Investment extends Matla mine life

The new operation forms part of the Matla Life of Mine Project (MLOMP), a R5.236 billion investment designed to provide continued access to remaining coal reserves, extend the life of the mine and support coal supply under the recently extended Coal Supply Agreement (CSA) with Eskom.

Exxaro developed New Mine 1 after production at the original Mine 1 ceased in 2016 because of deteriorating safety pillars near the shaft infrastructure.

The new operation has been established to safely access the remaining reserves while providing a long-term pathway for extending the mine’s operational life.

As a cost-plus operation, Eskom is contractually responsible for funding the mine’s costs to achieve the lowest possible overall fuel cost.

According to Exxaro, New Mine 1 is expected to produce approximately 4.2 million tonnes of coal annually and will play a critical role in supporting the reliable operation of Matla Power Station.

The Matla Coal Mine employs 6,174 people, including contractors.

Infrastructure upgrades support production

The project has delivered several major infrastructure and operational improvements, including:

• Construction of a box cut to access the Mine 1 working area
• Installation of a tunnel development silo feed conveyor system
• Development of an overland conveyor integrated with a new crushing and handling plant connected to Eskom’s conveyor network
• Construction of a new support complex comprising employee change house facilities, engineering workshops, material warehouses and administration buildings
• Implementation of a shortwall replacement project featuring new-generation mining equipment

Leadership highlights long-term strategy

Industry leaders attend mine opening

South Africa’s Minister of Minerals and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe, attended the opening ceremony and visited workers underground.

“This is a journey back home for me. I spent six years at this mine, working here and organising here, and during that same period we achieved production records. I was here as a worker, and today I return as a Minister.

People have often said that coal is a dying industry because of concerns around pollution. However, the industry continues to evolve, particularly through improvements in mining safety and ongoing investment in innovation and research. Coal miners should never be ashamed of the work they do.”

Dan Marokane, Group Chief Executive of Eskom, said the project demonstrated the value of collaboration between the two organisations.

We also negotiated the new contract structure as part of Eskom’s Cost Optimisation and Revenue Enhancement (CORE) programme, which aims to drive efficiencies in primary energy procurement. Community investment and economic impact

Exxaro said the Matla Life of Mine Project has also delivered socioeconomic benefits in Mpumalanga.

Since the project began, it has:

• Created approximately 1,132 local employment opportunities.
• Invested R532 million in black-owned businesses.
• Supported local Small Medium Micro Enterprises and prioritised skills development initiatives.

The company said these initiatives form part of its strategy to promote inclusive growth and strengthen host communities while reinforcing Matla Mine’s role in South Africa’s energy sector.

Pilot plant designed for integrated antimony processing

The fully funded pilot plant has been designed to support front-end processing at the Whiskey Bravo site and beneficiation and refining operations at Port MacKenzie. According to Nova Minerals, construction is expected to begin this quarter, with procurement of major process plant equipment already underway and key components either delivered or in transit.

The engineering and design package covers the Whiskey Bravo front-end processing site, the Port MacKenzie beneficiation plant, refinery and supporting infrastructure.

The pilot plant has been engineered to produce military-grade antimony trisulfide that meets U.S. Department of War quality specifications using what the company describes as a proprietary cleaner hydrometallurgical processing method.

Nova Minerals said the modular facility has been designed as the first stage in establishing a fully integrated domestic antimony supply chain in the United States. The design also allows for future expansion through the addition of refining circuits capable of producing antimony trioxide and antimony metal.

The company said the facility is intended to serve as a scalable processing hub for feedstock from the Estelle Project, as well as regional and global projects.

Construction preparations underway

With engineering and design complete, the project has entered the execution phase.

Major equipment procurement is progressing, with more than 40 containers currently en route to Port MacKenzie for delivery in the coming weeks.

Nova Minerals also secured key equipment from a recently decommissioned modern beneficiation circuit at a North American processing facility. According to the company, the equipment has a limited operating history and is well suited to the proposed pilot plant flowsheet.

The acquisition is expected to reduce procurement lead times, improve capital efficiency and accelerate the project’s transition from engineering into construction and operational readiness.

Processing flow established

The integrated pilot plant has been designed to process stibnite-bearing material and produce an antimony trisulfide product suitable for sale or further downstream processing.

