The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has declared that he would work to ensure President Bola Tinubu is not re-elected in the 2027 general election.

Baba-Ahmed, a former Special Adviser on Political Matters to Tinubu, stated this on Sunday during an interview with Channels TV, while reacting to claims that he was working for the President following his previous role in Tinubu’s administration.

He emphasised that he worked in Tinubu’s administration and not for him(Tinubu).

He explained, “The people also said we are working for Tinubu, can you believe this. People say things like if you are not in this particular party, you must be working for Tinubu because you are only to split the vote. I worked in Tinubu’s administration, I am not working for him.

“I will work to get Tinubu out of place (Presidential seat) because I think he is bad news for Nigerian’s future.”

Asked whether he could work with Tinubu again, Baba-Ahmed ruled out the possibility.

“No, if I could work for him, I would not have walked out of the office that they appointed me in. I am not saying that only PRP can get Tinubu out of power but we have a major contribution to make and we are looking for every legitimate opportunity to make that work,” he added.

Speaking on the chances of the opposition coalition defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress despite internal disagreements, Baba-Ahmed said the APC had already weakened itself through poor governance and anti-democratic practices.

"We can, by being better than him. First, he (Tinubu) has done half of our work. He has messed up this country. He has made life miserable, more insecure and Nigerians are desperately unhappy and we know this for a fact. He knows it for a fact, unless they don’t tell him the truth and how the country is.

“So, half the work has already been done. The rest of the work has to be done by us. The heavy lifting. We have to put our resources together and put our energy together and decide whether we can shun selfishness or we can produce who get what.

“But the issue is to have a change of government in 2027. I genuinely believe that it is possible to defeat the APC. I also believe that the APC has substantially damaged itself. Maybe what happened in its primaries and we said so. APC will implode and it is imploding.

“It is sitting on people’s right. It is deciding who becomes what, who becomes this. A handful of people, millions of people, who becomes the governor. This is not democracy, APC has destroyed the democratic traditions in this country. It will send a handful of people to decide who is where. You, you will become this, you go and more worse, he has raised the level of poverty in the level of the selection,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed, a former spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum, previously served in Tinubu’s administration before resigning his appointment.

He resigned from his position in April 2025, as the Special Adviser on Political Matters to Tinubu, nearly two years after his appointment in 2023.

EXTENSION OF DEADLINE FOR COLLECTION OF NDC EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FORMS

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) hereby informs all aspirants and the general public that the deadline for the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for the State Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, and Governorship positions, earlier scheduled to close at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, 17th May, 2026, has been extended to 12:00 midnight on Sunday, 24th May, 2026.

Screening of aspirants who have purchased and completed the Expression of Interest Forms will commence on Tuesday, 19th May, 2026, and will end at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 26th May, 2026.

The collection and return of Nomination Forms for all screened and cleared aspirants will commence on Wednesday, 20th May, 2026, and close on Tuesday, 26th May, 2026.
All aspirants are required to ensure strict compliance with the deadline, as no extension will be granted beyond the closing date.

However, the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for the Office of the President is hereby closed.
All aspirants are expected to appear for screening and pre-qualification interviews at designated venues across the country, as earlier advertised, with the following documents:
• Educational certificates
• Birth certificate or declaration of age
• Four (4) recent passport photographs
• Copy of voter’s identification card
• NDC membership card
• Copy of his/her CV (Curriculum Vitae)
All documents submitted to the Screening Committee must be in six (6) copies each.

Screening shall be based, among other criteria, on:
• The wishes of the electorate
• Local peculiarities
• Capacity and competence of aspirants
• Character

The Screening Committee is to take note of the party’s affirmative action policy for women, youths, and persons living with disabilities

Aspirants are also encouraged to pursue consensus-building, as only cleared aspirants will be eligible to purchase Nomination Forms.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the federal government’s response to the renewed anti-immigrant tensions in South Africa.

At least two Nigerians have been killed since anti-foreigner tensions started to heighten in South Africa last month.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Phrank Shaibu, his senior special assistant on public communication, Abubakar said it is embarrassing that Nigeria appeared to have been “shamed into action” while smaller African countries moved swiftly to protect their citizens.

The former vice-president said the government of Ghana had demonstrated urgency by approving the evacuation of more than 300 distressed citizens following the latest wave of xenophobic threats.

He said the Nigerian government has been hesitant and reactive despite the country’s diplomatic stature on the continent.

“It is deeply troubling that Nigeria, a country that prides itself as the leader of the Black world and the giant of Africa, once again found itself reacting instead of leading in a moment of continental crisis,” the statement reads.

