The program will use archival interviews and recordings to trace Kirk’s rise from the founding of Turning Point USA to his emergence as a nationally prominent conservative activist and media personality.

Among the material featured will be audio from Kirk’s first interview with longtime Salem host Dennis Prager, recorded when Kirk was 22.

Salem said the program will rely heavily on Kirk’s own voice, along with accounts from people who knew him during different stages of his career.

“There was nobody quite like Charlie. He connected with young people in a way few others could and turned that connection into a movement,” Salem Media CEO David Santrella said.

Santrella described the anniversary as personal for many within the company, saying Salem watched Kirk develop from a young activist into a national conservative figure and that he became a friend to people within the organization.

“One year later, we still miss him terribly,” Santrella said. “This special gives listeners a chance to hear Charlie again and remember the incredible life he lived.”

Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012 and became closely associated with conservative political organizing among young Americans.

WASHINGTON, DC — The National Association of Broadcasters is welcoming plans for the U.S. House to hold a standalone vote on the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, marking a significant step forward for legislation aimed at keeping AM radio available in new vehicles.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise plans to bring the measure to the House floor during the week of Sept. 14, according to NAB. The legislation, H.R. 979 in the House and S. 315 in the Senate, would direct the U.S. Department of Transportation to require access to AM broadcast stations in passenger vehicles sold in the United States.

“America’s broadcasters applaud House Majority Leader Steve Scalise for his announcement to bring the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act to the House floor for a standalone vote the week of Sept. 14,” NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt said. “This is an important step forward for legislation that has earned overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress and across the country.”

The legislation is led in the House by Reps. Gus Bilirakis, R-FL, and Frank Pallone, D-NJ, and in the Senate by Sens. Ted Cruz, R-TX, and Ed Markey, D-MA. The proposal has attracted broad bipartisan backing as broadcasters and public safety advocates have pushed Congress to ensure automakers continue providing AM reception in new vehicles.

NAB said in July that the legislation had 61 Senate cosponsors and 316 House cosponsors, with support from more than 125 organizations. The association has argued that AM remains particularly important during emergencies because stations can provide news, warnings and other information when communities are affected by severe weather, natural disasters or other disruptions.

LeGeyt thanked congressional leaders and the bill's sponsors for advancing the measure, saying AM listeners have also played a role in building support.

“Our listeners have also made their voices heard loud and clear: AM radio is an indispensable lifeline during emergencies, a trusted source of news and information, and a vital connection for communities nationwide,” LeGeyt said.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee previously included the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act in its bipartisan surface transportation reauthorization package. A standalone floor vote would provide another path for the legislation to advance.

“Now is the time to finish the job,” LeGeyt said, urging House members to support the measure and preserve AM access as a public safety resource.

The National Association of Broadcasters represents the interests of local radio and television stations and advocates on legislative, regulatory and technology issues affecting broadcasters.

Stay tuned to the MJR Morning Brief for updates as the AM radio legislation heads toward a House vote.

Just as context.

In this video, I share 10 things you may not know about me — the experiences that shaped the way I think about leadership, resilience, radio, mental health, and story.

Here’s the list:

1. Life on the road in a 5th wheel RV with my golden retriever, Kismet

2. Growing up in the BOSS Radio era at KHJ Los Angeles

3. Helping build and operate five family-owned radio stations in California (including KLLY-FM)

4. Two decades in FCC compliance consulting, working with thousands of stations

5. A cardiac health wake-up call that changed my direction

6. Losing two brothers and both of my parents — and learning resilience the hard way

7. Going back to school to earn a master’s degree in psychology

8. Becoming a confidential sounding board for broadcasters navigating pressure and burnout

9. Creating practical mental health and leadership tools like Apple A Day, Licensed2BBadass, and Flipping the Format on the Fear of Failure

10. Writing novels — including Dead Air: The Day the Music Died — because story reaches places instruction can’t

When you step back and look at it all, it might seem like separate paths. It isn’t.