Operations will be split across two locations.

At the Whiskey Bravo site, front-end processing will include crushing, screening, ore sorting, concentrate storage and load-out.

Bulk sample material collected from the Stibium and Styx areas within the Estelle Project claims will first be transported to Whiskey Bravo for crushing and initial sorting before selected material is moved by air or snow road to Port MacKenzie.

At the Port MacKenzie processing facility, the ore will undergo crushing, screening, ore sorting, beneficiation, refining, product recovery and associated utility and reagent processes before being refined using the company’s proprietary cleaner hydrometallurgical process.

The final antimony trisulfide product will then be filtered, dried and bagged for shipment.

Execution phase begins

Christopher Gerteisen, Chief Executive Officer of Nova Minerals Corp., said the completion of engineering and design represented another significant milestone for the project.

“We continue to make rapid progress on the antimony project and remain ahead of schedule, with another major milestone now completed.

As it navigates ongoing activity, North America’s gold mining industry is responding to shifting economic conditions, emerging technologies, and growing expectations around environmental responsibility.  

Across key regions such as Ontario (ON), Canada, long-established mining districts operate by way of modern exploration techniques and increasingly efficient extraction methods. 

Amid ongoing global uncertainty, gold remains a significant commodity in the sector.

As North America’s gold sector operates within a changing environment, it continues to adapt. 

SIGNIFICANT OPERATION 

Hemlo Mining Corp. (Hemlo) is a Canadian mining producer built on one of the country’s most iconic gold camps. 

Formerly known as Carcetti Capital Corp., Hemlo was recently established in 2025 to operate the Hemlo Gold Mine in Northwest OT, acquiring the site from Barrick Mining Corporation (Barrick).  

The acquisition was a highly competitive process, however Hemlo’s strong technical team and institutional backing enabled it to secure the acquisition. 

Hemlo had exceptionally strong support to finance what was ultimately a USD$1 billion transaction and was fortunate for the outcome to fall in its favor. 

The deal was underpinned by Hemlo’s long-term view and expertise in the gold market, particularly given the opportunity created by the divergence between spot prices and long-term forecasts. 

A piece of Canadian mining history, the Hemlo Gold Mine has been in production for over 40 years, having produced over 25 million ounces (oz) of gold during its lifetime.  

Today, two key pieces of infrastructure are operating well below capacity, creating a significant opportunity for the company. The mill is running at about 40 percent capacity and the hoist at around 60 percent. 

In terms of its production profile, Hemlo hasn’t released formal guidance yet – however, the company did publish its NI 43-101 Technical Report late last year, which provides some insight regarding potential future production and growth profiles.  

CONSIDERABLE FLEXIBILITY 

The company believes the Hemlo Gold Mine offers significant expansion potential, with cut-off grade adjustments to optimize extraction.  

In many deposits, adjusting the cut-off grade results in margin compression, whereas Hemlo is in a position where that impact is far less pronounced, creating a potential opportunity for increased tonnage and the potential to reduce unit costs through economies of scale. 

While some operators have shifted their focus away from Canada in recent years, the company remains confident in its prospects. Indeed, the country is still a top-tier mining jurisdiction, and Hemlo is proud to be part of it. 

However, one of the industry’s most pressing challenges is a widespread shortage of skilled professionals. 

A lack of people and talent is significantly impacting the sector, with significant attrition across the board – from miners and geologists to engineers and finance professionals, even within government.  

This talent gap also affects regulatory processes, particularly at the provincial level, where reduced capacity makes it difficult to accelerate permitting timelines. 

At the same time, there is a broader structural imbalance within the global mining value chain when it comes to outsourcing minerals refinement and processing.  

Much of the refining capacity still sits in Eastern markets, which is not something that can be fixed overnight.  

OWNER-OPERATOR MODEL 

Hemlo recently transitioned to owner-operator of the mine, overseeing a workforce of approximately 700.  

The company primarily tries to hire within local communities, collaborating with First Nations partners in the towns of White River, Manitouwadge, and Marathon.  

Its transition to an owner-operator model was a move designed to strengthen both its operational control and community engagement. 

Historically, many workers moved away from the region due to the prevalence of contractor-based roles – Hemlo is seeking to reverse that trend.  

People want stability – pensions, benefits, and the ability to go home to their families every night, rather than staying in camps. 

