The Cutest Witch (An Inspiring Story)

She surely was the cutest witch that I had ever seen.
She was no more than six years old, that day on Halloween.

I thought it seemed so very strange that she was all alone,
and that she'd come before nightfall and when the sun still shone.

She had a pumpkin in her hand I thought was meant for sweets.
I went to get my goody bowl filled up with chocolate treats.

'Twas then I saw her little face was saddened with a frown.
Then hesitating just a bit, she put her pumpkin down.

She looked into my eyes and said, "Hello, my name's Marie.
We just moved in across the tracks; it's just my Mom and me.

My Mama saved up for a year so she could buy my suit.
Oh, ma'am, I do love chocolates, but could you give me fruit?

You see, my Mom's been sick a lot, and we don't have much food,
'cause Daddy died six months ago, and fruit would do her good.

If you don't have some fruit, I think a can of soup will do,
and I'd be mighty thankful for a pack of crackers too."

I saw her tiny face light up, with twinkles in her eyes.
She whispered, "Mama doesn't know, because it's my surprise."

Inside a bag I placed some fruit and soup that I had handy,
then picked her little pumpkin up and stuffed it full with candy.

She thanked me very happily; her eyes displayed a spark.
She said, "Goodbye; my Mama said come home before it's dark."

I did not know my nine-year-old was standing close nearby,
because my vision was so blurred by tears that welled my eye.

But later when I heard her talk to friends by telephone,
I knew that she had formed a plan that was her very own.

That night around the neighborhood she and her friends did troop
and ask at every porch-lit home for food and fruit and soup.

With them they carried grocery sacks and pranced around with glee.
On every sack, in neon words, was printed, "For Marie."

When they were done they scampered off and marched across the tracks
with bags of candy they'd received and bulging grocery sacks.

ABC's of the First Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I have always been interested in learning about early America and the very first Thanksgiving celebration. I came across this adorable PDF teaching from Marci and wanted to share it.

A is for Americans

Some of the earliest Americans were the Pilgrims. They wanted to be free to have their own religion.

B is for Big Ship:

The Pilgrims sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in a big ship called the Mayflower.

C is for Cramped:

The ship was very cramped or crowded. There was little room for children to play. Many people became sick.

D is for Danger:

The trip was filled with danger. Often there were storms with great winds. Everyone was afraid.

E is for Explore:

After 66 days the happy Pilgrims reached land. Some of the men went to shore to explore. They wanted to see what was there.

F is for Fields:

They found forests and fields where the native people had planted corn. They found clean water to drink.

G is for Grateful:

Everyone was happy and grateful. They found a safe place to live the way they wanted.

H is for Hard:

That first winter was very cold and hard for the Pilgrims. There was not enough food. Many people got sick and died.

I is for INDIAN:

(Now we say Native American.) A friendly Indian named Squanto helped the Pilgrims. He showed them how to plant corn and where to find fish.

J is for JONES:

In the spring, Captain Jones, the captain of the Mayflower, went back to England. The Pilgrims stayed in their new home, America.

K is for KEPT:

The Pilgrims kept working hard. They planted gardens and built houses and furniture.

L is for Land:

They learned how to hunt and fish in the new land.

M is for MANY:

By summer, the Pilgrims had built many houses. Their vegetable gardens grew well.

N is for NO ONE:

By November, there was plenty to eat. No one would be hungry this winter.

O is for ONE:

One day, Governor Bradford said, “We should be thankful for our harvest.”

P is for Pilgrims:

The Pilgrims harvested pumpkins, corn, squash, beans, and carrots. They found nuts and berries in the woods.

Q is for QUAIL:

The men hunted for wild quail, turkey, geese, and deer. They caught fish in the rivers.

R is for READY:

They caught lobsters, clams, and oysters in the ocean. They got everything ready for a big celebration.

S is for SHARE:

The Pilgrims wanted to share what they had with the Indians, their new friends.

T is for THANKFUL:

The Pilgrims were thankful. Now they had food, homes, and friends.

U is for US:

The Pilgrims said to their new friends, “Please join us!”

V is for VISIT:

They invited the Indians to visit them for their special harvest celebration.

W is for When:

When everyone came, they ate together and played games.

X is for EXCITED:

The Pilgrims were EXCITED and very happy. Their celebration lasted for three days!

Y is for YELLED:

The children played and laughed and yelled.

Z is for Zany:

The children acted zany, running all around with their new friends. They had a wonderful time.

