In recent weeks, I got a chance to test drive a number of electric vehicles (EVs), so I have learned a lot about how to charge an EV and the different apps, different ways, different charging stations, etc.

I test drove the 2026 Kia EV4 and 2026 Volve EX30 Cross Country.

The 2026 Kia EV4 has a built-in NAC port that is compatible to charge at selective Tesla supercharging station. I also charged the EV4 at the Kia Stouffville dealership which doesn’t have a NAC port but have a DC port, which the media team gave me a DC adapter to charge at DC port. I just simply plug in the DC adapter to the DC port before plugging into the Kia EV4.

As for the Volvo EX30 Cross Country, it doesn’t have a built-in NAC port, which right off the bat, I can’t charge it at a selective Tesla supercharging station. The Volvo EX30 has a CCS port, which is typical for many non-Tesla EVs. I have to download an EV app such as “FLO” in this case and found the nearest FLO charging stations near me. Apparently, there are many FLO charging stations all over the city, however, many have the slow Level 2 stations that are commonly found at people’s homes.

But if you want to find DC ports, it’s not that many yet. Luckily, there is a Shell gas station nearby that offers fast charging DC ports which makes it quicker to charge.

After experiencing all these charging stations, here are my feedback and opinions:

– Unless you have installed a charging port at your home, constantly trying to find a public charging station is not difficult but it does cost me time, effort, anxiety as not all charging stations offer fast charging ports. Many offer the Level 2 which is common at home but when you are at home, you can plug in your EV and then leave it overnight and then you can cook, clean your house and do other things. But when you are using a public charging station, you have to sit in your EV to kill time or go to grocery stores or shopping mall to kill time. I am not a shopper, so finding a mall to shop doesn’t make sense to me.

– I also have to find a charging station that is available coz sometimes, some of these charging stations have 3 or 4 ports and if occupied, you are pretty much screwed. You either have to wait (which could take up to 30 minutes or more depending on how long these pre-occupied EV owners going to charge their EVs). Sometimes, you have to come back at a later time. Although many apps offer to notify you when the EV ports become available, it’s annoying to worry about charging stations. What happens in the future when everyone has a EV, are there enough infrastructure available?

– I found that if you charge your EV at a public charging station, it’s not that cheap. It’s pricier coz I guess if I want to charge it quick with Tesla supercharging station or DC level station, the charging time is shorter but also mean it’s more expensive. For example, it costs me $25 CDN to charge 20% of my Kia EV4 at selective Tesla supercharging station. That’s quite steep in my opinion.

– Now, when I charged the Volvo EX30 from 12% to 80%, it took about 46 minutes of charging time and it costs me about $28 CDN. Sure, it’s much cheaper than filling up $70 full tank of gas, but I value time and effort dearly, so I am not sure sitting around for 45 minutes to 60 minutes is worth my time.

– Not sure why all of these charging port has such short leash, for my Kia EV4, the charging port is on the front right side, I have to park the EV4 over the curb and get as close as I can before the port can plug into my EV4. Another time, there was a port available but since the Volvo EX30 port is at rear left, that port is only good for front right or front left, so no matter how I park or tilt my Volvo EX30, I can’t get close to the port. Meanwhile the other 2 EVs beside me occupied the other 2 charging ports. It sux when a port is open but I can’t charge coz it’s in the wrong side from my EX30.

– I have not done a road trip across Ontario or Canada yet coz I am not sure how robust or lack thereof with the charging stations. If driving a gas engine car takes 5 hours from Toronto to Montreal, I don’t know if I want to spend extra hours in between stops to charge my EV to Montreal. Would it take more than 5 hours with a EV from Toronto to Montreal coz of charging time?

I also think I will have anxiety if I am on a road trip especially in extreme winter trying to find a charging station (unoccupied one too) on a road trip in unfamiliar terriorty.

– Finding a charging port that is relatively safe is something that I wouldn’t have thought about. When I was charging at a charging station located outside a shopping mall that was closed. I was approached by a guy and ask me if I have a lighter coz he wants to smoke his weed. Quite honestly, if I have a gas engine vehicle, I wouldn’t see myself hanging around at a parking spot in the evening and having to deal with such person asking me for a lighter. Coz at a gas station, I will just pump my car and leave in minutes.

Thus, what I learn is that…when charging my EV at an outdoor charging location, a new criteria for me is finding a location that I think it’s safe and I found gas station with charging station is safer than me at a dim parking lot. I did find some of these charging locations are located at weird quiet parking spots that safety could be at risk.

Overall Summary:

I think if someone decides to install a charger at home and don’t plan to charge elsewhere or on a road trip often, then having an EV would make sense as it’s cheaper charging at home and although it takes longer time with a Level 2 port, it’s ok coz you plug it at home and you can get inside the house to work, clean, cook or relax and the next morning, you have a fully charged EV to go to school or work.

