We all work hard to earn a living but do you really know where your money is actually going? You may be throwing away your hard-earned paycheck each month without even realizing it! By just cutting out some little things from your budget each week, it could save you thousands of dollars per year. Check out these areas to cut spending or areas to adjust your lifestyle to stay on budget and save more money (and sanity too)!

10 Spending Habits To Cut Out Of Your Budget To Save More Money

Dining Out

For a family of 5 the average dinner out costs us around $50. (sadly not many kids meals are being eaten anymore). When you add that up a few times a week it could be a huge budget buster. With a little advance planning you could save so much money each month and put that money into your emergency fund or that vacation you are saving up for.

It is ok to eat out once in a while, just plan for it in the budget and of course seek ways to save on the bill.  Check out my tips for ways to save at restaurants.

Meal Plan

Even if it is just a week at a time to plan your meals, it can save you money and time too! Meal planning means, no more figuring out what is for dinner last minute. Make your grocery store run only once a week to avoid those extra costs as well. On that last minute run for just milk or eggs you are bound to purchase other things that are not budgeted for. Make a list and stick to it. And if a full-out meal plan seems daunting- try “batch cooking” to start, something like my cooking ground beef in the crock-pot.  < Life changing hack here! Having the meat cooked or veggies pre-chopped helps get dinner on the table faster.

Utilities

Take a look at your cable and internet provider. Are you getting the best deal? Most companies run specials every 6 months or so. See if you qualify for those savings- and don’t be afraid to switch back and forth between providers to get the best price. Sometimes it is best to cut the cable all together. With services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video you may not need those pricey cable services at all!

Downsize Your Car

Do you need that big SUV? If not downsize to a more cost effective car that will get you better gas mileage. Also consider more carpooling opportunities to cut down on the cost of running around town to kids activities. Whatever you drive, seeing gas prices on the rise? Check out these tips for saving at the pump.

Stop Looking at Sales

Go to your inbox, how many emails do you get that are just sales for stores? Unsubscribe! Just because your favorite store has jeans half off and it will “save you money” does not mean you actually need them. These little impulse buys add up fast each month. Hubs often says, “Are you spending money to save it?”  That’s a good reality check. Plus…

Buy Second Hand

Not everything needs to be brand new. Buying secondhand has never been easier with apps such as Facebook marketplace or letgo and online sites like ThredUp. Especially for kids clothing or toys, you could save up to 90% off retail. I love using Facebook groups to not only buy, but also sell second hand.  Check out my tips for Facebook Garage Sale Groups.

Quit Bad Habits

Smoking and drinking can add up fast. If you can not quit the habit at least cut back some. Not only is it better for your wallet but it is also better for your health.

Cancel Memberships

If you have a gym membership but are only going a few times a month, I suggest canceling it. See if you can use a friend’s guest pass instead if you would still like to go. Even offer to split the cost to use it could save you half each month. Also look at community recreation centers that might offer month to month options.  That way you can pay as you go and maybe take advantage of being outside during nice weather.

Goodbye Costco and Sam’s. I know this will offend some, but paying for warehouse memberships might be costing you more than just the membership fees.  Often, you can “buy in bulk” much cheaper by stocking up on sale items at regular grocery stores.  See my tips for realistic stockpiling and how it can save your family so much on your grocery budget.

Bottled Water – Coffee Shops

Sure it is easy to grab a water bottle from your fridge or pick one up while you are out but each bottle adds up. Instead, invest in a nice reusable water bottle and fill it each day.

The same goes for your morning cup of joe.  Instead of stopping at that over priced coffee shop on your way to work, make a pot at home and take it with you.  Once again you will save time and money! And if you really need a Starbucks fix, turn your Ibotta savings into Starbucks gift cards.

Beauty Expenses

The average cut, color and blow dry can add up into the hundreds. Instead of paying those high prices check out the beauty schools in your area. They are always looking for clients to help their students at a fraction of what you would pay at the salon. If you have kids or a husband with a buzz cut, see if you can cut their hair at home. I have been cutting hubs hair (and now one son too) for years.  I save hundreds of dollars a year and again it’s a huge time saver too! Check out how easy it is to do a buzz cut!

Bonus Tip – Leave the credit cards at home and start paying with cash only! You may have heard this called the envelope system- placing budgeted cash into specific envelopes for each month.  Statistic show that consumers tend to spend less when they are using cash – be cause they can “feel” it more. We “cut up the credit cards” more than 10 years ago after taking our first Financial Peace University class and have never looked back!

Ohio Tax Free Weekend for Back to School Shopping

As I mentioned in my Back to School Tax Free Shopping Days post- in 2015 Ohio jumped on board with offering a Tax Free Shopping Weekend for Back to School supplies and clothing.  In Ohio these dates for 2021 are set for Aug 5-7.  Here are a few tips to get the most out of this weekend.