Re-establishing these kinds of connections is fundamental to enabling a healthy work-life balance for the company’s employees. For Hemlo, it’s all about being a strong member of the community. 

The mine’s historic legacy is a defining element of Hemlo’s identity.

LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY 

Alongside exploration, the company is investing in its workforce, mining fleet, and processing infrastructure. 

In this sense, the Hemlo Gold Mine is not just a standalone asset, but a platform for broader growth. 

A cornerstone of Hemlo’s growth strategy is its extensive 130,000-meter (m) exploration drilling program for 2026 – one of the largest of its kind in Canada. 

The program is divided into three key components, each designed to support both short-term performance and long-term expansion.  

These components include resource conversion drilling to a depth of 70,000 m, a 30,000 m high-definition drilling stage focused on derisking the short-term mine plan, and a 30,000 m growth drilling stage to test new mineralized zones outside the current mineral resource footprint.  

The 2026 resource conversion drilling program targets inferred mineral resources and unclassified material to upgrade it to the indicated mineral resource category and extend current mine life. 

The high-definition drilling program refers to the tighter drill spacing routinely applied at the Hemlo Gold Mine prior to mining, while the growth drilling program is designed to test expanded mineralized footprints identified through sporadic historical drilling and localized past mining areas. 

UNLOCKING VALUABLE GROWTH 

A revised geological understanding of the deposit is key. For many years, the deposit was mischaracterized – It’s actually a Precambrian porphyry or intrusion-related system, which has important implications for how mineralization is distributed. 

As the system formed, mineralized fluids moved upward, precipitating at multiple contact points. 

What makes the deposit particularly unique is the fact it has undergone two deformation events, effectively folding the mineralization over itself. The mineralization existed before this deformation. 

Historically, mining operations focused on the main contact zones, which were economically viable at much lower gold prices. However, today’s pricing environment opens up additional opportunities. 

There are zones in both the hanging wall and footwall that are located near existing infrastructure. 

NEW MINERALISED STRUCTURES 

In May this year, Hemlo announced results from its 130,000 m 2026 drilling program regarding the South-Rim Zone (South-Rim) which support the definition of a newly recognized, high-grade mineralization domain. 

Identified as one of four priority growth targets in Hemlo’s January 2026 announcement, South-Rim forms part of the company’s growth component.  

Initially intersected during previous drilling campaigns, the company’s ongoing reinterpretation of South-Rim suggests multiple mineralized horizons within the metasediments may remain.  

Multiple discrete, sub-parallel lenses of 1 to 2 m in width have exhibited moderate-to-strong silicification and carbonate alteration, hosting high-grade ore shoots that display plunge orientations identical to those of the C-Zone or E-Zone ore bodies.  

The newly defined structure demonstrates how high-grade shoots within South-Rim are not isolated anomalies, but rather a coherent system of plunge-controlled lenses. 

Hemlo’s geology team recently completed a comprehensive reinterpretation of all available drill data, recognizing for the first time that these discrete intersections are part of a single, plunge-controlled mineralized structure extending over more than 1.5 kilometers vertically and within an approximately 300-m-wide east-west corridor. 

While individual lenses in the C-Zone remain spatially separated, they share consistent grade characteristics and structural affinity, confirming their common genetic origin. 

The ongoing growth drilling campaign is designed to validate this new interpretation, infill data gaps within the upper portion of the South-Rim structure and test the lateral and down-plunge extents of the system. 

With intercepts at South-Rim now announced, Hemlo’s exploration strategy turns eastward toward several other zones, where historical mining intersections within equivalent South-Rim horizons returned results that remain largely untested by drilling. 

LONG-STANDING COLLABORATIONS 

Beyond geology and operations, Hemlo places strong emphasis on its relationships with local suppliers and surrounding communities. 

Long-standing collaborations, such as with Manroc Developments – who has supported operations in the region for nearly three decades – remain central to the company’s approach. 

It’s important to maintain those relationships as they play a key role in Hemlo’s development activities. 

At the same time, Hemlo works with First Nations partners to support economic development and establish long-term, sustainable business opportunities. 

This commitment extends to the nearby town of Marathon, where the company engages a range of local suppliers for operational and safety services.

Caterpillar has expanded its mining technology capabilities through the acquisition of Skycatch, a provider of spatial data capture, processing and analysis solutions for the mining industry.