“When the first signs of danger emerged, smaller African nations acted with clarity, compassion, and urgency.

“Ghana moved decisively. Others issued strong advisories and activated protective mechanisms for their nationals.

But Nigeria, whose citizens have historically borne the brunt of xenophobic violence in South Africa, moved with the lethargy that has become the defining trademark of this administration.”

Abubakar said the issue is not whether the federal government eventually responded, but whether the response reflected urgency and leadership.

“Yes, the government has now spoken. Yes, repatriation talks have been mentioned,” he said.

But the critical question remains: why did it take external pressure and the decisive action of others before Nigeria found its voice? This is not about whether the government eventually responded.

“It is about whether that response reflected the urgency, seriousness, and leadership expected of a responsible government. By every objective standard, it did not.”

The former vice-president said Nigerians in South Africa had endured repeated cycles of intimidation, harassment, and xenophobic hostility for years.

Businesses have been destroyed. Lives have been endangered. Families have lived in fear,” he said.

Yet successive Nigerian responses have followed the same tired script—summon diplomats, issue cautious statements, and retreat into bureaucratic inertia until the next crisis erupts.”

Abubakar said a government’s primary responsibility is the protection of its citizens.

“A government that waits until other nations have taken the lead before acting sends a dangerous signal: that the lives of its citizens are negotiable,” he said.

“It is frankly humiliating that Ghana, with far fewer diplomatic resources and citizens abroad, projected stronger leadership and clearer compassion than Nigeria in this moment.”

He urged the federal government to issue a strong travel advisory, activate evacuation arrangements for willing Nigerians, and intensify diplomatic engagement with South African authorities.

Abubakar also called on the African Union to establish a lasting continental framework against xenophobic violence.

“Africa cannot continue to preach unity while tolerating periodic persecution of fellow Africans,” he said.

“And Nigeria cannot continue to posture as a continental leader while behaving like a reluctant observer.”

The former vice-president asked the ministry of foreign affairs to demonstrate urgency and competence in handling the situation.

Meanwhile, over 130 Nigerians in South Africa have voluntarily registered for repatriation following attacks targeting foreign nationals in the country.

Fresh Loan: ADC Accuses FG Of Running ‘Ponzi Economy’

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, yesterday, accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of running what it described as a ‘Ponzi economy’ after the Federal Government moved to secure another $1.25 billion World Bank loan despite Nigeria’s growing public debt estimated at about N159.28 trillion.

The opposition party said the fresh loan request has further fuelled concerns over the country’s rising debt exposure at a time millions of Nigerians are struggling with soaring food prices, inflation, unemployment, business failures and worsening living conditions, nearly two years after the government introduced sweeping economic reforms.

ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement, yesterday, said the government had continued to borrow heavily without visible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.

Abdullahi said: “This is why the ADC says the Tinubu administration is running a Ponzi economy, where new loans are constantly being taken to service old debts and cover fiscal failures, while ordinary Nigerians are left to carry the burden.

“At this point, Nigerians must ask a simple question: if this government keeps borrowing trillions of naira every few months, why are Nigerians getting poorer, and why is life getting harder for the majority?”

According to ADC, Nigeria’s rising debt profile has failed to produce noticeable improvements in critical sectors or ease the economic pressure facing households and businesses across the country.

It said: “Today, Nigeria’s total public debt has risen to about N159.28 trillion, yet food prices continue to rise daily, electricity tariffs are increasing, the naira remains weak, businesses are shutting down, insecurity is spreading, and millions of young Nigerians remain unemployed.

“Families are cutting down on meals, manufacturers are struggling to survive, and small businesses are collapsing under the weight of inflation and poor economic conditions.”

The ADC also raised concerns over the Federal Government’s projected debt servicing obligations for 2026, warning that resources needed for development could be swallowed by loan repayments.

Abdullahi said: “It is noteworthy that President Tinubu himself has declared that Nigeria will spend about $11.6 billion, over N15 trillion, on debt servicing alone in 2026.

“In simple terms, trillions of naira that should have gone into roads, hospitals, schools, electricity, security, agriculture, and job creation will instead go into paying creditors and servicing old loans.

“Each time they want to borrow money, this government invents a new acronym. From armour to reset, hope, or spin, these are merely different labels for the same pretext to continue borrowing without any recourse to measurable impacts on the lives of Nigerians.

“The government removed fuel subsidy, devalued the Naira, increased electricity tariffs, and imposed painful economic policies on citizens, promising that temporary sacrifice would lead to long-term recovery.”

