According to the study, better handling of organic waste could create nearly 26 lakh direct jobs, attract around $24 billion in investments.

India's overflowing garbage dumps may soon become one of the country's biggest economic opportunities.

A new study by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) says India's urban organic waste -- the mountains of kitchen scraps, vegetable waste, flowers, meat leftovers and horticulture waste generated daily -- could unlock a market opportunity worth nearly $51 billion by 2047.

But the report is not just about waste. It is about jobs. Clean air. Energy security. Climate goals. Urban governance. And the future of Indian cities.

According to the study, better handling of organic waste could create nearly 26 lakh direct jobs, attract around $24 billion in investments, and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the next two decades.

The report comes at a time when India's cities are generating waste at a pace faster than many municipalities can handle. And the numbers are staggering.

India currently produces nearly 1.71 lakh tonnes of municipal solid waste every day. About half of it is organic waste. Yet only around 61 per cent of total municipal waste is treated today, says the report.

The rest often ends up in overflowing landfills, illegal dump sites, drains, or gets openly burned -- a massive urban problem.

CEEW notes that open waste burning contributes nearly 10 per cent of PM2.5 pollution in Indian cities. Unmanaged organic waste also releases methane -- a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide over a shorter time frame.

The report estimates that emissions from India's waste sector rose by 226 per cent between 1994 and 2020, making it one of the fastest-growing contributors to national emissions.

And things could worsen rapidly. By 2047, India's urban organic waste alone could touch 208 million tonnes annually.

But CEEW argues that this crisis can still be turned into an economic engine. The study models three possible futures for India's organic waste sector.

Under the "business-as-usual" scenario, India would continue with slow improvements in collection and treatment. Waste-sector emissions could rise to nearly 120 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2047.

But under what the report calls the "accelerated policy scenario", India could fully collect urban organic waste and process 95 per cent of it through composting and biomethanation.

That could flip the emissions story entirely. Instead of becoming a pollution burden, the sector could generate net emissions reductions of nearly 68 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2047.

The most aggressive scenario paints an even bigger picture. If India reaches 100 per cent collection and processing of urban organic waste - with a larger shift towards biomethanation and bio-CNG production - the market opportunity could rise to nearly $62 billion by 2047.

That pathway could also generate emissions offsets of more than 100 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. At the centre of this transition is an idea policymakers increasingly love: turning waste into fuel.

Organic waste can be converted into compost, biogas and biomethane. Once purified and compressed, biomethane becomes bio-CNG - a cleaner transport fuel that can replace fossil fuels.

The report says India's bio-CNG potential remains largely untapped despite growing policy support. Currently, composting accounts for nearly 96 per cent of India's organic waste treatment capacity. Biomethanation contributes just 4 per cent.

CEEW believes that balance needs to change. The think tank argues that biomethanation can improve energy security, reduce methane emissions from landfills, and support India's net-zero ambitions.

The study also positions waste management as clean-air infrastructure -- not merely a sanitation issue. "Waste management is clean-air infrastructure," said Prarthana Borah, Fellow at CEEW. Borah warned that unmanaged waste creates year-round pollution challenges, not just seasonal spikes during winter smog episodes.

The report pushes for hyperlocal waste systems, especially for bulk waste generators such as hotels, restaurants, markets and large housing societies.

Another striking finding is the sheer employment potential hidden inside the waste economy. According to the study, a typical 100-tonne-per-day biomethanation plant requires around 31 workers, including technicians, operators, chemists, logistics staff and unskilled labourers.

A composting plant of similar scale employs around 28 workers. Under the accelerated policy scenario, direct employment in the sector could jump from around 4 lakh jobs today to 26 lakh jobs by 2047.

That could create a massive new green workforce spanning collection, processing, logistics, maintenance, energy generation and fertiliser markets.

The report also highlights an important policy shift already underway. India's Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 -- which came into effect in April this year -- now mandate segregation of waste at source and require wet waste to be processed at the nearest composting or biomethanation facility.

CEEW says India already has a surprisingly large policy ecosystem supporting organic waste management.

The study identifies around 16 ministries and government bodies involved through multiple schemes and programmes, including Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, GOBARdhan, SATAT, the National Bioenergy Programme and the Waste-to-Energy Programme.

But the problem, according to researchers, is coordination and execution.

Cities still struggle with poor waste segregation, unreliable waste data, weak contracts, inconsistent collection systems and limited markets for compost and bio-CNG.

The report says municipalities often reward contractors based on the quantity of waste lifted rather than the quality of segregation or recovery.

That has created a system where mixed waste continues flowing into dump sites. To unlock the sector's full potential, CEEW recommends five major interventions.

Cities must improve source segregation. Waste data must be updated regularly. Contracts should become performance-based rather than cost-based. Workforce training needs expansion. And reliable markets for compost and bio-CNG must be developed.

The study also calls for innovative financing tools such as green bonds, hybrid annuity models and stronger public-private partnerships.

After nearly 10 hours of questioning spread over three days, along with spot verification, forensic mapping and examination of digital records, the CBI arrested Giribala Singh.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioned retired judge Giribala Singh on 20 key issues before arresting her in connection with the Twisha Sharma death case, focusing on allegations ranging from evidence tampering and witness statements to pregnancy-related pressure and injuries found on Twisha's body.

After nearly 10 hours of questioning spread over three days, along with spot verification, forensic mapping and examination of digital records, the CBI arrested Giribala Singh, Twisha Sharma's mother-in-law, in Bhopal on Thursday. Her son, Samarth Singh, who is Twisha's husband, is already in custody.

The arrest came a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled her anticipatory bail and set aside the relief granted by a Bhopal sessions court on May 15. CBI officials reached Giribala Singh's residence at around 10:30 am and questioned her for several hours before formally arresting her at approximately 5:10 pm.