The acquisition builds on Caterpillar’s recent acquisition of RPMGlobal (RPM) and is designed to enhance the company’s data-driven mining technology solutions, helping customers optimise material movement and improve mine site performance.

Mining Technology and Data Integration

Skycatch’s technology captures high-frequency, high-precision, large-scale spatial data and combines it with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to analyse and interact with operational information.

Integrating Skycatch’s technology with its RPM and MineStar solutions is intended to provide mining customers with improved visibility of site conditions and support faster, more accurate decision-making across staffed and autonomous fleets.

What is the Canada Critical Minerals Accelerator?

The Government of Canada has launched the Canada Critical Minerals Accelerator (CCMA) and announced its first Strategic Investment Agreement, supporting the proposed expansion of Teck Resources Limited’s Trail Operations in Trail.

The agreement, signed by the CCMA, the Canada Growth Fund (CGF) and Teck, is intended to accelerate investment in critical minerals processing while supporting Canada’s strategy to strengthen domestic supply chains and increase production capacity.

Investment to Expand Critical Minerals Processing

The expansion forms part of Teck’s potential investment of up to USD$850 million equivalent in Trail Operations to sustain and enhance critical minerals processing capacity from a portfolio of feed sources.

According to the announcement, the project could double the facility’s existing production capacity for germanium and antimony while potentially adding new gallium production capacity.

Trail Operations currently produces 19 products, employs more than 1,400 people and is one of the world’s largest fully integrated polymetallic smelting and refining complexes.

New Investment Model for Critical Minerals

Introduced in Budget 2025, the CCMA is a Natural Resources Canada initiative delivered by Export Development Canada. It is designed to accelerate Canadian critical minerals projects across the value chain, from extraction through to processing.

Under the agreement, the Canada Growth Fund will establish the commercial framework for an equity-like investment of up to USD$400 million directly into the Trail facility.

The agreement also enables the Government of Canada, through the CCMA, to negotiate an offtake structure that could include rights to a portion of future germanium, antimony and gallium production.

Supporting Domestic Supply Chains

The federal government said the initiative is intended to strengthen Canada’s position as a reliable supplier of critical minerals while improving supply chain resilience for strategic industries.

The project has also been identified as a priority under Government of British Columbia’s Look West strategy and may benefit from streamlined regulatory processes and potential support through the British Columbia Strategic Investment Fund.

First Project Under New Accelerator

The Strategic Investment Agreement represents the first project announced under the Canada Critical Minerals Accelerator.

The government said the programme is designed to invest alongside industry using investment structures that generate returns, with proceeds intended to be reinvested into future critical minerals projects while supporting Canada’s domestic supply chain, economic priorities and long-term critical minerals strategy.

Rebuild American Domestic Critical Minerals Processing

EVelution Energy has commenced construction of the 28 MW solar facility that will supply renewable power to its planned cobalt processing operation in Yuma County, Arizona, advancing the company’s USD$450 million critical minerals project.

The start of construction marks the latest phase in the company’s development programme, following progress in permitting, commercial agreements and project development. Once complete, the facility is intended to support domestic cobalt processing capacity while strengthening U.S. critical minerals supply chains.

Solar Construction Begins

Construction has started with the installation of the first permanent steel mounting piles across the 150-acre solar site. Installed in their final design locations, the piles will support the solar panels that are expected to provide power for the cobalt processing facility once operational.

The work is being carried out under a binding construction contract using engineering drawings prepared and approved by Aquila Energy, the project’s Solar EPC contractor, with engineering and project integration support provided by M3 Engineering & Technology Corporation.

Construction of the solar array is expected to continue throughout 2026 and into 2027, with pile installation, racking, electrical and civil works progressing ahead of commissioning of the cobalt processing plant. Commercial operations are expected by the end of 2029.

Supporting Domestic Critical Minerals Processing

The solar installation forms a central part of EVelution Energy’s strategy to establish a resilient domestic critical minerals processing platform supported by renewable energy and U.S.-based manufacturing.

The project is being designed to maximise the use of American-made steel, domestically manufactured equipment and U.S. engineering services. EVelution Energy has also committed to using 100 per cent American-made steel across the solar installation, battery storage systems and cobalt processing facility structures.