Know the Ohio Tax Free Details

First you need to know the specifics for the Ohio weekend. You can find the “official” Ohio Sales Tax Holiday info here.  The “holiday” will run from Friday, August 5, 2022at 12:00 a.m. and ends on Sunday, August 7, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. The following items are exempt from sales tax:

• Clothing priced at $75 per item or less;
• School supplies priced at $20 per item or less; and
• School instructional material priced at $20 per item or less.

So what does that mean?  In Ohio, they are qualifying each item’s maximum and not a total purchase max.  So for instance, if you bought 2 pairs of jeans for $20 each and 2 pairs of shoes for $50 each, all 4 items would be tax-exempt because the items are $75 or less each.

Lots of items qualify as “clothing” including diapers, swimsuits and rain gear!  But things like accessories/jewelry, sports equipment, protective gear and sewing supplies are not included.  You can see all the inclusions/exclusions here.

And the list of school supplies is pretty extensive, so you should be able to get most of the items off your list, including backpacks, lunch boxes, basic calculators and pencil sharpeners.

Remember each school supply item must be $20 or less. Also, this applies to in-store and online purchases too. Just be sure to make the purchase during the Tax Free dates (and not before, even if shipping happens during this weekend).

Stick to Your List

It could be very tempting to justify extra purchases during this weekend.  But remember, you really are only saving 5.75-8.75% (depending on the tax rate where you are shopping).  While the savings is still helpful, it does not warrant extra spending.  Make sure to take inventory of your clothes closets and school supplies lists before shopping.

Stack the Savings

And as I always love to say, you can save more when you stack up the discount opportunities.  Be sure to check out all the current Back to School Sale items that are being offered for that weekend.  And yes you can use the sale promotions and coupons.  Just remember that the price limits are determined by the actual price paid for an item  So if you have 2 pairs of shoes that are $80, but included in a Buy One Get One Free promotion, if the one pair rings up at $80 – it will not be tax exempt.

Also did you know you can shop Tax Free online too? Avoid the crowds and stack up the savings- yes! Be sure to add promo codes for more savings and make your purchase before the Sunday night deadline.

When August hits, many families start to think about shopping for back to school. Whether its for school supplies or new school clothes, budgeting for back-to-school shopping is a must. And to help with a little savings, many states offer Tax Free shopping days for back to school supplies. If you are fortunate enough to live in one of these states, be sure to take advantage in 2022! Every penny counts!

Most states offer limits on the amount you purchase.  For instance,  $75-100 in tax free clothing, $100 in tax free school supplies & $1,000 in tax free technology (computers and such). Some states offer better deals than others. Check your specific state for all the details.

Summertime is the best time for a cool ice cream treat. (Ok maybe any season is good for a sweet cone).  But if you don’t want to break the bank you might be wondering where to get cheap ice cream near me.

So if you are looking for a sweet summer treat or a way to reward your kiddo without breaking the budget, I have come up with this list of the cheapest places to buy ice cream cones. Most of these are fast food ice cream offers, but there are a couple of surprises included too.

The Best Cheap Ice Cream Offers

McDonald’s Ice Cream Cone

As I mentioned above, I have always thought McDonald’s Ice Cream cones are the perfect frugal treat at just $1.49- at least that’s the price here in Cbus.  I have heard of prices as high as $1.79 in NY, $1.29 in TX and $1.19 in FL.  So be sure to check the McD’s App to see the price of an Ice Cream Come in your area.

Chick-fil-A Ice Dream Cup

You all by now should know of my love for Chick-fil-A and one more reason to love CFA is for their desserts, especially their sweet treat- Ice Dream. I’ll admit, I have not eaten at a Burger King in… I can’t remember how long.  BUT, after I checked their app and saw the prices on the sweets- I might be swinging by very soon.  $0.79 for a vanilla soft cone/cup makes it the cheapest ice cream on the list. Well, inflation since I first wrote this post has raised the Burger King price… but not too much. Currently (July 2022) in Cbus you can get a Burger King Soft Serve Cone or Cup for $1- which still makes them the cheapest ice cream on the list! Check your app for area pricing.

Wendy’s Frosty Key Tag

Every year (usually around Christmas) I pick up the Wendy’s Frosty Key Tag. For just $2, these tags will get you a Free Jr. Frosty all year long.  These are perfect to use as name tags on gifts or as an incentive reward. You can also watch for the Wendy’s Frosty Coupon Books (usually in the Fall) to save on this classic treat.  (To dip your fries or not to dip?)

Just a reminder! These prices can vary depending on where you are located in the US.  These are the prices I could find for the Columbus area.  I would check the restaurant app or call or your store to double-check on pricing.

Not only was it the first year all 3 of my kids were back in the same school building (9th, 9th and 12th), but it was also an “almost” normal school year after the previous 2 pandemic years.  But most of all, we have a 2022 graduate! All of this was due for some celebration, so I was thrilled when Scene75 invited my family out for a day of fun and making memories.