According to details accessed by NDTV, investigators questioned Giribala Singh on several aspects of the case, including Twisha Sharma's pregnancy and injuries allegedly found on Twisha's body.

Investigators asked whether she or other family members had discussed terminating the pregnancy and whether Twisha had expressed fear, emotional distress or mental pressure because of the family environment.

The probe agency questioned Giribala Singh about allegations raised by Twisha's family regarding six ante-mortem injuries, including marks on her arm, finger and head.

Here are the 20 questions asked by CBI:

Why did you fail to appear despite notices issued by the investigating agency (SIT)?

Did you deliberately avoid questioning by the SIT and later the CBI?

Did you hide any documents, chats, call records or other evidence linked to the case?

Can you explain the contradictions between your statements and the digital evidence collected so far?

The High Court observed that anticipatory bail was granted mechanically on the same day the FIR was filed. What is your response to the court's observation?

What explanation do you have regarding the serious allegations levelled against you in the FIR?

Why should investigators believe that your role was limited in the matter despite allegations made by the complainant's family?

The court noted that the trial court did not properly examine the case diary and witness statements. What is your response to the statements recorded by investigators?

Why have multiple witnesses and Twisha Sharma's family members accused you of harassment and cruelty?

Investigators have referred to WhatsApp chats as part of the evidence. What explanation do you have regarding those conversations?

How was your relationship with Twisha Sharma after her marriage?

Did you ever have arguments, confrontations or disputes with Twisha Sharma?

Were you involved in, supporting, or ignoring any form of mental or physical harassment against Twisha?

Statements recorded since May 13 claim that you and your son pressured Twisha Sharma to terminate her pregnancy. Did you ever ask her to do so?

Were there discussions within the family regarding Twisha's pregnancy?

Did Twisha Sharma ever express fear, emotional stress or mental pressure because of the family environment?

Twisha Sharma's family has alleged six ante-mortem injuries on her body, including injuries on her arm, finger and head. How did she sustain these injuries?

Were you present when any of these injuries were caused?

Can you explain why these injuries were not consistent with the post-death handling of the body?

Were any attempts made to tamper with or remove digital evidence connected to the investigation?

Giribala Singh is facing grave charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including: Section 80(2), for dowry death; Section 85, Cruelty to a woman by her husband or relatives; Section 3(5), acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention. Additionally, she has been charged under Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.

Within the BJP, there had been growing support for appointing a Sikh face to lead the state unit.

Kewal Singh Dhillon, a Congress leader who switched to the BJP in 2022, has been named the new chief of the BJP's Punjab unit, becoming the first Jat Sikh to hold the post for the party.

The 76-year-old former MLA from Barnala replaces Sunil Jakhar, whose three-year tenure ends in July.

Like Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Sangrur region in the politically significant Malwa belt of Punjab is also home base of Dhillon.

"Once we form the government in Punjab, we will make it the No. 1 state in all areas. After West Bengal, the lotus will now bloom in Punjab too," Dhillon said after his appointment.

The BJP required a Sikh face who not only hailed from the Malwa region but has a connect with the grassroots. In other words, Dhillon represents a "combo package" for the party, being simultaneously a businessman and an agriculturist.

Within the BJP, there had been growing support for appointing a Sikh face to lead the state unit. Insiders said BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh strongly backed Dhillon's candidature, with RSS Punjab in-charge Mantri Srinivaslu and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini also reportedly supporting the move.

Although Daya Singh Sodhi had previously served as party president in 1997 as a Sikh face, this marks the first instance where the party has entrusted the leadership of Punjab to a Jat Sikh.

Since Punjab's reorganisation in 1966, the state's politics has been heavily dominated by the agrarian Jat Sikh leadership, particularly across the politically crucial Malwa region. Only two of the state's 13 chief ministers have come from outside this dominant fold: Giani Zail Singh, an OBC leader from the Ramgarhia community (1972-1977), and Charanjit Singh Channi, a Dalit Sikh who remained in office for just 111 days (2021-2022).

The Malwa belt - stretching from Patiala and Ludhiana to Bathinda and Ferozepur - accounts for 69 of Punjab's 117 Assembly seats, making it the state's biggest political battleground. For the BJP, making inroads into Malwa is essential if it hopes to emerge as a serious contender in Punjab politics.

Dhillon's Probable Competitors For The Top Post

Former state party chief and MLA Ashwani Sharma, recognised as the party's prominent Hindu face in Punjab, was a top contender. For a considerable period, the state unit had been led by Hindu figures; however, ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the party was actively seeking a Jat Sikh face.

Union Minister Ravneet Bittu, another Jat Sikh from the Malwa region, was also in the running. However, sources indicate that Bittu's style of public outreach did not entirely align with the party's organisational requirements for the state chief role. Furthermore, as the BJP wishes to maintain a strong Sikh presence at the Centre, the leadership likely intends to keep Bittu in his current role as a Union Minister.

Former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh is also a prominent Jat Sikh face, but sources say his advanced age makes him less capable of playing an intensive, active organisational role at this juncture.

Manpreet Singh Badal, another leader hailing from Malwa, was also in the race, though the party reportedly intends to entrust him with a different responsibility in the future. Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi was also considered, but the party remained keen on projecting a Sikh face directly associated with the home stronghold of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Calm and reassured when it comes to internal elections and global ties, what probably keeps Russian President Vladimir Putin up at night is his attempt to defy one of the harshest mortality rates reported in his country and a $26 billion longevity initiative at the centre of it.

The program, a state priority, is looking at methods as radical as bio-printing and xenotransplantation, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. One entails the use of 3D-printed living tissue, while the other comprises growing human organs inside mini pigs.