Most people don’t know that the Pilgrims did not celebrate again the next year. Later on, several Presidents, including George Washington, made one-time Thanksgiving holidays.

It became an official holiday in 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln, said to set aside the last Thursday in November to give thanks.

In 1941, Congress made Thanksgiving an annual national holiday to be celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November. Now it’s a time for family and friends to give thanks together, eat lots of good food, watch parades and football games. It’s also the start of the winter holiday season!

"To Talk Turkey" (mainly American English)

Meaning to discuss a problem in a serious way with a real intention to solve it.
Example:The politicians need to stop messing around and start talking turkey.

Some Thanksgiving Idioms:

Count your Blessings

To be grateful for what one has.
Example: When you realize many people are in worse situations than you, you should count your blessings.

Be Stuffed

To feel very full after eating a lot of food
Example: I can't possibly have dessert, I'm stuffed!

Cold Turkey

To immediately (not gradually) and completely stop doing a bad habit.
Example: When I got pregnant quit smoking cigarettes cold turkey.

Talk Turkey

To talk seriously about something.
Example: I hope everyone comes to the meeting ready to talk turkey.

A mixed blessing

Something that has its pros and cons
Example: Being short can be a mixed blessing. On the one hand, I can feel comfortable in economy class on the plane, but on the other hand, I need help to get my luggage from the shelf.

Gobble Up

To eat something very quickly.
Example: Let's get to the party before everyone gobbles up the good food

Easy as Pie

Something is very easy
Example: Don't worry, skiing is as easy as pie; You'll learn it very quickly

Eat like a Bird

To eat a very small amount of something.
Example: My girlfriend eats like a bird so I always finish her meal when we go to restaurants

Blessing in Disguise.

An apparent misfortune that turns out to have positive consequences.
Example: Getting fired from that job was a blessing in disguise. I’m much happier now in my new job.

Stuff It

To tell someone to stop talking (informal, not polite).
Example: I was shocked when my husband told my mother to stuff it!

Stuff your Face

To eat a lot.
Example: I stuffed my face during the holidays and gained 10 pounds.

Stuffed Shirt

A person who is serious and acts in a very formal way.
Example: The office party was so boring because I was seated at the table with all the stuffed shirts.

The Gravy Train

In a situation where you make a lot of money without doing a lot of work for it.
Example: He's been on the gravy train since he married a millionaire.

Stick a Fork in It!

Something is finished, complete, or no longer able to continue.
Example: This list is complete so I may as well stick a fork in it. Happy Thanksgiving

The night is dark, the streets are quiet,

St. Patrick’s Day is near.

I tap my hammer so you’ll know

the Leprechaun is here!

I’ll pull out all your laces,

put in your hair.

And when you walk around,

you’ll see my gold coins everywhere.

You’ll never catch me in your trap,

but, yes, I’ll make a scene!

I’ll turn the whole place upside down.

Your toilet will be green!

House number one. I’m going in!

Really? That’s your trap?

I’m in and out, without a doubt.

That one was a SNAP!

And now I think it’s getting worse.

A shoebox on a stick?

I’ll dance a and still escape.

We Leprechauns are quick!

Another house. I fixed your shoes!

They really were quite smelly.

I’ll eat the nuts you left as bait

and leave with a full belly.

Now you’re talking! Look at this.

It’s dandelion tea!

But I’m too speedy for your trap.

This tea is mine for free!

I know you want my pot of gold.

That iron cage was clever.

But I’ve been alive 200 years.

You won’t catch me, ever!

Now you’re getting fancy!

But I’ll escape with twinkle toes.

It’s a fancy pantsy dancy!

Ha! ha - ha - ha

It seems to me an engineer

has helped with this design.

Too bad this little Leprechaun

is going to be just fine.

Your entire house is one big trap,

from the ceiling to the floor.

Nice try, indeed! But soon enough,

I’ll stroll right out the door!

The Leprechaun Be Gone 3000™

gave me quite a scare.

But without a four-leaf clover,

I won’t be caught in there!

You’ll never catch this Leprechaun.

Impossible! That’s a fact!

Unless, one day, a brilliant child

designs the perfect trap!

But who will that child be?

He loved the brightly colored toys in the toy store window,

especially the yellow airplane.

Building a snowman

Teddy built a big snowman with coal for eyes

and a carrot nose. He gave him a hat and

a wool scarf to keep him warm.

