A notice from the government this evening said the Delhi Police have registered 13 cases in connection with the protests by the evening of July 29.

Now, all the arrests and detentions will be reviewed and there will be no further action against the protesters. The matter will be treated as closed and the release process will be carried out, the notice said.

"We stand with the students, and it is in that spirit that we issued this order," said Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood. "Our government has honoured its commitment to them. However, if any anti-social elements with criminal antecedents used the student protest as an opportunity to spread violence, action will be taken against them," he added.

The arrests were made after the protests escalated on July 20. 

The protesters had clashed with the police during the CJP's 'Chalo Sansad' march from Jantar Mantar. Subsequently, the police had made arrests and filed cases with the help of CCTV footage from the day. 

As outrage spread over the alleged use of excessive force -- including pellet guns -- on protesters, the government accepted the CJP's demands. While Dharmendra Pradhan stepping down as the education minister was the main demand, another key ask was the withdrawal of legal action against the protesters.

Two days after calling off the protests, the CJP said there was no move to drop the police cases and warned that unless the government followed up on its assurances, they will hit the streets again.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered states not to take coercive action against protesters and release those with no prior criminal record.

A bill to amend the anti-paper leaks law, with provisions for stricter punishment of up to 10 years in jail and Rs 10 crore fine has also been passsed in the Lok Sabha.

This time it is a woman police officer standing in front of a bus surrounded by a large number of protesters.

The incident happened in Bhopal when protesting farmers tried to push a bus off the road as they marched towards the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister's residence to press for their demands.

The woman police officer standing in front of the bus is Assistant Commissioner of Police, Traffic and Crime, Monika Shukla.

Called Bhopal's "Lady Singham", Shukla's daring act has earned her widespread applause.

Speaking to NDTV about her now-viral act, Shukla said her duty was to stop farmers from entering the city and that she was only doing her job by stopping them from pushing the bus.

She said police had parked school buses on the road as an additional layer of barricading to stop the farmers' march.

The farmers tried to push the buses and remove the barricade.

"Seeing the bus being pushed forward, I just acted on instinct and stood in front of it as I had to stop the protesters," she said, narrating the incident.

The video of ACP Monika Shukla standing in front of one of the buses trying to stop it has since gone viral.

On seeing the ACP standing in front, the protesting farmers left the bus.

Insisting that her act was "nothing extraordinary", she said that with her long experience in managing law and order, she knows how to deal with any situation.

"I decided on the spot to stand in front of the bus to stop protesters from moving it. I didn't feel scared. Did what I had to," Shukla told NDTV.

Maintaining that protesters are not criminals, Shukla said police need to practice restraint while dealing with any kind of protest.

"We need to work with restraint. Protesters are not criminals. They are also citizens raising their demands," she said.

She, however, added that there is always the possibility of some anti-social elements infiltrating the protesters to create trouble.

"There was no leader of the farm protesters at that point and a large number of people were trying to enter the state capital. My responsibility was to ensure that nothing untoward happened in the city. My only concern was to ensure law and order," she said.

Talking about the recent student protests in Delhi, she said that everyone has right to express their views in a democracy, but "it should be done in a peaceful manner within the ambit of law and without disrupting lives of common people".

Tendulkar remembered the first time when he batted with a talented youngster while playing Ranji Trophy for Mumbai.

"Congratulations on a remarkable career. The first time we batted together for Mumbai, I saw someone who never chased moments. They came to you because you were willing to do the hard yards for the team. That same quality defined your finest hour in Australia," Tendulkar wrote on his micro-blogging platform.

"You showed that composure isn't the opposite of aggression. It is often what gives a team the confidence to be fearless. Congratulations on a wonderful career! Wishing you and your family all the very best," the maestro further added.

Another Test stalwart Cheteshwar Pujara said the senior batter had a career he can be “incredibly proud of”.

The Indian cricket Board said Rahane's call to hang his boots ends an illustrious career.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag hailed Rahane's resilient attitude on the field.

“One of the most underrated cricketers, and the man who led India to its greatest ever overseas Test series win @ajinkyarahane88,” Sehwag wrote referring to India's Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph Down Under in 2020-2021.

Rahane stood in for Virat Kohli and scripted a historic 2-1 series win for India with a heavily depleted side.