This puts Putin among a league of world figures who have trained their focus on longevity and anti-ageing, shoulder to shoulder with Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman and Bryan Johnson. The initiative, which encompasses a gene therapy treatment in the works, was launched in 2024 and is pipped to save 1,75,000 lives by 2020, per the Wall Street Journal report.

Achievements so far include bioprinted human cartilage tissue and a mouse thyroid gland, and the long-term goal is human organ replacement by the end of the decade.

Who Is Heading The Project?

Helming the initiative is Putin' daughter and endocrinologist Maria Vorontsova and physicist Mikhail Kovalchuk. The latter, as per the report, believes that science will eventually figure out a way to repair and even replace human body parts. "It is difficult to discuss immortality, but the ability to repair man will undoubtedly increase," Kovalchuk had told Russian media.

In a 2015 speech, Kovalchuk had also suggested the US was behind the Covid pandemic and said it was moving towards creating "servant humans". He had also praised the 1968 movie Dead Season, wherein the CIA was shown to conspire with Nazi doctors to control humanity.

Questionable Goals

Alexander Ostrovskiy, a Russian scientist known for pioneering bioprinting research in the country, flagged the lack of peer-reviewed research in major international journals to validate their initiative. This makes their statements "aspirations" at best, he told Wall Street Journal. The scientist, who left Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, said the scientists involved are probably telling Putin what he wants to hear to secure funding.

Putin's Less Credible Attempts To Reverse Ageing

Seen shirtless on horseback, playing ice hockey, exercising in the gym and skin appearing smoother as he ages, 73-year-old Putin's obsession with reversing bodily decline and preserving internal and external health was seen during the Covid pandemic. Disinfection tunnels and lengthy isolation was made mandatory for those who wanted to meet him.

Among his obsessions is cryotherapy, according to the Wall Street Journal report, the benefits of which he had explained to Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz in 2018. In the reverse sauna, the body is exposed to temperatures as low as minus 170 degrees Fahrenheit.

In fact, it was Putin's recent hot mic moment with his Chinese counterpart that shows the longevity initiative still remains top priority for him. He was heard telling Xi jinping that humans could achieve immortality by replacing organs.

Ambition Or Paranoia?

Having remained the Russian President for the longest time, Putin's shot at a prolonged life mirrors attempts by various figures from the country. Polymath Alexander Bogdanov and physician Oleksandr Bogomolets have been recognised for their work in the longevity arena. Interesting to note is that Putin and his closest aides are all in their 70s - Kovalchuk, Yuri Ushakov, Sergei Chemezov and Nikolai Patrushev among them. Would the future of a leadership vaccum be a factor in prolonging his age?

Another likely reason can be to better Russia's mortality rates. While the US and western Europe have an average male life expectancy of 76 and 80 years, Russia's stands at 68.

The arrest of retired judge Giribala Singh by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has transformed the mysterious death of actor-model Twisha Sharma from a suspected dowry death investigation into what investigators now believe may also be a case involving alleged destruction of evidence, digital manipulation, and a possible attempt to conceal what really happened inside a prominent Bhopal household on the night of May 12.

After nearly ten hours of questioning spread over three days, spot verification, forensic mapping and scrutiny of digital records, the CBI arrested Giribala Singh, mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma, on allegations of evidence tampering. Investigators are now expected to confront the mother and son face-to-face as they attempt to reconstruct the final hours before Twisha's death.

But behind the forensic scans, CCTV footage and digital timelines lies a disturbing story of alleged dowry harassment, suspicion, financial disputes and family tensions that investigators are now examining in detail.

According to material submitted before the court by Twisha's family, the trouble allegedly began soon after her marriage. Family members have alleged that the gifts and dowry brought during the marriage were repeatedly described as being "below their standard." Investigators are also examining allegations that Twisha was taunted after returning from a trip to Vietnam and that tensions escalated when it emerged that she held shares in various companies.

Sources associated with the investigation indicate that Twisha owned shares valued at nearly Rs 20 lakh. Her family has alleged that both Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh wanted those shares transferred into their names. Investigators are now examining whether disputes over those financial assets formed part of the broader pattern of conflict inside the household.

The allegations become even more serious when viewed alongside claims regarding Twisha's pregnancy. According to submissions made by her family, she was allegedly pressured to terminate her pregnancy after questions were raised about the paternity of the child. Family members claim she was told she would only be accepted in the household if the pregnancy was terminated. Investigators are examining whether these allegations can be corroborated through medical records, messages and witness statements.

The CBI is also reviewing months of communication between Twisha and her parents. According to her family, Twisha repeatedly informed them about harassment, physical altercations and dowry-related pressure at her marital home. On April 19, during a visit to Rajasthan, she allegedly told her family that both Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh continued to question her character and subject her to humiliation.

Now investigators are attempting to determine whether those allegations provide critical context to what happened on May 12, the day Twisha was found hanging.

Also Read | Twisha Sharma Case Spotlights How Mental Health Becomes Weapon In Divorces

The agency's focus extends far beyond conventional questioning. Sources indicate that the CBI has adopted what investigators describe as a "Tunnel View Investigation" approach. Every movement inside the three-storey Katara Hills residence is being digitally recreated. CCTV footage, mobile phone records, Wi-Fi logs, internet activity, call detail records, forensic mapping and room-by-room reconstruction are being merged into a virtual timeline.

Investigators are effectively building a digital avatar of Twisha's final hours.

The objective is to answer questions that have haunted the investigation from the beginning - Where exactly was Twisha during her final moments? Who entered and exited various rooms? Which phones were active? What internet activity occurred? Who was communicating with whom? And most importantly, does the digital evidence support the version of events provided by family members?

The critical focus remains a narrow but crucial 40-minute period from the time Twisha allegedly went to the terrace gym area until she was transported to hospital.

