Phineas and David tackle comedy today and examine how comedy, focusing on stand-up comedy and listen to some songs that started as jokes. After a crushing language exam, David and Phineas discuss David’s trip to Birmingham over the weekend to see the Mountain Goats perform and Phineas’ success in building a bookcase, as well as some shakeups in the SEC, before moving on to the topic of the day: titles. David and Phineas chat about Phineas’ trip to Mobile over the weekend and David’s new appreciation for Jake Gyllenhaal after watching Nightcrawler. The hosts move slightly away from the topic of creative non-fiction of the last few weeks to now discuss journalism and they interview Jim Little, editor-in-chief of The Auburn Plainsman, to get the scoop in the Writer Spotlight. Phineas also challenges David to choose one original song he actually likes by an artist who he otherwise feels is vastly overrated. David cheats, of course. Also, if you think the last segment sounds a little different than the live version as though we recreated it after the fact in some elaborate attempt to fool the listening public into thinking nothing went wrong with the recording and our backups, then you are crazy.

Phineas and David chat about sports including the Auburn and Alabama losses and the moderate consolation of a Chelsea win against the “evil” Arsenal and Phineas’ boy Peyton Manning’s win with the Broncos. The gentlemen then return to the realm of creative non-fiction to discuss travel writing as a genre, and highlight David Foster Wallace’s “Consider the Lobster” in the Writing Spotlight. Along the road, they also play some New Wave music with a theme of travel that was in no way accidental. [ Note: There’s a small break in the audio about 42 minutes in, but just assume that Phineas said something brilliant in that few seconds which is now lost for all time.]

Phineas and David are joined live in the studio by special guest Carson Williford. The three chat about their weekends and the rough Auburn football game before launching into an interesting discussion of creative non-fiction and its sub-genres. David and Phineas discuss the historic SCOTUS ruling on same-sex marriage and their support for more rights for Americans regardless of personal belief. After Phineas talks for a while before realizing David’s mic wasn’t on, they talk about peer review and what it means to give good feedback. Then Andy Arick shares his writing process and reveals his true thoughts about Phineas in the Writer Spotlight. Phineas and David talk about storytelling conventions and what it means to follow or break them.