India's double-Olympics medal winning shuttler PV Sindhu recalled Rahane's 103 at Lord's on the 2014 tour, which helped his side win the Test against England.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan hailed Rahane's contribution Down Under.

But the task wouldn't be as easy, especially with the likes of Arshad Nadeem, Rumesh Pathirage and Anderson Peters competing with him. While Arshad is the reigning Olympic champion, Neeraj was beaten to the top-podium spot by Pathirage in the Doha Diamond League last month.

In Tests, Rahane played 85 matches and 144 innings, scoring 5,077 runs, including 12 centuries and 26 fifties, at an average of 38.46 and a strike rate of 49.50.

In ODIs, he has featured in 90 matches and 87 innings, scoring 2,962 runs, with 3 centuries and 24 fifties, at an average of 35.26 and a strike rate of 78.63. In T20Is, he has played 20 matches and 20 innings, scoring 375 runs, with no centuries and one fifty, at an average of 20.83 and a strike rate of 113.29.

Rahane had an undefeated Test captaincy record, featuring four wins, two draws, and the highest win percentage for an Indian Test captain with at least five matches.

His tenure included a memorable comeback victory in Melbourne and India's historic triumph at the Gabba, which ended Australia's long unbeaten streak at the venue during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which the Asian Giants won 2-1.

Earlier, Ashwin backed India to field three specialist spinners in the opening Test against Sri Lanka, saying Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar and Kuldeep Yadav should all feature in the playing XI as the visitors prepare for the two-match World Test Championship series beginning in Galle on August 15.

India's squad marks the return of Ravindra Jadeja to the Test set-up after recovering from the tennis elbow injury that had sidelined him since the IPL earlier this year. Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar has retained his place after an impressive outing, while wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav is also available, giving the team management multiple spin options for conditions expected to favour slow bowlers in Sri Lanka.

Ashwin also highlighted the importance of Sai Sudharsan's fitness, believing the young left-hander could play a crucial role if declared fit before the opening Test.

"First, I think India's biggest loss here could be Sai Sudharsan's fitness because he scored two centuries recently in the India 'A' series - one of them was at Galle, which has unique conditions. The wind, how the ball turns, the angles - it takes time to learn all that. But he made a hundred there. If he stays fit, it could be an advantage for India. His confidence will be high. And Sri Lanka always depend on spin - Sai Sudharsan is a good player of spin. So he could be useful. I hope he's fit, and it shouldn't be a setback," Ashwin added.

The 27-year-old Seema made a successful return to competition following motherhood and won gold at the 2025 National Games. She is also pursuing a PhD.

Nidhi opened India's campaign with a throw of 53.19m but was immediately overtaken by Nigeria's Obiageri Pamela Amaechi (53.68m) and Uganda's Monie Nora Atim (55.37m). Seema, meanwhile, began with a foul after sending her discus into the net.

Tunks then moved to the top with an opening effort of 58.21m before Hall seized the lead with 59.27m.

Nidhi responded with a strong second-round throw of 55.67m to climb to third, but Seema soon leapfrogged her compatriot by launching the discus to 57.32m in the second round.

Tunks improved to 60.67m to strengthen her hold on the silver medal position before Seema enhanced her own mark to 58.65m at the halfway stage, putting herself firmly in contention for bronze.

Talking about the tournament, India are drawn in Pool D along with England, Wales and arch-rivals Pakistan. Having won the 1975 edition by beating Pakistan 2-1 in the final, the World Cup glory has eluded India for the last 50 years.

Having registered a ninth-place finish in the 2023 edition held at Bhubaneswar, India will be aiming to bring the gold home, riding on the back of the momentum of two back-to-back Olympic bronze medals, an Asia Cup title win, two Asian Champions Trophy wins and an Asia Cup gold.

India women's side will begin its campaign against China on 16 August, followed by matches against South Africa and England in Pool D.

Ahead of the team's departure, captain Salima Tete expressed confidence in the team's preparations and said, "The entire squad is looking forward to the challenge ahead. We've had a good training block, and now it's about carrying that momentum into the practice matches and then the World Cup. Parashurama, also referred to as Rama Jamadagni, Bhargava Rama, and Virarama, is the sixth avatar among the Dashavatara of the preserver god Vishnu in Hinduism.