Investigators are examining why only selected CCTV clips surfaced publicly. Why was footage showing Twisha entering the gym area and being brought downstairs circulated while other potentially crucial portions remain absent? Was evidence selectively preserved, or were important records altered?

Another key question concerns what happened immediately after her death.

If Twisha was found hanging on the terrace, who decided to bring her body downstairs? Why was CPR administered before authorities were informed? Was the movement of the body justified as an emergency response, or did it alter a potential crime scene? Investigators are examining whether these actions affected the integrity of evidence.

The CBI is also scrutinising alleged inconsistencies in official records. One issue under examination is the recording of Twisha's height in police documentation. Investigators are attempting to determine whether this was a clerical error, investigative negligence, or part of a broader effort to influence the narrative surrounding her death.

Call detail records, tower locations and digital footprints have become central to the investigation. The agency is mapping every communication made before and after the incident, including identifying whom Twisha contacted during her final hours and whether any communication patterns changed immediately after her death.

The investigation is also expected to expand beyond the immediate family. Domestic staff, associates, individuals who visited the residence after the incident, and others connected to the family may now be questioned.

For the CBI, the arrest of Giribala Singh is not being viewed as the end of an inquiry but potentially the beginning of a deeper phase. Investigators are no longer looking solely at how Twisha died. They are also trying to establish whether the truth about her death was subsequently altered, concealed or manipulated.

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya seems to be on his way out of the franchise after a horrendous Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Reports have started to emerge that the franchise's management is looking to appoint a new captain ahead of the 2027 season, while NDTV has learned that Hardik himself is keen to leave the Mumbai Indians in search of a new challenge. Amid the chatter around Hardik's future, former India batter Subramaniam Badrinath has suggested a trade deal between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings involving Hardik. (GT vs RR, IPL 2026 Qualifier 2 Live Updates)

Badrinath, who played for CSK in the IPL, feels MI should look to get the likes of Shivam Dube and Ayush Mhatre in exchange for Hardik before the IPL 2027 season.

"If I am MI, I would trade Hardik for Shivam Dube and Ayush Mhatre from CSK. A core trio of Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Hardik Pandya will take the CSK brand to a different level. There is also no set rule that Samson has to be made the CSK captain. If Hardik demands captaincy, I would make him CSK's captain because of his excellent relationship with MS Dhoni," Badrinath said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Hardik's return to the Mumbai Indians came with a lot of scrutiny. He replaced Rohit Sharma before the 2024 season, leaving fans infuriated. The transfer has also hurt Hardik's image, with fans often portraying him as a 'rival'-someone whose return to MI led to Rohit's demotion.

Badrinath, hence, feels a switch to Chennai could be the best decision for Hardik as the franchise could also help him repair his image to a large extent.

"Hardik has at least three excellent seasons in him. He will lend CSK incredible balance to the point where they can build the team around him. It'll also help Hardik if he goes to CSK over any other franchise, as CSK can enhance your image to a different level," he added.

The production house has further demanded an additional Rs 100 crore as damages if Tips Industries Limited and David Dhawan fail to comply with these demands and continue exploiting the disputed...

The dispute over the alleged "unauthorised" use of Chunnari Chunnari — the 90s blockbuster song from Biwi No.1, which featured Salman Khan and Sushmita Sen — in David Dhawan's new directorial Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, starring his son Varun Dhawan, escalated after Vashu Bhagnani (producer of Biwi No. 1) filed a Rs 400 crore suit in the Bombay High Court against Tips Industries Limited, Ramesh Taurani, Kumar S Taurani and filmmaker David Dhawan, intensifying tensions and controversies ahead of the film's release.

Producer Vashu Bhagnani, head of Puja Films, has repeatedly said his concern is 'ethical' rather than financial, claiming he was not consulted before the songs were used in the new film.

As an advocate of protecting intellectual property rights, Bhagnani said he's fighting for other producers in similar situations. "My fight is for the public. It is about justice and ethics," he said.

Meanwhile, David Dhawan's Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons since the trailer released.

The film's title has been taken from the song of the same name from Biwi No 1, featuring Salman Khan, Sushmita Sen. While the video of Chunnari Chunnari has been unveiled, the video of the song Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is yet to be released.

The initial trailer release date (May 21) was changed; mudslinging between Tips producer Ramesh Taurani and Vashu Bhagnani has continued to dominate headlines.

Last but not least, the Internet was not even in favour of the new version of the song that Salman Khan and Sushmita once popularised in a pre‑Instagram era.

Before the court spells its verdict, let's look back at the fiasco that's even louder than the original banger.

Trailer Launch Pushed Back

The trailer launch of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai was scheduled for May 21. The event was cancelled at the eleventh hour, with the makers citing a "technical glitch" for the postponement.

The postponement allegedly occurred after Vashu Bhagnani had filed a suit against David Dhawan, Ramesh Taurani and other related parties seeking to prevent the alleged unauthorised use of his songs and videos in the new film.

Speaking to NDTV, VK Dubey, legal counsel for Puja Entertainment, questioned the "technical glitch" explanation.

"Calling it a mere 'technical glitch' is nothing but an attempt to divert attention from the real issue. The truth is that a subsisting status quo order is already operating in the matter, and once such an order is in force, the parties cannot proceed with the release of the trailer or the film in violation of judicial directions. The sudden cancellation of the trailer launch clearly speaks for itself," he said.

Dubey further alleged that criminal proceedings against David Dhawan and Tips are also underway in the matter.

"What is even more significant is that serious criminal proceedings — FIRs involving allegations of cheating, criminal breach of trust, forgery, copyright infringement and conspiracy — have already been initiated against David Dhawan and the Taurani brothers.

"The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Udakishunganj, Madhepura, has taken cognisance of the matter and issued investigation notices to director David Dhawan, Ramesh Taurani, Kumar Taurani and Girish Taurani of Tips Industries Ltd. These are not casual allegations but serious ones, and proceedings are presently under judicial investigation," Dubey told NDTV.