When you hear that Scene75 is the country’s largest indoor entertainment center, you have to see it to fully grasp what that means.  With 16 attractions, including an indoor roller coaster (yes you read that right) and drop tower, bumper cars, go-karts, laser tag, glow golf, 200+ arcade games, 3 bars and a full-service restaurant- it truly lives up to the hype.

Over the years my family has had the privilege to be hosted at many amusement and entertainment centers, often these locations cater toward younger kids. Scene75 really does have options for all ages; whether it’s the indoor bounce park for littles, go-karts for teens or “old skool” arcade games for adults, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Hands down our favorite attraction were the go-karts. I loved to watch my people laughing and smiling as they raced around the track. (Lead by their dad- who sometimes is the “biggest kid” of them all).

We also loved the wide variety of game options in the arcade. We raced each other on motorcycles, battled as DC Superheros, rolled some Skee-balls, and threw it back with some air hockey. Some of those games even awarded digital tickets onto our game cards to redeem in the fully stocked reward shop.

And when you need a break in the action, there are plenty of food options too: from snacks (and must have Iccee) to a full-service restaurant (you can even request the “secret room” in Illusions restaurant) to full-service bars (for the grown-ups).

We also liked that each attraction could be purchased separately. So for my non-rollercoaster-rider hubby, he could watch us safely from the floor of the drop tower (well actually since Scene75 brilliantly has repurposed the Tuttle Mall space, he was able to watch from the second floor and get some fun photos). And for my son who has night blindness, he could skip the laser tag- but his siblings didn’t have to miss out.

Just for reference, my family of 5 had a $150 game card and we were able to do all the attractions and games we wanted (including go-karts twice!)

We would definitely make a trip back to Scene75- and maybe even bring the grandparents along too! 3 generations worth of fun!

• Columbus: Red, White and Boom is back on the Scioto Mile, parade and street fair during the day, fireworks begin at 10 pm on July 1.
• Granville: Granville’s Fourth of July celebration will run from July 1-4 . Fireworks will be held on Friday, July 1 at 10 p.m. at Wildwood Park. A Fourth of July parade will be held on July 4 .
• Obetz: Famous Fortress Fireworks from 6-10 on July 1
• Reynoldsburg: Renoldsburg’s Fourth of July celebration and fireworks will be held on July 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 10 p.m.

• Grove City: Grove City’s Fourth of July fireworks will be held at 9:50 p.m. on July 2.

• Ashville: Ashville’s Fourth of July Celebration will be held from June 30 to July 4. Its fireworks display will be at 10 p.m. on July 4.
• Bexley: Fourth of July in Bexley will begin at 8 a.m. on July 4 with the John Barr 5K. Fireworks will be set off at 10 p.m. following a day full of events.
• Chillicothe:. Fireworks at 9:45 pm
• Delaware: The City of Delaware’s Fourth of July fireworks will begin at 10 p.m. on July 4.
• Dublin: Dublin’s Fourth of July celebration will begin with a fishing derby at 8 a.m. on July 4 and will be followed by a parade at 11 a.m. in downtown Dublin. Fireworks will be set off around 9:50 p.m. following a celebration at Dublin Coffman High School.
• Lancaster: Lancaster’s Fourth of July parade and fireworks will be held on Monday, July 4.
• Marion: The Fourth of July falls during the Marion County Fair (7/4-9) and evening events will end with a fireworks show beginning at 10 p.m. on July 4 at the Marion County Fairgrounds.
• Mount Vernon: Mount Vernon’s Fourth of July fireworks will begin around 10 p.m. on July 4 at the Ariel-Foundation Park.
• New Albany: New Albany’s Fourth of July parade will be held at 11 a.m. on July 4. Fireworks will start around 10 p.m.
• Pickerington: Pickerington’s Fourth of July fireworks will be held on July 4 at 10 p.m. The July 4th celebration parade will be on July 4 at 10 a.m.
• Plain City: Plain City’s Fourth of July celebration will be held on July 4 at Pastime Park. Parade will start at 10 am. Following live music that begins at 7 p.m., fireworks will start at 9:45 p.m.
• Sunbury: Sunbury’s Fourth of July celebration will start at 8 a.m. at Sunbury Square and go through the day. Fireworks will begin at dusk at Big Walnut High School.
• Upper Arlington: Upper Arlington’s Fourth of July celebration will be held on July 4. A parade will begin at 9 a.m. and at 5 p.m., Party in the Park begins. Fireworks will start at 10 p.m.
• Westerville: Westerville’s day-long Independence Day celebration will be held on July 4. The day will be capped off with fireworks at 10 p.m. at Heritage Park.
• Worthington: Worthington Hills parade begins at 12pm, The fireworks display will begin at approximately 10:00 p.m on July 4th at Thomas Worthington High School (TWHS).