Backgound

Ramayana has been made on a staggering budget of Rs 4,000 crore.

Speaking to Prakhar Gupta, producer Namit Malhotra revealed, "When we set out to make this six or seven years ago, people thought I was a lunatic because no Indian film comes close to this scale. Put simply, the budget will be around $500 million for both parts combined, which is over Rs 4,000 crore."

He added, "We're making the largest film in the world for the greatest epic that deserves to be seen globally. And yet, I believe we're doing it more efficiently than some of the biggest Hollywood films. We're not being irresponsible-we're being ambitious, but grounded."

AR Rahman and Oscar-winning Hans Zimmer have collaborated on this project for the first time.

The film is set to be released in two parts, with the first instalment scheduled to release worldwide in October 2026 ahead of Diwali, while the second part is slated for Diwali 2027.

Filmed at the stunning Suryagarh Palace in Jaisalmer earlier this year, The Traitors Season 2 promises shifting alliances, shocking betrayals and plenty of mind games. 

The comparison, shared by Instagram creator Naveen Yadav, who runs the page flicksandfunnys, suggests the makers have quietly fine-tuned the same scene that first appeared in the teaser released in April. According to him, the differences are small but easy to spot when both visuals are placed side by side.

A Closer Look At One Scene

The creator compared a shot where Ranbir Kapoor's Ram stands against a mountain backdrop with his weapon in hand. While the scene is the same, he believes several visual elements have changed in the trailer.

Explaining the differences, he said, "Kaafi kuch change kiya hai, see this is overexposed and there is a cloud here and the mountain… and in the trailer they have improved the lighting and reduced the glare. Alag se Shri Ram ke upar ek glow daala hua hai. If you see it you will realise that they have improved it from before."

According to him, the brighter lighting is not the only change. The creator further said, "It is also making him [Ranbir] look taller I think, and yaha pe bhi jo dhool-mitti jo udti hain woh kam hai trailer mein. Teaser mein bohot jyaada thi. This is a small change and I am sure there will be a lot of changes jo final release pe honge."

The creator also asked people not to decide the quality of the film's VFX just by watching the trailer. He argued that visual effects continue to be updated even after trailers are released and used Spider-Man: Brand New Day as an example of a film that saw noticeable improvements before its final release.

The trailer for Ramayana, released on Thursday, marks the first proper look at Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Yash as Ravana and Sai Pallavi as Sita. Sunny Deol, who plays Hanuman, does not appear in the trailer. The cast also includes Ravie Dubey, Vivek Oberoi, Saurabh Sachdeva and Rakul Preet Singh.

Ramayana: Part One is scheduled to release worldwide during Diwali 2026, with the second instalment arriving in 2027.

Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja's Love Story

After years of togetherness, Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja got married in a traditional ceremony in May 2018. The two then stepped into a new chapter of life with the birth of their baby boy, Vayu, in August 2022.

Sonam is now gearing up for her much-awaited comeback on the big screen with the upcoming film Battle for Bittora. The film is an adaptation of Anuja Chauhan's 2010 best-selling novel of the same name. Produced under the banner of Anil Kapoor Film and Communication Network, the film depicts the love story between two aspiring politicians whose romance is tested as they contest elections against each other.

“He has not been made the captain. He has only been made the vice-captain. The captain is Ishan Kishan. Besides, Ishan is a wicketkeeper, so he will be actively involved throughout the day. It is not as though Vaibhav will be captaining the team all day. As he grows, he is maturing day by day. Giving him more responsibility will help him mature even further," Pravanjan Mullick, a former Odisha Ranji player, told Cricbuzz.

Mullick also pointed out that Sooryavanshi was already the vice-captain of Bihar in first-class cricket and he even served as Ayush Mhatre's deputy during the U-19 World Cup. The selector also expressed his hope that Sooryanvanshi one day will captain the Indian cricket team.

“He has been doing very well for the country and also had an excellent IPL season with Rajasthan Royals. He is also the vice-captain of Bihar in first-class cricket," Mullick said.

“This is a great opportunity for him to take on the responsibility of being vice-captain in the Duleep Trophy. He wants to do well for the country, and we believe giving young players responsibility is important. Who knows? We are keeping our fingers crossed that one day he could even become India's captain. That is the thought behind giving him the vice-captaincy," Mullick added.