'There's No Problem': Ramesh Taurani

On May 23, the trailer of the film was unveiled in Mumbai in the presence of the cast and producer.

Speaking at the trailer launch, producer Ramesh Taurani addressed concerns after being served a legal notice.

"There is no problem in this. Whatever we had has been sorted," Taurani said, adding that no promotional activities or the film's release would be halted.

He added, "And whatever comes next will also be sorted. So, there is no problem. And it's a sub judice matter. So, we are handling it."

Vashu Bhagnani's Allegations

The producer linked the dispute to his long-standing professional relationship with director David Dhawan.

After Coolie No. 1 (2020), produced by Puja Entertainment and directed by Dhawan, the two sides had reportedly discussed future collaborations involving Varun Dhawan and Rohit Dhawan.

However, Bhagnani claimed plans changed when David Dhawan and producer Ramesh Taurani began work on Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.

Speaking during a virtual press conference, Bhagnani said, "Three months later, I learned that Ramesh Taurani and David Dhawan had joined hands to make a film. I felt a little bad, but then I realised that I can't stop them. One year later, I saw 'Chunnari Chunnari' was a part of that film. I called David Dhawan and asked them, 'How can you do this?'"

He further alleged, "We sold the audio rights of Biwi No. 1 to Tips at the time of release. Wog log badmaashi karke video chala rahe the. They were not even ready to meet us over this issue. We shared a letter in court, due to which the court granted us status quo."

Bhagnani also questioned the ethics behind the move. "How can David Dhawan use the same songs from our film in his son's movie, that too for a Ramesh Taurani production? There should be some ethics in the industry."

He added that a simple phone call could have avoided the dispute altogether: "At least he should have called and told me, 'Vashu ji, main same gaana mere bete ke liye kar raha hoon. I hope you don't have an objection. Please support.' I would have given the NOC and would not have minded."

Bhagnani's Status Quo And The Controversy

After filing the first suit, Bhagnani obtained interim protection for Puja Entertainment in its legal dispute against Tips Music over the alleged unauthorised use of Bollywood intellectual property.

According to statements issued through his lawyer, VK Dubey, the court's "status quo" order applies to all music rights, songs and films mentioned in the suit.

"I believe they have not gone through the court order carefully. The order clearly states that the entire music rights, songs and films mentioned in the plaintiff's suit are covered under the 'status quo' order," Dubey stated.

Tips Retorts

In a statement shared on Instagram two days after the trailer launch, Tips addressed the allegations made by Puja Entertainment.

"We wish to inform the public at large regarding the allegations made by Puja Entertainment (India) Limited ("PEIL") against Tips Music Limited ("Tips") concerning the alleged infringement of copyright and the use of the songs 'Chunnari Chunnari' and 'Ishq Sona Hai' in the forthcoming film 'Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.'"

The company further asserted, "Tips categorically maintains that it is the absolute and lawful owner of the relevant copyrights and associated rights in the said works. PEIL's allegations are disputed. Tips clarifies that it has taken all necessary and appropriate steps in accordance with law, including obtaining relief from the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India vide its order dated 22 May 2026."

The statement concluded, "Tips remains committed to protecting its rights and is actively pursuing all appropriate legal remedies in consultation with its legal advisors and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations."

Reacting to Tips' statement, Puja Entertainment's counsel told NDTV, "We have just come to know about the order passed by the Hon'ble Supreme Court. The said order was obtained without serving us or informing us about the proceedings. Therefore, we are in the process of filing an application to vacate the said order, as it was obtained without our knowledge and without placing the complete facts and merits of the matter before the Honourable Court."

Rs 400 Crore Lawsuit, Rs 100 Crore Compensation

On Thursday, Vashu Bhagnani filed another suit seeking urgent and sweeping injunctive relief restraining the release, distribution, exhibition, streaming and further commercial exploitation of the film and its promotional material containing the disputed songs, including Chunnari Chunnari and Ishq Sona Hai.

Speaking to ANI, Advocate Dubey said, "We have filed a suit with a claim of Rs. 400 crores against Tips Music Company. The legal battle has been increasing for many days, and the rights of the musicians were not ready to be settled."

He further explained, "Earlier, the rights to movies were based on agreements. Today, music companies buy the songs from the big producers or the lyricists who make the songs or create the songs. At that time, the agreements with Tips allowed only audio rights. In 2018, Tips had emailed us and asked for visual rights. Vashu Bhagnani had replied to them, but their conversation did not settle."

According to a press release, Puja Entertainment has also sought directions for the removal of the songs Chunnari Chunnari and Ishq Sona Hai from the film and its promotional material, along with a demand to change the title Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.

The production house has further demanded an additional Rs 100 crore as damages if Tips Industries Limited and David Dhawan fail to comply with these demands and continue exploiting the disputed works.

Puja Entertainment (India) Ltd has alleged that the defendants have unlawfully exploited valuable intellectual property rights despite allegedly having no authority, assignment or licence to commercially use the original audiovisual works.

About Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai

The film marks the fourth collaboration between David Dhawan and Varun Dhawan. Headlined by Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde, the film revolves around a chaotic love triangle and a comedy of errors. The ensemble cast also features Rakesh Bedi, Chunky Panday, Jimmy Shergill, Mouni Roy, Rajesh Kumar and Ali Asgar in pivotal roles.

On how DK Shivakumar spent the last three years as Siddaramaiah's deputy, his astrologer Bellur Dwarakanath said the Congress leader is not someone who gives up easily

DK Shivakumar had lost hopes of ever becoming chief minister many times and had gone into depression due to that, but he prevailed with guidance, the Congress leader's longtime astrologer Bellur Dwarakanath told NDTV's Shiv Aroor today.

