, you can see a live preview of what each change does on the right side of the screen:

If you want a more in-depth look at some of the settings in this section, we recommend that you read our complete guide to creating buttons with MaxButtons. It goes through each section option by option.

Once you’ve finished styling your button, make sure to save your changes

Step 3: Insert Button With Shortcode

To access your button’s shortcode, you can either click on the main MaxButtons option in your WordPress dashboard sidebar:

Or, you can use the new Add Button button in the WordPress editor:

Once you click the button, you select your button and click Insert Button into Editor:

Then, you can enter the actual URL and button text that you want to use for this specific instance of your button (this is what allows you to reuse the same shortcode button for different URLs/texts):

And that’s it! When you publish your post or page, you should see the actual button on the front-end.

To reuse the same button in different places, just repeat this step*. And you can always create additional button styles by repeating the entire process!

*You can also skip the Add Button interface and manually input the shortcode by following the same url=”URL” text=”TEXT” format.

Final Thoughts On Creating Shortcode Buttons In WordPress

As you can see, the manual method doesn’t add any new functionality and complicates the process a good bit. And even after finishing the manual implementation, you still insert buttons in an identical manner to MaxButtons.

For that reason, using MaxButtons will not only save you time and eliminate the need for custom CSS, but it will also make it a lot easier to create multiple different buttons as needed.

No matter which method you prefer, we hope you found this tutorial helpful. Enjoy your new buttons!

If you want your visitors to be able to download files from your site, it’s a good idea to create a dedicated download button. It will make it easier for your visitors, and they will more likely read your offering. The latest version, MaxButtons PRO 8.5, now allows to create a download button in WordPress with just one click.

This will work beautifully if you want to offer your visitors the latest leaflet, a menu, or other downloads. Read what else is new in version 8.5

In the button editor you can simply activate the URL is download option and put the file for download in the URL field. To make it even more simple, the ‘select site content’ button next to the URL now also will find all your documents and attachments.

More information about creating a download button you can find on our documentation page!

What else new in version 8.5

Apart from several bug fixes, it’s now also possible to use shortcodes in MaxButtons directly. This can be a good idea when you have shortcodes which return text. Be careful when using shortcodes, if they return HTML or perform other functions you can break your buttons.

When using Custom CSS in the button editor, it will now be applied to the live preview as well

We have also added more ways to use variables in MaxButtons. This will make integrations with your theme or plugins a bit easier, since you won’t directly have to involve using PHP . More on using variables you can find in the dynamic button documentation.

If you’ve gone through the trouble of creating buttons for your WordPress site, you probably want to know whether or not people are actually clicking on those buttons, right?

Understanding which of your buttons are racking up the most clicks helps you know what works and, equally as important, what doesn’t work.

But if you want to track button clicks on your WordPress site, you’re going to have to put in a little prep work. Depending on your desired method, this work ranges from inputting a few bits of text in the MaxButtons plugin, editing HTML code, or digging into the complicated Google Tag Manager interface.

No matter what your preferred method is – we’ll show you how to do it for your WordPress site.

What You Need To Track Button Clicks On WordPress

We’re going to show you 99% of what you need to do to track button clicks on WordPress. But there is one thing that you will need before jumping into this guide:

A Google Analytics account with the Google Analytics tracking code added to your website. If you already have that – you’re set to move on!

If not, you can read this post for a detailed guide on how to setup and configure Google Analytics.

How To Track Button Clicks With Google Analytics Event Tracking

Google Analytics Event Tracking is a feature that lets you track how users interact with your content. As the name suggests, this tracking comes in the form of “events.”

While events can be all kinds of different things, for this article, we’re specifically interested in “clicks” as the event that’s tracked.

With Event Tracking, you can track individual button clicks on your WordPress site and, if desired, even assign a numeric value to each click.

Once you get it set up, you’ll be able to view Google Analytics reports like below for all the button clicks on your WordPress site:

Event Tracking lets you collect four pieces of information about each event – two pieces are required, and the other two pieces are optional:

eventCategory – required – the object that your visitor interacted with. For this use, it would be something like “button”, or maybe even a specific type of button on your site

eventAction – required – what the visitor did. For this use, it would be something like “click” (because that’s what people do with buttons!)

eventLabel – optional – lets you add additional categorization. For example, you could tag some button clicks as “affiliate link”

eventValue – optional – lets you add a numeric value to the click. If you just want to track which buttons a user clicks on, you probably don’t need to worry about this one

How To Track WordPress Button Clicks With MaxButtons Pro

MaxButtons is a free plugin that helps you create stylish buttons on WordPress. If you purchase MaxButtons Pro, you’ll gain the ability to easily add Google Analytics Event Tracking to your WordPress buttons right from the MaxButtons interface.

To get started, create a regular button using MaxButtons. If you’re not sure how to do that, we wrote a detailed guide on how to create WordPress buttons with MaxButtons.

Once you’ve created your button, all you need to do is:

Scroll down to the bottom of the Button editor interface

Find the Google Event Tracking for Button Clicks box

Turn the Enable Event Tracking toggle on

Then, you need to fill in the information for Category, Action, Label, and Value. If you remember from a second ago, only Category and Action are required.