“Instead, Nigerians have continued to suffer one of the worst cost-of-living crises in recent history, while the government continues to pile on more debts.

“The ADC is equally concerned that the National Assembly, which should serve as checks on executive excesses, has been reduced to a mere rubber stamp, approving massive borrowing requests with little resistance or serious public scrutiny.

“Nigeria cannot continue mortgaging the future of unborn generations simply to keep the current administration politically afloat.

“At some point, somebody will pay for all this borrowing, and sadly, ordinary Nigerians are already paying through hunger, inflation, unemployment, business closures, and a collapsing standard of living,” Abdullahi said

2027: PDP Screens Goodluck Jonathan, Others Tomorrow

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has scheduled to screen former president Goodluck Jonathan tomorrow, Tuesday as the lone presidential candidate of party.

Former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, former governor of Plateau State, Jona Jang and a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tom Ikimi have been listed among a committee of 14 members to screen Jonathan described as a lone candidate by the party.

Other members of the committee were Chief Olabode George, Babangida Aliyu, Maryam ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenin, Dr. Abdul Bulama, Dr. Esther Uduehi, Edo State PDP chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, Dr. Sunday Solarium and Chief Anicho Okoro, who would serve as administrative secretary of the committee.

The statement by the PDP only said a lone presidential aspirant, but on inquiries by THISDAY, it was gathered that Goodluck Jonathan was the lone presidential aspirant.

Last week, the national Publicity Secretary of the faction, Ini Ememobong, disclosed that former president Jonathan has successfully registered as a member of the party in the fresh digital registration exercise directed by INEC.

The PDP faction backed by the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, also announced that it was set to screen 748 house of representatives aspirants, 198 senatorial aspirants, and 112 governorship aspirants.

The screening committee would screen 2122 states houses of assembly aspirants. The exercise will commence tomorrow, Tuesday in different states.

The party, in a statement posted on its official Facebook page on Sunday, said one presidential aspirant is also expected to be screened by the screening committee.

According to the statement, the screening exercise would take place nationwide on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

The statement said the Interim National Working Committee (iNWC) has also released the names of members to serve on the Screening Committees and Screening Appeal Panels.

It added that the publication of the screening details “is in accordance with the party’s guidelines and timetable for the conduct of the 2027 general elections.”

Meanwhile, a former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Eze Madumere, has expressed commitment to deliver victory, restore visibility and inclusivity to Owerri zone in the 2027 Senatorial election.

He said he was endowed with capacity, contact, and the reach to actualise his dream, on the platform of the PDP, expressing enthusiasm in respect of the overwhelming support of the populace and vowed to deliver dividends of democracy.

The human capital development expert stressed that he has paid his dues politically and built relationships across the state and beyond.

According to him, he intended to leverage same to develop the socio-economic development of Owerri zone through youth empowerment and job creation.

“I have the political reach, capability, capacity to win this election for our great party, the PDP. My name is not a strange name in Imo State. You cannot mention Prince Eze Madumere and ask, who is that?

“The people know me. They know my track records. They know what I stand for, which represents equity and justice. Be rest assured, I am fully prepared, fully ready, and fully committed to this election.

Elliot Alleges Intimidation, Withdrawal Of Security Ahead Of Primary (Video)

A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliott, has alleged intimidation, political victimisation and the withdrawal of his security aides ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for Surulere I constituency.

In a viral video circulated on Sunday, Mr Elliott accused unnamed party leaders and local government officials of allegedly coercing party members to support a preferred aspirant ahead of the APC House of Assembly primaries scheduled for 20 May.

The lawmaker, who represents Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, alleged that some local government officials were removed from their positions because of their support for him.

According to him, the political atmosphere within the Surulere chapter of the APC had become tense due to alleged intimidation and attempts to force party members to support certain candidates.

“Intimidation, coercion, twisting and forcing people to follow their own candidate is what is existing today in Surulere,” Mr Elliott said in the video.

“Telling them that they will not be beneficiaries of some empowerment that is coming some other time. Please, this is not done and should not be done.”

The actor turned politician alleged that the local government leadership had openly backed another aspirant months before the primaries.

“It is bad enough that the LGA and the local government already took a side months ago. The local government already took a side to support a particular aspirant,” he stated.

Mr Elliott also claimed that several individuals associated with him had allegedly suffered repercussions because of their political alignment.

“We’ve been intimidated so much so that a lot of people from the local government have been fired because they follow me,” he alleged.