“Today’s groundbreaking marks another important milestone in our effort to rebuild America’s domestic critical minerals processing capability, and we’re proud to be taking that next step here in Yuma County. The piles going into the ground mark the beginning of the renewable energy system that will power the first cobalt metal and cobalt sulfate processing facility in the United States.

We’re equally proud that we’re building this project around 100% American-made structural steel, American engineering and American manufacturing,” said Navaid Alam, President & Chief Executive Officer of EVelution Energy.

Processing Capacity

When fully operational, the Yuma County facility is expected to become the first commercial-scale cobalt metal and cobalt sulfate processing facility in the United States.

The plant is designed to process approximately 24,000 metric tons of cobalt hydroxide feedstock annually and produce up to 20,000 metric tons of electric vehicle battery-grade cobalt sulfate containing approximately 4,000 metric tons of cobalt, alongside up to 3,000 metric tons of alloy-grade cobalt metal each year.

This production capacity is expected to supply up to approximately 40 per cent of projected U.S. cobalt demand, supporting the aerospace, defence, electric vehicle battery and advanced manufacturing sectors.

Renewable Energy Integration

The 28 MW solar facility is being constructed on the company’s property in Yuma County, Arizona. Once completed, it is expected to generate sufficient electricity to power the cobalt processing plant entirely through solar energy.

Any surplus electricity generated will either be stored using on-site battery systems or supplied to the local electricity grid.

The company believes combining domestic cobalt processing with on-site solar generation, battery storage and future recycling capability forms part of its long-term strategy to strengthen domestic critical minerals supply chains.

Regional Economic Impact

EVelution Energy’s USD$450 million project is expected to generate approximately USD$1.2 billion in annual economic activity across Arizona while creating more than 6,200 direct, indirect and induced jobs over the life of the project.

Located near Tacna, Arizona, within a rural Qualified Opportunity Zone, the development is intended to support long-term industrial investment, skilled employment and supply chain activity in the region.

The company also noted that the census tract containing the project site is currently being considered for re-designation by Governor Hobbs under the next generation of the federal Opportunity Zone programme, aligning the project with longer-term rural economic development priorities.

Lhoist and Martin Marietta Materials have announced a definitive agreement to combine Lhoist North America with Martin Marietta in a move designed to strengthen their position across North America’s aggregates, lime, and building materials sectors.

The transaction will bring together complementary mining and processing assets, while enabling both organizations to expand customer capabilities, improve operational scale, and support long-term value creation.

Under the agreement, Financière de Gestions Internationales (FGI), the Berghmans family holding company, will become Martin Marietta’s largest single shareholder and will receive representation on the company’s Board of Directors.

The ownership position reflects FGI’s confidence in the combined company’s long-term growth strategy and its commitment to supporting sustainable value creation.

The transaction will also leave Lhoist’s operations in Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific (APAC), and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) fully owned by FGI.

Acquisition expands global mining and refining portfolio

Alcoa has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire South32’s interests in a portfolio of bauxite mines, alumina refineries and aluminium smelters in a cash and stock transaction with an upfront value of approximately $4.1 billion.

The transaction represents an implied enterprise value of approximately $4.7 billion, including net debt primarily related to normal course financing leases. Alcoa has also agreed to provide South32 with a contingent value right (CVR) of up to $750 million.

The acquisition will expand its global mine-to-metal platform, strengthen its portfolio of upstream assets and increase its ability to serve customers as demand for critical minerals and metals continues to grow.

Focus on long-term growth and supply security

The acquisition supports its long-term growth strategy by adding a diversified portfolio of mining, refining and smelting assets while improving supply chain resilience across key regions.

Alcoa expects the transaction to generate approximately $900 million in net present value through operational optimization, greater integration and the application of best practices across the combined portfolio.

Under the agreement, Alcoa will acquire South32’s interests in the Boddington bauxite mine and Worsley alumina refinery in Western Australia, the Hillside aluminium smelter and idled Bayside smelter property in South Africa, and the Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN) bauxite mine and the Alumar alumina refinery and aluminium smelter in Brazil.

The transaction excludes South32’s Mozal aluminium smelter in Mozambique.

Upon completion, Alcoa said it expects to become a leading global alumina and aluminium producer with pro forma calendar year 2025 production of 3.2 Mmt of aluminium and 14.8 Mmt of alumina.