Let’s say that you want to specifically track a group of buttons that allow your visitors to purchase different eBooks on your site.

In total, you sell 5 different eBooks, with one of them being named “Beginner’s Guide To Credit Card Churning”.

Here’s a good way that you could configure the four boxes:

Category – “Buy Now Button” – this indicates that this is one of the many buttons that lets a visitor purchase an eBook

Action – “click” – this indicates that the visitor actually clicked on the button

Label – “Beginner’s Guide To Credit Card Churning” – this indicates that the visitor clicked on the specific buy now button for the “Beginner’s Guide To Credit Card Churning” eBook. You could also put the specific page where the button is located (e.g. homepage)

Value – blank – while you could add a value here, making this value helpful/accurate can be a little tricky

Finally, the last thing you need to do is choose whether you want a button click to be counted as an:

Interaction Event – a user who clicks on the button will not be counted as a “bounce”

Non-interaction Event – whether or not a user clicks on this event will not be factored into the bounce rate. That is, a user can click on the button and still count as a bounce

Most of the time, we recommend leaving this setting turned on because it gives a more accurate look at how engaged your visitors are. If you’re not sure what we’re talking about when we say “bounce rate,” we recommend just leaving it turned on (the default).

Once you input all the details, all you need to do is save and insert your button like normal using the MaxButtons shortcode.

Now, whenever a user clicks on that button, you’ll be able to view that data in your Google Analytics account by going to Behavior → Events:

How To Track Button Clicks Manually By Adding HTML/JavaScript

If you’re not using MaxButtons, it’s possible, though a bit time-consuming, to manually add the same code to the buttons on your site.

Essentially, you need to add this short code snippet inside the HTML for your link:

onclick=”ga(‘send’, ‘event’, ‘CATEGORY’, ‘ACTION’, ‘LABEL’, {nonInteraction: true});”

Let’s go back to the example from the MaxButtons section.

If you wanted to track a similar set of data, your complete button HTML would look something like this:

<a href=”https://www.yourebook.com” class=”buybutton” onclick=”ga(‘send’, ‘event’, ‘Buy Now Button”’, ‘click’, ‘Beginner’s Guide To Credit Card Churning’, {nonInteraction: false});”>Buy This eBook</a>

If you’re working with the WordPress Editor, you’ll need to exclusively add this code in the Text tab:

If, at any point, you switch to the Visual tab, the WordPress Editor will strip out your Event Tracking code, which is a pretty big pain.

For that reason, using MaxButtons is often a simpler way to implement Event Tracking for buttons that you use in regular WordPress content.

How To Track Button Clicks On WordPress With Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager is another way that you can track button clicks on WordPress with Event Tracking.

It’s not very user friendly (in fact, we don’t recommend it for beginners), but for power users, Google Tag Manager provides a flexible way to track button clicks on WordPress.

To use Google Tag Manager, you’ll need to:

Sign up for a Google Tag Manager account

Add the Google Tag Manager snippets in your header and after the opening <body> tag on your site, respectively

Both of these steps are in addition to already having Google Analytics configured on your WordPress site (or, you can also use Google Tag Manager to add the Google Analytics tracking code, if desired).

Once you have the Google Tag Manager codes active on your WordPress site, here’s how to use Google Tag Manager to track button clicks in WordPress.

Step 1: Create A New Tag

In your Google Tag Manager workspace, click the New Tag button:

Step 2: Set Tag Configuration

Next, click in the Tag Configuration box to choose the type of tag. Select Universal Analytics:

Then, select Event under the Track Type box and enter the Category, Action, and Label (this are the same terms as used in the previous sections):

Step 3: Choose When To Trigger Event

Once you finish the tag configuration, scroll down and click on the Triggering box to set when the tag should “fire” (that is, when Google Tag Manager should log a new click).

Then, click the + button in the top-right corner:

Click in the Trigger Configuration box to open another set of options and choose Just Links:

If you want to track every single button click with the same category, then you can stop now. But if you just want to track specific button clicks, you need to check the box for Some Link Clicks. Then, you can use the drop-down to trigger the Event by various criteria:

For example, to only track button clicks on your “yourdomain.com/ebook-sale” page, you could enter “ebook-sale” in the Page URL contains box

Another thing that you could do is only target certain buttons based on each button’s CSS class.

Once you’re finished, click SAVE in the top right corner. Then click SAVE again:

Step 4: Publish Your Tag

Almost done! Now, all that’s left to do is publish your tag. To do that, first click the SUBMIT button in the top-right corner:

Then, give it a name and description and click PUBLISH:

You’re Ready To Track Button Clicks In WordPress

If you’re just looking for the simplest way to track button clicks on your WordPress site, the MaxButtons Pro interface lets you quickly get started without needing to dig into code or deal with the fairly complicated Google Tag Manager interface.

Otherwise, manual Event Tracking is the next simplest solution – you just need to remember to avoid the Visual tab of the WordPress Editor. And if you’re a power user, you can dig into the Google Tag Manager interface – but casual users are definitely better off steering clear.