Writing to Santa

“Dear Santa,” wrote Teddy. “I have been a good bear

this year. For Christmas I would like a toy airplane.

I will leave a snack by the fireplace—milk and cookies

for you, and a carrot for Rudolph.”

Singing carols

One snowy evening Mom and Dad took

Teddy caroling. They sang his favorite Christmas songs

and then went home for hot chocolate.

Decorating the tree

Teddy and his dad decorated the tree together.

Teddy proudly put the last ornament on the very top:

the star he’d made the year before.

Making Christmas cards

Teddy made two cards, one with a tree for Mom and one

with a snowman for Dad. After carefully coloring them in,

he and his cat signed them with a kiss and a paw print.

Wrapping a present

Teddy got some colorful wrapping paper and

a long, silky ribbon. With his cat’s help

he remembered how to tie a big, beautiful bow.

Hanging the stocking

Before bedtime on Christmas Eve, Teddy hung his

stocking above the fireplace where he knew Santa would

find it. He imagined all the things it would be

filled with in the morning.

Looking for Santa’s sleigh

Teddy was so excited, he couldn’t sleep.

He looked out at the starry sky,

hoping to see Santa’s sleigh.

Opening presents from Santa

Early Christmas morning Teddy ran to the living room

and found his stocking overflowing with presents.

Poking out of the top was the yellow airplane.

Giving a present

“Merry Christmas,”

said Teddy as he gave his cat a special gift.

“I love you.”

Corduroy’s Best Halloween ever!

It was almost Halloween! Corduroy and his friends were getting ready. They went; to pick out a pumpkin for Corduroy’s Halloween party.

There was so much to do before the party. Corduroy raked the leaves. Rabbit, Puppy, and Mouse tried to help, but jumping in the leaf piles was much more fun!

Corduroy and his friends helped Mrs. Pig decorate her store windows. She thanked them with a hot, delicious pumpkin pie. Yum!

Back at Corduroy’s house, they all started talking about their costumes for Halloween.

“I’m going to be a pumpkin!” said Mouse.

“I’m going as a lion!” said Rabbit. “The king of the jungle!” “My costume is a secret,” said Puppy. “It’s really great. I want you all to be surprised.”

Corduroy was worried. He didn’t have an idea for a costume yet. What would he wear for Halloween?

Later, while Corduroy was shopping for his party, he spotted a whole bunch of costumes. Finding a costume would be easy with all of these choices.

Corduroy tried on the lion costume. Roar! He looked ferocious. But then he remembered that Rabbit was dressing up as a lion.

He tried on the pumpkin costume. It fit perfectly! But oops—didn’t Mouse say he was going as a pumpkin?

I know, thought Corduroy, I will be a scary witch with a pointy hat. But then he remembered something. His friend Dolly wanted to dress up as a witch.

Then he saw the perfect thing A dinosaur mask! Wow, thought Corduroy. I can make a great costume to go with that mask!

Corduroy went home to work on his costume. He found an old pair of green pajamas and some scraps of fabric.

He cut. He glued. He even sewed.

Finally, he was finished

Halloween night finally came. Corduroy was so excited for his party. Ding-dong! The doorbell rang! Who could it be? The party wasn’t supposed to start for another hour.

Corduroy opened the door. Puppy looked very sad. “Corduroy, I had the best costume, and it fell apart! It’s all in pieces. What should I do?”

Corduroy thought about it. He loved his costume. But Puppy was so sad. And Corduroy knew that friends were more important than costumes.

“It’s okay, Puppy. I have a costume you can wear!”

“Really?” said Puppy. “But Corduroy, what will you wear?”

“Don’t worry, 1 have an idea,” said Corduroy. But he didn’t, really. What would he wear?

Corduroy thought and thought. He thought all through the party. It was a really fun party, too! They bobbed for apples and carved jack-o’-lanterns and ate cookies and punch.

They even danced the Monster Mash!

It was almost time to go trick-or-treating. And Corduroy still didn’t have a costume.

Suddenly, he really did have an idea. He carefully moved everything off of the table. He held up the tablecloth. Perfect! thought Corduroy.

He cut holes for eyes and a mouth. He looked at the punch and chocolate stains all over the tablecloth.

“I am a ghost who just came from a Halloween party!” said Corduroy.

All his friends laughed. It was a great costume. “Let’s go trick-or-treat!”