The lawmaker further alleged that his security personnel were withdrawn under unclear circumstances.

“My security personnel were taken away from me yesterday for reasons best known to them. Now I am left alone to myself. What have I done?” he queried.

He also raised concerns over possible violence during the primaries, alleging that some persons planned to mobilise outsiders to disrupt the exercise.

“They are coming out to fight us. They want to bring people from outside and from within to cause mayhem and trouble,” he alleged.

Mr Elliott appealed to party leaders to intervene and ensure that the primaries are peaceful, transparent and credible.

“I want to ask our party chieftains, please investigate this matter,” he said.

Despite the allegations, the lawmaker said he would accept the outcome of the primaries if the process is free and fair.

“By the grace of God, if I, Desmond Olusola Elliott, win, Alhamdulillah. If I lose, I will throw my support behind the winner. But please let it be under a free and fair election,” he added.

He also urged his supporters not to be intimidated, assuring them that adequate security would be provided during the exercise.

Mr Elliott further used the video to campaign for other APC candidates, including Wasiu Eshilokun, Kadri Hamzat and Bola Tinubu.

Earlier, the Director-General of the Desmond Elliott Campaign Organisation, Bless Koye, announced his withdrawal of support for the lawmaker’s fourth-term bid.

Mr Koye declared his support for Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, an APC aspirant for Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

“I’ll decamp from Desmond group to Barakat group,” Mr Koye reportedly said while announcing his decision.

The latest controversy comes days after Mr Elliott publicly apologised to Femi Gbajabiamila over his alleged involvement in moves to impeach Lagos Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

Mr Gbajabiamila had claimed that he nearly lost his position as Chief of Staff to President Tinubu because of Mr Elliott’s alleged role in the impeachment plot.

According to reports, Mr Gbajabiamila said President Tinubu informed him about Mr Elliott’s alleged involvement, which he initially denied until the State Security Service (SSS) reportedly confirmed it.

Reacting during an appearance on TVC’s Your View, Mr Elliott apologised to the president’s chief of staff, describing him as his political mentor.

“The Gbaja this and Gbaja that of the world. My own baba. I know you’re upset, and I want to say I’m sorry in front of everyone,” he said.

“And I grew up learning everything I knew in politics through him.”

Mr Elliott also hinted during the interview that he was seeking another term in the Lagos Assembly.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara’s re-election bid on the platform of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has collapsed, THEWILL can authoritatively report, after failing to get the support of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, his political godfather.

Both Fubara and Wike have been struggling for supremacy and control of the APC machinery in the oil-rich State ahead of the 2027 general poll.

An authoritative party source, who asked to remain anonymous, told THEWILL that the President directed the National Chairman of the APC, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda to give Wike full control of the party’s structure in Rivers State and approve all his nominees as candidates of the party in the next election. “Wike has nominated Kingsley Chinda, who currently represents Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives as his preferred choice for the APC’s governorship ticket.”

Fubara had unsuccessfully sought the president’s support. “The President said he should go and talk to Wike about it. If Wike agrees then he has his full support. As you already know, Wike has repeatedly said Fubara will not get a second term. So we will not give him the ticket to our party,” the source said.

THEWILL reports that Chinda was until last week a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and served as Minority Leader in the House. He was cleared by the APC screening panel last week to run in the governorship primary.

Out of the 31 incumbent governors on the platform of the APC, 13 first-term Governors are seeking a second term in office in the 2027 election. They have no opposition. In some states like Lagos, President Bola Tinubu’s home state, and Borno, Vice-President Kashim Shettima’s state, the party has chosen its governorship candidates through consensus. In states like Ogun and Nasarawa where the outgoing governors have got stakeholders to endorse preferred candidates, primaries are being held by the party in deference to aspirants opposed to the consensus mode of choosing its candidates.

Yet, none of the 31 states governed by the party has the challenge facing Rivers State where the polity has been polarised by a prolonged rift between Fubara and Wike, who has decided, with the subtle support of the APC and President Tinubu, that the governor will not get a second term.

Their prolonged battle entered its crucial and final stage with the ongoing party primaries which began yesterday, Saturday, May 16, 2026, with the conduct of the primaries for the House of Representatives aspirants who would contest the available 13 seats on the platform of the APC. In his first round, Fubara lost to Wike.

As announced the previous day by the state APC Publicity Secretary, Chibike Ikenga, in a statement titled, ‘Final List of Aspirants for the House of Representatives Primary Election for Saturday, 16th May, 2026’, the list of cleared and disqualified aspirants showed that the outcome of the exercise was foretold.