“It was really cold and windy, but the throw was okay, the 79m throw. The goal was to go in the final and give my best in the final, so I'm happy with the throw,” he said after the qualifying round where he finished fifth.

The Indian star explained that the unpredictable wind made it extremely difficult for athletes to judge their approach and release during qualification, with no competitor managing to achieve the automatic qualifying standard.

“Conditions are not best for javelin throwers. Not only cold, but it's really windy. The wind was also not in the front; sometimes it's from the side. It's really hard to process where we have to throw. Sometimes we think, ‘Okay, we'll throw there', but then the wind comes from the other side. And lots of throwers are struggling today. Nobody touched the automatic qualification mark. It was tough conditions, but we are happy that all three Indians are in the final,” Chopra added.

All three Indian javelin throwers advanced to the final, giving the country multiple medal hopes heading into the title-deciding contest.

Looking ahead to the final, Chopra acknowledged the strength of the field, which includes several of the world's best athletes and fellow medallists from the Paris Olympics, saying, “Yeah, it's a crazy field. For an event like Javelin Throw, that will be a really good final. Hope conditions will be okay tomorrow. Everyone looks in good shape. Let's see tomorrow.”

Chopra also praised Sri Lanka's rising talent Rumesh, saying the youngster's emergence reflects the growing standard of javelin throwing across South Asia.

“He's the new kid on the block, the rising star. He throws really well. He's a good friend of mine. This year he has thrown really well. It's good that Javelin is growing in our neighbourhood. It feels good that he did something great for Sri Lanka,” he said.

The Olympic champion believes the sport has undergone a dramatic transformation in the region, with greater awareness, improved coaching resources and wider access to information encouraging more youngsters to take up javelin.

“Javelin is really popular in South Asia now. There are lots of Javelin throwers. There are lots of athletes, and they are training for Javelin. So there is a better chance that so many good athletes will come. Earlier, Javelin as a sport was not that famous. But in the last few years, people support javelin and people know about the sport. So they know there is a future, and they really push themselves.

“We have good facilities now, and we know about javelin. Because when I started, I didn't know how we had to plan for Javelin training and how we had to train. But right now, because of the internet, you can know about Javelin training. So it's really good that people know about Javelin now. That's why people recognise Javelin throw, and they try to give their best,” he added.

Reflecting on the impact of his own success, Chopra said his historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics sparked a surge of interest in the discipline, resulting in a new generation of elite Indian throwers.

“Earlier, there were lots of other really good athletes that provided a boost to other sports. But after my Tokyo Olympics gold, there was an immense boost in Javelin. I'm happy we have really good throwers now. I think we have around 20 80m throwers, so it's really good for India,” Chopra concluded.

Producer Namit Malhotra claimed that Ramayana is a mix of Avatar, Gladiator and The Lord of the Rings. He said the film tells the story of a god who takes birth as a human, lives like an ordinary person, understands human emotions and challenges and finally performs his duty.

According to Malhotra, these emotions and values are universal, which makes the story easy for people from different countries and cultures to connect with, even if they are watching an Indian epic for the first time.

In a conversation with Fandom, producer Namit Malhotra explained, “Ramayana is like Avatar meets Gladiator in the world of Lord of the Rings, like so if you can put that together. Lord Vishnu, who is the protector of all life, he has to come as an avatar to bring balance and restore life back. It's the oldest epic known to man for over 5000 years.”

"So god descends as a human and goes through his life in a human form to really understand how humans feel, ultimately to fulfil their duty. Then it's mounted in the back of this massive spectacle woven into the fabric of the screenplay.”

Ramayana is about ‘sacrifice and revenge'

Director Nitesh Tiwari said Ramayana will focus on the emotions and struggles of its characters. He described it as a story about sacrifice, revenge and people fighting against difficult situations. He also believed that the film will offer high-quality visuals and storytelling. 

Tiwari added that Ramayana is not only made to entertain viewers but will also leave them with something meaningful to think about.

Ramayana release date

Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, Sai Pallavi, Ravie Dubey, Vivek Oberoi, Saurabh Sachdeva and Rakul Preet Singh. The film is scheduled to release during Diwali 2026.