But for me, if I don’t plan to have my own charger at home and constantly need to charge at public areas, I am not sure if  I want an EV. Moreover, I also don’t know if I want to wait around for a quick charge when I can just simply find a gas station, pump the gas and get out of there without having to wait around. Time is so essential to me.

For the time being, I don’t want to have mileage anxiety, every time I turn on the heat or use up defogger or power, I worry the charge drops quickly especially in extreme cold winters.

Overall Summary:

In my opinion, MINI has done a great job continuing to be unique, different, quirky about its MINI lineup. Every model looks good, I luv the colour combo offerings throughout its lineup. For instance, this MINI Countryman S ALL4 comes with an indigo blue body paint and coupled with the champagne roofline, side panels. It’s so different.

If someone has already owned a BMW (which this MINI shares the same platform as the X1, they may consider switching to this MINI). Personally, I prefer this MINI Countryman design and quirkyness and colour combo than the BMW X1.

In my opinion, no car is perfect! I think every car has its pros and cons and there are always room for improvements.

During this entire week, I got to test drive this 2026 MINI Countryman S ALL4. And here are things that I like and dislike about this sporty 4-door SUV.

Like (Pros):

– Luv the unique colour combo offerings MINI continues to offer for its entire lineups. You can mix & match the body paint with a different colour roofline or rear view mirrors. While many other brands are offering limited and boring palette, MINI continues to shine and being unique with its brand.

– Interior is quirky, maintaining the signature central circular LED screen as infotainment system.

– I also like the pseudo key ignition at the centre. When I turned and twisted the key, I could feel the vibration and the sound of the engine being turned on. It’s still not the same as a real key slotted into the ignition but this is by far the most impressive setup I have seen so far. Most opted for the boring start/stop button, I got to give props to MINI for sticking to the traditional and have some sentimental value to drivers who appreciates this nice touch.

– Luv the fabric materials being used on the dashboard and on the side door panels.

– The blue fabric colour (front side door panels) transitioned into sandy brown (rear side door panels), that’s a nice touch.

– Luv the overall steering feel of this MINI Countryman. It has a more heavy feel to it to provide me with more responsive feedback. Moreover, I luv the thickness of this steer wheel. It feels so good, accurate and precise turning radius to the road.

– Luv the mini fabric box at the central front. You pulled the fabric and lid is opened, super functional and yet unique at the same time.

– There is something unique to the exhaust sound or the way the gears are being shifted in this vehicle. Not sure if it’s the turbo charged, but you can hear the gas pressure or shifting sound which makes this MINI super unique.

– I enjoyed the stability of the suspension, it’s sporty yet it’s very comfy and able to absorb bumps admirably.

– Overall, the materials, technology, the quirky of this MINI makes it stands out from the rest of the competition.

– This new generation of MINI Countryman S ALL4 offers good value. It’s much bigger than its predecessor, increase horsepower and torque. More space for the passengers as well as the storage space. It offers many standard features from panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, power adjustable driver and front passenger seats. It’s definitely fun-to-drive. Interestingly, I prefer this MINI Countryman than BMW X1 which shares the same platform and size.

– By the way, great sound system inside this MINI.

Dislike (Cons):

– The sound proof could be better especially if I expect this to be a more premium vehicle. Unfortunately, I could hear lots of wind noise especially on highway speed.

– I would prefer more compartment spaces throughout the cabin but although it offers some storage space, I would prefer more. For example, I would prefer the armrest for the driver could have also serve as a storage but it’s not. It doesn’t have any storage space whatsoever.

– Personally, I prefer and missed the silver chrome materials that dominated in previous MINI generations than this new one. There are more plastic components on this new MINI than its predecessors.

– Not a fan of the cheap plasticky of the speedometer gauge in front of the driver.

– The exterior and interior is very subjective especially for MINI owners who once owned previous generations. Many of them told me that they didn’t really like the latest generation as it shines away from looking like a MINI. Personally, not going to lie, I prefer the leapfrog circular headlights than the new one but it’s still MINI enough for me to distinguish it from other boring brands. The rear lights look very blend and simple too for this MINI but however, I would say, the over portion ratio for this new MINI Countryman is still decently able to distinguish itself from its competitors.

Overall Summary:

Did you know…that in recent years, you can charge your new non-Tesla EVs at selective Tesla supercharging stations near you? When I test drive the all-new 2026 Kia EV4, the media team informed me this INFO and I think it’s super helpful knowing I have more options and locations to charge the EV4.