Financial benefits and operational synergies

Alcoa said the acquisition is expected to be immediately accretive to earnings per share and free cash flow following completion.

The company also expects the larger integrated portfolio to improve cost competitiveness, strengthen security of supply and create new growth opportunities, including an expanded presence in Australia and Brazil and a new operating presence in South Africa.

South32 may also receive up to $750 million through the contingent value right, subject to agreed alumina and aluminium price thresholds over four successive annual periods beginning on July 1st, 2026.

The transaction is expected to close during the first half of 2027, subject to South32 shareholder approval, regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. The transaction has been unanimously approved by the Board of Directors of both companies.

Industry collaboration advances mine electrification

BHP, Rio Tinto and Caterpillar have launched an industry-first trial of two Cat® 793 XE Early Learner battery-electric haul trucks at BHP’s Jimblebar iron ore mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara.

Following three months of on-site testing, the trial is generating data to assess the technical readiness, infrastructure requirements and commercial feasibility of battery-electric haul trucks in one of the world’s most demanding mining environments.

Jimblebar is currently home to two of the seven Caterpillar Early Learner battery-electric haul trucks being tested globally.

Real-world testing in demanding conditions

Following extensive safety validation and controlled testing at Caterpillar’s Tucson Proving Ground in the US, the trucks arrived at Jimblebar late last year and are now operating in the Pilbara.

The trial includes testing high-powered static and dynamic charging solutions, with more than 100 hours of operation and over 200 test laps completed during the initial phase. The data collected is helping validate key assumptions around safety, technology and maintenance.

The next phase will assess dynamic charging using an energy transfer system designed to charge the trucks while they are in motion, with the aim of improving operational efficiency.

Supporting mining decarbonisation

Western Australia Premier Roger Cook, Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson, and Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael attended the demonstration alongside representatives from BHP, Rio Tinto, Caterpillar and WesTrac.

Sweden Approves Key Permit for Norra Kärr Rare Earths Project

Leading Edge Materials has secured a 25-year exploitation concession for its Norra Kärr Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREE) project in southern Sweden, marking a major regulatory milestone for one of Europe’s most strategically important critical minerals projects.

The mining lease, granted by the Swedish Government following a recommendation from the Mining Inspectorate, allows the company to advance what it says could become the European Union’s first operating heavy rare earths mine.

Norra Kärr is recognised as one of Europe’s richest rare earth deposits, with significant concentrations of dysprosium, terbium and yttrium—materials that are essential for permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, offshore wind turbines, defence technologies and advanced electronics.

Project Supports Europe’s Critical Minerals Strategy

The approval comes as Europe seeks to reduce its dependence on imported rare earths, particularly from China, which dominates global production and processing.

Leading Edge Materials said the Swedish Government recognised the project’s strategic importance for both Sweden and the EU, concluding that securing domestic supplies of critical raw materials outweighed competing land-use interests.

Chief Executive Officer Kurt Budge described the decision as a “transformational moment” for both the company and European supply chain security.

“The Government’s decision affirms that this is a strategically important heavy rare earth deposit, located in a Tier 1 jurisdiction, with the capacity to supply all of Europe’s annual dysprosium requirements alongside meaningful terbium and yttrium production,” Budge said.

He added that the company will now focus on environmental permitting, updating its pre-feasibility study and securing offtake agreements with industrial partners.

Environmental Permitting and Community Engagement Next

While the concession establishes the right to mine, the project must still complete Sweden’s environmental permitting process before construction can begin.

Leading Edge Materials said it will continue engaging with regulators, local communities and other stakeholders throughout the next phase of development.

Budge acknowledged local concerns around the project, saying environmental protection and water stewardship would remain central to its development strategy.

“The studies now underway will examine how mining can be developed in harmony with the local environment, and we will share our findings openly at every stage. Water protection and environmental stewardship are central to how we will build this project.”

Next Steps Include Updated Feasibility Study and Offtake Discussions

The company will now begin an updated pre-feasibility study alongside environmental permitting while engaging potential customers and financiers.

Leading Edge Materials also plans to consider reapplying for Strategic Project status under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, which could accelerate permitting and improve access to European funding.