Everybody loved Corduroy’s costume. “What a creative idea!” they said.

Corduroy felt proud. And Puppy loved his dinosaur costume. Everyone was happy!

It was the best Halloween ever!

WWII National Memorial - Dedication & Poem

Om May 29, 2004 The National WWII Memorial is slated for dedication. Paying tribute to the many Armed Forces who died in this war and for the many who supported this cause at home.

The National Memorial site is located between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.

This memorial to our men and women of WWII is a long awaited monument for the courage and the devoted loyalty of our Soldiers of the great war. It is with pride and an extreme deep > abiding love for those patriots who gave their lives and their souls to this cause. For those living who still remember the > horrors of the war and live with it each day, I say to them that the love they have given and the sorrows they go through make them extraordinary human beings.

The carefully planned and majestic testament to our Soldiers of WWII is most extraordinary and has great meaning for all our brave hearts who gave so much, so willingly and without reservation for the freedom that will always be a part of their valor.

When the eyes of the nation focused on Washington, D.C., Memorial Day weekend 2004, they took in the splendor and magnificence of the seven-acre National World War II Memorial on the National Mall. But, what they didn't see was the joint venture of Tompkins Builders and Grunley-Walsh Construction who served as general contractor for the project nor the artists behind this impressive tribute to American WWII veterans, Friedrich St. Florian and Carnegie Mellon alumnus Raymond Kaskey (A’67).

National World War II Memorial (2004) by Friedrich St. Florian revealed a small engraved doodle of a bald-headed man and the words “Kilroy was here” appear in two secluded areas of the Washington Memorial plaza. Read more about this discovery and gorgeous images.

Taps - A Bugle Call

"Taps" is a bugle call sounded to signal "lights out" at the end of a military day, and during patriotic memorial ceremonies and military funerals conducted by the United States Armed Forces. - Wiki

We in the United States have all heard the haunting song, "Taps."

It's the song that gives us that lump in our throats and usually tears in our eyes.

But, do you know the story behind the song? If not, I think you will be interested to find out about its humble beginnings.

Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison's Landing in Virginia.

The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land. During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moans of a soldier who lay severely wounded on the field.

Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention.

Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment.

When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead.

The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light, he saw the face of the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been

studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army.

The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission of his superiors to give his son a full military burial, despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted.

The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral.

The request was turned down since the soldier was a Confederate. But out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him only one musician.

The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's uniform. This wish was granted.

The haunting melody, we now know as "Taps" ... used at military funerals was born.

The words are:

From the sky ...

All is well ...

Safely rest ...

God is nigh...

Fading light ...

Dims the sight ...

And a star ...

Gems the sky...

Gleaming bright ...

Some Gave All - A Poem Of Gratitude For Memorial Day
Encouraging, poem for all the men and women who served in the military, giving their all. They are forever our honored heroes.

The Greatest Love

The greatest love I was ever shown,
Was given me by those unknown.

Whose love for all of those like me,
Was given without vanity,
Was given freely without remorse,
Free-flying into the battle course.

With courage fighting our enemy,
So our land would always home the free.

So my own children can live and grow,
My children that they did not know.
Those brave warriors, whose lives were lost.
All paying the terrible, ultimate cost.

The greatest heroes, woman and man,
Who gave their lives in a foreign land,
Whose last sight was the desert sand,
All led to glory by God's tender hand.

Never again to see
This sweet land, that they so loved,
That they made their stand.
Never again, to take a breath free,
Or to feel the touch of family,
They gave up their lives so
That it remained free, for they so loved
This great country.

With pride we stand
And voice what we want,
While overlooking soldier souls haunt,
Smiling while children laugh and play,
In freedom growing day by day.

All because of those unknown,
Who's greatest wish
Was to just come home.

I pray that maybe,
When they take their last breath,
That they closed their eyes,
And just before death,
Took the vision to glory,
Of America green,
And smiled when thinking
Of those unseen.

President's Day 2023 presents a few little diddy's about the President's of the United States past and present.

George Washington, the first of all,
By Adams was succeeded
And then came Thomas Jefferson,
Who bought the land we needed

John Quincy Adams was the next
And then came Andrew Jackson
And after him Van Buren came
With panic and distraction ...

Next came Adams and he was fine.

Jefferson bought Louisiana for you and me.
His face is on the nickel for us to see.

Madison fled the capital with First Lady Dolley,

Monroe had a doctrine that kept Europe away,
and we would force them out if they didn't obey.