After Siddaramaiah resigned as Karnataka chief minister, Shivakumar is widely expected to be elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the next couple of days, which will pave the way for him to become chief minister.

On how Shivakumar spent the last three years as Siddaramiah's deputy, Dwarakanath said the Congress leader is not someone who gives up easily.

"He is a person who fights to the end. That is his quality. But let me tell you, many times he has cried, many times he went into depression, almost lost hope. But I always gave him courage, that he should not lose heart, that he would sit as chief minister, that he would come back. That's exactly what happened," the astrologer said.

As it became clearer Shivakumar would indeed become the chief minister, his astrologer said he advised the leader to take the responsibility, but cautiously.

"I told him, accept the chief ministership, but it is also a path that is full of thorns. You have to put your head down and work strongly," Dwarakanath said.

The astrologer said he also told Shivakumar that opponents will send discouraging messages like he is not fit for the role. One piece of the advice is about working only for the state and no one else.

"He must forget everybody. He should not entertain any people, whoever they are. He must be away from them and work for the state. Then only he can become successful," Dwarakanath said.

He said he had high hopes that the Congress party would bless Shivakumar and send him to the chief minister's post.

"People have to work very hard and earn their success... I do hope the day he sits [on the chief minister's chair], there will be good rain, good atmosphere, and he will behave like a sanyasi, leave everything, sacrifice everything for Karnataka and give a good, corruption-free, growing state. And no quarrels either in Tamil Nadu or Andhra Pradesh. That's what I want," Dwarakanath said.

Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar are in Delhi to meet the Congress high command and discuss the transition of power, and formation of the new cabinet. Shivakumar has only good wishes and praise for the outgoing chief minister.

"As he steps down from the office of the Chief Minister, I express my heartfelt gratitude and deep respect for his years of service and leadership to the people of Karnataka," Shivakumar said, adding that welfare schemes and developmental initiatives started by Siddaramaiah will remain significant chapters in Karnataka's growth story.

Rishabh Pant stepped down as Lucknow Super Giants captain after the franchise finished last in IPL 2026. The IPL team confirmed on social media that Pant's request to give up the leadership role was accepted by the team management. LSG had a horrible run of form in IPL 2026 as they won just 4 matches and finished last with 8 points from 14 matches. Pant's performance as a batter was also not that impressive as he scored 312 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 138.05. (GT vs RR, IPL 2026 Qualifier 2 Live Updates)

“Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) wish to formally announce that Rishabh Pant has requested to be relieved of his captaincy duties with the franchise, and the franchisee has accepted his request with immediate effect,” LSG said in a statement on Friday.

LSG Director of Cricket, Tom Moody, described Pant stepping down as 'never easy'.

“Rishabh approached the franchise with this request and we have respectfully accepted it. These decisions are never easy," Moody said in a statement released by LSG. “We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective — rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards,” he added.

LSG did not make any announcement regarding who will become the next captain after Pant.

"With an eye on making a positive comeback in the upcoming season, the new Lucknow Super Giants captain will be announced in due course." the official statement from the franchise read.

Under Pant's captaincy, LSG have won 10 matches but suffered 18 defeats across two seasons. With bat, the wicket-keeper batter, once considered one of the most explosive players in the country, could score just 581 runs at a strike rate of 135.74.

Rishabh Pant stepped down as the Lucknow Super Giants skipper following a disappointing run in IPL 2026.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday confirmed that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has stepped down from captaincy duties with immediate effect, and the same has been accepted by the franchise after the side had a tenth‑place finish in IPL 2026. After leaving Delhi Capitals, a side he led before in the IPL, Pant took over as LSG's skipper after the franchise roped him in for a record-breaking Rs 27 crore in the mega auction held in 2024. But under him, LSG endured back‑to‑back disappointing campaigns - the side finished seventh last season and slipped further this year by ending at the bottom spot of the points table with just four wins from 14 games. (GT vs RR, IPL 2026 Qualifier 2 Live Updates)

“Rishabh approached the franchise with this request and we have respectfully accepted it. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective - rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards,” said Tom Moody, the side's global director of cricket, in a statement on Friday.

Under his captaincy, LSG managed ten wins but suffered 18 defeats across two seasons. With the bat, Pant, once amongst the most explosive performers in the league, struggled to replicate that form for LSG. Across two years, he scored 581 runs at a strike rate of 135.74, numbers way below his career benchmarks.

Rishabh Pant's 'priority'

A franchise official told IANS on Friday that Pant's decision to relinquish captaincy just six days after the side's campaign got over isn't a huge surprise, considering that he expressed this desire to leave the top role after the season got over for LSG on a disappointing note.

“Rishabh was very clear about leaving as LSG's captain right after the tournament ended. From his perspective, the vision he had for the team as the captain, it just wasn't translating into reality. Also, it was becoming too much for him to balance things as captain while his primary skillsets, especially his batting form, wasn't at its best.

“It's also understood that Rishabh told the LSG coaching staff and management that it would be selfish of him to continue as captain after yet another disappointing season. Plus, he wants to prioritise his batting in the longer run, considering he is not an automatic pick in the Indian side in white-ball formats,” said the official.

Pant himself admitted during the season that ‘too many minds' in the leadership group had complicated matters for him as a leader. Pant's future as the LSG skipper was under doubts when Moody had said after losing their final league game to Punjab Kings that the franchise will consider a leadership reset

“One key thing to note is that Rishabh has high standards, and if he doesn't touch them, either as a batter, keeper or captain, he will quickly realise it before anyone tells him. Moreover, Rishabh was clear that he did not wish to wait until the trading window opened or retention discussions for the next season commenced to speak to coaches and management on his future as LSG captain.