If developed, Norra Kärr would become a significant source of heavy rare earth elements for European manufacturers, supporting regional efforts to build more resilient and diversified critical minerals supply chains amid growing demand from the energy transition and advanced manufacturing sectors.

Hudbay Minerals has celebrated the groundbreaking of the New Ingerbelle expansion project at its Copper Mountain mine in British Columbia, marking a significant step forward in the company’s long-term copper growth strategy.

The expansion is expected to extend the life of the Copper Mountain operation well into the 2040s, while enhancing its copper and gold production profile and securing more than 800 full-time jobs. The project recently received key provincial permits and has been recognised by the Government of British Columbia as a priority resource development project.

“New Ingerbelle is not just an expansion, it is a critical pillar of Hudbay’s long-term growth strategy in British Columbia,” said Peter Kukielski, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hudbay. “The opening of New Ingerbelle enhances the copper and gold production profile at Copper Mountain, secures more than 800 full-time jobs beyond 2040 and ensures the mine continues to deliver economic benefits at the local, regional and federal levels.”

Supporting Canada’s Critical Minerals Growth

The project is expected to play an important role in strengthening Canada’s supply of copper, a critical mineral essential for electrification, renewable energy infrastructure and modern industrial technologies.

Based on current mineral reserves, New Ingerbelle is projected to produce approximately 750,000 tonnes of copper, alongside 900,000 ounces of gold and 5.5 million ounces of silver over its life. The deposit also offers operational advantages, including access to higher-grade mineralisation and a significantly lower stripping ratio than current mining areas.

Federal and provincial leaders highlighted the project’s importance to Canada’s resource sector and economic development ambitions.

“Hudbay’s groundbreaking is more than a start of a new mine expansion. It’s a signal of confidence in Canada’s resource sector, in Canadian workers, and in our ability to build big things,” said Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson.

Infrastructure Development and Community Partnerships

With major permits now in place, Hudbay has begun advancing key infrastructure required to support the expansion, including a new access road, a bridge across the Similkameen River and an east haul road connecting New Ingerbelle to existing operations.

The company also recently renewed participation agreements with both the Upper Similkameen Indian Band and Lower Similkameen Indian Band following extensive consultation during the permitting process.

Chief Charles Allison of the Upper Similkameen Indian Band emphasised the importance of balancing development with environmental stewardship.

Long-Term Economic Impact

Hudbay estimates the New Ingerbelle expansion will generate more than C$11.5 billion in provincial GDP while supporting regional contractors, suppliers and local businesses throughout the mine’s operating life. American Ocean Minerals Corporation (AOMC) has successfully completed Expedition 7, a three-week offshore research campaign designed to strengthen the environmental baseline data required to support future deep-sea mineral development in the Cook Islands.

Conducted aboard the company’s dedicated research vessel, MV Anuanua Moana, the expedition completed 53 sampling sites and collected more than 4,000 physical samples. The campaign is believed to be one of the most productive benthic environmental baseline studies undertaken within the deep-sea mining sector to date.

Building the Scientific Foundation for Deep-Sea Resource Development

The programme forms part of the environmental and technical workstreams supporting the advancement of polymetallic nodule resources within Moana Minerals’ EL3 exploration licence area.

Sampling activities included sediment chemistry, macrofauna, meiofauna, foraminifera and environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, providing critical information on ecosystem conditions and natural variability across the project area. Additional datasets covering bathymetry, water-column biomass and marine observations were also collected.

The results are expected to support ongoing environmental impact assessment work and future engagement with Cook Islands regulators as the project progresses toward key development milestones.

Dedicated Research Vessel Strengthens Project Execution

According to AOMC Chairman Tom Albanese, the campaign highlights the strategic value of maintaining a dedicated research platform capable of supporting environmental science and resource definition activities simultaneously.

The MV Anuanua Moana enables recurring data collection without the scheduling constraints typically associated with chartered vessels, while supporting multiple offshore work programmes from a single platform.

“Responsible development requires environmental science and resource assessment to advance in parallel,” Albanese said. “The successful completion of this campaign reinforces the strategic value of the Anuanua Moana and our ability to collect consistent, high-quality data while advancing the regulatory work required to evaluate these resources responsibly.”

As deep-sea mineral projects move from exploration toward potential development, comprehensive environmental baseline studies are becoming an increasingly important component of project planning and regulatory approval processes.