John Quincy Adams was John Adam's Son,
choosing men with the same name had begun.

Andrew Jackson was tough as could be,
And that's why they called him "Old Hickory."

Martin Van Buren had the nickname "OK."
Harrison was too old they say.

Tyler was an accident, but worked with all his might.

Polk shouted, "Fifty-four forty or fight".

"Old Rough and Ready" fought the Mexican War,
but Zachary Taylor didn't last four.

Milliard Fillmore learned to read.
Franklin Pierce had the memory of speed.

James Buchanan let the south get away.
Lincoln brought it back, and it's still here today.

Andrew Johnson had to be impeached,
but two-thirds of the Senate votes couldn't be reached.

U.S. Grant had a name to be feared.
Rutherford B. Hayes wore a long beard.

James A. Garfield could write with both hands.
Chester A. Arthur was the gentleman of the land.

Cleveland served two different terms and that was the truth.
A candy bar was named after his daughter, "Baby Ruth".

Benjamin Harrison wore his grandfather's hat.
He served four years and that was that.

Grover Cleveland was really tough.
He came back for more because he hadn't had enough.

McKinley has a claim to fame.
Our highest mountain bears his name.

Roosevelt was the first president to ride in a plane.
"Teddy" is a bear that holds his name.

William Howard Taft weighed a ton.
Woodrow Wilson won World War One.

Warren G. Harding made himself heard,
but silent Calvin Coolidge hardly ever said a word.

Herbert Hoover watched the stock market crash.
The Great Depression wouldn't last.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was our president four times.
His head was engraved on our dimes.

Harry Truman dropped the big bomb.
He won World War II and brought the cold war on.

Eisenhower was very liked.
He went by the name of "Ike".

Kennedy, for a president, was very young.
Johnson took the oath on Air Force One.

Richard Nixon said, "I'm not a crook!"
Ford let Nixon off the hook.

Jimmy Carter had a great big grin,
but inflation caught up to him after he was in.

Ronald Reagan was a movie star with a great smile.
George Bush ended the Gulf War with style.

Bill Clinton stayed out of jail.
He said he tried it, but he didn't inhale.

Now it's another man's chance to be the one.
The man of the hour is George Bush's son.

He's got the same name, but don't let it trouble you.
He's George W. Bush, but you can call him "W".

First to be elected of African descent,
Obama our Forty-Fourth President.

Donald Trump, the Forty-Fifth Head of State,
An entrepreneur of real estate.

Forty-six, Joe Biden here we see,
Now he leads our country!

"Spunky Old Broads" Day

February is Spunky Old Broads Month and February 1st is Spunky Old Broads Day! You know some Spunky Old Broads, either personally or as characters in books, television shows and movies (I always think of the Golden Girls and Hallmark's Maxine).

Spunky old broads are positive, fun, butt-kicking mature women over the age of 50 who refuse to sit back quietly and get old. They want excitement! They want a regret-free life!

Today's zany holiday is dedicated to the saying, "Old Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." Now, those of you not in the know might ask yourself, "Gee, what exactly is a spunky old broad?" And if you do, then you obviously aren't one.
While Spunky Old Broads Month and the Red Hat Society are not affiliated with each other, I think both show the spirit and enthusiasm of embracing middle age and beyond instead of automatically declaring it the enemy. Besides, we are so wise by the time we reach middle age, we can’t help but laugh at some of the absurdities of life.
The best known old spunky broads that I could think of are The Golden Girls.

Chinese New Year (Also called Spring Festival, Lunar New Year) is the festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar and solar Chinese calendar. In Chinese and other East Asian cultures, the festival is commonly referred to as the Spring Festival. Observances traditionally take place from New Year’s Eve, the evening preceding the first day of the year to the Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the year. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February

The Chinese New Year is associated with several myths and customs. The festival was traditionally a time to honor deities as well as ancestors.

It is also a tradition for every family to thoroughly clean their house, in order to sweep away any ill fortune and to make way for incoming good luck. Another custom is the decoration of windows and doors with red paper-cuts and couplets. Popular themes among these paper-cuts and couplets include good fortune or happiness, wealth, and longevity. Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes.

Chinese zodiac years are represented by 12 animals. Each Chinese lunar year has a Chinese zodiac sign animal. The Chinese zodiac year's stsarting date is a little different from the Gregorian year. It starts from Chinese New Year.