“There was also this feeling within Rishabh that he let down LSG fans too as a leader, and that weighed heavily on him as well. So, ultimately, it was a mixed bag of factors behind him leaving the captaincy and subsequently, the franchise also accepted his desire to let go of the leadership armband and allow Rishabh to concentrate on his batting,” added the official.

(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)

The White House has launched a website which at first seems to contain declassified information, but as readers scroll down through the page, it becomes apparent that the "aliens" are not coming from outer space; it is about foreign nationals who have entered the United States illegally.

US, Iran Agree On Deal Framework, Awaiting Trump Approval: Report

The United States and Iran have agreed on a framework deal for a 60-day ceasefire extension, but the memorandum of understanding still needs US President Donald Trump's approval.

Sources told news agency AFP that the two nations had reached an agreement on extending the ceasefire and to launch negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme.

According to an Axios report, Iran has also not agreed to the deal yet. The report mentioned that the framework of the deal has been worked on and "mostly agreed" to as of Tuesday, but the senior leadership of both parties still needs to give their approval.

Although Trump has been briefed on the details about the deal, he did not sign off on it immediately and said that he "wants a couple of days to think about it", Axios reported quoting a US official.

Nuclear Weapon, Uranium, Hormuz, Iran Oil: What's In The Deal

The 60-day memorandum of understanding will include the free flow of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. That means the Islamic Republic would not be able to levy tolls from ships passing the strategic chokepoint. A US official told the publication that there would be "no harassment" in the strait and that Iran would also be required to remove all mines from the waterway within 30 days.

As for the US naval blockade, the US official said that it will be lifted in proportion to the level of commercial shipping restored through the Strait of Hormuz.

Another important point in the framework deal would be sanctions, and the US is ready to issue some sanctions waiver so that Iran can sell oil freely.

The report states that the deal will include Iran's commitment to not pursue a nuclear weapon. During the 60-day ceasefire period, the two sides will negotiate how Iran's highly enriched uranium will be disposed of and the course of action around Iranian enrichment.

Frozen Iranian funds and sanctions are two areas which the US will commit to discussing during the negotiations.

"The more the Iranians are willing to give the more they will get," a US official said.

The development came after Washington and Tehran accused each other of violating an ongoing truce following an exchange of fire, three months after the conflict began with US-Israeli strikes on the Islamic republic.

The provisional agreement is significant as it arrived just days after the most serious trading of fire since the ceasefire started in April, rattling ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war.

The case dates back to 2010, when a woman, within three years of her marriage, was found hanging at her marital home.

The harassment has to stop, was the message from the Supreme Court on Friday, during a hearing in the death of a woman by hanging at her matrimonial home in Chhattisgarh.

The sharp comments also come at a time the Twisha Sharma case is making headlines. The 33-year-old was found dead at her marital home in Bhopal on May 12, barely five months after her marriage. Her parents have alleged mental torture and harassment by Twisha's in-laws.

A Bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan refused to interfere with the conviction of the husband's younger brother under Section 498A of the IPC for cruelty and harassment in the Chhattisgarh case.

The court also questioned the poor treatment of brides and their families after marriage.

"Why do boys marry girls and then insult them and their families? Let a message go out that they cannot continue insulting the bride and her family," the court said.

The case dates back to 2010, when a woman, within three years of her marriage, was found hanging at her marital home. According to victim's lawyer, she was repeatedly harassed by her husband and his family over dowry demands, including money and a car.

The trial court held that the continued dowry demands and harassment were closely linked to her death.

Several members of the husband's family were convicted under Sections 304B (dowry death), 306 (abetment of suicide) and 498A (cruelty and harassment) of the IPC.

The Chhattisgarh High Court later upheld the conviction.

In the Supreme Court, the petitioner argued that he was only accused under Section 498A and should be given relief.

"You should be happy that it is only 498A and only three years," Justice Nagarathna shot back.

The judge also spotlighted the pattern of financial coercion in matrimonial homes.

"Attempt is to squeeze the bride and her family," Justice Nagarathna said.

Referring to the allegations on record, the judge added,"What exactly did the boy's family say? You people are beggars; you cannot pay. The girl's family was pleading to save their daughter and they were being called beggars."

When the lawyer for the accused attempted to respond, the judge interjected.

"You should have kept quiet. Bride's father said they can give Rs 60,000 and you call them beggars?"

The petitioner's lawyer also pointed to a delay in lodging the FIR but the top court did not find merit in the argument.

"Let the message go. This is how brides are treated," the court said.

Underlining the troubling normalisation of such conduct even among the privileged, Justice Bhuyan remarked,"These are educated people."

The court upheld the findings of the trial court and dismissed the appeal.

Sivakumar was asked his opinion about Vijay as Chief Minister and how he saw his massive victory in the polls.

Now that Tamil star Vijay has become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, many of his colleagues from the Tamil film industry are being asked about his success in his debut electoral foray. At a recent event at a hospital in Coimbatore, veteran actor Sivakumar, Suriya and Karthi's father, was with Sathyaraj talking to the media.

Sivakumar was asked his opinion about Vijay as Chief Minister and how he saw his massive victory in the polls. The 84-year-old acting legend replied, "Looking back at our political history, Kamaraj was in prison for nine years and then he became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for nine years. He was voted out of power. When he died, he had only Rs 140 underneath his pillow, five or six books, two pairs of slippers and some four of five kurtas. That was all he owned. Can you see such a leader today? But he was still defeated. Then the Dravidian parties came and ruled the state for nearly 60 years. Today, people didn't want DMK or AIADMK and they have voted for Vijay. People decide who they want in power. 90 per cent of those who voted are youngsters and they have voted without taking money. My own grandson (Suriya's son) voted. They are the future. People wanted change. Who are we to say that it is wrong when they can choose their leader? Let's hope that Vijay will do good. I am happy he has won."