At a time when many mining companies face declining ore grades and limited pipelines of new discoveries, assets with long production horizons are becoming increasingly valuable.

The Navachab Gold Mine is the country’s oldest gold mine and a key contributor to its economy since the late 1980s. “There’s a lot of exploration happening with various minerals, such as gold, copper, lithium, graphite, and rare earths. Namibia is well-positioned to benefit from this current interest and boom in the natural resources sector,” insights Botshiwe.

Navachab is taking advantage of this growth and continuing to differentiate itself as a mining stalwart within the industry. Its pillars of success revolve around safety, putting people first, and contributing to society for the betterment of the future.

“Our niche is that we are very innovative. We are not scared to try new, innovative things that will increase efficiency, lower operating costs, and improve employee safety, production, and profitability,” he furthers.

Regarding Navachab’s contribution to the community and country at large, it works closely with local leaders and authorities to partner on projects, such as the construction of a medical centre in Karibib.

“One of the biggest understated contributions we make is building local service enterprises in the mining industry – many from scratch. For example, we helped initiate and develop a drilling contractor who has now expanded across the country, providing exploration, grid control, and blast hole drilling services. We ultimately want to develop a Namibian mining services ecosystem by supporting local service providers and SMEs within the sector,” Botshiwe explains.

COMMITTED TO SUCCESS

Of crucial importance for Navachab and its continued success is the company’s dedication towards investing in innovative processing technologies.

“We are not afraid to try new technologies in gold processing,” affirms Botshiwe.

“10 years ago, we became the first mine to implement dense medium separation (DMS) technology in commercial scale gold processing, where we concentrate low-grade mineral ore material into a high-grade concentrate then treat it through our processing plant. Additionally, we added X-ray transmissive sorting to complement the DMS technology, which has proved very successful.”

Equally, two years ago, Navachab implemented high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) and a Swiss Tower Mill to grind and mill gold-bearing ore, nearly doubling the mine’s milling capacity. This advanced technology operates at a lower cost than conventional methods and requires less power and water, reflecting the mine’s commitment to sustainability.

Navachab is currently working to expand and is actively exploring various technologies to further increase its processing capacity, alongside progressing its underground project, where it is developing two portals to explore a further 2 to 2.5 million ounces (oz) of gold.

“This is the most important and exciting project we are working on. We have already completed over 800 metres (m) in decline development, and we are planning to start exploration drilling by the end of the year and finish the feasibility study in Q3 2027,” Botshiwe details.

To complement this project, Navachab is constructing a gravity concentrator scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2026, which will improve recoveries by approximately five to six percent. This is in parallel to a feasibility study the company is conducting for a future plant expansion that will allow the updated facility to treat discoveries from surface and underground mining.

“We are well-aligned and excited to further grow the mine based on all of the projects we are engaging in,” confirms Botshiwe.

CREATING VALUE FOR THE COMMUNITY

Navachab has diligently worked to cement itself as a modern, long-life gold mining operation that adds value to both its shareholders and the local communities. One of the company’s biggest advantages is its mineral resources, which comprise nearly 5 million oz within the ground.

“Our current mine plan produces approximately 2.5 million oz, meaning we have an excess of 2.5 million oz to develop a feasible plan for. Hence, we have started feasibility studies for underground mining to expand both our operations and the life of mine,” Botshiwe outlines.

Navachab has a history of converting its exploration targets into resources and eventually mineable and profitable pits, both above and underground. The company is confident it will soon be able to convert its findings and new resources into sustainable long-term mining.

“What enables us to expand our operations is that we are a low-cost producer. With the gold prices where they are today, many are tempted to include expensive projects that increase all-in sustaining costs; however, our target for Navachab’s all-in sustaining costs is around USD$1,000 per oz,” details Botshiwe.

As the mine continues to reach for further success, it is prioritising the development and welfare of its people and the safe running of its mining processes, whilst also looking to increase visibility and engage with different platforms that highlight the mine’s contributions.

“It is very important for us to empower our employees in terms of training and preparing the next mining leaders in Namibia, especially in underground mining and some technical skills we are currently lacking in the country. We have recruited a number of young engineers, geologists, and technicians for this purpose and want to assist them in growing to the next level and taking on the mining responsibilities of the future,” proudly concludes Botshiwe.