I did some research. Apparently, in the past, Tesla only purposely built these charging stations mainly for its own Tesla vehicles. That’s coz they want to monopolize and entice buyers to purchase Tesla products only as Tesla will offer more charging stations for Tesla products. Anyone who wants to buy a non-Tesla EVs will have a harder time to find the nearest charging station.

But recently, Tesla has opened up the ability for non-Tesla EVs to charge an selective supercharging station and Kia EV4 is one of them. I think one major reason is that…most Tesla owners charge their own Tesla at home, unless they are really low and needs charging, there are many public Tesla charging stations under utilize. So in order to maximize their investments in these charging infrastructures, I guess Tesla figures they can make some money by letting non-Tesla EVs to charge at some of their Tesla charging stations. Besides, it’s a lot more expensive to charge at these public Tesla supercharging stations than charging at home.

Before you are narrowing to buying a non-Tesla EV, perhaps you want to do more research on where you can charge your non-Tesla EV. You can surely charge at the comfort of your own home if you plan and should install a charging port at your home. But perhaps you want to charge at a public charging station. If you think being able for your non-Tesla EV to be able to be charged at a selective Tesla supercharging station is important to you, then you should make sure the EV you are planning to purchase is indeed compatible to charge at a Tesla station. Or you may want to purchase adapters that will fit the ports to fit your EV.

How to Charge Non-Tesla EVs at a Selective Tesla Supercharging Station:

Follow the steps below and in this case, I am using Kia EV4 as an example.

– Go to your app store and download the Tesla app.

– Create a new account. Create your own profile. Fill in all the fields the form requires you to do.

– In particular, there is a section that asks you which brand and which model you are trying to charge at the Tesla super charging station. In this case, I chose Kia, EV4 and 2026 as the model year (yes, they do ask you the year of your model).

– They also ask for your credit card INFO so they have it in the app to charge you when you are ready to charge your EV4.

– Once you have successfully created a Tesla account, go to the map and type in your address, selective charging station locations will popup and you can see which one is nearest you and which one you prefer to drive your Kia EV4 to charge up.

MoVernie TIP: When you get a hang of the Tesla app, you can filter your search by choosing which one offers Super charging, DC charging or Level 2 charging (slowest of the 3). Of course, the faster the charging option, the quicker it charges your EV4, that also means it’s more pricey to charge. Thus, some opt for slower Level 2 charging, go to a mall for a few hours of shopping, so it’s cheaper but takes longer time. Some don’t mind slower charging coz they are going to spend at the mall for a few hours anyways. It all depends on your lifestyle whether they want it quick or take your time.

NOTE: Make sure you choose the right charging location. For example, I made a rookie mistake when I search for the nearest Tesla super charging station near me. I pulled up, found a port, select the port, plug in the charger, but my app indicated that it’s not charging. The lighting symbol on my EV4 port is showing white instead of green light. So, how come the plug fits but no juice is flowing into my EV4? Well….coz it’s a Tesla station doesn’t mean it opens up for non-Tesla. I stupidly drove to the nearest Tesla station thinking it has ports to charge non-Tesla EVs, but turns out certain Tesla stations are still dedicated to Tesla vehicles only. So…I went to another location, turns out it was the right super charging station and I was able to charge my Kia EV4.

MoVernie TIP: If you like the app to notify you when a charging port becomes available, you can opt to receive notifications. Coz as you can imagine, some charging stations are super busy, and since each car takes 30 minutes or 60 minutes, there is no point for you to wait around for an open port. Thus, it’s nice to know when a charging port is available and you try to the location to start charging.

Now, my 2026 Kia EV4 has a built-in NAC port which fits the Tesla charging station coz I presume Tesla vehicles also use NAC port (North American Charging) ports. Now, what happens if you go to a Non-Tesla charging station?

Well….out of curiosity, I also went to a Kia dealership and see how their charging station works. Apparently, it’s a DC charging port. So…what happens when this 2026 Kia EV4 has a built-in NAC port and not a DC compatible? The media fleet team provided my EV4 with a DC adapter and a Level 2 adapter. To charge my EV4 at a DC charging port, I just simply have to put the DC adapter into the charging port so it will fit into my EV4.

At the DC charging station, simply scan the QR code, it leads me to a link, create a profile, fill in my name, etc. and add in the credit card INFO. Plug in the DC adapter into the charging port, plug into my Kia EV4 and the charging begins.

Quite honestly, the nice part is that…many of these apps or charging ports are easily to setup and create a profile to charge. The unfortunate part is…the number of apps I have to download that does pretty much the same thing. I just wish all brands or all companies just implement one single universal app that applies to all machines so I don’t have to download so many apps and having to create so many new accounts and spending time to figure things out at the stations before I can charge the EVs.

I hope you found these steps helpful in your quest to charge up your Kia EV4.