Interestingly, actor Sathyaraj, who was with Sivakumar, is a staunch DMK supporter and had also put out a video recently about this after the party's defeat in the recent Tamil Nadu elections.

He said in the video, "I've been a supporter of the Dravidian model government and Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin for the last five years. I proudly, confidently, happily and joyfully declare that my support for Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin and the Dravidian Munnetra Kazhagam will be even stronger in the coming times as well."
I'm deeply grateful to producer Subaskaran of Lyca Productions for placing their trust in my vision and for constantly supporting me throughout this process. Working with such a committed cast and crew has been truly rewarding, and I sincerely thank every artist and technician who contributed wholeheartedly to this film. We are eagerly looking forward to presenting Sigma to audiences on July 31 and can't wait to share more exciting updates soon."

According to GKM Tamil Kumaran of Lyca Productions, the movie has shaped up well. He was all praise for Vijay's son Jason Sanjay and said, "Jason Sanjay has approached his debut with remarkable clarity, dedication, and conviction."

The movie was shot in 65 days over a period of four months. The cast of the film also includes Faria Abdullah, Raju Sundaram, Sampath Raj, Shiv Pandit, Anbu Thasan, Yog Japee, and others. Sigma has music composed by Thaman S, cinematography by Krishnan Vasant, editing by Praveen KL, and Hariharasuthan on VFX supervision.
Hardik Pandya is all set to quit Mumbai Indians after losing the "mental bandwidth" to carry on, following the franchise's dismal IPL 2026 season.

"Mentally stressed and completely exhausted" after what has been a disastrous IPL, Mumbai Indians' under-fire captain Hardik Pandya is set to quit the franchise and had conveyed this to the team management mid-season, a top tournament source told PTI on Friday. The 32-year-old Pandya, who took over the leadership in 2024 replacing Rohit Sharma, informed the Mumbai Indians management about leaving the franchise weeks before the team's disastrous IPL campaign ended. Once the play-off hopes were dashed with quite a few games still left, it is learnt that both Pandya and MI reached an understanding on mutually parting ways.

"Hardik was mentally stressed and completely exhausted. He had also sustained a back injury. In fact, once the play-off hopes were dashed, Hardik informed the decision-makers that he wouldn't be staying back," an IPL source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"Please understand that Hardik is only 32. He returned to MI in 2024 when he was 30. He was booed in the first year and this season too things didn't go according to plan," the source added referring to the change of guard in which the hugely popular Rohit was replaced as captain.

MI fans had repeatedly booed Pandya during the games in the past two seasons and the all-rounder, despite seeming visibly affected by the heckling, maintained that "it has been a difficult but entertaining journey".

The IPL source said, his patience has finally run out.

"There is only so much that a young man can take. The last three years haven't been easy for him. The MI dressing room that he had left in 2021 wasn't the same when he returned in 2024. Not every senior player was on the same page.

"If results come despite divergent views, you still won't feel frustrated. But when everyone pulls in different directions, after a point you don't have the mental bandwidth to carry on. So, Hardik had decided mid-season that he wouldn't be part of MI next season," the source further said.

According to people privy to the developments, what hurt Pandya immensely was the fact that senior players, who demanded 100 per cent commitment when he played T20Is for India, were not exactly returning the favour when he was in-charge of the franchise.

It is, however, not clear whether Pandya is looking at a trade deal with another team or would prefer to enter the auction pool.

"One thing is for sure. He is done with MI. Closer to August, one might get some indication about what his next move will be." For someone who feels mentally drained, Chennai Super Kings wouldn't be a bad option in case of a trade.

(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)

Hardik Pandya is looking to leave Mumbai Indians after relationship breakdown with the management, sources have told NDTV. The next MI captain would be picked by Rohit Sharma's 'blessings'.

An unprecedented crisis has emerged at Mumbai Indians, with Hardik Pandya set to be sacked as the team's captain. In fact, sources close to the developments told NDTV that the all-rounder is even looking to leave the franchise over a relationship breakdown with the management. MI, who only secured 4 wins in 14 matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign, look to have decided to move on from Hardik, the man they appointed as skipper ahead of the 2024 season. But, who is going to take over the reigns from him?

Sources close to the development have told NDTV that Mumbai Indians' next captain would be the one who will have Rohit Sharma's blessings. The management have learned their lesson from the poor decision of replacing Rohit with Hardik in 2023. The bosses are keen to avoid a similar situation with their next captaincy pick. Hence, Rohit, the biggest name in the Mumbai Indians team, is set to play an instrumental role in picking the next skipper.

But, it is already confirmed that there will be no U-turn for Rohit when it comes to the Mumbai Indians captaincy.

"The next Mumbai Indians captain will be the one who has the blessings of Rohit Sharma. Mumbai realise the mistake they have made. But it will not be Rohit himself," the source, one of the top coaches and former India player, told when asked about Hardik's future.

Hardik Unlikely To Stay At Mumbai Indians

Though it has been reported that the MI management isn't 100 percent clear about their plans with Hardik, the source said that the 32-year-old will seek an exit from the franchise, hinting that he doesn't have a good relationship with the management,

"Hardik will seek a transfer. It is not just about captaincy but about personal realities as well. Can you work for a company when you don't have a good relation with the management?" he added.

When asked if Mumbai Indians should've poached Ashish Nehra, the Gujarat Titans coach, from the franchise when they got Hardik in a trade deal, the source said that getting players or coaches directly form another franchise isn't as easy as it looks.

"But this is the reality of IPL. No franchise can poach coach and captain from the other franchise. Why would Ashish Nehra come?" the source concluded.

A concrete update on Hardik Pandya's future at Mumbai Indians is expected to come in a couple of weeks.

The region is particularly famous for producing Dasheri mangoes, one of India's most loved varieties known for their sweetness, aroma, and smooth pulp.
